Fifty Years Ago: Did Clay Shaw ‘willfully and unlawfully’ conspire to kill JFK?

By Larry Hurto Most every U.S. citizen of the Baby Boom generation or older remembers where he or she was on Nov. 22, 1963, when it was announced that President John F. Kennedy had been assassinated in Dallas, Texas. But how many will recall 50 years ago the only trial of a person to be charged with participating in a conspiracy to murder the President?

The Warren Commission, established to report on how and why the 35th President was killed, found that a lone gunman, Lee Harvey Oswald, an ex-Marine who had lived in the Soviet Union, was the perpetrator of the deed. Almost at once, writers like Mark Lane, William W. Turner and Harold Weisberg disputed this finding, insisting that a single individual acting alone could not possibly have pulled off the crime of the century.

The world was shocked when the New

Orleans States-Item revealed on Feb. 17, 1967, an investigation was underway probing the possibility that a plot existed in the Crescent City which culminated in the death of President Kennedy. One week later, New Orleans District Attorney Jim Garrison, a native of Denison, Iowa, announced the investigation his office had been conducting had “positively solved the assassination of President John F. Kennedy.”

“I have no reason to believe Lee Harvey Oswald killed anybody in Dallas on Nov. 22, 1963,” Garrison told reporters. According to the 6-foot-6-inch DA, the plot to kill the President was “a homosexual thrill-killing.” He promised there would be arrests.

“Apparently, we waited too long,” Garrison said when, shortly after noon on Feb. 22, 1967, it was announced his prime suspect, David William Ferrie, 48, an eccentric selfstyled psychologist, private investigator, and freelance pilot, was found dead in bed. The

conspiracy’s “getaway pilot” had killed himself Garrison was certain. The county coroner disagreed.

Then, on March 1, Clay L. Shaw, 53, retired managing director of the International Trade Mart, was arrested and indicted for criminal conspiracy in the death of the president.

“I am shocked and dismayed at the charges which have been filed against me,” Shaw told the press.

Garrison claimed he had witnesses to prove the existence of a conspiracy. At a preliminary hearing for Shaw, Perry Raymond Russo, a 25-year-old insurance salesman from Baton Rouge, testified that he heard Shaw, Oswald (who was then staying in New Orleans) and Ferrie plot the assassination at a party at Ferrie’s apartment in September of 1963.

By Jenny Thompson, RD, LD, CDE The seafood counter can be overwhelming. How do you know if the salmon your eying was sustainably sourced? Is it better to buy wild caught or farm raised? And which is better for you ... and for the ocean?

Understanding a few common terms and labels can help you get answers or, at least, know what to ask your fishmonger. Here’s what to look for.

Wild Caught

Wild-caught salmon are as the term implies — caught from their wild habitat, and usually by smaller fishing operations. It also means the fish are raised on a natural diet, which contributes to their notably complex flavor and characteristic red-orange color. Wild-caught salmon are often leaner and lower in calories than farm-raised salmon, but they also come at a higher price.

Farm-Raised

If your salmon says farm-raised, it means just that. It was raised in an aquatic farm, also called an aquaculture. Farms may vary in size and practices, such as what they feed the salmon. The difference in diet may explain several nutritional differences. Some farm-raised salmon may be higher in omega-3s and vitamin C; while wild-caught may be higher in calcium, potassium, iron and zinc. Both farm-raised and wild caught salmon may carry a risk for exposure to environmental toxins, but studies show the benefits of salmon outweigh the risk.

Fair Trade Certified

If your salmon is Fair Trade Certified — the green and black logo — that means the fishermen and workers received fair compensation and wages for their work. It also means practices were put into place for safer working conditions, environmental protection and community development for healthcare, education and clean water.

Responsible Choice

Seafood with the Responsible Choice logo has been rated as either a “Best Choice” or “Good Alternative” by the Monterey Bay Aquarium Seafood Watch program or are certified to an environmental standard benchmarked to these ratings. In other words, a Responsible Choice designation means salmon and other types of seafood are not being over-fished or sourced in a way that’s harmful to the environment. If you’re ever in doubt, you can always visit SeafoodWatch.org and check out the Consumer Guide for your region.

2 Tbsp. garlic, chopped Salmon 1 Tbsp. Hy-Vee Select olive oil 1 Tbsp. Hy-Vee ground cumin 1 Tbsp. coriander seed, crushed Hy-Vee salt, to taste Hy-Vee ground black pepper, to taste 1 pound salmon fillet All you do: 1. Heat 1 tablespoon olive oil in a heavy skillet on medium heat.

2. Mix together cumin and coriander seed in a small bowl; season salmon with spices and salt and pepper, saving some spice mix for the stew.

3. Add salmon to skillet and cook on each side for 3 to 4 minutes until it easily flakes with a fork (145 degrees).

4. Meanwhile, for the Black Bean Stew, heat olive oil in a

1 poblano pepper, chopped Hy-Vee red pepper flakes, to taste 1 (14.5-oz) can chopped tomatoes 1 (15.5-oz) can Hy-Vee no-salt-added black beans, drained and rinsed 1 ½ cup water 1 Tbsp. fresh cilantro, chopped Green onions, chopped 1 fresh lime, juiced medium saucepan and add onion and garlic; cook for 3 minutes over medium heat.

5. Add peppers, chili flakes, and reserved spiced mix. Cook 3 minutes. Add tomatoes and sear. Add black beans and water, stirring to combine.

Simmer for 10 minutes. Add cilantro, green onions, lime juice, salt and pepper. Cook for 2 minutes.

6. Ladle stew into individual bowls and top with salmon portion.

Salmon Health Facts

Eating seafood two to three times per week reduces the risk of death from any health-related cause by 17 percent.

Salmon and other fatty fish are rich in essential omega-3s, which have been shown to improve heart health, memory, diabetes, and depression.

A four-ounce serving of salmon contains about 1,200 mg of omega-3s. It’s recommended to eat two servings of seafood per week.

Salmon contains 100 percent of your daily vitamin D, the bone-strengthening vitamin that many people struggle to get enough of, especially in the winter months.

Seafood includes other vital nutrients such as selenium, iron, vitamins B-6 and B-12, and protein.

‘Retirement is not a Biblical word’ Q&A with Park Centre resident Roger Swanson

By Mike Mendenhall Editor’s note: The following is a Q&A with Park Centre resident Roger Swanson. For 30-plus years, Swanson was a minister and, eventually, become head of evangelism for the denomination of the United Methodist Church. He has a doctoral degree from the seminary at the Drew Theological School. The 84-year-old lives, and still preaches upon request, in Newton.

Q) Tell readers about your background. Where you’re from and how did you came to Newton?

A) I was born and raise in eastern Massachusetts in a city called Brockton.

An interesting connection between Brockton and Newton — It was the home of Rocky Marciano, who at one time was heavyweight champion of the world. He died in Newton. He had an air crash here in Newton. Strange.

Brockton was a working man’s city. That’s where I was raised. I was the fifth child. I went one year to the University of Massachusetts. I was not happy there at all. I came home thinking I was not going to go to college. Then, by the intervention of my pastor who felt that I really had some gifts that needed to be encouraged, he called around and we found Morningside College in Sioux City, Iowa. It had a special program for students who were committed to the ministry.

I came out to Iowa. It was my first time outside of New England. It was a radical change for a New England boy raised with hills and trees and all that sort of thing to see Iowa for the first time. I spent three years there and met the girl to be my wife (Beverly).

For two years, I was pastor of a small Methodist church outside Denison, Iowa. I don’t know if that opportunity comes anymore, but in those days a lot of these small churches around colleges used students (to preach). So every weekend, Friday through Sunday, I’d drive down to a little town called Deloit. I was there to be pastor and that really prepared me.

We went east when I graduated and entered Drew Theological Seminary of the Methodist Church. We lived in parsonage in Newfoundland, N.J. We fell in love with New Jersey. I think it’s a very unknown state.

Often, many people know New Jersey from the corridor and on the shore,

but it’s really quite a pastoral state. We fell in love with it. We graduated from seminary and stayed there for 35 years, pastoring at a number of different kinds of congregations.

We traveled a lot. My wife and I led six different trips to the Holy Land and did a lot of guest preaching across the county. Then, in 1991, I got called to serve my whole denomination as director of evangelism for the (United Methodist Church) denomination for the next eight years and traveled overseas.

We left there in 1999 and moved to Florida where I became director of evangelism for the state of Florida for the Methodist Church. I did that for three years, then my Bishop died. I was 68 at the time, so we decided it was time to retire.

Pretty soon, my wife’s health had deteriorated and we starting thinking where we were going to stay and live. We had two children, a son in New Jersey and a daughter out here. Her name is Rachel Faidley. They live on a farm over by Colfax. My daughter met Terry (Faidley) out east in church.

Then I had a heart incident and had to have bypass surgery. Both of the kids flew in to be with their mom and I during that time. They talked to us and said they’d feel more comfortable if we lived by one of them. We looked in New Jersey and here.

Q) How did you find yourself at Park Centre?

We knew Park Centre from my son-in-law’s mother who lived here at

wouldn’t have that facility living in an apartment somewhere.

The staff here is phenomenal.

Margot (Voshell) is wonderful. I tell her, to her embarrassment, she’s the soul of this place.

Q) Since you’ve been here, you’ve performed pastoral duties. Tell us about how you’ve step up in when needed spiritually.

A) Let me tell you my basic philosophy: Ministry is not what I did for a living. Ministry is who I am.

It’s not a vocation, it’s a calling I’ve had. It’s been my identity. I often say, retirement is not a biblical word. In a sense, I’m not retired from ministry.

I no longer have a bishop who will send me here and there, but I’m still in the ministry. I’m still an elder in the church. When there are opportunities for ministry, you take them.

I was only here a few months when I got a call one day from a women on the other end of the line who asked if I was available to fill in preaching at Wittemberg Church.

The pastor was in the hospital in the time. It ended up being two years of

pastoring, and we ended up closing that church.

During Wesley Week, I was asked to do a dedication of the staff through a blessing of the hands. I teach a Sunday school class at (Newton) First Methodist (Church). They have a satellite service here occasionally, so I fill in here occasionally for Pastor Gary Marzolf.

Q) Do you find stepping into the pastoral role fulfilling?

A) Yes. As I said before, ministry is not what I do for a living. Obviously, I was salaried all my ministry, but I wasn’t salaried not to preach, I was salaried to be free to preach. When ministry opportunities come, I can’t not take them. I’ll be 85 in a couple of months. There are things I can’t do anymore. I have very limited energy.

Q) Do you find when you’re pastoring, does that temporarily bring that energy level back to you?

A) When I’m preaching, they tell me I’m the same person preaching.

What they don’t see is when I come out of the pulpit and collapse. But it does.

the time. We ended up here. I’m a United Methodist Pastor. This is my home, and this is a United Methodist-sponsored facility, so it just seemed natural for us.

Q) How long have you been a resident of Park Centre?

A) It will be seven years in January.

Q) What is the most enjoyable part about living in a community like Park Centre?

First of all, there are companions.

There are people here. I would have been able to rent an apartment in town, but neighbors are far away.

Here, there are people around you you can see all the time. I know everybody who lives here (independent living) just about. There’s also safety and security. I had an incident about three weeks ago. It turned out to be food poisoning. No one else got it. It was something I ate. It was 11:30 p.m. and all I had to do was press a button and a nurse came down. She talked me through it and what my best options were. I called the ambulance and spent the night next door (Skiff Medical Center). I

History continued from page 5 A 29-year-old petty thief and drug addict named Vernon William Bundy also said he knew something about the conspiracy. He asserted while he was preparing to give himself a heroin “fix” on the New Orleans lakefront in June 1963, he saw Shaw link up with Oswald.

On March 27, 1967, a warrant was issued for the arrest of Russo’s ex-girlfriend, Sandra Moffett, whom he said had been at the party with him, but Sandra, by then Mrs. Har-

old McMaines, had moved to Iowa which had no extradition agreement with Louisiana. Her attorney was Lex Hawkins of Des Moines.

Then Garrison went on national television to announce that Kennedy’s death was a “coup d’etat” orchestrated by factions inside the Central Intelligence Agency, particularly in its Plans Division.

Shaw’s trial was delayed for various reasons until Jan. 21, 1969.

After hearing the testimony of a multitude of witnesses, including Russo, Bundy, and a surprise witness who said he was hypnotized for 16 years by 50 or 60 people, it took

the jury a little less than an hour to return a verdict of not guilty. It was March 1, two years to the day since Shaw was arrested.

Garrison subsequently charged Shaw with perjury for denying he knew Oswald or Ferrie.

Evidence developed by the House Select Committee on Assassinations (1976-78) and the PBS documentary series “Frontline” (1993-2013) has since confirmed that Ferrie and Oswald had some kind of association dating back to the time Ferrie was a Civil Air Patrol instructor in the 1950s.

In 1979, former CIA director

Richard Helms confirmed Shaw had been a part-time contact of the Domestic Contact Service of the CIA. From 1958 to 1962, Shaw was a member of the board of directors of the Centro Mondiale Commerciale (CMC), which reportedly was a “creature of the CIA ... set up as a cover for the transfer to Italy of CIA-FBI funds for illegal political-espionage activities.”

Research published in the 2003 anthology, “The Assassinations,” edited by James DiEugenio and Lisa Pease, has established both Shaw’s association with Oswald and his CIA connections.

When is clumsiness a cause for concern?

Who hasn’t tripped over his own feet or knocked over a water glass on a table? No one is immune to the occasional clumsiness, but some people may grow concerned that their bouts of clumsiness are becoming more frequent.

For healthy people, bumping into a wall when misjudging a corner or dropping silverware on the floor is often a minor, isolated incident. Lack of concentration or multitasking often may be to blame. In 2007, Professor Charles Swanik and a research team at the University of Delaware studied athletes to discover why some seem to be more injury prone than others.

Researchers found that clumsy athletes’ brains seemed to have “slowed processing speed,” which referred to how their brains understand new information and respond to it.

But clumsiness also can be a sign of a bigger issue at play, namely motor problems within the brain. According to Taylor Harrison, MD, clinical instructor in the neuromuscular division of Emory University, coordination of the body is complicated and tied to both motor and senory systems. That means the eyes, brain, nerves, cerebellum, which specializes in coordination and balance, muscles, and bones must work together.

Clumsiness can result from stroke, seizure disorders, brain trauma or the presence of tumors, and other conditions. Healthline also says that clumsiness may be an early symptom of Parkinson’s disease or Alzheimer’s. Parkinson’s affects the central nervous system and can impair motor skills. Alzheimer’s slowly damages and kills brain cells and may cause issues with coordination. This may be the case with other dementias as well.

Clumsiness may sometimes result from a lack of sleep or overconsumption of alcohol. Arthritis also can lead to clumsiness when joint pain and restrictive movements make it challenging to get around.

Psychologists may suggest cognitive behavioral therapy or propose performing tasks with more mindfulness to reduce clumsiness. If that doesn’t work, men and women should visit their physicians, who can conduct tests to rule out certain things and provide peace of mind.
