On behalf of the Lombard Area Chamber of Commerce it is once again my pleasure to welcome you into our wonderful community. Moving into my third year of serving Lombard, it has been a joy to see the exciting growth and changes that 2022 has brought us, and I am eagerly anticipating what that momentum brings us in 2023 and beyond.

One of the things I never get tired of is the rich history of Lombard. Starting in the 1830’s and moving to the 1900’s with William & Helen Plum bringing over 200 varieties of Lilacs back to our beautiful Village. These Lilacs are celebrated each year with may events, including the Lilac Parade, the Lilac Ball, the Little Lady Lilac Ball, and our annual crowning of our Lilac Princesses by the Lombard Junior Women’s Club.

As the Board of Directors and I continue to lead the Chamber in this unique business climate, I can’t help but be amazed at how this community continues to thrive and grow. New housing, new retail, additions to our Historical Society, and a beautiful new library are some of the magnificent changes that have blessed our community. We are seeing many beloved events returning, including the Lilac Parade, Wine Walks, and Spooktacular. We are now even hosting a Farmers Market in Downtown Lombard! I am so glad to see the strong sense of community that makes Lombard unique. I see this reflected in residents who shop small businesses, support local events, and commit time to organizations and groups. It warms my heart to see the residents consistently “talk the talk” and “walk the walk”.

THE LILAC VILLAGE

Lombard is famed for its lilacs. Lilacia Park in Lombard is world-renowned horticultural showcase that features over 700 lilacs and 25,000 tulips annually. From programming to finding a perfect gift, there’s always plenty to check out at the Lombard Historical Society.

In the fall of 2022, construction was completed on the addition and renovations in The Carriage House, which was built in 1887 and moved from its original location to its present site at 23 W. Maple.

The construction at The Carriage House improves the Lombard Historical Society operations, explained Executive Director Alison Constanzo. Along with staff offices, The Carriage House has new programming and flex space. There is a new full-service kitchen and room for staff office, as well as the Lilac Emporium Gift Shop. The building is also ADA accessible. “We’re very excited to have this space for programs, meetings and much more,” Constanzo said.

The Carriage House is open daily 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Additionally, the Lombard Historical Society manages operations at its Victorian Cottage and the Sheldon Peck Homestead. Hours at this locations vary by

season, check the website lombardhistory. org for times or to reserve a group visit.

This summer the Lombard Historical Society is excited to host two temporary exhibitions. A look at the fashions from the 1950s-1980s, “Fifteen Minutes of Fame” will open June 1 through early Sept. 23. This exhibit is designed to pair up with the College of DuPage’s exhibit on artist Andy Warhol, Constanzo said.

Train enthusiasts and history buffs will want to mark the calendars for the exhibit, “Lombard: A Three Train Town,” that explores the three train lines that passed through Lombard. The exhibit runs from Saturday, July 29 through Thursday, Nov. 30, 2023.

“Though temporary, these exhibits will provide a wonderful look at some of the local history,” Constanzo said.

The Lombard Historical Society maintains a vibrant calendar of events and programming throughout the year, thanks in part to the incredible support of its volunteers, Constanzo said. Volunteers are able to select their service hours, with some helping on a weekly basis and

others lending their time seasonally to assist with events.

“We love our volunteers and it’s a wonderful way to connect with the community,” Constanzo said. While the volunteers and staff enjoy the spotlight on the past, one can find plenty of “presents” for themselves and others, at the delightful Lilac Emporium Gift Shop located in The Carriage House. The shop carries a variety of items from cute T-Shirts to coasters, home décor and so much more.

“We have lots of unique items from Victorian-style jewelry, to teas and coffees,” Constanzo said. “We try to feature local business and of course, you can find a lot of items that are purple and lilac colors.”

After spending time indoors over the cold winter months, people are ready to get outdoors and enjoy the longer days and warmer temperatures. The Lombard Park District offers plenty of opportunities for people to enjoy some fun in the sun. Take a look at some of the activities that we have planned!

GO TO A PARK

A must see is Lilacia Park! Lilacia Park is located at 150 S. Park Ave., this 8.5 acre park provides visitors not only with walking paths and spacious benches, but peaceful views. Each year, the park sees over 700 lilacs and 35,000 tulips in bloom. The park is best known as being home to the annual Lilac Time festival, held during the first two weeks of May.

PARADISE BAY WATER PARK

Ready to beat the summer heat?

Paradise Bay Water Park offers several ways to do just that. The award-winning aquatic facility located at 437 E. St. Charles Road features a leisure pool, spouts, fountains, water prays, whirlpool, water walk, four water slides, tot pool, dive well, lap pool and more. Swimmers can sign up for a variety of classes including swim lessons, water fitness classes, and Lombard Waves Swim and Dive Team. The facility also hosts special events throughout the season.

Tom and Pattie Kidwell considered opening their first suburban location, they set their sights on area Tom knew well.

“When Tom saw this location, he knew it was where he wanted to put the restaurant,” Pattie Kidwell said. “Tom grew up in Villa Park and knew the Lombard area well.”

After handling most of the interior renovations himself at the location along St. Charles Road and continuing to manage their two restaurants in Chicago, the Kidwells were proud to launch Ground Level 105 in early 2020. While the grand opening was soon shadowed by the business closings and challenges of the next year and half, Pattie Kidwell said the community was so supportive they were able to navigate the choppy

waters and today, they are excited to see their restaurant business thriving as they provide guests with delicious meals, excellent service and a place to celebrate with friends, family.

From casual dining, quick bites to multi-course meals, Lombard is home to a wide variety of restaurant options. There are long-time family restaurants serving up recipes that go back for generations to the newcomers taking twists and turns on traditional menu favorites. “We’re very family friendly and we love seeing a lot of young families who’ve discovered our restaurant,” Pattie Kidwell said.

Lombard offers dining and shopping experience in its downtown, along St. Charles Road and Butterfield Road which continues to evolve as new businesses transform the busy traffic areas and Roosevelt Road. Local events help provide support to the downtown dining and shopping district, drawing out new visitors to re-discover the community. In 2022 a Farmers Market on Tuesday evenings was added to the community calendar in the downtown. While the market provided a great way to shop for fresh produce, handcrafted items, it also became the place to be on Tuesday evenings, with live music and

entertainment, said Melissa Boltz, president and CEO of Lombard Area Chamber of Commerce & Industry.

“People would bring their chairs and make a fun evening of enjoying the market and live music,” Boltz said.

The Farmers Market is slated for its return, from 2 to 7 p.m. Tuesday evenings May 23 to Oct. 17.

Yorktown Center remains a popular destination in Lombard, with more than 150 retail, dining, fitness and entertainment options. The area underwent a recent renovation to help keep the destination appearing fresh and inviting. Watch for even more changes to the property with proposals to add residential space as well as several new businesses to further help transform the destination developed in the 1960s.

Helen Plum Library

This April, the Helen Plum Library opened the doors of its brand-new facility at 411 S. Main St. The 50,000-squarefoot, two-story building welcomes visitors with floor-to-ceiling windows, programs and spaces for all ages, new technologies, and plenty of cozy places to sit and read.

The Helen M. Plum Memorial Library was established in 1928 thanks to a

bequest by Colonel William R. Plum in honor of his wife. Lombard’s very first library building began as the Plum’s private home, filled with Josiah Reade’s personal collection. In 1963, a new building was constructed to house the library. Library administration identified the need for a new building as far back as 1999, and a successful referendum finally passed in 2016. At long last, our community is now able to step through the doors and explore the new building for themselves.

Outside, a new drive-up window offers a convenient way for patrons to drop off materials and even pick up materials on hold. Inside, the library has conference and meeting spaces for visitors to meet and mingle, plus 11 private study rooms for 2–4 people where kids, teens, and adults can work solo or collaborate. Public computers and Wi-fi are available throughout the building, and the second floor includes a large computer lab for technology training and classes.

Also on the second floor, you’ll find Studio 411, the library’s new makerspace. In Studio 411, library patrons will have access to 3D printers, a laser cutter, Cricut electronic cutting machines, sewing machines, and several other maker tools and supplies for DIY beginners and craft enthusiasts alike.

The youngest library visitors can play in The Robin’s Nest, an earlyliteracy space for hands-on learning and creative play. The Youth Services Department also includes small and large program rooms and an outdoor children’s garden. Teens have a place of their very own on the second floor with study rooms, young adult books, and The Hive, an area for teen programs and gaming.

If you just want a quiet place to read, you can grab a freshly brewed coffee from the vending café, pick out a book, and have a seat in front of the fireplace on the second floor for a perfect afternoon at your new library.
