When younger generations speak to older adults, they may become stronger at verbal discourse and have greater perspective of different points of conversation.

Learning new technology Younger generations can impart knowledge of technological devices to older adults. People with skills are usually happy to share their knowledge. Even if seniors aren’t ready to purchase tablets or smartphones, they may be excited to have their grandchildren teach them about the latest gadgets.

Providing sense of purpose In the not-so-distant past, extended families frequently lived in close proximity to one another.

Such families shared meals and experiences and essentially grew up together. Nowadays, families separate for various reasons, such as job opportunities and cost of living concerns.

While there are advantages to spreading out, there are also some disadvantages, namely that grandparents and grandchildren may not see one another frequently enough. Even though people of different age groups may not entirely have the same interests, the interactions between generations can benefit both young people and their aging relatives.

Senior living and active lifestyle communities provide invaluable care and amenities for seniors. While being around like-minded individuals can be handy, it’s also limiting. Seniors who continue to age in place in mixed-age communities can extract joy from watching youthful children and young adults growing up, playing and socializing. Being around multiple generations also can spark interesting conversation, and all parties involved can learn something from one another.

Younger generations may not understand the concept of “hard times” or “doing without” like a person who has lived through various ups and downs. Passing along advice about economic cycles, saving for the future and maintaining stability is one area of expertise at which many seniors excel.

Both seniors and younger generations can realize a greater sense of purpose when interacting with one another. That person may be the reason the other one greets the day with a smile. Visits from grandchildren can reduce the liklihood of isolation and depression in older adults. And younger generations can discover the benefits of personal social interaction rather than communicating exclusively through social media apps.

Travel benefits for those ages 50 and up One of the best things about aging is being able to enjoy the fruits of your labor without as many obligations as you might have had when you were a younger adult. For example, many men and women have a lot more freedom to travel once they turn 50.

Many of today’s older adults have a wealth of discretionary time, and those who focused on retirement planning from an early age have the money to fund a recreational lifestyle.

Travel companies and other businesses understand that Baby Boomers and other seniors are valuable customers and are rolling out the red carpet with a bevy of discounts and perks.

AARP Services, Inc. has long been a trusted resource in senior-based information and resources. The organization continues to broker relationships with various companies to arrange deals on travel-related services and products for older men and women. Members of AARP can link directly to deals through the organization’s website.

In addition to companies that work with AARP, many other travel companies have discounts or other perks available to men and women over 50. All consumers need to do is inquire about such benefits. When in doubt, log on to the company’s website or give their customer service department a call.

Here are some other ways to secure deals on travel and other services.

• Do some networking. Fellow seniors who log in to chat rooms or who are members of social clubs may have the inside scoop on age-based travel deals. Learn the ropes from others who have been there before you and take notes on which companies offer the best deals.

• Read the fine print. Understand the details of senior discounts and compare them to other promotions offered to anyone, regardless of age. You may be able to get a better deal or combine offers if you’re not locked into a senior plan. Also, check the dates when

deals are valid to ensure you can travel when you want to.

• Always carry proof of age. Whether it is a driver’s license, AARP card, passport, or birth certificate, carry proof of your age at all times.

You do not want to miss out on a discount because you cannot verify you are 50 or older.

Though being mistaken as younger could be a boost to your ego, it will not benefit your bottom line.

• Explore airline perks. Men and women 55 and older may be eligible for “golden-agers” discounts at major airlines. Such deals are not typically advertised, so you may need to speak with an airline representative to secure the discount. Seniors also can request special services, such as baggage assistance, priority seating and a ride to the gate, at the airport.

• Try negotiating with vendors. If you can-

not find a senior discount, consider negotiating with vendors for deals. Local hotels or businesses may prove more flexible than national chains. It never hurts to ask for a senior discount.

• Embrace flexibility in scheduling. Unlike students or business travelers, seniors tend to have freedom with regard to the days of the week when they can travel. You have the flexibility to go and come as you please without having to coordinate with vacation time or school breaks. Use this to your advantage and travel during off-peak times when crowds will be small and rates may be lower.

Don’t feel down if you’re approaching another milestone birthday. Entering into your golden years gives you access to a variety of perks and discounts that can save you time and money on travel.

G

eorge Moon sees things a little differently than most folks. The 98-year-old retiree living in Newton Village would never just glance over the details of a car, machine or building. He would inspect every nook and cranny so when he eventually put

pencil to paper, his drawing would be as exact as it could be remembered in his mind.

Almost almost 37 years ago, Moon used this approach after looking at a postcard depicting the old Lister Opera House in Newton, which no longer exists.

Using the photographed image

as a guide, Moon created an oil painting of the building itself in 1982. He had made prints but kept the original for several years.

Now, the painting hangs on a wall of Newton Village for all to admire. Moon had signed and donated the piece to staff after he and his wife, Ellen, moved

into assisted living. Moon spoke with Senior Lifestyles to share his experiences as an artist: Do you know how long you’ve enjoyed drawing or painting?

Moon: Well, I’ve always been interested in drawing. When I was 14 years old my dad used to take me around to see the new cars.

I remember when he took me to go see the new ’34 Ford. I would study it real closely and then I’d go home and I could draw it. I’d come home and draw the car. I can remember all the details. continued on page 7 July 2019 • Senior Lifestyles

Were you mostly just drawing cars at that time?

Moon: I was mainly interested in cars.

Then I came to Maytag and I got into manufacturing engineering. I did a lot of blueprint drawing and stuff like that … We mostly just worked on blueprints all the time. Sometimes we would make a drawing (from our) perspective if they were having trouble with a machine or something.

Do you consider yourself very detailed as an artist?

Moon: Yeah, you had to have a lot of details in the cars or people wouldn’t recognize what models they were. You had to have a lot of detail in the cars.

What other cars do you remember drawing?

Moon: I did all the cars. Every year I did

cars when I was kid. Yeah. As soon as the new cars would come out I would draw them.

And I styled my own … I have some paintings of airplanes and dirigibles. I used to do stuff like that.

Oh really?

Moon: I don’t know if you’ve ever heard of it or not, but the Navy had a dirigible that carried five fighter planes. They would fly in and hook up as the dirigible was flying along.

It was kind of the forerunner of the aircraft carriers on the sea, really. I have paintings of dirigibles and airplanes being hooked up and so forth. I enjoyed that.

What made you want to draw the Lister Opera House?

Moon: Oh I just thought it was a beautiful building! The red brick and the white trim and everything around the windows. I just thought it looked like it was something that ought to be preserved. It took probably, oh, two or three months.

Have you ever spent that much time on a painting or drawing before?

Moon: Oh yeah. I drew the Newton Depot, too. And I have painted the office building of Maytag but I don’t have any with me here at the Newton Village … I really started painting later on. I hadn’t been painting too long.

This (Lister Opera House artwork) is my first oil painting.

What else did you get to paint?

Moon: I had a model railroad outfit in my basement and I did a lot of scenery there. I was painting all the time … I did acrylics, too.

Did you know much about the building before painting it?

Moon: Well, no. But I’m kind of interested in history, too. When I painted the (Lister Opera House) building I looked up this information here and knew that everybody would wonder where it was. Now everybody says, “Where was that building?” Of course, it’s from people who haven’t been in Newton very long. I tell ‘em it was across from the old Churchill Hotel. That’s torn down, too.

Did you gift that painting to Newton Village?

Moon: Yes I did! We’re going to sell our house. We moved in here but we haven’t sold it yet. We’ve got a lot of junk in the basement and everything. I went down to it the other day and I found this. I thought I’d just give it to these people. I thought it should be here in Newton Village where all the old people are, you know? Otherwise I’d have to throw it away! I didn’t want to throw it away.

What did you enjoy most about this hobby of yours?

Moon: I just liked to reproduce something from the past. I just enjoy doing it. Otherwise I wouldn’t be doing it.

Is it fulfilling to finish a painting or drawing that looks very much like the subject it was based on?

Moon: Yup. Mhm. I think I’m an observant person. I think most artists are observant. When you see things, you study them.

You don’t just look at them.

food Grilling chicken is an easy way to transform this versatile food into something even more delicious.

Various cultures serve chicken in kebab form after grilling it over an open flame, and taste is a big reason this particular method of cooking chicken is so beloved.

While you might not expect to see kebabs on the menu at your favorite Italian restaurant, “spiedini” is Italian for “little skewers,” proving that Italian chefs recognize how delicious chicken can be when served in kebab form. In this recipe for “Spiedini of Chicken and Zucchini with Almond Salsa Verde” from “Cooking Light: Dinner’s Ready” (Oxmoor House) by The Cooking Light Editors, skewers are paired with a zesty salsa full of nuts, herbs and citrus, which makes for the perfect complement to the smoky grilled flavor.

Spiedini of Chicken and Zucchini with Almond Salsa Verde Makes 6 servings Salsa: 1 cup chopped flat parsley 2 tablespoons chopped almonds, toasted 2 tablespoons chopped fresh chives 3 tablespoons capers, chopped 1⁄2 teaspoon grated lemon rind 3 tablespoons fresh lemon juice 1 tablespoon extra-virgin olive oil 1⁄2 teaspoon chopped fresh thyme 1⁄2 teaspoon chopped fresh oregano 1⁄4 teaspoon kosher salt 1⁄8 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper 1 garlic clove, minced

Tip: Prepare the salsa up to a day ahead, and assemble the skewers earlier in the day. Coat with the seasonings just before grilling.

Spiedini: 11⁄2 pounds skinless, boneless chicken breast, cut into 1-inch pieces 6 small zucchini, cut into 1-inch slices (about 11⁄4 pounds) Cooking spray 1⁄4 teaspoon kosher salt 1⁄8 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper Soak 12 (10-inch) wooden skewers in water for 30 minutes to prevent burning.

Bring the grill to medium-high heat To prepare the salsa, combine the first 12 ingredients; set aside.

To prepare the spiedini, thread the chicken and zucchini alternately on each of the 12 skewers. Coat the spiedini with cooking spray; sprinkle evenly with 1⁄4 teaspoon salt and 1⁄8 teaspoon pepper. Place on a grill rack; grill 6 minutes or until done, turning once. Serve with salsa.

Jasper County Conservation Board will host an OWLS program at the Jasper County Conservation Office, 1030 W. Second St. S. in Newton. The public is invited for 10 a.m. coffee and a program. This program is free and open to the public.

The OWLS program is a conservation program that encourages seniors to stay active and learn new things about the natural world.
