HOME IMPROVEMENT Renovations at historic McCormick House return prefab home to former glory

W

hen the Elmhurst Art Museum moved into the McCormick House in the 1990s, many facets of the historic house were displaced as the home was reconfigured to create larger spaces for events in the south wing and to accommodate staff offices in the north wing.

Twenty years later, when the administrative offices moved to another location, the McCormick House was primed for an extreme makeover. After three more years and two phases of construction, the home is on its way to returning to the same allure as when Robert Hall McCormick III moved in with his family in 1952.

2016, included the removal of existing paint and restoring the building to its original color scheme. The second phase, completed last summer, separated the house from the museum hallway, which exposed the original façade including the carport and a new front door. Visitors can now see the home’s iconic entrance and its unique features.

“We needed to differentiate between the two wings. People would see the McCormick House listed in a brochure and ask where to find it not realizing they were in the house,” says John McKinnon, museum executive director. “When we built into the original home, some elements, like the carport, were camouflaged.”

“Now people can walk out the museum building, go under the carport, open the front door and see details like the front lightbulb and mailbox from the era the house was built,” McKinnon says.

was moved to the Elmhurst Art Museum grounds.

Back in Time

“I didn’t expect these international and national showcases to stem from the renovation,” McKinnon adds.

Visionary Home

The McCormick House is one of three single family homes designed by modernist architect Mies van der Rohe.

Designed as a home for the McCormick family, the house also served as a prototype for prefab modular homes van der Rohe hoped to build as city dwellers flocked to Chicago’s western suburbs.

Unfortunately not enough buyers jumped at this opportunity and the project was scrapped. Still, van der Rohe left his mark on Chicago’s architecture

landscape, including the Farnsworth House in Plano and the twin glass and steel apartment towers on Lake Shore Drive in Chicago.

“He helped shape Chicago with this design element of steel and glass,” McKinnon says.

After the McCormicks moved on, the Sladek family rented the home from 1961 to 1963 before it was sold to the Fick family. Ray Fick, who served as the mayor of Elmhurst from 1973 to 1977, lived in the home with his wife, Mary Ann, and their two sons for 30 years before they sold the home to the Elmhurst Fine Arts and Civic Center Foundation. Two years later the house

Visitors can get a sneak peak in September when the house will be fully furnished and period appropriate.

“We want to give a vision for future renovations projects to restore the interior and give visitors a better sense of how families lived during this time period,” McKinnon says.

McCormick Home Tour Visitors can see the renovations for themselves during a 45-minute tour of the home at 1:30 p.m. Saturday, July 13 and 27. This docent-led tour explores the unique history and design of the McCormick House as well as focuses on

rotating artworks on display.

In July, visitors can see “Luftwerk: Parallet Perspectives,” an exhibition that includes several light and color works with static and dynamic changing color relationships, including an immersive light piece that transforms a bedroom in the home, neon pieces with mirrored effects, pulsing lightboxes, and colorful glass panes. The art installation also is inspired by the idea that prefab homes, like McCormick House, can have windows tinted any color of the rainbow.

“People come in knowing the basic narrative of when McCormick House was built and how it was designed in the modern style by Mies van der Rohe. But by taking a tour, we’re telling them other stories to enrich their experience of the house,” McKinnon says. “Every time they come back, they can learn different stories.”

Lizzadro Museum of Lapidary Art finds new space in nearby Oak Brook

F

or nearly 60 years the Lizzadro Museum of Lapidary Art has drawn thousands of visitors a year to the city of Elmhurst, Illinois. From across town to across the world, young and old alike have come to learn about and appreciate the underground gifts the earth has shared and that artists from around the world have rendered into amazing works.

Now, the museum is heading to a new home — a larger home — in Oak Brook, offering more space, more programs and the opportunity for growth. The original building, at 220 Cottage Hill Avenue, closed May 31, with plans to open at its new location at 1220 Kensington Road this fall.

“We really need a more modern facility,” says Dorothy Asher, the museum’s director and granddaughter of museum founder Joseph Lizzadro, an Italian immigrant who settled in Chicago where he worked his way up from cobbler to chairman of the board of Meade Electric.

Lizzadro began collecting stones in the 1930s, opening the museum Nov. 4, 1962 in Wilder Park through an agreement with the City of Elmhurst and Elmhurst Park District. He continued to collect beautiful works of lapidary art until his death 10 years later.

“There’s a lot of space that we don’t have here [in Elmhurstt]],” Asher says of the 7,000-square-foot building. The new venue will be double that.

“We’ll be gaining a lecture/multi-purpose room that will be separate from the exhibit area. Right now it’s currently inside the exhibit area.” The room is used for educational programs like the Rock and Mineral Identification program and Rockin’ Jewelry program. The new lloocation will also include a special exhibit room area, more office space and a library.

“All of those things we’re in dire need of,” notes Asher. The exhibit area will also expand. “We will have some new things on display and we’ll rework some of the exhibits.”

The museum is continually adding to its collection. “Last fall we were awarded a large collection from the Oakland County Museum, which includes a huge 6-foot pagoda out of jade,” says Asher. “It’s a special collection and it fits right in with our collection. It’s late Qing Dynasty. Currently here there is absolutely nowhere we could put that.

It’s going to have to have a special case and special interpretation. That’s just one thing we’ll be changing.”

Another change taking place, thanks to the new expanded space, is a new placement of the museum’s screen, revealing a surprise to visitors that was hidden against a wall since the museum opened. “It’s currently being totally restored, and you’ll be able to walk around the screen, because on the back is a beautiful painting of a Chinese scene in lacquer. It’s a very special piece that’s been against the wall for 57 years. That will be back on display.

“We’re really improving what we already have,” says Asher. “We’ll be able to offer more in the way of educational activities and programs.

We’ll also have an outdoor patio,

which will be really wonderful, and an expanded gift shop.”

The museum offers rock and mineral identification every month and programs for school and scout groups.

Of the 28,000 visitors the Lizzadro Museum sees each year, most are from the Chicago area, but the number also includes out-of-state and international travelers.

BIG BLOW OUT July 21-22

The museum’s entire collection, all of which is moving to the new location, includes breathtaking works of mosaics, dioramas, jade carvings, cameos, organic gems such as coral and agate, gemstones, rocks, minerals and fossils. More than half of the pieces are from Joseph Lizzadro’s collection.

The museum continually receives donations and Joseph Lizzadro’s son, John Lizzadro and executive director of the museum, continues to collect pieces, Asher says.

“We really are a world renowned collection for lapidary art,” Asher says.

“We’re one of the very few museums dedicated solely to lapidary art in the world. We’re not a natural history museum and we’re not claiming to be a mineral museum, but we’re kind of in-between — the art of stone carving and the educational side of rocks and mineral,s as well. So it’s kind of this blending of art and science, as related to stone.”

OUR GREATEST NATIONAL TREASURES are the people who surround us With Jonathan Bilyk

W

hen the message came, it wasn’t unexpected. But it was still a bit jarring nonetheless.

While primarily a work trip, the conference and meeting schedule allowed time to squeeze in a few days of sight-seeing on either side.

express our appreciation to these people, to these national treasures, and to just sit and talk with them.

A man who I respected, professionally and personally, had passed during the night. We had only met a few years before, as part of a professional project. And we didn’t see each other often, most of our communication coming via the methods created to facilitate remote work in the 21st Century.

Obviously, when traveling to Philadelphia, no trip is complete without multiple cheesesteaks and a visit to America’s birthplace, Independence Hall. A tour of the old hall – where both the Declaration of Independence and the U.S. Constitution were debated and signed – leads thoughtful visitors to contemplate the historical luminaries who once walked the grounds.

It’s a lesson I hope to impart to my young ones, encouraging them to set aside the trivial and press for the profound, to find their own treasures in the company of people more seasoned than they, to develop deep relationships and allow the experience and wisdom of others to help guide their development.

A little over a year earlier, at a gathering in another city, he pledged to take time to sit together soon, and build that relationship. I looked forward to picking his brain a bit, to glean tidbits – or better yet, big bytes – of information from his decades of experience, and improve my craft a bit more.

Then, earlier this year, we learned the news of his illness, followed by a grim prognosis. It at least afforded the opportunity to say goodbye in an exchange of electronic communications – again, in a 21st Century way.

A few months later, he was gone.

When the message came, it was immediately juxtaposed against a commotion from upstairs.

My little ones were on the floor above me, arguing loudly over some trivial matter, as children do.

The dour moment was quickly lifted by a chuckle, as I reflected upon the last time my colleague and I had seen each other, in Philadelphia. And my thoughts turned to Nicholas Cage.

While such national treasures as Thomas Jefferson, George Washington and Philly’s own Ben Franklin are front and center, now tour guides in Philadelphia will often reference another kind of “National Treasure,” the 2004 film by that name starring Cage. In that film, Cage and his co-stars follow clues that lead them to steal the original Declaration of Independence to decipher a treasure map hidden on the back of the historic document to locate a massive treasure trove, stashed away by the Founding Fathers at the time of America’s founding.

While a fun, yet insipid, guilty pleasure, the film helped put into words how I felt about my colleague, and a number of other aging friends, family members, mentors and former co-workers, all of whom have accompanied me on my path, even if for a short time, and played important roles in shaping me.

Too often, pressed by demands large and small, and often trivial, most of us struggle to find time to

Perhaps that encouragement can be delivered not in telling, but in doing, as they see me set the example.

But amid the busyness of life and work, inevitably, a message will come again, telling of the passing of yet another treasure. Hopefully, it will not also deliver the disappointing feeling that comes of wondering why we so often expect there will always be next year.  Jonathan Bilyk writes about the triumphs and travails of being a modernday dad who legitimately enjoys time with his family, while tolerating a dog that seems to adore him. He also doesn’t really like the moniker “Superdad” because it makes it sound like he wants to wear his undergarments on the outside of his pants. (Also, the cape remains on back order.)

And this season, the Elmhurst History Museum is bringing it all back.

Every summer, the museum coordinates a large-scale event in conjunction with their respective exhibits. This year, it’s a classic carnival.

The supervisor of education services, Jessie Wandersee, set out with the goal of making the event a festive, family-focused celebration of “kiddie parks” that would engage all ages.

The festival, which will be held from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. on Friday, July 12, will be reminiscent of old-school carnivals in the area like Kiddieland and Dispensa’s Kiddie Kingdom.

Kiddie rides will include a mini ferris wheel, trackless train, dunk tank, crafts, carnivalstyle games, popcorn and cotton candy.

School of Rock will also be providing music.

Kilwin’s will be serving ice cream, but all festival-goers are also welcome to bring their own picnic and make it a whole-day event.

“We hope to provide a high-quality and really fun experience to celebrate the pure joy that amusement parks evoke and the wonderful memories they create,” Roche says.

The event is being held as a complement to EHM exhibit “Worlds of Wonder: Remembering Chicagoland’s Amusement Parks”.

As for the family fun fest , Roche says she hopes it will not only bring back childhood memories for adults, but also expose children to something they’ll remember for the rest of their lives.

“I can’t wait to see the families from young kids to grandparents - enjoying themselves and interacting with our exhibit and staff,” Roche says. “It’s when we know that we’re doing your best work of making an exhibit come to life. That’s what it’s all about in the museum world!”

STILL ELMHURST’S OWN Local college to be renamed Elmhurst University in 2020

Building on nearly 150 years of preparing students for successful careers and lives, Elmhurst College will change its name to Elmhurst University, effective June 30, 2020.

“At this pivotal time in our history, less than two years away from our 150th anniversary in 2021, the decision to change our name to Elmhurst University marks the exciting start of the next chapter of our story,” says Elmhurst College President Troy D. VanAken. “While this is certainly a new and significant development, it is the result of an ongoing, collaborative process. It reflects discussions that have been taking place for some time regarding how we should celebrate who we are, what we have become, and what we need to be in order to best serve our students for generations to come.”

approved the new name on June 15.

Oficials say the university name more accurately reflects Elmhurst’s current educational profile as a comprehensive higher education institution offering undergraduate and graduate programs in the liberal arts and applied sciences, while anticipating opportunities for new programs and partnerships. The change comes at a time when the College has seen record enrollments and fundraising in the past couple of years.

The name change also honors the 1925 vision of H. Richard Niebuhr, Elmhurst College’s sixth president, of an “ever-widening circle” of opportunity for the college to reach an ever-widening

circle of diverse students with multiple interests and needs.

“A change in name will not alter our commitment to outstanding teaching, personal education and the fostering of an inclusive and supportive campus learning community that promotes social justice. These characteristics are central to how we promote academic excellence and achievement, and responsible citizenship,” says Ed Momkus, chair of the Board of Trustees and an alumnus from the Class of 1974.

“As one of more than 36,000 proud alumni, I believe in and treasure my Elmhurst education and the underlying values that support it,” he says.

“The tenets that have defined and distinguished us for nearly one and a half centuries will not change—they form the foundation upon which we

Elmhurst College currently offers more than 60 undergraduate programs of study, as well as 20 master’s degree and graduate certificate programs.

The name change will enhance Elmhurst’s recruitment efforts across all audiences and especially among international, graduate and nontraditional students because university status is more widely understood by those groups. It will reduce misconceptions some prospective employers may have. It also will pave the way for expanded academic and partnership opportunities for both faculty and students, as well as greater opportunities for participation in international and other off-campus programs.

The name-change idea has been raised periodically over the past several years. It was formally reintroduced in 2016, when VanAken initiated a strategic planning process for the campus community in preparation for Elmhurst’s sesquicentennial anniversary.

Over the past year, a robust dialogue took place among campus stakeholders, including faculty, staff

and students; and with the larger Elmhurst community, including the Board of Trustees and the Alumni Association Board of Directors.

The collected input informed the administration’s ultimate recommendation to change Elmhurst College’s name. The recommendation then was deliberated and endorsed by campus governance groups before going to the Board of Trustees for final approval.

The College’s Advisory Committee for Strategic Planning, which includes membership from the Board of Trustees, faculty, staff, students and alumni, will be asked to lead the transition effort. The committee will work with other campus stakeholders to ensure that all have the opportunity to participate in the planning and implementation of this historic initiative.

“Changing from college to university will now become part of that story,” VanAken says. “But the most important part has always been the transformative impact of an Elmhurst education on the lives of our students.

No matter what we call ourselves, that will always be the heart of our story.”

Golfers tee up to support Elmhurst YMCA programs

W

hen golfers tee off for the 31st annual Stone Open Golf Tournament July 19 they will be aiming for more than a hole in one.

The annual event has become an important part of the Elmhurst YMCA’s fundraising to support its scholarship fund, providing financial assistance to families and children and fulfilling a mission to keep people healthy and active.

“Last year we raised more than $15,000 at our golf outing and a majority of that goes right back to the scholarships we provide people in the community,” explains Angie Flesch, executive director for the Elmhurst YMCA. Scholarships can vary from sending a child to day camp to helping an adult with a fitness membership to maintain a healthy lifestyle.

“The need is definitely out there,” Flesch says. “People lose jobs, there are health issues, people need help and they know they can come to us and we can take care of them with confidentiality, style and grace.”

Elmhurst YMCA as a scholarship recipient to attend a day camp or swim lessons and flourished under the programs going on to become a program leader, camp counselor giving back through their own talents.

Assistance to the programming at the Elmhurst YMCA is more than a way to keep busy. For example Flesch says past scholarships have supported swim lessons.

“You can see our success through the impact we make on one child,” Flesch says.

“That is a life skill,” Flesch says.

Water safety is something that can save someone’s life.”

Exercise can provide physical and mental health benefits, and lest not forget the social benefits to making friends through activities too.

Schlager said last year the Elmhurst YMCA was able to provide $20,000 in scholarship funding for children to attend summer camp programs, which is the equivalent to sending 10 children to day camp for the entire summer. The camps serve children as young as 3 through high school-ages.

Schlager adds the ability for the Elmhurst YMCA to support families is one of the reasons he loves working for the organization. And that spirit is the same that inspires many golfers to return year after year for the annual outing.

The last few years Flesch has joined the fun on the links along with her family too.

“One year my husband’s team won the trophy, then the next year my son’s team won the trophy and the

past year my husband and son golfed together and their team won the trophy,” she says.

The golf outing is organized as scramble, meaning team members tee off and play off of whomever has the ball in the best position. The winning team takes home a large trophy, engraved with the team members’ names. Each year the prior winning team presents the trophy to the new winning team.

Flesch says teams are formed with friends, business associates and more and more women are playing in the outing too. The outing is hosted at Maple Meadows Golf Course in Wood Dale, complete with a delicious dinner, award presentation and course contests.

For Flesch being able to talk about support of the Elmhurst YMCA is more than a role she fulfills as the executive

director for the past six years. Flesch says she’s been with the organization more than 30 years, building a career around an organization that has supported so many in the community and beyond.

Flesch was a young mother walking into the Elmhurst YMCA to use the bathroom during her child’s Tee-Ball game and as she walked by a bulletin board she saw a posting that the facility needed preschool teachers.

That notice caught her attention and the young mother saw a calling.

From preschool teacher to executive director and all of the hats she’s worn along the way, Flesch says she doesn’t cease to see the value, the impact the Elmhurst YMCA has with individuals and the community, inspiring her work.

For purposes of this article, licensed independent investment professionals are defined as those who are not employed by a large securities firm that also custodies client assets. Instead, they are typically either self-employed or are employed by a firm that is owned and/or managed by self-employed industry professionals. Because these professionals are independent, they are not tied to any particular family of funds or investment products allowing them to more easily focus on your best interests.

What is the difference between a financial adviser and a financial advisor? Although the terms sound similar, investment advisers are not the same as financial advisors and should not be confused.  INVESTMENT ADVISER FINRA defines an investment adviser as “an individual or company who is paid for providing advice about securities to their clients.” They typically hold either a FINRA Series 65 or FINRA Series 66 securities license and as a result are an Investment Adviser Representative (IAR) of a Registered Investment Adviser Firm (RIA) and as such are a regulated fiduciary. As fiduciaries, they are held to the highest standard of care and are required to act in the best interests of their clients at all times. They are registered with either the Securities and Exchange Commission and/or state securities regulators and are typically compensated by the investor either paying a fee based on their assets being managed or by paying a negotiated fee for services rendered.  INVESTMENT ADVISOR The term financial advisor is a generic term that usually refers to a broker or a Registered Representative. Although a broker can, and often does, also provide advice the advice that they are providing is technically incidental to their primary role which is to facilitate suitable purchases and/or sales of securities for the investor. A broker’s compensation typically comes in the form of commissions or a mark-up on a security.  PLEASE NOTE Some financial professionals, like me and those at my firm, hold the necessary licenses to be able to act in both the aforementioned capacities and may do so based on what may best serve the client.

For example, we have clients who wish to have us manage the majority of their investments on a discretionary basis as a fiduciary (where I am an IAR) but also wish to have a smaller brokerage account in which they like to occasionally buy and sell stocks and would like our assistance in doing so (where I am a broker).

The number of independent financial advisors has grown significantly over the past few decades. Reasons for this growth can include: • A strong entrepreneurial drive.

• The desire to be unencumbered by proprietary investment products.

• The desire to create one’s own “brand”.

•The goal to focus on the client without other competing interests.

This year when I gather with friends and family to toast our great nation’s independence, I’ll raise my glass a second time to also honor independent advisers and advisors everywhere. Hope you’ll do the same!

Hot hands Summer trends in manicures are here, and clear

hether you get manicures for pampering, to have a finished look, or as a form of personal expression, there are some fun trends to consider for the summer. Here are some ideas to amp-up any routine, from the experts at Mario Tricoci.

“Nail trends are anything from chrome to matte, glitter to jelly, neon and sheer and everything in between,” says Tricoci’s Molly Sloat. “Summer is always a great time to experiment with nails and nail art shows no signs of slowing down.”

Yellow has grabbed the summer spotlight for color, and often is being shown paired with other bold colors like hot pink or black and white. ‘The scoop’ on homemade ice cream

alt & Straw Ice Cream Cookbook” (Clarkson Potter), by Tyler Malek and food writer JJ Goode, is the inspired book that ice cream lovers have long anticipated.

The eight-year-old Portland, Ore. business was cofounded by Tyler Malek and his cousin Kim Malek who serve, respectively, as head ice cream maker and CEO. The business started humbly as an ice cream cart serving eight flavors to 18 brick-andmortar locations creating more than 300 flavors.

Readers will find more than 100 recipes, including, the classic Sea Salt with Caramel Ribbons (below). Contents also cover equipment,

ingredients and techniques involved in making ice cream, gelato and sorbet.

One intriguing chapter focuses on integrating beer into the mix with recipes using Smoked Heffweizen, Hopped Farmhouse Ale and Imperial Stout Milk Sorbet with Blackberry-Fig Jam. SEA SALT WITH CARAMEL RIBBONS (MAKES ABOUT 2 PINTS) • 1 1/4 teaspoons fleur de sel • 3 cups Ice Cream Base, very cold (recipe on next page) • 1/2 cup Perfect Ice Cream Caramel (recipe on next page) Combine 1/4 cup water and the fleur de sel in a small saucepan, set it over medium heat and cook, stirring, just until the salt has completely dissolved, less than 1 minute. Let it cool to room temperature.

Put the ice cream base and the salt mixture into a bowl and whisk to combine. Pour the mixture into an ice cream maker and turn on the machine. Churn just until the mixture has the texture of soft-serve.

Put the caramel in a warm place or warm it in a small saucepan over very low heat just until it’s drizzleable, but not so warm that it will melt the ice cream.

Quickly alternate spooning layers of the ice cream and drizzling on a generous spiral of caramel in freezer-friendly containers.

Cover with parchment paper, pressing it to the surface of the ice cream so it adheres, then cover with a lid. It’s okay if the parchment hangs over the rim. Store in the coldest part of your freezer (farthest from the door) until firm, at least 6 hours. It will keep for up to 3 months.

ICE CREAM BASE (MAKES ABOUT 3 CUPS)

• 1/2 cup granulated sugar • 2 tablespoons dry milk powder • 1/4 teaspoon xanthan gum (available at most supermarkets) Combine the sugar, dry milk and xanthan gum in a small bowl and stir well.

Pour the corn syrup into a medium pot and stir in the whole milk. Add the sugar mixture and immediately whisk vigorously until smooth. Set the pot over medium heat and cook, stirring often and adjusting heat if necessary to prevent a simmer, until the sugar has fully dissolved, about 3 minutes. Remove the pot from the heat.

• 2 tablespoons light corn syrup • 1 1/3 cups whole milk • 1 1/3 cups heavy cream

Add the ice cream and whisk until fully combined. Transfer the mixture to an airtight container and refrigerate until well chilled, at least 6 hours, or for even better texture and flavor, 24 hours. Stir the base back together if it separates during the resting time. The base can be further stored in the fridge for up to 1 week ir in the freezer for up to 3 months.

(Just be sure to fully thaw the frozen base before using it.)

PERFECT ICE CREAM CARAMEL (MAKES ABOUT 1 3/4 CUPS) • 1 1/2 cups granulated sugar • 1/4 cup light corn syrup • 1 1/4 cups heavy cream Combine the sugar, corn syrup and 1/4 cup water in a medium saucepan, and stir until all of the sugar looks wet. Cover, set the pan over medium-high heat and cook, stirring occasionally, until the sugar has completely melted, about 3 minutes.

Continue to cook, covered but this time without stirring, until the mixture has thickened slightly, about 3 minutes.

Remove the lid and continue cooking without stirring but paying close attention, until the mixture turns the color of dark maple syrup, about 5 minutes more.

Take the pan off the heart and immediately and gradually pour in the cream, going slowly at first and then speeding up to a

Put the pan over medium-high heat again.

Attach a candy thermometer to the side of the pan. Let the mixture simmer away, stirring it occasionally, until it registers 230 degrees F on the thermometer, about 3 minutes. Take the pan off the heat and add the butter and salt, stirring slowly but constantly until the butter has completely melted.

Let the caramel cool to room temperature, then use it right away or transfer to an airtight container and refrigerate it for up to 2 weeks. Separation is totally normal; just make sure to stir the caramel well before using it.

2019 TRIP: MOUNTAIN BIKING THE CONTINENTAL DIVIDE WITH PETER STADALSKY

T

his summer I’m embarking on a trip I’ve been planning for more than a year and a half. Unsupported, I’m going to ride my mountain bike (no motor attached) from Banff, Canada down to the U.S./Mexico border. The route meanders along the spine of the entire Rocky Mountain range.

On my bike, I will cross over the divide 32 times, going through over 200,000 feet of elevation - that’s equivalent to climbing Mount Everest 7 times – the total route spanning approximately 3,000 miles. I will be carrying everything I need to eat, sleep, bathe and survive for the 55 days it will take to complete the route.

WHAT’S THE ROUTE LIKE?

The Great Divide Mountain Bike Route is the world’s longest off-road cycling route, established by the Adventure Cycling Association. More than two-thirds of the route is off road, with conditions ranging from old railroad routes, dirt forest service roads, and even carrying the bike up the side of a mountain. There will be times when I have to push my bike miles through marshes, carry my bike overhead to cross waist deep rivers, and drag my bike over snow covered peaks.

Joining me along the route will be grizzly bears, rattlesnakes, mountain lions, and javelinas. Every night when I camp, I will have to hang my food from a tree so the wildlife I’m sharing the forest with doesn’t get a free meal. (I’m hoping they won’t eat me for dinner, too.)

WHERE TO SLEEP?

One of the best parts of this trip is all the camping. What’s so enticing is that I’ll be camping in places that most people never go will go; mainly because of the extreme remoteness. Some of the areas I’ll be riding are hundreds of miles between small towns. I’m bringing a oneperson tent, about the width of coffin.

Basically, I can post up camp wherever I like along most of the route because I’ll be travelling through national forest land. There are established campgrounds along the way as well. I’ve also contacted some other cyclists along the route through a website, who have offered me their homes to wash up and get a good night’s rest.

WHAT TO EAT?

Bugs, lots of bugs. Well, not intentionally, but I’m sure some will get between my teeth on the downhill rides. In preparation for the trip, I already purchased the 55 days of food, compiled of freeze-dried meals and more granola bars and beef jerky than you’ve ever seen.

I’ve been packing away like a squirrel for a year. And as I couldn’t possibly carry all that food at once, I’ve boxed up food caches each containing seven days worth of food. Each cache will be sent to a post office or person’s home along the route that I will pick up. My awesome mother will be one of my support team members at home, adjusting food amounts on the fly and shipping out my next parcel.

All I know for sure is that everything I will need to live will be strapped to my bike or my back for the next two months and it’s going to be one heck of an adventure!
