Editor’s Note It’s no wonder why so much of our time and energy goes into making a house a home.

A home is a place of surrender. Its empty spaces are filled with memories and objects of affection. Its walls keep the tiny world we’ve created for ourselves intact. And it’s one of the few places where we allow ourselves to just be.

In this month’s homes edition, cover girl Marta Cullen – owner of Dream Interiors in Downers Grove – works her interior design magic by turning a client’s forever home into a westsuburban Shangri-La. In “The fairy godmother of interior design,” Cullen shares insight on creating a space that reflects your style.

As a woman of Irish descent, I consider March to be somewhat of a month-long celebration of all things Irish.

In honor of St. Patrick’s Day, we’ve compiled a list of places to partake in some seasonal shenanigans. Lisa Gerhold-Dirks serves as Elmhurst's environmental steward

hen it comes to making an impact on the community, Elmhurst resident Lisa Gerhold-Dirks believes that small acts can add up to create great change.

“She’s an advocate for all of Elmhurst,” says Elmhurst resident Barbara Lonergan. “She started as a school leader … and now [she is] with the city’s sustainability task force.”

As her work in the community began to take off, she was approached about helping out at her son’s school. A small group of parents and educators were interested in using a small plot of unused land at Hawthorne Elementary School to create an outdoor classroom in a garden.

“The hands-on learning experience really helps a lot of kids retain those lessons, and it relates to the curriculum,” Gerhold-Dirks says.

Gerhold-Dirks says that being eco-conscious came from her parents. Her mother and father, a biologist, taught her to reuse and recycle, and camping trips were used as an opportunity for her to learn about the land and to be good stewards.

Today, Gerhold-Dirks practices what she preaches by driving an electric car, recycling, composting in her backyard and growing a small garden of tomatoes and peppers.

During the walk, she noticed that school buses were idling in a parking lot for more than an hour while passengers were on a field trip. At the time, Gerhold-Dirks knew that Elmhurst had signed on to become a Cool City and was committed to reducing its carbon footprint.

hat better way to start a new season than with a home remodel. Styles and trends continuously evolve and are not limited to the clothes and accessories we wear. Injecting your style into your house is what gives you a home, so you want to make sure that your home reflects both your personal taste and comfort, while also incorporating current trends.

If you are in the market to redesign, you definitely have to check out what’s new for 2016. Use Google and Pinterest to aid in the search for up-to-date home design trends.

Here are some interior design trends for 2016, according to Houzz – an online platform that brings professionals and homeowners together for remodeling and design information.

• KITCHENS: Whether you are a master chef or prefer take out, the kitchen is generally an important feature of the home. Two-toned kitchen cabinets are gaining in popularity. For a more conservative look, keep the top cabinets looking clean by using a neutral color and create contrast by using a darker color for the bottom lower cabinets. For a bolder look, consider bright yellow or red top cabinets with chestnut brown bottom cabinets.

Add character to the kitchen with lighting features.

Chandeliers are a fun addition but, according to House Beautiful magazine, statement pendants are the way to go.

• DINING ROOMS: Formal dining rooms are a must if you like to entertain. Give special attention to design details in the dining room to make it feel rich and welcoming.

• SUNROOMS: Sunrooms are back! (I don’t think they ever went out of style.) Even if you do not have the budget to build a sunroom, try creating a sun-drenched room in the corner of your house.

• BATHROOMS: Have you considered a bidet? Why not?

According to Houzz data, 5 percent of renovated master bathrooms have a bidet/toilet combo. Another bathroom feature that can create additional comfort is the flooring.

Bathrooms are generally fit with tile, which can get cold during the winter months, but a solution to the problem is heated tile flooring.

When it comes to your personal style, keep in mind that your home is an extension of who you are. Fashion designer and TV personality Rachel Zoe had it right when she said, “Style is a way to say who you are without having to speak.”

heaton is a town built on the generosity of its founders. The town’s original settlers strategically donated parcels of their land to allow the railroad to lay down tracks; Then they gave away land that surrounded the new train station to those willing to build immediately. These actions laid the foundation for what would become the city of Wheaton.

As the area began to flourish, Wheaton was incorporated as a village with one of it's founders, Warren Wheaton, as its first president. He later donated a large parcel of land to the Illinois Institute, which was renamed Wheaton College in his honor. “[Wheaton] has a very rich history, and they’ve really been able to maintain the foundation of it,” says Kerry O’Brien, director of the Wheaton Chamber of Commerce.

The historic area is filled with quaint bistros, vintage and contemporary shops, art studios, a record store, full-service spas, a craft brewery and more. A weekly French Market offers locally grown produce, crafts and flowers each Saturday morning.

Wheaton College adds to the cultural landscape of the city. The on-campus Billy Graham Center Museum explores the life and faith of the minister and hosts up to 40,000 visitors a year. The college hosts a variety of events and shows that draw residents and tourists to the campus, including festivals, football games, and world-class musical performances.

There also are plenty of outdoor activities.

The beautiful grounds of Cantigny Park include 500-acres of fountains, ponds, rose gardens and centuries-old oak trees.

Visitors also can explore the 20th-century mansion, an American Military History museum and a 27-hole championship golf course. Blackwell Forest Preserve and Cosley Zoo both give visitors a close-up experience with local animals and wildlife.

Marta Cullen works magic on client’s dream home

By ELIZABETH HARMON Photos by ALDO D'LARA Interior designer Marta Cullen is passionate about helping clients express their own personal style – even when they can’t quite describe it.

“Often they know what they don’t like, so we start from there and narrow it down,” says Cullen, the principal designer and owner of Dream Interiors in Downers Grove. “Once I figure out what they don’t like, I can figure out what they do like. That’s the fun part, and I love it.”

A crucial part of discovering and understanding a client’s taste includes a trip to his or her home.

“This allows me to have a sense of what’s important to them,” Cullen says. “Is their home a showplace to entertain or an escape from the outside world that’s relaxed and comfortable?”

“I’m a visual person, so I’m always looking around.

Do they have a lot of personal pieces displayed, or do they seem to prefer clean countertops and surfaces? Is there a color, a rug or piece of art they want to build the design around, or are they looking for a whole fresh start?”

DESTINED FOR DESIGN

Cullen’s passion for fabrics and colors dates back to her childhood in Elmhurst. When she was 9 years old, her mother gave her a sewing machine, which sparked her interest in design.

“It all started because I loved clothes, and since my parents couldn’t purchase every single item I wanted, I learned to sew. First it was doll clothes, While some designers have a signature look, Cullen then I started to make clothes for myself, and then I taught my friends,” says Cullen. prefers a client-centered approach.

Her vision, passion and love of helping others have earned Cullen recognition from customers and her industry. This year, she was awarded Best of Houzz for 2016 by Houzz.com, an online community devoted to interior design, architecture and home improvement.

By her sophomore year at York High School, she’d taken every sewing and textile course the school offered, and ended up doing an independent study in sewing. After school, she worked at a fabric store and – by senior year – was an assistant manager. After high school, she enrolled at Iowa State University, known for its top-notch textiles program and, after graduation, went to work as a buyer for fashion retailer Madigan’s.

Cullen has been in business for 20 years and works with clients throughout the western suburbs, Chicago and has even taken on a few out-of-state projects. Most of her business comes through referrals from clients who recommend Dream Interiors to friends.

Clothing and fashion remained her focus until she became a stay-at-home mom, and launched a home-based window treatments business, Dream Windows. Over the next seven years, she built a steady client base and eventually opened a brickand-mortar location – Dream Interiors.

“My style is my clients’ style, and I love helping them discover what they want,” she says.

One of Cullen’s largest projects to date involved serving as a design consultant for a long-time client who built a brand new home in the western suburbs. Cullen not only provided design expertise for the home’s interior but also the exterior.

The design integrates many of the homeowner’s existing pieces, but new fabrics and accessories give it an updated look.

Cullen and her client worked side-by-side, meeting with vendors and the builder to create a cohesive vision that reflected the family’s style – right down to the details – such as the kitchen’s stone range hood, which is embellished with carvings.

Cullen visualized the entire project, which is a blend of traditional and contemporary style.

Preserving the past HOMES LISTED ON THE NATIONAL REGISTER OF HISTORIC PLACES TELL THE STORY OF A BYGONE ERA

T

wo area homes, one the distinctive residence of a prominent entrepreneur, the other a modest inn that played a part in the nation’s westward expansion, offer a look into DuPage County's history. The Orland P. Bassett House in Hinsdale and Stacy's Tavern in Glen Ellyn are listed on the National Register of Historic Places, which is administered by the National Park Service. The register is an official list of sites deemed worthy of preservation.

“It creates a link to the past, and it’s important for us to remember the past as we go into the future,” says Susan English, executive director of the Hinsdale Historical Society. ¢ THE ORLAND P. BASSETT HOUSE Orland P. Bassett, was already a prosperous printer when he and his family moved to Hinsdale in 1887, but his greatest success was still to come. Bassett cultivated roses as a hobby and, in 1888, the horticultural enthusiast created a hybrid rose – the American Beauty Rose – in his greenhouse.

Soon after, and with the help of his son-inlaw, Bassett launched a commercial florist to market the rose. The company, Bassett & Washburn, eventually became one of Hinsdale’s largest employers.

A decade later, Bassett purchased a corner of a lot on Sixth Street and broke ground on a home that would prove to be one of the community’s finest. The groundbreaking and construction were chronicled in the local newspaper, English says. In May, 1899, the reported cost of the home was $10,000, but it ended up being $17,000 by July, and a story published in late 1899 reported that the cost was about $25,000.

“It kept going up,” says English.

Built in the Colonial Revival style, the home also features decorative details of the Queen

Anne style, which was popular during the late Victorian era. The house offered modern luxuries, such as a second-floor bathroom, electric lighting, a basement billiard room and a third-floor ballroom. Known locally as The American Beauty House, the Bassett home was the setting for many fashionable gatherings at the turn of the century.

The home was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 2004. It continues to be a private residence and is not open to the public.

¢ STACY’S TAVERN In the 1830s, early DuPage County settlers Moses Stacy and his wife, Joanna, often welcomed travelers and boarders to their home. In 1846, the couple built a new home along busy Geneva Road and opened it as a stagecoach inn, known as Stacy’s Tavern.

The couple offered overnight lodging for 50 cents, which included two meals and hay for two horses. Laws limited the number of guests allowed to share a bed to five people.

Not only did the couple welcome travelers and farmers going from Chicago to Galena, but also settlers heading to the Western Frontier.

After the Stacys died, the house changed hands many times and was eventually divided into apartments. In the late 1960s, the village was approached by the building’s owner.

“She had an offer from an oil company that wanted to tear it down and build a gas station, but she felt it was important to save it, so she sold it to the village for less than she would have gotten for it,” says Suzanne Carty, president of the Glen Ellyn Historical Society Board of Directors.

Trends in spare-room transformations

f you can dream up a project for your home, there is someone out there who can make it happen.

Nowadays, homeowners are looking beyond simply turning a spare bedroom into a guest bedroom or using a finished basement as a second living room. Instead, they are getting a little more creative with the help of area contractors, remodeling experts, designers and decorators.

In business since 1993, Caprio Prisby Architectural Design, P.C., in Hinsdale, has had the opportunity to work on some unique projects. Co-owner and architect Jim Prisby says that his company has helped clients transform attics into art studios, hobby rooms and craft rooms, and has designed features like hidden bookcases.

“You try to keep those things a little more fun,” he says.

Caprio Prisby also has assisted clients with opening up the ceiling of a second-floor

bedroom in order to create a loft space that is accessible by ladder.

Arcade Machine Emulators are just a few of the things Caprio Prisby has put into basements.

Lately, Prisby says that some of the more fun projects that his company has done have taken place in the basement. In new builds, if a client can dream it, the company can find a way to build it, Prisby says.

“The sky is the limit,” he says. “We get some unusual requests … You see a lot of stuff. It seems like there’s something new every month.”

Adding golf simulators have become popular, he adds. In order to add a gold simulator, a basement needs to have a 10-foot ceiling to accommodate, what is essentially, a smart TV, but it also can be used for multiple forms of entertainment. Golf simulators, skeet ball and a car-racing simulator are just a few of the ways to use the technology.

“It becomes a little more inclusive than the private theater,” Prisby says.

Overall, people are looking for more flexible space. Regardless if a home is a new build or remodel, people still install bars, wine cellars and use the basement as a space to entertain.

“We want to make sure it’s energyefficient and a timeless design that has longevity,” Rubinstein says of Lifestyle Homes’ projects.

Regardless of what project a client wants completed in his or her home, cabinetry often is an essential component.

CITY’S DOWNTOWN IS BOOMING

Elmhurst's past and present have been shaped by the railroad.

In 1849, the city was just a small community called Cottage Hill when Galena and Chicago Union Railroad laid down tracks through the area. It completely transformed the young town, creating easy access to and from the city for farmers and their produce, as well as residents.

Today, the railroad has helped Elmhurst’s downtown area to thrive.

Thousands of commuters pass through the area thanks to the Metra train station, located in the heart of downtown. Residents and visitors also frequent the downtown area for shopping, dining, entertainment and events at local businesses.

These traditional downtown areas are becoming harder to find, as large shopping centers drive out small merchants. John Quigley, president and CEO of the Elmhurst Chamber of Commerce and Industry, says that Elmhurst’s thriving downtown helps create a strong sense of community.

“People really tend to be more connected with their town when there’s an identifiable downtown,” he says.

This includes the construction of apartment buildings, parking garages, retail shops, a fitness center and more. The goal is to foster population density while maintaining a unique, walkable downtown.

Elmhurst College is another vibrant addition to the local culture. Many of the college’s events are open to the public, such as theater performances, educational programming, sporting events and high-profile speakers.

The Elmhurst College Jazz Festival, which takes place in February, is one of the oldest festivals of its kind in the nation.

Other cultural offerings include four unique museums that showcase art, local and theater history and lapidary art. A local favorite is the York Theatre that offers first-run movies while maintaining some of the magic of an old-fashioned theater.

“You’re getting all those things that you might go to Chicago to get but you’re getting them in a small town atmosphere,” says Quigley.

Reduce your risk of stroke through prevention, awareness with DR. MARK FEHR, ELMHURST NEUROSCIENCES INSTITUTE

H

aving a stroke is scary.

What often begins with a droopy face, slurred speech, confusion or a loss of vision can alter your life. Luckily, 80 percent of strokes are preventable, according to the National Stroke Association. If recognized quickly enough, strokes also can be treated. The best treatment for a stroke, as with most health conditions, is prevention.

Your choices can positively or negatively affect stroke risk. Poor eating habits, a sedentary lifestyle, smoking and drinking all can increase your risk. To help lower risk, eat more plantbased foods, such as vegetables, whole grains, nuts and beans. Replace some red meat, poultry and eggs with seafood. Work with your doctor to determine a healthy weight for you and once you get there, try to maintain it.

A great way to help maintain a healthy weight, while also reducing your risk of stroke, is to increase physical activity. Strive for 75 minutes of vigorous exercise, like jogging or swimming, combined with two or more days of strength training each week. If vigorous cardio isn’t for you, 150 minutes of moderate-intensity exercise – such as biking or brisk walking – per week is just as beneficial. Start slow and increase exercise until you reach the recommended amount of both cardio and strength training.

Smoking doubles your risk of stroke by increasing plaque build-up, blood thickness

and the formation of clots. If you smoke, it’s time to quit. Talk to your doctor about smoking cessation aids and support. And don’t get discouraged; successful quitting often takes several tries.

While a daily alcoholic drink (or two, if you’re male) has been shown to have some health benefits, more than that can increase your risk of stroke. Enjoy an occasional drink, but be sure to do so in moderation.

Certain medical conditions, such as high blood pressure, high cholesterol, diabetes, an irregular heartbeat or a family history of stroke, can also increase your risk. Talk with your physician to determine if a quick, painless stroke screening may be right for you.

Regardless of risk, strokes can occur in anyone, even if you are young and healthy. Recognition of the symptoms of a stroke means that you can get to the hospital – and treatment – faster.

¢ REIKI

Japanese in origin, Reiki (Ray-kee) is a healing discipline that treats emotional and physical problems by restoring the balance of the lifeforce that exists within us all, explains Leigh Ann Mills, an Itasca-based Reiki master and teacher.

“I like to call it soul energy because it’s present in everyone,” says Mills, who emphasized that Reiki is not a religious practice, nor does it contradict other faiths. “That’s a very common question.”

Personal challenges led Stephanie Frantz to meditation 20 years ago, and the practice changed her life.

¢ KEY DIFFERENCE

While both treatments have the same goal of fat reduction, the fundamental difference

between CoolSculpting and liposuction lies in the treatment approach and the degree of invasiveness involved. CoolSculpting is a completely non-surgical, non-invasive procedure, which makes it more suited for patients who wish to avoid invasive cosmetic treatments but without having to compromise on the effectiveness of the procedure.

CoolSculpting makes use of a unique cooling process to freeze away unwanted fat cells in the body’s fat pockets. The fat cells gradually die and become eliminated from the body in a natural way. ¢ PARADES APLENTY Elmhurst will host a St. Patrick’s Day Parade at noon Saturday, March 5. The 20th annual event will begin at the intersection of Wilson Street and Spring Road, and continue north on Spring Road. More than 80 floats, including Irish Dancers, the Shannon Rovers and local sports team mascots, are scheduled to participate.

The Elmhurst Armpit Orchestra, featuring the world’s largest drum, and the York High School marching band also will perform.

Last year, Gov. Rauner was the parade grand marshal, and Elmhurst College will be this year’s grand marshal.

“Last year we had well over 20,000 people on the street,” says parade chairman Jim O’Connor. “It’s turned into a very big family event, featuring quite a bit of everything.”

Ballydoyle' Irish Pub, Downers Grove

Enjoying a bowl of Lucky Charms for breakfast, although delicious, doesn’t count as celebrating St. Patrick’s Day. It doesn’t matter if you’re Irish or not, people from all over the world enjoy Irish heritage and culture March 17 (and for most of March, seemingly).

While Chicago is known for its grand gesture of dying the Chicago River green in honor of St. Patrick’s Day, there are plenty of opportunities for food, drink and Irish-related revelry in DuPage County.

West Suburban Irish will host its annual St. Patrick’s Day Parade on Saturday, March 12, in Naperville. It will begin at Naperville North High School, 899 N. Mill St., and wind its way through the downtown area. Featuring many floats and marchers, the parade also is an opportunity to help the less fortunate. Attendees are encouraged to donate a non-perishable food item to benefit the Loaves and Fishes Community Food Pantry.

Quigley’s Irish Pub, 43 E. Jefferson Ave., Naperville will have live music beginning at noon Thursday, March 17, and plenty to eat and drink.

Shannon’s Irish Pub, 428 N. Main Street, Glen Ellyn, is going to reward its first 100 customers with free T-shirts on St. Patrick’s Day, beginning at 8 a.m.

Tommy Nevin’s Pub, 3032 English Rows Ave., Naperville, has a variety of entertainment scheduled for Saturday, March 12, and Thursday, March 17, including the Sullivan Irish Dancers, the Larkin & Moran Brothers and Coyote Riot, among others.

The Kerry Piper’s annual St. Patrick’s Day party is a weeklong celebration that takes place at the pub, 7900 Joliet Road, Willowbrook.

Featuring live music, Irish dancers, bagpipers, bands and both Irish cuisine and American fare, the event is certain to be a non-stop party. Gavin Coyle, St. James Gate, Maggie Speaks, the Larkin & Moran Brothers and the Ploughboys are just some of the many performers scheduled to hit the stage at the Kerry Piper. The St.

Thursday, March 17. Designed specifically for kids ages 3 to 5, the event will include stories, crafts and a special treat.

Homan uses a variety of songs, speeches and images to celebrate the Irish road to freedom. With a threepiece band of traditional Irish musicians, Homan will entertain, inform and celebrate the glory of Ireland.
