In 1975, Hal Honeyman made a bold move. At the time he was a college student working part time in a bike shop. When an opportunity to buy the shop arose, Honeyman brought the idea to his family. And together, they… “Just jumped off the cliff,” Honeyman said. Fifty years later, the family business is still soaring.

A St. Charles institution, The Bike Rack sells a wide range of bikes, from road and mountain bikes to those designed for riders with varying needs and abilities. Among its more unique offerings are recumbent bikes, which provide a greater level of support and require less exertion for the rider than traditional models, and adult-sized trikes, which allow for additional stability by way of a third wheel.

“We have customers riding 100 miles a day at 60 years old,” said Honeyman, adding that electric assistance is another huge benefit to riders. “People are out there riding and improving their quality of life tremendously.”

In addition to its retail selection, The Bike Rack is known for the care and consideration staff put into finding the perfect fit for riders, utilizing a number of tools such as motion capture and pressure mapping.

“With mapping, we can see all the pressure points and we can try out different saddles,” said Honeyman, adding that the goal is remove a rider’s “hot spots” so as to eliminate any pain caused by cycling. “We have technology that will take the guesswork out and provide a better experience.”

Call or stop by The Bike Rack and you’re sure to see 88-year-old family matriarch Nancy Honeyman.

For nearly five decades, Nancy amazed customers with her ability to size a bike to any rider, somehow managing to straddle the front wheel and instruct the rider to put their feet on the pedals while she held the bike up with one hand, no matter their size. These days, she’s taken a less physical but just as important role, managing all incoming phone calls and answering every question with her deep knowledge of the store and cycling in general.

Nancy Honeyman remains a presence at the store, working alongside her family. Her husband, Dale, is such an important part of The Bike Rack’s history and, despite his passing in 2021, he lives on everyday in the strength of his beloved wife and the rest of their close-knit family.

“Working with all of our children most every day has been the best part of owning our own family business,” Nancy Honeyman said. “Not just working with our kids, but our grandkids and now

even our great grandchildren come in and spend time here.”

Nancy Honeyman also cherishes the relationships she’s made with those who have worked at the store over the decades.

“We have had such amazing kids who came to us when they were teenagers and would stay with us through college,” she said. “We even have some of those same kids still help us out for special events or if we need some extra help.”

The Bike Rack takes part in numerous community cycling events every year, providing logistical as well as mechanical support to participants. The business is also behind Project Mobility, which supplies adaptive bikes, specially fabricated and fit to meet a huge range of abilities, to disabled children, adults and soldiers. The nonprofit puts on events throughout the region, including at children’s and VA hospitals.

“Many times, it’s the first time someone in a

wheelchair has gotten on a bike,” said Honeyman, who has a personal connection to helping individuals with motor impairments. His son, Jacob, was diagnosed with cerebral palsy as a baby. “We give people that freedom and they smile ear to ear. You take someone with a spinal cord injury or brain injury and they’re getting some of their mobility back. That smile never gets old. It’s life changing.”

Hal Honeyman also finds an immense sense of gratification in his work with wounded veterans.

“I’ll see someone three years after I put them on an adaptive bike and they’ll tell me ‘I would not be alive today if you hadn’t gotten me on a bike,” he recounted.

“We’re pretty blessed to have that experience.”

Is riding an electric bike

exercise?

The number of people riding electric bikes has grown significantly in the past few years, and even with their popularity I’m still often asked, is riding an electric bike really exercise? I respond more than ever “of course it is, and the best part is, it is enjoyable at the same time.” Riding an e-bike still requires pedaling which will elevate your heart rate and provide cardiovascular benefits with the intensity options riders are looking for. These bikes offer low to moderate assistance which can be beneficial for people who are less active or want to gradually increase their exercise level; up to little assistance for those that are looking for more of a work out. It’s your choice. Electric bikes can take you on routes that you may have avoided in the past because of hills and distance. One of the testimonials we hear most often is ‘the electric bike helps

people know they can finish a long route with out running out of energy before the end of the ride.’ That is a game changer. When you take that extended ride, you are exercising longer, keeping your heart rate where you want it, and even enjoying it more. We like to say, “the difference between riding an e-bike and riding a standard bike is your luxury of choice.” Now you can ride to lunch in the next town AND BACK without hesitation. The fitness options and convenience of an electric bike is getting the attention of people of all ages, and we can see why. We all know exercise is important, and now we can even enjoy it.

A Network to Freedom

Nineteenth-Century abolitionists who helped freedom seekers reach the North or Canada via the Underground Railroad frequently used routes along rivers.

The contemporary Fox River Trail fits that description, and through extensive research, St. Charles History Museum archivist and curator Eric Krupa confirms that “thousands of freedom seekers came through here.”

Now Krupa and cohorts in DeKalb and DuPage counties hope thousands more will learn more about the antislavery efforts in northern Illinois before President Abraham Lincoln issued the Emancipation Proclamation in 1863.

Efforts are afoot to help various locations in the region

gain federal recognition as UGRR sites through the National Park Service’s Network to Freedom.

“There’s so many stories about this area that we just haven’t heard,” Krupa said, “and our role in Kane County has been completely glossed over in the national history books.”

In March, Krupa discussed more about Kane County’s history with the UGRR as part of a River Corridor Foundation of St. Charles lecture series presentation at Baker Community Center.

A workshop with Barry Jurgensen, Midwest regional manager for the Network to Freedom program, is planned for April 14 as the St. Charles History Museum aims to offer further information to the public about the latest developments relating to NPS recognition.

Krupa has collaborated with Jurgensen before, assisting with research that connected the final steps of the journey of formerly enslaved women Celia and Eliza Grayson from near Nebraska City, Neb., to Chicago.

The Graysons arrived in Campton Hills on Feb. 1, 1859, before moving along to shelter in Robert Finley’s home in St. Charles.

“We kind of helped complete the storyline, which is not easy to do but we got lucky with people giving us sources and stories from back in the 1800s,” Krupa said.

Admittedly no stranger to “deep dives,” Krupa grew up in Geneva with an interest in the UGRR. He recalls learning in third grade, for instance, that the St. Charles home of James T. Wheeler also was recognized as a spot for assisting and housing freedom seekers.

Helping further the project, then, has at times felt like an extension of that early curiosity.

Albeit an extremely involved one.

“To really find the trail, you take everything you can get. You take secondary sources, you take journals. Obviously, the maps are crucial. The 1860 atlases. We’re lucky that we have a lot of good maps around here,” Krupa said. “Then you kind of go into each person, the newspapers. I went to Chicago, to other places, to do research in different archives. It’s really like an all-hands-on-deck kind of thing, going out to every source you can possibly find.”

Krupa cites previous work from Jeanne Schultz Angel on the efforts of the Kane County Anti-Slavery Society for helping hid research.

He’s eager to keep it going as the project progresses.

“Everybody has been so honestly thrilled and happy about it,” Krupa said. “I’ve just been so happy about the support we’ve received, especially with the homeowners and the general public, too.”

TRAIL MAPS

Once upon a time a long time ago, John Muir said, “In every walk with nature, one receives far more than he seeks.”

Muir, who was known as the Father of the National Parks, certainly had a way with words, as visiting the trails regularly can improve your physical, mental and emotional health, boost your mood, reduce stress and provide an opportunity to slow down and connect spiritually.

As author Mary Davis says, “A walk in nature walks the soul back home.”

For whatever reason you choose to get outside and hit the trails, take advantage of the blessings of living close to these wonderful ones throughout Kane and Kendall counties that will help free yourself from the daily grind of everyday life and its many challenges.

So where are you heading? Check out these trail maps to assist you on your journey with Mother Nature and be sure to check out a few of the many treasure map locations along the way.
