elegance excelle Salt Creek Ballet to host spring performances, gala event

T

he Salt Creek Ballet is raising the ‘barre’ in 2019, with hopes of expanding its renowned local facility and continuing to bring the community exceptional dance performance.

The acclaimed Westmont pre-professional ballet training and performance institution t has performed for more than 250,000 people in the Chicago area since its founding in 1985, while earning a national reputation for excellence in dance arts and education.

The dance company will be hosting an elegant and lively gala that will take place from 7 to 11 p.m on Friday, April 26, at the Hinsdale Golf Club in Clarendon Hills.

The gala will floor show by company dancers, a silent and live auction, dinner, drinks, music and many more surprises.

“Members of the company will perform excerpts from [the upcoming production of] Le Jardin Anime, and a special contemporary piece choreographed

by Eddy Ocampo,” says Artistic Director Sergey Kozadayev.

Ocampo is an internationally renowned contemporary choreographer and dance teacher.

His works have been performed by the Giordano Jazz Dance Chicago, Thodos Dance Chicago, Houston Metropolitan Dance Company, Odyssey Dance Company (Salt Lake City, UT), Kannon Dance (St. Petersburg, Russia), Lisa Clark Dancers (San Francisco, CA), Cerqua Rivera Dance Theatre and many regional ballet companies across the country.

The gala will benefit “Raising the Barre, Building Our Future,” a multi-year campaign to fund a new facility for Salt Creek Ballet. Tickets to the black-tie

only event are priced at $185 per person.

For those who appreciate ballet performance, a multi-tiered performance takes Salt Creek Ballet to the stage in May, bringing together works such as Le Jardin Anime, The Flower Festival and The Alarm, danced in the timeless tradition of classical Russian ballet. The ballet will be performed at the McAninch Arts Center, on the College of DuPage campus at 3 p.m. Saturday, May 18 and again at 1 p.m. Sunday, May 19.

Le Jardin Anime, Marius Petipa’s celebrated masterpiece is an excerpt from Le Corsaire, described by Kozadayev as a timeless, classical ballet.

llence Festival in Genzano is a delightful ballet that tells the story of young lovers, and the festival that is still celebrated in Genzano, Italy during the month of June.”

The Alarm, a contemporary piece, choreographed by internationally renowned choreographer, Eddy Ocampo, showcases Salt Creek Ballet’s diversity as dancers, he added.

This year, the production will feature internationally recognized guest dancer Yoshihisa Arai from the Joffrey Ballet. Born in Hiroshima, Japan, Arai trained at The International Ballet Academy and The Royal Ballet School in London.

He has performed with the Northern Ballet under the direction of David Nixon, and the Tulsa Ballet as a demi-soloist.

Ticket prices for both performances of Le Jardin Anime range from $32 for adults and $27 to $22 for seniors and kids 17 and younger.

Kozadayev said his hope is for the audience to come away from the production with a heightened appreciation of live performances.

Rehearsals, as much as 10 hours a week, started last fall. Dancers also are required to complete some 13 hours of classes each week.

“To perform such a ballet is unthinkable, unless the dancer is in tip-top shape,” he says.

The Salt Creek Ballet will cap off the season with the annual Spring Showcase, which includes dances performed by the School of Salt Creek Ballet, Pre-Ballet III to Company (ages 5 to 18).

The students will be dancing everything from ballet, contemporary and character, to tap, jazz, and modern dance styles.

Zen escap In today’s hectic world, we all need a quiet, peaceful place where we can relax, rejuvenate and unwind. And when beach vacations aren’t an option, creating a “private getaway” in your house or backyard can give you a sense of tranquility and the feeling of escaping from the rest of the world, if only for a while.

For those looking for a space reminiscent of an island getaway, adding simple touches can bring a tropical ambiance to your space. Plants like fiddle leaf figs, which don’t require a lot of care, faux palm foliage or candles with natural scents like chamomile or lavender can be inexpensive ways to brighten your rooms.

Bamboo or sheer fabric window treatments, or plantation shades can also give your home a more exotic and relaxing feel. Simple, light colors, rattan furniture and soft, natural light can make any room feel like a calming oasis in your home.

When it comes to creating a Zen-like environment in the bedroom or bathroom, using minimalist furniture, monochromatic colors and soft, organic fabrics can create a calming effect.

Converting a bathroom into a peaceful escape can run the gamut from adding a large, open shower or tub to incorporating small, budget-friendly changes like dimmer lights or burning woodsy, natural-scented candles.

Cynthia Passarelli, co-owner of Passarelli Builders and Design in Downers Grove, says it’s all about simplifying the space by de-cluttering and using clean lines and soft colors, like subtle blue or green. She says that higher-up horizontal windows are good ways to bring in calming natural light while maintaining privacy.

“A two-person shower or a steam shower with multiple heads can add a spa-like quality to a bathroom, and pebble tile on the flow is smooth, but will add texture,” she explains.

Creating your own outdoor paradise in northern Illinois in your backyard is not only doable, but can easily be done for those on a budget. Simply adding larger plants, like banana plants or even small palm trees in large containers, can give your patio a tropical feel.

Ways for Seniors to Stay Active During the Winter.

Winter in Illinois can be a difficult time for residents because of the inclement weather and its effects on the roadways and walkways throughout the city. This can be so discouraging that many people simply stay inside and attempt to wait out the winter.

While that may seem like a good idea on particularly bad days, people, unlike bears, are not meant to hibernate. We need exercise and activity to keep our health and spirits up, and there’s not much of that to be found in pajamas on the couch. So, while the weather outside may be frightful, there are still an incredible range of ways seniors can spend the wintertime being active.

• Enroll in a class that meets on a weekly basis - thow pottery, learn to play an instrument or pick up some new dance moves. You’re guaranteed to meet new friends and have fun doing it.

More and more, people are entertaining outdoors, and patios can often be turned into living rooms with comfy sofas, tables and even outdoor kitchens and bars.

Passarelli says that many of their clients are looking for outdoor living spaces, which can almost be like an extension of the family room or kitchen.

“It’s not just a yard anymore. People are entertaining and living outdoors,” Passarelli explains. “You can add a pond or small fountain to the backyard or a fire pit. Pergolas can identify a gathering space in your yard and can cover a dining area.

retty early in our marriage, my wife and I committed to a vacation principle.

Trust me, it’s far tastier than it sounds.

Whenever we would travel, we would strive to not just be stereotypical Midwestern tourists, nibbling on endless soup, salad and breadsticks at Olive Garden in Times Square.

Rather, we would always try, as often as possible, to eat like a local and sample the flavor of our destinations.

We’ve not yet been disappointed with the discoveries.

Often, though, the recommendations come from locals themselves, like a hotel concierge, Uber driver, construction worker, police officer, firefighter, or just someone we meet on the street.

The process is simple: Ask “Where do you like to eat around here?” Then, go forth with an open mind and empty stomach.

Early in our marriage, the vacation principle was easy and fun to uphold. Even after the birth of our first child, it required little modification, thanks to the firstborn’s ability and willingness to go with the flow, and try most anything.

Near the beach in Acapulco, fish tacos from a stand next to a patio on the side of the road.

Her almost-adult food preferences are legendary in my family. We still love to tell the story of the time she chose to push aside the chocolate cake for another bowl of salad.

In a neighborhood somewhere in L.A., kimchi carnitas cheese fries.

But with the arrival of the second, the tables have turned.

In central Texas, smoky, sizzling Tex-Mex fajitas and steaks as big as my head, all at a price that made us even hungrier.

While still not the pickiest eater we’ve ever encountered (most things can be washed down with the right amount of ketchup or ranch dressing), our youngest would be perfectly content crafting weekly dinner plans to include nothing but canned corn and macaroni and cheese, which she says must come from the “blue box.”

Closer to home, in Milwaukee, a Serbian meat-filled pastry dish called burek.

Further north along the Lake Michigan shore, smoked whitefish and meat pies called pasties.

While certainly budget friendly, the youngest’s dinner preferences often leave much to be desired in the way of complexity, if not nutrition. And it can present a real challenge when attempting something new.

During a recent excursion to Philadelphia, my oldest thoroughly enjoyed the taste-testing challenge of ranking Philly’s best cheesesteaks. The younger,

however, usually had to be cajoled even to take a bite at most of the famous stands.

The problem? She didn’t recognize what she was eating, so she was sure she “didn’t like it.”

While the crumbs and grease stains left on the wrapper from what had been her portion testified to the falsity of that statement, it has never stopped her from loudly proclaiming her disdain, time and again.

Fortunately, the younger is still at the age at which most people just smile and laugh, even if she insults something they’ve spent hours preparing.

So, for now, we’re using the borrowed “Aw, she’s so cute” giggle phase to gently continue the palate expansion exercise, even if it’s just an occasional bite of something a bit new or even exotic, stolen amid a plate otherwise full of chicken strips and fries, drenched in ketchup.

And we’re always open to suggestions, for both child dinner training and recommendations for outstanding local joints, anywhere.

Sports are an excellent way to keep children active, off the couch and most importantly off their electronic devices. Each sport requires a certain level of strength, flexibility, coordination and balance to be played. When these requirements do not meet the demand of the sport an athlete may be at an increased risk for injury.

Currently, there are an estimated 60 million youth athletes that participate in some form of organized sports. Of those 60 million over half of those children get injured! They can get treatment after the injury, but wouldn’t it be nice if something existed that could reduce the risk of injury in the first place? The Athletic Movement Screen was designed for exactly that purpose. The screen examines functional movement patterns of an athlete to determine if their athletic performance and risk of injury are affected by the way they move.

- Outpatient physical therapy - One on one care by licensed physical therapists only of posture, running, and walking, a Functional Movement Screen and a home exercise program to correct movement faults.

The postural analysis examines an athlete from head to toe in multiple planes of motion. By seeing how your athlete moves, the PT can determine what muscles are working too hard and putting stress on the bones and which muscles aren’t working enough. This helps provide the physical therapist with information regarding the athlete’s current movement patterns and a prediction of future movement patterns and habits.

- Functional movement screens

Next comes the gait and running analysis. These assessments look to see how the athlete’s body works when moving. The physical therapist will screen the ankles, knees, hips and upper body and propose insight as to how an athlete can improve his or her running and walking mechanics.

The physical therapist performs the Functional Movement Screen next. This screen examines motor control, stability and mobility throughout the body using a series of seven fundamental movement patterns. The goal of the functional movement screen is to identify areas of movement which an athlete can improve in order to become more efficient at moving during a sport or daily activities. This will decrease stress through the body and decrease risk of injury.

After all the information from the Athletic Movement Screen is gathered, the athlete will be given a written summary of the results. The summary includes what the athlete does well and areas in which the athlete can improve. The athlete is then given exercises to perform over the course of six to eight weeks in order to enhance movement efficiency.

These assigned exercises are specifically designed to address the poor movement patterns discovered in the screen.

When the athlete follows up with the physical therapist, a 30-minute re-screening is performed to detect areas in which the athlete improved and areas in which the athlete may still need improvement.

Looking for a ‘staycation’ that’s more than the everyday? A short trip outside the Tri-Cities can get you a day of escape with a good night’s sleep in your own bed. Try these nearby destinations to quench your thirst for travel, without the packing:  LaSalle County Less than two hours away is the home of one of the top tourist attractions in Illinois. LaSalle County, which boasts opportunities for fun and adventure for everyone, is the home of Starved Rock State Park. The 2,000-acre park is filled with breathtaking sandstone canyons, waterfalls hiking and horseback riding trails. There are potential wildlife sightings throughout the year including deer, bald eagles and a variety of migratory birds.

Other parks in the area are Buffalo Rock State Park and Matthiessen State Park. The entire area along the Illinois River, offers fishing (including ice fishing if the weather is cold), camping, hunting, and access to hiking, biking and equestrian trails.

History buffs will enjoy historical landmarks including the Hegeler Carus Mansion in LaSalle, Reddick Mansion and Gardens in Ottawa and the Westclox Museum in Peru. The LaSalle County Historical Society has exhibits including a blacksmith’s shop and one-room schoolhouse.

Nearby wineries include August Hill Winery and Illinois Sparking Co. in Utica which features a tasting room, eatery, displays of artwork by local craftspeople and live musical entertainment on Fridays and Saturdays.

Catering to families is the Grizzly Jack Grand Bear Resort in Utica, which features an indoor waterpark.

There are abundant shopping opportunities, especially for devotees of antiquities and art.

 Galena Country Nestled in the northwest corner of Illinois, beautiful Galena is a small but vibrant town of historical significance. Galena hosts the Galena and U.S. Grant Museum honoring the town’s most famous resident, Ulysses S. Grant. Visits can be made to the DeSoto House Hotel, the oldest operating hotel in Illinois, from which Grant ran his presidential campaign.

Elihu Washburne’s home, which is open to the public, was where Grant received news that he’d been elected. Other historical sites include a variety of fascinating museums.

Visitors can enjoy Galena’s Helluva Half Mile, the downtown shopping destination featuring boutiques, shops, and galleries with numerous eateries in which to stop and replenish.

Don’t Wait For

I

t’s very early Thursday morning, January 17th, and my cell phone is ringing. My sister sounds distressed. Our almost 87-year-old mother had called her moments ago telling her that something was wrong.

She had fallen repeatedly and could not regain her balance. Mom says she thinks she needs to go to the hospital and then her line goes silent. Mom had a stroke.

At a time like this I’m glad that we didn’t have to worry about anything other than getting the best care possible.

Fortunately, the day we had hoped would never happen had been planned for since 1996 when Dad died. Dad had valiantly fought various cancers for 16 years with Mom by his side every step of the way. The carousel of physical, emotional, and financial pain had been a cruel teacher and the first thing we did after his death was secure an exceptional Long Term Care insurance policy for Mom. Here’s why you should plan accordingly.

If you don’t own Long Term Care insurance unfortunately these costs become your problem as other forms of insurance do not cover LTC expenses • Health Insurance - Does not pay for LTC • Medicaid - Will not help until assets are depleted and the patient is impoverished - Only pays for nursing home coverage, not home care • Medicare (only over age 65) - Only in limited situations, after being hospitalized - Full coverage for only 20 days • Disability Insurance - These funds may be used. However, disability insurance protects income allocated for normal everyday expenses - Coverage only while working

With life expectancies increasing by 30 years over the past century we are now at a point where 70% of those who reach age 65 will need some form of long-term care in their lifetime.1 You may be surprised to learn that more than half of those receiving Long Term Care today are receiving care in their home. The second most common location for receiving care are nursing homes followed closely by care being received in an assisted living facility.2 The costs can be staggering 3 .

Let’s recap. Long Term Care needs are not just a reality but are a probability.

Care is expensive, and other traditional forms of insurance don’t cover LTC. Although space constraints will not allow us to discuss different types of coverage in the detail you’ll want to cover when you meet with an advisor, here are some elements you will want to keep in mind: WHO’S UNDERWRITING THE RISK? We recommend that you carefully assess not just the ratings of the underwriting insurance company but also examine the company’s experience in this line of business. History has not been kind to companies that jumped into the market with aggressive pricing only to discover later that they had underestimated the risk.

TYPE OF LTC POLICY: make sure you understand the differences and select one of the following that best fits your situation: • Traditional Individual LTC Policies • Asset-Based LTC Policies • Permanent Life Insurance with an LTC Accelerated Benefit Rider BENEFIT STRUCTURE: Reimbursement Vs Indemnity: Most policies require that receipts be submitted before the insurance company reimburses the beneficiary once they go on claim. Conversely, some policies simply indemnify the beneficiary once they go on claim and pay out the contract’s maximum daily or monthly benefit. Indemnification is easier and expedient.

Skilled Care AND Home Health Care. Most of us would prefer to receive care at home if possible. Make sure that your home health care benefit is as generous as skilled care benefits are.
