CASA director Lisa Drake builds a support network, one volunteer at a time

L

isa Drake didn’t set out to be the executive director at one of the area’s top non profits. Her career path is built on layers of experiences as a willing volunteer, coordinator and fundraiser.

Drake is the executive director of Court Appointed Special Advocates of DuPage County, known as CASA. She oversees a small staff and the work of more than 150 volunteers who represent the best interests of nearly 300 children in the DuPage County juvenile court system. These children, who are neglected and abused, are in court due to the actions of their parents and legal guardians. It is CASA and its volunteers who advocate for them.

“These are some of the most complex cases in the court system,” Drake said, explaining how a volunteer will spend an average of three years with a case, which can include one child or several siblings. Her volunteers visit the child, speak on behalf of them in court and attend every court hearing.

For Drake, her first experience supporting a nonprofit came as a young adult. While juggling multiple jobs and taking night classes at the College of DuPage, she decided to become involved with the Big Brothers, Big Sisters program. In addition to her work with a “Little Sister,” she joined a committee planning fundraising events.

“I really loved that program,” Drake said. “I really enjoyed the camaraderie, doing good work and helping others. We were doing fun events.”

After she married and became a mom of two young boys, she sought out an opportunity to socialize with other moms and found her way to friendship and activities with Parent & Child Education Society, P.A.C.E.S., a nonprofit organization in DuPage that provided programming as well as playgroups and

activities for family. It wasn’t long before Drake was a regional coordinator for the Glen Ellyn/ Wheaton area group.

As her sons outgrew play dates Drake became involved in the Wheaton Junior Woman’ Club and found friendship in the service-orientated group. It wasn’t unusual for Drake to bring along her young boys to activities, finding roles for them whether the group was cleaning a park or planting a garden.

“I tried to show them let’s help out where we can,” Drake said.

She took her philosophy of helping others thousands of miles away when she was given an opportunity to travel to Berlin, El Salvador and teach women in the small village how to sew. Drake, who had studied Spanish in college, was in a completely different world where basics such as water and electricity could be scarce. It was a life-changing experience.

“We just became so close,” she said. “It was amazing. The work we were doing was creating real change in this community.”

In 2006 she accepted a position with the Wheaton Chamber of Commerce as director of membership and in 2007 she became the executive director. Under her leadership membership grew and a new partnership between the chamber and Wheaton Park District lead to the Taste of Wheaton, which has become a popular annual event in the community. Today she is an active member of Wheaton Chamber of Commerce and two other nearby chambers.

For Drake, it’s a dedication to her community and lending talents and time where she can.

“You do things because you can,” Drake said.

“You can’t wait for someone else to do it.”

istorians know Cantigny for its First Division military museum, and its historic McCormick mansion.

Boy Scouts know Cantigny as an awesome place to camp. Artists and photographers know Cantigny for its lush gardens.

But if you haven’t strolled up the stretching fairways, or tried your hand on the immaculate greens of Cantigny Golf, you may not know Cantigny at all. And you’re missing out on an experience like none other in the suburbs.

Cantigny Golf opened in 1989 and it didn’t take long for the Wheaton course to receive some heady recognition. The January 1990 issue of Golf Digest named Cantigny the “Best New Public Course in America.”

Now, as it celebrates its 25th anniversary year, Cantigny remains a favorite with area golfers and has big plans for the 2014 season.

Cantigny Golf was dedicated on June 5, 1989, with two-time U.S. Open Champion Andy North striking the inaugural tee shot. Two years prior, Mike Nass was hired to oversee construction, working with renowned golf course architect Roger Packard.

Nass, now Cantigny Golf’s executive director, finds it a bit hard to believe his “baby” is now 25 years old.

Operations include the year-round Cantigny Golf Academy, the 9-hole Cantigny Youth Links and a full-service clubhouse with dining and banquet facilities.

“This is our 25th anniversary and I have been here for all 25,” says Nass. “It is exciting for me to talk to some of our guests that have also experienced all 25 years of our existence and to be able to reminisce. I am also excited about sharing our history with some of our newer guests and being able to grow our community.”

A first-time visitor might think that Cantigny is actually older than 25 years. The 300-acre, 27-hole layout has a mature look and feel thanks to the

As Cantigny Park officials prep for the busy summer season, its golf course marks 25 glorious years

By SHERRI DAUSKURDAS stately oaks and hickories lining the fairways and surrounding the greens. Golfers love that aspect of Cantigny, along with interesting “signature” features such as the flowering bridge boxes and the Dick Tracy bunker on Lakeside No. 9. A welldeveloped caddie program, unusual for a public golf facility, also sets Cantigny apart.

The list of famous visiting golfers includes Tom Watson, Lee Trevino, Fred Couples, Juli Inkster, Dave Stockton, Dustin Johnson and Sergio Garcia. The course attracts professional athletes from other sports, too, such as Bo Jackson, Ernie Banks, Ryne Sandberg, Greg Maddux and Brian Urlacher. Last year, Jonathan Toews played Cantigny just days after his Blackhawks won the Stanley Cup. Current PGA Tour pro Kevin Streelman is the player most closely associated with Cantigny.

The Wheaton native played, practiced and worked at Cantigny during his amateur days. He has returned several times to lead junior golf clinics and offer encouragement to area youth.

In fact, when asked what best distinguishes Cantigny from other golf courses in the area, Nass points to a deep commitment to children in the community. Some 1,400 young golfers learn the game (and sportsmanship) at Cantigny every season. Most of them hone their skills on the Youth Links. Still others join the caddie program.

“Watching our young employees mature and develop into the next generation of leaders, has been an exciting part of the process. It’s an amazing journey,” says Nass, who has seen 11 of those caddies go on to win Chick Evans Foundation Scholarships, earning full college tuition and housing.

So what can golfers expect from the 25th season at Cantigny?

“The golf course continues to get better each year,” says Patrick Lynch, Cantigny’s head golf professional. “We developed a long-range master plan for course improvement in 2005, and each m y s u b u r b a n l i f e . c o m /m a g a z i n e

year we upgrade one or two of the holes in some way.”

Lynch has been with the facility for the past 16 years.

“Most recently, we completely renovated one of our most memorable holes, #2 on Woodside, which is a par 5, featuring a creek that runs along the right side of the first part of the hole, then cuts across the fairway twice – once at 100 yards out and again right in front of the green.”

The 25th anniversary will be a consistent theme throughout the season at Cantigny this year.

“Having been here for 16 of those seasons, it’s been a lot of fun to reflect back on everything we’ve accomplished over the years: hosting big events (including the Illinois State Amateur this July), winning awards for the course and the staff, building successful youth programs, and establishing ourselves as one of Chicago’s top destinations for golf.”

Cantigny also is introducing a new customer appreciation program called “Anniversary Club” to help with the celebration. The fee to join the Anniversary Club is $199 and includes an 18-hole round of golf with cart and a dozen Titleist Pro-V1 golf balls. Cardholders will be treated to special events and offers throughout the year, including complimentary clinics, “play with the pro” opportunities, and “bring a friend” specials.

“We have to stay abreast of the trends in our industry and listen to what our guests have to say,” Nass says. “We know we are competing for our guest’s time not just with other golf facilities.

If we can’t provide them with an exceptional experience we will lose their loyalty. We are in the business of building relationships that we hope transcend the game of golf.“

As summer arrives, the waterways beckon

A

s the summer months warm up, people hit the water in the Forest Preserves of DuPage County.

Two popular locations for boating within the preserves include Silver Lake at Blackwell Forest Preserve in Warrenville and Herrick Lake at Herrick Lake Forest Preserve in Wheaton.

“Boat rental is definitely a popular option, especially in the summertime,” says Bonnie Olszewski, public affairs specialist. “… The rental boats are just kind of a fun way to get perspective or do something you maybe haven’t done since summer camp.”

Rowboat, canoe and kayak rentals are available at Silver Lake and Herrick Lake. Additionally, boats with electric trolling motors are available for rental at Herrick Lake. Olszewski says both locations get really busy on the weekends and boats are rented on a first come, first served basis.

Visitors are also welcome to launch boats from Silver Lake in Blackwell Forest Preserve, Round Meadow Lake at Hidden Lake Forest Preserve and Mallard Lake at Mallard Lake Forest Preserve.

“Mallard Lake is a neat place to get out on the water because that’s the biggest lake in the

forest preserve district,” Olszewski says. People come out to the Forest Preserve District of DuPage County because they can do just one particular activity, or spend the whole day.

“These are places that are familiar to DuPage County,” Olszewski says. “They’re really just peaceful places. It’s nice to be able to get a different perspective on the water.”

Visitors also have access to the west branch of the DuPage River through the forest preserve.

Currently, the best place to access the river is through Salt Creek. A few options for entrance are available, including at Fullersburg Woods in Oak Park and Salt Creek Park in Wood Dale.

The forest preserve also offers a take-out only location at Salt Creek Greenway in Elmhurst.

“We get all ages on the waters,” Olszewski says. “People even bring their dogs.”

All boats on the forest preserve’s waters will need a permit. Both day passes and annual passes are available for purchase at Visitor Services District Headquarters, 3S580 Naperville Road, Wheaton. Daily permits can also be purchased at the Blackwell Forest Preserve Boat Rental Area and at the steel lock boxes at Blackwell, Mallard Lake and Hidden Lake forest preserves.

“I always think, when I’m out in a boat, the perspective is different,” Olszewski says.

In addition to providing basic instruction to those renting on how to maneuver boats, the forest preserve district also offers several events throughout the season, including fishing programs covering various techniques, and programs like fishing by kayak, kayaking basics and paddle with a ranger programs.

“Kayaking is a really popular sport at this time,” Hambel says.

If you prefer your water recreation a bit less serene, there are a multitude of nearby waterparks, filled with pools, slides, lazy rivers and more to keep you cool and the kids entertained all season long.

At Benesenville Water Park and Splash Pad a 155 -oot long water slide plunges you into cool refreshment. Diving boards and drop slides keep everyone busy and happy while Mom and Dad lounge in sun or shade. An alternative to the pool is the 2500 square foot splash pad, boasting sprays and jets, and a fully interactive play environment for young and old alike.

F

or women and golf, acceptance has been a long time coming.

Twenty-one years ago, a group of local women contacted area golf courses, seeking permanent weekend tee times.

Of the more than 20 courses called, none would assist them. They finally connected with Peter Jans Golf Course in Evanston, which became the first course to accommodate the women, and The Fairway Network was born.

A membership-based group of women who golf together, network and socialize, the organization now boasts Saturday leagues at Jackson Park and Robert Black golf courses in Chicago, a Sunday league at Eaglewood Golf Club in Itasca and golf outings at many courses throughout the Chicago suburbs.

“Now when we call a golf course, we’re welcome, but it was 21 years in the making,” says Louise Pauly, who has been with The Fairway Network since its inception.

The Executive Women’s Golf Association (EWGA) which has a Chicagoland chapter, is a similar group, offering golf opportunities for careeroriented women. Both The Fairway Network and EWGA are open to women from throughout the Chicago area, of all ability levels, and ranging in age from mid-twenties to mid-seventies.

“When I started, very few women I knew golfed,” says Pauly. “Golfing with men is great but very different,” The Fairway Network was an excellent

way for her to meet other women with similar interests.

Judi Donovan, a member of EWGA, joined the Chicagoland chapter when she moved from Michigan five years ago. She had been looking for women with whom to golf, and had problems connecting until she joined EWGA. “Every day of the week EWGA offers different leagues. After you join, you have the opportunity to sign up for the night of the week you want and at whichever course is convenient,” she says.

The time involved in golf lends itself well to business networking. “When you’re golfing, you’re with the same group of women for several hours. There’s plenty of time to talk about nongolf-related things in a relaxed atmosphere,” says Joanne Rinaldo, chairman of The Fairway Network and a project manager for United Airlines. “And then there’s the common interest of getting your ball into that little hole, so you cheer each other on.”

Pauly is vice president of sales and marketing for Totalworks, a database marketing firm. One of the reasons she joined The Fairway Network was because of the business opportunities.

“In general you make good business contacts and I’m the poster child for that. I met the owner of Totalworks through The Fairway Network and she hired me,” she says.

Donovan is the executive director of GreenFields of Geneva, a retirement community. While she

doesn’t do much business networking through her league, the activity itself helps her to bond with the GreenFields residents. “GreenFields is surrounded by two beautiful golf courses, many of the residents are avid golfers. They love to hear about EWGA and my involvement,” she says.

Pauly says that it’s been interesting to watch the evolution of women’s golf in the country over the years since The Fairway Network was established.

“It’s certainly a generational thing. Even though the ratio of women to men golfers is still low, there are now many women golfers and also many organizations that focus on them,” she says. “It’s also an economic thing. Women hold 51 percent of the purse strings in the country so it’s good business for women to be amenable to women golfing.”

While the women of the golf networks enjoy golfing together, they also simply enjoy each other’s company, often outside of the golf course.

The golf-season ends in September. Every month between September and March, EWGA members get together, rotating at each other’s homes.

“That creates a friendship and takes you beyond the golf course,” says Donovan. Pauly agrees.

“I’d never have met these women without The Fairway Network. And yes, we have golf in common, but we find we have other things in common as well,” she says. Your life is so much richer when you diversify your friendship base.”

WHAT IS A BRAIN TUMOR? A brain tumor is an abnormal growth of tissue in the brain or central spine that can disrupt proper brain function. Doctors refer to a tumor based on where the tumor cells originated, and whether they are cancerous (malignant) or not (benign).

• Benign: The least aggressive type of brain tumor is often called a benign brain tumor. They originate from cells within or surrounding the brain, do not contain cancer cells, grow slowly, and typically have clear borders that do not spread into other tissue.

• Malignant: Malignant brain tumors contain cancer cells and often do not have clear borders. They are considered to be life threatening because they grow rapidly and invade surrounding brain tissue.

• Primary: Tumors that start in cells of the brain are called primary brain tumors. Primary brain tumors may spread to other parts of the brain or to the spine, but rarely to other organs.

Even benign tumors can destroy brain cells, produce inflammation and increase pressure in the skull. With no available cure and limited treatment options, brain tumors

dramatically impact the quality of life for all those affected. But all of us have reason to hope for a better prognosis, as collaborative research, clinical trials and advanced innovations are driving the search for both treatments and cures.

There are more than 120 types of brain and central nervous system tumors. Brain and spinal cord tumors are different for everyone.

They form in different areas, develop from different cell types, and may have different treatment options. Here is a brief guide to better understanding the different types of brain tumors, and their individual intricacies.

• Metastatic: Metastatic or secondary brain tumors begin in another part of the body and then spread to the brain. These tumors are more common than primary brain tumors and are named by the location in which they begin.

SYMPTOMS AND DIAGNOSIS Brain tumor symptoms can vary according to tumor type and location. There are times a person may have no symptoms when their brain tumor is discovered • Recurrent headaches • Issues with vision • Seizures • Changes in personality • Short-term memory loss • Poor coordination • Difficulty speaking or comprehending Diagnosing a brain tumor can be a complicated process and involve a number of specialists, depending on where you live or where you seek medical attention. A brain scan, most often an MRI, is the first step. A biopsy may be necessary, so a pathologist can be brought in to help identify the brain tumor type.

he son of a doctor, Umang Patel grew up in India knowing he wanted to follow in his father’s footsteps. “I came here in 1981 with my wife, a pharmacist, because I wanted to access the best training, and provide top notch family care,” he says.

In 1986, following his residency at Grant Hospital in Chicago, Patel, who specializes in internal and geriatric medicine, founded the Woodridge Clinic as a walk-in and urgent care clinic. “At the time Woodward Avenue was a two-lane street. It was a humble beginning and we’ve grown as the neighborhood and DuPage County grew,” he says.

Today, Woodridge Clinic has locations in Woodridge, Lombard and Lemont, and provides comprehensive care for children, adults and the elderly. The clinic has 10 practitioners on staff, including a cardiologist, audiologist, nephrologist, care manager and soon will offer Ayurvedic medicine, a holistic healing approach that originated in India, thousands of years ago. The clinic also has onsite imagining and lab services. “We offer comprehensive care under one roof and our patients really like that,” Patel says.

All physicians are board certified and the clinic is affiliated with Advocate Good Samaritan Hospital, Edward Hospital, Elmhurst Hospital, and the Adventist Hospitals in Bolingbrook and Hinsdale. Patel currently serves as the president of the DuPage County Medical Society.

“We’re not just physicians, we’re also part of the community,” he says.

Patel calls family medicine involving and rewarding. Woodridge clinic pediatrician Paola Portela, echoed his comments.

“Since we treat whole families here, if I’m seeing a child with an infectious condition like strep throat, and mom says she’s not feeling well either, I can quickly check in with her doctor and maybe get a prescription for her too,” says Portela.

New patients, young and old, receive a comprehensive assessment of their health.

“When they come in, we ask them to provide demographic information, their medical history, medications they might be taking. It’s important for us to know where they’ve been, so we can provide the best care possible as we move forward,” says Portela.

In addition to general care, the clinic specializes in diagnosis and treatment of hearing loss, diabetes, asthma and smoking cessation.

Older children with hearing problems will often exhibit signs. “They may not respond when their name is called, or react to loud noises, like a door slamming. There might also be problems at school. We’ll examine the child and determine if there is a hearing issue, then refer them to our audiologist,” Downing says.

As a geriatric specialist, Patel sees many patients who are struggling with hearing loss.

“At least 10 to 20 percent are having hearing issues. Many also experience dizziness, or ringing in the ear. They are frustrated with the choices available, because they don’t want to wear an obvious hearing aid,” says Patel.

As with younger patients, the family physician and audiologist work together to find the best treatment and enhancement tools for older adults, Patel says.

Before leaving the hospital, newborns are screened for hearing problems. If any are detected, the pediatrician will refer the family to an audiologist.

The rise in obesity has meant a rise in Type 2 Diabetes, even for children and adults without a family history of the disease.

Asthma, one of the most common chronic disorders, currently affects about 7.1 million children under the age of eighteen, according to the American Lung Association.

For adults, preventing and managing diabetes also begins with education. “We help them learn about healthy eating, in a way that fits their lifestyle. Even people who are on the go all the time and eat a lot of fast food can learn to make good decisions,” says Woodridge Clinic Family Physician Dr. Thelma Marin.

Patients who have been diagnosed also are treated with medication. “Because diabetes is an illness that effects the entire body, we also check the eyes, feet, kidneys, heart and brain,” Marin says.

Asthma triggers include both seasonal allergies and non-allergic irritants such as household cleaning products, air pollution and tobacco smoke. “If a child has these symptoms more than four to six times per year, that’s the time to see a doctor,” Downing says.

Many adults mistakenly believe that they’ve outgrown the condition. “Once an asthmatic, always asthmatic,” Marin says.

ALL SUMMER LONG The summer months are ahead and that usually means major changes around the house. The kids are home, there’s more time for fun, and everyone wants to be outdoors. As our routines begin to change with the warmer weather, it’s a good time to evaluate what we’re doing right and what needs improvement.

}SET THOSE SUMMER ROUTINES With the start of summer vacation, parents always are scrambling to find ways to keep their kids busy. But for kids, it’s often a time to relax and unwind. That usually means waking up much later than when school is in session. Make sure that your kids are still following their morning routine when it comes to oral hygiene. Just because they may wake up right before lunch doesn’t mean they get to skip brushing their teeth in the morning. Maintaining consistent habits like brushing and flossing when they first wake up will give them a fresh start to the day.

While they’re home, the tendency is to snack throughout the day. Make sure that you have healthy snacks available, like fresh fruits and vegetables, not just the typical cookies and chips. Don’t bring home any soda. Trust me, with all the graduation parties, barbecues, picnics and other special events throughout the summer, they’ll get more than their fair share of the stuff.

While they’re home, encourage them to drink more water. Regardless of the time of year, adequate water throughout the day is essential to stay healthy, and to clean out any loose carbohydrates left in their mouths after snacking.

The summer also means kids tend to stay up later at night. Once again, don’t let them off the hook with their nighttime routine. If left to their own devices, teenagers likely will end up falling asleep with a phone or a video game controller in their hands. Make sure they get through their brushing and flossing before they sleep. And remember… no midnight snacks! (Unless you want to deal with a condition I like to call “death breath”).

}HYDRATE, HYDRATE, HYDRATE Once you finally make it outside to enjoy the weather, remember that hydration is key. Make sure that everyone who is spending time outside is getting plenty of water. It should be second nature to pack water bottles for everyone, consider it one the essentials. If you play an active sport or if you exercise, consider a sports drink with added electrolytes. When you sweat you lose a lot of the body’s electrolytes along with that water, and they need to be replenished if you want to stay healthy. Just remember, sports drinks are only for drinking when you

really need them, not if you’re just holding down the couch! They’re good for you when you’re body is lacking nutrients, but if taken when the body is idle, they just add more acid and sugar to your mouth, feeding those cavity causing bacteria, but providing no benefit.

}MAKE TIME TO SEE THE DENTIST Finally, summer is a great time to catch up on those missed dental appointments. The kids are off of school, so you can get set up appointments during the day when it normally would have been impossible. Maybe someone had a cavity that needed filling, or maybe they’re just overdue for their six-month checkup and cleaning. Whatever the case may be, don’t let the summer pass you by without getting your mouth in order. The last thing you want is for dental pain to stop you from enjoying a warm and beautiful summer!

I’m not gonna lie. Despite the fact the song, “Happy” by Pharrell has been played ad nauseam for the last six months, I still get a little giddy when it comes on the radio.

It got me to thinking—these are the things I need to cherish. Amidst all the chaos and catastrophe that involves raising two young children, there’s always something to make me happy.

I recently celebrated my 37th birthday, and in the days leading up to it, decided to do a little countdown campaign on Facebook. I started 20 days out and posted “Top 20 Things I Love About Life” each day.

I’ve tried over the last several years to embrace my role as a stay-at-home mom and not become the harried housewife. Shortly after I quit my job and decided to stay home, my husband I started doing “positives” before we went to bed at night.

It was a way to overcome the stress of the kids, work, money, the house and life in general and find at least one positive thing that happened that day. For a while happiness simply meant taking a shower. But it really helped put things in perspective for us.

My countdown fell along these same lines, or that of a gratitude journal, and gave me a great amount of joy. It forced me to really focus on the things I love about life, and I was sharing that joy with others. For a while, I thought maybe I was bragging or being annoying. I didn’t do it to make my life seem perfect, because it is far from that.

But when I focus on all the wonderful things I have, I realize I live a charmed life – one that I am thankful for despite its imperfections.

It started very simply, when I could hear my son laughing his trademark belly laugh from the other room. He was probably watching one of those stupid cartoons he loves so much. I’m pretty sure they were discussing farts or poop, as those usually elicit the best guttural guffaws.

It was a sound that stopped me in my tracks and brought a grin to my face. It occurred to me that many sounds that stop me dead involve 24 | JUNE 2014 | SUBURBAN LIFE MAGAZINE

We parlayed that same idea once the kids got older and had them tell us their favorite part of the day. Eventually, my husband and I gave up

My “Top 20” were simple, and included spending time with my kids, my family, and my friends; celebrating my 10-year wedding anniversary; my job teaching group fitness classes; and running with my dog. I tried to include a picture and a short description of the significance of each one.

I actually got positive feedback, not only through “likes” and comments, but also from people I would see at the store or the school who were following the countdown. m y s u b u r b a n l i f e . c o m /m a g a z i n e

If I’ve learned anything in my 37 years on Earth, it is to be more appreciative of this life that has been given to us. It is a gift and so are the people around us.

A few days before my birthday, I had read a book to the kids about the solar system and I never realized how drastically different the other planets are from Earth. Their temperature alone is so far above or below even our most severe conditions, making it nowhere near possible to sustain life. Yet here we are, on this perfect planet, with (generally speaking) perfect conditions for life to exist. And not just exist, but thrive. I think we too often lose sight of that.

In the end, stopping and enjoying the “now” helps significantly with my state of mind especially on days like the one recently when I thought my son had chocolate on his face, until (through a comedy of errors) I realized it wasn’t chocolate. It helps get through each tempter tantrum, each load of laundry, each spill in the minivan.

This summer, some parents will be counting down the days until school starts. I will be as well, but not out of excitement to get them out of my hair, but rather to cherish the last days of having the kids home with me. This fall will be the first time both my kids are in school all day.

I’m going to count each day, and make each day count.

Some say that time travel is not real, but one step into any of the antique shops in the area will change that idea immediately. From vintage furniture to pre-Civil War items, many antique shops are bringing back the past in tangible form.

Although technically, the word “antique” refers only to items that are 100 years old or older, most antique stores include and feature items that are vintage, classic, or simply hard to find.

“This is the only business where you work 80 hours a week so you don’t have to work 40,” Zurko says. “I really don’t consider it work.

It’s fun.”

No matter the definition, there is history waiting at antique stores and vendors throughout the suburbs, as they make it easier to find valuable old items without traveling the back roads on your own.

Bob Zurko, who is the CEO of Zurko Promotions, got bit with the antique bug when he was a Chicago teacher, and hasn’t looked back after his career change.

Zurko runs a gamut of antique events throughout the western suburbs every year, an all-nighter antique show in Wheaton, and a Spook-tacular Antique Show in October for Halloween.

“We run everything from antique shows to flea markets, and each one draws a different clientele,” Zurko says. “We try to do different accents to enhance the quality and give the

shows variety.”

Since Zurko doesn’t have a stationary shop, he has the ability to switch things up for different events and organize events all over the suburbs.

Like Zurko, John Brannen and Linda Wilk, owners of the La Grange Park Antique Mall, had a similar start in the antiquing industry.

They first got the idea of opening a shop when they ran across a slew of antique malls while visiting Scottsdale, Ariz., and decided La Grange Park would be good location for one. However, they took a different route than Zurko and now own a brick-and-mortar antique haven on 31st Street.

“We came home, put in ad in the paper, and had all of our spaces rented out within a week,” Brannen says. “We were very green when we first opened and it was definitely a learning experience.” m y s u b u r b a n l i f e . c o m /m a g a z i n e

Now with more than 10 years under their belts, Brannen has become a go-to antique shop in the area. Brannen’s shop has between 25-30 vendors selling inside his space, all with various different specialties and niches, while Zurko’s production ranges from hundreds of vendors to thousands of tables depending on the event.

“We have a good variety, and I think that’s why people like coming here,” Brannen says.

“You can come here and find anything—we will have customers stay here all day just rummaging.”

In his 46 years in the industry, Zurko has learned what has worked and what doesn’t, and has started offering antique shows with unique themes throughout the years.

Zurko even offers guided trips to go antique hunting in England and Poland once a year, with the Poland trip approaching in the summer.

Nonmelanoma skin cancer can be disfiguring and sometimes life threatening, and melanoma, the deadliest form of skin cancer, will take the lives of an estimated 8,790 people in the United States this year alone.

Protect yourself from harmful summer sun

S

ummer is upon us, and with the change of the season comes more time outdoors, under the warm, and often harmful, rays of the summer sun. Protection is essential, and a new study has revealed an alarming rise in melanoma among people aged 18 to 39: over the past 40 years, rates of this potentially deadly skin cancer grew by 800 percent among young women and 400 percent among young men.

Two types of ultraviolet radiation, UVA and UVB, damage the skin, age it prematurely, and increase your risk of skin cancer. According to the Skin Cancer Foundation, UVB is the chief culprit behind sunburn, while UVA rays, which penetrate the skin more deeply, are associated with wrinkling, leathering, sagging, and other light-induced effects of aging. They also exacerbate the carcinogenic effects of UVB rays, and increasingly are being seen as a cause of skin cancer on their own.

Your best bet to avoid the harm while still enjoying the weather is sunscreen, experts say.

Sunscreens are products combining several ingredients that help prevent the sun’s ultraviolet (UV) radiation from reaching the skin. But they vary in their ability to protect against UVA and UVB. Sun Protection Factor – or SPF – is a measure of a sunscreen’s ability to prevent UVB from damaging the skin. Here’s how it works: If it takes 20 minutes for your unprotected skin to start turning red, using an SPF 15 sunscreen

theoretically prevents reddening 15 times longer — about five hours. Most sunscreens with an SPF of 15 or higher do an excellent job of protecting against UVB, according to the Skin Cancer Foundation.

Another way to look at it is in terms of percentages: SPF 15 filters out approximately 93 percent of all incoming UVB rays. SPF 30 keeps out 97 percent and SPF 50 keeps out 98 percent.

They may seem like negligible differences, but if you are light-sensitive, or have a history of skin cancer, those extra percentages will make a difference. And no sunscreen can block all UV rays.

So which sunscreen do you choose?

The answer depends on how much sun exposure you’re anticipating. In all cases the Skin Cancer Foundation recommends a broad-spectrum sunscreen offering protection against both UVA and UVB rays.

• Buy a high-quality product with an SPF of 15 or higher; check its ingredients to make sure it offers broad-spectrum protection; and decide whether it works better for everyday incidental use or extended outdoor use.

• Look for The Skin Cancer Foundation’s Seal of Recommendation, which guarantees that a sunscreen product meets the highest standards for safety and effectiveness.

• Apply one ounce of sunscreen – about a shot glass full. Studies show that most people apply only half to a quarter of that amount, which means the actual SPF they have on their body is lower than advertised, experts say.

• During a long day at the beach, one person should use around one half to one quarter of an 8 oz. bottle.

Sunscreens should be applied 30 minutes before sun exposure to allow the ingredients to fully bind to the skin.

Reapplication of sunscreen is just as important as putting it on in the first place, so reapply the same amount every two hours. Sunscreens should also be reapplied immediately after swimming, toweling off, or sweating a great deal.

Sun protection is essential to skin cancer prevention – about 90 percent of nonmelanoma skin cancers and 65 percent of melanomas are associated with exposure to UV radiation from the sun, according the www.skincancer.org. Most recently, in a rigorous study of more than 1,600 adults over the course of a decade, researchers determined that subjects applying sunscreen with an SPF of 16 daily reduced their risk of melanoma by 50 percent.

But remember, you should not rely on sunscreen alone to protect your skin against UV rays; it is just one vital part of a complete sun protection program.

The Skin Cancer Foundation has always recommended a complete sun protection regimen that includes not only sunscreen use, but also seeking shade, covering up with clothing including a wide-brimmed hat and UV-blocking sunglasses.

If you are consciously aware of that creep to your cupboards come 9 p.m., use strategies to stop the snacking. While you’re watching TV at night, get out of the kitchen, chew gum or brush your teeth. And when temptation really hits hard, drink decaffeinated tea or a glass of water, and then decide if you’re still hungry.

And here comes the sun’s damage to your hair. Summer sun, hot temperatures and high humidity equals split ends, frizz and possible permanent damage to your hair. UV rays can damage the cuticle, and all hair types are affected. And if your hair is color-treated, it increases your odds of damage.

Preventive measures are critical to keep hair healthy. Start the summer off with a good cut.

Continue to get regular trims throughout the summer. Cleanse hair with a gentle, nonalcohol-based shampoo that is specifically formulated for dry or color-treated hair. Use a deep conditioner regularly to retain your hair’s moisture. Always rinse hair with warm water,

not hot. Use hot dryers and curling irons at a minimum. Instead, let hair dry naturally. To keep stylish, wear braids or loose up-do’s. Or, consult your stylist for a no-fuss haircut that is “wash and go”.

When out in the sun, wear hats or scarves as often as possible to minimize sun exposure.

You can find these items with Ultraviolet Protection Factor (UPF) fabric, which protects you from the sun’s harmful rays. Before going outdoors, dampen your hair with water and saturate it with a leave-in conditioner that has UV protection. This creates a protective barrier from the elements. Make sure you also apply the product to your scalp to prevent sunburn.

To alleviate frizzy hair during humid days use a silicone-based serum that will flatten the hair cuticle and make hair smooth and shiny.

If you swim in chlorinated water or salt water wet your hair with tap water prior to swimming. Wet hair soaks up less water than dry hair. Always be sure to shampoo and condition your hair within a few hours after swimming. If neglected, chlorine and salt can build up on your hair. If this happens, use a clarifying shampoo for several days. Since this treatment strips the hair of its build up, it also can strip hair of moisture, so always be sure to condition your hair after clarifying.

With a minimal amount of effort you can have fun in the summer sun without the consequences of dry, damaged hair. And when the autumn air arrives, you will be grateful for your beautiful healthy locks.

urrounded by the laughter of little ones running through a sprinkler, and the drops of sunlight making rainbows in the mist, is the aroma of barbecue. Glowing charcoal embers under a metal rack can form the apex to a perfect summer day. Burgers, hotdogs, corn, and kabobs can tie together a gathering and sear the juicy happiness into the day. Whether in the backyard or at a summer festival, the grill has become the hallmark of the season.

Barbecue aficionado Robert Dempsey, president of Fay’s Pork Chop Bar-B-Que, knows a thing or two about grilling. Fay’s has been a family business for 53 years and takes it pretty seriously, producing 50, 100, 500 or 1,000 meals at a given event. Catering to charity fundraisers and the regulars at suburban festivals and fairs for decades, Fay’s is a committed charcoal enthusiast, the choice for the company’s famous pork chops since the business began.

“We have been grilling over charcoal for 53 years. I would not consider gas - except for

hamburgers or hot dogs. The flavor is just not the same.”

The difference is in the smoke produced by the charcoal and the length of time foods spend on the grill. Foods like hamburgers, hot dogs and chicken don’t spend as much time as steaks, pork chops and potatoes. As a result, people are hard pressed to decipher a flavor difference in hot dogs (for example) cooked on either a charcoal or gas grill. Foods that cook longer are granted the opportunity to absorb the smoke and really deliver a distinct flavor punch. It’s possible to get some smoke with a gas grill by utilizing soaked woodchips, but some people argue that the smoke production is negligible.

Regardless of the actual flavor difference between cooking on certain grills, many people simply prefer charcoal because its rustic roots help it feel more authentic.

Another common dilemma at the grill – to sauce, or not to sauce? Dempsey says he prefers a spice rub, and indeed the Fay’s flavor has become almost legendary across Illinois.

“We grill primarily pork chops and quarters of chicken - using only a powdered spice rub which we apply in batches of 35 in a tumbling drum to ‘massage’ it in. It then sits until we need it.”

If you, like most folks, don’t have the tumbling drum out on the patio, don’t despair. The average griller can get similar results by placing the meat on a cookie sheet, sprinkling on the spice, and then rubbing it in gently on both sides.

“Let it sit while you build the fire and get the grill hot – 15 to 20 minutes,” he says. “The salt in the spice will pull some moisture from the meat and now appear as a juicy paste on the surface. Place the meat on the grill at medium heat. Warm each side twice for 30 seconds to move the flavor into the meat. Now you are ready to grill.

Dempsey recommends turning the meat every 3 to 5 minutes so keep the whole piece moist and delicious.

Dempsey weighed in on grilling vegetables, “The only vegies we grill are as kabobs. I drill a small hole in carrots and potatoes if they keep splitting.”

Now that your main course is cooking, it’s time to get started on the sides, and nothing meets with meat like kabobs. A fun way to cook many bite-sized pieces of vegetables all at once, a kabob allows you to skewer nearly anything you want: pineapple, onion, bell peppers, tomatoes, mushrooms and squash are some examples. They can be marinated and grilled just like meats.

Off the kabob, potatoes and green beans can be wrapped in tin foil packets with butter and herbs and set on the grill beside the meat. The seasonings will saturate the veggies and it will be a delicious side to more traditional grilled foods,” he says.

SOMETIMES YOU JUST NEED A LITTLE NAPA One of my customers said that to me a long, long time ago and yes, sometimes you just need a little Napa.

Napa and Sonoma have become huge vacation destinations. Maybe not for a two-week stay, unless you’re part of the Rockefeller family, but for a week or a long weekend…perfect.

But “doing” the wine country and doing it right can be two very different things.

Do: Plan your trip well in advance especially if you’re planning on visiting the wine country during “crush.” Book everything as soon as you confirm your dates. Not just hotels. Book restaurants and winery visits too. If you’re considering a spa day or golf, book that as well.

If you’re going to hire a limo, book it. Believe me, a little advance work and your visit is going to be way more relaxing.

Don’t: Assume that once summer’s over it won’t be crowded. Spring and summer are busy in Napa/Sonoma. But the busiest time is the fall.

September and October are prime time in Napa/ Sonoma. Harvest (crush) starts in late August and continues through October. It’s the most interesting time to visit, but also the busiest – sort of the ‘best of times’ and the ‘worst of times.’

There’s lots to see, but lots of people seeing it and the industry people really don’t have much time to spend with anyone. (Even if their jobs are completely hospitality related, they’re still going to be juggling way too many visitors.) At that time of year, most winery people are intent on getting the grapes picked, sorted, crushed and into tanks.

February is a great time to visit, because the wineries aren’t busy, the restaurants aren’t full, and the hotels have vacancies. Tourist season is a few months off and the grape vines still are dormant. Wineries love visitors in February. You might even have a chance at getting a reservation at the French Laundry!

Do: Make appointments at specific wineries.

If you don’t have specific appointments set up, you’re just one of the crowd, and you may not get into your favorite winery. With an appointment, wineries usually spend more time with you, and may actually take you on a private tour (not always). They have the time and they appreciate the fact that you’re a fan, and made an effort to visit them specifically. Also, if you have an appointment, try to make it. Be on time if possible. (Believe me, it’s difficult to keep to a schedule in Napa/Sonoma.) If you’re running late or can’t make it, definitely call.

Don’t: Try to visit too many wineries in one day.

Do you want to keep your trip relaxing? Don’t book more than three visits each day. I’ve done it both ways. The forced march through Napa where we’ve visited seven or eight wineries each day, or the more leisurely tour through Napa where we schedule two visits in the morning, a nice relaxing lunch and one visit in the afternoon. Or you can flip that, one in the morning and two in the afternoon. The latter approach definitely is my preference.

Do: Map out your visits. Unless you’ve been to Napa/Sonoma before, you probably don’t have a good grasp of how far apart things can be. Without doing a bit of research you might schedule visits at wineries that are more than an hour apart. You really don’t want to spend your entire day driving. Really, you’re there to taste wines and relax.

There are lots of wineries.

Consider where you’re staying, what wineries you like, how much time you have. Then map it out. Also, keep in mind that there are only a few north/south arteries through Napa and Sonoma.

Traffic on weekends or during peak visiting times can be horrendous. You might have to add travel time to contend with that.

Do, and Don’t: Buy wine Opening up a bottle of wine that you purchased while on vacation is a lovely way to remember your trip. And, secondly, the wineries appreciate you buying their wine. After all, that’s why they’re in business and buying their wines is a way of thanking them for their hospitality. But don’t buy things you can purchase back home.

Look for wines that are limited items, wines which are only available directly from the winery. Something special. Every time you open one up you’ll remember your trip.

Summer fun, morning to night After spending most of this winter housebound, thanks to seemingly endless snowstorms, I have vowed to savor every free moment this summer. To me, there is no better way to enjoy the warmer weather than to find activities taking place in the great outdoors. Although it would be impossible to touch upon all the great events taking place along the train line this summer, here are a few to get you started.

FIRST STOP – Viva la Fiesta at the Brookfield Zoo (exit at the Hollywood stop and walk a few blocks to the South Gate, www.brookfieldzoo.org). As a Brookfield Zoo member, I enjoy trips to the zoo looking at the animals and attending the zoo’s seasonal events, like Viva la Fiesta. This multi-day celebration of Hispanic culture will take place Saturdays and Sundays, June 7-8 and 14-15, at the Zoo. Visitors can taste authentic Hispanic cuisine; enjoy live entertainment and dancing; and check out artwork on display.

Check the Brookfield Zoo’s website closer to the event for menu items and entertainment lineup. While you’re there, check out the zoo’s many other events taking place over the summer, like the Father’s Day BBQ on Sunday, June 15, and World Giraffe Day on Saturday, June 21.

SECOND STOP – Uniquely Thursdays in Hinsdale (north of tracks, Burlington Park, www. hinsdalechamber.com). After watching this event from the train window for many years, I definitely plan to hop off in Hinsdale some Thursday to partake in the Hinsdale Chamber of Commerce’s Uniquely

Thursdays. Every Thursday from June 12 through Aug. 14, Burlington Park (right by the Hinsdale train station) will be dotted with lawn chairs and blankets from 6 to 9 p.m. as the community gathers to enjoy concerts in the park.

The concert line up for June features Paparockzzi performing classic hits on June 12; Heartache Tonight, the Ultimate Eagles tribute band, on June 19; and Chicago Soul Review playing Motown soul on June 26. Note the week of the Fourth of July the concert will be moved to Wednesday, July 2, featuring Funhouse playing classic ‘70s rock.

LAST STOP – Summer Nights Classic Car Show in Downers Grove (south of tracks, www. downtowndg.org). I’ve spent many a Friday evening looking at vintage cars during the Summer Nights Classic Car Show, which kicked off May 16. Every Friday through Aug. 29 (no show on June 20 or July 4), an array of classic cars will line the streets in downtown Downers Grove from 6 to 9 p.m. Classic cars are welcome on Main Street from Maple to Franklin.

Each week a different featured vehicle (pre-1985) will be on Curtiss Street with a trophy awarded to the best car. Featured vehicles in June include Model “T” and “A” Ford Clubs Night on June 6; Air Cool Cars (i.e.

Corvair, Porsche, VW) on June 13; and Imports (i.e. British, German, Japanese) on June 27. In addition, live entertainment will take place from 7 to 9 p.m. at the Main Street train station.

On Thursday, hear A Summer Night on the Red Carpet where conductor Richard Kaufman leads the CSO in a program of excerpts from Academy Award-nominated films. On Friday, Tchaikovsky and Beethoven are performed with conductor Cristian Macelaru leading the CSO in a program that features masterworks from the familiar classical repertoire. On Saturday, Dvorák’s New World Symphony can be heard as conductor Cristian Macelaru leads the CSO in a program which begins with Brahms, and continues with violinist Elena Urioste. Dvorák’s famous Symphony No.9 completes the program. Bring your blankets and lawn chairs.
