Editor’s Note Nearly 15 years ago, I was standing in front of an oil painting at the Art Institute of Chicago, when a woman standing next to me said, “This painting is why I moved to this city.”

The painting was “The Old Guitarist” by Pablo Picasso.

Despite my curiosity, I failed to ask the woman why. What was it about this painting that would resolve this woman to uproot her life? Obviously, there was a story there, but – at the time – I was too young, insecure and afraid to pry.

The woman lingered in front of the painting a while longer and walked away, leaving me alone with Picasso’s haunting image of a haggard musician. I searched through shades of blue for some intrinsic meaning. I wanted the “The Old Guitarist” to move me in the same way. I wanted to be let in on the secret.

That day, I witnessed the power of art. Art at it’s finest – whether it’s a musical score, painting, sculpture or the written word – has the ability to transcend the limits of time and compels us to reflect on what it means to be human. Therein lies its value and beauty.

The no-frills promos feature Glocksen – who now goes by the name Gina Glocksen-Ruzicka – in front of her computer, belting out a song a capella.

Though her powerful vocals demonstrate why she was chosen out of thousands of American Idol hopefuls – not once, but twice – her toddler daughter Dany often climbs into her lap and steals the show.

“I’ve had people ask why I don’t wait until she’s sleeping to make the videos, but this is more real. This is my life,” she says.

In the years since she appeared on “American Idol,” Glocksen-Ruzicka, 31, has continued to build her dream career as a professional singer and songwriter, while – at the same time – building a family with her husband in Oswego, where he works as a teacher at Nequa Valley High School.

Glocksen began singing at the age of 7, performing in choirs at school, church and in community theater.

“I come from a family of singers, and at home we sang all the time, so it was a natural thing,” she says.

When she was sixteen, her sister saw an audition announcement for a wedding and bar mitzvah band. Gina auditioned and landed the job. After high school, she began working as a dental assistant, though singing remained her true passion. She continued singing in the wedding band, as well as fronting bar bands.

“American Idol” was at the beginning of its 14-year run on Fox, when Gina’s mom suggested she try out. The current season is being branded as the show’s “Farewell Season.”

In early 2006, she auditioned for the Season 5 cast and, this time, she reached the “Hollywood Round” of 24 hopefuls before she was cut – an experience that left her more determined than ever.

“Dany came along with me on the road (with Ballroom) when she was 3 months old and still nursing, but most of the gigs are on weekends, so Joe is able to be home with her,” Gina says.

For GGB shows close to home, the couple’s close-knit neighborhood helps out, and – in a way – so does Dany herself. While the late nights can be rough, Gina says, “I feel like we have an angel child, because she always seems to sleep late if we didn’t get in until early morning. It’s almost like she knows when we need to rest.”

In addition to co-starring in her mom’s promotional videos, Dany also loves to bang on a drum while Gina plays piano. Looking to the future, the couple hopes for more children, and to increase the band’s wedding and party performances.

“A wedding band is where it all started for me, so I know how to make that work,” she says.

THE PHOTO-FIRST PHENOMENON IS SOCIAL MEDIA CHANGING THE WAY WE EXPERIENCE THINGS?

By STEPHANIE KOHL-MCCORD These days, no matter where you are or what event you are attending, it is not unusual to hear the phrase “but first, let me take a ‘selfie.’”

The social media craze often means documenting everything you do and sharing it on every social media account, such as Facebook, Instagram and Twitter.

Does living in a “sharing”-obsessed society mean that it is populated by a bunch of narcissists fixated on photographing every “like-worthy” moment for the sake of social media – rather than actually experiencing the moment? Or is it merely an additional way for people to share, connect and interact with one other in a digital era?

Photographer Ruthie Hauge, owner of Geneva-based Ruthie Hauge Photography, says that she has seen a trend in more people taking photos at events, and although sometimes the prevalence of devices can make for a more difficult shot for her, as a mom and a documentary photographer, she finds herself torn.

“The picture is what brings back the memory,” says Hauge, who finds herself torn between living in the moment or capturing it digitally when it comes to experiencing “firsts” with her son, who will likely start walking soon.

“Do I want to watch it, or do I want to capture it for later,” Hauge says, adding that it is important to allow yourself to feel and be a part of the moment you are in. “It’s really about balance.”

Sharing such photos on social media is often the next step many people take.

Christine Monnier, a professor of sociology at the College of DuPage in Glen Ellyn, says that while, previously, the only way people could present themselves was face-to-face, social media now provides people with an entirely new and different way to present themselves to others.

“Now with social media, you can completely reconstruct yourself, your image and how you present yourself,” Monnier says.

The professor added that while this might imply disconnect between your online life and “real” life, this isn’t necessarily the case. Rather, it could be seen as a freedom to create your own ideal and make a claim to the person you want to be and how you want to be treated.

It is not either take a photo or experience whatever you are photographing, Monnier says. Sharing things on social media and expecting interactions from others based on posts or photos, has become a part of the overall experience being shared.

“We’re kind of used to living our lives in public, and online is public,” Monnier says.

Although, with constant sharing, people begin to expect a higher level of connectivity through “likes,” feedback and comments. While interaction can sometimes lead to conflict – everyone has seen Twitter feuds – it also can lead a person to feel less isolated, because they are connecting with others via social media, Monnier says.

Monnier noted that having active online accounts also can help expand a person’s brand or business, and some people have even managed to turn their social media presence into a money-making opportunity.

While iPhone photos posted to social media often include doctoring with filters and staging to make a moment a more photogenic and idealized version of itself, in terms of professional photography, Hauge says one trend she has noticed is raw documentary.

People aren’t looking for super posed photos of their events, but rather want things captured naturally, Hauge says.

Although Hauge can’t say for sure, she says the trend toward people really wanting more raw documentation probably does have something to do with people always having a camera, and trying to get that perfect photo.

“I feel like a job as a professional photographer in a documentary setting is an important job,” Hauge says, adding that photos essentially document history.

Because life moves fast, Hauge says, the very best gift you could give anyone – especially a mom – is a trip back in time.

When her children were first born, Hauge’s family was so busy that she almost wished someone were following her around, documenting life, Hauge says.

She says she wouldn’t have wanted those photos to be shared on social media, but rather for her family to have to enjoy as memories.

For some, photo-sharing on social media can heighten the experience of what is being shared. Monnier says that these new forms of interactivity are not necessarily a prophet of doom pointing to a more self-obsessed culture, but are more about connectivity. And while connectivity can bring additional conflict, it also can break down barriers.

The Village Theatre Guild will stage Christopher Durang’s comedy, “Vanya and Sonia and Masha and Spike,” a comedy that won a Tony Award for best play in 2013.

“It won almost every award for theatrics, including best play, so that’s what we’re going to try to do,” says director Kevin Taylor.

“They did it at the Goodman Theater last summer, and it was

“I read some review that called it a black comedy, but I would disagree,” Taylor says. “While there are some ‘Did she say that?’ moments, there’s nothing cringeworthy. It’s got some touching, heartwarming points, and it’s not just comedy, but [has] fully-realized characters and great people.”

“The Clean House,” a new comedy that was a runner-up for the Pulitzer Prize, is about a couple that decide to hire a housekeeper.

Unfortunately, the housekeeper doesn’t like to clean houses.

¢ KEY DIFFERENCE

While both treatments have the same goal of fat reduction, the fundamental difference

between CoolSculpting and liposuction lies in the treatment approach and the degree of invasiveness involved. CoolSculpting is a completely non-surgical, non-invasive procedure, which makes it more suited for patients who wish to avoid invasive cosmetic treatments but without having to compromise on the effectiveness of the procedure.

CoolSculpting makes use of a unique cooling process to freeze away unwanted fat cells in the body’s fat pockets. The fat cells gradually die and become eliminated from the body in a natural way. The treatment is performed non-invasively, using an applicator to deliver focused cooling to the fat cells in the targeted area. Once the fat cells are frozen, they gradually begin to disintegrate. As a result, they start getting removed from the body system in a natural manner. The patient can start seeing results within a few weeks, and improvement will continue to happen for up to three to six months.

DARK ART Photographer Tom Phelan comes out at night to capture images of Illinois

While growing up in Glen Ellyn, Tom Phelan never had any particular interest in photography. During college, he studied clinical psychology until he realized that it wasn’t what he wanted to pursue as a lifelong career.

So, in the interim, he spent five years behind the wheels of big trucks. It was during this time that he bought his first digital camera and began experimenting with it as time permitted – typically at the end of his workdays.

“Most of the time there wasn’t any striking photographic subject matter near the rest areas where I stopped,” says the Wheaton resident, recalling the excitement he felt in Iowa upon discovering an abandoned farm with a derelict old house and castaway bright yellow 1950s tractor.

He currently works part-time in a photo lab at the College of DuPage in Glen Ellyn and devotes his free time to nighttime photographic sessions.

Phelan often travels up to 120 miles to shoot moody images of covered bridges, vintage trains, planes, cars, grain elevators and left-behind farm equipment.

Cultivating patience and a critical eye come into play.

Phelan also says digital cameras are especially suited for night shots requiring lengthy exposure times, which generally vary from five to 25 minutes.

“To me, the light is so much more interesting at night, either moonlight or a combination of moonlight and flash,” he says.

“I guess the more ‘pure’ – for lack of a better word – something is, the better it is,” Phelan says. “For example, let’s say I find an abandoned farm with a satellite dish on it or a lot of plastic around; to me that compromises its aesthetic purity.”

Connecting The Dots of

AUTOIMMUNE DISORDERS A pharmacist’s perspective after some reading and study with Bob Listecki

I

ntrigued by the presence and complications of autoimmune disorders, I decided to further my research on the topic. Of the sources I discovered, two publications stood out:

• “What Your Doctor May Not Tell You About AUTOIMMUNE DISORDERS” by Dr. Stephen B. Edelson, M.D. • “The Probiotics Revolution” by Dr. Gary B. Huffnagle, Ph.D

HERE’S WHAT I HAVE COME TO DISCOVER: If you have one autoimmune disorder you probably have 10, and there probably are 100 health conditions that ought to be called autoimmune disease, and most are being caused by metals, mainly mercury, hiding in different tissues, causing different symptoms.

HERE’S HOW IT WORKS: Different foods cause inflammation, and act like an “army” with a search and destroy mission to find those metals or mercury, causing damage to the tissues. This “army” discovers the hidden mercury, and presents with symptoms of autoimmune disorder – things like food sensitivities.

ALCAT blood testing, available at the pharmacy, can determine which foods are causing the inflammation. Eliminating and rotating these foods can help to eliminate the inflammation or the mission to find these metal toxins.

Food sensitivities are much delayed than their allergy counterparts. If one has a diagnosed autoimmune disorder and eats a highly sensitizing food, a reaction may start as late as two weeks after consumption, and may take two to four months to heal. Unless you test for these foods, you’ll likely never see this connection to your symptoms. No doubt dairy and wheat are big players in this army.

But there are ways to counter the symptoms and begin to feel better.

By 32 degrees we cannot acquire free vitamin D from the sun all year long. In Chicago we cannot make any from mid-October until mid-March.

Shade finds the silver dental fillings and mercury amalgams to be the source of the elemental mercury, while fish consumption (especially tuna) is the main source of organic or methyl mercury. Older preservatives such as ethyl mercury, used in in immunizations, can have an effect on the overall mercury load of these autoimmune disorders. Links even have been found to autism (now considered an autoimmune disease) and low vitamin D.

For example, one autoimmune disorder is diabetes, and in Northern Finland, the population experiences juvenile diabetes at its highest incidence rate. Giving babies 1000 IU daily dietary vitamin D supplementation eliminated 90 percent of those cases.

The last dot is the testing for species and location of mercury in our bodies. The MercuryTri-Test from QuickSilver Scientific is a hair, urine and blood test for both the elemental and inorganic forms of mercury. Test creator and inorganic chemist Chris Shade, considers the removal of the metal toxins to be a long-term process - a marathon not a sprint. His detoxing program suggests three months of therapy and three months rest, with retesting to validate reductions in these hidden stores of metals.

These autoimmune conditions seem to be growing and advancing, resulting in more sick people in the population. Causes could include the manner of our birth, or even how our grandmothers were born. Our diet is playing a large role, as is the overall condition of our immune systems. ART SAFARI GUIDE TO SPRING GALLERY EXHIBITIONS

ver the past three decades, the galleries at the College of DuPage have accumulated an impressive collection of art, most of which – after all-too-brief displays in the public view – has been stored away in the college’s archives.

But, later this summer and fall, some of the most choice pieces of the college’s collection will again come under the lights, as the school’s Cleve Carney Art Gallery will host its special 30th Anniversary Exhibition.

“For me, the most fun and interesting part of it all is getting to look back through the works from the past shows,” says Justin Witte, curator and director of the Cleve Carney gallery, which is located on COD’s campus in Glen Ellyn.

Curated by Chicago artist and curator Brandon Alvendia, the show, scheduled to run from Aug. 22 through Oct. 1, will divide the on-campus gallery into three sections, in a salonstyle installation with work hung floor to ceiling, and it will include programming with artist lectures, discussions and screenings, Witte says.

“We’ve had some amazing exhibitions through the years,” Witte says. “And we think people will really find this fun, too.”

The COD show, however, is just one of many that Witte and other art lovers are looking forward to attending in DuPage County in coming months.

Outside of upcoming exhibitions at COD – including the annual juried student art show from April 7 through May

21 and this summer’s group show of Chicago painters from June 1 through July 31 – Witte says he was particularly interested in attending upcoming exhibitions at the Elmhurst Art Museum.

The Elmhurst Art Museum, 50 S. Cottage Hill Ave., Elmhurst, will host the U.S. premiere of Playboy Architecture, 1953-1979, in May. Originated in the Netherlands and curated by Beatriz Colomina of Princeton University, the exhibit “explores the role of architecture” in Playboy magazine, “based on years of research illustrating how cities, buildings, interiors, furniture and products played an important role in the world of Playboy,” says Jenny Gibbs, executive director at the Elmhurst museum.

The exhibition – which will feature the contributions to Playboy by architects such as Frank Lloyd Wright, Buckminster Fuller and Ludwig Mies van der Rohe – will be presented in van der Rohe’s 1952 McCormick House, which is “the cornerstone of EAM’s collection,” says Gibbs.

“Playboy originated in Chicago, so we are happy to bring it home,” says Gibbs.

And this summer, EAM also will host the “New American Paintings: Midwest Edition” exhibition. EAM’s curator Staci Boris says that the show will feature 40 artists from eight Midwest states. The work will showcase “the incredible variety of approaches to contemporary painting and includes everything from photorealist portraiture to sculptural work,” says Boris.

He leaves the viewer with freedom and calm, a sense that everyone can enjoy spring in Paris, quietly floating and reaching toward wishes.

Van Gogh has captured light and time with brilliant paints. Blues and greens dance boldly in their magic square that carries them toward eternity.

We enter the Art Institute from streets of Chicago, an amalgam of all colors and classes, where Spring pleasures are free to us all.

In 2014, Fortier’s poem, “A Chicago Van Gogh,” won a prize in the Chicago Art category through nonprofit organization Poets and Patrons of Chicago. She has taught at several Chicago-area colleges, such as Loyola University and North Central College in Naperville, and she currently teaches creative writing at the College of DuPage in Glen Ellyn. She is the past president of the Illinois State Poetry Society, and has won numerous awards in creative writing.

Vino ADVENTURES WONDERFUL WINE TRENDS FOR 2016

While cabernet sauvignon and chardonnay are still selling like crazy, there are a few new wine trends to consider. ¢ ROSÉ

TASTE: Gérard Bertrand Côte des Rosés, Sud de France The demand for Rosé wines has been exploding over the past few years. And, no surprise, the trend continues.

These Rosés are not your mom’s white zinfandels. Rosés are dry wines that are lovely to sip on their own but also pair extremely well with food. With very few exceptions, the juice inside a grape has no color of its own. All the color of either a red wine or a Rosé comes from skin contact.

The longer the contact between juice and skin, the deeper the color.

Most rosé wines are produced from red grapes and see very little skin contact, but just enough to produce an appealing pink color.

Rosé wines from southeast France are very popular. Most are relatively inexpensive and yet full of flavor.

Expect hints of strawberry, cherry, some citrus and watermelon.

¢ NORTHERN ITALIAN WINES

TASTE: Fontanafredda Serralunga d’Alba Barolo, Piedmont While Florence and Tuscany have been receiving most of our attention over recent years, Northern Italy and Piedmont, in particular, have been quietly upping their game.

The main red grape in Piedmont is Nebbiolo, and the king of Nebbiolo is Barolo. Barolo wines are made from Nebbiolo and are produced in seven different towns within Piedmont. Barolo is known for its structure and aging ability. It’s similar to Pinot Noir (though not in taste) in that it’s a difficult grape to grow. Barolo is very light in color, but is a full-bodied, dry red wine with tannins and high acidity. Its most prevalent aromas and flavors are violets, roses, truffles, tobacco and licorice. It’s not inexpensive, but it’s delicious.

Nothing can be added. Many feel that this is just not practical and leaves too much room for error, but – nonetheless –there’s a growing demand for more natural wines with less manipulation.

Fashion AT THE AIRPORT

Jenny McCarthy’s new line to hit the runway

T

his month, planes won’t be the only thing hitting the runway at the DuPage Airport and Flight Center.

Fashion at the Airport, a fundraiser that will feature the fashion line of radio and TV personality Jenny McCarthy, will take place at 7 p.m. Saturday, April 23, at the airport, 2700 International Drive, West Chicago.

The event is presented by Geneva-based Exceptional Events by Shuki Moran, who has planned numerous events for McCarthy. It will benefit Fox Valley Food for Health, an organization that teaches teens to make healthy, organic meals that are then delivered – for free – to people fighting cancer.

“It is the only fundraiser where people aren’t

going to be harassed to buy auction tickets or anything,” Moran says. “You just buy the one ticket and you come and have fun.”

This year’s event is expected to be bigger than last year’s and can accommodate more guests.

However, Moran cautioned that “People from Chicago and even Canada have already been buying tickets because they heard that actress and radio host Jenny McCarthy will be there presenting her new fashion line,” he says. “I’m concerned that everyone will wait until the last minute, because – last year – people were pissed that we sold all 120 tickets and they couldn’t come.”

Of the event venue, Moran says that he plans to utilize the space instead of changing it completely.

“I’m going to combine the hangar with the fashion,” he says. “I’m going to use some of the private jets with the fashion show and the event afterwards. The runway is going to be covered with white vinyl and be lined with private jets. I

want it to be one piece together – the event and the hangar.”

Moran plans to use the color white in the venue design because it’s clean, bright and summery, but he hopes attendees will use the show as an opportunity to be creative with what they’re wearing.

“The dress code is dress to impress,” he says.

“You don’t have to wear white. Dress wild and weird. I want you to be part of the fashion. I want people to make statements in what they’re wearing.”

Moran says that he wants everyone to feel as if they’re at a first-class event in New York, beginning at the moment guests arrive. Before walking the white-vinyl runway, he says, “We’re going to have valet parking for everybody from 5 p.m. until 2 a.m.in the morning. Everyone comes to the front door and it’s all included in the price.

I want people to feel as if they’re getting great service.”

Although it’s natural to fear such a major change, odds are that this milestone will be a positive experience – especially since you are involved. Here are some ways you can help your parent make the transition before and after the move.

Lori Wrzesinski dedicates her life’s work to assist area youth

By MELISSA RUBALCABA RISKE Lori Wrzesinski knows first-hand that lessons from childhood can have a lifelong impact.

When she was 8 years old, she realized she wanted to help others after watching the Jerry Lewis telethon for the Muscular Dystrophy Association.

“I remember feeling bad that there were kids who couldn’t run around and play like me, so I started doing my own fundraising,” Wrzesinski says. “I was 8, and God put in my heart this desire to help people who are vulnerable.”

“As public relations director, she’s creating collaborative partnerships within the community by reaching out to the many organizations, businesses, nonprofits, government … that comprise our community, in order to create service opportunities for youth, while supporting active, healthy lifestyles for seniors and others,” says Cathy Rager, a prevention specialist with the Township of Downers Grove.

“With the Peer Jury program first-time teen offenders can avoid going to court, but I think they learn more through the program than if they had gone to court,” Rager says.

Today, Rager works with Wrzesinski in the substance abuse prevention programs, aimed at helping students in middle and high school.

Recognizing a need in the community to address substance abuse issues, Wrzesinski received grant money to support the program and has been successful at maintaining the grant for the township.

Being a part of the township is more than a career for Wrzesinski. She grew up in Woodridge and is happy to still reside in her hometown.

She has seen the community transform over the years and is aware of the ever-growing need of its residents.

Wrzesinski was the co-founder of the township’s Peer Jury Program, which is a program built on the principles of the Balanced and Restorative Justice philosophy and is designed to provide a remedial method of dealing with selected juvenile offenders (under age 17). The program is about to celebrate its 16th anniversary.

For the last 29 years, she has been a member and lay leader at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Downers Grove, where she has taught vacation bible school, Sunday school, coordinated youth ministry programs and – today – she is the director of the church’s Sunday school and family ministry.

In partnership with local law enforcement, the program is for first-time teen offenders and is comprised of students from eight local high schools. More than 1,300 cases have been processed through the program.

“My faith is the core of who I am,” Wrzesinski says. “I feel I have been placed on this earth to work with the youth.”

Wrzesinski conducts the training and swearingin of all jurors. Over the years, the program has received several awards and has served as a model for other communities.

As a teen and young adult, Wrzesinski says that she faced her own emotional and personal struggles. In many ways, the struggles she once experienced now serve as inspiration. She has a steadfast desire to make sure other young people don’t feel the desperation and loneliness she once faced.

In her work with youth ministry, Wrzesinski says that she wants young people to understand that she will be there for them, supporting their struggle.

Wrzesinski continues to challenge herself, too. When she’s not helping others, she enjoys spending time on the dance floor.

She started taking ballroom dancing lessons as a form of recovery after fracturing both of her legs, and is even considering participating in an upcoming dance competition.

“I decided I’m going to make time to take care of myself, because I can do more for people if I am healthy,” Wrzesinski says.

KERRY LEIBOWITZ | Glen Ellyn

A statistician and social science research methodologist by training, Kerry Leibowitz of Glen Ellyn has always been captivated by the landscape, from its broadest vistas to its most minute details.

“I’m not entirely certain why, but I’ve always been drawn to and felt a kinship with the landscape and that continues to this day,” he says, adding that 95 percent of his work comprises landscape photography.

Leibowitz has been photographing the North American landscape for roughly 20 years, using both film and, since 2003, the digital format.

“Kootenay Plains Sunset” was taken in late September 2014 in what is known as David Thompson Country – a mostly uninhabited, provincially protected region of Alberta in the Canadian Rocky Mountains, east of Banff National Park.

“The location exudes the dual benefits of the jaw-dropping beauty endemic to the Canadian Rockies and a degree of solitude that’s comparatively difficult to experience elsewhere in the region,” he says.
