Editor’s Note Is it Spring yet? While we continue to thaw from winter’s frigid days, we can’t help but look ahead to the traditions of spring – planting flowers, Easter egg hunts, and the inevitable home projects. In the March edition of Suburban Life Magazine, we take inspiration from the historic homes in our communities, “step” inside the doors of houses steeped in nostalgia, and chat with the folks who live there about their passion for older homes and the highs and lows of owning a historic home. 150 NUTTAL ROAD, RIVERSIDE Aberdeen Marsh-Ozga and her husband, Tim, had been searching for a historic house, and when their realtor brought them to Nuttall Road in Riverside they found the perfect spot to call home. “When we pulled up to the home both of our mouths dropped open,” Marsh-Ozga says. “We fell in love immediately.” The couple and their three school-aged children live in a home designed by Frank Lloyd Wright in 1904 and completed around 1907. The prairie-style home is a national and local landmark. While locating a Wright home was a dream-come-true for the couple, the house was in need of work. “There were leaks in places that should not have been leaking,” Marsh-Ozga says. “We said ‘this is going to be a 20year project.’”

The couple bought the home in 2001 and has filled the passing years with projects to preserve, rehabilitate and care for the home. They have tackled some renovations, making sure to take care to keep the integrity of the home. One of the first projects was bringing the electrical wiring and plumbing up to code and current standards. They also restored the master bathroom, using the original tub and sink. Marsh-Ozga says it’s important to be “historically sympathetic” with the renovations. For example, they opted to use plaster to repair walls, which is the original material used, instead of the more common and less expensive option of drywall. “We’ve definitely done our homework,” Marsh-Ozga says.

-Continued from page 9 For some projects Marsh-Ozga has overseen the work, while in other projects they’ve brought in professionals, including architects who specialize in historic restoration. They’ve been able to keep the home’s radiator heating system. “We love it and the system works beautifully,” she says. Her love of historic homes extends beyond her own doors as she is a member of the Riverside Historic Preservation Commission. As a homeowner, Marsh-Ozga says she appreciates how the commission serves to help residents review plans and modifications. “The process is not something to be afraid of,” Marsh-Ozga says. “It is making sure to have another set of eyes looking over a proposal.” She and her family have enjoyed learning about their home and its history, as well as the history of many other historic structures in Riverside.

SPRING AVENUE, LAGRANGE The three-story, 5,200-square foot Norman Tudor-style home is on the market with an asking price of $1.495 million. “This property is one of the most historically significant homes in the area, with a perfect blend of classic style and modern convenience,” said Kerri Mahon, the home’s listing agent. “The original layout of the house is what preserves its historical integrity, while the renovations make it suitable for a modern lifestyle.” Mahon said it was the home’s unique mix of modern upgrades and town history that instantly drew her to the home. The home features six bedrooms, one of which is a spacious master suite, according to the listing. An additional seven baths, a large kitchen with built-in breakfast bench and table, also comes with a front parlor room and flanking fireplaces. The outdoor area is completed with a brick patio and porch.

The home originally was built for Mary Cossitt Lyman by her husband, D.B. Lyman, a local developer and the first attorney of La Grange, according to Coldwell Banker. Lyman, along with his brother-in-law Charles Lay – who also married another of F.D. Cossitt’s daughters – bought the land where the home sits, as well as much of the surrounding area, spanning from Kensington to Brainard avenues and from 47th Street to the Railroad tracks. In fact, many homes in the area were developed by Lyman, Mahon said. Much of that area now is considered La Grange’s historic district, according to Mahon. Mary Cossitt Lyman selected the property, now 133 S. Spring Ave., for the site to build the home. D.B. Lyman also donated money to build La Grange’s Stone Avenue train station, in hopes of spurring continued development in the area. The train station sits only blocks away.

“It was really very smart of him to do that,” Mahon said. Like the Stone Avenue train station, for which a major renovation was completed in 2014, the Tudor-style home has seen its share of modernization as well. The home features Gothic detailing and was updated to the current Tudor style in the 1920s. It was completely rehabbed again in 2000 by VonDrasek Builders. New plaster walls were installed at that time, as well as an attached three-car garage. The home includes its own guest suite located above the garage, which was completed with a full kitchen, laundry, living and dining room. If purchased, the home will also include a set of original plans for the home and other historical documents. You could even store them in the hidden safe that was built into one of the walls when the home was first constructed in 1875.

Transform that drab basement into an underground marvel By HANNAH PETERSON For many homeowners the basement holds boxes of Christmas decor, stores a variety of bric-a-brac, hot wheels collections and arts and crafts supplies, and might even serve as temporary housing for a returned home college graduate. Regardless of the current contents, it likely isn’t being used to its full potential. “Homeowners want a basement that looks and feels like an extension of their home above,” says Steve Sobkowik, owner of Oakley Home Builders, located in Downers Grove. Sobkowik has been in the business for more than 10 years, advises homeowners not be hasty when it comes to decisions about basement space. “Home owners should not be in such a hurry to finish their basements once they move in. Take your time and decide what your home is lacking, what you “wish” you could have, and then we’ll make sure to give you the biggest bang for your buck,” says Sobkowik. At Oakley Home Builders, an average basement remodels at anywhere between $40-100,000, depending on each clients budget and taste. “It all depends on how elaborate the homeowner wants to go,” says Sobkowik. Once the walls and floors are finished, any additional trim or unique design gives the room that edge, and personal taste of the homeowner. Accent walls are a great launch pad for ideas. “Stonework and masonry are the most common materials for such a feature,” says Sobkowik. Furthermore, though large open living space and home theaters are always popular, lately Sobkowik’s clientele has leaned more towards home gyms with mirrors creating the accent wall feature. “Basically, the basement is no longer the place to send your kids when company is over, now it’s the place to enjoy with your company,” adds Sobkowik.

Tips to consider for basement remodeling BUILT IN STORAGE Your walls are bare, so now is the perfect opportunity to add built in cabinetry and shelving. It will be a great place to keep the things you already store in the basement, without taking over the rest of the finished space.

LIGHT AND BRIGHT Bright color accents on walls and in décor, along with glass panel interior doors can bring much needed brightness into a traditionally drab basement space

CARPET TILES Cold concrete floors can be warmed up with the addition of carpet tiles, which are growing in popularity. It’s a great for a basement because single tiles easily can be easily replaced if damaged or stained. Waterproof options are available as well.

PAINTED CEILINGS To conceal the ductwork and pipes in your basement ceiling, you might be inclined to put in a common drop ceiling, or even drywall. But a lot of basements come up short, and those options can leave your finished room feeling vertically challenged. Consider leaving the ceiling exposed and use a sprayer to paint it with a color of your choice. This is especially effective in rooms finished with a lofty, industrial style. hen it comes to purchasing a newly-built home, it is important to consider all possible building options. And if that home is a custom build, the sky really is the limit in terms of what to include at construction. Even in a semi-custom built home, builders often offer sheet after sheet of options. How do you decide what to add at build and which can wait until later?

“We always talk to our clients about how to spend money today to benefit you down the road,” said Steve Sobkowiak, one of the founders and owners of Oakley Home Builders, based in Downers Grove.

In terms of selecting a lot, Garry advises his clients to look into the water runoff and grading, as well as how the house is situated compared to the homes around it.

arch is time to celebrate St. Patrick’s Day, take that Spring Break trip and . . . focus on the health of your eyes? It’s true – March is “Save Your Vision” month and aims to increase awareness regarding good eye care. Organized by the American Optometric Association (AOA), the main focus of this campaign is to encourage more people to go for regular eye exams. With computers becoming an everyday part of people’s lives, the risk of eye strain and damage is higher than before. MAKE TIME FOR AN EYE EXAM According to Mark Skowron, O.D, optometrist at Skowron Eye Care in Elmhurst, it’s important to have eye exams throughout your life. “People should have examinations yearly to ensure good ocular health,” he said. According to him, eye exams can reveal: • Lazy eye or amblyopia. Dr. Skowron said it’s important to have an eye exam by the age of 3 to check for this condition. “If it is not treated by 10 years of age, it can become a permanent visual deficiency where 20/20 vision cannot be achieved with glasses or contacts,” he said. • Glaucoma which causes the loss of one’s peripheral vision and eventually can cause complete blindness, if left untreated.

• Macular degeneration which usually occurs at 60 years of age and above. “This causes the loss of one’s central vision and can be controlled if caught early enough,” Dr. Skowron said. • Retinal detachment which can occur at any age and can cause blindness if not treated in time. • Cataracts which everyone will get if they live long enough. Dr. Skowron explained that these occur because of the UV rays of the sun. “Just as a newspaper turns yellow if left out in the sun, so do the lenses in your eye after 60 to 70 years of sun exposure,” he said. Good, UV-blocking sunglasses can help to delay this development. • The source of headaches which Dr. Skowron said is often due to nearsightedness, farsightedness, astigmatism or a focusing deficiency or imbalance. • Other general health issues that can be spotted in an eye exam are: diabetes, hypertension, cancer, multiple sclerosis, stroke, Sjogren’s Syndrome, Irritable Bowel Syndrome, Toxemia of pregnancy, Systemic Lupus, Sarcoidosis/TB, AIDs and Syphillis. Of course, the eye care professional refers a patient with any of these conditions to the appropriate specialist for treatment.

TAKE A BREAK FROM COMPUTERS Today, computers are everywhere – at work, at home and even on the train or bus on your commute. Looking at computer monitors can cause eye dryness and eyestrain. Dr. Doherty suggests: • taking regular breaks. “Look at distant objects every 30 minutes or so for 30 seconds.” • getting specialized prescription computer lenses from your eye care professional. They can filter out lower wavelength/higher energy blue light to reduce fatigue and glare. • making sure you have good lighting with no glare coming off the screen. FOCUS ON YOUR DIET Eating healthy foods is good for your whole body, including your eyes. Dr. Skowron said, “Everyone thinks that carrots (Vitamin A) are the main nutritional need of the eye but actually it has been shown that dark greens, like spinach and kale, provide lutein which has been found to provide the most nutritional value to the eye.” PREVENT INJURIES: • At Home and Work – According to Dr. Skowron, you should always wear safety glasses if you are drilling or sanding metal or wood and whenever you mow the lawn or trim bushes.

Safety experts, however, believe the right eye protection could lessen the severity or even prevent 90% of these injuries. Pizza Pleasures Pizza is a staple in my house, as it was when I was in college, as it was when I was a child. For a commuter, the ability to stop for a slice or bring a whole pizza home for dinner is a mid-week necessity! Here are three of our favorite stops along the rails, whether you’re headed home, or catching a bite on the way into the city for an evening out. FIRST STOP – CALIENDO’S IN WINFIELD (located one block up N. Winfield Rd on the corner where it meets with High Lake Rd.) This pizzeria is very big, kid and parent friendly, with darts, arcade games, even a jukebox inside. The floor to ceiling windows offer a natural light making the space open and inviting. All pizzas are made fresh daily using only the highest quality ingredients, then baked with a golden crust. With the option to customize or to try one of the specialty pies, I can see where it get’s this reputation. Beyond pizza, Caliendo’s menu is enormous with burgers and sandwiches, plus steak and seafood entrées all at very reasonable prices. It’s diverse beer, wine, and martini menu get this place packed on the weekends, so make sure to come early and save a seat! SECOND STOP – FIRE + WINE IN GLEN ELLYN (located just one block north up Main street from the train tracks) The moment I walked in, the words “rustic” (what with the exposed brick and wood fire oven in view), and “cozy” come to mind. The bar is right when you walk in, with the dining room to your left. Looking at the menu, the Neapolitan wood fired pizza grabs attention. These Italian delights come in thick or thin crust, with the option of a gluten free crust! In fact, both their pizza and their pasta dishes can easily be made gluten free, as the owners of Fire + Wine want no family member to be left behind! The rest of the dinner menu boasts of many Italian

food favorites paired with an extensive wine and beer list for a fun evening out! As you approach the counter to order, it hits you, that sensational smell of tomato and basil. The menu has over a dozen predetermined topped pizzas, with the option to build your own 12 inch pizza, if you so choose. My sister and I went hog-wild with our creation, tons of toppings both meat and veggie, with three cheeses. It was delectable! As we digested, my eyes could not help but wander. I noticed the piles of logs stacked ready to fill the oven, the abstract paintings on the wall to add some more color cohesion, and then settled on perusing the rest of their menu – soups, salads, and sandwiches all with their own flare. Moreover, they had a small list of craft beers whose lineup changes month to month! My sister and I were very happy with our experience here and would recommend it to anyone!

Like your eggs less obvious? Suzzette’s specialties include crepes, soufflés, crème brulee, and custards. “On my recent trip to France, I enjoyed an egg poached in red wine with winter ratatouille. This will be appearing on our menu soon.”

“They are a huge part of Irish cuisine,” he says. “We use them in half a dozen of our dishes here and utilize them in different ways by boiling, scrambling or frying them.”

If you’re looking to fit your fancy for eggs at home, Hesik suggests you poach them directly over sautéed spinach, shallots & mushrooms.

Diners can enjoy the traditional Irish Breakfast or the Scotch Eggs early in the day, take in a Caesar Salad, or a Forty Shades of Green Salad, for lunch or dinner, and the Top ‘O’ the Morning Burger anytime of day.

Look for these stalwart vineyards the next time you visit your favorite wine store: DAOU Vineyards and Winery Davou is a 212-acre vineyard located in the high hills of the Adelaida district of western Paso Robles. They are known for their Cabernet Sauvignon. Find their 2013 vintage. It has smooth texture, a rich depth and an exhilarating flavor of black currants.

JUSTIN Vineyards and Winery When Justin first planted Cabernet Sauvignon grapes in the Santa Lucia Mountains, Paso Robles wasn’t even on the wine lover’s map. Thirty-five years later, Justin is recognized as the pioneer of award-winning Bordeaux-style wines on California’s Central Coast. The Bordeaux-style, Isoceles, is globally recognized on a yearly basis.

Hope Family Wines Hope arrived in Paso Robles in 1978 and is dedicated to sustainable farming. The family is known for the following brands: Liberty School, Treana, Candor, Troublemaker and Austin Hope. For the budget-conscious, look for the Liberty School Cabernet Sauvignon. The Austin Hope brand boasts rich Syrahs and beautifully crafted Grenaches. They range from $40-$50 per bottle.

Varietals Paso Robles has warm days, cool nights and typically, late rainfalls. These conditions make for a longer growing season and grapes have more hang time compared to other AVAs. The resulting wines are generally packed with more fruits and lower acidity. For example, a Paso Robles Cabernet Sauvignon is less tannic than one coming from Napa Valley. It is usually medium-bodied with ripened black fruits. Likewise, white wines like Viogniers and Chardonnays from Paso Robles have low acidity and are fruit-driven with tropical notes. ROUILLE: Since March is National Sauce Month, I thought it fitting and timely to share this classic recipe for Rouille (rhymes with phooey). A rich and a spicy take on mayonnaise, this intense sauce is traditionally associated with Bouillabaise and commonly served with fried fish, seafood and fish-based soups, but it also works well with veggies, pork, sandwiches and wraps or – one of my favorites, as a dip for baguettes. At Waterleaf, we pride ourselves on using only the freshest ingredients and on providing a menu of simple yet meticulously and artfully prepared offerings that truly bring out the distinctive flavors of the ingredients. This recipe provides a perfect example of that. Quick and easy to make, this sauce will add a delightful and distinctive Mediterranean edge to your dishes and make a flavorful and flexible addition to your repertoire. Make sure to use the freshest possible ingredients, particularly the garlic, for achieving the best results of this savory and tasty treat. While some Rouille recipes call for breadcrumbs, I prefer the smoother consistency and gluten-free alternative provided by using a boiled potato.

INGREDIENTS FOR FILLING: • ¼ cup Dijon mustard • 2 tbsp lemon juice • 2 tbsp red wine vinegar • ¼ cup pureed garlic • 4 egg yolks

• 1 boiled potato, skin on, grated on a box grater • Pinch of paprika • 2 pinches ground saffron • 3 cups olive oil • Salt and white pepper to taste

o begin, blend all the ingredients except the olive oil in a mixer using the whisk attachment. Once the ingredients are evenly mixed, run the mixer on high and add the oil in a thin stream, going slow and steady. Adding the olive oil this way is especially important; if you don’t, the mixture will break and you will have to start over. Scrape the mixture from the sides of the bowl as necessary and continue processing until the mixture is smooth and creamy. Finally, add salt and pepper to taste. This recipe will result in about 4 cups of sauce, but it will keep well in the fridge for up to a week.

For the best results, prepare this sauce a day in advance and store it in the fridge overnight. This will allow the saffron to bleed, resulting in more intense flavor and color. After it has chilled overnight, stir the sauce before serving and you will see the color go from a pale, light orange to a robust bright orange as the saffron is dispersed and evenly blended.
