Time bandit I

t’s bright and early on a crisp weekday morning in Glen Ellyn, and Tammy Lifka is lacing up her running shoes. Layered in insulating fabrics to wick away the cold, she heads out for what has become her own personal ritual. She runs to drive her passion. She runs to feel strong. She runs, because she can.

Lifka is a marathoner. In the last year she has run in races on two continents, taking in the Osaka Marathon in Japan in October. That opportunity was the result of her outstanding finish at the 2012 Chicago Marathon, where she was the second woman from Illinois to cross the finish line, 21st overall.

She placed second at Napa Valley in 2012. Won the Kiawah Island Marathon in South Carolina a year ago. Competed in half-marathons and 10Ks

all across the country. But just a half-dozen years ago, she didn’t run at all.

Lifka grew up playing tennis. Off the court in high school and college, she’d participate in track to stay active, but never really focused on the competition.

But this is where the commonplace ends in Lifka’s story, and the passion begins.

“I showed up,” she says. “But that’s about it.”

Three kids and more than a decade later and Lifka was looking for another outlet for her energy.

“I couldn’t go out and play tennis with three little ones, and I was burned out, anyhow. I needed something different.”

So she did what lots of women do after having kids: she got a jogger stroller and headed out the door. She bought a treadmill. She got herself

“The kids liked it,” she says.

Running just a few miles in a stretch, at a nine minute pace, a friend invited her to take part in a 20-miler in Staughton, Wisconsin.

“I thought she was crazy,” Lifka recalls. “Twenty miles? I had only run about four at a time before that. But she said it would be fun that we could run-walk it, and enjoy ourselves along the way.”

So Lifka ran, and when taking breaks to walk and chat seemed more trouble than it was worth, Lifka kept running. She finished that 20 mile race and surprised even herself.

Marathon runner Tammy Lifka has dropped minutes race to race, recording a personal best at nearly every event in which she competes. “I don’t think I’ve peaked yet,” she says.

“I started thinking, if I could run 20 miles, could I run 26? That’s when the idea of a marathon seemed like a reality,” she says. The 2007 Chicago Marathon loomed on the horizon.

she laughs.

She did a Chicago half marathon. She cross trained and went to spin classes, but says she had no plan, no regimen.

“It was my first marathon, I didn’t know what to expect, or how to feel,” she says. “It was hot, sure, but I finished before they called the race. I thought, if I can finish this strong in my first, and it’s this hot…maybe there’s something to this running thing.”

“I didn’t know how to train, I had never tracked my miles,” she says. “I just went out and ran.”

Three weeks before the 2007 Chicago Marathon she joined the Glen Ellyn Runners Club. She was pacing at under four hours and her fellow runners said she should try to qualify for the elite Boston Marathon. Entry required a 3:45 finish time.

“They said ‘Try for Boston’ and I was like, ‘What’s Boston?’ I had no concept of what that meant,”

But try she did, and on the hottest Chicago marathon day of recent record, Lifka posted a 3:43, getting her coveted Boston spot at the line.

She’d capture a 3:20 in Boston in 2008.

After that, the races came, and the minutes fell. 3:16 in Boston 2009. A 3:03 that autumn in Chicago. Napa Valley 2011 at 2:56:33. A 2012 win at Kiawah Island at 2:50.

By the 2013 Boston Marathon, she’d hit 2:48.30.

And with that personal record comes another goal – the Olympic Trials. Opened in August, runners have two years to compete in qualifying races for the opportunity. Anyone under 2:43 gets in.

Injuries make it a long shot. Lifka is battling shin splints right now, and repair has taken precedence, but she’s battling back, and has faith she’ll make it.

“It’s a vicious cycle. You get injured, you feel better, you keep training,” she says. “But you have to take a step back and focus. You can’t add both strength and marathon training at the same time. My body will tell me when I am ready.”

So she trains. She eats a gluten-free diet because it makes her feel better. She checks her blood to see what nutrients she lacks.

“I think of my body like a car,” she says, "and I really think it takes all those components.

Anyone can do it. I truly believe that. But it takes attention to all of it. It takes commitment.”

Today, that commitment transcends from track to career, as Lifka embarks on a new focus, and a return to college to study physical therapy. The commitment she’s developed as a runner, the personal satisfaction she gets as a running coach at Lifetime Fitness in Bloomingdale and her passion for health and fitness drive her return to

Lifka says a commitment to all aspects of health – the training, the nutrition, the mental focus – is needed for success. “I look at my body like a car,” she says

the classroom. She’s just as sure of her success there.

“I’ve always felt pretty average,” she says. “I was average at tennis. It was fun but I didn’t see the successes. And had I started running earlier, I don’t think I’d be at this level. I would have burned out, gotten hurt.

“But I am more focused now that I ever have been in my life. I honestly don’t think I have peaked yet,” she says smiling. “It’s really motivating.”

Tammy Lifka lives in Glen Ellyn with her husband and three children. She’s studying physical therapy at College of DuPage and watches nervously from the sidelines as her oldest daughter competes on the cross country team.

Young athletes score scholarships, support through local tennis academy

ith more people than ever embracing fitness, new videos, workouts, and other various up-and-coming methods have emerged to get women in tip-top shape. Despite all of the new workouts coming out, there is one technique that is taking it back to the basics— barre.

When most people think of barre, they think of teeny tiny ballerinas reaching for the sky in toe shoes and tights. And while today’s barre fitness classes have roots in dance and they use the barre for the workout, they also make use of Pilates techniques for core conditioning.

What Barre Is The German-born dancer Lotte Berk is credited with creating the basic bar method, or Lotte Berk Method, in the 1950s. Since then, it has morphed into various different techniques, including licensed methods like Pure Barre, Booty Barre, The Dailey Method and Xtend Barre.

wanted to incorporate barre exercises from Lotte Birk as well as the core Pilates principles from their own backgrounds. The result was DemiBarre, their very own take on the popular barre phenomenon.

“We use a lot of different props, including short body bars, weighted bars, and Pilates magic circles, all of which are on the light side,” Grace says. “We also do arms, a planking session, push-ups, and other slowly controlled moves. We try to stretch as much as we can, as the typical barre work is small isometric movements, which are just crazy burners.”

Although it may sound intimidating at first, no prior dance experience is needed for barre classes.

Why It’s Popular One of the reasons barre has risen in popularity with women in particular is that it addresses the areas of the boy with which women typically take issue.

“During each Pure Barre class, clients utilize their own body weight to work imperative muscles to fatigue and then stretch them back out while warm and malleable, which creates long, lean and strong physiques,” Molly Cashman, director of marketing for Pure Barre says.

“In just 55 minutes you will achieve a full-body workout concentrating on the areas that women struggle with the most: hips, thighs, seat, abdominals and arms,” Cashman says. “Each strength section of the workout is followed by a stretching section in order to create long, lean muscles without bulk.”

“What keeps clients coming back to Pure Barre is the fact that it truly works,” Cashman says. “The technique changes women’s bodies quickly and safely.”

Essentially, women regularly participating in barre classes are obtaining a dancer’s body without ever sliding into ballet slippers.

“It’s so fun and we get to see so many people transform their bodies,” Grace says. “Although 3/4 of the people here are here to look good, it’s also great for keeping their bodies and their spines healthy.”

“Pure Barre was designed to work for women of all shapes, sizes and fitness levels,” Cashman says. “as long as you can hold onto the ballet barre, you can do it.”

Barre often is considered to be a sibling of Pilates, with a focus on body control and small, isometric movements. Yet all of the various barre methods, as indicated by the name, utilize the ballet barre in one way or another.

Sheila Grace, co-owner of FIXE Studio in Hinsdale with partner Jenifer Zeno, liked the concept of barre, but wanted to put their own spin on it. Both had heavy backgrounds in Pilates, and

the Pilates foundation is the core work during classes, which focuses on improving back, hip and shoulder alignment.

Barre workouts often utilize small rubber balls to focus on tightening the body and eliminating cellulite. A similar element that draws from

Here are a few tips for starting your year off with a healthier back and neck.

• Stay active: Continue your normal exercise routine or ease into it if you have taken a break.

• During gatherings and parties take a break from the table to chat or walk around.

• Eat smaller portions and take longer breaks between meals.

• Be careful on the ice and snow: shovel with care and remember to lift with your legs and core, not your back!

• Ask for help if that toy is just too high or the gift is just a bit too heavy.

• Spread out your workload so you are not over extended. It is a time for family to be together, right?

If you do get injured then here are some tips for getting yourself back on your feet.

nce the last of the holiday treasures has been opened, you may find you are feeling more than the Christmas spirit. It is all too easy to overdo things during the holidays – from carrying those heavy packages filled with joy, the baking of sheet after sheet of luscious cookies, the 20 pound Christmas turkey, and of course the snow can lead to the pressure, the intake of so much tasty food that you cannot simply pass by and the result can often be some aches and pains.

• Allow yourself a little rest but not too much. A couple of days limiting your activity should suffice to let the spasms subside.

• Anti-inflammatory medication and ice to your back or neck could be helpful too.

• Stretching those tight muscles to help them relax will not just make you more limber, but can also calm the pain.

Fitness can be fun…

FOR EVERYONE It’s never too early to initiate a healthy lifestyle

ust as many adults commit to fitness in January, it’s a great time for kids to do the same. Childhood obesity has more than doubled in children and tripled in adolescents in the past 30 years, and according to the Centers for Disease Control, more than one third of children and adolescents were overweight or obese in 2010.

But there are services available to address healthy adolescent weight, just like there are for adults. For kids eight to 14, whose body mass index is in 85th percentile and above, ProActive Kids offers a safe place to improve health and confidence.

“Everything we do is designed to encourage and empower, so when they’re running and playing with their classmates, they feel confident,” Nicki Klinkhamer, executive director of the four-yearold, hospital-funded program.

The free eight-week program focuses on fitness, nutrition and lifestyle. The fitness component includes structured exercise under the guidance of a personal trainer. Nutrition education focuses on healthy diets, and portion control. Lifestyle classes address body image, self-esteem, communication, stress management and more.

“A lot of these kids have experienced bullying, some are going through difficult times and are using food for comfort. There are so many 18 | JANUARY 2014 | SUBURBAN LIFE MAGAZINE

things that contribute to weight issues,” says Klinkhamer.

Parents are crucial in helping kids establish healthy habits. “The parents are the key component in their child’s health, since they’re the ones buying the food and cooking the meals,” Klinkhamer says.

Participants set measurable goals for during the program, and after. And kids aren’t the only ones making changes. “One of the dads told me he’d lost forty pounds. But even little changes, like being more active, swapping whole milk for skim, can make a difference,” she says.

DuPage County sponsoring partners are Good Samaritan Hospital in Downers Grove and Edward Hospital in Woodridge. The next session begins January 13 and enrollment is ongoing. For more information, visit www.proactivekids.org Developing fitness skills that last a lifetime is one of the goals of the PPL Youth Triathlon Team, sponsored by Peterson Performance Lab in Western Springs.

The team is open to kids age seven to 19, and no previous experience is required.

“I started triathlon at 37, so it’s never too late.

Anyone who is interested qualifies. With the kids, the focus is more on building skills and having fun,” says coach Jessica Niekrasz.

Triathlon competitions include running, swimming and bicycling. Running skills are taught through game play and emphasize injury prevention. Bike handling skills include turns, mounting, dismounting and bike safety.

Helmets are required. “Once without a helmet is a warning, twice and they’re off the team,” Niekrasz says.

Because of the difficulty in obtaining pool time, team members are asked to participate in a swim team. “We ask that they work on those skills outside of our program, but we do try to take them to open water in the summer, as schedules permit,” she says.

Participants set personal goals at the beginning of the season and strive to improve. Last year, the team competed in five races. “It’s an individual event, but we go as a team, put up a tent and once the kids have finished, they stay to cheer on their friends,” she says.

Regardless of their competitive level, kids benefit from the camaraderie while developing lifelong skills. “Triathlon is a sport they can stay with all their life, and even if they don’t, they’ll still find satisfaction with swimming, biking or running,” Niekrasz says.

It’s that fickle time of year again.

Yet another January arrives and we realize that we dropped the ball on last year’s resolutions to de-stress, lose a few pounds or live a healthier lifestyle.

Area experts offered to help with a few suggestions to make and keep those New Year’s resolutions for 2014.

“The New Year is a time for new beginnings and to set goals that strengthen one’s spirit, mind and body,” says Dee Dee McDevitt, vice president of membership and marketing for the B.R. Ryall YMCA of Northwestern DuPage County, in Glen Ellyn.

Experts at the Y stress that maintaining family connectedness is a top priority in living a healthier lifestyle.

“At the Y, we are committed to strengthening individuals and families to build stronger communities,” said Lynda Chott, chief executive officer at the B.R. Ryall YMCA. “When making New Year’s Resolutions, we encourage people to begin with small changes that are easy to sustain and that lead to big benefits over time. Also, set goals as a family to learn and thrive together.”

u EAT TOGETHER: Sitting down together for a meal is a great way for parents and children to share stories, or talk about the school day or their favorite part of the day. Set aside time for the family to eat breakfast, lunch or dinner at least once a week or every day if scheduling permits. u VOLUNTEER AS A FAMILY: Giving back and supporting your community benefits everyone involved and teaches children and teens the value of helping others. Community opportunities that the entire family could enjoy together include cleaning the neighborhood park or distributing food at a local food bank. u UNPLUG FROM TECHNOLOGY: Limit screen time such as watching television, playing video games, or tapping on the computer. Set aside an hour or two for activities involving interaction and camaraderie. When the weather is nice go biking together, take walks around the neighborhood or to the park, or have game night or watch a movie together at home. u BE PHYSICALLY ACTIVE: Children should get at least 60 minutes of physical activity each day, and adults at least 30. Get your required minutes in by incorporating physical activity into daily routines and spending more time walking to places instead of driving.

They key, says Amy Goebbert, physical therapist at TheraCORE, is to keep goals reasonable.

“Make small, realistic goals,” says Goebbert.

For example, Goebbert recommends setting a weekly goal of exercising twice a week as opposed to saying “I’m going to drop 50 pounds.”

Goebbert also suggests: u KEEP TRACK: Keep a journal for workouts and/or eating. If you know you have to record it somewhere, you are more likely to do it. u WEAR A PEDOMETER: Try to walk 10,000 steps each day. To do this, use the stairs instead of the elevator or an escalator, park at the end of the parking lot in order to get more steps in, or if at work, walk to the farther bathroom at the office. Goebbert also says to take breaks from your computer every 30 minutes to stand, stretch or take a short walk. u REWARD YOURSELF: After a month of sticking to your goals, reward yourself with a new pair of shoes or a massage. u GET A TRAINER: Working out with a personal trainer or friend who will hold you accountable.

TheraCORE registered dietician Jenna Wardle suggests planning and preparing lunches and snacks the night before work or school. Being prepared the night before will keep you from eating out, and eating badly, for lunch, she says. u BE REALISTIC: Because saying you will never eat out is so unrealistic, give yourself permission to eat out -- just once or twice a week. u PLAN AHEAD: And when you know you are eating out, search the restaurant’s menu on-line beforehand. Planning out what to order before you get to the restaurant will help you make healthier choices, says Wardle.

Winfield’s Ronald McDonald House will offer worried parents respite within steps of their children’s care

By ELIZABETH HARMON From the front door of the new Ronald McDonald House on Winfield Road to the children’s wing at Central DuPage Hospital there are 371 steps.

For a worried parent of a sick child, that locale means a lot.

“If parents can’t sleep at 2 a.m. because they’re concerned about their baby, they can literally walk across the street and hold their hand,” says Chris Hensley, president of Cadence Health Foundation.

Opening of the $6.225 million facility is set at more than a year away, but excitement for a project with such demonstrated need already is evident.

Children’s Hospital of Chicago, and the opening of its Warrenville proton beam treatment center—one of only 11 in the United States—means that this hospital campus has become a medical destination, drawing patients from outside the area and even outside the country.

“Last year, we had a family who chose proton beam therapy for their child. They found us, took sabbaticals from their jobs, pulled their children out of school and traveled 15,000 miles from Australia. They were here six weeks and lived in a hotel the whole time,” Hensley says. “A Ronald McDonald House would have been perfect in that situation.”

Indiana, says Cadence sought her organization’s help in meeting the growing need for temporary housing. “Because of our expertise in this area, they said they’d like to partner with us. We were delighted to look at the need, and decide to move forward.”

The facility will offer 12 family-size bedrooms, including four designed for the extended stays needed for outpatient proton beam therapy. Each bedroom will accommodate up to five people. On the main floor are a dining room and kitchen, where volunteers provide a meal each day, or where families can prepare their own. There’s also a living room, library nook, toddler play area, video game and TV room, family room, and community room.

“Being with other families in a similar situation will provide a better holistic experience,” Hensley says.

The house also will include an exercise room, the only Ronald McDonald House to include one so far. “It’s important for parents to be able to have that routine, and to be able to relieve stress through physical activity,” Laguatan says.

Its proximity to Central DuPage Hospital also makes the house special.

“It’s our goal to have them as close as possible, but that depends on the availability of sites, which can be hard to come by in hospital districts. We’re very blessed to find a site that’s so close,” Laguatan says.

The house will serve Central DuPage Hospital, Delnor Hospital and the Warrenville cancer campus. Laguatan expects it to be at capacity most of the time.

Groundbreaking is scheduled for March 18, 2014 and construction is expected to take about 11 months. Fundraising currently is underway. The Cadence Health Auxiliary has committed to raise $5 million for construction and another $1 million to run the house for the first three to four years.

“We’re past the halfway mark but still encouraging the community to invest in this,” Hensley says.

Make a resolution to better your dental hygiene,

ONE STEP AT A TIME 2013 has come to an end and we find ourselves at the beginning of an exciting new year! The common cliché is the “New Year’s Resolution,” where people decide to make a significant change in their lives. Unfortunately, for most people, making big changes in your lifestyle can be very difficult to start and even harder to keep.

Whenever I recommend changes in a patient’s habits, I always recommend small, gradual changes that are made with consistency. These are far more effective than drastic changes implemented for a month or two. We’ve all known someone who engages in a fad diet, only to put the weight right back on a few weeks after they’ve finished. So what changes can you make to your dental health, which are simple, and easy to maintain?

DIET The most effective anti-cavity treatment, believe it or not, is controlling your diet. Cutting sweet and acidic drinks like pop and juice will go a very long way towards preventing cavities. Everyone knows pop is bad for you, from the standpoint of calories as well as sugar and acidity. But often, people substitute other drinks, which they think are better for them. The most common is natural fruit juices. I will concede that natural sugar is better than artificial sugar, but in the end it’s still sugar, and that means it is food for bacteria.

Not to mention most fruit juices are very acidic, as well. The acid in both pop and juice weakens

your enamel and the sugar feeds the bacteria already in your mouth to start multiplying and producing more acid! The end result is a hole in your tooth, commonly known as a cavity. Simply drinking more water throughout the day and saving pop and juice for special occasions, or as an uncommon treat, will not only help your teeth, it can take inches off your waistline.

ORAL HYGIENE After a good cleaning patients will often get motivated and tell me, “Doc, I’m gonna start brushing and flossing three times a day!” To which I typically smile and reply, “I doubt it.”

Very few people consistently brush and floss three times a day. We all have very busy lives, we have a lot on our plates and adding a tedious hygiene ritual is not going to help if we can’t stick to it. This is why we customize our hygiene recommendations for patients. If you’re already flossing once a day before bed, fantastic! You’re ahead of the curve, now slowly start adding in a second flossing in the morning. If you don’t floss at all, start slow. Floss a couple times a week. Once you’re consistent with that, move up to three times a week, then four, then five.

Pretty soon you’ll be flossing everyday, and it will become a part of your regular regimen.

GET ORGANIZED

schedule. Set up your six month checkups in advance. When someone is leaving our office after a cleaning we always to try to get the next cleaning set. The most common response is, “I’ll check my schedule and give you a call, I don’t know what day I’ll be free in six months!” But this is the wrong attitude. When you leave the office you have other commitments that take up your time and energy. Suddenly that dental visit you were motivated to make has fallen off your radar. By scheduling in advance you are making your dental appointment a priority. You wouldn’t skip changing the oil on your car, because you know that without regular maintenance, your car will no longer be reliable. Your body and teeth are no different. They require regular scheduled “maintenance” to avoid costly “repairs” later!

FINALLY, don’t forget, it’s a new insurance year. You have fresh benefits to use so don’t let another year pass by without maximizing your insurance. Make 2014 the year you finally make yourself a priority.

LOSE I always have been what you might call an exercise addict. I even went so far as to make exercise my job, and in the process learned more about my own insecurities by helping others deal with theirs.

Growing up with two older brothers meant a great deal of teasing and tormenting. While I never was a chubby kid, as I got older I quickly realized that I couldn’t eat foot-long subs and entire boxes of mac ‘n cheese like my brothers.

If I did, my siblings were right there to point out exactly where my healthy appetite “ended up.” Neither was I blessed with the same genes as my grandmother, who could eat pastries for breakfast, lunch and dinner and never break 100 pounds.

I always have had to work hard to eat right and stay in shape. Sometimes I worked harder than others. Sometimes I thought I was eating right, but ended up doing more harm than good. I struggled with fad diets and extreme exercise routines. I pushed myself to workout through injuries and illness. I would stress out if I missed a day at the gym or beat myself up if I overindulged. I was a slave to how many calories I burned, the number on the scale and the size of my jeans.

Eventually, I found the right combination and balance of reasonable, but effective workouts, eating right without depriving myself and a love for my body, despite its flaws. I made this my life, not a temporary fix.

Don’t get me wrong, I still am at the gym or doing some sort of exercise more than the average person, but I feel healthier emotionally, not just physically, about my exercise and diet regimen.

In the last year-and-a-half, my husband made the conscious decision to change his lifestyle, and in the end lost almost 70 pounds. Most people assume I was the one who pushed him to adopt a new way of eating and exercise routine. In reality, he was the one who finally said, “Enough is enough,” and decided to change his ways.

He struggled a great deal for the first several months, even though he was seeing significant results.

He agonized over his workouts, portions, milligrams of sodium, whether something had cheese sprinkled on it and even told me once that bread was evil. Moderation is not his strong suit. He is an “all or nothing” kind of guy, so cheating was not an option for him.

He pushed himself to the point of injury in his workouts and would get downright angry and depressed if he had to take a break. He weighed himself twice a week and fretted over even a pound of weight gain over a weekend.

It was then that I realized that what I wished for him. It was to gain what I had over the years; the ability to cut myself some slack. I rarely weigh myself. I gave up obsessing over what my heart rate monitor said at the end of a workout.

Instead of working to burn what I ate, I learned to eat to fuel my workouts. I gave my body rest when it was needed and realized that as long as I woke up every morning, alive and healthy, that was most important.

As a group fitness instructor and athlete, I see a lot of intense and competitive people. I have that spirit too, and I can relate. In fact, there are times I feel like I am looking in the mirror. That mirror has given me the ability to look long and hard at what I see and what I really want to achieve.

I love to exercise. I love looking and feeling good.

I love being healthy. It makes me happy. Beating myself up, getting depressed or stressed out defeats the purpose of leading a healthy lifestyle.

Whenever I find those feelings creeping up on me, I know it is time to take a step back and reevaluate my goals.

By ELIZABETH HARMON For couples struggling to start or expand their family, seeking fertility treatment can be a lifechanging decision. When is the right time to seek a specialist, and what treatment is best?

Dr. Amos Madanes, director of the Midwest Fertility Center in Downers Grove, has been helping couples overcome infertility problems since 1979. Certified as an reproductive endocrinologist by the American Board of Obstetrics and Gynecology, Madanes received his medical degree from Tel Aviv University in Israel, specialty training in obstetrics and gynecology at Boston’s Tufts University, followed by two years of advanced training in reproductive endocrinology, including a fellowship, at Harvard University School of Medicine.

Q: Do all centers offer the same treatments?

A: Most reproductive endocrinology centers offer the same treatments. Some of the most common treatments are IVF, surgical correction of fertility problems, induction of ovulation with interuterine insemination, but again, be sure that the doctors at the center are board certified in Reproductive Endocrinology and Infertility.

Q: How do I know what treatment is best?

A: The best treatment depends on the cause of infertility. A proper center does at least a month of evaluation on both the woman and the man. The best treatments are tailored for the patient.

Madanes offers his expert answers to six frequently asked questions.

Q: Do centers offer rates of success and how do I interpret them?

Q: If infertility is suspected, when should someone seek help?

These can be difficult to interpret because some infertility centers may not take older women, or certain conditions. I believe that it’s up to the doctor to tell a patient what the chances are for a woman of her age or situation. A good center offers a fair assessment and lets the patient decide.

A: Generally, if a woman is over 35 and has been trying for six months to become pregnant without success, she should look for help. For a woman under 35, it can be up to a year, unless there are known problems such as irregular periods or ovulation that would prevent her from becoming pregnant on her own. If you suspect you are infertile, then you should seek help right away.

Q: What should I look for in a fertility center and specialist?

A: There are three sub-specialties in gynecology; oncology, high-risk pregnancy and reproductive endrocrinology and infertility. Just as you wouldn’t see a general gynecologist if you had cancer, you wouldn’t see one for fertility treatments. When choosing a specialist, make sure that the doctor is Board certified in Reproductive Endocrinology and Infertility, not just in Obstetrics and Gynecology.

A: Are fertility treatments covered by insurance?

Illinois has a mandate that it be covered, but there are many exceptions so for many, it’s like not having coverage at all. Some insurance companies, like Blue Cross HMO-IL, offer excellent coverage, others can vary. It’s too early to know what kind of coverage will be available under the Affordable Care Act. New year...new pastime With the New Year comes another opportunity to make positive changes in your life. A few years ago I resolved to lead a healthy lifestyle by making small changes throughout the year, like cutting back to one soda a day and drinking more water, and have had much success with this approach.

Lately my focus has been on making the time to relax, including trying new things. If carving more “me time” into the day sounds like a good resolution for you, try a monthly or weekly stop off on your commute. There are plenty of options to try a new hobby or activity along the train line.

First stop – Powell’s Way of Kenpo in Brookfield (north of tracks, 3741 Grand Blvd., www.wayofkenpo.com). Although predominantly practiced by men, more women have been training in the martial arts at Powell’s Way of Kenpo. Classes focus on traditional techniques as well as martial arts scenarios and ways to build strength and endurance.

Since classes are designed for all skill levels, new students are paired with veteran students to see the correct way to do moves.

For a more practical application, Powell’s Way of Kenpo also offers self-defense classes for women.

In addition to learning physical moves, students focus on awareness to recognize potential threats so as to avoid having a physical confrontation. People can observe any classes for free and try three classes for free before signing up.

Second stop – Ceramic Art Café in La Grange (south of

As someone who likes to multitask, spending an hour creating a masterpiece that can later be given as a homemade gift seems like a good use of time to me. Ceramic Art Café offers an extensive collection of ceramic pieces, like mugs and plates, and the supplies, including stamps, stencils and sponges, to design and paint your work of art.

Once you are done, you leave the finished piece there for staff to glaze and fire in the store’s kiln. Come back in a week to pick it up. Bonus: the pieces are dishwasher, oven and microwave safe. If another resolution is to spend more time with friends, the café also takes reservations for ladies’ night and other occasions.

Last stop – The Quilt Basket in Downers Grove (south of tracks, 1012 Curtiss St., www.thequiltbasket.com). If you know the basics of sewing and want to try something new, quilting might be the hobby for you. The Quilt Basket in Downers Grove offers a beginning quilter’s class several times a year. During the sixweek course, students learn the fundamentals of quilting, such as cutting strips and making blocks, while making their own quilt to take home.

Once you’ve mastered the basics of quilting, the store offers classes focusing on other techniques, like jelly roll quilts made with 2 ½ inch strips.

Quilters also can stop by to work on their projects, pick up fabrics or enjoy the company of fellow quilters.

And most of the green choices are equally beneficial to planet and body, reducing the effects of common allergens while minimizing our carbon footprint. The suburbs abound with entrepreneurs ready to serve the environmental concerns of families and households across our communities.

At the most basic of concerns is the air we breathe. Since 1974, E.L. Foust Co., Inc. has manufactured air purifiers designed for people with multiple chemical sensitivities, environmental illness, allergies and asthma.

“Before there even was a green market, we were selling and making green products,” says President Joe Muchow. “We're kind of a leading edge company. That's what the basis of this company was, was to make air purifiers that did not have toxicity. Our customers are the ones who need it most.”

Edwin Foust's own wife suffered from severe environmental illness and allergies, leading him to create such air purifiers. The company has evolved over the years, now also carrying water filters, HVAC filters and home and environment products like paints, building and construction materials, cleaning products and detergents, vacuums and even personal care products like shampoos, conditioners, styling items and even baby products like baby wash and baby powder.

“Everything we have is geared toward very safe products,” Muchow says.

With a daughter with severe food allergies and brothers with a severe allergy to propylene glycol, the business seemed a natural progression.

EcoManiacs is an environmentally friendly and socially conscious certified green boutique specializing in toys, books, apparel and accessories for the family. It opened to the public in December 2012 and is the brainchild of mother-daughter duo Leah Kroeger and Klinger.

“When we first opened, people just kind of thought we were a toy store,” Klinger says. “But now that sustainable and natural is coming more to the forefront and becoming more accessible, we have definitely seen a bigger influx of people.”

Toys, books and puzzles are some of the store's most popular items with toys made from recycled milk jugs, organic cotton teethers, sustainably-harvested wooden toys being some of the most sought-after items. Everything is BPA free and completely chemical free.

The store also regularly offers educational events.

“It's just something we've felt compelled to do from the beginning,” she says. “We teach people how to lessen their impact on the environment and help them feel they are doing their part.”

In August 2013, EcoManiacs was certified as a Green Business by the Illinois Green Business Association.

Artisan ingredients, creative combinations make morning meals marvelous

Donna Hesik owns Suzette’s Creperie in Wheaton, the result of a love affair with French street food.

“It all started with a trip to France. It all started in Paris,” she says, explaining that she became entranced by vendors selling crepes from outdoor carts and thought that people in the United States should experience that also. “I was a street vendor for three years selling crepes – 16 years ago – and that’s how I got started. It was like a dream… It was so much fun!”

Later Hesik opened her restaurant in Wheaton and quickly decided that her restaurant would serve French food but with an American twist.

“In France they don’t have a big breakfast.”

Hesik explains, “They’ll just have a coffee, juice, and a pastry like a chocolate or a plain croissant or a crusty piece of French Bread with butter. Since we’re in America you have to have eggs and French toast and we make ours with croissants. How can you go wrong with a chocolate croissants made into French toast?

If Suzette’s Creperie is about traditional French elegance, Il Poggiolo in Hinsdale has its sights set on innovation.

“A lot of our brunch items have an Italian theme to them,” says co-owner Dana Burdi.

“For us, we wanted to have something indicative of our cuisine, but something that’s fresh – with fresh ingredients Burdi recites a list of her favorite omelets and skillets with the same vigor as if she were describing her own children: Quattro

Formaggi, Salsiccia, Padella Pollo. She was sure to mention Il Poggiolo has a sweet side too, “Pancakes and waffles that are Italian based. Ricotta pancakes and tiramisu waffles. Instead of French toast we have Italian toast and it’s made with ciabatta bread.”

Raised in a railway family with close ties to coal and iron mining. Charles Smith grew familiar with mainline steam, first generation diesels as open pit operations, lake steamers, and the great steel mills of south Chicago. As a youth he sketched and drew, and later in college worked in printing. Upon returning from military service, Smith starting painting while working in industry, and studying great industrial illustrators Walter Greene and William H. Foster.

Smith would develop his own style of images conveying a drama of light and motion. Soon a full time artist and teacher, he worked in oil on linen. With his primary focus on railway subjects, he expanded to paint marine, aircraft, and street scenes, while also cleaning and restoring oil paintings for gallery customers.
