LOCAL NONPROFITS TRIM TREES for Cantigny holiday event

he Robert R. McCormick Museum at Cantigny Park invites visitors to a special holiday attraction honoring Colonel McCormick’s philanthropic legacy.

Beginning Tuesday, Nov. 25, the McCormick Museum will feature seven “Community Trees,” each decorated for Christmas by a different local nonprofit organization. The area charities were invited to participate because their missions involve issues or causes that were important to Robert McCormick during his career and life at Cantigny.

“We’re delighted to offer this program for a fifth year, and to have provided support for 35 local charities so far,” said Diane Gutenkauf, director of the McCormick Museum. “The trees help raise public awareness for the organizations and generate funding for their important community programs. Besides, we enjoy decorating the museum and commemorating Colonel McCormick’s philanthropic spirit makes it all the more meaningful.”

Each participating organization will receive a $2,500 grant from the Robert R. McCormick Foundation. They also collect 100 percent of any donations made by museum visitors, all of whom are encouraged to vote for their favorite tree. The agency whose tree gathers the most votes will receive an additional $2,500. The Foundation commits $20,000 annually to the program.

FRIENDS FOR THERAPEUTIC EQUINE ACTIVITIES, WINFIELD Providing therapeutic equestrian activities for people with disabilities.

WE GROW DREAMS GREENHOUSE AND GARDEN CENTER, WEST CHICAGO Providing people with disabilities the opportunity to lead fulfilling lives and to train and work in a supportive, safe and caring environment.

The trees creatively decorated by these seven organizations will be positioned throughout the McCormick Museum, with one tree in the Gold Theatre and six on the first floor.

For the fifth consecutive year, Phillip’s Flowers & Gifts will design and decorate the grand 18-foottall tree in Freedom Hall, Colonel McCormick’s historic library.

LOAVES & FISHES COMMUNITY PANTRY, NAPERVILLE Providing food and leadership in the community by uniting and mobilizing resources to empower people to be self-sufficient.

McCormick Museum hours in November and December are 10 am to 4 pm, Tuesday-Sunday, with visits by free guided tour. In addition, the museum will host a special Open House from 5 to 8 pm during Cantigny’s Celebrate the Season Holiday Festival on Saturday, Dec. 6.

Local businesses take the hassle out of home holiday light displays

aperville resident Scott Amundsen’s holiday tradition has been to go out on Christmas Eve and check out holiday lights.

Prior to 2012, he had decorated his home at 3111 Wolfe Court with traditional Christmas lights.

During his holiday light excursion in 2010, he decided he wanted to go bigger.

This year’s show began on Thanksgiving and will run through the holidays. It will run nightly from about 5 p.m. until 10 p.m. on weekdays and 5 p.m. until 11 p.m. on weekends. Be sure to tune to 88.5 FM. The show includes roughly 16 songs and lasts about 45 minutes. It runs on a loop all night.

he holiday season is in high gear in Downers Grove, ushered in the day after Thanksgiving by a well-attended tree-lighting ceremony and three-day Gingerbread Festival. Santa Claus, transported by a fire truck, even made a brief early appearance.

But that’s only the beginning. Residents and visitors will find multiple holiday-related activities lined up to continue the early momentum.

“Local businesses – shops and restaurants – are decked out in holiday finery and offering special promotions,” says Erin Enezia, marketing director for Downtown Management Corp., which advocates a strong central business district.

-Continued from page 19 The West Suburban Humane Society (WSHS) is a volunteer-based, animal welfare organization that was founded in 1972 as a lost and found referral service. Providing housing for up to 25 dogs and 60 cats at a time, WSHS operates at full capacity at all times with animal care and adoptions being provided by 3 full-time and 6 part-time employees and numerous volunteers. The facility is open to the public six days a week.

The cats and dogs arrive at WSHS from many sources. Impoundment facilities and the public bring dogs and cats of all ages that have been abandoned, abused, injured, neglected and orphaned. A dedicated volunteer base and the retained service of several veterinarians has allowed us to save the lives of and place more than 600 homeless animals each year into new homes.

Every animal that is brought to the shelter receives whatever type of veterinary care is needed, including surgery and hospitalization for trauma cases, long-term care and medication for viral and bacterial infections, and treatment of parasite infestations such as heartworm. Orphaned kittens and puppies as well as the infirm receive loving care in our Temporary Care Homes until they are ready for adoption.

In addition to facilitating adoptions, the WSHS continues to reunite lost animals and their families by maintaining a database with information on more than 33,000 pets and their owners, and by providing free pet identification tags to all pet owners.

According to Teddi Krochman, LCSW, director of behavioral health services at Elmhurst Memorial Hospital Center for Health, “If you are in a depressed mood most of the day and have lost interest in normal activities and relationships for more than two weeks, you should be seen by a physician to rule out clinical depression which needs to be treated with medications and talk therapy.”

f you have good hearing, you likely take it for granted. If you don’t, you may not even realize how much you’re missing.

Susan Rogan, a certified audiologist, sees it as her responsibility to counsel and assist all patients and determine the absolute best hearing solution for both the level of their loss and the demands of their lifestyle.

“Every patient I meet answers some questions,” she explains. “What is your goal? What is your lifestyle? Do you play sports? Go to the theater? Enjoy book club?

Have grandkids? I hear people say they don’t need a hearing aid, or don’t need an expensive one because they aren’t that socially active. But what they don’t realize is that the hearing loss has caused them to retreat. People get embarrassed when they can’t hear, when they have to ask for things to be repeated, can’t keep up with the conversation, or respond inappropriately.”

Today’s advances have not come without tribulation. “In the 1970s, hearing aids were taboo, nobody wanted them,” Rogan explains. By the late 1980s they began to be prescribed, but many were not good fits, and the technology had not advanced.

Without the right fit, patients remained dissatisfied, she says.

“Most third-party payers wouldn’t cover the device, or even the appointment,” Rogan says. “People were going without and suffering daily as they missed conversations with friends and loved ones, and began to retreat from social situations.”

Early in my career, an 81-year-old patient came in and wanted top of the line hearing aids. “This is likely the last hearing aid I’ll ever buy” he told me. So he wanted the best. I tried to advise him down in price, as I couldn’t understand why at this stage of his life, he’d want to spend so much. But he insisted.

So we fitted him with the devices, and he treated them well. Kept them clean, got them serviced well. Ten years go by, far longer than they were expected to last, when he returns, and neither unit is operating. Now, they were way beyond their lifespan. They weren’t even in production anymore. And it’s the week of Thanksgiving – we couldn’t get them repaired in time for the holiday, or even get them replaced. I told him the best I could do was find a way to get them repaired on Monday, after the holiday.

“I get to see my daughter one day a year,” he tells me. “And I am 91-years-old…I may not see her again.”

I had some demos of some state-of-the-art devices on hand, so I let him take those for the weekend, so he could enjoy the holiday with his daughter and her family. Again, it was way more than I ever would have suggested he need.

Fast forward to Monday and he’s calling me, telling me he loves the hearing aids and wants to keep them. Next thing I know he’s in my office, at my desk.

“I never have heard my family this way,” he says. “I don’t care if I have three more months…this is how I want to hear.”

I decided right then and there, I would never make a financial decision for my clients. I would give them all the appropriate options and allow them to decide for themselves which option best fit all their needs.

Christmas:

TIME TO CRANK IT UP. Perhaps it is because I have barely gotten over the fact that Christmas decorations started popping up before Halloween. Perhaps it is because only a few weeks ago I sold or donated most of the toys the kids got just last Christmas. It could be that my Jack-o-Lanterns hadn’t even rotted before Lite FM started playing Holiday songs, or because I cannot stand hearing the words, “OOOH, Mom! I

want that for Christmas!” every three seconds.

Whatever the case may be, I have a serious case of the Christmas Cranks.

It started immediately after my kids’ birthdays in the spring. Once the onslaught of toys was collected from their birthday party, they started making yet another list of more stuff they wanted.

As we approached September, I felt it was finally appropriate for them to start a Christmas list (since it isn’t unheard of for me to start Christmas shopping in October.) It also gave me the opportunity to squelch their comments simply by saying, “Put it on the list.” Every time my kids sit down to watch Nickelodeon, the list grows by five items. There are certain things I simply tell them Santa does not bring, mainly because I know that “Santa” will be selling that item at next year’s garage sale for less than half of what I paid for them.

It really would make it a heck of a lot easier to explain that Santa/Mom has a budget and that asking for a Nintendo 3DS from Santa and an iPad Mini from Mom and Dad just isn’t going to fly.

Recently, I’ve seen posts on Facebook about nongift ideas for kids like zoo memberships, trips to the children’s museum, donating to charity, etc.

Don’t get me wrong; we do many of these things and I wish it were that simple. We are diligent in our efforts to teach our children from an early age that not everyone is as fortunate as they are. We have donated used toys as well as brand new toys to families in need. I point out to them that most of the items on the giving tree at church aren’t toys because those in need don’t ask for things they want, they ask for things they need. That doesn’t even scratch the surface if you throw in the catalogs for websites and mail-order retailers.

I know I cannot put blinders on my kids from October thru January as all the advertisements, decorations and major marketing blitzes ramp up. But I have no shame

I would literally have to hide them in a cave, deprive them of any and all television, keep them home from school at least a month after Winter break to avoid facing the inevitable question, “What did you get for Christmas?” Furthermore, I could never, ever take them to the store with me. Even Walgreens is littered with “As Seen On TV” gifts that have my kids begging for any and all stuffed animals that can be worn, light up or used to smuggle contraband.

Someday I will miss the magic of them believing in Santa, but in the meantime I kind of want to give “Santa” a piece of my mind about this fantasy he plants in children’s heads about getting whatever the heck they want. He makes it look so easy with all those perky elves tinkering away making simple toys for good boys and girls. I think he should be the one to actually hunt down the best deal on Zoomer the Dog before they start going for $200 on eBay, only to have it sit in the corner of the kids’ rooms uncharged and lifeless. He should be the one to sit at my garage sale next year and sell all the unwanted and barely used toys the kids HAD TO HAVE this year and haggle over a 12-inch talking My Little Pony that originally cost $45 to a woman who wants it for $3. He’d probably put his chubby finger next to his red nose and with a twinkle of his eye, disappear up the chimney.

FAIRY GRANDMOTHER Adrian Mary Charniak fights for rights of grandparents in illinois

L

ife can change in one tiny moment. Adrian Mary Charniak was busy working full time, volunteering in her community and church when her life was completely turned around by the addition of her grandson, Joey Nosal, in 1998. Minutes after meeting him, Charniak knew her role with Joey would be more than just a grandmother or as she preferred to be called, “Babi,” a nod to her Czech heritage.

Charniak loved her son Raymond, but knew he and his wife were not equipped to care for a child due to their own mental health issues. Charniak says she and her husband, Ron, knew they would need to step in and obtain guardianship of the child.

What they didn’t know was the road to obtaining guardianship would take years, 127 court appearances, a substantial financial commitment and days when the process would seem like an endless uphill battle.

“It was something we had to fight for,” Charniak says. “It was a long, long process.”

Today, Charniak is the proud “Babi” to six grandchildren and she and her husband are the sole guardians of Joey, a healthy and active 16-year-old whom she describes as loving, and a good kid.

“He’s really grown to be a fine young man,” Charniak says. “He’s very compassionate and always right there to help.”

Early in Charniak’s journey to guardianship, she discovered just how few rights grandparents have in the state of Illinois. She met other grandparents in similar circumstances of trying to care for and have access to their grandchildren. Charniak even traveled from her home in Riverside to Washington, D.C. to attend “Grand-Rallies” in support of grandparents’ rights.

Along the road of her own personal journey, Charniak became an advocate for others.

Anderson, also a grandmother helping to care for grandchildren, met Charniak at a grandparent support group in Chicago, and maintained a friendship through the years. Charniak wanted to create a program a little closer to home. She turned to her church, Trinity Community Church UCC in Berwyn. An active member for 33 years, Charniak has been a vital part of the church’s activities, from fundraisers to decorating and singing in the choir.

The Rev. Penny Taylor remembers when she first learned about Charniak’s work fighting for social justice and the rights of grandparents.

“She is a power house,” Taylor says.

In 2009, the council granted Charniak’s request and approved the Gift of Hope Grandparents and Others Raising America’s Children. Today, the group has more than 434 members. The program offers resources and a supportive atmosphere for meetings with others raising grandchildren.

Charniak takes the knowledge she gained from her journey to educate others, as well as offer support and comfort.

“I try to teach them to have strength so they can do what’s right for the child,” Charniak says. “Every one of my grandparents I have total respect for.”

Taylor says she is happy the church can provide a safe, consistent resource for grandparents raising grandchildren, as well as others including aunts and uncles who have stepped into challenging situations.

Whether she is helping fellow grandparents with questions or caring for the needs of her own family, including her mother, who is now in her 90s, friends describe Charniak as a devoted helper.

“It’s just fun to give back,” Charniak says. “You feel better about things, no matter how bad your day was.”

“She is a wealth of support and a lot of energy,” says Cheryl Anderson of LaGrange. “She’s just a wonderful person.”

hether it’s planned or unexpected; friends, family, neighbors, the boss, carolers, or Santa; be it a large gathering or small get together...people do more home entertaining during the holidays than any other time of the year, and it’s always nice to have something on hand to offer guests.

Christmas dinner in our family is usually some sort of beef. Whether it’s a standing rib roast or tenderloin, Bordeaux or California Cabernet are my choices. Both recently have had really wonderful vintages – 2009 in Bordeaux and 2012 in California. Whatever your budget it’s difficult to go wrong with wine from either region if you stick to those years.

New Year’s Eve calls for bubbles, bubbles, and more bubbles. There are so many to choose from. Prosecco from Italy. Cava from Spain. Sparkling wines from the United States. Champagne from France. One of our current favorites, which won’t break the bank, is a vintage prosecco called Ca’ di Rajo... creamy with tiny little bubbles. A small producer, but well worth seeking out.

Good neighbors and family are wonderful things to have so treat them to an easygoing, very drinkable red wine blend. These days you’ll find red wines made up of all sorts of different blends: Syrah with just about anything; likewise Tempranillo; Merlot with Cabernet and Syrah. One combo we think is great is Perlita’s Malbec/Syrah from Argentina--satisfies Malbec and Syrah drinkers alike.

What’s that you hear on the roof? I think Rudolph and the boys are a bit too young, and besides, Rudolph has to lead the sleigh all night!

Then there are those Elves. They work really hard all year, and it’s cold up at the North Pole! A big, rich Zinfandel would be the ticket--a rich, juicy red wine with a bit of spice on the finish. Try one from Dry Creek Vineyards or Ridge Cellars – two of our favorite producers.

And don’t forget the most important holiday drop-in …Santa! A little bit of port would be perfect with those homemade chocolate chip cookies you’ve left out and help keep Santa warm while delivering presents.

Cup-a-Joe to Go In my house, only when the coffee is poured can the day begin.

My parents are solid two cups a morning, whereas I’m more of a hot cocoa drinker than a java nut. But what makes me love coffee is its aroma. This sensational smell makes me feel like snuggling up by a fire, surrounded by family, reminding me of home. Taking the train every other day or so, I’ve had the fortunate opportunity to visit various towns and discover some of what the best coffee shops have to offer.

FIRST STOP – River City Roasters in Wheaton (located not even a full block north along Main Street from the station) When you walk through the door, you instantly smell the heavenly incense of coffee beans wafting in the air. As small batch artisan roasters, they are able to bring out the best of every flavor in just one cup, so you are never disappointed. Because they wish to source their products, they have taken it upon themselves to travel to the farthest reaches of Africa to bring us back some of the best beans available creating relationships with growers and aiding employment.

Though River City Roasters offers an eclectic list of java with beans from as far away as Ethiopia, Columbia, and Kenya, it also has chosen to provide seasonal options via lattes and espressos in honor of fall, such as a pumpkin latte and spice latte.

River City’s owners take pride in their brews and hope that you will be just as proud when you taste what they have to offer.

NEXT STOP – The Corner House in Lombard (located one block up N. Main Street and two blocks left down W. St Charles rd.) When you walk into this little corner coffee shop, decorated in yellows and browns, you notice the quaint and charming seating area around the fireplace, to your left; an area which

can also be transformed into a small stage for live music when events are booked. At the counter is an array of various pastries and can smell their coffee brewing in the back.

Their menu is quite extensive, with more coffee drinks and teas than I have ever seen made available at a local shop, both frozen and warm.

Sitting down with your cup, you can’t help but feel a sense of home.

This environment is very welcoming and friendly, serving as a place to meet and greet or read a book or get lost in your computer/tablet for an hour or two. Spread throughout are shelves and displays covered in jars of teas and coffee beans, available for purchase, to take some of this experience home with you until the next day!

LAST STOP – Pilot Pete’s Coffee & Treats in Elmhurst (located inside the Elmhurst train station) This coffee stand can be found directly at the center of the train station. Complete with bench and two bar table seating, this slightly hidden gem is a town favorite for their java morning fix. Open from 5-11:30 a.m., this stand provides various types of coffee both usual and seasonal. Most appreciated in the station that day was the speed and accuracy of the barista’s work.

Despite racing against the clock to get the commuters their coffee in time for their trains, the brew is surprisingly warm and fantastic! As I stood at the table by the counter, sipping my drink, I noticed the recent issue of Pilot Pete’s Morning Grind biweekly newsletter. Since some commuters, awaiting their trains so early in the morning, might not have grabbed a morning paper, this newsletter is a clever replacement, discussing local happenings and advertising local restaurants. It’s a fitting feature for this popular coffee stand!

After graduating from Illinois State University in art and design, artist Anne Hanley worked as an art director in multi-image and video production for educational training and national sales conventions. While raising her three daughters, Anne worked from her home studio mastering the centuries old art form of batik, altering the traditional materials to a more contemporary art form.

“I have reinvented the ancient art form of Batik and developed my own style using large bold strokes of color and wax. Using a tjaunting

tool or brush I render forms in hot wax and alternate layers of watercolor paint and wax until complete. The wax is carefully removed revealing layers of images. With this method, I have developed over 50 different works based on the Columbine flower and the narrative of music, water, trees, valleys, and houses.”

Anne has been a member of the Chicago suburban art community for 20 years, participating in a number of juried art fairs, galleries and exhibitions throughout the Midwest, selling her work in both the retail
