I have found that fix again, at Louis and Millie’s Chocolate’s in Downers Grove. Specialty candies and creative barks blend rich chocolate with fun snacks like pretzels and krispie treats. Soft creamy centers in more than two dozen flavors are drenched in handmade chocolate. (Try the cherry-vanilla you won’t be sorry!) They even have some nostalgic candies, like Necco Wafers, Zotts and twirl pops.

WHICH WINE? with BRIAN WHITKANACK

Wine is one of those things that can make or break a great meal. But a lot of pairing isn’t just the meat or fish, but rather how that meat or fish is prepared. What is the marinade? What, if any, sauce is it served with? Is it grilled? Sautéed?

These are all things that go into pairing wine and food.

POULTRY

BEEF

There is a saying “White with white,” which I would agree with if you’re having a lighter fish like sole or flounder. Try a nice pinot gris or a lighter oaky chardonnay. If you’re having swordfish or BBQ salmon, try a good Pinot Noir, and thank me later.

Depending on the marinade and the cut, I definitely go with a bolder red. Cabernet Sauvignon is the most common, but will do just as well with a peppery Carménère or a bold Malbec.

PORK

Pork can be done in many different ways, from smoking to grilling. The bolder the marinade and sauce (such as BBQ), the bolder wine you will need. If you’re brining the pork then broiling it, a good Pinot Noir will work great. If you’re having smoke brisket, step up to a Malbec.

You do not want to overpower the dish. Chicken can be served light enough for a nice buttery Chardonnay or Viognier-based white blend.

However, don’t be afraid to try a velvety Pinot Noir with poultry that have some good spice to it.

2 oz. Effen Cucumber Vodka 1.5 oz. Homericon Liquor Splash of fresh lemon juice English cucumber (for muddling and garnish) Place vodka, Homericon liquor, lemon juice and two English cucumber slices into a martini shaker.

Muddle the cucumber, add ice and shake vigorously.

Strain into chilled martini glass.

Garnish with another slice of cucumber and serve immediately.

The Fusion Bar at Café Amano in Elmhurst offers unique cocktails, but the most popular martini is The Mastic Tree, says executive chef and proprietor Marco Conte.

“Homericon liquor is made from the sap of the Mastic tree in Greece,” Conte says. “Its unique, almost tree-like flavor creates a slightly sweet and citrusy martini that has a very clean and fresh finish.”

English cucumbers are best for muddling – or pressing to extract the flavor – because of their thin skins, Conte says.

1.5 oz. Rumchata 4.5 oz. Tequila Cream 2 oz. fresh pineapple juice 1.25 oz. homemade sour mix Cherry as garnish

1.25 oz. Larceny Bourbon 1 oz. Bacon-Infused St. Germain liqueur 1 oz. fresh lemon juice .25 oz. diluted maple syrup (1 part maple syrup / 1 part water) .25 oz. egg white 1 dash bitters

It all started with some Rumchata and Tequila Cream. CiNe bar manager and mixologist Luis Mendoza saw the extra bottles lying around and he thought, “I’ve got to create something new here.”

So he played around with Rumchata, which is a blend of Horchata (or rice water) and rum. Enter the Cream of Tequila.

“When you combine the flavor of creamy tequila and rice and add pineapple, it’s like drinking a colada,” Mendoza says.

The Mexican Pina Colada takes its place among margaritas, mescal cocktails and seasonal fresh drinks alongside contemporary Mexican dishes.

“What inspired me was creating new flavors,” Mendoza says.

The mixologist advises people to never be afraid to try something new. “If you have the proper things to create a cocktail, don’t be afraid,” he says. “Use fresh ingredients from scratch, like fresh lime juice.”

Add egg white, lemon juice and maple syrup in a shaker and shake hard for 10 to 15 seconds.

Add the rest of the ingredients, fill shaker with ice and shake again for 10 to 15 seconds.

Serve in a martini glass and garnish with a piece of crispy bacon.

Self-described “bourbon guy” Demetri Kopley, owner and beverage program manager oft Wild Monk in La Grange, was doing research on cocktails when he created a drink mixing the two trendiest menu items: bourbon and bacon. It would become the Bourbon Bacon Sour.

“The egg white makes it frothy and the St. Germain is an elderflower liquor with bacon, kind of sweetish and smoky,” Kopley says. “You can marinate the bacon in St. Germain for 24 to 48 hours for a smoky taste. You serve it in a cocktail or martini glass with a piece of bacon, like a play on a whiskey sour.”

WORKS OF ART, MUSIC AND FOOD command the stage in La Grange

La Grange celebrates a weekend for Art Lovers September 19-20 when the West End Art Festival comes to town. Some 65 renowned artists from throughout the Midwest participate in this juried art show.

Enjoy live performance art, culinary demonstrations from noted local chefs, interactive art activities - plus a live auction of a public sidewalk art exhibit designed by local artists and sponsored by local businesses.

Performance art will showcase the talents of a variety of local musicians, dance troupes, singers and bands throughout the weekend under the main tent. Local experts from Mattone, Kama Indian Bistro, Prasino, La Buona Vita and more others will conduct live cooking demonstrations and workshops from the Baird & Warner Art of Food tent. There will be a variety of interactive art activities for children and families as well.

Friday evening is billed as “A Night of Art & Jazz,” and features a preview of selected artists and live entertainment by the renowned Reunion Jazz Orchestra at 6:30 p.m.

On Saturday, all artists will exhibit from 10 a.m. – 5 p.m., and on Sunday, the festival hours are 10 a.m. – 4 p.m. Wine, beer and food will be available for purchase throughout the weekend.

The auction of the La Grange summer art project (30 Little Free Libraries) takes place on Saturday at 6 p.m. Patrons are invited to enjoy live music and browsing of the items prior to the live auction from 5 – 6 p.m.

The project, “Adventures in La Grange” took readers across out town over the summer to enjoy the surprises found at each of 40 clever “Little Free Library” boxes & delightful headhole photo boards designed to look like Giant Book Covers. Each piece of art is sponsored by a local business and designed by a local artist, and will be auctioned for local charities at 6:30 p.m.

Andrea knew she was destined for a career in art when she received her first box of crayons. Prior to opening Red Street Studio in 1993, Andrea has held positions at Chicago agencies where she specialized in print and logo design and integrated marketing campaigns. She has a passion for helping businesses and non-profits grow through creative branding and good design.

Andrea is the founder of the West End Art Festival, now celebrating its 20th anniversary.

Seth’s jewelry career began in his father’s stained glass studio where he fashioned jewelry from scraps of discarded glass, wrapping them in wire. He attended the Savannah College of Art and Design, where he acquired a love of forming and silversmithing. He was an artist in residence at the Rochester Institute of Technology, and while a graduate student at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago, he started a metalsmithing group on Chicago’s south side for teenagers.

Retired from many years of teaching ceramics and jewelry, Nancy now works on her pottery full time at ClaySpace in Lisle. Drawn to ceramics by the feel of the clay, Nancy says her use of plant motifs as surface treatments comes from an interest in botanical art , which she studied at the Morton Arboretum. She earned a degree in Art Education at Bowling Green State University and a master’s degree from the University of Illinois at Chicago.

Woodworking is not a recent discovery for Richard Dlugo, but rather something he has enjoyed since childhood. After a life and career in both music education and subsequently computers, his retirement has provided time to focus his energies on the art of woodturning. works are diverse in style, recent works featuring detailed woodburning of floral and butterfly themes, embellished with colored pencils and blending/shading techniques to achieve a spectacular final presentation.

While Susan List studied art at Illinois State University in the 1970s, her love of creating art was really sparked in the early 1990s when she discovered watercolor.

Inspired by renowned artists Zoltan Szabo, Tony Van Hasselt and Richard Stephens, her favorite subjects range from tranquil water scenes and landscapes to figures and florals with birds. Recently she has begun using a new type of surface called yupo, which has allowed for greater freedom and expressiveness with vibrant colors.

Several years ago, Donna Sauers was given a weekend glassblowing workshop as a gift. It was her first introduction to working with hot glass and would eventually lead her to a career change. Introduced to an artist who taught lampworking, Sauers found it was a way to create tiny glass “gems” out of her home studio, and that lead to designing jewelry. Her inspiration comes from walks on the beach, fabric swatches, strolls through a resale shop, and even food.

Timothy Johnson has been a professional photographer for most of his career, having owned his own commercial studio for 25 years. Ten years ago he pursued his dream of landscape and nature photography, wining many awards in that field. A member of the La Grange Art League, he continues his passion for nature, landscape, and travel photography, with recent trips to the coast of Washington State, Europe, and the east coast.

Sous Vide Cooking Sous vide cooking is a method we recently have started. Compared to the rest of the French cooking methods, it is the newest. The word sous vide simply translates to “under vacuum”, which means in order to sous vide you must vacuum seal the food.

You can sous vide pretty much anything other than green vegetables. So it makes the cooking method very versatile.

At Ivy, we have used the sous vide method with filets, ribeyes, hanger steaks, eggs, carrots, corn and salmon – all with amazing results. Eggs come out creamy and perfectly over easy. Steaks are fork tender and always medium rare, top to bottom. The nice thing about the sous vide process is that you can infuse other flavors with the food. Carrots are a perfect example they are vacuumed-sealed with root beer and butter, which creates a glaze and the root beer taste is infused throughout the carrot.

We will continue to explore the endless possibilities of our sous vide process and bring you some mouth-watering creations from the team at Ivy.

Lynfred Winery, 15 S. Roselle Road, Roselle, will host Oktoberfest from 3 - 9 p.m. Oct. 3 and noon until 7 p.m. Oct. 4 at the winery.

The event has been held for about 30 years and was started by Fred and Lynn Koehler. Fred Koehler is from Germany and wanted to bring some German tradition and decided to host a grape stomping.

Within a few years, the event morphed into Oktoberfest.

The festival has changed a bit over the years, with some events no longer held.

For example, in the 1980s, the festival used to feature bed races, where guests would race hospital beds, as well as barrel races.

However, as the festival grew larger, event organizers realized these races were better for smaller crowds.

Admission to the family-friendly event is $3 per night, with Sunday heavily focused on family activities. Kids 13 and under are free.

Admission fees are donated to charity.

Kids can participate in a grape stomp competition, grape spitting competition and cork toss. All kids are given a ribbon for participating, plus are eligible for prizes, like extra dessert tickets.

Lynfred Winery always releases its Oktoberfest Wine at the festival and will have its tasting room open. Although tastings will not be offered during the event, buyers can choose from more than 80 wines to take home. Outside at the event, Lynfred Winery will feature special discounted wines.

In addition to roasted pork sandwiches and pulled pork dinners, the event will also feature pretzels, brat burgers, sweet corn, roasted nuts, hot dogs, German chocolate cake, streusel and caramel apples for purchase.

Oktoberfest is held rain or shine, and while there is seating under the tent, guests are welcome to bring their own chairs. More than 30,000 people are expected over the course of the event.

f you were a fan of the recently ended series “Mad Men”, you know that alcohol was an ever-present part of the landscape – in the home, at parties, and in the workplace. And surely you recall some of the iconic scenes of characters behaving badly while under the influence – the secretary taking the new riding lawnmower for a spin after a few drinks; Roger Sterling lobbing a couple of evocative comments towards a client’s wife. Alcohol and business often don’t mix well, which is why it can be tricky when planning an event for business or charity.

This is probably the most common question we are asked at Flight 112 Wine & Whiskey – how much and what types of alcohol should be served at a business function? If you are hosting a company holiday party or a nonprofit fundraiser, for example, you certainly want your guests to have a good time . . . but not too good of a time!

Fortunately, we do have several planning tips which can help you walk that fine line and host a successful and fun event. And, these are also great tips for your own holiday parties.

SERVE LOW ALCOHOL COCKTAILS AND DRINKS Flight 112 has created a custom menu just for these type of events: business meetings, holiday and summer office bashes, client dinners, and more. For example, the average ABV (alcohol by volume) of wine can range from 12 to 16 percent. The popularity of craft beers has introduced brews with ABVs upward of 18 to 20 percent. During an event with a duration of several hours or more, the effects can quickly add up. Here’s a selection of beverages with a lower alcohol count, perfect for your event: ¢ Session beers, which have recently gained in popularity, contain an ABV of five percent or less. ¢ White wines generally have a lower alcoholic content, and the sweeter the wine, the less the alcohol content it will have. A Riesling, for example, will have a lower ABV than a full bodied Chardonnay. ¢ For red wine lovers, choose a lighterbodied wine, such as a Pinot Noir, over red wines with heavy tannins, such as a Cabernet Sauvignon. ¢ Sparkling wines and champagnes are light and festive, and can be used in cocktails. ¢ Certain liqueurs, such as aperol, contain a lower alcohol content. Mix it with prosecco for a delicious bubbly cocktail.

he start of a school year brings mixed emotions for parents and children alike.

While more and more creative lunch items pop in the newsfeed on Facebook or Pinterest, Evans says it doesn’t need to be that complicated.

Parents often have strong feelings about school lunches as well, and making healthy mid-day meals that a child will eat is no small feat.

“It’s really not realistic for today’s working parents.

We just don’t have time to make kids lunches in the shape of a teddy bear or happy face - it’s crazy!

Molly Evans has plenty of experience preparing lunches, with a daughter in seventh grade and twin boys in fifth grade. And as the chef/owner of Savory & Sweet Specialties, Evans provides personal chef services, in-home private parties and cooking lessons throughout the suburbs of Kane County and the surrounding area.

“While not always healthy, almost all kids will look forward to their lunch more if there is some type of treat or salty snack,” she adds. Some easy options for this that are not too bad for them are popcorn, chocolate covered nuts or raisins, or a banana bread (my kids especially like it with chocolate chips) and whole grain crackers with cheese,” she says.

So how do you find the recipe for that healthy lunch your children will eat?

Another idea Evans employs may take some of the lunch packing pressure off parents.

A nice variety of produce, protein, hydration and complex carbohydrates should be the goal, Evans says.

“I really think once kids hit about second grade they should be responsible for making their own lunch. It is automatically less time consuming for parents and the kids will almost be guaranteed to eat what they pack.”

Evans suggests a list on the refrigerator of what the lunch should include – main dish, fruit or vegetable, drink and a small treat item.

“I think the bigger issue is making sure they don’t have the foods that cause them to crash or lose focus later such as soft drinks or foods that have artificial colors that some studies have linked to headaches and attention issues,” Evans says.

She suggests starting with the easy and obvious in the healthy foods category.

“You can never go wrong with fruit and vegetables.

We all need more of those,” she says.

To make it easier for everyone, Evans suggests having fresh cut fruits and vegetables in the refrigerator.

It also is important to include a lunch component that will fill them up, such as complex carbohydrates, Evans says. These include whole wheat bread, whole wheat pasta, whole wheat wraps and proteins such as nut butters, Greek yogurt or hard boiled eggs.

“From there they could decide on their own what/ how much they want. Just like adults, some days kids are in the mood for certain foods and not others,” she says.

The American Heart Association suggests another easy way to pack a healthy lunch is to include leftovers of a favorite dinner in a thermos.

Also a certified safe food handler, Evans says a hot/ cold thermos is a great lunch tool.

HELPING SKIN FROM THE INSIDE, OUT

It’s your skin. It’s the largest organ of the body. But it’s also your shell, your outer beauty and a piece of your identity.

Like any other body part or organ, skin needs to be protected, cared for and nourished. And there are many different foods that can be used as preventative and recuperative care.

FOODS TO INGEST

From berries to green tea, there are plenty of foods that can help keep skin looking nourished and healthy.

“One of the things I always say is just have a well-rounded, well-balanced diet that’s low on fat and high glycemic foods like sugars and high starches,” Dr. Alix J. Charles of the Belleza Skin Care Institute says. “If you take care of your body overall, your skin will be healthier.”

While there are many different foods that reflect positively through the skin, fruits that have antioxidants are key to healthy skin.

“Berries are full of antioxidants which protect your cells and fight against the signs of aging,” Bethany Kirk, owner and licensed esthetician at Buena Vida Skincare says.

Not only can berries fight aging, but they can be used as a repairing mechanism.

Dr. Charles explains that when skin is exposed to ultraviolet light and pollution, it creates a reaction called free radicals. Essentially, antioxidants like blueberries are “like sponges” for free radicals, soaking up all of the bad toxins.

Other fruits that have plenty of antioxidants are strawberries, blackberries and plums.

Kirk says a daily smoothie is an easy way to ingest antioxidants regularly. Her favorite recipe combines 12 carrots, a handful of kale leaves, two cups of cranberry juice and two apples. mysuburbanlife.com/magazine

Besides antioxidants, Dr. Charles says ingesting foods with high amounts of Vitamin A tend to help maintain regular skin health.

“Leafy vegetables like kale, spinach and things like that tend to be high in vitamin A,” Dr. Charles says.

Kirk offers a signature facelift at Buena Vida, that features fruit-based enzymes that exfoliate the skin to help lighten, tighten and brighten the skin’s appearance.

An antioxidant alternative to fruit that also has similar benefits is green tea.

“I am a huge advocate of green tea,” Kirk says.

“It is full of antioxidants and cancer-fighting ingredients and is great for acne prone skin to help reduce breakouts.”

While it may seem basic, one of the things most commonly overlooked is water. Dr. Charles notes that every individual should ingest a half a gallon of water per day for regular skin care.

FOODS TO APPLY

Although many foods are great in scrubs, Dr. Charles also suggests people be cautious about what they are putting on their skin.

“In general, scrubs can be good in the right hands, if they’re properly formulated,” he says. “but someone can make a peel, drop in a pumpkin seed and call it a pumpkin peel.”

Dr. Charles notes that Vitamin A in topical form and in various peels is a great way to jumpstart skin health.

Not only does eating the right food help skin glow, but also, applying certain foods topically on skin can have its benefits.

Whether it involves eating fruits and vegetables or applying them topically, skin is an organ and needs to be taken care of just like any other.

Although Kirk doesn’t recommend applying anything directly on the skin, she does recommend using various foods to make body scrubs. Combining one cup of Epsom salt, ½ cup of olive oil, one teaspoon lemon juice and one teaspoon of vanilla extract makes a great body scrub.

“Vitamin A and antioxidants are the two biggies when you’re talking about food and skin health,” Dr. Charles says. “Vitamin A directly contributes to skin health, while antioxidants sop up all of the bad things that happen with everyday activity.”

“I’m not crazy about applying different foods to the face because of the risk of clogging pores, reactions, etc.,” she says. “However, I FASHION & BEAUTY

IMPASSIONED ENVIRONMENTALIST Kay McKeen puts the green back in our communitites

G

rowing up in Wheaton in the 1960s, reducing waste, recycling and caring for the environment were a natural part of life for Kay McKeen. Her grandmothers taught her not to waste. Her father loved to plant trees.

She remembers camping as a child, and how her family would leave their campsite even cleaner than when they arrived. Caring for the environment was just a way of life for McKeen.

“People really do care about doing what’s right.

That’s been the most wonderful part,” Describing McKeen as a person moving in multiple directions might be an understatement.

“Nothing stops her,” says McKeen’s daughter, Bev Jaszczurowski of Bartlett. She and her brother, Greg, and their father have been McKeen’s longest volunteers…carrying supplies, helping with projects and lending their constant support.

“Twenty-five years and I’m still talking trash.”

As part of the Wheaton Environmental Improvement Commission, McKeen helped build the Wheaton Recycling Center. She’s happy to talk and teach about the benefits and eases of composting and has been an active working on legislation for the food scrap composting bill.

She also is the founder and executive director of SCARCE, School & Community Assistance for Recycling and Composting Education. Started in 1990, it was initially a way for McKeen to work with educators, sharing the benefits of compositing and recycling and it has evolved into a clearing house for recycling, finding ways to reuse and ultimately reduce waste in landfills.

“Twenty-five years and I’m still talking trash,” McKeen says.

While working through SCARCE, McKeen realized as schools purchased new textbooks the old materials sat unused in storage, or were tossed aside. She saw an opportunity to help others and one of SCARCE’s largest projects is the Book Rescue, taking in old books, text books and books for children and juveniles, and offering them to educators, visitors.

“These books can help kids read, do math, they are still valuable,” McKeen says.

Jaszczurowski works in the SCARCE office as an administrative assistant and when school’s out it’s likely that at least one or more of McKeen’s five grandchildren will be around to help sort items, lend a hand.

“She sees a need, an issue, a problem and she’s not a complainer, she’s a doer,” Jaszczurowski says.

Time and again Jaszczurowski saw her mother tackle problems, take up issues and make a difference. She helped establish the WheatonWarrenville Preschool PTA in the early 1980s, and her contributions to the community include lobbying and crafting legislation to protect children.

“Most people see a problem and get overwhelmed with just the problem,” Jaszczurowski says. “She never gets overwhelmed by the problem because she’s an optimist. She thinks there needs to be a solution, so she doesn’t get bogged down by the problem. She can see there has got to be a fix.”

McKeen shows no sign of slowing down. She’s continues to provide programs for teachers, speak on compositing and will coordinate the annual Healthy Children Workshop, hosted by SCARCE, Sept. 30. The program invites medical and community experts to share with parents and educators ways to protect and keep children safe

from harmful products and environmental threats.

“Once you start learning…The good news is the more we learn, the more we can protect our families. That is the driving force. We want to protect our families,” McKeen says. “We want to prevent pollution in the first place. It’s always harder to clean up after.”

The annual SCARCE Green Tie Gala in October is an opportunity for McKeen, her staff and volunteers to thank supporters and raise funds to allow her to press on with programs.

“Now I find myself thinking, whoa, that water is not clean. The air is not clean enough. There’s a ticking clock to getting things done,” McKeen says. “You can’t sit down; you’ve got to take action.”

She has been doing trunk shows globally for the last 10 years, recently finishing her trip through Australia and is now in the US. She visits a lot of quilt shops and groups, doing trunk shows (display of all her designs and projects), and a motivational talk with tips and tricks because so many sewers do combine machine embroidery with their quilting.

She has attended and taught at the American Embroidery Conference (AEC) since 2003, as well as at the American Sewing Expo and many more global events.

In May of this year, she has again taught at the AEC.
