‘Look! Up in the Sky!’ Everyone seemed to be seeing UFOs

Look there! See that?” Dennis Carroll shook his friends out of their lethargy as the men relaxed at the Colfax city park on Sunday evening, July 6, 1947.

Looking skyward, Tom Jordan, Tom Naisbitt, and others observed a “shiny, saucer-like object” northeast of the city, watching it as it passed over the Spring City traveling to the southwest.

“It was quite high in the sky, had a silver color and probably the size of a small plane, but of the saucer type shape,” The Colfax Tribune informed its readers on July 10, 1947. “No sound of any kind could be distinguished.”

“For several weeks now, newspapers and radios have been reporting this mysterious saucer-like object appearing over various parts of the country, particularly in the west and southwest,” the Tribune said. “At first people who saw them in the air had difficulty in getting anyone to believe them, intimating they had had an optical illusion or some other remarks, not too complimentary. However, as the saucer-like objects were seen by more and more people, as well as airplane pilots observing them, the story of their existance [sic] in the air

is being believed.”

Kenneth Arnold, 32, a Boise, Idaho businessman, was believed to have been the first person in modern times to report seeing “flying saucers.”

On June 24, 1947, Arnold was piloting his own single-engine plane from Chehalis to Yakima, Wash., when he beheld a fleet of nine shiny, odd-looking aircraft passing in front of snow-covered Mount Rainier.

He estimated they were about the size of a DC-4 airliner and moving at a fantastic rate of speed, as fast as 1,700 miles per hour. The objects flew erratically, he said, “like speedboats on rough water.”

“They seemed to be alive in the center, to have the ability to change their density,” he said. “No, I have never

health Early signs of Parkinson’s disease

Despite affecting roughly 10 million people worldwide, Parkinson’s disease, a neurodegenerative disorder, remains a mystery to many people.

To people outside of the medical field with no personal or family history of Parkinson’s, the disease may only ring a bell because of some notable names attached to it.

The late Muhammad Ali and actor Michael J. Fox are two household names that made their Parkinson’s diagnoses public. But even those who study Parkinson’s for a living do not know everything about this puzzling disease.

According to the Parkinson’s Foundation, the cause of Parkinson’s disease is largely unknown. While there’s no cure for the disease, various treatment options can help those diagnosed with the disease live as normal and productive a life as possible.

The PF notes that understanding the disease and its progression is the first step to living well. Though the foundation also notes that people first start experiencing symptoms later in the course of the disease, learning to recognize some early symptoms may compel people to seek treatment.

Tremor:

Many people might experience shaking after a vigorous workout or when they are dealing with stress or injury. But the PF notes that a tremor in a finger, thumb, hand, or chin while at rest is a common early sign of Parkinson’s disease.

Small handwriting:

Handwriting can change as people age, especially if they are experiencing stiffness in their hands or their vision is deteriorating. But micrographia, a disorder in which handwriting becomes abnormally small and cramped, is another early indicator of Parkinson’s disease.

Loss of smell:

Difficulty sleeping:

The PF advises people who are having trouble smelling foods such as bananas, dill pickles or licorice speak with their physicians about Parkinson’s disease. Temporary loss of smell due to something like the common cold, congestion or the flu is not an early indicator of Parkinson’s.

A significant other may notice their partner moving suddenly during sleep, and such movements may be indicative of Parkinson’s. The PF notes that periodic tossing and turning is normal, as is quick jerks of the body during initial sleep and in lighter stages of sleep are common and should not be mistaken for Parkinson’s.

Stiffness:

Constipation:

Stiffness related to current or past injuries or even arthritis is not indicative of Parkinson’s.

But stiffness in the arms, body and legs that is unrelated to injury or arthritis and does not go away with movement might be a sign of Parkinson’s. The PF notes that people sometimes describe this symptom by saying their feet feel stuck to the floor when they try to move.

People who strain to move their bowels might be showing an early sign of Parkinson’s. However, various factors, such as dehydration and a diet without adequate fiber, can cause constipation. In addition, men and women on medication may want to look into side effects of their medications to determine if their medicine, and not Parkinson’s, is the cause of their difficulty moving their bowels.

Newton’s Forty Men and Eight Horses chapter grants remaining funds to Skiff Medical Center

ike most small towns, Newton is still recovering from the cookie-cutter era of America: the 1950s, its glamorous land boat cars, white picket fence suburbs, drive-by interstates and strip after strip of malls. Newton didn’t always look like this. Wally Schermerhorn, a 75-year-old United States Army veteran remembers when the streets bustled. Charitable fraternal organizations thrived in this environment: Masons, Lyons, the American Legion, and one group, La Sociéte des Quarante Hommes et Huit Cheveaux (the Society of Forty Men and Eight Horses) that stands out in Schermerhorn’s memory.

The Forty and Eight grew out of a Philadelphia American Legion chapter in 1920. World War I veterans named the group after the symbol emblazoned across boxcars that each transported 40 doughboys and eight equines across the hexagonal continent. It’s now a national, invitation-only organization, and each chapter is called a “voiture” after the boxcars crammed with man and beast.

Since 1941, it has contributed to nursing scholarship programs nationwide.

At its peak, Newton’s voiture counted 400 men on its roll, Schermerhorn’s father among them. They met behind the large, preserved panes of the brick building across from what is now the dimly lit and ironically named Manhattan bar.

“The history, it’s ripe history. I was there when I was a little boy, and it was quite the place,” Schermerhorn said.

On Friday and Saturday nights, the space swirled with cigarette smoke, the trademark of the postwar era. Clean-cut men in suits and ties laid straights, continued on page 9 8

flushes and pairs on tables of clinking poker chips. In the early morning mist, they’d hope to spot a buck loping through the fields, or they’d cast their lines into the rippling tides of chance and hope for a slick, gilled trophy.

Even their charitable events screamed a good time. The Forty and Eight hosted boxing matches and ran the concession stands at Maytag Park.

“They spread their funds throughout different charities around the nation, actually,” Schermerhorn said, “but most of it was spent right here in Jasper County.

Year after year, the Forty and Eight provided a nursing scholarship through the hospital that has become Skiff Medical Center.

Today, Newton’s voiture exhibits the same symptoms as the town itself: Under 20 members who belong to the organization meet only once a year. Since Schermerhorn joined almost a decade ago, they haven’t thrown a fundraiser or held regular initiation ceremonies; Schermerhorn is one of the chapter’s younger members.

Although membership continued to dwindle, the Forty and Eight still sat on almost $15,000 that it had maintained and invested from the fêtes during the voiture’s active years.

If they did nothing with the funds, that money would revert to the national governing body of the Forty and Eight upon the voiture’s eventual dissolution. When the chapter met for their annual 2018 meeting, they discussed how to disburse their remaining financial cushion.

“We didn’t want that money that’s raised here in Newton and Jasper County to go back to a national level,” Schermerhorn said. “It would go to a good cause, but it’s money that was raised here, and we thought it needed to stay here.”

As Chef de Gare (Chief of Station) John Billingsly presided over the meeting, the members present agreed to donate the entire sum to Skiff Medical Center for nursing scholarships. The organization’s long tradition of funding scholarship programs and Skiff’s pre-existing donation infrastructure made the hospital an easy choice.

“Newton’s having some tough times,” Schermerhorn raised his eyebrows. “There are not a whole lot of good paying jobs around here, and since we’ve always funded nursing, we just decided maybe now would be a good time to take that money in there and put it to good use once and for all.”

At the end of June, the Forty and Eight’s Donnie Swihart presented the check to Skiff.

the staff to keep up with changing medical practice and technology.

Their work will be the legacy of Newton’s Forty and Eight voiture. Long after the organization becomes a page in a local history, their funds will continue to serve the community in which they invested for almost a century.

Fry tenders in oil at 350ºF for 3-5 minutes each, or until chicken reaches an internal temperature of 165ºF. Spread 1 tablespoon of Chobani(r) Savor on each tortilla. Top with 2 ounces of sliced crispy chicken and 2 tablespoons of salsa to serve.

“Iowans Too ... See the ‘Flying Saucers,’” the Associated Press reported on the front page of the Newton Daily News, on July 7, 1947, in an account that did not mention the Colfax sighting.

The Tennants & Williams, publishers of the Colfax paper, obviously erred when they opined “this is the second one of these mysterious flying missiles seen in Iowa, this same one evidently being reported by a farmer near Mitchellville.”

The AP story in the NDN stated that initial reports of the saucers came from Waterloo and Keokuk. One Iowan, in an apparent attempt to upstage Arnold, “said he believed he had seen one of the saucers as long ago as July 1946.”

Orrie Miller, engineer at radio station KSO, reported seeing a bright object in the latter year while he was driving from Muscatine to Winfield at about dusk. He said at first he thought it was a locomotive headlight, but then realized

that it, too, was noiseless.

“I[t] was low in the sky and was flying at high speed in level flight,” Miller, an amateur astronomer, said. “It appeared pear shaped and gave a brilliant light.”

had no tail and its level flight was not like that of a meteorite.”

The NDN ran a second AP story in that same edition headlined “Flying Saucers Reported In More Than 38 States.”

The hysteria continued throughout much of the 1950s. It was during this time that the world’s first alien contactee appeared, 61-yearold “Professor” George Adamski, a Polish-born mystic.

On Nov. 20, 1952, Adamski left six friends near Desert Center, Cal. and there encountered a landed spacecraft piloted by a long-haired, blond Venusian called Orthon, with whom he communicated telepathically and through sign language. The extraterrestrial visitor had come to warn us of the dangers of nuclear proliferation and pollution, Adamski said.

Bill Spaulding, of the Ground Saucer Watch in Phoenix, Ariz., predicted that 1978 would be a bumper year for UFO contacts. Late that summer, strange lights were seen in Iowa from Ottumwa to Fort Dodge.

“Many persons in the local area reported sighting the unexplained lights in the sky, including workers at the Maytag Company,” the NDN reported on Sept. 8, 1978. “One local observer reported that the lights ‘looked like a peacock’s tail.’”

volunteer Volunteering as an older adult: How to find the right fit for your new lifestyle

Many parents feel involving their children in volunteering at an early age can have a profound, long-lasting impact on their kids. But youngsters are not the only ones who can reap great rewards from volunteering, as studies show that men and women at, beyond or approaching retirement age also benefit greatly from volunteer work.

Research from the Corporation for National and Community Service found that more than 20 million older adults contributed in excess of three billion hours of community service time each year from 2011 to 2013. The reasons why older adults volunteer are varied, but in its 2014 survey the AARP’s Experience Corps found that 97 percent of its volunteers indicated that their volunteer work with the organization gave them a sense of purpose.

Older adults who want to volunteer but have little or no history with volunteering might not know where to begin with regard to finding the right oppor-

tunity. The right fit can make all the difference for volunteers and the people they help, and the following tips might help older adults as they look for an opportunity that best utilizes their skills and experience.

• Know your schedule. Older adults who are still working but want to volunteer may have a firm grasp on their schedules, but even retirees should not overestimate how much time they have to volunteer. Before you begin to look for an opportunity, write down your commitments and daily schedule, using this list to determine how much free time you have to volunteer. Some opportunities require greater time commitments than others, so make sure you know just how much time you can devote to an opportunity before signing up.

• Give due consideration to your experience. Older adults who have retired or are on the cusp of retirement have a lifetime of experience they can

use to help others. Imparting wisdom learned in your professional life can provide a sense of purpose and even make you feel as though you are still actively involved in the industry where you built your professional reputation.

But life experience can also prove invaluable in volunteering opportunities. Mentoring programs give volunteers the chance to help young people, and such opportunities can involve more than just offering professional advice.

• Don’t downplay the significance of certain opportunities. Volunteering opportunities come in many variations, and each is significant in its own right. Coaching a grandchild’s soccer team can have as significant an impact on the people you help as other volunteering opportunities.

Volunteers offer their time because they have a passion to help others, and that help can be given in a myriad of ways.

• Leave time for the rest of your life. Volunteering is a selfless act, and volunteers are the backbone of many successful charitable organizations. But older men and women should leave time for the rest of their lives as well.

Retirement should be fulfilling but also include time for recreation, so don’t downplay how important hobbies are to you in an attempt to find more time to volunteer. No retiree wants to grow resentful of his or her volunteer work because it leaves little time for other pursuits, so do your best to balance your charitable endeavors with the other things in life that matter to you.

Finding the right volunteer opportunity can make all the difference for older men and women who want to give back to their communities.

Pancake Breakfast

Join us for a non-scary, fun family event featuring: Jasper your friendly host and “Natures Glow Show.” Come on out to the Izaak Walton League and enjoy long hikes with educational and musical skits. Marshmallow roasting, glow face paint, black light animal tracking, stargazing campfire music, wagon rides and pumpkin decorating. The fee is $3 a person; ages 3 and under are free.

Kellogg Lions hosts a pancake breakfast.

Menu includes pancakes, sausage, scrambled eggs, coffee, juice and milk. Freewill donation with the proceeds going to a local organization. It’s the first Saturday of the month.
