Congratulations to Peter and Jamie Shaw. Lochlan Douglas Shaw (Loch = Lock) was born February 12, 2015 at KSB Hospital in Dixon, IL. He was 20" long and weighed 8 lbs, 4 oz. Mary & Jim Perkins Family Update - Summer 2015 RIGHT: Kathryn has finished her second year of teaching in South Korea and came home in midAugust. Her future plans include study for the GRE exam and applying to graduate school. We expect that we’ll get to have her home with us for the next year.

BELOW: Liz is a Junior at Pacific Lutheran Univ (PLU) in Tacoma, WA this fall. She’s studying Public Relations and Advertising. She’s thrilled to be living off campus this year, sharing a house with three friends. In January, she is headed for study abroad in London. And yes, she is thrilled about this too!

Jim retired in September 2014. Since then he has done lots of work around the house (repairs, painting, yard work and more), traveling, motor biking, playing bridge and reading.

He’s hiked 350 miles along the Pacific Crest Trail, and though he had to stop far short of the Canadian boarder, he accomplished quite a feat.

RIGHT: On the sad note, Mary’s cousin Michael Biggs passed away on June 8th. This was very unexpected and a sad moment in our lives. Yet - we were grateful and fortunate to be able to join the Biggs family and Lorings - Janet, Jeanne, Keith, Bill and Adele in Tulsa to be with Mike’s wife, Sherry. The time together was precious.

Within a week of Michael’s passing, we got news that Nancy Shaw had also passed away. Mary traveled to Newton, Iowa for Aunt Nancy’s memorial service.

It turned out to be a short but good time for reconnecting with Bill and Bob Shaw and their families.

Mary continues to work for Legacy Health. She is planning to retire after helping the Lab to move into a new 65,000 sq. ft. building this fall (a very exciting project that’s been in the works for the past 5 years). She will continue to work on a limited basis after this, but only part time or on-call.

She is especially eager to spend more time with Jim and hopes to travel, quilt and spend time with friends and family. Mary recently returned from Korea - where she had seized the opportunity to travel with Kathryn.

During the past year we’ve had some special times with family. Jeanne & John Mick visited us twice this summer. In June, they came and ran a marathon in Eugene and then, in July, they came with Paul & Ben. We had a super time together, especially getting to spend several days in Oceanside, Oregon. The Oregon coast is an amazing place for family time, relaxing and being refreshed!

The highlight of our year was a road trip west to Oregon and California. We saw Mt. Saint Helens, stayed in Portland Oregon with the Perkins, and then traveled out to the Oregon coast. Oceanside Oregon (with Jim and Mary Perkins) was the perfect little beach town to relax and watch the boys play in the sand. Next, we traveled down the coast, camping along the way and visiting the Redwood forests of Northern California.

Lastly, we stopped at Crater Lake National Park in Oregon and then headed back home!

Linda & Chris Hanson Family Update

What was funny (and scary) was when it brought them back, it was pitch dark and there was no place for the limo to turn around. As it was, he had to back out all the way to a street in the beginning, but at least it was light so he could see! Hope the limo is not still there!

Now - on to Utah!!! Above is a picture of Linda and her team after winning State! They played several matches over three days at the Colorado Athletic Club Monaco. It was a three-day marathon!

After the lifts close, their club is at the top of the mountain and they wait for about 26 snow cats to come out of the Gamecreek Bowl, over to Avanti and then down Bear Tree to the Vail Mountain Club for a luau (hence the leis). It was right after the time change, so they had an extra hour of daylight and could take several runs on that wonderful courduroy! Brad & Anneliese Shaw Update Anneliese & Brad have had a busy 2015 making landscaping and home improvements in Colorado Springs.

Anneliese has participated in several halfmarathons over the past few years, including ones at Grand and Bryce Canyons to which her parents (retired from the Park Service) accompanied her. This year, she caught Brad in a weak moment and persuaded him to join her on June 29th to walk the “Slacker HalfMarathon”.

The “Slacker” is mostly downhill from Arapaho Basin Ski Area on Brad & Anneliese at Arapaho Basin - the Start of the Slacker!

I-70 at 10,630’ at the Continental Divide to Georgetown at 8400’. It started with a 4am drive for 2 hours, and then Brad quickly realized that it would be his first and last organized outdoor event (2,200 people in the same place at the same time is not his idea of a good time). Should he ever feel the need, it will be an unpublished 13 mile hike in remote backcountry for 2-9 participants…

Pips - 4 yrs. - Whippet

Pips and Buka are devoted guardians of their West Side home in the Springs, and they quickly alert the whole neighborhood to any potential trespassers (and delivery people, etc.).

Pips is also a most fearsome squirrel sentinel of the back yard and Buka is more accurate than the atomic clock in Boulder when it’s mealtime. Both “girls” also lose their minds with excitement when they sense it’s time for a walk or tag along in the car for an errand. These photos are from Anneliese’s 2015 Independence Day photo session.

Justin & Kimberly Shaw Family Update Brad & Anneliese Shaw, Natalie, Jeff, Kate & Lucy Dalton, and Justin, Kimberly, Susanne & Jack Shaw all descended on Coronado, CA in July, 2015, to reunite with Pierce Shaw for a family get together that had been planned before Ben passed. If only he could have been there!

Jeff Dalton and Justin Shaw even tried something called flyboarding - basically you strap a fire-hose to your feet and get pushed up into the air. The blue hose is attached to the jet ski which controls the water thrust or pressure. So it’s really A great time was had by all with surfing lessons, beach a team effort of the jet ski operator and the flyboarder. The time, San Diego Padres game for Jack and Justin, visits to goal is stay out of the water as long and as high as possible.

(June 2015) Jack’s favorite sport is baseball.

He played in tournaments this summer and loves the sport. Jack and Justin flew up to Williamsport, PA with a few of Jack’s friends recently to watch a full day of Little League World Series games. The Mexico vs. Canada game was a battle until the end!

Susanne Shaw’s travel soccer team made it to the PA Indoor State Cup finals (Jan 2015). She continues to play competitive soccer and loves it! She’s a tiger on the field!

Tom & Tammy Shaw Family Update • Tom had his right knee replaced last October and his left knee replaced this September. Tom’s prostrate cancer numbers continue to improve nearly two years following his treatment.

• Tammy’s passions continue to be grandkids, kayaking, running, and baking “healthy” food for friends and family.

• Kylie received her driver’s learner permit in December and will soon be a fully licensed driver on her birthday this December. She appears to be a very good driver.

• Kylie has been busy with school team & club swimming all year (4 conference championships), played high school basketball, and toots a mean horn (trumpet) in her school band(s). She was recognized at her end of the year awards assembly as the Freshman Marching Band Member of the Year.

• Tom, Tammy, and Kylie vacationed in Disney World with Tom, Sam, and Sophie in April. Sophie had a private audience with Tinker Bell...sweet!

• Kylie began her Sophomore year at Dixon High School in midAugust.

• Tom & Tammy kayaked on six different lakes in Central Wisconsin in July.

• Ben and Joon traveled from Germany to spend 5-6 days with parents and siblings in mid-August..wonderful to be with them.

Ben & Joon Shaw Update The decision to move into a different arena of the industry was a difficult and complex one to make. Shaw Media is not only our family’s company, but it is also an exciting, innovative mix of people serving the local communities of Northern Illinois and Iowa.

Over the past ten years, I have been afforded several excellent opportunities to provide value, and some innovation, along with our team at Shaw during a period of dramatic change in our industry. However, when I became aware of the opportunity to join WAN-IFRA as a Senior Digital Consultant, it seemed like an intriguing idea. I could share some of the experience that I had built over the past decade with media houses around the world, while also having the opportunity to learn about the global industry and be as close to international innovation as possible.

So Joon and I decided to roll the dice, moved to Germany, began work where I was quickly promoted to overseeing the entire division as Director of Global Advisory. In the meantime, Joon has become a member of the board of a local English Speaking Theater group called FEST and has been busy learning the language.

Today WAN-IFRA’s Advisory Services provides pragmatic and independent guidance on digital transformation from a network of industry leaders based around the world. Our panel of experts has veterans from Shibsted, Axel Springer, Twitter, AP, BBC just to name a few.

WAN-IFRA is in many ways a unique organization. We are the global organization of the world’s press, representing more than 18,000 publications, 15,000 online sites and over 3,000 companies in more than 120 countries. With our offices in Frankfurt, Germany, and in Paris, France, and subsidiaries in Singapore, India and Mexico, we act as a world-wide platform for the exchange of ideas, information and experiences among its members and other participants in the news publishing industry. My travels have taken me from Lima to Kuala Lumpur, from Stockholm and Dubai and to Barcelona and Sao Paolo and so many more places.

Even though I have missed serving the local communities of the Midwest this year and serving the industry on the Board of Directors of the Local Media Association, as well as acting as PAGE Cooperative’s Chair of IT/ Online Committee, I feel that I’m able to bring global industry a little closer together by sharing information about new developments as they occur around the world.

For example, Broadcast TV is being disrupted by traditional media companies with Video On Demand in Sweden, Paid Content doesn’t necessarily mean the metered model in Europe (and it’s working) and iBeacons, Wearbles and Chat Apps are ushering in new ways to be even more relevant to our readers and our advertisers just to name a few.

It’s a fascinating time to be in our industry and it has been an enriching experience to move from operating from inside our family business to an advisor working for a non-profit, global association.

The joyous addition of Lochlan to our family has kept us very busy and mainly local. Even so, we have had many adventures this past summer. Daddy and Finn have become Dixon park regulars, riding their bike all over town. Every chance we have gotten, we have spent in the water: Rock River, Lake Carroll and Lake Carroll's pool (Finn is an official River Rat). If the weather keeps us in, it is Crazy Go Nuts University time (that would be the basement). We are loving life with these two Shaw boys, and look forward to seeing you all again next year!

Benjamin Denny Shaw Entrepreneurial Scholarship To honor the memory of Ben, the Board of Directors of Shaw Family Holdings, Instituted “The Benjamin Denny Shaw Entrepreneurial Scholarship” for college-bound seniors from Dixon High School who are pursuing studies in Business & Entrepreneurialism.

In May, Brad Shaw and Natalie Dalton traveled to Dixon to personally award the first two scholarships to two Dixon High School seniors.

In honor of the memory of Benjamin Denny Shaw, scholarships were awarded to two college bound Dixon High School seniors who are pursuing studies in Business & Entrepreneurialism.

The first winners of the scholarships were Brittani Sohn and Christian Hicks.

Suburban GM We are pleased to announce that, in addition to his role as Vice President of Shaw Media, J. Tom Shaw has been named the General Manager of our suburban group. The change was effective Monday, October 19.

In his new role, Tom leads our operations based in Crystal Lake, Grayslake, Downers Grove, DeKalb, St. Charles, Joliet, Morris and Yorkville. Reporting to Tom are suburban publishers Karen Pletsch, Kate Weber and Bob Wall, along with Digital Sales Director, Rita Walker, and Senior Circulation Director, Bob Edwards.

In his new role, Tom will look to optimize the strategic position of Shaw Media in the Chicago region.

It is imperative that our resources are aligned with our best opportunities. Throughout his career, Tom has demonstrated the ability to find new ways to generate sustainable revenue, recruit and retain talent, and increase market share.
