“No one is making the traditional furniture like they did in the past, so it’s much different now,” says Kim McQuiston, advertising director for Toms-Price Home Furnishings in Wheaton. “People are now after a different look. They like the very clean, more minimalistic style and we’re not ignoring them. We’re tailoring things to them.”

Kristin Petro, an interior designer from Elmhurst, says homeowners often are juggling so much in their busy lives, they want their home to be serene, and they are discovering that peace via reduction.

“I think we are seeing a movement to extreme minimalism,” she says. “More and more people want to see the clean lines. You are seeing it with the younger age group, but even with those who are older.” mysuburbanlife.com/magazine

“People are looking for more modern and clean,” Petro says. ‘This has happened gradually and you’ve got all ages, from the first-time owners to the others that are looking for change and just trying to clean things up and downsize some.”

“That group is pretty creative and wants to do what it wants, on its own,” Petro says. “They’ve evolved, and don’t want to go with what they saw growing up. They want their own look.”

The minimalist look even is being incorporated into the busiest and typically more chaotic rooms of the home, like the kitchen, and the office, she says.

“People just want their homes to be clean and not overdone. They’re keeping it simple and that seems to keep them happy.”

Forget building up; these days, it’s all about building out.

That’s not the case now.

“But now, things have completely turned and almost all of the homes we build are ranches,” Whelan says.

Amy Kite, CEO of the Kite Team (an offshoot of Keller Williams Realty Infinity), says a lot of the new ranch home construction has to do with the lack of builders focusing on them in the past.

“We’re seeing a trend where ranches are hard to find,” Kite says. “Mainly because builders didn’t build a lot of them.”

She says that due to the lack of ranch properties throughout the Chicago suburbs, single-story homes are generally selling at 50 percent more or higher per square foot than any two-story home.

“We are absolutely finding that empty nesters want to move into ranch homes,” Kite says.

“What we’re also finding is that people today are planning for the future and want to move

So we have some younger people buying ranch homes today.”

Not only are empty nesters looking to downsize, but one-story homes also prove to be helpful further down the line as families age.

“People who need new housing want to be able to age in place,” Whelan says. “Some of them may have already had hip replacements or knee surgery and they need the ease of one floor living.”

Some of the options that Airhart offers for new construction take the future into consideration, including hand-held showerheads, grab bars, wider doorways, wood flooring everywhere and taller toilets.

“Some of them have no health problems at all and are very active but they want a home they can stay in even if they may become frail or wheelchair-bound someday,” Whelan says.

Another perk to ranch homes is the square footage blueprint. Two-story homes generally have a smaller technical blueprint, while ranches provide a large floor plan, which homeowners can utilize by finishing the basement.

Ranches give you the ability to create more space within the home by using the basement.�

One of the latest building trends Whelan has seen with ranch homes is that many of them are being built with extra master bedrooms and guest suites.

Airhart offers that option in a home called The Harrison, which has a three bedroom or two master suite option (perfect for anyone who needs room for a parent) but also has an option to add a large loft and guest suite that can be used as an “apartment� for kids returning from college or hosting relatives overnight.

Kite also notes that one of the biggest pros of the ranch-style home is the ability to create a master “wing� on one side of the house, while the other bedrooms are located on the other side of the house.

Kite regularly is approached by builders to ask what she thinks she should build with their space, and every single time, she says “ranch� without hesitation.

Downsizing?

“It’s because of the aging baby boomers that it’s come to this,� Kite says. “The fact is there’s still a long line of the boomers to come who haven’t yet downsized.�

While Kite and her husband, Michael, the chief operating officer of the Kite Team, don’t currently live in a ranch, they certainly plan on it in the future. “I’m tired of the stairs and I’m under 50,�

Kite says. “I’ll get rid of them anytime. “My husband is a boomer, and we’ll continue to see that generation downsize, and then my generation will start to downsize. I think we’ll continue to see the need for ranches.�

on’t let the cold and windy weather keep you from your favorite summer pastime — golf. There are plenty of indoor golf facilities throughout northern Illinois to keep you and your swing in shape, and maybe even improve with the aid of a golf simulator. The state-ofthe-art technology in golf simulators can track a golfer’s swing and ball launch to simulate what the ball would have done had the hit been made in the real world instead of a virtual one.

Many of the golf facilities have outdoor ranges that will stay open into the early fall, weather permitting. Golfers should call ahead to confirm indoor operation hours. Here are a few to consider as autumn’s chill nips at your cleats.

WHITE PINES GOLF DOME The White Pines Golf Dome measures 300 feet wide, by 300 feet long and is 100 feet high. It maintains a constant temperature of about 65 degrees, regardless of the freezing weather outside. Amenities include five target greens surrounded by bunkers, 45 foot long contoured putting green, six suspended hitting targets for accuracy practice, more than 40 hitting stations on two levels and GOLFZON virtual golf simulators. Ripe and ready for fun Fall’s bounty arrives with great seasonal events | By ELIZABETH HARMON

I

n song, December wins the title of “the most wonderful time of the year.” Here in the western suburbs, autumn runs a close second.

Whether it’s family fun, a unique date night or a stunning walk through fall color, there’s plenty of reasons to get outside. Stay close to home and sample the best the season has to offer.

Abbey Farms, 850 Butterfield Rd, Aurora, was established in the late 1940s as a Christmas tree farm to benefit the Monks of Marmion Academy. Since the late 2000s, the farm’s focus has been on providing seasonal family fun at an affordable price.

General admission tickets include admission to the Pumpkin Daze Park, which has a variety of kid-friendly attractions, and to the Farm’s two corn mazes, which are among the area’s largest. There’s also a community fire pit, and on Saturday evenings, a family movie in the park.

A few items cost extra, including pumpkins, special attractions and gift shop items. Food, beer and wine, and s’mores kits are also available for purchase.

Evening-only admission includes the corn mazes and fire pit, and is a popular option for teens, and a great date-night for couples of any age. “It’s something you can do only at this time of year, and something different than just a regular night out at a restaurant,” says Adam Voirin, Abbey Farms’ COO. During October’s Pumpkin Daze festival, each weekend offers a different theme, with games and contests available to general admission guests.

“There are a lot of pumpkin festivals around, but we wanted our Pumpkin Daze to be like an old-time county fair,” says Voirin.

County Farm weekend, Oct. 7 and 8, will feature potato sack races, corn-husking and a donut eating contest. Farm Olympics weekend, Oct. 14 and 15, offers corn maze races, post-pounding contests and more. “These are fun activities people don’t get to do in their daily lives, but are safe for the entire family,” says Voirin.

Hometown Heroes weekend, Oct. 21 and 22, honors local veterans, fire and police officers, Trick or Treat Weekend, Oct. 28 and 29, invites kids to wear costumes and collect treats from stations around the farm.

Experts predict that folks in the United States will shell out almost $8 billion dollars this year in order to decorate our yards with spooky images and provide proper treats for the ghosts and goblins that visit our doorsteps. We even will spend $350 million on costumes … for our pets!

That’s right, 16 percent of us will enlist Fido and Fluffy as we attempt to create a cute “Chewbacca” or “Cleo-cat-ra” for our friends. But, does your Dachshund pup really enjoy being a hot dog for the day? Or do our furry family members have other thoughts about

our favored supernatural holiday? Halloween can definitely be an enjoyable time for the whole family, but there are some key things to remember so the evening doesn’t turn monstrous for your furry friends.

SOWING THE SEEDS OF SUCCESS Deb Hornell helps her clients meet challenges and exceed expectations.

D

eb Hornell is a certified Master Gardner through the University of Illinois Extension. But the 61-yearold Glen Ellyn resident takes the concepts of gardening much further than the soil in her backyard.

Hornell is founder/president of Hornell Partners Inc., a consulting firm that works with companies and individuals to create solutions to business challenges.

She has built her brand around the motto, “cultivating environments for growth,” because that’s the approach she takes in life: finding ways to cultivate the environment and grow leaders, through executive coaching, leadership development, even parenting.

A lot of her work revolves around asking the tough questions that help people reach clarity regarding how they can find excellence in their lives and, ultimately, lead a full life.

In fact, her 2013 book, “Good Things for a Full Life,” provides 40 chapters – and 40 life lessons highlighted with easy-to-remember one-liners – that she has used to motivate herself and others to overcome obstacles, like “choices beget choices,” “envision your legacy” and more.

All of her coaching circles back to cultivating the natural strengths and passions in people so that they can succeed. “[When] growing leaders, you need to put people in the right places where they can grow,” she says.

ver the past 10 years, medical breakthroughs in treatments and improvements in screening technology have led to reported better quality of life and increased survival rates for women who are diagnosed with breast cancer. More women are aware of the importance of screening, so more tumors are being diagnosed when they’re much smaller and at a lower stage. As October becomes awash in pink, women are reminded to discuss their breast cancer risks with their doctors to assess what screenings are right for them.

“It’s very important for patients to come in and hear other women’s stories and see that they can function and enjoy life with breast cancer,” she explained. “We’re an important part of their treatment. There’s a benefit to living a healthy lifestyle. We believe that nutrition, exercise and stress management are all very important.”

Ghost Walks highlight hidden history | By ELIZABETH HARMON

Her company, Haunted Hometowns, offers tours to some of the spookiest landmarks in Aurora, Naperville and Elgin.

“We like to have people learn something as well as give them a good scary thrill,” says Ladley, who will launch a podcast, “Hist-Eerie,” covering “history with the lights off,” on October 1.

The Aurora tour begins at the Two Brothers Roundhouse, which Ladley calls, “a wonderful place, that’s deliciously haunted.”

Formerly Walter Payton’s Roundhouse, the Chicago Bears legend is rumored to be one of the building’s spectral inhabitants, Ladley says.

“The building was his pride and joy, and people think he’s still there, hanging out at his favorite spot.”

The walking tour also visits the Paramount Theater, Leland Tower, the site of a number of suicides, and several other points along the river and downtown Aurora.

The other tour is to the Pauper’s Cemetery at the former site of the Elgin mental asylum which was demolished in the 1980s. The cemetery’s hidden, isolated location makes it particularly scary, and Ladley only allows tour participants who are 16 or older.

“You go through a tree tunnel and come out into a football field sized area with row after row of identical concrete stones,” says Ladley, who calls the tour “intense.”

Though the setting is straight from a horror movie, Ladley wants her guests to come away with something more than fear of the patients buried there.

Because record keeping was irregular, “we don’t know who all was there. But from 1900 through the 1960s the treatments they were subjected to were horrible. The people buried in the cemetery had no other family so they’re buried with the only people who loved them.”

For the past thirteen years, Frantz has owned and produced “The Official Ghost Tour of Naperville.”

His tour of the community’s historic and downtown district includes the sites of creepy Naperville stories such as “The Grave Robber Next Door.”

It was the grave robber story that initially sparked Frantz’s interest in what he refers to as Naperville’s fringe history. “It was one of those buried stories that no one wanted to talk about. I did a lot of research into Naperville in the 1800s and dug up a lot of details,” he says.

It took Frantz and fellow researcher Chuck Kennedy more than a year, but eventually they determined that the grave robber tale was true.

In 1912 a grieving husband dug up the body of his young bride and brought the corpse back to a barn behind their home, with the hope of resuscitating her.

Though the barn is no longer standing, its former site is one of the 90 minute tour’s most active stops.

While Frantz prefers to keep the emphasis on the stories and history, he says that tour guests have snapped mysterious photos. He recommends simple cell phone cameras as the best tool for the job, because they don’t filter out infra-red light.

Halloween is right around the corner, and the suburbs offer plenty of family-friendly events that everyone can enjoy. From parades to trick-or-treating to costume contests, the fun is endless! Here’s a look at some of the holiday happenings across the area.

You’ll encounter all sorts of ghosts, ghouls and creepy creatures on the Haunted Forest Tour at Twin Lakes Park on Sat. Oct. 21. The “spooky” tours run from 5 to 6:30 p.m., while the “sheer terror” tours run from 7 to 9:30 p.m. Cost is $6.

Participants will walk the first half of the tour before narrators conduct the remainder of the tour on a hayrack.

Grab the costumes and bring the kids to the Wheaton Park District’s Halloween Happening from 5 to 7:30 p.m. on Fri. Oct. 20 at the Community Center. Some of the activities include strolling magic from Jason Kollum, a costume parade, airbrush tattoos, “trunk or treat,” a trick or treat trail and “It’s Batastic” at Lincoln Marsh.

GLEN ELLYN The annual Halloween Spooktacular Festival and Parade is Sat. Oct. 28. The parade, which features hundreds of costumed children, kicks off at 9:45 a.m. at Prairie Path Park, south of the train station between Park Blvd. and Forest Ave. and ends at Main St. After the parade and until 1 p.m., families are invited to enjoy crafts, live music and trick-or-treating at local participating businesses. The Glen Art Theatre also is showing two free family-friendly Halloween movies this month.

The free event begins at 4:30 p.m., and in addition to trick-or-treating, will feature carnival games, a bounce house and a parade of costumes at 6:30 p.m. Concessions will be available.

ELMHURST Families are invited to dress up in their Halloween costumes for the Elmhurst Park District’s Fall Fest from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Sat. Oct. 14 at Wild Meadows Trace. The event features trick-ortreating, balloon animals, fall games, an inflatable corn maze, crafts and food trucks. This event is free.

Head down to the City Centre on Sat. Oct. 28 for a “Boo-tiful Saturday” as kids can trick-or-treat from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at participating downtown businesses. Don’t forget your candy bag!

Oct. 28 at which children parade around downtown La Grange as they trick-or-treat at downtown businesses. Afterwards, there will be plenty of activities like pumpkin bowling, cupcake decorating and a scavenger hunt at participating merchants. Line up for the walk at 10 a.m. at Cossitt School and the rest of the festivities begin at noon. Parents will love the grown-up activities like wine and beer tastings, pumpkin martinis, fall decorating tips and art events.
