SHERRI - What do you like most about life in Elmhurst? Mimi is a 17-year resident of the city, a staunch There are a few like her in every community.

MIMI - You know, I’m a transplant, originally from the East Coast, and in 1999, I was a newbie to the city, with two kids. It is quite a large community, while it has a small town feel. Here in Elmhurst, people recognize that the whole is greater than the sum of its parts. People get involved. They speak up and speak out. They are invested, and the results show in town.

-Continued from page 7 SHERRI - I read in your professional biography that you are psychologist by training. How did you get involved in voiceover work? MIMI - It’s thanks to my graduate student office location in Brandeis’ psychology department that I began my career in voice-overs. My office was directly adjacent to one occupied by students who were studying the effects of aging on memory. They were putting together audio tapes and needed someone to record long strings of words and phrases. After weeks of listening to the outgoing message on my answering machine in the office next door, someone got the idea I would be good for the job. Word of mouth took hold, and I was doing books for the blind, and then professional voiceovers. Soon I had an agent, and was recording books for the National Library Service and featuring in radio and television commercials. SHERRI - What do you like most about the job? MIMI - We pick up so much from a person’s voice. We know their mood, whether or not they are tired, upset, agitated, happy. So that plays into my work in psychology and even some acting. When I moved to Chicago it was such a huge opportunity with all the media located here. And I got to continue some of
my work in psychology --I worked with Imagination Theater and the Chicago Public Schools on an antibullying program, made presentations to educators and parents, and participated in the “Ease the Tease” program, a theatre-based initiative designed at curbing the teasing which often grows into bullying. In addition to that, the wide array of work, from corporate training to commercials to romance novels, keeps it interesting. Also, it has allowed me to stay an involved mom while my kids grow up here in Elmhurst. Advances in technology have allowed me to have a home studio where I do a lot of my voiceover work, sometimes in the wee hours of the night in my fuzzy bedroom slippers. I have been able to craft a career without giving up home life, which was really important to me. SHERRI - And now you get to be the voice of an Elmhurst tourism initiative, as the “tour director” aboard the Explore Elmhurst Trolley. How does that make you feel? MIMI - It really is something! I get to be an authentic cheerleader for this magnificent town! I hope out comes through in the final product.

A treasured family tradition unexpectedly became a thriving family business for the Davies family. Three years ago, Ashley and Todd Davies opened their first Nothing Bundt Cakes franchise. And to date, have locations here in Elmhurst, in Wheaton and in LaGrange. The venture, reports Ashley, “has been awesome. I love it!” For many years, Ashley had been a stay-at-home mom to their four children, now ages 11-20; Todd has been a “restaurant guy his whole life,” Ashley says. The former president of Nothing Bundt Cakes was a friend of Todd’s for more than 25 years. “My husband was looking for something new. His buddy sold him on the idea.” It wasn’t a tough sell. “We’d been baking Bundt cakes for the first day of school since my oldest daughter started kindergarten,” Asley says. “When my kids were growing up and anything special was happening, that’s how we’d celebrate. My mom used to bake Bundt cakes too. So, Bundt cakes are near and dear to our hearts and have had a special feeling for us,” Ashley says.
Nothing Bundt Cakes was founded in Las Vegas in 1997. Today, there are more than 170 franchises around the country in a business that Ashley says is “growing very quickly.” With mouthwatering flavors like red velvet, chocolate chocolate chip, white chocolate raspberry and more, the confectionary creations certainly take center stage at Nothing Bundt Cakes. However the business is way more than simply a bakery to Ashley. “I love developing relationships with people in the community. Guests come in and pour their hearts out and I’ve developed great friendships that I otherwise wouldn’t have had the chance to pursue,” she says. “I love being able to help every guest celebrate anything from a simple pick-me-up to a huge event like baby showers or weddings. It’s absolutely more than a bakery. I didn’t anticipate that but love it and am so glad that it’s a piece of the puzzle.”
Another valued piece of the puzzle is the family aspect. Working with her husband has been “awesome,” Ashley says. “We have additional strengths and weaknesses. All of the other employees, totaling 20-25 at each shop, are “an extension of our family,” says Ashley. “Our relationships with them are really vital.” As Nothing Bundt Cakes continues to flourish, Ashley says its popularity may be inspired, but only briefly, by the cupcake trend. “There are definitely people who come into our stores because of the cupcake craze, but once they try our cakes, there’s no going back to cupcakes,” says Ashley.

AMBASSADOR OF THE ARTS Roz Long builds business promoting area artisans By MELISSA RUBALCABA RISKE
From the time she was a child, Roz Long remembers art being a central part of her family’s life. Her father and extended family shared a passion for the arts, from paintings to the ballet. But it wasn’t until she was well into her adulthood that she rediscovered her love of the arts and her passion for assisting artists to showcase their work. “I love helping artists make a living selling their work,” Long says. “I love giving artists a voice.” Long created her business RGL Marketing for the Arts, Inc. more than 20 years ago, using it to promote art shows and festivals. The Elmhurst resident is a part of the creative planning that organizes the annual Art in the Park in Wilder Park each May, the annual Girls Nite Out at Wilder Mansion in September, and the annual Holiday Market in Elmhurst’s Wilder Mansion in November. Art in the Park started as an art festival in downtown Elmhurst for the first two years before Long reached out to the Elmhurst Park District and formed a partnership, thus creating Art in the Park, which just marked its 20th year. “There has been such a great partnership with the Elmhurst Park District,” Long says. “I love how they support the arts.” She also enjoys the ability to bring art programs to Elmhurst, her home for the last 38 years. “I love engaging our town with the arts,” she says. Long grew up in Skokie and remembers her family home filled with the arts. Her father, Mandel Ganz, emigrated from Lithuania in 1939, joining cousins who had come and settled in the area before him.

“He was so avid about the arts,” she says. Long says she too developed a love for the arts and enjoyed spending time with relatives who dabbled in sculpting, jewelry making and other avenues. When she sought her own career path, Long entered the field of education, working with special education students and as a high school and college counselor for 25 years. She spent a year working on the marketing for the Elmhurst City Centre before launching her own business, making her focus on the marketing of the arts a full-time business. Each art festival and event requires managing multiple pieces, from the participating artists and vendors to site set up and publicity. “It’s like working on a puzzle,” Long says. Still, she remembers a time when she dreamed she could work in the arts and says she is happy to have made that dream come to life. “I love engaging my community and anyone who comes to the community to view and buy art,” Long says. Longtime friend and Elmhurst Park District Commissioner Carolyn Ubriaco says Long’s work builds community among the artists and the residents. “Roz is a tireless advocate for artists,” Ubriaco says. Long found ways to take her marketing and organizational skills and help make a difference for others, through her support for the Emergency Clothes Closet ministry of Calvary Memorial Church in Oak Park. Through her hard work the program went from relying on support and donations from its members to accepting donations from national retailers like R.E.I. to provide warm outerwear for the homeless.

“I figured I could use my marketing skills and really reach out to these big retailers,” Long says. “There are so many people who have nothing.” Long says the work was challenging and rewarding. While she has moved on from the project and the church, she hopes to find similar work at a new church she has recently joined. “The common denominator in all of Roz’s projects is that she really cares about the people involved,” Ubriaco says. “The real reason Roz is so successful is that she is a kind and genuine person.”

verybody is affected by fashion in one way or another. Whether it is the clothing we wear, the furniture we buy or even the house in which we live, fashion plays a part in our decision making. What happens when a wine becomes fashionable?
all the sugar was consumed. The winemaker liked the results so much that he decided to start producing the new style, and the white zinfandel most of us remember, was born.
Recent data out of California has indicated that rosé wine is the fastest growing segment of wine consumption in the United States, and trails only France as a consumer of this style.
(Not coincidentally, the death of rosé soon followed.) The popularity of white zinfandel long has faded but that perception of rosé wines has not, until now.
¢ A few things you should know about rosé wine:
Rosé is widely considered the oldest style of wine, and Provence, France the birthplace of modern winemaking techniques. Rosé wines were enjoyed by the wealthy and royalty alike. Rosé wine is made all over the world but to this day, Provence is the epicenter of rosé, and its wines are the model by which all other rosés are compared.
Rosés are a bright, fresh wine with good acidity. . .and most importantly. . .dry! There is a lot to like when it comes to today’s rosé wines. Due to rosé’s white wine-like acidity, they are wonderful to pair with summer foods like salads, crab, grilled chicken, fish, fried fish, lobster, and fruit. Because of the rosé fruity characteristics, similar to lighter reds, rosés pair well with pizza, hamburger, and grilled sausages. And who doesn’t love BBQ in the summer? Can you guess what wine goes great with BBQ? You guessed it, rosé.
For rosé, it’s been a long road back to respectability. And the biggest hurdle to overcome, has been the public’s perception. In the 1970s Bob Trinchero, a wine maker at Sutter Home, in order to concentrate the flavors in his zinfandel, would bleed off some of the grape juice to increase skin contact with the remaining zinfandel juice. The bled juice then was turned into a dry, almost white wine, bottled and sold. By chance on one batch, the yeast died off before

Americans dine out more than ever, and a great server can certainly guide a guest toward a wine selection that they would not normally make on their own. In addition to the influence of wine experts, rosé wine has found its way into all sorts of media, print ads, newspapers, television and film. All these mediums can have a profound effect on the public conscience.

Muddle 5 Raspberries with Simple Syrup in a mixing tin. Add Vodka, Rosé Wine, and Lemon Juice to mixing tin. Add Ice cubes and shake for 10 sec. Fill a collins glass with ice cubes and strain cocktail through a mesh strainer. Top with Soda Water and garnish with 3 Raspberries.

Depression, anxiety in new moms common and treatable Dr. Fatima Ali, Linden Oaks Behavioral Health and DuPage Mental Health Services
A
t some point between becoming pregnant and her baby’s first birthday, almost one in five women will struggle with significant anxiety or depression. This class of conditions, called perinatal mood or anxiety disorders (PMAD), is the most frequent complication of childbirth. To some degree, weepiness and anxiety will visit as many as 80 percent of women during pregnancy and new motherhood, thanks to hormonal changes and sleep deprivation, among other factors. But it’s time to get help if these feelings last more than two weeks or are so strong it’s difficult to function. Many factors can put a woman at risk for PMAD, such as previous loss of a baby, unplanned pregnancy, diabetes, marital problems, history of mood and anxiety disorders, or a traumatic childbirth. PMAD can happen to any woman who’s pregnant or just had a baby, but for many, it’s their first pregnancy and they have no risk factors or history of mental health conditions. COMMON PMAD SYMPTOMS INCLUDE: • Crying most of the time • Sadness in spite of wanting to be happy • Excessive irritability • Excessive worry, even panic attacks • Trouble concentrating or remembering • Intrusive thoughts, such as repeated, upsetting thoughts regarding the baby

• Appetite problems • Inability to sleep and rest even when the child is sleeping

Hospitals, obstetricians and pediatricians incorporate anxiety and depression screening, which is required by Illinois state law, into the care of their OB patients. This can result in early detection and faster, more effective treatment.
Edward Hospital, Elmhurst Hospital and Linden Oaks Behavioral Health offer a Mom’s Line, (630) 527-7294, dedicated to women, or anyone concerned about a woman, who may be experiencing signs or symptoms of postpartum depression or anxiety. Messages on the line are checked daily and calls are returned within 24 hours.
In a typical PMAD program, patients are screened for anxiety and depression before and shortly after the birth of their baby(ies) and new moms receive a follow-up screening call at home from a nurse in the week after they leave the hospital. Women who are determined to be at risk are offered an assessment by a mental health professional. Support groups and a hot line are also available. THERE ARE THINGS NEW MOMS CAN TO DO HELP EASE PMAD: • Allow yourself time to adjust to your new life. • Ask for help with daily activities. • Keep visits short with friends and family if you’re feeling overwhelmed. • Get as much rest as possible. • Get out of the house whenever you have a chance. • Get together with other new moms. • Spend some time alone. • Make time for moderate aerobic exercise, like walking. Artist SHOWCASE KAREN EXINER | Elmhurst “Lunch in Provence” Acrylic When I was four years old I remember making a sketch of our kitchen using pencil on butcher paper. My mother saved the sketch and years later I found it with her papers after she passed away. Teaching art classes at the Elmhurst Public Library brings me great joy! It’s a pleasure to nurture budding artists. Its a privilege to sketch beloved houses, pets and children for my clients . It’s an honor when people hire me to produce a painting from a favorite photograph to hang in their homes or offices. Art has afforded me many wonderful opportunities such as to share my love of art with children from Elmhurst, South American and Europe. One of my fondest memories was serving on the original foundation board for The Elmhurst Art Museum at the pleasure of founder Evelyn Hookham for ten years. My dream of creating an art installation came true last fall along with the Elmhurst Artists’ Guild’s then President Heather Jones-Pryor, Elmhurst Garden Club, Then President Georgia Dolan, Pottery Artist Teri Litavsky and Megan Wright of Microsoft. The exhibit was installed in the Elmhurst Artists’Guild Gallery in the Elmhurst Art Museum.The “Fall Magic”Exhibit was completely underwritten by Microsoft of OakBrook.

FESTIVAL AND FAIR TIME! I love summer time because it brings with it many wonderful festivals and fairs that focus on the Arts. In particular, I enjoy walking through the many fine arts fairs throughout the western suburbs to gather creative ideas and purchase new art for my home. Whenever I see a painting that catches my attention, I take a step back and consider several things before making the purchase. The right piece of art will enhance the “personality” of a room and plays an important role in communicating the overall style of my home. Lynn Day is owner and events manager of the wine & art party studio, Bottle & Bottega located in Glen Ellyn. She has over 20 years of experience in event planning both as a not-for-profit volunteer and professionally.
I first look for the composition of the painting to ensure that it will go with the décor of my home. Currently I am in the process of changing things up to create an Urban Farmhouse Chic look, so at this point I like the more rustic and less formal style. I will be mixing this new style with the more formal and impressionistic original paintings that already grace my home’s walls. With that said, the colors used by the artist to create their masterpiece are also key as I like to create harmony. Texture also plays an important role for me as I find textured paintings capture another dimension and add interest to a piece.

Lastly, and I think most importantly, the painting has to personally bring me pleasure when I gaze upon it. Whenever possible, I try to attend as many festivals and fairs for fine arts as time allows. For the second year in a row, EAM is organizing the exhibition New American Paintings: Midwest Edition. Based on the acclaimed juried publication, an exhibition-in-print, this year’s version was selected by Kelly Schindler, associate curator at the St. Louis Contemporary Art Museum, and features an equally diverse group of artists and practices from across the Midwest. The thirty-nine artists participating in this year’s NAP broadly span the spectrum of varying themes in contemporary painting, including figural representation, material studies, optical abstraction and spatial depictions, while continually redefining the limits of formal categorization.

Enjoy music by local musicians, art activities, comedy, poetry, food and more at the fourth annual music festival held in and around the museum.
