G

rowing up in the south Chicago suburbs, Holly Rowden knew of only one kind of hot dog, and it’s run “through the garden.”

Over the years, Rowden held on tightly to the taste of a Chicago-style hot dog while living in different places around the world.

These days, Rowden is in Clinton, Iowa, and has brought a common sight from the big city setting to the city’s Mississippi riverfront.

With a pair of red-and-white umbrellas attached to her shiny silver cart parked along Riverfront Drive and Sixth Avenue North, Holly’s Hot Dogs has served walkers, joggers, and passers-by along the riverfront, and even the occasional Lumberkings baseball fan on a rare weekday home date.

“Everywhere you went, there was a vibrant downtown street,” Rowden said.

“We didn’t have that here. So I said that I wanted to do something, and I said it for about 4 years.

“Finally my husband said, ‘Do something, or quit talking about it.’”

The stand is the first of its kind to make a home along the riverfront, parked along the levee and not far from Riverview Park, the marina, and a pair of little league baseball diamonds – as well as Ashford University Stadium, home of the Lumberkings.

From Tuesday through Saturday during the spring and summer – when the weather is nice – Holly’s Hot Dogs serves up Chicago-style dogs on poppyseed buns, and more. Polish sausages, jalapeño dogs, and cheddar brats also are available, and can be topped with cheese, sauerkraut or chili.

If those offerings don’t do anything for you, Rowden and her staff of a couple of seasonal helpers have come up with different things – “with a twist,” she says.

One speciality dog makes the rounds on the menu each week. Recent weeks have included a bacon and macaroni and cheese dog, a pineapple habernero salsa dog, a Seattle dog (topped with cream cheese and sauteed onions), and even a meat lovers pizza dog – inspired by a

The menu has more than just hot dogs, too.

Late last summer, Rowden tried selling pork carnita street tacos, topped with diced onions, cilantro, homemade lime, and sweet sour cream sauce.

Why the expansion?

“I love tacos,” Rowden said, “and I like a really good taco.”

The abundance of creative variety has helped Holly’s Hot Dogs become more popular each year Rowden has been in business. She’s seen the riverfront trails and parks used more, and a quick lunch is within sight of all of the fun.

and the marina – to set up her stand seems logical, but that wasn’t quite the case.

“I’d like to [think] that were was a lot of thought process into that, but technically no,” Rowden said. “At first, I thought we’d go [downtown] on Second Street where there’s all kinds of traffic.”

A talk with a city park employee changed her mind. She then spotted two tables and a garbage can. The dream of seeing people sitting at the benches and eating hot dogs and disposing of a condiment-soaked napkins made her decide upon her territory – which just happened to be a few hundred feet from Ashford University Stadium’s front gate. “‘You don’t want to go on Second Street. Go up on the riverfront. It’s prettier. People are in a better mood,’” Rowden recalled the city worker saying. “We took his advice and started driving around.”

Holly’s Hot Dogs operates from 11 a.m. to 1:30 p.m., but when the weather is bad, she’ll take her operations back to her kitchen in downtown Clinton. On one May afternoon, the temperature was just over 50 degrees and the winds topped 25 miles per hour, making it feel even colder atop the levee.

If the red-and-white umbrellas are nowhere to be seen, and customers are craving a hot dog, they know who to call. Sometimes people will come in through the alley, walk into her kitchen and ask for a hot dog.

“Over the past 6 years, I’ve made some very good and loyal customers,” Rowden said. “It’s amazing how important the weather plays in a business like this.”

Rowden and her seasonal help will take orders and deliver during her business hours when the weather is unsuitable for operating a stand. It’s a way for her to not lose out on business, and also to further establish a rapport with her usual customers.

“I’ve become more involved in the community, just because of the people I know from there,” Rowden said. “You get to meet connections, and I like getting to know the people.”

Holly’s Hot Dogs also caters for certain events.

Every Monday, they’ll get called to businesses in Clinton, Camanche and Fulton to serve during lunch breaks. They once set up stands throughout the annual RAGBRAI bicycle ride across Iowa, which Rowden said was a lot of fun, but a lot of work.

At any given time at the hot dog stand along the riverfront, there’s a lot of work, but much more fun.

“It’s a beautiful, beautiful location,” Rowden said.

Lumber is king again

The Sawmill Museum is a showcase for Clinton’s lumber history. The city was once hailed as “The Lumber Capital of the World.” The museum also is a stop on the Great River Road, a national scenic byway.

f you see a larger-than-life musclebound man with an ax hanging around the train tracks in Clinton, don’t worry. It’s just Paul Bunyan – he’s a lumberjack and he’s OK, and he’s there to welcome visitors to The Sawmill Museum.

Sitting beside the railroad tracks in this Iowa river town, the museum celebrates the history of America’s sawmill, lumber, and forestry industries, and Clinton’s role in lumber’s history.

Bunyan, with his wide and welcoming grin, gives the museum a thumbs up, and it’s easy to see why. It’s a fun and special place indeed.

Once inside, I received another warm wel-

come, this time from Matt Parbs, the museum’s executive director, who explained what was in the museum and then showed me around before settling me down in a parlor to meet four lumber barons. I wasn’t even nervous when their portraits of them started to talk to me.

The animatronic gentlemen were Chancy Lamb, David Joyce, William Young and Earnest Heinrich Struve and they talked about their once-booming lumber business. Today, little remains in the town of the lumber industry – the most high profile reminder is the city’s Minor League baseball team, the Clinton Lumberings – but at one time, the city was hailed as

“The Lumber Capital of the World,” and the museum helps explain how it grew to live up to that boastful billing.

Lamb, Joyce and Young were among the lumbermen who banded together in 1870 with Frederick Weyerhaeuser to form the Mississippi River Logging Co., which took over every stage of logging.

After the parlor visit, I took a closer look at the areas Parbs had guided me through earlier.

One of the stops was the working sawmill area.

Visitors can schedule a sawyer demonstration by calling the museum in advance.

My feet led me to the lumberjack camp. The kid in me had noticed the small cabins when I entered the museum. I ventured into the foreman’s office just before I was surrounded by a group of school children who were visiting and had discovered the cabins about the same time I did. It was fun to see their enthusiasm as they ran from cabin to cabin.

Looking around and over the students, I saw the cook’s shanty and the bunkhouse. I slipped away to see a pathway through a tree, a two-man saw, and then sought refuge in a much quieter exhibit of Warren E. Ostrom’s artwork. Also quieter was the exhibit of lumber machines from the Struve sawmill.

The table lets people select a boat and pilot it down a miniature Mississippi River, where they can manipulate the water flow and navigate the boats by­islands and dams. The 40-foot table has been a work in progress, stretching back to 2015 when museum organizers started

the wheels in motion.

At one end, of table visitors start in the northwest woods of Wisconsin. The trees have been cut down and turned into logs ready to go down the Mississippi River to the Clinton sawmills.

Children and adults pilot the the steamboats to get their logs downriver and reach the safe haven of Clinton, where the logs will be turned into lumber by the mills. Seeing children in action here was great. They ran around, back and forth, smiles on their faces. Waterproof wraps are available, I used the step-back-out-ofthe-way method.

This museum is well worth the visit, and Parb continues to plan things for the future, all in an effort to stay on the cutting edge of helping people learn more about local history as well as how logs were transformed into lumber that not only helped build an industry, but an entire nation. s

Dentist and family offer services to less fortunate people in other countries

everal years ago, Dr. Michael Callan found himself feeling like an orphan – and soon after, was inspired to help actual orphans worldwide.

“My mom died in 1999, and my dad in 2005,” the 56-year-old Clinton-based dentist said of how he began working with the Medical Teams International group to provide dental services overseas.

After his father’s death, he heard a speaker at the Church of the Open Door in Clinton discuss an orphaned boy who had been raised in the jungle by monkeys.

“I though, what if I went and helped real orphans?”

Dr. Michael Callan recalled.

Callan In 2006, the dentist started going to a group of orphanages in Cambodia through Medical Teams International. Callan said the group is similar to Doctors without Borders, an international, non-governmental, humanitarian medical organization best known for its projects in conflict zones and countries affected by endemic diseases.

Callan generally travels every November to Cambodia and every February to the Philippines, and has spent time in Kenya and Haiti, providing general dental care.

Now, Callan generally travels every November to Cambodia and every February to the Philippines. He’s alsohas spent time in Kenya and Haiti, providing general dental care.

“I go two to three times a year. We’re working on a trip to an orphanage in Mexico,” Callan said.

The road to assisting people with dental health started early for Callan, who grew up in Dubuque, Iowa. He said a family friend was an orthodontist.

“My dad wanted me to be a radiologist. He forgave me later on,” Callan joked.

Graduating in 1988 from dental school at the University of Michigan, Callan has worked as a dentist for 30 years, and an orthodontist for 27 of those. He now runs Michael A. Callan DDS, MS and PC in Clinton. He’s also

passing on what he’s learned, teaching orthodontic and pediatric dentistry classes every Monday at the University of Iowa in Iowa City.

Pediatric dentistry is a focus of Callan’s overseas work, which he calls missionary dentistry.

“They need a general dentist. We generally go to orphanages or really impoverished areas.

We give lessons on good dental hygiene, and how to clean teeth. We’re not able to do bridges. I can take out a front tooth,” Callan said.

Medical Teams International works with an in-country partner to provide services. Callan also has worked with other churches in the U.S., such as the Archdiocese of Joliet, sending a medical dental team to the Philippines.

The children whom Callan helps often don’t start as orphans.

“By the time they get to the orphanage, they’re in rough shape. Often, they have rice, fish, and some vegetables, but there’s not a lot

of money for things that are hard on teeth. In Third World countries, they’ll chew on a sugar cane stalk,” Callan said.

Callan and his wife, Lauri, have three children, Katie, 28, Laura, 26, and Will, 23.

“My daughters are both missionary dentistry team members,” Callan said.

While all the people he helps are special there’s usually at least one on every trip who touches Callan’s heart. He recalled one little girl who had a cleft lip and cleft palate that hadn’t been repaired.

“She had some teeth that had to come out before the surgery. They treat some people like that as if they’re cursed. She was very timid. I prayed, ‘Lord, if this one thing could go easy for her, please let this tooth come out,’” Callan said.

“There’s hardly any trip where there isn’t overwhelming sense of love, a touch of God.” s

SPIRIT SET FREE Clinton woman determined to bring health awareness to town

ree Spirit Yoga Fitness has slowly grown into a studio not to be ignored by people in the Clinton area.

Although born a Texan, owner Kelli Jahn has called Clinton, Iowa, her home since she was 7, and she’s determined to bring a new awareness of health to her hometown.

Jahn left Clinton to attend college and ended up in the Quad Cities for about 9 years.

“I have two kids – I have a girl who is 12, and a son who is 10,” she said. “I only moved here when my daughter was going into kindergarten, because we basically lived in Moline and I wanted to raise my kids in a smaller community. So that’s kinda why we came back this way.”

Armed with a master’s degree in education, she worked for Iowa State University Extension in Clinton County as the youth and family educator. Then there came a time when she decided to follow her dreams.

“I opened my first yoga studio about 4 years ago,” Jahn said. “It was just in a small building in the north end, up in the Lyons area, and we outgrew that space in a matter of months.”

She also noticed something was missing on the road to fitness and nutrition goals.

“We don’t really have health food co-ops and the type of things that they have in the Quad Cities or Iowa City, so I really started to focus on trying to find ways to help people with nutrition, as well as fitness.”

About a year ago, she found the building she’s now in, which would allowed her room to grow with this idea.

“I built my entire business plan based on bridging the gap between nutrition and fitness and helping women,” Jan said. “Not that men aren’t important (men are welcome at the studio) but I’ve noticed that women kind of sacrifice themselves for their families and their kids.”

Jahn said she wanted to create a place inviting in atmosphere and environment, where people could come and relax. In this atmosphere, there needed to be a sense of community, something she had needed when she was trying to get into shape herself.

“I was just one of those people who spent several years to get into shape and I needed that community, so when I found the community, I wanted to embrace it and provide that for other women, because I knew that it helped me,” Jahn said.

Free Spirit has been in its current building for about 3 years and it’s kept growing.

“We’ve never really had a down time,” she said.

New on the scene at Free Spirit is the Fuel Bar & Cafe, which serves smoothies. Bearing colorful names, the smoothies, some of which are in a protein series, are, of course, good for the customer.

“Everything we have here is healthy,” Jahn said. “It’s not made from concentrates. It’s not made from syrups. It’s all healthy. So I have actually written out what the functions are of the smoothies.”

The informational list of each smoothie gives a description of its benefits, nutrients, ingredients and other details.

“Not only are we providing quality ingredients,” she said, “but we are trying to educate, so people can make better decisions even when they’re not here.”

Also new is a salad bar with entirely organic ingredients.

“We’re going to be starting it 2 days a week, Mondays and Wednesdays,” Jahn said. “We’ll be serving salad bar and soup from 11 to 1. It’s all clean eating. There’re no additives. There’s no added sugar. What you eat’s all clean.”

That means any protein used is locally purchased meat, such as grassfed beef and free-range, no-antibiotics-added chicken, she said.

“My goal is to have a reputation that people know if they come here, no matter what they order is healthy,” Jahn said. “They don’t have to even worry about it.”

Behind the food is a 1,000-square-foot commercial kitchen. It’s used for the salad bar and soups, as well as online lunch orders.

“Every week we do a menu online,” she said. “We post entrees and people can order them and we cook on Fridays. Then people can pick their food up and they use them for lunches.”

Jahn said they’re trying to adapt slowly to being a more environmentally-aware, green-type facility. This can be seen in to-go containers that are biodegradable and recyclable.

“I’ve done a lot of traveling for my training from East Coast to West Coast, and I’ve found that we’re very much behind the times when it comes to healthy eating and to just being aware of our environment and how at risk it is,” she said. “I’m just trying to bring back some of the things that I’ve learned. Even though I’m one place with a small change, the more people can see it, the more it’s significant, and so at least our facility is really trying to be more green, more health conscious, more environment conscious.”

But to get to the latest at Free Spirit, yoga/group fitness and CrossFit first had to put in an appearance.

“It’s kind of like we’ve developed a kind of extended second family here.”

Yoga is for all ages, and a wide variety of classes are offered.

Behind the yoga studio is the CrossFit gym. Free Spirit Yoga Fitness is an affiliate of CrossFit, which is a strength and conditioning program that focuses on constantly varied, functional movements executed at high intensity across broad time and modal domains.

“We plan a program out months ahead of time,” she said. “You’re not just doing random workouts.”

Jahn said CrossFit is supposed to make you strong and allow you to grow strong in everyday movements, such as squatting, bending and lifting. It’s available for all levels.

Community also is big in CrossFit, Jahn said.

“The people drive you,” she said. “It’s not just walking in and being on your own. CrossFit becomes like your second family. They come to class with you. They push each other. It’s the same thing actually with yoga and group fitness in general. Group fitness is community.”

Children aren’t left out at Free Spirit. Children 7 to 12 can participate, at this time.

“We have a couple of kids’ programs,” Jahn said. “We have a kids’ yoga program and a kids’ fitness program, which takes place in the gym.

We’re very family based.”

Free Spirit Yoga Fitness is still settling in.

“It’s been a process,” Jahn said. “It’s been 4 years. Even though we haven’t done a huge amount of advertising, we’ve been growing, we’ve been sustaining.”

In the business are eight yoga/group fitness instructors and nine CrossFit coaches, including Jahn and her husband, Clint Jahn, who, she said, spends all of his free time at Free Spirit.

She said when she quit her full-time job to focus on growing her business, he supported her every step of the way.

“He has been a huge supporter,” Jahn said.

She said she thinks Clinton is a great town and there are a lot of awesome things to do there and organizations and groups are working on improvements. Not only that, but people are returning to town.

“There’re a lot of young professionals who have moved back to the area that are really trying to build Clinton up,” Jahn said. “I’m excited to be part of that – to see what we can do for the community in the future.” s

s a certified travel consultant and accredited cruise counselor for Gateway Travel and Cruise in Clinton, Iowa, Mary Jo Dopson has assisted thousands on their quest for that special personal or business destination.

Fresh out of college in 1984 and just 22, Dopson joined Gateway Travel, not knowing that she had landed her dream job.That was 34 years ago and she has been a part of an industry that has undergone significant changes and

redefined itself to meet people’s needs in an ever-changing travel environment.

Gateway Travel and Cruise has an enviable history. Established in 1945, it has been in business for almost three-quarters of a century.

Early on, coordinating train transportation was a primary business focus. Today, the business is owned by father and daughter, Robert and Stacey Schroeder, and the array of services and programs offered is practically endless.

“But America is resilient and America got moving again,” she said.
