ommunity members now have a safe way to dispose of leftover prescription and overthe-counter medications. MercyOne Newton Medical Center has recently installed a specially constructed medication drop box in the main lobby of the hospital, 204 N. Fourth Ave. E. “MercyOne Newton is currently one of only a few locations in Jasper County that help people to safely dispose of their own med-

ications,” Phil Schieffer, MercyOne pharmacy manager said.

“We’re excited about the direct and measurable impact this will have on the safety of our community.”

Among the risks of keeping expired medications on hand: • Over time, medications degrade and are no longer effective; using these medications can lead to diminished efficacy • Outdated medicines stored alongside current prescriptions

Of the deaths in 2016, about two-thirds had opioids involved. In less than 20 years, health-care experts have seen a fivefold increase in the number of opioid-related overdose deaths. More than 100 Americans die each day, on average, from opioid overdose.

“We’re excited about the direct and measurable impact this drop box will have on the safety of our community,” Schieffer said.

The box, which was made possible through funds from the Iowa Board of Pharmacy, is a metal receptacle secured to the floor and under continuous camera monitoring. Pharmacy staff are responsible for emptying the box when it is full, and they are the

only personnel with access to the box and its contents.

Disposal is limited to prescription (both controlled substances and non-controlled substances) or over-the-counter medications brought in by a patient or patient representative (such as a family member). Regulations require that staff cannot dispose of medications on behalf of a patient or patient representative.

Disposal must be performed by the patient or patient representative.

Items that are not to be disposed of in the box include needles, lancets, test strips, biological waste, aerosols, commercial waste or illicit drugs.

“We are so pleased to start this program here at MercyOne Newton,” Schieffer said. “We hope that it will provide for a safer Jasper County.”

A love of cycling 91-year-old Newton woman can’t wait to get back on a bike

Brindza: The only thing I really remember is stopping in Newton on a Wednesday night and we got to sleep in our own bed.

So you and your husband rode the whole route?

Brindza: Oh yes!

Was it difficult?

Brindza: Well, we trained for it. Weeks before, or as soon as we could get on the road, we would build up to riding 100 miles every weekend to get us in shape. So it didn’t bother us to go the 60 to 70 miles that they went each day. Some of them that didn’t prepare dropped out before too long. They couldn’t take it!

Do you think that training helped?

Brindza: Oh yes. I wouldn’t have tried it if we hadn’t.

Were you and your husband avid bikers back in the day?

Brindza: We belonged to a bike club here in Newton. But we just mostly biked for our own entertainment. We did the 100-mile bike ride, but we’ve done those before so it wasn’t much of a chore for us. We just liked to ride bikes.

ary Brindza, 91, couldn’t be more excited about getting to ride a bike again.

At Newton Village, staff have been fundraising to purchase an All Ability Cycle for residents to ride around. Typically, the bikes — which are designed for individuals with special needs or physical limitations — cost about $10,000 to $12,000. Although the local retirement community is just a few thousand dollars short of its goal, Brindza can hardly contain herself.

As an avid cyclist for many years, Brindza spoke with Senior Lifestyles about her lifelong biking experiences: Someone told me you rode RAGBRAI several years ago?

Brindza: I rode it in (1975). My husband and I both rode it. And then the next year he rode it again. I went along with our station wagon and our 12-year-old daughter. At night, she would sleep on the bench seat in the front, and we had a mattress in the back that we slept on. That was really fun, too.

Were you in town this past year when RAGBRAI stayed over night?

Brindza: No, I wasn’t really available for that. But one year they came through my niece and her entourage, which was eight people, stopped at our house the night they were here in Newton.

How long has it been since you’ve been on a bike?

Brindza: Oh it’s been quite a while. My husband made me quit riding because I kept falling. (laughing) And I don’t know why I did! continued on page 7 April 2019 • Senior Lifestyles

Bike continued from page 6 I used to ride along really good and then suddenly I was one the ground. He said, “You better not be riding anymore.” So I kind of gave it up. I sure hated to though.

How old were you at the time?

Brindza: Well … let’s see … I must have been in my 80s. I’m not sure. I’ll be 92 in July.

You must have really loved biking then.

Brindza: Oh yes. From the time I got my first bike I just loved riding bikes.

Does this nicer weather we’ve been having bring back any biking memories?

Brindza: We used to go down to Red Rock and bike. When we were practicing (for RAGBRAI) we went to all the little towns. We went to Pella. We went to Reasnor. We went to Kellogg. We went to Colfax. We went to Lynnville. We went to Sully. My husband would look on the map and try to get hard surface roads that we could ride on.

Did that always happen?

Brindza: Well one time he goofed. It said hard surface roads but they had just put gravel on it about this big (motioning a half-dollarsized circle with her fingers). We had to push our bikes around mostly on that road because we couldn’t ride on it. But it was all fun.

What times of the year would you bike?

Brindza: Just when the weather was decent. When we first got our bikes it’s when you didn’t have to worry about your kids being stolen or anything. My brother and I would get up early in the morning and we would go biking all summer in the morning before my folks were up. That’s when we did most of our biking, in the morning when it was cooler.

I heard you are particularly excited for Newton Village to purchase an

All Ability Bicycle?

Brindza: Yes! When they brought it to introduce it to us I got to ride on the one in the wheelchair. It was neat! We have been very excited. My husband was particularly anxious to get this, but he passed away last July. But we have done all we can to increase the funds to get it through as soon as we can.

So when Newton Village gets the bike are you going to be the first person to ride it?

Brindza: I hope so!

food How to choose a protein powder Learn the key differences in these popular protein powder supplements If you’ve ever shopped for protein powder, you know: options are endless. There’s whey, there’s soy, there’s even pea protein, hemp protein and egg white protein powders. Is one better for a muscle-building, post-workout shake than the other? Or what if you just want to add protein to a morning smoothie? Below is a breakdown of some common types of protein powder supplements and what each is good for.

Something to keep in mind: The Daily Value for protein is 50 grams a day based on a 2,000-calorie diet, but some people work to get .6 to .8 grams per kilogram of body weight.

Whey Protein

Whey protein is a byproduct of milk and perhaps the most popular type of protein supplement on shelves. Whey enters your bloodstream faster than any other protein and boasts the highest level of the amino acid leucine, which is good for providing muscles with the necessary fuel to power through a workout and build muscle. It’s considered the most effective powder for building muscle; so, if that’s the goal, aim to consume it within an hour after exercise. You’ll see whey in two forms: concentrate and isolate.

Whey concentrate includes some lactose (the sugar found in milk products) and fat. It’s about 78 to 88 percent protein and is often more flavorful and less expensive

than whey isolate, which is about 98 percent protein and contains very little, if any, carbs and fat.

Casein Protein

Casein, like whey, is a protein found in milk. The biggest difference is that casein takes longer to digest, which is why some athletes choose to take it before bed.

Whey protein, on the other hand, absorbs more quickly, which is why it’s often taken immediately after a workout.

Egg White Protein

Nutrition facts per serving: 235 calories, 5g fat, 0g saturated fat, 0mg cholesterol, 398mg sodium, 30g carbohydrate, 5g fiber, 15g sugar, 22g protein.

Egg white protein is just what it sounds like: dried egg whites that have been turned into a powder. This protein digests more slowly than whey but faster than casein. Although not quite as good as whey or casein in terms of muscle protein synthesis, it’s still a good option for a post-workout or meal-replacement smoothie. It’s also a good option for anyone who is allergic to or avoids dairy (since whey protein and casein protein are derived from milk).

Soy Protein

Soy protein is made from ground soybeans that have been dehulled and defatted. It digests at a moderate rate, like egg white protein, and contains greater amounts of the amino acids glutamine and arginine, which may help support immune function, digestive health and brain function. It’s a complete protein and considered the most effective plant-derived source for building or maintaining muscle, but the

verdict is still out on its potential health risks for women with a history of estrogen-related cancers and men with lower testosterone levels. If you fall into either camp, you may want to steer clear, or at least vary your protein sources.

Pea Protein

Pea protein, derived from the yellow pea, is the most highly digestible of the plant proteins, making it a good alternative for anyone with a sensitive stomach who doesn’t want to do dairy or soy. But it’s not a complete protein — it’s low in two amino acids — so pair it with another plantbased protein such as hemp or rice to round out its amino acid profile and make it “complete.” If you want higher protein content, choose a “pea protein isolate.”

The slightly lower-protein “pea protein powder” is also a good choice, and readily available in organic varieties.

Vega Protein

Vega protein powder is made from a multisource plant-based protein blend, including pea protein, brown rice protein and sacha inchi protein (an omega-3-rich seed from the Amazon rainforest).
