Taking in history at the Newseum In late May, I spent two days in Washington, D.C., for a family event. I’d been to D.C. once before and had seen many of the well-known monuments and sights. But the one place I wanted to visit on this trip wasn’t even open when I was last in D.C. – the Newseum. Seeing it in writing, it’s probably somewhat easy to discern that the Newseum is a news museum. Not necessarily the case when the museum’s name is first spoken aloud. Prior to visiting the site, which is dedicated to free expression and the five freedoms of the First Amendment – religion, speech, press, assembly and petition – I mentioned to several family members and friends that I wanted to visit the Newseum, a phrase often followed by the question, “Which museum?” “The Newseum.” “Wait, where?” “The News-eum. It a news museum. A museum dedicated to news.” “Ohhhhh. Newseum.” Yes, there is a news museum. It

The Newseum is just awesome, and – though not everyone has yet heard of it – many others have already visited. “ ... more than 6 million have visited its modern building located on historic Pennsylvania Avenue between the United States Capitol and the White House,” states the Newseum website, www.newseum.org. “ ... Among the most memorable exhibits are the 9/11 Gallery sponsored by Comcast featuring the broadcast antennae from the top of the World Trade Center, the Berlin Wall Gallery whose eight concrete sections are one of the largest pieces of the original wall outside Germany, and the Pulitzer Prize Photographs Gallery that features photographs from every

Pulitzer Prize-winning entry dating back to 1942.” I spent half a day at the Newseum and could easily have spent more time there. Many of the Pulitzer photos tugged at my heart, whereas a sports reporting documentary narrated by Ahmad Rashad got me pumped up. The News Corp. News History Gallery was probably my favorite part of the Newseum. It’s the largest gallery there and showcases the history of news gathering, as well as more than 300 historic front pages. If you’re a news fan and in D.C., I’d recommend a stop at the Newseum. And – if you’re a member of the media – be sure to bring your press badge, as you’re likely eligible for a discount.

Library partakes in adult coloring craze By NATALIE JUNS editorial@kcchronicle.com SUGAR GROVE – Coloring isn’t just for kids anymore. Adults all over the world are partaking in the coloring craze for a number of reasons. There are many physical and emotional benefits such as relaxation and stress relief. Anyone interested in relaxing with and meeting new friends will have an opportunity this summer through the Sugar Grove Public Library’s new Coffee, Coloring & Conversation Club. The new club will meet in the library’s enclosed porch over the course of three months, from 10:30 to 11:30 a.m. June 13, July 11 and Aug. 8. The porch is furnished with wicker furniture including tables, couches and chairs. The Coffee, Coloring & Conversation Club will offer an hour of relaxation where adults, 18 years and older, will have the opportunity to color in intricate pages, chat with others and

Fund set up for county worker killed in crash By VIOLET MARQUARDT editorial@kcchronicle.com Described as a hard worker by Kane County Division of Transportation Director Carl Schoedel, Steven Chidester of Cortland spent the last four and a half years of his life working for KDOT. The 44-year-old began working for the transportation department as a “snowbird,” the term used for seasonal workers who plow snow, and he was later hired on in the spring as a full-time Steve Chidester worker, Schoedel said. “Personally, I didn’t have the privilege of knowing him that well,” Schoedel said. “But he was a really hard worker who enjoyed his job.” While working on road detail for

Variety, freshness flavor new Sugar Grove Farmers Market season By CHRIS WALKER editorial@kcchronicle.com SUGAR GROVE – The weather wasn’t accommodating June 4, but that didn’t stop residents from visiting the Sugar Grove Farmers Market for its opening day. The weekly event, held from 8 a.m. to noon each Saturday, gives residents a chance to buy fresh produce and desserts, as well as an assortment of other gifts and products – many from Sugar Grove or neighboring businesses. During the opening, Norway Farms Produce of Sheridan had broccoli, potatoes, tomatoes, onions, asparagus, apricots and honey for sale. Their offerings should continue to increase, with sweet corn and strawberries among other seasonal items to come later this summer. Cupcakes by Chelsea also had a table at the market. The Aurora business has been a market staple for the past three years. “It’s nice to visit with the people that come by,” owner Chelsea Turner said. “For me, baking is a stress relief, and it’s nice to share cupcakes and cakes with Sugar Grove residents.” One business that’s always been associated with the market is Grandma’s Farm Fresh Eggs of Sugar Grove, which offers a variety of eggs and other items. “It’s a lot of fun to be out here, especially because of the kids,” owner Charlotte St. John said. “We’ve had green eggs before and the kids go crazy to their moms about wanting the green eggs because of the ‘Green Eggs and Ham’ story. It’s a lot of fun for them

and it’s also nice to see people from the community support local business.” Not all the items at the market are to be consumed, as local Spice Jar Designs continues to offer many gift items. “I’ve got a lot of jewelry and crocheted items,” owner Jessie Hoerdeman said. “I’m hopeful that there’s something that people see here that they’re interested in.” Steve Brown, new owner of Big Fat Soap in Montgomery, made his first appearance at the market June 4 to introduce his soaps to the community. “I’m just getting started with this, so we wanted to make a presence,” Brown said. “I can tell you that my house smells great right now. For the second time in her life, the 19-year-old from Sugar Grove has been diagnosed with Ewing’s sarcoma, a rare bone cancer that typically affects young people. “She says she’s done it [beat cancer] before and she can do it again,” said her mother, Vickie Pratte. “She’s very positive and she inspires a lot of people by how well Julia Pratte she takes it.” A group of Pratte’s friends from Kaneland High School have coordinated a July 17 benefit at the Elburn Lions Club to help with her medical expenses. Vicki Pratte said her daughter also has autism, which has caused developmental delays. “This fall should be [Julia’s] senior year, but with her treatment schedule, that may be up in the air,” Vicki Pratte said. She explained the cancer was found in her daughter’s clavicle (collarbone), and most of the bone was removed,

One of the organizers, Bryanna Stroiber, was a neighbor of the Pratte family and grew closer to Julia Pratte as a leader for Pratte’s adaptive physical education class for two years. While planning the event, Stroiber contacted Paisano’s Pizza & Grill. Owners Annette and Dick Theobald gladly agreed to help with food, even though they don’t know the Pratte family personally. “We are always willing to help out with community events,” Annette Theobald said. “One of our mottos is that business has the responsibility to give back to the community. The community supports our business and we know they have other choices. Homeless man pleads guilty in sex assault ST. CHARLES TOWNSHIP – A homeless man will go to prison for sexually assaulting the child of a family he had befriended, Kane County prosecutors stated in a news release. Jay A. Davies, 53, agreed to a sentence of eight years in prison in exchange for a guilty plea to criminal sexual assault, a felony, the release stated. Kane County Circuit Judge John Barsanti Jay A. Davies accepted the plea June 3. Kane County prosecutors presented evidence that on the evening of June 25, 2015, Davies sexually assaulted the victim with force, and that he knew the victim, who was younger than 18

years old at the time, according to the release. In addition to the prison term, Davies must register for life as a sexual offender in accordance with the Illinois Sexual Offender Registration Act, the release stated. According to Illinois law, Davies must serve at least 85 percent of the sentence. He was given credit for 344 days served in the Kane County Jail, where he had been held since his arrest in lieu of $250,000 bail, the release stated. Bond was revoked upon conviction, the release stated. The case was investigated by the Kane County Child Advocacy Center, with assistance from Batavia police. Kane County Assistant State’s Attorney Lori Schmidt, who is assigned to the Child Advocacy Center, prosecuted Davies.

Elburn’s semiannual Swap Shop helps area families By DEBBIE BEHRENDS editorial@kcchronicle.com ELBURN – Nicole Dulski has a passion for helping people. She said that’s what makes the Authentic Moms’ semiannual Swap Shop at the Elburn and Countryside Community Center so rewarding. “The most rewarding thing is being able to see God meet the needs of people in such unique and beautiful ways,” Dulski said. “We had multiple families come in after driving by one of our signs. Two of those families are fostering [other] family members’ children.” In May and November of each year, Dulski and a dedicated team of 10 volunteers spend a Thursday evening setting up tables, clothing racks and other shelving in the gym. It takes about 12 hours on Friday to sort and arrange the donations. Dulski said the group on May 13 consisted of longtime helpers and a few new faces, from adults and teens to older children. Doors opened to shoppers on Saturday morning. Dunkin’ Donuts of Elburn provided dozens of sweet treats, which event organizers were able to offer in return for a donation. Proceeds were sent back to the community cen-

Many years ago, my own high school graduation ceremony took place in our high school gymnasium. My about 700 classmates and I were each given exactly four tickets to use at our discretion. It was like winning the lottery if your friend only needed two tickets and you needed six. It was a perfect match! Originated by a loosely organized group calling themselves the Authentic Moms, Dulski said Swap Shop is a rare and unique event because it allows families in all different stages of life to be blessed with items they need without spending any money. “You don’t have to be struggling to see its benefits,” she said. “Who wouldn’t rather utilize their paycheck to pay off a bill or maybe treat the family to a mini vacation or dinner out instead of having to buy hundreds of dollars of clothing and shoes at a department store?” A mother of seven, Dulski said she is grateful for providing her family with merchandise they needed. In fact, she shared that she and her husband are in the final stage of adopting the children they have been fostering. Her story is not unique among

Another man shared that he and his wife were able to get things needed for the grandchildren they are raising. “At the heart of Swap Shop is a love and reverence for God and desiring to live out his will for us in our lives,” Dulski said. “What compels us is God’s love that we have experienced through his son, Jesus. All of this is for God’s glory and for others to be reminded that He is the one who truly provides for our every need.” At the end of the event, leftover merchandise is donated to churches and other agencies that help people in need. Is there really a ‘milkshake’ on that driveway? The woman’s voice quavered in agitation as she described her predicament. “I have a milkshake on my driveway,” she squeaked over the phone, her words barely discernible above the squeals emanating from her equally distraught children. I winced as I listened, thinking back to the time I watched a Superdawg chocolate shake meet a similar fate on a sidewalk in Park Ridge. But before I could commiserate, as well as wonder why the woman was calling a nature center to share her misfortune, she continued with her story. “It’s been there for almost an hour. I was thinking I’d put it in a fruit jar and bring it to you, but that’s when I thought I’d better call and ask if that’s the right thing to do.” Remembering my own dairy debacle, I knew the last thing I wanted to do was save the sad remains in a jar, let alone bring them somewhere. Utterly confused, I was about to suggest the woman just hose away the whole mess. But then she spoke a few more sentences and the details of her dilemma emerged. “I don’t want it to bite me. And it’s so little. I’m wondering if it just

The caller wasn’t describing a “milkshake,” as in sweet elixir, but rather a “milk snake,” as in Lampropeltis triangulum triangulum – one of our area’s most colorful, and secretive, snakes. Decked out in a vibrant mix of black, red and creamy white, the eastern milksnake looks anything but native. Its bold blotches seem far too flamboyant to be included among our region’s herpetofauna, which typically bear more conservative hues of green, black and brown. If you’ve never been lucky enough to see a wild milk snake, don’t feel too left out – you’re not alone. The species just isn’t that prevalent, at least in Kane County. The common name milksnake comes from the animal’s habit of hanging out around farms, where they do a bang-up job of keeping rodent populations under control. But as farms have ebbed from the local

They love hiding beneath rocks and debris, and frequently overtake burrows of critters such as ground squirrels and woodchucks. Unless you catch them basking (on, like, say a driveway) you really have to look hard to find them. To top it off, milk snakes are prized by collectors. If and when they do appear, they often are snapped up and either sold or kept as pets. BATAVIA – A for sale sign has led to some confusion for a small Batavia business. Furniture Dollies Ltd., 239 E. Wilson St., Batavia, specializes in finding discarded vintage and antique furniture and refinishing it. While the shop is open, the building’s sale has led some customers to assume Furniture Dollies is closing, said Missy Scardina and Paula Carsi, two of the owners. “We love the space we’re in. The difficult thing is we’ve been there a year and a half, and it’s been for sale three times,” Scardina said. “People always think we’re closing, and that’s been hard for business,” Carsi said. The store opened in November 2014, and – in addition to the furniture – Furniture Dollies also offers other home decor, accessories and even hand-crafted jewelry and art. “We take old furniture and fix it and paint it and distress it and update it. It’s good sturdy furniture, and it’s unusual,” Carsi said. “They’re statement pieces.” Landlord Stacy Ferguson, who uses the upstairs space for his business, Ferguson Surveying, said the building

is zoned for commercial on the bottom floor where Furniture Dollies is located, and can be either commercial or residential upstairs. A Batavia resident for 28 years, he thinks the location is very attractive. “The house is on the historical charter, and it’s one of the houses on the Batavia historical walks,” he said. “There are a lot interesting facts about the house.” Ferguson and the Furniture Dollies owners have an agreement that each will give the other 30 days’ notice if the building sells, or if the shop wants to move. “[Stacy] has been very accommodating,” Carsi said. Scardina did indicate that Furniture Dollies would like to move a little closer to downtown Batavia but have no plans to leave the city. All of the Furniture Dollies owners are longtime Batavia residents. “We’d like to be a little closer to downtown for more foot traffic,” she said. Both Scardina and Carsi said the cost of rent in downtown Batavia, as well as the length of available leases, has been prohibitive to the business moving. Carsi said a deal was almost in place for the shop to move to a larger location that would

Both Carsi and Scardina talked about the need for not only more retail space, but also more storage space for the furniture they sell. “People will come in and ask about a piece, but we have it in storage. Top-Pick Athletics training facility moves into Sugar Grove By SUZANNE FLYNN editorial@kcchronicle.com SUGAR GROVE – Top-Pick Athletics will open its doors late this summer with new equipment, modern technology and much more for teams and individual athletes. When it originally opened six years ago in North Aurora, as a multi-sport training facility, Top-Pick Athletics never thought it’d outgrow that facility in such a short time. “We are drawing larger organizations and we quickly outgrew our old facility,” said Perry Clark, a partner at TopPick Athletics. The team considered sites in Montgomery and North Au-

rora before deciding on its new Sugar Grove location, Clark said. “Ultimately it came down to three reasons why we chose Sugar Grove – the convenience and accessibility for our customers; the growth potential for our business; and it was a personal decision for me being a longtime Sugar Grove resident and community member,” he said. Clark has been a Sugar Grove resident for 26 years and is entering his 20th year as the head softball coach at Waubonsee Community College. “Selecting the property at the Waubonsee Corporate Center at Route 47 and Heartland Drive was a no brainer for

me,” Clark said. Top-Pick Athletics started in 2010 when five coaches decided a space was lacking for experienced athletes to learn, train and grow in their specific sport. The new 15,000-square-foot facility in Sugar Grove will include 7,500 square feet of highend synthetic turf surface laid over stone, which will provide a softer surface for athletes to play on, Clark said. “We are getting contacted by many teams, even local high schools, requesting field time just because of our turf,” he said. The facility will also have 4,500 square feet of hitting and pitching tunnels for the baseball and

Top-Pick Athletics currently trains competitive baseball, softball, football, soccer and lacrosse teams from the Fox Valley area, including St. Charles, Oswego, Naperville and DeKalb. Sugar Grove Village President Sean Michels said the village is excited to have TopPick come to Sugar Grove. “Not only are they helping these young athletes become better athletes, [but] they also will help the community grow by bringing in a lot of retail business, and that is thrilling for the city,” Michels said. The new, larger facility will also offer more to the Sugar Grove community, including

some soccer programs for younger kids starting in the fall. These Sugar Grove Park District programs will be for preschool-age children to participate in during the day with mom or dad, Clark said. Clark added the tentative grand opening for the new location at 769 Heartland Drive will be sometime in August or September. “We are about 60 days off from our anticipated opening date, but that’s to be expected with the rain and cold weather we had this spring,” he said. “Everything is moving along nicely and the city has been great to work with when we’ve had any questions or issues in regard to construction.”

editorial@kcchronicle.com An “overwhelming” and “unmanageable” response at Kane County’s most recent recycling events in St. Charles has prompted the county to suspend its free electronics recycling program, according to a news release issued June 1. “The county is working on solutions to the electronics recycling problem and hopes to reinstate the monthly electronics collection event once additional drop-off locations are available,” the release stated. “The county recycling coordinator, Jennifer Jarland, is focusing solely on that project. The long-term sustainable solution lies in spreading the load and providing conveniently located dropoffs with weekday hours.” The recycling extravaganza set for 8 a.m. to noon June 11 at Kane County Branch Court, 540 S. Randall Road, St. Charles, will still be held, but the release stated that electronics will not be accepted. Accepted items will include books, bikes, bike parts, helmets, wheelchairs, sewing machines, styrofoam, bubble wrap and 4-foot fluorescent tubes, the release stated. It indicated liquid latex paint will be accepted for a fee – $2 per quart, $3.50 per gallon can, $5.50 per two-gallon cans and $10 per five-gallon buckets. Free confidential document shredding will also be offered, the release stated. The Kane County Recycles website, www.countyofkane.org/Recycling, includes a list of locations that accept electronics. By BRETT ROWLAND browland@shawmedia.com SYCAMORE – A DeKalb man remained in jail June 7 facing first-degree murder charges in connection with the death of his 19-year-old girlfriend after a judge decided to keep his bond set at $2 million. Michael Kulpin, 20, of the 900 block of Kimberly Drive, faces charges of murder, aggravated domestic battery and concealment of a homicide. Police said Kulpin beat and repeatedly stabbed Moorea Desroches, 19, inside their apartment during an argument late June 3 into early June 4. He later wrapped her body in a covering and hid it in a closet. Police found the body June 5 after the victim’s mother asked them to check on her daughter, court records show. Desroches was from Campton Hills, near St. Charles, and she and Kulpin had a child together. On her Facebook page, she described herself as a graduate of St. Charles North High School, and engaged. Kulpin, wearing an orange jumpsuit, appeared in bond court June 7 via video camera from the DeKalb County Jail. His eyes darted back and forth at times, but he remained mostly expressionless as the judge read the charges against him. Judge Philip Montgomery said the $2 million bond was appropriate because Kulpin is unemployed, has few ties to the local community and failed to appear in two other court cases. The judge noted that – in a pre-trial service report – Kulpin scored a 9 out of 9, put-

During the bond hearing, Kulpin responded to the judge’s questions with short answers. He said his child was in the custody of grandparents and that he had lived on Kimberly Drive for three months. If Kulpin is released on bail, the judge said he would be required to submit to restrictive GPS monitoring. He also wouldn’t be able to have any contact with the victim’s parents, or his child. Montgomery added those requirements at the request of DeKalb County Assistant State’s Attorney Stephanie Klein, the prosecutor assigned to the case. It’s unlikely Kulpin will be able to post $200,000 bail. In court documents, Kulpin said he had no source of income, owed $1,500 on his car and an additional $1,300 to a tow yard. In response to a question about how much bond he would be able to post, he wrote “not a lot.” Asked who would post his bail, he wrote: “no idea.” Montgomery appointed DeKalb County Public Defender Tom McCulloch to represent Kulpin in the case. McCulloch briefly consulted with Kulpin over the phone during the June 7 bond hearing, explaining that there was no point in asking the judge to lower the bond amount at this time. He also said he would try to meet with Kulpin soon. “No one should prejudge this case,” McCulloch said after the hearing.

“There’s a presumption of innocence.” Kulpin’s most recent Facebook posts were cryptic. On May 31, he posted: “All people want/need in a relationship is true honesty but why does it always seem to be easier to lie then to be true and loyal as people of society we all know true right from wrong but we always turn to the bad instead of good because wrong always felt better i guess thats why we lie especially to the ones we claim to love the most.” On May 29, he posted “When you got no friends so you sit in your apartment all day on netflix and facebook. Smh.” A friend responded: “Better than jail anyday.” Kulpin replied “Yeah i guess.” If convicted of first-degree murder, Kulpin could be sentenced to 20 to 60 years in prison. If convicted of both murder and concealment of a homicide, Kulpin would be required to serve consecutive prison terms, the judge said. Preliminary autopsy results indicated Desroches died of multiple stab wounds to her body, DeKalb County Coroner Dennis Miller said. The body was released to Yurs Funeral Home in St. Charles. Moorea attended St. Charles North High School until 2014, St. Charles District 303 spokesman Jim Blaney confirmed. Her family couldn’t immediately be reached for comment. Kulpin had a series of arrests in Kane County. In one 2014 case, he allegedly used a forged credit card to buy gas and food at McDonald’s. His next court appearance is scheduled for June 24.

of Houston graduating in 1968 with a PhD in mechanical engineering. Bill moved his wife and their three young daughters to Cookeville, TN to teach at Tennessee Tech University and later to St. Charles where he worked at Harza Engineering Company in Chicago. He was a member of ASME and Tau Beta Phi. In 1977, Bill established Mitchell Engineering Company from which he reluctantly retired in 2012 at the age of 81. Bill and Helen spent many happy hours with friends over the years playing cards, square dancing and traveling to Myrtle Beach. He had a passion for flying and owned his own single-engine Mooney that he dubbed “Mosquito Airlines.” But his favorite times were those at home with his family. He loved nothing more than a dinner of his special spaghetti and meatballs with a good bottle of red wine followed by a Masterpiece murder mystery or a heated debate on Fox News. In addition to Helen, his beloved wife of more than sixty years, Bill is survived by his daughters Melissa of Dallas, TX, Margaret of Joplin, MO, and Kathryn of St. Charles, IL. Bill is also survived by his brother and wife, Robert and Marilyn Mitchell of South Chatham, MA; brother-in-law and wife, Robert and Margie Straight of Houston, TX; and numerous nephews and nieces. He was predeceased by his parents, brother, Walter Mitchell, Jr.; and sister, Leona Lucariello. The family would like to thank Dr. Wendy Stock at the University of Chicago, Dr. Robert Bayer at Delnor Hospital, and Dr. Robert Harris, Jr. at Texas Presbyterian Hospital, together will all the wonderful nurses at the Delnor Cancer Center for their tremendous care and support. A memorial service celebrating Bill’s life will be held at Geneva United Methodist Church on June 26, 2016, at 1:00 PM with a reception to follow. Jane M. Peterson age 94, of St. Charles died June 4, 2016. She was born October 14, 1921 on a farm west of St. Charles, Illinois. She was confirmed on June 4, 1935 at Salem Lutheran Church in Sycamore, Illinois. In 1931, her family moved to DeKalb and Jane attended country schools and gradu-

ated from DeKalb Township High School in 1939. For over 10 years, she was employed by DeKalb Agricultural Association in the Accounting Department and for over 37 years, she was employed by the State Bank of St. Charles and Harris Bank, retiring in 1989. Jane was a member of Bethlehem Lutheran Church, the 50 Plus Group, a life member of the St. Charles Heritage Center, a life member of the Batavia Museum, DeKalb AG Alumni, and the DeKalb Lunch Bunch. Jane is survived by a niece, Jean (Ben) Bogner of Wheaton, a nephew Paul (Peggy) Peterson of Urbana, four grand nieces; Anna (Pawel) Ignatowicz, Kari (Chris) Stoehr, Amy (Keith) Fahnestock, Lisa Peterson, and one great-grand-nephew Andrew Ignatowicz. Carroll begins, “Twas brillig and the slithy toves ... .” I suggest health care institution people utter “against our policy,” “I don’t know” (as the final word), “can’t find it” (this, just now, as I write from my new location in extended care), “let me teach you all about something you already know!” and – in the physician’s lingo – “don’t worry, someone will take care of it,” or, here’s a judgment about your intelligence, character and lifestyle based on knowing you for 10 minutes. Friends and neighbors who recognize health care Jabberwocky may or may not try my new, self-imposed privilege after living more than three quarters of a century. My language now includes tactics for deflecting jabber-speech and an effort not to simply absorb and enable. Hear me say, “That’s pretty stupid;” “Keep looking;” “Try another way;” “Stop talking about me as if I were an unconscious blob,” i.e., SHE needs such and such. Go for, “Joan, who is just a foot away and a so-called player in the game, needs ...;” and “Stop repeating. I get it, just don’t want to ... .” Warning, the Joan-speak does have consequences, so try at your own risk. Thanks to so many for good wishes and a wish for speedy recovery. It’s good to know you have my back.

The class valedictorian was Grace Wehner of Oswego, and the graduation speaker was Victoria Pyle

The 84 Rosary graduates included 26 Illinois State Scholars. four National Merit-commended students, 37 National Honor Society members, and 12 athletes who signed letters of intent to play in college. Graduates earned $14.4 million in college scholarships, according to a news release from the school, and spent

4,000 hours on community service during senior year. Eighteen members of the Class of 2016 were named St. Catherine of Siena Scholars, Rosary’s highest academic award. Catherine of Siena scholars must have a minimum cumulative grade-point average of 4.0 and a minimum of 15 honors courses, a strong attendance record, and a strong service record.

High praise for Waubonsee EMT program KANE COUNTY CHRONICLE neighbors@kcchronicle.com SUGAR GROVE – The Waubonsee Community College Emergency Medical Technician-Paramedic program has received national recognition from Advance CTE, a national nonprofit that represents state directors and leaders responsible for secondary, postsecondary and adult career technical education – or CTE – programs across the U.S. Waubonsee’s program was one of 11 programs selected for the Excellence in Action award, which recognizes innovative and impactful CTE programs across the nation, according to a news release.

Waubonsee’s honor was based on its “uniquely innovative and effective approach to offering rigorous coursework, authentic and meaningful work-based learning experiences, and supported transitions from secondary to postsecondary education and on to successful careers,” according to Advance CTE officials. Waubonsee received the award in the Health Science Career Cluster as a result of its commitment to providing a supported and seamless pathway between secondary and postsecondary education, work-based learning opportunities, and rigorous academic and technical coursework preparing students with the skills they need for success.

Here’s my perspective for this week: I took a fall in the middle of the night about a week ago. There’s a lot of folks to talk about who were super keen about helping me. First, kudos to Mister Z, who when he heard my holler from flat on my back in my room came to phase one of the rescue and declared in simple words, “Oh, s---,” and hastened to dial 911. Way to go, Boy Scout! As always, St. Charles firefighters arrived right away, displaying enough of those revolving lights and the roar of the firetruck engine to evoke interest from all our good neighbors. Their design to scoop up the considerable “Maxi-Me” was awesome and highly effective. Thanks, guys. I salute you. How timely that I had previously mentioned and praised the Delnor ER staff in the prior column. Good things must be said of the 3600 level people. I think they know that – as my room was situated right near the nursing station, I could hear any and all voices. Several staff members must be commended for catching on to my humor/ sarcasm and helping in a substantial way for me to cope with bureaucracy, uncertainty, and a bunch of dumb stuff. Not sure it would be a good thing to mention names so the good guys don’t stand out as “FOJs” (Friends of Joan). There’s a fresh chapter in “The Book” that has been inspired by Lewis Carroll as he constructed Alice’s wonderland those many years ago. To begin, the concept of hospital, as I would now put it, becomes Dollywood, a place of amusement. It makes for strong outlets for laughing at stuff, rather than bemoaning, struggling and playing at institutional culture. College English was my introduction to Carroll’s “Jabberwocky,” a nonsense poem, which – in my take all these years later – gave license to consider that words can sound familiar, particularly

Batavia marks late resident’s push to create Flag Day It’s coming, Batavia. The 100th anniversary of Flag Day. To many people, Flag Day, which is June 14, means you may be a little more patriotic on a Tuesday than normal. But for Batavia, there is a deeper connection. That’s because Dr. Bernard J. Cigrand, considered to be the father of Flag Day, lived in Batavia from about 1912 until his death in 1932. In 1916, President Woodrow Wilson issued a proclamation that June 14 would be a nation-wide observance of Flag Day, which was due in large part to nearly 30 years of effort by Cigrand. On Aug. 3, 1949, 17 years after Cigrand’s death, President Harry Truman signed an act of Congress designating June 14 as National Flag Day. Cigrand dreamed that Flag Day would help celebrate the birthday of the Stars and Stripes – officially adopted by the Continental Congress on June 14, 1777. When Cigrand was just 19, he worked as a school teacher in Wisconsin. He taught his students the importance of the Stars and Stripes and the flag’s history, and assigned an essay, “What the American Flag Means To Me.” While Flag Day may not mean you get a day off work, we hope you take a moment during the day to reflect on Cigrand’s question yourself. Organizers in Batavia have been planning a two-day celebration on both June 12 and 14 for the centennial edition of the national holiday, which also will feature the unveiling of a memorial for Cigrand on June 14. Here’s how to seize summer days This past school year was chaotic, to say the very least. With rigorous classes, two musicals and activities with church and family, it seems as if I barely got a chance to catch my breath. Now that summer’s here, I can finally sit back and relax, without a care in the world. However, I experienced something bizarre during my first few weeks off from school. Sitting up in my room in the early afternoon, with no homework to complete, no rehearsals, or meetings – dare I say it? – I felt a little bored. I’ve become so used to working at breakneck speed to keep up with schoolwork and activities that the abrupt halt left me unsure what to do with myself. I think this is the case for a lot of students, and uncertainty about how to spend all this free time can lead to wasting two and a half school-free months. Should some of you share my plight, I’ve compiled a list of

THE WRITE PLACE Emma Chrusciel suggestions for summer fun. To start off, you don’t need to go on some elaborate vacation to enjoy the warmer months. Some of my favorite summer activities are located right here in the Tri-Cities, particularly in downtown Geneva. Graham’s, All Chocolate Kitchen and Forever Yogurt are great spots to grab a delicious, ice-cold dessert on a warm evening. There are dozens of shops lining Third and State streets that are perfect for a summer shopping spree. Best of all, from June 21 to 26, the annual Swedish Days festival will have food, live performances, carnival rides and more for the entire family to enjoy. If sitting in your air-conditioned home with a good book is preferable

to walking around downtown, then the Geneva Public Library’s summer reading program has you covered. I always look forward to the book recommendations, the incentives for reading and the Teen Summer Reading party. There are programs for all ages, and – even if you’re not a reader – why not swing by the library to check out its assortment of movies, CDs and magazines? There is truly something for everyone! That’s not to say that time spent relaxing at home can’t be just as fulfilling and enjoyable as summer excursions. With more time on your hands, take the chance to do all those things you never had the opportunity to during the school year. Whether it’s redecorating your room, hanging out with friends, learning a new skill or even taking a well-deserved nap, there’s no better time to do it than now.

together. We were united in our desire to make him comfortable and happy. We took time for long conversations with him, brought him new clothes, mailed cards so he would receive mail, brought his Wall Street Journal so he had something to read and, overall, just made sure he knew that we cared. If a stranger passed by my uncle’s room here in the Fox Valley over his three-year stay, there is a chance that they saw an old man with no reason to live. Tonight, the night of his funeral, one would realize that to three women, he was the greatest. Tears are flowing as we realize how much we will miss him. His rough exterior was not who he was. We knew that under his rude remarks, he was a gentle giant. The nursing home staff warmed up to him so dearly that they cried with news of his death. It is important as a community that we care for our elderly. Please take a moment to bring magazines or a newspaper to a person in a nursing home. If you find a special someone, you will be surprised how happy you will feel helping this lonely person.

Finding reasonable solutions To the Editor:

As of this writing, the state is beginning another month without a complete budget for the 2016 fiscal year. Though House Democrats continue fighting to fund critical state services, including breast cancer screenings, in-home care for the elderly, meals for homebound seniors and higher education, as well as funding for victims of child abuse and sexual assault, legislative Republicans and Gov. Rauner block our efforts. While House Democrats’ priority has been to pass a comprehensive, full-fiscal year budget using a balanced approach that includes spending cuts but does not decimate needed services, Gov. Rauner’s priority puts his personal agenda first and attacks the wages and standard of living of the middle class. His insistence on passing his personal agenda has been the single roadblock to finding a true bipartisan budget solution. However, since March 26, 2015, Gov. Rauner has approved six budget proposals that did not include any part of his personal agenda. This reaffirms my previous statements that when the governor sets aside his personal agenda that hurts middle-class families, we can make progress on the state’s most important issue. The people of Illinois want to see progress. They want to see a comprehensive full-year budget. I, too, am committed to passing comprehensive budgets for fiscal 2016 and 2017. I also hope the governor will look at his recent budgetary actions and see that we can come together to find reasonable solutions when he sets aside his personal agenda that will hurt middle-class families and has nothing to do with the state budget.
