La Grange turns on the charm for its 22nd annual event

“He arrives in downtown like Mick Jaggar,” quips Nancy Cummings, executive director of the La Grange Business Association, which hosts the 22nd Annual Hometown Holiday on Saturday, Dec. 7 in downtown La Grange.

He’ll take a seat in the nostalgic third floor auditorium of Village Hall, to greet area children and hear their Christmas wishes.

Youngsters are asked to help fill Santa’s sack for the less fortunate by contributing a nonperishable food item for a local food pantry.

La Grange shops, restaurants and businesses will kick off the holidays with festive open houses and winter-themed activities. Musical entertainment will include the Lyons Township High School Madrigal Choir, strolling carolers and small group performances around the village by musicians from the Salt Creek Chamber Orchestra. Thousands are expected to join in the free holiday activities celebrating the magic of the season.

“The LGBA really is the pulse of La Grange,” says Cummings. “We are more than just party planners, but advocates for our small businesses and our residents. We consistently try to match our local sponsors with events our people enjoy and support.

And with some 6,000 expected to attend the 22nd Hometown Holiday, there’s no doubt this event fits that goal.

“Someone once told me we should change our name from LGBA to LGBF…for family,” says Cummings. “And that’s really how it feels.”

Celebrate the Season with festive holiday events The holiday season is a magical time for young and old.

Make a date for the family, or just a couple’s night out to one of many shows this season. Music, film, theater | there’s something for everyone here in the suburbs.

Seasonal holiday classic staged at Drury Lane A Christmas Carol, the beloved annual holiday tradition entertaining thousands of families each year, is offered onstage through December 21 at Drury Lane Theatre, 100 Drury Lane.

The hour-long Drury Lane production uses 14 of the most versatile actors in Chicago to bring more than 30 of the colorful Dickens characters to life.

Its the traditional story of Ebenezer Scrooge, a miserly old man who receives a Christmas Eve visit from the ghost of his old business partner, Jacob Marley, warning him to mend his ways.

During the night, three spirits appear before Scrooge showing him visions of Christmas Past, Christmas Present, and Christmas Future to reveal the results of his selfish life. Scrooge promises to redeem himself and vows to honor the spirit of Christmas with all his heart, spreading good cheer, kindness and generosity to everyone he encounters.

West Suburban Symphony presents Songs Of The Season Songs of the Season offers its audience a little sparkle and magic for the holiday season, courtesy of the West Suburban Symphony. The whole family will enjoy familiar carols, selections from Tchaikovsky’s beloved Nutcracker ballet, and traditional tunes arranged by Leroy Anderson and by Chip Davis of Mannheim Steamroller. Chicago composer Thomas Maslan will dazzle you as he performs as soloist in the world premiere of his Christmas Piano Fantasy with orchestra,

inspired by the melodies of medieval Gregorian chant and traditional English, French and Ukranian carols. And, of course, you can expect a jolly visitor from the North Pole.

The West Towns Chorus Presents “A Holly Jolly Christmas” This men’s four-part harmony chorus will once again be gracing the historic Tivoli Theatre stage for their annual holiday show. This year’s program is called “A Holly Jolly Christmas” and will feature traditional holiday favorites, as well as new songs. “A Holly Jolly Christmas” features Chicagoland’s West Towns Chorus with special guests Sweet Adelines Chorus, Midwest Crossroads Chorus, Chancel Bell Ringers, and the Tivoli pipe organ. A right jolly old elf Suburban Santa enjoys seasonal spotlight

He’s held the most coveted role in the world for more than 20 years.

Each winter, John Sullivan dons a fur-trimmed red suit, black boots and a fluffy white beard to enchant and charm Christmas lovers around the Chicago area as he becomes Santa from as early as August through December.

Sullivan’s journey to “becoming Santa” was unintended. In the 1980s he was responsible for coordinating the Pictures with Santa photo operation at a suburban shopping mall. When Santas were no-shows, he filled in and realized he loved the job. He soon became a regular in the red suit at Breakfast with Santa at Neiman Marcus in Oak Brook, and at a host of retail venues across the suburbs.

Sullivan relishes the outlandish requests that he’s gotten from children throughout the years.

“One year, a little boy told me he wanted a tarantula, and not one of the fake rubber ones, but ‘the real thing.’ His mother was behind him frantically shaking her head no,” he recalls.

“Recently a little boy told me he wanted a lump of coal. I asked if he’d been naughty and he said, ‘no, I just want a lump of coal because I think it would be cool.’”

Sullivan says he never promises anything other than “you’ll love what you find underneath the tree.”

There are memories that make him chuckle, and those that leave his heart full, he relays.

“What I love best about playing Santa frankly are the littlest children,” Sullivan says. “When they’re five or six, they are true believers and are really into Santa; really believing.

You can feel their love. They’re wonderful,” Area Santa Houses this season will include downtown Downers Grove at the corner of Main and Curtiss Streets, the Riverwalk in Naperville at Jackson Avenue and Webster Street, and Community Bank in Wheaton on Wheaton and Front Streets.

Ceremonies and celebrations including Santa will be the Old Fashioned Tree Lighting in Wilder Park in Elmhurst on December 5, A Holly Jolly Christmas Celebration featuring West Town Chorus on December 7 at Tivoli Theater in Downers Grove, and the Once Upon a Christmas in Lisle on December 7 in downtown Lisle. The jolly man in red also will participate in Sing-A-Long with Santa in Elmhurst at Fitz’s Spare Keys on December 14 and 21.

Among the most popular Christmas events are the Santa on the Polar Express rides held at various locations throughout the western suburbs. “The children can hardly stand the excitement when the train pulls into the North Pole and they see Santa and Mrs. Claus waiting there for them,” says Sullivan, who has participated in the Downers Grove ride.

“Once at a senior community, a woman with Alzheimer’s commented, “’I know who you are but can’t quite

Vicki Martinka Petersen enjoys taking long train rides through the western suburbs to her job as a media relations specialist for a health care association in Chicago. She believes Chicago isn’t the only fun destination along the train line and is sharing what the suburban train stops have to offer.

Holidays light up along the line During my commute this time of year, I enjoy looking out the train window to see the communities along the BNSF train line lit up from Christmas trees, wreaths and sparkling decorations hanging off streetlights. Many of these towns offer events to celebrate the holiday season, just steps from the station. Here is a sampling to get you started on a holiday season along the rails.

First stop | Holiday Magic at the Brookfield Zoo (exit at the Hollywood stop and walk a few blocks to the South Gate, www.brookfieldzoo.org). I first went to Holiday Magic in 2000 with my mom. Every year since, I have been blessed to share this holiday tradition with my husband, my family and good friends. One of Chicago’s largest holiday lights festival, Holiday Magic features more than one million twinkling lights, animated light displays, a new laser show and a new video light show. Other highlights include singing to the animals, Christmas trees decorated by area community groups and ice carving demonstrations.

Holiday Magic runs from 4 to 9 p.m. Saturdays and Sundays in December with an extended run Thursday, Dec. 26, through Tuesday, Dec. 31.

Second stop | Gingerbread Festival in downtown Downers Grove Friday, Nov. 29, and runs through Sunday, Dec. 1. (www.downtowndg.org).

This gingerbread-themed holiday event includes a Gingerbread Man Hunt and

photo opportunities with a Gingerbread Boy and Girl, all within walking distance of the Downers Grove Main St.station.

Youngsters can visit with Santa in his Gingerbread House from 1 to 4 p.m. Complimentary carriage rides will be offered on Sunday, Dec. 1, with boarding at 1028 Curtiss St. Following the festival, Santa will return for visits on Saturdays and Sundays in December through Dec. 22.

Gingerbread houses will remain on display throughout the season.

Last stop | “Build It Big” Bubble Bash at the DuPage Children’s Museum in Naperville (just south of tracks, 301 N. Washington St., www.dupagechildrens.org).

Remember as a kid trying to stay awake until midnight but most years you were lucky to make it until the ball dropped in Times Square? The DuPage Children’s Museum offers an alternative with its New Year’s Eve celebration featuring a countdown to noon. Youngsters can partake in three floors of bubble fun, including popping their way down a red carpet of bubble wrap. Music from Mr. Singer and the Sharp Cookies will complement the party atmosphere.

“Build It Big” Bubble Bash will be from 9 a.m. to noon Tuesday, Dec. 31. Registration is available on the museum’s website.

Motherhood … it takes a little faith. mass, where the kids are taken out and given lessons from the readings and scripture that were easier for them to understand. That’s where she made her own group of girl friends, and they just might start the very first “Junior Altar and Rosary Society.”

When she stays for the whole mass, she does the crossword puzzles, riddles and activities available for kids in the back of church with.

She dutifully connects the dots of the Holy family. She also is pretty good at connecting the proverbial dots about faith in God. She often tells us she loves God and He loves us. She explains why we should be good to people. She understands why we celebrate Christmas and knows that giving is better than receiving, no matter how cool the toys under the tree might be.

Every child is unique, I know. But I still can’t quite figure out how two children, raised it the same household, can be so different.

My daughter, Maddie, is my ruler-follower.

She even has been known to chime in, “I’m her angel!” when I am describing the two kids to other people. I have to make sure I don’t inflate her ego too much, since she certainly isn’t perfect all the time.

I also have to make sure I don’t give my son a complex, since often I am telling people stories about his relatively devilish behavior.

I have learned all too well that he always is listening, and picks up on most of what I am saying whether I think he’s paying attention or not.

But there also is something inherently different about my daughter and son that cannot be denied, especially when in comes to faith and religion. Despite the fact that both kids are raised with the same religious upbringing, morals and values, they could not be more different in the way they embrace our faith.

My daughter always has been a bit of a “church lady.” She enjoys dressing up for church | the singing, the stories and even kibitzing with people she knows in the vestibule after mass. Now that she’s older, she goes to the Children’s Liturgy during

Then, there’s Colin. While Maddie is writing “I LOVE GOD!” in her notebook , brought along to keep her occupied during the service, Colin is asking if they have WiFi at church and why the angels above the organ are blowing on plungers. I explain we don’t play on iPhones in mass and that they are trumpets not plungers, but he insists he is right. He then continues on to race his cars up and down the pew, and climb on my lap, periodically tossing in a “God is dumb” comment. Still, he usually sings along with the songs and just when I think he has found something in church that interests him, I realize he has switched the words to “God is poopy. God is pee-pee. Amen. Amen.”

When we recite the Lord’s Prayer, he remains silent the whole time until the last line, “… but deliver us from evil…” where he yells “EVIL!” as loud as he can.

He’s been kicked out of the daycare at church and they told me he should probably try going to Children’s Liturgy instead. When we have sent him, his sister usually comes back with a bad report. I’m still waiting for one of the Children’s Liturgy leaders to come up to the

A few weeks ago at church, he told me he didn’t believe in God because he couldn’t see him. I tried to explain that believing in something you can’t readily see is what having faith is all about. I compared it to Santa Claus, to which he replied, “I don’t believe in him either.”

The good news is he never stops asking questions throughout the entire mass. Every so often he hears words like “blood of life” and “Jesus was nailed to the cross” that particularly peak his interest, but at least I know he is listening.

One Sunday, when I thought he was more interested in his trucks than mass, the priest was giving his homily and at the end said our relationship with the Virgin Mary is comforting much like our relationship with our own mothers. The last line of his sermon was, “…just call mom.” To which Colin shouted, “MOM!”

After mass, I asked the priest if he had heard Colin and he said he hadn’t. I gave him a little background on Colin’s irreverent behavior and he responded, “Those are the people who become priests.”

Hmm. I kind of thought they were the kind of people who became convicts, so I guess we all need to have a little faith.

United Way of DuPage/West Cook County

The faith-based hunger relief organization provides specially formulated nutritionally balanced meals, served in schools, orphanages, and feeding centers to starving children around the world.

One of the largest and most widely known charitable organizations, the United Way, serves the region from the Chicago city limits west, and all of DuPage County, partnering with more than 70 local not-forprofits to raise funds and provide volunteers.

“Our goal is to eliminate hunger and instill compassion for God’s starving children,” says Denise Gallina, Developmental Advisor.

Volunteers work in pre-scheduled shifts to help pack the meals. It’s a great opportunity for families, Scout troops, school, workplace or church groups, sports teams, and more.

“Whether you’re four or 104, you can work side by side here. One thing I love to see is three or four generations of a family working together,” says Gallina.

Mobile packing events can be scheduled for very large groups. FMSC’s marketplace raises funds by selling great gifts, including jewelry, accessories, mugs and more, all made by artisans in the needy communities worldwide which the organization serves.

“Our mission is to leverage resources to meet the needs of the communities,” says David Cassel, Chief Professional Officer.

Cassel encourages residents to consider supporting United Way on Giving Tuesday™ Dec. 3, a national grass-roots event launched last year to create a national day of giving.

“After Black Friday and Cyber Monday, it’s a way to shift the focus back to helping others, either through financial donations or volunteering. We’ll be using the day to spotlight the work of the agencies we support, which really do make an impact across the region,” says Cassel.

The United Way currently is in the midst of its annual fundraising campaign, with a

goal to raises $6 million through workplace contributions and individual donations.

Residents can make a donation online at http://uw-mc.org/dwc Northern Illinois Food Bank Serving some 13 counties in Northern Illinois, the organization provides food for 800 feeding organizations, that include after school programs, senior programs, shelters and mobile food pantries.

“In our service area, 425,000 people face hunger every day, and one in five are children,” says Donna Lake, Communications Director. “Our two mobile pantries made 408 visits this year and served about 300 families each time,” says Lake.

Donate $15 to the Food Bank’s Backpack program, to provide a hungry child with a weekend’s worth of nutritious food. A $30 donation to Food Bank’s Holiday Meal Box program provides a family of eight with everything they need for a traditional holiday dinner, including turkey and sides.

Other programs assist seniors, low income families and more.

Flourishing Hinsdale holds tight to the historic, with an eye on the future

mpressive tree-lined streets, attractive parks and stately buildings paint a picturepostcard image of Hinsdale.

Flushing out the snapshot of the town where he serves as director of the Hinsdale Economic Development Commission, Timothy Scott says the prestigious municipality ranks in the top 1 percent of the wealthiest towns in Illinois.

Though the latest figures are still being updated, Scott says he wouldn’t be surprised if average household income now exceeds $200,000, compared to $180,000-plus recorded by the 2010 census. Unofficially, he pegs the village’s current population at “just shy of 17,000," versus the previously reported count of 16,816.

Meanwhile, real estate professionals say average single-family homes in Hinsdale currently fetch $1.45 million, with many commanding significantly higher sticker prices.

“We do a traditional tree lighting ceremony where Santa arrives on a fire truck accompanied by the village president,” Anderson says. Also offered, in partnership with the Economic Development Commission, are a Santa House on weekends and horse-drawn carriage rides.

Other chamber events include Uniquely Thursdays, a 10-week summer concert series featuring live music, food vendors and children’s games. Another big draw held the second weekend of June is the Hinsdale Fine Arts Festival, where a juried panel typically reviews the work of some 140 artists.

Having a downtown designated as a National Register Historic District has helped Hinsdale maintain a vibrant central commercial area.

Six individual Hinsdale buildings listed on the National Register of Historic Places are the Orland P. Bassett House at 329 E. Sixth St., the Robert A. and Mary Childs House at 318 S. Garfield Ave., Immanuel Evangelical Church at 302 S. Grant St., the Francis Stuyvesant Peabody House at 8 E. Third St. and the William Whitney House at 142 E. First St. The Hinsdale Public Library, whose roots go back to 1893, is housed in the Memorial Building, which was completed in 1929 and became its first permanent residence. Karen Kleckner Keefe, executive director, says the facility owns 101,635 books, 30,811 e-books and checks out 344,638 items. In addition, more than 14,000 people attend library programs every year.

The Hinsdale Historical Society runs the Roger & Ruth Anderson Architecture Center, which advocates for the preservation of Hinsdale's historical architecture and functions as an archive and resource.

There’s a lot of stability in the retail environment.

Among those with longstanding ties are Hinsdale News Agency, Hinsdale Furriers, Hinsdale Flower Shop, King-Keyser Specialty Sports, Kramer Foods and Hartley’s Cycle Shoppe Ltd. all from the 1950s.

Yet even as the flourishing 130-year-old west suburban town basks in its historic roots, it looks to the future.

“We certainly weren’t immune to the recession,” Scott says. “Like all municipalities, we wrestled with business attraction and retention. We are constantly looking for new tax-producing businesses, particularly those that would complement what we already have in town or fill voids.”

Anderson says the restaurant scene experienced turnover but is now “on the upswing,” with CiNe, Nabuki and Il Poggiolo joining such well-established institutions in town as Jade Dragon and Toni Patisserie and Café. Other new dining venues are anticipated to blossom in 2014.

Meanwhile, Adventist Hinsdale Hospital, the town’s largest employer, recently received approval for a cancer center on Ogden Ave., and the site is being prepared for construction.

Also moving ahead are plans for a half-block-long retail-and-office complex on east First St. that will be known as Garfield Crossing.

“A proposed redevelopment site for about 15 years, work on this spot is finally coming to fruition,” Scott notes, adding: “The new project will complement to downtown historic character. It will ‘read’ like five separate buildings and mimic the rhythm of our existing street mall. “ Plans are under way to demolish the former building on the site, with completion of the new two-story structure targeted within 14 months.

“Resolving that development challenge represents one of our biggest achievements in quite some time.”

Vintage fashion is a force majeure boomerang from days of yore. But before you pull out your entire ‘70s and ‘80s wardrobe and strut down Main Street, take a lesson from Josanne Rahning, Regional Beauty Manager for Mario Tricocci who can help to steer your fashion compass: “… think Hollywood stars! when you want to make a dramatic statement.” However, he has some great tips for more subtle vintage glamour for every day.

“Roll hair away from the face with a barrel curling iron. Curl the hair all in the same direction with a curling iron with a low side part. Then smooth through the top and keep curls at the bottom.”

Gialluisi advised, “Any woman can wear vintage inspired hair. What dictates a vintage look is the dress – you want something throwback and glamorous.”

And speaking of the dress, vintage style always has been a draw for weddings.

“I think the big statement clothing or jewelry is definitely nothing new, says Nicole Kalteux Kurz owner of The Dress, by Nicole in Wheaton. “Fashion is always about reinventing so that there is always some aspect from the past in today’s fashion but it might have a new twist on it.

“There is definitely a movement in bridal right now that’s kind of shabby sheik, vintage mod,” she continues. “I’d also say that vintage inspired accessories are very hot right now,” from headbands with side flourishes, belts and sashes.

“Almost everybody is doing some sort of embellished waist treatment be it an embellished band or a beaded ribbon.” Kurz says, “Gold has been on the back burner to silver but it’s coming back. Also, antique kind of metals like rose gold and copper metals.”

Edward Begeman, owner of Begeman’s Jewelers in Willowbrook knows all about antique metals, and big statement jewelry.

“Making a statement is something bold or loud or big –it’s not subtle,” he says. Maybe if it’s a big piece it will show more. Sure, some clothes or some dresses are more impressive than others, but that has to do with how you’re looking at it and what you’re trying to do.”

“Some people might wear vintage jewelry for every day casual or when they’re going out at night,” Begeman shares. “It depends on their mood or where they’re going. They might not even wear a vintage dress, or whatever. They might have a very up-todate outfit on but feel like wearing vintage jewelry.”

Give yourself the gift of healthy teeth!

The holidays are a special time. A time for great food, great company and hopefully a great smile.

But I’ll tell you from experience, some people are not smiling during this time of year. The stress from all the planning and shopping can really get to people, and as usual, dental care is at the bottom of the priority list. Here are some common questions I tend to get at the office around this time. Hopefully the answers will make your holidays a little less stressful!

I really wanted to come in this month, but I’m just too busy. Do my insurance benefits roll over?

Dental insurance plans tend to have a fixed annual maximum that does not roll over. Either you use it or you lose it. But don’t worry, you still might be able to get in to see the dentist before the end of the year. Just remember, you’re not the only one who is scrambling to get in before December 31. If your dental office tells you they have no appointments remaining, ask to be put on a short list. Busy schedules also mean a good number of cancellations, and dental offices want to fill those gaps as quickly as they can.

Make it clear to the office staff that you want to be notified as soon as there is an opening. Be flexible!

I have a lot of holiday parties coming up.

Is there anything I can do to give my smile a boost?

There are a plethora of ways to enhance your smile, and in the end this question has to be answered on an individual level. However, the quickest and easiest way to a brighter smile is the one-hour whitening procedure. Although the results don’t last long, it will definitely give you the boost you’re seeking. It’s actually become quite popular to gift someone a one-

hour whitening. It’s something that can go hand in hand with gift cards for a massage or spa therapy. Just keep in mind that for long-term results, it always is better to couple one-hour whitening with a take home whitening system.

If you have specific aspects of your smile that you don’t like, the holidays are a great time to get them fixed. Finally correcting that one crooked tooth, or replacing that older stained filling can give you the confidence to smile again. So much of our social interactions have to do with first impressions and face-to-face conversations.

Can’t I just take a break from all the brushing and flossing? I’ll make a fresh start in January, I promise!

Trust me, it’s easy to come up with an excuse for not flossing. But, if anything, the holidays should be a time when you increase your brushing and flossing regimen, not decrease it! Remember we’ve had a steady decline since Halloween. We binge on candy, then we sit down to Thanksgiving dinner, and now December comes and we’re ready to cheat on those diets for just one more month. And who can blame us? Another month of rich, delicious foods and treats; it’s hard to say no.

For your teeth, you can enjoy those rich, high carb foods, but drink plenty of water afterwards.

If you are brushing only once a day, increase it to twice. If you already brush in the morning and evening, sneak in one more brushing after lunch.

Try to floss regularly. Start out slow and build it up. Consistency in flossing really is the key to effective prevention. Everyone feels that one big piece of meat and flosses it out immediately.

That’s not what causes the damage. It’s a steady stream of undetectable loose carbs floating in the pockets between your teeth that can collect and cause disease and decay over time. Regular flossing will keep those particles out and keep the bacteria in check.

This tooth was hurting last month, but it feels fine now. I can just come in after the New Year to get it fixed right?

If you have had pain in a tooth more than once, then there is likely something going on that requires treatment. The worst thing you can do is put it off, especially around the holidays. Do you have any idea the number of emergency calls we get right around Christmas and New Years?

Too many! Unfortunately, my office is closed for Christmas and New Years, in fact, most dental offices are closed. That puts you in a very uncomfortable position during what should be one of the happiest times of the year. If you have even the slightest feeling that something may be wrong, get it checked out as soon as you can.

You never want to make a decision about your dental care while you’re in severe pain.

If people can just change or improve one or two behaviors, it will go a long way in helping to improve their digestive heath.”

Digestive health screening procedures are important. “We offer a variety of screening tests at Elmhurst Outpatient Surgery Center (EOSC).

used to screen for colorectal abnormalities, including cancer and precancerous conditions.

An upper endoscopy enables the physician to view the inside of the upper digestive tract -- the esophagus, stomach, and first part of the small intestine. If you are experiencing stomach problems such as abdominal pain, reflux, difficulties swallowing, then it is probably a good idea to schedule an upper endoscopy. This procedure screens for a variety of conditions such as Barrett’s Esophagus, hiatal hernia, ulcer or bowel obstruction.”

Colonoscopies are a necessary part of life for the over 50 crowd. “Colon cancer is one of the top three cancers for both men and women.

Colonoscopies, however, have been shown to scientifically reduce the risk of cancer. In addition, most insurance companies now cover this preventive measure. So, there’s really no reason not to have the procedure done.”

Convenience counts. “EOSC’s mobile message reminder service and online medical history portal (which initially collects background information and then becomes the patient's own personal health record) take the aggravation out of the pre-procedure process. EOSC even offers Saturday appointments, so you don’t have to take off work or inconvenience a family member to transport you to your procedure during the week.”

Pillow talk Experts weigh in on the importance of a good night's sleep

inter means shorter days, more time indoors and . . . sleeping problems? It’s true: Sunshine signals our brains to be alert and awake while darkness sends the message that it’s bedtime. With so little sunshine in the winter months, we tend to feel sleepy throughout the day so there’s no distinctive darkness to bring on slumber in the evening hours.

According to Kuljeet Gill, M.D., Medical Director at Central DuPage Hospital’s Sleep Center, the short and overcast days of winter trigger three situations to hamper your sleep. First, since we acquire Vitamin D from sunshine, our levels of this important vitamin may drop so significantly that we feel fatigued. Secondly, the lack of natural light can cause Seasonal Affective Disorder. One of the main elements of this disorder is depression, which itself can cause either excessive sleepiness or insomnia, said Dr. Gill. Third, people tend to become less active in the winter months when it’s cold and dark outside. But physical exercise is crucial to sufficient sleep.

When suffering from any of these winter woes, it’s important to take action because getting enough rest is critical to our mental and physical health. According to Rick Munoz, sleep center director at Adventist Hinsdale Hospital, getting adequate sleep (seven to nine hours for adults) each night: • Ensures our ability to stay awake and alert at school, work and on the road.

• Increases our ability to learn and retain new information.

• Promotes a healthy metabolism.

• Prevents disease and supports our immune system function.

• Lowers stress.

• Conversely, a lack of adequate sleep can cause: • Accidents, since our judgment can be impaired.

• Memory problems that hinder performance at school or work.

• Aging skin.

• Weight gain and morbid obesity.

• Depression.

• Serious health problems, including heart disease, heart attack, irregular heartbeat, high blood pressure, stroke, diabetes.

To foster healthy sleeping habits, Gill suggests maintaining a regular bed and wake time schedule, even on the weekends.

“By doing so, you train your biological or “circadian” clock,” Gill says. “You shouldn’t vary your bed and wake times more than 15 minutes each day.”

Additionally, adopting a relaxing bedtime routine, especially for people with insomnia, can be key.

The routine should last 30 to 60 minutes and can include a hot bath or shower.

“The warm water lowers your body temperature which is a signal to your brain that it’s time to sleep,” says Gill. Watching TV or reading are okay but for those people struggling with sleep problems, they should not do these activities in bed. Deep breathing, light stretching and drinking herbal teas or warm milk are other ways you can “unwind your mind,” Gill adds.

When children can’t sleep, parents may need advice from a physician who is a sleep specialist.

Anna Ivanenko, M.D. PhD, is the medical director of the Pediatric Sleep Center at Cadence Health at Central DuPage Hospital and she has the following tips to help parent and child

your child’s ability to rest.

• Avoid medications to help your child sleep. Medications become ineffective over time and may affect daytime alertness. They may also wear off during the night and cause your child to awaken.

• Discourage excessive evening fluids.

Restricting fluids, however, is not an effective approach for children who wet their bed. You should allow them to satisfy their thirst and focus on teaching then to awaken to relieve a full bladder.

• Establish daytime routines. Regular meal and activity times help to anchor sleep times. Routines make it easier for children to wind down before sleep.

• Make the bedroom a “sleep-only” zone.

Remove most toys, games, televisions, computers and radios if your child is having trouble falling asleep or staying asleep. These items can be powerful cues for wakefulness. One or two stuffed animals are acceptable. Adolescents may need a home office outside the bedroom to do homework.

Bedtime best practices

• Develop bedtime rituals. A bedtime ritual is a powerful cue that it is time to sleep. It needs to be simple so the child can “re-create” the ritual even if the parent is not present. Try writing out the ritual like a script to make it consistent and to share with other caregivers.

• Pay attention to the sleep environment.

Background noises, location, bedding, favorite toys and lighting can all affect a child’s ability to fall asleep. A cool, dark, quiet room is best. Letting children cry themselves to sleep is not recommended. Instead, teach your child to soothe him or herself. Avoid rocking, holding or other activities that depend on a parent’s presence.

• Establish consistent waking times. Bed times and waking times should be the same day after day, seven days a week.

Waking times are more potent than bed times in establishing sleep rhythms.

“Sleeping in” can be a sign of sleep deprivation.

• Avoid caffeinated drinks. Caffeine is a potent stimulant so it can interfere with

showcase DEEDA CORDIN | Burr Ridge “AFTER THE RAIN” WATERCOLOR A western influence can be detected in many of my paintings, as I grew up in New Mexico on a working cattle ranch. Oil painting was my medium of choice in college, however my passion is now watercolors because they are unpredictable and spontaneous. For close to thirty years I have been painting professionally and teaching in my studio in Hinsdale. I am also on staff at Kingswood Academy teaching art to 4-8 grades. My paintings are exhibited at my own studio, Deep Creek Art, and at the Hinsdale Fine Art Fair in June. "Yellow" is the study of three unrelated objects but all in the same color.
