Aging Matters – How to plan your care when living without a spouse or child Planning for longterm care is difficult enough even when you have a child or spouse to help out. Even my parents didn’t want to be a burden on me or my siblings, but in the end we were their “senior care” support.

The family is the backbone of elder care today in the America.

The National Caregiver Alliance says there are 65 million people in the U.S. who provide care for an aged, a chronically ill, or a physically challenged family member or friend during any given year. In 2010, the number of caregivers for a person older than 80 was seven to one.

That number shrinks to four to one in 2030, and three to one by 2050.

The sum of adult children caregivers does not sustain the growing demand to help the old and frail. As the boomers age, the number of family caregivers will

take a dive.

The single people living alone have more to worry about than just growing frail. What happens if one develops a form of dementia, or breaks a limb? My sisters and I face this dilemma, but so do many of our friends and kinfolks.

Most of us live with one or more of the following predicaments: • We never married •We never remarried • Spouses died • Children live away • Or we have no children If you fall in one or more of these categories, here’s how to manage old age: • Adopt a (trusted) friend or family who lives near and assign part of your will to them.

Get advice from an elder law attorney before taking this step.

• Negotiate long-term care with the nieces and nephews.

• Live in a joint household of trusted “extended” family members and friends and help one another.

• Find an elder law attorney who specializes in chronic care advocacy.

• Get a will, a living will or other advance directive, a health care proxy, power of attorney and consider long-term

care insurance. Check out the Five Wishes website.

• Learn the local transportation options — before you’re required to stop driving.

• Get a hobby, eat healthy, make friends, attend church, join a support group, and the senior center.

• Check with the local Department of Aging to understand your longterm care support and service options.

Newton Place fulfilling apartment-style living need

By Jason W. Brooks Newton Daily News When residents of Newton Place Apartments came and went from the main lobby of their building over the noon hour on March 10, they might have seen several out-of-town visitors — and a Congressman.

U.S. Rep. Dave Loebsack was probably the

most prominent guest that day, as a ribboncutting ceremony was held for the 52-unit complex, but there were many other special visitors. Many of the visitors were, in some way, involved with creating a senior-living environment somewhat unique within Jasper County.

“For me, it’s personal,” Loebsack said at the ribbon-cutting. “I

was raised in poverty in Sioux City by my mom, who struggled with mental illness. Folks sometimes struggle to find this kind of housing, and I think it’s absolutely fantastic.”

After originally being set to open in June 2015, excavation and construction delays pushed back the first move-ins to October. Coupled with the ribbon-cutting

five months later, the culmination of the project showed how different organizations and levels of government can work together to make a much-needed project happen.

When construction crews began digging at the site of the complex — located at 222 N. Fourth Ave. W., on the north edge of Newton’s downtown — there were footings from six different buildings discovered. This not only highlighted some the difficulties and intricacies to redevelopment in older Midwestern towns; it also delayed the project while those footings were removed.

It took about two extra months to remove the material.

However, before construction even got started, federal, state and local agencies had to collaborate to create funding and identify needs.

The City of Newton began work with The Miller-Valentine Group in 2014 after getting

feedback from a community housing survey that local residents expressed a need for more affordable housing options for independent seniors.

The city endorsed the partnership with MillerValentine and provided incentives to the project such as a $150,000 infrastructure grant and 10 years of partial property tax rebates. Miller-Valentine was also approved for state tax credits for the project.

Hansen, who spoke at the March 10 ribboncutting, said people from the Newton Development Corporation and the Newton Housing Development Corporation played major roles in various aspects of the project.

Several representatives of Miller-Valentine came to the ribbon-cutting as well, along with some Newton-area officials involved with economic development.

Aging Americans need eyecare most but do they have benefits?

Family Features Julie Beall might be a cancer patient, but she’s truly defined by any number of other titles.

She’s a wife and mother, a registered nurse, a real estate professional, an MBA graduate, a small business owner and a public speaker. She owns a glass art studio. She regularly volunteers at a medical clinic in Africa.

The 50-something is nowhere near retired, although she is nearing retirement age. And she has a message for people of her generation and older: Get annual eye exams. Your life might depend on it.

John Lahr, OD, EyeMed Medical Director and a fellow baby boomer concurs.

“The single most important thing anyone 50 years or older can do for their vision and eye health is to book an annual eye exam,” he said.

“Once you pass the 50year mark, your risk for several serious eye diseases increases and the odds of you requiring vision correction also climbs. What’s more, your optometrist may see signs of a serious physical health condition you never associ-

ated with an eye exam.”

Nobody knows better than Beall. Two years ago she went for a routine eye exam near her home outside Dayton, Ohio, not knowing that her life was about to change forever.

“I didn’t really suspect anything was wrong,” Beall said. “Maybe I was getting a little older. I thought I might need reading glasses; maybe my eyes were getting a little tired.”

Beall’s optometrist noticed an area off the side of the retina that looked unusual. After dilating her eyes, he noted what he thought was a detaching retina. Considering it an ocular emergency,

her optometrist referred her to an ophthalmologist who specialized in retinal diseases. She saw that doctor later the same day and was told she had choroidal melanoma, a potentially fatal form of cancer. Doctors treated Julie with radioactive plaque therapy.

According to Dr. Lahr, Beall’s story of uncovering a serious health concern at the optometrist is not unusual. In addition to preserving eyesight, annual exams can be a window to serious medical conditions like high blood pressure, diabetes, heart disease and high cholesterol.

“The average optometrist sees 2,500 to 3,000

patients annually. And it’s not uncommon for there to be hundreds of times each year you have someone in the optometrist’s chair who hasn’t had a physical in a while. You take a look

This gap sparked an idea from EyeMed, and it began working on an insurance product for AARP members.

“There is a certain segment of the target population that might just say, ‘Why should I get an eye exam every year if I don’t have a vision benefit to help with the costs?’” said Dr. Lahr. “I even talk to people who have the means to cover vision care costs out-ofpocket and are interested in an individual vision benefit.”
