Library marks 125 years with nostalgic programs and celebratory events

n 1891, the Ladies Library Association opened a small reading room above the Farmers Market and Merchants Bank on the northeast corner of Main and Curtiss in Downers Grove. By 1895, the library held about 700 volumes.

She added that adult fiction and nonfiction books in Chinese, Polish and Spanish were introduced earlier this year as part of the new World Languages Collection.

“We added more study rooms and Downers Grove Grade School District 58 and Community High School District 99 have tutors here and host events here. They all need workspaces,” Doornbos says.

Back in 2012, a strategic plan included a $2.4 million renovation plan for more study spaces, upgraded technology, improved Wi-Fi, enhanced displays of items and a cafe space. Construction was completed two years later.

This, of course, was not the first round of renovations for the 67,738-square-foot library.

It began in 1911, following a successful referendum for a tax-supported library, when a small building on the southwest corner of Main and Curtiss became the library’s second home. Circulation had jumped to 1,520

by November 1912 – nearly doubling the collection housed in the reading room above the bank.

Downers Grove Public Library Director

By SHONDA DUDLICEK | Photos by ALDO RISOLVO Julie Milavec is a third generation librarian, and the newest member of the Downers Grove community, taking the helm as Downers Grove Public Library director. Suburban Life Magazine writer Shonda Dudlicek took a few minutes to chat with Milavec about the job, her experience as director for the Plainfield Public Library, and her hopes for the future.

SHONDA DUDLICEK: How does it feel to take over a library in the midst of its 125th year?

JULIE MILAVEC: The Downers Grove Library has a long history of service to this community. This anniversary year is the perfect time to celebrate that history and plan for the library’s future. I’m eager to begin talking to residents about their needs and to the board and staff about how the library can best meet those needs.

DUDLICEK: What have you learned as director of the Plainfield Public Library?

MILAVEC: The way people access information changed significantly during my tenure there. Public libraries had to evolve to keep pace. In 2000, cellphones were not common. Now they have more power than home computers from that time. How libraries provide access to information and recreational reading material shifted from focusing on physical to encompassing a variety of virtual access points. It’s paramount for libraries to keep up with technology and the way people access and use information.

DUDLICEK: Many of us have fond memories of the visiting the library as children. What notable memories do you have?

MILAVEC: My father was the director of the Joliet Public Library when I was growing up, so I have lots of memories of the library!

I was always asking my dad to bring me something new, one of those kids who checked out stacks and stacks of books at a time. One vivid memory is testing the very

first computer catalog for the library. To prove it would be easy for kids to use, my dad had my brother and I come in and try it, without any instructions. We were about 9 and 10 at the time. We loved it – and the skeptical staff was sold!

DUDLICEK: What is the library’s place in the community and how should it serve the public?

MILAVEC: By definition, it provides access to knowledge, information and works of the imagination for all, regardless of age, beliefs, ability to pay, etc. But exactly what that DUDLICEK: Why did you decide on a means is as individual as the community career in library science? served. As the school year gears up, residents can reflect on school days gone by

A

s area children, parents and teachers prepare to head back to the classroom, the Downers Grove Park District Museum is offering a nostalgic look at the early days of school in the community.

Education in Downers Grove all started with an unnamed, one-room schoolhouse at Maple and Dunham roads. Schoolteacher Mary Blodgett, daughter of early Downers Grove residents and abolitionists Israel and Avis Blodgett, was just 12 years old.

“When people hear that she was only 12, they say, ‘Oh my goodness! That’s unbelievable!’ and they want to hear more,” says Sarah Konzen, curator of the Downers Grove Museum.

Konzen says many history museum visitors are excited about Downers Grove schools. “We see a lot of passion with people who grew up here.

They’ll say, ‘I remember Washington School and the park before it was torn down.’ We see a lot of Downers Grove North and South alumni, and Harris Junior High alumni. They always bring up the schools they attended. So, my supervisor and I were talking about that and we came up with ‘Getting Schooled.’”

The exhibit, “Getting Schooled: The History of Downers Grove Schools,” opens Aug. 6 and celebrates the evolution of schools and the educational system, from textbooks to tablets.

The exhibit starts with the small frame schoolhouse and touches on every school.

“When you just read about that and see the growth of everything, it’s pretty amazing,” Konzen says.

Lincoln School, built in the 1870s, graduated its first class in 1879. It’s now Lincoln Center, owned by the park district, and is a community senior center and dance center.

Some of the artifacts that will be on display include an old turn-of-the-century school desk from Lincoln School, a 1905 band uniform with an original drum and a 1913 high school graduation dress. “It’s white-ivory and lace and long, and very small,” Konzen says. “According to records kept by the family, it was worn for the graduation ceremony.”

The museum will have many yearbooks from Downers Grove North, which was built in 1929, and Downers Grove South, built in 1964.

Yearbooks from Herrick Junior High School, built in 1953, also will be on display.

Konzen is excited to showcase a bicentennial quilt made by a kindergarten class at Washington School. “We’re still figuring out how to display it and all the hard work the students put into it,” Konzen says.

She says the exhibit will have “a lot of neat report cards from various schools,” and these will be used to represent schools that may not have as many artifacts.

Other valuable artifacts include an old bell, door and doorknob, all from Lincoln School. Plus a brick from Washington School, which stood from 1891 to 1987. The school was sold to the park district and used as a recreation center, and Konzen says newspaper articles told of asbestos removal at least twice. In the 2000s, it was torn down to make way for a park.

The display will have rare textbooks including an English grammar book from 1863, algebra book from 1894 and a school dictionary from 1875.

“It’s a really neat book. We’re comparing the books to the tablets and technology of then and now,” Konzen says.

Downers Grove’s school district was founded in 1846, the same year the Blodgett House was built, documented as an active stopover on the Underground Railroad. The exhibit covers the histories of School Districts 58 and 99.

“We’re still working on putting together all the text panels and all the pictures of the different schools that we received through donations

“And there is work done by students as well, including the Avery Coonley School Building,” Konzen says. The Kindergarten Extension Association School began as a kindergarten in 1912 and a newer school opened in 1929.

On display is a 1926 notebook by a student named “Louise” who attended the original Avery Coonley School. “The current school is on Maple and Dunham, built in 1929, and it existed since 1916 on Grove Street, so because this notebook is from 1926, Louise went to the original school,” FAMILY IN FOCUS

“And really, how teaching has evolved in technology in the classroom. Today it’s more hands-on. Back then students memorized dates, verses and poems. Now kids know they can go online and they’re so knowledgeable and resourceful,” Konzen says.

Change might be happy: the birth of a child, a job promotion, achieving a goal, or meeting someone new.

Change can be sad or unexpected: a job loss, the death of a loved one, the end of a relationship, or the disappointment of a goal not coming to fruition.

Change is part of the world we live in: the different seasons, daily weather changes, and the various living creatures we may see around us.

Change may be the one constant in life. Ironic, isn’t it? Without change; whether it be intellectual growth, a change of scenery, new friends, a change in circumstances, embracing new opportunities, or just acknowledging that today is different than yesterday, how can we each grow and grab all that life has to offer?

Try to focus on the new opportunities that change presents: a chance to make new friends, the opportunity to meet new teachers, the possibilities of learning new and exciting things.

Don’t dismiss worries, but do your best to minimize them, and whenever possible, reveal the bright possibilities that go along with those worries.

CELEBRITY DANCE BUILDS FAMILY OF LOCAL STUDENTS OVER A DECADE IN DOWNERS GROVE

Remember dancing?

The happiness that came from letting yourself go and moving to the beat of the music? As youngsters, dancing was freedom…we’d spin and soar and strike a pose, without any qualms of how we looked… just the pure joy that came from taking the steps and hearing the music.

For many of us, dancing has all but drifted from our regular routines. But for Ann Garvey, dancing has been a way of life, and she can make it a part of yours again, as well.

Ann opened Celebrity Dance Studio a decade ago, and is marking the 10th anniversary of the business here in Downers Grove, where folks find and rediscover the joy of dancing that she has enjoyed for more than 35 years.

Passionate about dance since she was a child, Ann says she discovered the true benefits when she began teaching others.

As a young teacher with a major chain, Ann went on to win many awards and national placements. Soon, with young children of her own, she took her teaching to a home–based ballroom, where she could remain familyfocused while still pursuing her love of dance.

Naturally, since her home was filled with music and dancing, her own passion transcended to her children, and they would become an integral part of the process –

assisting in the business, and becoming skilled dancers as well.

Today, three of Ann’s four grown children work at Celebrity Dance Studio, which Ann opened in 2006. It’s a true family business – Ann and her children Brian, Nicholas and Kimberly Blanc, along with Ann’s son-in-law Michael and daughter in-law Cara, work at the studio.

“We teach all age levels, all abilities at different levels, social dancing and

competitive,” Ann explains. There are classes in Waltz, Fox Trot, Swing, Tango, Cha-Cha, Rumba, Samba, Mambo, Merengue, and even country line dancing available. You can learn in a group class, or in a private lesson with your own instructor. Either way, Celebrity promises students’ enjoyment.

“Students will experience the joy of dance when they come through our doors and will immediately feel like part of our family,” Ann says.

Often they return to discover more, or expand their interest into a full-fledged hobby, or an ongoing social outlet. Still others find a passion similar to Ann’s own, and begin to compete in ballroom dance.

Today, Ann and her family of dance instructors have expanded their reach in the community, teaching dance to residents at Villa St. Benedict Senior Living Center in Lisle.

“We value the importance of being an active member in our community and feel

it is equally important to give back and share our success,� Ann says. “I teach seniors weekly the benefits of dance. It has been very rewarding.�

And the community seems to appreciate the effort as well. Many community members and current and former students celebrated with the staff last month, as they marked the 10-year anniversary of the studio in grand style. Additionally, Celebrity Dance last year was awarded the Chamber 630 Business Excellence Award for a service business in Downers Grove. “We were extremely honored,â€? recalls Ann. “Downers Grove has a very strong sense of community and have always felt really welcomed. Now my family, your family‌our family can embrace the next 10 years together with the passion and excitement dancing brings to us all!â€?

BUILDING BARRIERS TO BULLYING Mary Ellen Young teaches youngsters, parents to quell relational aggression

By MELISSA RUBALCABA RISKE There was a time when Mary Ellen Young thought teasing and bullying was just a part of childhood.

Today, that idea couldn’t be further from her perspective.

“I remember believing, ‘that’s how girls are,’ and you deal with it and outgrow it,” Young says.

“I’ve learned what happens in adolescence can affect one’s whole life.”

Young co-created Helping Girls Navigate Adolescence in 2005 providing workshops and programming to help young women as well as their parents. The aim is to help girls build social and emotional skills.

“We may not be able to prevent bullying and some of the other challenges of adolescence, but when it does happen, we want them to have good, solid strategies and the social and emotional skills that will help them cope with it, build resilience and ultimately thrive,” Young says.

Young says she never expected to be at the helm of nonprofit organization teaching social and emotional skills. She read an article about relational aggression and the affects of bullying in a school board publication that inspired her to change her view on the subject.

At the time, she was serving on the District 58 School Board in Downers Grove and able to talk with other parents about concerns with bullying. She was motivated to start with a panel discussion at the local library. From there the organization and its programming began to grow and expand with workshops for children as well as parents.

The first year, the group worked with programming for girls in middle school.

Young says the programs went well, but they soon learned there was a greater interest to include younger age groups. They expanded

programming to work with girls in fourth through sixth grades, as well as their parents.

The popular “Chick Chat” program has been offered for the last 11 years. The program has the capacity to serve 350 girls and most years the program fills every slot, Young says.

After helping to create Helping Girls Navigate Adolescence, Young now serves as the director of programs as well as continuing to serve on the group’s board of directors. HGNA has developed into an organization with more than 100 active volunteers, multiple programs for girls in kindergarten through eighth grades and educational programs for parents. Programming includes a yoga club and CORE program, both targeted to support girls in the middle school age group, as well as HGNA Dads, which emphasizes the importance of the fatherdaughter relationship during adolescence.

“I just get so passionate about providing young people with the tools,” Young says.

Young and HGNA have drawn interest from other communities and that has led to opportunities to make an impact on anti-bullying policies. She worked with Darlene Ruscitti, regional school superintendent for DuPage County to help develop a model anti-bullying policy. The policy was adopted by schools throughout DuPage as well as outside of the county.

Wine Floats!

love summer time. I love all the activities, the family parties, the outdoor dinners...pretty much everything about summer, except the mosquitoes.

I find that, in general, we do a lot more entertaining and partying during the summer than say, in January or February. And when I think of summer entertaining, I always think of sparkling wine and freshly baked fruit pies …topped with ice cream, of course. Sparkling wine, fresh fruit and ice cream are three of my favorite summer things. Now, how to combine them to make them even better? The answer....wine floats!

So, in an effort to find the perfect summer time wine “float,” we experimented and experimented and experimented. (It was hard work, let me tell ya!) Here are a few of our favorites.

u HELPFUL HINTS: • Chill glasses prior to filling. It will keep your floats colder longer.

• When recipe calls for sparkling wine, use Prosecco instead of Champagne. It is less expensive and ever so slightly more fruity.

• Each of the recipes makes two drinks (dependent on the size of your glasses.)

¢ EASY PEASY SPARKLING SORBET FLOAT • 1 c. sorbet (your favorite flavor, but we like raspberry the best) • Prosecco Put two or three small scoops of sorbet into a champagne flute. Top with Prosecco. That’s it! It’s that easy and looks and tastes great. You can also add fresh fruit to this one. Raspberries or peaches would be perfect. ¢ SGROPPINO* • 1 c. Prosecco (Try Fantinel or Mionetto Prosecco. Both are good.)

• 2 Tbsp. vodka • ½ c. lemon sorbet • fresh mint Combine Prosecco, vodka and sorbet in a cocktail shaker. Stir (do not shake) vigorously with wooden spoon. The sorbet shouldn’t melt too much. When it’s the consistency of a thick custard, pour into martini glass, garnish with mint leaf and serve immediately. *Sgroppino is the Italian name for this drink. We call it the “Cindy Slushy” after one of our favorite bartenders.

¢ APRICOT SPARKLING FLOAT • 1 c. Prosecco • ½ c. apricot nectar • 1 pt. vanilla ice cream In a tall thin glass, put two small scoops of ice cream. Top with 2 Tbsp. apricot nectar. Add another two scoops of ice cream and another 2 Tbsp. nectar. Fill each glass with Prosecco (approx. ½ c.). ¢ RED VELVET FLOAT • 1 c. red velvet ice cream • club soda or seltzer • Rioja red wine • 2 strawberries In a martini glass, put two small scoops of ice cream, top with Rioja and a splash of club soda. Garnish with strawberry. ¢ SPARKLING CHERRY FLOAT • 12 Maraschino cherries • 1 c. vanilla ice cream • sparkling Shiraz In a tall glass, muddle three Maraschino cherries. Top with one scoop of ice cream and three more cherries (whole or chopped, do not muddle). Fill glass with sparkling Shiraz.

¢ KIWI FLOAT • ½ c. honeydew melon balls • 1 c. vanilla ice cream • Sauvignon Blanc (Pomelo makes a really nice Sauvignon Blanc that works well with this.)

• club soda or seltzer • 1 kiwi, sliced In an 8 or 10 oz. wine glass, place ¼ c. melon balls. Top with one small scoop of ice cream. Fill glass with Sauvignon Blanc and a splash of club soda. Garnish with a slice of Kiwi or two. ¢ CREAMSICLE FLOAT • 1 c. vanilla ice cream • 1 c. orange sherbet • ½ c. orange juice • 2 oz. Triple Sec • Prosecco

Children who take music lessons enjoy a “profound” and lasting impact on their brains according to neuropsychologist Brenda Hanna-Pladdy of Emory University in Atlanta. Pladdy continues her thought by explaining that children who have musical training create additional neural connections during childhood that can “last a lifetime and help compensate for cognitive declines later on in life.”

Music is Brain Food More than 15 years ago, Harvard neurologist Gottfried Schlaug reported that the brains of adult professional musicians had more gray matter than those of non-musicians.

Alison Balbag, a professional harpist who began musical training at the age of five, holds a doctorate in music, and is currently earning her Ph.D. in gerontology (with a special focus on the impact of music on health throughout the lifespan) at the University of Southern California adds to Schlaug’s findings and said, “What’s unique about playing an instrument is that it requires a wide array of brain regions and cognitive functions to work together simultaneously, in both right and left hemispheres of the brain.”

Your mind is boosted daily by listening to music Though research about the effects of music on an older brain is interesting, how to listen may be elusive. Here are some tips to get you started listening to music.

• If you were a flower child of the sixties and love the oldies from that time, get some CDs or downloads from that era. Listening to familiar music brings back memories from your teens and twenties.

• But, check with your kids and your grandkids as to what music they listen to – then try listening to some of their music since new music challenges the brain differently from the way that music you are familiar with does. In fact, when you first listen to some new

music it may be less than pleasurable as your brain is unaccustomed to hearing new melodies and lyrics.

• Music is a great way for exercising your mind and you can do it by yourself in your home, with a group, at a concert or in the garden. Many of today’s smartphones have radio software so you can listen wherever you go.

So, pay attention to how your body reacts to different types of music – you may find that Hip-Hop music is not good for your concentration while classical music is.

Create a music playlist for each activity you want a musical background for. Tasks include: • concentrating • exercising • relaxing • just for pleasure When these things are done to musical accompaniment your brain is getting its daily dose of growth.

ADVENTURER ALASTAIR HUMPHREYS SHARES HIS PHILOSOPHY ON CLOSE-TO-HOME EXPLORATION

That’s what U.K. author and itinerant traveler Alastair Humphreys says in his blog about upending the monotonous moments of daily life by seeking out microadventures – short, inexpensive and close-tohome outdoor experiences.

As the inventor of the microadventure, Humphreys – who also wrote a book on the subject – uses the concept to inspire “real people with real lives” to “hit the refresh button” by getting back to nature for a day, an evening or even just an hour.

Solo camping on a hilltop via bivvy bag, an impromptu trail hike under the stars and cycling the morning commute to work instead of driving are just a few examples of microadventures offered by Humphreys.

“What was precious to me about my adventures was going to new places, leaving the boring bits of the ‘real world’ behind, slowing down, simplifying, having time to think, being out in nature and having fun,”

says Humphreys. “I realized that I did not need to go to the ends of the earth to find all those things.”

Though Humphreys adheres to the notion that adventure is all around at all times, he is no novice when it comes to world travel.

The 39-year-old Brit was named one of National Geographic’s Adventurers of the Year in 2012. His travel credentials include a round-the-world cycling journey that took him 46,000 miles through 60 countries; he has walked across southern India; rowed across the Atlantic Ocean; ran six marathons through the Sahara desert; and trekked 1,000 miles across the Arabian Peninsula’s Empty Quarter desert – a journey documented in the film “Into the Empty Quarter.”

“Many people love the idea of adventure; of turning off the computer and heading for some place you have never been before; of sleeping under the stars and enjoying coffee with your friends as the sun rises in front of you,” says Humphreys. “Yet

most people do not have the time, or the inclination, to embark on an expedition that takes months or years to complete. And so, most people don’t have the chance to live as adventurously as they might dream of doing.”

There is more opportunity for adventure than a person’s scant two weeks of vacation or even the weekend. As Humphreys points out in his blog, from 9-to-5 most people are occupied by job-oriented obligation, but the often-neglected 5-to-9 block of time can serve as a window of opportunity.

“I am a busy person, like all of us,” says Humphreys, adding that he has benefitted enormously from taking microadventures during the 5-to-9 timeframe. “Just knowing that less than an hour from the computer … is an empty hilltop where I can lay back and watch the sun set this evening, is enough to bring a smile to my face.”

While the tenets of a microadventure include minimal planning and keeping it close to home, Humphreys has implemented the concept while traveling abroad, as well. On a recent trip to L.A., the microadventure mastermind put what he preaches to practice by setting aside time during his busy business trip to sleep under the stars.

“Arriving in [L.A.], I felt jet-lagged and horrible. Instead of collapsing in a hotel room, I made the effort to seek out a deserted hilltop,” says Humphreys. “Nobody on Earth knew where I was; nobody disturbed me. And I grinned to myself as I woke the next morning – refreshed and ready to explore – with the best view of anyone in that enormous city.”

S

tarting a new school year is an exciting, potentially nerve-wracking time for kids.

The way parents manage the first few weeks of classes can make a big difference.

It’s common for a child to feel nervous about going back to school. New teachers, different routines, difficult classes, maybe even a new school, would make any child edgy. It would be helpful for parents to be empathetic and reassuring.

Try some of these strategies to help ease their jitters: Set a routine. Establish a routine for homework and bedtime, and start practicing it before school starts.

Be selective when talking about school. It’s important to set expectations about the new school year, but let your child initiate questions and discussion. Show enthusiasm about the teaching staff and principal.

Clear your schedule. If possible, try not to schedule business trips and evening commitments during the first week of school so you can be home to help your child. Use this time to review the school day, as well as engage in enjoyable family activities.

Tour the school. If your child is switching schools or starting middle or high school, walk around the new building to find classrooms, practice using a locker and find the bus stop.

Allow extra time. Pack lunches and pick clothes before bed to avoid being rushed in the morning.

Send your child to school with a good breakfast.

Don’t turn on the television, tablet or video games before school.

Get to know the staff. From the principal to school psychologist, social worker, guidance counselor, school nurse and teachers, there are many resources for you and your child.

Find “you” time. Set aside at least a small chunk of time each day to do something you like, including hobbies and interests.

Use stress management. Learn to self-soothe, using breathing exercises and mindfulness techniques.

Value your health. Eat smart, get enough sleep and exercise appropriately.

CENTER STAGE as part of theater program

obert Plowman takes the mission of the Progressive Village Performance Network (PVPN) of Westmont to heart: “inspire, nurture, challenge, amaze, educate and empower artists and audiences through diverse access and a variety of participation opportunities.” The Westmont resident and transportation manager by profession, is the founder of the PVPN community theater group which truly seeks to encourage all area residents interested in the stage while also bringing cultural offerings to the area.

Six years ago, the theater devotee approached the Westmont Park District with the idea of launching the local performing arts organization.

“The park district was looking for different programs and I was looking to start a different program,” Plowman says. “I said, ‘what do you think about a community theater group?’ and they went for it hook, line and sinker. The rest is history. We started with a free performance in Ty Warner Park, and it grew from there.”

Plowman says that they worked with the kids, assigning parts that would be comfortable and a little bit challenging.

That’s what we’re about. If someone is rough around the edges when we start, by the time they perform it’s amazing to see how much they’ve grown,” Plowman says. “That’s the high I get. I’ve been in so many other community theaters that are exclusive. This is inclusive. Coming into this, I knew we’d be about finding ways for people to perform rather than only Plowman says shooting for the best show. We can transform people into good performers.”

that we just have a great group of people. We have our normal folks that always show up, but what’s really rewarding is that we’re seeing new faces all of the time, completely through word of mouth. And volunteering is rarely a one-time thing. When someone starts with us, they always then ask, ‘what’s next?’ People enjoy the experience,” Plowman says.

PVPN is truly a community-based organization.

“In addition to helping bring culture to the community, and getting residents involved in performing arts, we also rely on the community,” Plowman says. “For instance, the orchestra in our last performance was provided by Musician’s Workshop, the music instruction place in Westmont. There’s definitely community involvement.”

In addition to counting on the community at large, PVPN is very thankful for their partnership with the park district. “They have done so much to support our organization. We use their resources. We’re part of the park district and they’re part of us. There’s no slowing down.

They’re consistently looking for ways to help us grow the program,” Plowman says.

FINE ARTS FESTIVAL marks 40 years in Downers Grove

I

t will be an auspicious occasion as Downers Grove celebrates its 40th Annual Fine Arts Festival, on September 10 - 11. Against the charming backdrop of downtown Downers Grove, 50 juried artists will show off some of the best of the best original artwork from across the country. The event, says Erin Venezia, marketing director for Downers Grove Downtown Management Corp., “Is a wonderful display of art by a great variety of artists.”

While art shows are abundant throughout Illinois, Downers Grove’s festival is considered to be among the top. “We have a wide variety of product, our artists are quality, the community supports this event, our unique boutiques and restaurants line the streets of the festival... these are all components that make it such a wonderful art show,” says Venezia.

Management of the event has gone through changes during its four-decade history.

Originally, it was run by the Downers Grove Junior Women’s Club, to be replaced by Downers Grove Downtown Management Corp. In 2009, Venezia recalled, Downers Grove Downtown Management hired an event company to host the show. In 2015, she says, “Downtown Management Corporation took back the show.

Quality and variety are two of our main priorities when planning the show.”

painting, sculpture, fiber, ceramic and more. “In our eyes, having a variety of artists is better than having a lot of artist in one medium,” says Venezia.

Artists come from across the country to participate in this prestigious event. “We have a handful of Illinois artists including a couple from Downers Grove. We also have artists from Wisconsin, Kentucky, Iowa and South Dakota,” says Venezia.

Fifty seems to be an ideal number of artists for the festival. Photographer Gregory Winkelmann recalls, “I participated in the show for the first time last year, and knew right away I would come back the following year. The size of the festival was not so huge that your booth would get lost in the maze of rows that other shows have. The people who attended were very friendly and would not only look at my work but also would stop and have a conversation about the art. They were truly interested in who I am and what type of art I’d created and was selling.”

Truly a community event, the Fine Arts Festival both stimulates and is supported by local businesses and organizations. “The Indian Boundary YMCA will be running a children’s craft OUT & ABOUT

booth each day from 10 a.m.-5 p.m. We also have live entertainment during the festival hours.

Last year this included light guitar vocalists, the Downers Grove Choral Society and performers from Downers Grove North and South High Schools,” says Venezia. “Local merchants run promotions, one business has hosted facepainting and handed out complimentary balloons in the past. Businesses will sometimes have a trunk show or a special sale. This is a wonderful weekend to pop in he boutiques and see all the great fall items they have to offer.”
