Having called Lombard my home for the past 34 years, I take great pride in the strong sense of community and small-town feel we have managed to preserve as we have grown into a suburb of nearly 45,000 residents. Still, I remain committed to fostering a vibrant and diverse local economy and advancing our long-term development goals to ensure Lombard remains a thriving place to live, work, and play.

Being a lifelong “Lombardian,” 58 years and counting, it never ceases to amaze me what we all accomplish working together as a community. For example, making each Lilac Season more successful than the one before it. The lilacs that were originally brought over in the 1900’s from William and Helen Plum continue to bloom each spring. Lilac Season starts with the lilac princess selection and coronation organized by the Lombard Junior Womans Club to the Lilac Time Arts & Craft Fair and the Lilac Ball that the chamber produces and concludes with the lilac parade.

The chamber works on wonderful events for all seasons including the Spooktacular in October in partnership with the Lombard Business Alliance and Candy Cane Lane, a holiday event in partnership with the Lombard Park District. Thanks to our incredible staff at the Lombard Park District, we have many beautiful public parks for all of us to enjoy throughout the seasons, and of course the crown jewel of Lombard, Lilacia Park where visitors enjoy the grounds throughout the year from the first lilac and tulip blooms in the spring to the Jingle Bell Jubilee in the winter.

And our incredible events and programming wouldn’t be possible without the support of the Village of Lombard Trustees and well as all of the village staff.

As our Board of Directors and I partner with the many fine organizations in Lombard, it is a truly humbling experience to be part of a much larger entity. I am excited for the new dining options and welcoming new retail spaces, celebrating our beautiful library and watching our housing continue to grow our community without losing its hometown feel. Events like the weekly farmers market invite everyone to take time to shop and mingle together under the warm summer sun.

In putting this guide together, I and the Chamber Board of directors hope that you use it as a resource, and helpful guide, to help you shop and support “Lombard First” whenever possible.

The “Annie-Versary” invites all ages to celebrate the independent and self-assured character who won the hearts of generations of Americans.

Whether you remember her for her indomitable spirit, moral compass, or fiery red curls, Little Orphan Annie remains an important icon in American culture 100 years after the character’s debut in the namesake comic strip

Affectionately dubbed the “AnnieVersary,” the Lombard Historical Society will host a series of events that will run from April 26, 2024 through Dec. 23, 2024, commemorating Little Orphan Annie’s enduring legacy and paying tribute to Harold Gray, the creative genius who brought her to life while he was living in Lombard.

The Little Orphan Annie comic strip first appeared in syndication in The New York Daily News on Aug. 5, 1924. Of the more than 40 comic strips running at the time, Little Orphan Annie became the fourth to feature a female in a prominent role. Defying gender stereotypes, Annie quickly became a beloved and unexpected heroine, known for her many adventures solving crimes alongside her dog Sandy — often persevering through dangerous situations. By the 1930s, Little Orphan Annie was one of the most popular strips in syndication.

to admire and love,” said Lombard Historical Society Executive Director Alison Costanzo. “That is the mere tipping point for Annie’s relevance and why we created ‘Annie’-Versary. There is much to recognize historically and throughout popular entertainment. We hope to showcase the broad reach of Annie throughout the decades.”

The exhibition, “Leapin’ Lizards 100 Years of Little Orphan Annie” showcases the life of Harold Gray and the rich history of Little Orphan Annie through artifacts from LHS collection, loaned artifacts, and more. The exhibition will open to the public on April 27, 2024, in the Lombard Historical Society Carriage House, open to visitors from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday.

“On behalf of everyone who embraced Annie in print and on radio, and then later on the musical stage and big screen, it is our honor to welcome you to Lombard to celebrate Gray’s masterful storytelling and the inspirational, wily ways of Little Orphan Annie,” Costanzo said.

In addition to the exhibition there will be a number of exciting activities, including a house walk featuring the homes that Gray lived in during his time in Lombard. Explore these historic locations, including one in the 200 block of South Stewart and an Italianate-style home on North Main Street. While these are private

residences today, the Lombard Historical Society, in partnership with the Kiwanis Club of Lombard, invites you to join us for a special tour on June 22. Discover the history of these homes and the neighborhoods.

“We’re excited to show how big Annie is and to talk about her history,” said Rae Slowik, Education and Collections Manager. “Lombard is not a footnote in her story. It is a big part of the cartoon.”  In addition to events throughout the year the Lombard Historical Society is planning a special series of events to celebrate her birthday from July 30Aug. 4. This includes an “Annie” themed art activity at the Sheldon Peck Homestead, an outdoor screening of the 1982 “Annie” film at Lilacia Park and concludes with a birthday party on Maple Street.

After spending time indoors over the cold winter months, people are ready to go outdoors and enjoy the longer days and warmer temperatures. A must-see is Lilacia Park, located at 150 S. Park Ave. This 8.5-acre park provides visitors with walking paths, spacious benches, and peaceful views. Each year there are more than 700 lilacs and 35,000 tulips that bloom. The park is best known as home to the annual Lilac Time festival, that takes place during the first two weeks of May.

PARADISE BAY WATER PARK

Ready to beat the summer heat? Paradise Bay Water Park offers several ways to do just that. The award-winning aquatic facility at 437 E. St. Charles Road features a leisure pool, spouts, fountains, water prays, a whirlpool, a water walk, four water slides, a tot pool, a dive well, a lap pool, and more. Stop by the full-service concession stand for a snack while visiting.

Swimmers can sign up for various classes, including swim lessons, water fitness classes, and Lombard Waves Swim and Dive Team. The facility also hosts various special events throughout the season, from Rubber Ducky Night to Customer Appreciation Night.

MADISON MEADOW ATHLETIC CENTER

Madison Meadow Athletic Center is a state-of-the-art

38,000-square-foot facility of the Lombard Park District established on June 30, 2018. LOMBARD GOLF COURSE

Challenge friends to a round of golf this season. The Lombard Golf Course, a nine-hole facility located at 2400 W. Butterfield Road, can accommodate foursomes and has rates for residents and nonresidents.

While some shopping centers are facing challenges, Yorktown Center is excited for the new dining and entertainment options opening in 2024 and the start of construction to bring new residences to the location.

In 2024 there will be a flurry of activity at Yorktown Center as work begins on the first of two phases to construct a residential development on the 12-acre site, explained Lisa Aurand, marketing manager for Yorktown Center.

In spring 2024 construction will begin on the first half of the multi-family residences and an outdoor communal park called The Square that will serve residents and visitors and will host entertainment, pop-up events, markets, art installations and much more year-round, Aurand said.

The first residential phase will be completed in 2025 and then work will begin on the second set of residences. When both phases are complete there will nearly 700 new residences on the site.

“These additions will further evolve our mission to ensure the viability of Yorktown Center and enhance the community now and for generations to come,” Aurand said.

The new development promotes a lifestyle that makes it easy to walk to destinations and includes new restaurants opening in 2024. Locallyowned Empire Burger+ Brew will

open its second location at Yorktown Center in 2024 as well as the Mexican restaurant Ancho & Agave, opening its second location in Illinois.

Inside, the shopping center will welcome Tapville, where guests can pour their own beverage to enjoy while they shop. The shopping center’s Eatery will add a new venue with the addition of Popeyes Louisiana Chicken. Also opening in 2024 will be the addition of Dave & Buster’s which features an entertainment and dining concept.

The additions at Yorktown Center will help complement the dining and shopping experiences throughout the community including its downtown, along Roosevelt and St. Charles roads. Find family recipes to new spins on traditional dishes the Lombard community is home to a range of dining options to fit every taste.

For those who prefer to sip and savor, Lombard is proud to be home to small breweries including Noon Whistle Brewery, who launched their first brew, First Born, right in Lombard in 2014. Since then, the Roosevelt Road brewery has been creating batches of fresh beers, including a special emphasis on wild sours. To enjoy a beer crafted just several feet from your table is as fresh as it can get. And don’t miss a chance to check out their menu items as well.

LOMBARD FARMERS MARKET RETURNS

Lombard is the place to be on Tuesday evenings with the return of the annual Lombard Farmers Market. Located on South Park Avenue in downtown Lombard, the Farmers Market includes local food vendors, hand-crafted items and live entertainment. Enjoy a stroll to gather fresh fruits and vegetables harvested locally and take time to catch up with neighbors throughout the warmer months. Bring along a blanket and chair to make it a picnic as you enjoy the weekly live musical entertainment. The 2024 Market will open May 21 and continue to Oct. 1.

MARKS 1 YEAR IN NEW LOCATION HELEN PLUM LIBRARY

In 2024, Helen Plum Library is celebrating the first anniversary of opening its new building at 411 South Main St. and the many ways it continues to serve the community.

The Grand Opening celebrations in April 2023 brought more than 5,500 people through its doors, and throughout the first year that momentum has continued.

The numbers tell a story. Since its opening, the new library building has received 191,733 visitors and checked

out 498,925 materials. Private study rooms for all ages have been one of the most popular additions in the new facility, with 6,251 uses in the last year. The expanded programming spaces have allowed the library to present more than 800 programs, from story times and hands-on crafting to technology classes and musical performances.  What’s harder to quantify are the countless ways the new library has enriched the lives of its users. In February, the library celebrated Love

Your Library Month, asking visitors to share what they love about Helen Plum. The answers were posted on paper hearts that covered an entire wall in the lobby. Each handwritten note conveyed sincere appreciation for the library’s spaces, programs, and materials. Patrons wrote that they planned entire European vacations using library resources, studied for their MCATs in the library’s quiet spaces, and found a safe, welcoming environment to spend time with their children. One visitor simply

wrote, “The library is a second home.”

The library proudly supports Lombard as a whole by working with community partners throughout the year. The library hosted events at Jingle Bell Jubilee and during Lilac Time, partnering with the Village of Lombard, Lombard Park District, and Lombard Historical Society, and has participated in the Lombard Farmers Market.

The library has hosted three Versiti blood drives which helped save up to 228 lives, and held many community donation drives including the Lombard Fire Department Toy Drive, multiple Outreach House drives, and more.

The library services extend well beyond books and media. Representatives from the DuPage County Health Department have visited the library to assist patrons with Medicaid sign-up as and the Women, Infants, and Children (WIC) Mobile Clinic, which supports mothers in need. In the first year at the new building, the library has helped hundreds of people acquire English language skills with the College of DuPage.

Since opening, the library has continued to grow and add services. In the Studio 411 makerspace, adults can reserve time slots to use the library’s Circuit cutting machines or send requests for 3D Printing. Teen video gaming is open in the Hive, where students in grades 6-12 can play on the Nintendo Switch console, with more consoles to come.

In the Robin’s Nest early learning area, families can find play features that are routinely updated. The library’s youngest patrons may find the “Plum Pizzeria” for taking orders and making pizzas, or a post office where children can sort and deliver mail, complete with wearable mail truck costumes. In the coming months, the library will host its annual Summer Reading Program, host an art exhibit in partnership with the Morton Arboretum Photographic Society, and debut even more makerspace equipment in Studio 411.  What was once a long-awaited dream is now a vibrant community hub where visitors can attend music performances, learn to use new technology, play in a pretend pizzeria, or simply get lost in a good book.
