T

he first Stacy’s Tavern EuropeanAmerican Settlers arrived in this area in 1833 when three Babcock brothers took claim of land along what later would become St. Charles Road and was called Babcock’s Grove. As additional families arrived, a log cabin schoolhouse was constructed, and was the community’s first public building. The Stacy family arrived and purchased land on what is now Geneva Road, where they constructed a wayside inn in 1846, a tavern for the landseekers and travelers.

This building is still on its original foundation and is Glen Ellyn’s only museum: Stacy’s Tavern Museum. The community became known as Stacy’s Corners.

The residents of Stacy’s Corners tried to persuade the new railroad to lay tracks by their community. But Dr. Lewey Newton owned land a mile south in what we now call “downtown”. He built a train station at his own expense in 1848 which shifted the center of the community. This stop became known as Newton Station. In 1851, David Kelley became station agent. There was already a Newton town in Illinois, so Kelley named the town Danby for his birthplace in Vermont.

Glen Ellyn Hotel

The quiet country village of Danby changed its named in 1874 to Prospect Park, after some of the men who returned from the Civil War had altered the town’s reputation to “rowdyish” with their behavior. In the 1880’s Prospect Park transformed into a Chicago suburb. Successful businessman and author Thomas E. Hill settled here in 1885 with his wife Ellen. It is thought that the town’s name was changed to Glen Ellyn after Mrs. Hill and for the village’s lovely glens. The creation of Lake Ellyn became by damming up a stream and the mineral springs which attracted visitors and further changing the town’s character. The Glen Ellyn Hotel and Springs Company enhanced the springs and built Hotel Glen Ellyn, which was struck by lightning and destroyed by fire in 1906. The Glen Ellyn Volunteer Fire Department was organized in 1907, and remains vibrant to this day.

Profile of the Village of Glen Ellyn

I

n the heart of DuPage County, the scenic Village of Glen Ellyn is a prosperous, civic minded community offering big city amenities with a small town feel. Glen Ellyn has much to offer by way of shopping, dining, entertainment and a historic downtown. The village is approximately 25 miles west of Chicago, encompasses a 6.7 square mile area and is home to 27,500 residents. Glen Ellyn is easily accessible by major highways, airports and the downtown Metra station.

The Village operates under a trustee form of government as defined

by Illinois Compiled Statues. The Village President, Village Clerk

and six trustees are elected at large to serve four-year terms, with three trustees elected every second year. The Village Manager is the chief administrative officer of the Village and is responsible for day-to-day operations. The Village Manager oversees a team of six department directors including Finance, Police, Village Links golf course and Reserve 22 restaurant, Public Works, Legal and Planning and Development.

Who To Call When You Need Help several community programs including Coffee with the Cops – a monthly informal chat with the Chief held in a group setting.

T

he Glen Ellyn Police Department is staffed 24 hours per day, 365 days a year by 40 sworn police officers and 13 full and part-time civilian employees. In June 2017, the Police Department moved into their new 29,000 square foot facility, located at 65 S. Park Boulevard. This new station, which serves as the new base of operations for the Department, offers enhanced safety features and a new modern day facility to better serve the community. The GEPD responds to nearly 40,000 calls for service each year, and their staff excels at practicing a customer service approach to law enforcement. The Department offers

The Glen Ellyn Volunteer Fire Company (GEVFC) has been providing emergency services to the town of Glen Ellyn since 1907. The Fire Company exemplifies that Glen Ellyn truly is a Village of Volunteers. The men and women of the Fire Company are a diverse group of individuals made up of accountants, pilots, business owners, executives, nurses, lawyers, salespeople and municipal employees. While many communities have transitioned to a tax-supported fire department, the Volunteer Fire Company remains steadfastly committed to serving and protecting its neighbors. Lake Ellyn Park, the scene of the annual Lake Ellyn Cardboard Regatta, is a picturesque spot where naturalists and volunteers have made great strides toward restoring the native oak savanna. The recently refurbished historic Lake Ellyn Boathouse is considered the “jewel� of Glen Ellyn.

The Glen Ellyn Park District has ample activities year round from platform tennis to disc golf. The District also operates Holes & Knolls, a 36-hole miniature golf course, an off-leash dog park, Sunset Pool, features a waterslide and diving boards, a splash park, and two recreation centers where offers a range of camps and classes. In the winter, the sled hill and outdoor ice rinks are popular spots for cold-weather fun.

The Village Links of Glen Ellyn is a Village owned golf course offering 27 holes of golf. Boasting a top-rated, 7,200 yard championship 18-hole course. The Links has hosted 43 USGA and PGA Tour Qualifying events.

The regulation length 9-hole course is ideal for the serious golfer as well as casual play.

uch can be said about a village that has community service at its core, and Glen Ellyn is no exception. Whether it’s a large global organization such as the Rotary Club of Glen Ellyn or a smaller, local group such as Teen Parent Connection, non-profits make tangible differences in a community, and offer a way for residents to give back while helping to improve the lives of those who are in need of a helping hand. DuPage PADS, Community Housing Advocacy & Development and Bridge Communities all focus on providing shelter for individuals who struggle with housing. The Glen Ellyn Food Pantry provides support for community members who live with food security issues. Longstanding nonprofit groups provide a variety of services to the community, including Knights of Columbus, St. Petronille, Kiwanis Club of Glen Ellyn, Kiwanis Club of Central DuPage and Glen Ellyn Lions Club, while NAMI of DUPage County, Glen Ellyn Infant Welfare and CASA of DuPage County help to protect the most vulnerable. And lets not forget our furry friends. The Animal Rescue Foundation strives to rescue and foster homeless dogs and cats while searching for new families for these animals.
