I talk to a lot of women.

Whether I’m corresponding with a reader, trading “war” stories with other moms, or enjoying the camaraderie of my girlfriends over a glass of wine, my connection to women in our communities seems to grow stronger by the day.

I think it's fair to say we all know someone affected by breast cancer – mother, a sister, a wife, a friend – as it has become a disease that takes so much, but also shows us the value of the women around us.

In this important awareness month, Suburban Life Magazine sat down to speak with the women of Wellness House, an innovative support facility in Hinsdale that’s been tending to the emotional and spiritual side of cancer recovery long before it was a recognized therapy. Through programs on nutrition, yoga, stress management, and even romance, Wellness House is helping women keep their lives moving throughout their battles with cancer.

Elmhurst goes ‘wilder’ for holiday artisan event

Enjoy holiday shopping in a beautiful setting, at the Third Annual Wilder Mansion Holiday Market, Nov. 8 and 9 at the mansion, 211 South Prospect Ave. Elmhurst, Choose from an array of unique and delightful gifts from more than 50 artists and culinary food vendors. The prices range from $10 to 150.

The Holiday Market features several styles of art including folk art, contemporary, and urban. There will be a variety of jewelry, and handbags that range from casual to dressy. Home decor items include tableware, wood frames, and wall items.

For the kids, there are funky kids hats and one of a kind books signed by the author. Also available for are paintings, glass, ceramics, clothing, and gourmet foods.

Taryn Palumbo will offer decorative lanterns at the market.

The artisan chocolates, biscuits and ice cream cakes are to order, and jarred sauces make great corporate gifts. “Cookies for Kid’s Cancer”, will donate all their proceeds to childhood cancer research. Two high school students make all the cookies for this unique effort.

Wellness House welcomes cancer patients, loved ones for support, holistic care, and a sense of family -By Melissa Riske

W

ithin the walls of a home there are many stories, and that certainly holds true at the Wellness House in Hinsdale.

Wellness House is not a medical center or a clinic. True to its name, it has been designed to look as much like a home as possible, though the large demonstration kitchen and workout rooms in the basement may be a bit larger than what is found in an average family abode.

Keeping the home running is a team of dedicated individuals.

Social worker Alison Graft is about to mark her one-year anniversary working at the Wellness House. Graft is leading the new couples counseling initiative. Cancer can create stress for both the patient and caregiver, and from this stress there can be new hurdles in a relationship and a breakdown in communication, Graft said.

“We’re providing the skills and the opportunity to learn how to improve communication,” Graft said. “Couples have such a huge need to have support together.”

Counseling and support groups have been a mainstay since the formation of Wellness House, yet through the years services have evolved, paving new avenues for patients and their families looking to connect, understand and cope with the affects of cancer.

Counselor Valerie Piazza said the Wellness House is making a strong effort to reach out to patients and their care teams, which can include a spouse, children, parents and friends.

“Cancer doesn’t just affect the person with the diagnosis, it affects everybody involved in their lives,” Piazza said.

Piazza offers a unique understanding of the medical and emotional aspects of cancer. A nurse for more than 35 years, she worked with oncology patients at the University of Chicago before joining the Wellness House team.

“I think it’s comforting for patients to know I do understand what they saying or about surgical options, and I can even help answer some of those questions,” Piazza said.

While the Wellness House isn’t affiliated with a hospital or medical group, it continues to work closely with doctors and hospitals to help cancer patients and their families learn about the resources available. Piazza said the medical community has come to understand the importance of treating the body as well as the social and emotional needs of a patient.

“That’s a very important part of what people desire, the holistic care and support,” Piazza said.

Tracy Lester, manager of the Healthy Lifestyles programs, oversees a variety of activities and classes under the umbrellas of exercise, nutrition and stress management.

“We can help people adopt healthy lifestyles for the rest of their life and while they’re in active treatment,” Lester said.

Research has shown that exercise and dietary changes can help reduce side affects during cancer treatments, Lester said. Whether a participant is undergoing treatment, recovering

Continued from page 9 or a long-term survivor, there are exercise and nutrition plans available for all stages, she said.

“The nice thing about a place like the Wellness House is people don’t have to worry because we are here to help guide them,” she said.

This fall, Lester is coordinating an Artist in Residence program with art workshops, funded through a grant from the LIVESTRONG™ Foundation.

Wellness House relies on grants, donations and fundraising for support. It provides programming and services at no cost to participants. Executive Director Jeannie Cella said she is proud of how the community has continued to support the Wellness House.

“Cancer affects all of us,” Cella said. “If not personally, it is someone in our family or a close friend. It is an experience everyone understands.”

Cella has been a part of the Wellness House since 1990 and became the executive director in 2000. Under her leadership, the Wellness House has continued to evolve through physical building renovations and innovations with classes and programming.

In the 2012-13 fiscal year Wellness House served more than 2,300 clients, Cella said.

“We’re a pretty busy place,” Cella said. “There really is something for everyone.”

As a staff member for more than 18 years psychologist Michael Williams sees how participants discover a place they belong at Wellness House.

“Many aren’t sure what to expect,” he said.

“They walk in and see a bunch of real people just like them, coming in to sweat in the gym, laughing as they come out of a group session, sitting having coffee or heading downstairs to take a yoga class.

“It’s very powerful, that feeling of normalization,” he continued. “The isolation that occurred will start to fade and they will feel connected to a community.”

A Viral Dilemma As the debate over HPV vaccines continues, health officials worry over ‘preventable tragedies’ -By Martha Maddi

I

n this month of Breast Cancer Awareness, mindfulness of another potentially cancerous affliction affecting women is building across communities – the human papillomavirus, more commonly known as the HPV infection.

Some 15 strains of the virus (there are about 100 in total) have been said to lead to a variety of cancers, predominantly cervical cancer. It is widespread and symptoms are rarely visible, spread through sexual contact and carried by both men and women. The progression to cancer is a result of ongoing cell mutation, and the process typically takes years before it becomes apparent.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC,) about 79 million Americans, most in their late teens and early 20s, are infected with HPV. But a relatively new vaccine, released in 2006, is designed to halt the HPV virus. In a June 2013 press release, the CDC pointed to a recent study that showed that since the 2006 introduction of the vaccine, the cancercausing strains of HPV cases have decreased by 56 percent among female teenagers 14 to 19 years of age.

“Our mission is preventing illness, and the HPV vaccine is one way we protect public health,” says DuPage County Health Department spokesman David W. Hass,. It is effective and that is why we offer it through

our Vaccines for Children Program at the health department.”

Despite its effects, it is the topic of debate and discussion among physicians, parents and young women, mainly because it is being recommended to boys and girls as they are entering middle school, an age many parents feel is too young to be vaccinated against a sexually transmitted disease.

Health officials say boys and girls ages 11 and 12 should receive the Gardasil vaccination, according to the CDC. It is given as three injections over a six-month period. In females ages 9 to 26, Gardasil helps protect against two types of HPV that cause about 75 percent of cervical cancer cases. In males and females ages 9 to 26, it helps protect against 90 percent of genital wart cases. If girls and boys have not been fully vaccinated by age 12, the CDC recommends that females through age 26 and males through age 21 receive the vaccine.

About one-third of girls aged 13 to 17 have been fully vaccinated at this point, according to CDC Director Tom Frieden.

“Our low vaccination rates represent 50,000 preventable tragedies – 50,000 girls alive today will develop cervical cancer over their lifetime that would have been prevented if we reach 80 percent vaccination rates,” Frieden said.

Put Your Money Where Your Mouth Is The economy finally is bouncing back! Although we may not ever get back to what was considered “normal” before the bubble burst, things do seem to be getting better.

Unfortunately, one of the many casualties of the economic crisis was dental health. As folks cut back, reeled in spending and held tight to their budgets, I saw elective dental procedures drop dramatically after 2008. But elective or not, these procedures have drastic effects on quality of life, and I am pleased to see that as the economy betters, people once again are considering their dental care a priority.

So how can you achieve the smile you want without breaking the bank?

Get regular checkups every six months.

One of the easiest ways to prevent the need for expensive procedures is to go for your dental check up and cleaning every six months. Why? Six months is pretty much the minimum time it takes for a cavity to develop to the point that it’s visible, either in the mouth or on an x-ray. So if we see you every six months, and you develop a cavity, we can now treat that cavity at a very early stage, with minimal discomfort and a very low price tag.

Wait until you feel pain, and you'll likely need a root canal and crown. Suddenly a procedure that should have cost a couple hundred dollars will cost a couple thousand.

Understand your dental insurance.

Dental insurance is like a helping hand, or a subsidy. It will partially pay for most procedures but it will never pay for the completion of treatment. What’s worse, many employers are cutting dental and vision plans from their

employee benefit programs as a way of saving money. If you have dental insurance now, use it!

I have had many, patients put off treatment that would have been covered at 80 percent by their insurance, only to return after the insurance has been cancelled and have to foot the bill on their own.

Consider financing.

Many dental procedures can be expensive.

Financing is a great way to get the treatment you need sooner rather than later. Many thirdparty financing programs offer zero percent interest financing plans for 12 months or more.

A treatment that costs $6,000 may seem out of reach, but spread that out into 12 monthly payments and suddenly it becomes possible.

Most dental offices offer these third party plans nowadays. They don’t want to deal with the hassles of collections.

Invest in yourself.

Often we see people who are ready to spend thousands of dollars on a flat screen TV or a car but not on their dental health. It’s unfortunate, as investing in a healthy smile will affect all aspects of your life. Without a full-set of healthy teeth, it becomes difficult to maintain a healthy diet, leading to problems with weight, cholesterol, blood pressure and a host of other issues. Without a nice smile, a person who is normally socially outgoing can become more embarrassed and reserved. This can lead to fewer job opportunities and problems with personal relationships. I have had countless patients in sales tell me how restoring their smile has made a huge difference at work.

For example, if you are missing multiple teeth, dental implants are the best long-term solution, but they can be more pricey up front. Always take a team approach to dental care.

Ask plenty of questions when you are given a treatment plan. Is this the most ideal treatment for me? Why? Are there alternatives to this treatment?

Finally, you should understand what happens if you choose to do nothing. In the end, that is always an option, but I have found that the patients who initially choose to avoid treatment do so only because they either don’t have an understanding of the consequences, they are afraid, or they have a financial barrier. Once we clear through those concerns, most people are ready to move forward in restoring their teeth so they can achieve the healthy beautiful smile they deserve.

aying goodbye to summer doesn’t have to be a sentimental ending when you consider it’s also a beginning — the kick off to autumn and the holiday season.

Now is a great time to dress up your home for fall entertaining.

“Colors that evoke a sense of nostalgia and family are a really big part of the visual design message for autumn 2013,” says visual merchandiser John Griffith. “Reds, golds and oranges are trending this fall. These hues are not only warm and comforting; they’re reflective of the season.”

Griffith and teammate Julie Robbins add their own unique spin on the latest trends to create seasonal design vignettes for Replacements, Ltd., the world’s largest retailer of old and new china, crystal, silver and collectibles. Easy ways to mix in great fall colors include adding a charger plate or colorful serving pieces.

“I’m big on the pressed vintage patterns; depression glass, coin glass and sandwich glass are all very lovely and nostalgic,” Robbins says.

Metal servingware is another popular — and functional — trend this fall. Once heated, the alloy retains warmth to keep food warmer longer or cooler if you chill these pieces, Robbins says.

Discover the wonders of Oregon wine At the beginning of September, I had the pleasure of touring Oregon Wine Country, specifically Willamette Valley, with 18 of my customers. We visited 11 wineries in four days. Sound like a forced march?

Nope, very leisurely. In fact, it couldn't have been better.

Cabernet and Company

Visiting Willamette Valley is easy. It's only a 45-minute drive south of Portland's main airport.

The valley is between the Cascade Mountains on the east and the Coast Range on the west. You can't miss it. The valley is obviously good for growing grapes, but also grows hazelnuts and alfalfa. We learned the three biggest agricultural exports are: grass seed (someone has to grow it), hazelnuts (80 percent of U.S. consumption), and wine. The alfalfa is a little further down the export list, and interestingly, it all goes to Japan to feed the country’s Kobe beef.

Now let’s put Oregon's wine industry in context: Oregon annual wine production totals somewhere around 2.2 million cases. Willamette Valley production represents the majority of that, at about 1.6 million. In comparison, California produces more than 250 million cases each year, of which Napa Valley alone averages between 8 and 9 million.

Napa Valley has close to 800 producers. On average each one produces somewhere between 10,000 and 12,000 cases. Willamette has 316 producers which on average produce 5,000 cases each (and in reality, most produce between 1,000 to 3,000 cases.)

In Napa, Cabernet Sauvignon is king – big, bold and dramatic. In Willamette, it's Pinot Noir, which is all about elegance.

Dramatic differences to say the least.

Willamette is known for Pinot Noir, Pinot Gris and Chardonnay. Similar to Burgundy in France, Willamette Valley is a cool climate growing area. The Pinot Noir is rich with lots of nuances; strawberry, clove, cinnamon and earthiness. Not quite Burgundy, but probably the closest you'll get from New World producers.

The region’s Pinot Gris varieties also were delicious. It's Oregon's most prevalent white grape.

Characteristically, it's got lots of bright fruit and acidity, filling the glass with aromas of pear, apple and melon. It is the perfect to pair with most any chicken dish or salad.

The most surprising revelation for me, though, was Willamette Valley Chardonnay. It's definitely not your parents' Chardonnay. Don't get me wrong, I like California Chards as long as they're balanced. A bit of butter and oak is a good thing. But the Chards coming out of Oregon are much more Old World style, with lots of classic Chardonnay fruit, minerals and acidity. They are beautiful food wines.

The vineyards are tucked away in the mountain hillsides. The wines are great, while the productions are tiny. And I would be remiss if I didn't tell you that the people are delightfully warm and welcoming. I definitely recommend you visit for yourself, but if you can't, don’t despair. Here in Illinois we have a huge variety of Oregon wines from which to choose. Get yourself over to your favorite wine shop and try a few. It's well worth the investment.

Vicki Martinka Petersen enjoys taking long train rides through the western suburbs to her job as a media relations specialist for a health care association in Chicago. She believes Chicago isn’t the only fun destination along the train line and is sharing what the suburban train stops have to offer.

Six years ago, Metra become the second car in our household when I sold my automobile and joined my husband on the train into Chicago for work. I always thought I knew the towns along the BNSF train line pretty well, since I’ve lived in the western suburbs most of my life. But after years of passing through these towns on a regular basis, I discovered there are some great treasures near each train stop some that might even rival their counterparts in Chicago.

I have enjoyed many glasses of Riesling and bites of crostini topped with prosciutto and Parmigiano reggiano at wine bars near my office. So, I decided to try some of the wine bars in the towns I pass on the train ride home.

First stop – Salt Creek Wine Bar in Brookfield (just north of tracks, 8900 Fairview Ave., www. saltcreekwinebar.com). This place feels like you’re meeting with friends for a drink at home.

The living room atmosphere boasts several couches waiting to be lounged upon as well as tables and chairs.

The seasonal wine flights feature wines from around the world, including Argentina, Chile and South Africa. The menu accommodates appetites of all types from tapas pizza to sandwiches. While sipping a glass of Pinot Grigio, I admired artwork from local artists hanging on the yellow wall near the piano. Patrons also can enjoy live entertainment via open mike and jazz nights.

The schedule is announced via a weekly email, The Wineglass, which you can sign up for on the website.

Second stop – Hillgrove Wine Cellars in Western Spring (just north of tracks, 800 Hillgrove Ave., www.hillgrovewinecellars. net). For a moment it seemed like I stepped into a wine bar in Chicago, as I took in the ambiance complete with track lighting, exposed pipes in the ceiling and high tables.

Their specialty is lahoush. The super thin cracker bread topped with Havarti cheese just melts in your mouth. I’ll be sure to order some again when I return on a Wednesday evening during their free wine tastings, which feature a selection of four to six wines.

Last stop – The Cellar Door in Downers Grove (few blocks south of tracks, 5150 Main St., www.hinsdalecellars.com).

When I first suggested meeting here for dinner one time after a hair appointment, my husband was a bit skeptical one could eat a full meal at a wine bar.

But he was impressed with the extensive menu that ranged from flights of gourmet cheese and charcuterie to a page devoted to his favorite food: pizza.

This bistro/wine shop features three distinct seating areas: a brick patio by the entrance, the main area with oversized wine barrel tables, and an intimate setting in the back with couches, chairs and end tables. Patrons can test their wits during trivia night on Wednesdays and enjoy live music on Thursdays.

ust steps from the train station in downtown Downers Grove, a Japanese tradition of simple, accessible food has taken new form, in the grand opening of Sushi House, at 950 Warren Avenue.

This latest addition to the Sushi House family – which already has successful area locations in LaGrange, Westmont, Wheaton, Naperville and Oak Park – exceptional sushi and Asian dishes in a refined, yet inviting, atmosphere—all with a watchful eye on customer satisfaction.

would like to pretend, for just one day, that I am a perfect wife and mother. These days, I feel far from perfect. My fuse is shorter, my kids more unruly. No matter how hard I try, no matter how much I discipline them, no matter how much I do to provide fun activities, nothing ever seems good enough.

A friend of mine works for a talk show produced in Chicago, and she reached out to me to submit some video clips for an upcoming segment. She asked me to give a quick snip-it, admitting something I do as a parent that might make me a “bad mom.”

I was hoping she was asking several other mothers and not just me. It would be embarrassing to think she got this assignment and immediately thought, “I know a bad mom! I’ll contact Michelle Stien.” And while I can think of a million and one things that cause me to second-guess myself every day, I hoped I wasn’t the worst of the bunch.

As I lamented, life continued as usual. My kids both were grounded from playing with our neighbors for throwing temper tantrums.

That followed with Colin losing television, video game and iPod Touch privileges for an entire day, just for his general behavior.

And when I thought I had finished with the punishments, (there weren’t many more things I could take away from them) I found out Colin dropped an F-bomb in the childcare center at my gym. In his defense (and mine) another boy said it first and then Colin retorted with the same phrase. Still, I felt like the inmates were running the asylum and perhaps I was “The.Worst.Mom. Ever.”

Smack in the middle of my pity-party, I came across a blog on Facebook that put everything in perspective. The blog post was titled, “To the Unwashed Masses of Mothers” at scarymommy.com.

Initially, I thought the post was going to slam moms like me – the ones who yell at their kids at the grocery store. The ones who don’t care if a shower comes at the beginning or end of the day. The ones who, for a brief moment while shopping, look as if they are abandoning their screaming, temper-tantrum throwing four-year-old who wants a toy. The one who at that moment throws “1-2-3 Magic” and “Love and Logic” out the window in favor of an old-fashioned tongue-lashing.

But the post offered a kinder, gentler take on moms like me. The bottom line: “You are doing better than you think.” Another line that struck a chord with me: “There is no such thing as a perfect mom.” It went on to quote a Yiddish saying, “There is one perfect child in the world, and every mother has it.”

I sighed in relief. I had been struggling with my column, feeling like everything I have been writing has been a farce. I had no words of wisdom. Quite frankly, I usually feel like I should be the one seeking out parenting advice.

But this woman, all in one 600-word blog, made me feel like a million bucks. She made me remember why I started writing about my kids in the first place, and why so many readers continue to follow my crazy tales.

They are honest, realistic and relatable.

Together, we can laugh and find humor through the chaos that is motherhood.

There’s a reason there is an entire talk show segment dedicated to parents doubting themselves. We’re not alone. I’m not alone.

So, no. I’m not perfect. To be quite honest, I don’t want to be. At the end of the day, I still look at my kids in wonder and amazement for how incredible they are. I still can’t believe how much love I feel for them. They still cry when I leave the house, hug me when I come back and think that I’m “The. Best. Mom.Ever.” And I wouldn’t trade that feeling for anything, imperfections and all.

Character Counts Historic architecture, charming storefronts and common vision make Glen Ellyn a destination along the rails

ith trees canopied overhead, welcoming benches and flower box-lined streets, downtown Glen Ellyn greets its visitors with welcoming warmth. And more than 90 retail shops and restaurants make it a destination, rather than just a stop along the way.

Harkening back to the mid-1800s, the architecture adds to the appeal and provides one of the most charming and inviting areas to spend time in the suburbs. The rail draws commuters to the heart of downtown, its accessibility is appealing to young and old.

“The visual aspect of our downtown draws people in,” says Glen Ellyn Chamber of Commerce co-executive director and 30-year Glen Ellyn resident Georgia Koch. “We have a vibrant downtown. The streets are small and very welcoming, and it really has a hometown feel about it.”

“Business owners want to open and be a part of the community, they want to make some money, and they come because we have this group that is going to assist and enhance their own marketing efforts,” White says.

Appealing for shoppers, the downtown sector pulls in shop owners and small businesses, creating a burgeoning commercial district for residents and visitors alike.

Tom Konopacki, owner of Anastazia’s Treasures for the Home in Geneva, decided to open his second location in Glen Ellyn two years ago.

“One of the pros of being in Glen Ellyn is that there is a very strong Chamber of Commerce and Downtown Alliance,” he says. “Each organization works year-round to sponsor events to bring fun and excitement to the downtown.”

In October, the Halloween parade will draw families downtown, where kids can line up (for almost a block and a half) and parade down the main street before trick-or-treating at all of the shops. The Holiday Walk is the last event of the calendar year, and as Koch notes, is also the most nostalgic because people come with their children and grandchildren to see Santa light the tree.
