Marilynn Zieman doesn’t duck out of photos anymore. Once upon a time, the office administrator at Webster Dental, 1121 Warren Ave., Suite 130, Downers Grove, had crooked front teeth and spaces on either side of her front teeth. “I was not happy about that look and I always wished it was different,” she said. So in 2000-2001, Zieman had veneers put on her top eight front teeth. “They just came out beautiful,” Zieman said. Veneers are thin, porcelain shells that are attached to your existing teeth. They can be matched to the natural or desired color of a person’s tooth for a uniform, authentic appearance. Porcelain veneers are also highly stain-resistant and may actually strengthen a person’s natural teeth. “It’s nice,” Zieman said. “It’s very nice. I smile more.” For those unhappy with their smile, Barbara R. Webster, DDS, of Webster Dental offers a myriad of options ranging from whitening to dental implants.
“You get instant results (with whitening),” Webster said. “It makes a big impact quickly.”
“Oftentimes, it’s an accident or trauma patient that will get this,” Webster said.
When it comes to whitening, Webster said the difference between an at-home whitening kit you can purchase over-the-counter and a whitening treatment from your dentist is the concentration you are getting. She said dentists offer a higher concentration of whitening solution and are also able to better manage sensitivity. Webster offers a 1.5 hour in-office treatment and added overthe-counter whitening generally takes longer and it might take more than one kit. She said it can be more economical to get an in-office treatment with the dentist.
For patients unhappy because they have a crooked smile or tooth, Webster also offers minor teeth straightening through the use of aligner trays. Through this procedure, Webster is able to move teeth half of a millimeter to one- or one-and-a-half millimeters total. Generally, teeth will move 0.15 mm every three weeks and new alignment trays are used every three weeks.
“You get good results with that one visit,” Webster said. Veneers are another option for someone unhappy with their smile. The procedure allows a dentist to shape the alignment and color of teeth. The procedure ranges from little to no prep to having to take off part of the tooth. “Veneers are an excellent option for someone that may have discolored teeth or misaligned teeth,” Webster said.
“I think the first thing people look at when they meet you is your eyes and then your smile,” Webster said.
Crowns also can also be used if there is more damage to a tooth and also allow for the change of shape, contours and shade of a tooth. Cosmetic bonding is another option, which, basically, is a tooth-colored filling to build up, contour and reshape a tooth – all done chair side.
Webster said some of the most entry-level cosmetic dentistry is the use of tooth-colored fillings and whitening. The dentist said she hasn’t placed a silver filling in about 15 years and that she is able to match the tooth-colored filling to people’s teeth.
Dental implants are another option for those with some of the most severe problems. It is typically used when someone is missing a tooth. The dentist is able to replace a single tooth or everything in the mouth, but it really depends on the expectations and budget of the patient.

“(This is) perfect for people who already had braces, but had a relapse,” Webster said. Webster said improving her patients’ smiles is one of the most rewarding things she gets to do. “This could be life-changing for people,” Webster said. “I’ve had patients that never smiled and people that, if they laughed, would cover their mouths to hide their smile.” The dentist said improving a smile is a big confidence booster for many of her patients and makes a big impact on their ability to interact with people. She has even seen tears in the eyes of patients when she is done. Zieman said for someone considering veneers or any other cosmetic procedure, it is important to find a dentist the patient trusts. And she would recommend Dr. Webster to anyone. Zieman has been in the dental field since 1963 and said she knows good, bad and mediocre and Dr. Webster is the best. “She enjoys what she does and if you enjoy what you do, it’s going to make a difference,” Zieman said.

Women have more information about their breast cancer risk than past generations ever had. If they're identified as high risk, they have more options for prevention. Some women at the highest level of risk, such as those with a dangerous BRCA1 or BRCA2 gene mutation, may feel their choice of options is relatively clear-cut. This type of mutation and a strong family history of cancer led actress Angelina Jolie to famously opt for a double mastectomy and removal of her ovaries and fallopian tubes. For some women at moderate risk levels, however, the decision between preventative surgery and increased surveillance can be emotionally overwhelming. But you don’t have to face it alone. Assessments with medical experts – oncologists and genetic counselors – are available to help women determine and understand their risk, and, if necessary, decide what course of prevention and/or surveillance to take. For example, at Edward Cancer Center, nurse navigator Jill Wozny, APN, guides each patient throughout the assessment and any followup, while genetic counselor Elyse Weber and I work closely together to explore in detail any possible risk factors, especially relevant family history. verybody can use a helping hand at some point, and that’s especially true as we age. Seniors often discover that maneuvering throughout the house and running errands become more challenging with each passing year. These and other activities of daily living, also known as ADLs, are the reason many seniors opt to reside in an assisted living environment. When the cold weather arrives, these activities can get all the more difficult. Snow, ice, even a blustery wind can mean problems with balance, and increase the chance of falling. For a senior, a fall can mean serious injury, which sometimes lasts for the rest of the individual’s life. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, falling can cause head injury and hip fractures that prevent normal mobility, and can even lead to early death. In 2013, 734,000 seniors were hospitalized due to falls, which are the leading cause of fatal and nonfatal injuries among the elderly.

But in an assisted living facility, seniors enjoy the freedom to navigate their home and community areas unfettered, and maintain a sense of independence by keeping their own living arrangement in a residential setting. Every senior is different, which means no two levels of care are alike. Assisted living provides an ideal opportunity to deliver customized care for seniors. One of the most crucial actions a person ever will take concerns the decision to leave one’s home. An empty tabletop to a host is much like a blank canvas to an artist. It provides the perfect opportunity for the hostess to reflect personality, while setting the tone and character for a dinner party through the tablescape that is created. Sally Conness is one of four owners of Downers Grove-based Avec Panache. “We call ourselves a special occasions store,” she says. “We try to have the things that people are looking for, for occasions that are special in peoples’ lives, such as weddings, showers and home entertaining.

Conness says there are components of the basic table setting etiquette from generations past that remain constant today. For instance, plates, glassware and flatware take up the same positions as they always have. Forks are to the left of the plate which is in the center. Knives and spoons are on the right. Silverware is in the order of its use, from the outside in.
“Most people don’t have enough dishes from one service for large numbers,” she explains. “It’s maybe even more interesting to do a little bit of mixing and matching of china patterns.”

Glassware, Conness says, often is more casual today than in past generations, as is flatware. “Women are busy so they don’t have time to polish silver,” she says. “They’re looking for flatware that is easier to maintain.” Conness says hostesses can get very creative when it comes to table linens. Items such as tablecloths, runners, place mats and napkins come in a myriad of different shapes, textures and colors. Linens can be layered and placed symmetrically or asymmetrically. Many hostesses will substitute non-traditional items for table covers including quilts, pieces of fabric and more.

ometimes owning and running a wine shop has it perks. It’s a lot of work and a lot of stress and heartache, but also very rewarding in so many ways.
Every two years or so we (Cabernet & Company staff) organize a Wine Tour to some part of the wine world where we think our customers might like to visit, but also where we’d like to visit. The part of Piedmont we’ll be visiting is nestled between the cities of Milan and Turin. It’s made up of small towns and vineyards.

Pumpkin Spice Crème Brulee
It’s that time of year for pumpkin and spices...what better way to bring in the fall season than with a creamy pumpkin Crème Brulee. It’s very easy to prepare this creamy dessert filled with autumn flavors ... serve it with fresh berries or even toasted pecans or walnuts.
INGREDIENTS (serves six) 2 cups heavy cream 2 teaspoons rum or vanilla 8 egg yolks 1/3 cup granulated white sugar 1 cup pureed pumpkin
1/4 teaspoon cinnamon 1/8 teaspoon ground nutmeg 1/4 teaspoon ground ginger 1/4 cup granulated white sugar for caramelized tops
TO MAKE Preheat oven to 300 °F. In a large bowl, whisk together the cream, rum or vanilla, yolks, sugar, pumpkin, cinnamon, nutmeg, and ginger, Blend well. Strain into a large bowl, skimming off any foam or bubbles. Divide mixture among six ramekins or custard cups. Place in a water bath and bake until set around the edges; but still loose in the center-about 30 to 40 minutes. Remove from oven and leave in the water bath until cooled. Remove cups from water bath and chill for at least two hours. TO SERVER When ready to serve, sprinkle about two teaspoons of sugar over each custard. Caramelize the tops of the custards using a hand-held torch - holding it four to five inches away from the sugar maintaining a slow and even motion. hile the range of choice from craft beer can be a little overwhelming to some who gravitate toward an old favorite brew, there’s no doubt that tastes are trending toward small batch, often local, creatively flavored options. “I think consumers are realizing there are a lot of great choices out there,” says Jason Ebel, cofounder (and one of the brothers) of Two Brothers Brewery in Warrenville and Aurora. “I subscribe to the ‘rising tide raises all ships’ philosophy, and I believe that has happened with craft beer over the years. There are so many breweries out there making a lot of great and innovative beers. People are discovering those beers and wanting more.” Ed Malnar, cofounder and owner of Pollyanna Brewing Company in Lemont, says it is a delicate balance between creativity and quality that keeps micro-breweries popular.

Autumn is one of the most creative seasons for brewers, incorporating traditional flavors of the harvest and the fall holidays into the process. “Some brewers produce pumpkin beers and spice them accordingly,” Malnar explains. “As we move closer winter you will see darker beers with higher alcohol emerge. GIVING 110 PERCENT Mabel Chirolla an advocate for families By MELISSA RUBALCABA RISKE
F
or Mabel Chirolla, her job is more than just work. It is a dedication to each and every person who walks through the office doors.
Dr. Tim Wall invited her 16 years ago to join Pediatric Health Associates as the manager for the West Chicago location. It didn’t take long for the health care office to become a community resource as the staff began to provide more than physicals and care for the sick.
Chirolla says one of the biggest differences she has found in the United States is a desire – and ability – to help others, something she thinks is lacking in her home country.
“We know their names, we know their families, and we know the moms."
Gieseman says Chirolla led the charge to help the community, bringing attention to patients’ needs and searching for the resources to help, whether that was providing volunteers to help transport patients to their appointments or creating a network of volunteer interpreters to accompany patients visiting a specialist and provide face-to-face translations from the doctors. “I’m so proud of our office, how we treat our patients. They are not a number or just another patient,” Chirolla says. “We know their names, we know their families, and we know the moms. This is the way we make them feel comfortable and show that we can help them.”
Chirolla helped create PANNA, a Spanishspeaking support group for families affect by autism, in 2010. Chirolla says the group, which started with just four families has grown to more than 20 families and now includes support from Western DuPage Special Recreation Association. The desire to help is just a part of Chirolla’s vibrant personality. Born in Bogota, Colombia,
“I think the U.S. has the most opportunity for people and everybody is willing to help,” she says. She is a founding member of Carelink, a foundation developed to help close the gap in health care for the homeless and low income minority populations where English is not the primary
language. “I see a lot of underserved families who need somebody to guide them to the right resources, to help them find the help they need,” Chirolla says. She makes regular visit to the county health department to speak with prenatal patients about services and resources available. For several years she was the director of program providing up-to-date car seats to low-income families. “They would come in with these car seats that were so old, that they had bought at a garage sale,” she says. “We provided the car seats and if the families had older children, we made sure they had car seats too.”

As with many programs, Chirolla says education is a priority and at times, it can be a challenge helping families unfamiliar or unaware of health issues. “Sometimes it can be difficult to get people to believe in you, that you can get the resources for them,” Chirolla says. And yet she is overwhelmed when people take the time to say thank you, bringing in homemade food to the office or making a special stop to visit and share family updates.
Chirolla says she was disappointed when state funding put an end to the much needed program, “I need more hours in a day,” she jokes, “because 24 hours is not enough." but not one to slow down, she is always working on new programs and projects. She’d

Date night destinations I never truly grasped the significance of date nights until I became a mother. Not only did “me time” get placed on the backburner but soon, so did couple time. In an effort to recharge and reconnect, my husband, Chris, met me after work for three dates along the train line. FIRST STOP – Bottle and Bottega in La Grange (south of tracks, 1 W. Harris Ave., bottleandbottega.com). Unleashing your hidden artistic talents while sipping on wine certainly has become a growing trend for both date and girls’ nights. Bottle and Bottega has plenty of wine glasses and corkscrews to accommodate the bottle you bring from home. Donning our paint splattered smocks, we followed along as the teacher sketched the night’s painting: the Chicago Blackhawks logo. Soon Chris jumped in working ahead of the class while I, who recently went to a similar place with friends, treaded cautiously, with hopes my second painting would be better than the first! As the night went on and the wine kicked in, even I began experimenting with blending colors. Neither of our paintings looked precisely like the logo, but with a bit of practice I think we can get the hang of this. SECOND STOP – Tivoli Theatre in Downers Grove (north of tracks, 5021 Highland Ave., classiccinemas. com). It was déjà vu coming back to the Tivoli. For years I worked just steps from the theatre where Chris often met me after work to watch second-run movies. Before Chris started working from home
to care for our son, we would check the marquee every week from the train to see what was playing and plan an evening to stop in Downers Grove when we found a flick we liked. It’s not just the inexpensive date night that appeals to us, but the grandeur of stepping into the 86-year-old theater, which opened on Christmas Day in 1928. Although the theatre has undergone renovations through the years, its history lives on through the French Renaissance décor and Wurlitzer pipe organ. It’s even a nice venue to take the kids, and show them what movie theaters looked like before the days of multiplex cinemas. LAST STOP – Paramount Theatre in Aurora (southwest of tracks, 25 E. Galena Blvd., paramountaurora. com). Last summer we treated ourselves to a subscription to Paramount’s Broadway Series and enjoyed it so much we renewed our subscription this year. This season kicks off with “Oklahoma!,” which I never have seen (but know “The Surrey with the Fringe on Top” courtesy of Billy Crystal and Meg Ryan belting out the tune in the middle of a store in “When Harry Met Sally.”) Speaking of movies, the rest of season features stage productions of beloved movie classics: “A Christmas Story,” “Hairspray” and “West Side Story.” The quality of production at the Paramount rivals its downtown counterparts. Stop at one of the fine dining restaurants in downtown Aurora to cap off the date (our favorite is Two Brothers Roundhouse).

The Oxford Dictionary defines art as “The expression or application of human creative skill and imagination, typically in a visual form such as painting or sculpture, producing works to be appreciated primarily for their beauty or emotional power.” In today’s culture, this definition can be expanded to include performance art as in dance, acting and music along with culinary art, architecture, graphic arts, drawing and literature. To truly appreciate whatever form of art engages you, one must reflect not only on the final “masterpiece” but also on all that embodies the final production. Take, for example, a ballet. It is made up of the physical grace and prowess of each dancer, but also the choreography, the

costumes, the music lighting and staging. While a production may last from a few minutes to a couple of hours, it has been a work in progress for many years….years that include hours of lessons and rehearsals, heartaches and triumphs, along with all that goes in to its creation…fabrics and costumes, instruments and music, stage architecture and direction. To fully embrace and experience art, one must consider all that happens before the final masterpiece is unveiled. I love art for those very reasons! Whether it’s painting and design, dancing, cooking, listening to music, or reading a great book, art takes me to another dimension…one which helps me to create balance, allowing me to unplug, let my mind wander and my imagination bloom. Art is in the everyday. Be sure to take some time to create your own art or to enjoy the creation from another.

Halloween HAPPENINGS Across the suburbs By WENDY FOSTER

alloween has evolved into one of the more highly anticipated holidays in modern U.S. culture. No longer celebrated solely by young children in Disney costumes, people of all ages glorify the tradition of dressing up, seeking ghouls and ghosts, and begging for candy. Here are a few of the more notable Halloween celebrations that will be taking place in the DuPage county area. ¢ HAUNTED GROUNDS There is ample opportunity to get your adrenaline pumping by visiting haunted parks and forests in the west suburban area. Fright in the Forest Tram Tour and Night Hike at Morton Arboretum in Lisle, for ages 16 and over, will be held at half hour increments between 6:30-8:30 p.m. on October 9. The event includes a tram tour and guided hike followed by a themed dinner and live music. Admission is $30-$40. For additional information call 630-725-2066. Oak Brook Park District will hold its 13th annual Haunted Forest from 6:30-9:30 p.m. on Friday and Saturday, October 9 and 10. The event includes a 13,000 square foot haunted maze, and ‘haunted’ trails with music, light, fog, strobe lights and creepy characters. Parental discretion is advised for children under 10. The Haunted Forest event also includes a pumpkin patch, face painting, fireside story telling, a craft corner, and tractor pulled hayrides.
