Apparently, I was a perfect fit for the witch, as it only required the memorization of a couple of lines and a knack for cackling outweighed the need for a quality singing voice. I pulled off a decent performance as the Wicked Witch, and I even had a good time doing it despite the nerves.

My dance training experience is even sparser, having attended a handful of classes as a kid, somehow I always managed to accompany my “friend with rhythm.” In class, I often mirrored the likes of a comedic sidekick rather than a worthy opponent.

That’s why in this month’s A&E edition, we’re shining a spotlight on the stage – specifically performance art. Our cover story features a local dance company that tasks itself with training the artists of tomorrow and uses creative ways to celebrate the art of motion. We’ve also combed the county for the not-to-miss plays and musicals, from “South Pacific” to “Footloose,” coming to a venue near you.

In addition to performance art, we’re including a couple of features on the often undervalued literary arts, and we’re also highlighting the top fine arts festivals and headlining music acts of the summer.

Westmont dance company trains artists of tomorrow

By KELSEY O’CONNOR | Photos by RON McKINNEY For as long as she can remember, Jessica Garrett has been dancing.

While she first became serious about choreography in high school, Garrett has been creating and performing her own dances since she was a child.

“I knew I wanted to make choreography my career path at an early age,” says Garrett. “I was always making up a dance or putting on a performance. Even when I was very young, I was always putting on a show in my backyard.”

It was a natural hobby for someone who’d grown up with a musical family. Her mother and grandmother were both dancers, and her father played the guitar.

“Music has always been part of my life,” she says. “I always grew up with the arts, and my parents always pushed for us to be creative in whatever we did and find a creative solution.”

She channeled this creativity as she pursued a career in dance, first at Lincoln College near her hometown in central Illinois and later at Columbia College in Chicago.

During this time, she choreographed professionally for show choirs and musicals and performed during the summer at Six Flags amusement park.

Garrett also took up a role that would change the course of her career. She began teaching students at an after-school program in an inner city elementary school in Chicago. The dance instructor quickly became enamored with the work.

“I loved teaching kids with no experience who just really wanted to dance,” she says. “Seeing their joy and their love for that – that’s [when] I realized that teaching is what I was supposed to be doing.”

In 2012, she opened Dynamic Perception Dance Company in Westmont. The dance studio offers classes for children (preschool age through 18 years old) in a variety of different musical styles, including ballet, jazz, tap, hip hop, breakdancing, contemporary and more.

“For kids, learning to dance is so much more than the steps you teach them,” Garrett says. “They learn confidence, self-esteem, discipline. I find it 8 | MAY 2018 | SUBURBAN LIFE MAGAZINE

very empowering for young boys and girls to be able to express themselves in such a healthy way.”

Along with open-enrollment classes, Dynamic Perception hosts auditions for its competitive companies. These groups offer young dancers a chance to perform and compete in several events throughout the year. This year, auditions will take place Monday, June 18.

As the owner and artistic director, Garrett balances the logistical side of running a small business with the creative aspects of dance, which includes directing and choreographing the competitive company and its annual showcase performance.

“It’s what I think about all the time,” she says. “I’m always thinking of my next dance. My inspiration comes from just about everywhere. Music always inspires me; I can listen to most songs and think of something really cool or different.”

Garrett and her dancers have won numerous awards over the years, including bringing home the Top Studio award at the intermediate level from this year’s Kids Artistic Revue. While the recognition is nice, it’s not what drives Garrett’s passion to teach dance.

“The most rewarding part of my job is seeing the kids figure something out,” she says. “It’s that one light [bulb] moment when it just clicks. Their excitement brings me excitement.” mysuburbanlife.com/magazine

As the owner of A Book Above book shop – 136 W. Vallette St., Suite 6, Elmhurst – and founder of Readers Ignite – a literacy initiative for at-risk children – Carrillo has dedicated her life to giving kids equal access to books outside of school.

Carrillo, a single mom, first thought of the concept for a nonprofit organization and bookstore around 15 years ago, when she was looking for ways to spend quality time with her children.

Although she admittedly wasn’t a huge fan of reading, it didn’t take long for her to realize the importance of reading and how it was impacting not only her own children, but also children in every community.

“I didn’t really start this on purpose,” Carrillo says. “I started it because I

saw the need, and I really wanted to get involved.”

In a study done by Stanford University, researchers found that by three years of age, there is a 30-million word gap between children from the wealthiest and poorest families simply due to access to books.

“I’ve come to realize in our society, there are two distinct circles – they’re not racial, they’re literate,” Carrillo says. “Circles of literate people and lower literate people. There is very little overlap between those two circles, but my programs help to bring literacy awareness into the communities.”

Carrillo’s current community plans, which allow children to bring home books with them, include programs such as “Read to a Stuffie,” in which kids learn to read or look at books with a stuffed animal they keep; “Books on the Ball,” a program that connects athletic kids to books; and laundromat storytimes and barbershop partnerships. She also offers in-store programs, “The Sky’s the Limit” and “Explore and More,”

which focus on kids’ various passions and links those passions to reading. She also hosts literary presentations.

One of the places Carrillo has been active is Pee Wee’s Daycare Center in Maywood, where owner Addie Spence has been working with kids since she opened 32 years ago.

“She has just been wonderful with us,” says Spence, who was a teacher in public schools for 36 years.

“You wouldn’t believe the stuff she’s done. She’s given us books, and you just don’t really know how much they are appreciated.”

Carrillo has found that her programs work best when she can connect a book to a child’s specific passion, like baseball books for a baseball team or an airplane book for a kid infatuated with planes. She’ll often bring in guests, like a firefighter, and give the kids a book about firefighting to take home with them.

“By taking the child’s passion an linking it back to reading, now reading has power in their life,” Carrillo says, noting that the best feeling is when a parent sends a photo of a child reading a book after a presentation or event.

While donated books are always great, Carrillo says a lot of the popular books don’t actually get donated, and she prefers to give kids a new book they can call their own to bring home with them. She’s hoping to raise funds to help buy new books for all of her programs.

“The kids love the books because they can take them with them,” Spence says. “A lot of them would bring them back, and they would want to share their book with the other kids.”

But Carrillo can’t do it on her own, and she’s constantly looking for sponsors, businesses to work with and even volunteers to help make her vision a reality.

“People are more interested in volunteering for things when they see the fruit right away, like a food pantry or building a house, but literacy doesn’t work that way,” Carrillo says. “You really have to trust the process that it’s working; it just takes time.”

Carrillo’s own kids may be grown now, but she has dedicated her life to helping the youth of tomorrow by spreading the word about children’s literacy to anyone willing to listen.

“I think every child has amazing treasures inside him or her, and – if there’s nothing in their environment for them to see that – books are a way to help children see there’s something inside of them and to connect to it,” Carrillo says. “That’s what breaks my heart and that’s what drives all of this for me.”

Now that you have an idea of the varietals that are in a Bordeaux bottle of wine, how do you determine if it is good or not?

France’s “1855 Wine Classification� was created to establish the best wines in the region. The wineries were rated first-growth (the best) to fourth-growth; later a fifth-growth was added.

These ratings were based on the cost of the wines along with the reputation of the winery.

Sixty-one wineries were designated an “1855 Wine Classification,� and, though these original rankings have held up remarkably well over the past 160 years, it would be silly to think – with approximately 8,000 Chateaus in Bordeaux – that some of the originally-ranked Chateaus have not been surpassed by other wineries in quality or in value.

Like all wine, nothing on the label will guarantee that the wine will be to your liking. With wine, you have to hedge your bets and choose wines with the best pedigree and never be afraid to try something new. As always, it doesn’t have to be expensive to be good.

Here is a simple guide for buying Bordeaux wine and what to look for on the label: • AOC – This indicates that the wine has come from a specific region and is being held to governmental standards. • Château – The wine is from an individual vineyard and typically indicates wines of better quality. • Haut-MÊdoc or Pessac-LÊognan – These are two districts on the left bank that consistently produce excellent wines. (Left bank wines are cabernet-based blends) • St.-Emilion or Pomerol – These are two districts on the right bank that consistently produce excellent wines. (Right bank wines are merlot-based blends)

• Pauillac, St. Julien and Margaux – These are commune or villages that are known to produce great wines.

• Grand Cru ClassÊs – Designated as one of the 61-ranked wine estates of 1855 (very expensive). • Cru Bourgeois – A classification listing some of the châteaux from the MÊdoc that were not included in the 1855 classification. Wines labeled Grand Cru need a minimum of 10 years aging before being ready to drink, while Cru Bourgeois need at least five years of aging.

DIARY OF A MANLY ‘DANCE DAD’ | By JONATHAN BILYK

It’s a question I’ve been afraid to ask for a while, and it centers on Antonin Dvorak.

If you don’t know who that is, you can Google search it, or you can trust my assurances that Dvorak is one of the greatest composers to ever live.

Saying that, naturally, brings me back to my question. It’s been growing for quite some time, quietly, in the background of my thoughts, as Spotify plays through my headphones, and the rock musicians that still populate my playlists increasingly take a back seat to other genres, like classical.

As I’ve gotten older, my appreciation for classical music has grown.

I’ve discovered that I can identify quality classical music, and can admit with some degree of certainty that I actually have a favorite classical composer.

But what does this mean?

On one hand, it could mean – and this is the preferred answer – that my opinion has achieved a high degree of cultural sophistication. On the other hand, however, it could mean (and result in a harsh reaction from my inner younger person) that the man has merely grown old.

A similar conundrum emerged last December as I took in the 18th showing of “The Nutcracker” ballet in the last six years.

Many people – and men, in particular – would rather visit the dentist than sit through a single ballet performance, let alone more than a dozen.

A decade ago, despite my growing affinity for classical music and other markings of acculturation (or aging), I would have been among the number of men who would choose a dental office chair to a theater auditorium seat.

Though, I like to think, being something of a pseudo-Renaissance man, that I would have undeniably preferred two evenings at the ballet before ever preferring a day devoted to allowing a dental hygienist poke around my mouth with sharp metal instruments.

theater for three consecutive nights in December and applaud the physical feats, artistry and athletic prowess displayed by impressive ballet dancers in sequined costumes, as they perform the holiday tradition handed down to us from composer Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky.

to the amount of money transferred from my bank account.) But give me a few more years. While my inner uncouth younger, former self needs a bit of time to process it all, he may yet just come around – especially if a T-shirt is part of the deal.

Why? Because, for the past six years, those dancers have included my daughter and her friends, who have done nothing but impress me with their commitment to their art, dancing simply for the love of performance and for the off-chance that they might bring a smile to someone’s face. (Particularly if that someone may have thought, several years ago, that he’d prefer a dental exam to the ballet.)

He also doesn’t really like the moniker “Superdad” because it makes it sound like he wants to wear his undergarments on the outside of his pants.
