Small-town service Local sisters can work with small budgets BY LUCINDA HALL For I Do

E

very bride dreams of having a magical day that captures the uniqueness of the couple’s personalities. Nevertheless, the details can be daunting, throwing even the calmest of brides into a tizzy. “Welcome to your happily ever after,” said the charming signboard that greets brides-to-be at Elizabeth Ann Event Design and Rental in Franklin Grove. The calming message immediately begins to soothe even the most anxious of brides. “Elizabeth Ann is unique because it is run by two small-town women who believe that just because you live in a small town, or have a smaller budget, does not mean that you cannot have the event of your dreams,” said Renee Henert, 23, who, with her sister, Dana Dolbeare, 27, purchased the business in 2017. “We work hard to make

able, the two sisters jumped at the opportunity to start their own business – something they had wanted to do for a long time. The sister team is well balanced. Henert brings an expertise in design, while Dolbeare has a degree

in business. Both share an entrepreneurial spirit. The name is a tribute to the legacy of their grandmothers, whose wedding photos are on display at their studio. “It incorporates the middle names of our beloved grandmothers – Charlotte Elizabeth and Mary Ann,” Henert said. As wedding planners, their goal is to take the guesswork out of planning one of a couple’s most memorable days. SERVICE 64

“A lot of clients come to us totally overwhelmed and don’t know where to start,” Henert said. “Working with a wedding planner allows them to tell us exactly what they want and we do the busy work of finding venues, vendors, the best prices and quality products.” They have developed a planning process that engages the couple at the first brainstorming consultation to discover what inspires them. Budgets and priorities are discussed. Brides are encouraged to bring images, usually Pinterest boards, to help them visualize the venue and decor. From there, Henert and Dolbeare begin planning for a second meeting. “The design meeting is where ideas come to life,” Henert said. “We pull out multiple decor options so they can visualize what it will look like at the event and choose exactly what they want.” One of their specialties is creating the decor for the wedding and reception, including such items as custom head table designs and linen. “We have decorated many different venues, so we are able to give recommendations on what will fit the clients’ personalities best,” Henert said. “Currently, the most popular venues are natural buildings, such as barns and pavilions, that give a rustic, laid back feeling.”

Elizabeth Ann Event Design and Rental Address: 111 Whitney St., Studio 101, Franklin Grove Phone: 815-712-3852 Email: renee@elizabetheventdesign.com Online: elizabethanneventdesign.blog and Facebook As planners, the sisters are in tune with budget parameters and offer partial and full event planning. “Depending on the package our client goes with, it could be anything from simply making sure all the details are in place and perfectly arranged, or it could be full day-of coordination where we make sure everyone is where they need to be when they need to be there – even being hostesses at the event, where we help guests that have any questions regarding itinerary and venue layout,” Henert said. They are also adept at providing and coordinating preferred vendors for photography, music, catering, linens, printing, tux and reception rentals as well as flowers. They even provide wall and ceiling drapery. The business also can coordinate printed items, from save the date and invitations to place cards and vinyl printing. Henert recommends starting the process 4 to 6 months in advance so that plans are set 2 to 3 weeks before the

A sign and event photo on display at the business. event, leaving time for additional preparations. “The most rewarding part is putting everything together and seeing the look on our clients’ faces when they see the finished product for the first time,” Henert said. “It makes all the hard work worth it.”

New era at Brandywine New owners breathe new life into longtime local venue

magine the quiet elegance of a Waldorf Astoria chandelier casting a soft glow overhead at your wedding reception. Or, perhaps, a rustic wagon wheel chandelier that once welcomed guests to the legendary Pump Room restaurant in Chicago. Now, imagine both at your wedding reception at the Brandywine Banquet and Events Center in Dixon. Steeped in history, the venue is undergoing a renaissance with new owners, Tim Kendrick and Matt Prescott, who purchased the building earlier this year. Originally built by local contractor Arlyn Lawrence and opened in 1976, the Brandywine has been a premier reception setting for thousands of local events. Kendrick and Prescott are well into renovations to restore both the decor and functionality of the venue. “The first thing I said when I walked in was ‘these walls have got to go!’” shared Kendrick. “We immediately agreed to open up the space.”

Great care has been taken to retain the original European rustic design of the building. Massive wooden beams, salvaged from local mills and an old piano manufacNEW ERA continued on 124 turer, are a focal point throughout the building.

Since then, walls have been removed to open up the main floor ballroom and windows added to bring in light. Fresh paint revived the large room and the extensive bar was refurbished and integrated into the banquet room. Great care has been taken to retain the original European rustic design of the building. Massive wooden beams, salvaged from local mills and an old piano manufacturer, are a focal point throughout the building. Another antique accent is the front entrance door, recovered from the old Lee County courhouse. “The Brandywine has a lot of great stories,” said Chuck Miller, who along with his wife, Andrea, have been the operations managers for more than 2 decades. “The history runs deep,” said Melissa Ryan-Bergston, director of marketing. “The Brandywine is built from a lot of landmarks in this area.” The venue holds unexpected treasures from the past in each of four reception rooms that can host everything from an intimate gathering of 20 to larger affairs up to 450. New is the Bride’s Room. Once a smaller meeting room on the main floor, an

Brandywine Banquet and Events Center Address: 441 state Route 2, Dixon Phone: 815-284-8484 Online: brandywinedixon.com and Facebook entire wall of mirrors and abundant windows provide the perfect spot for brides and their attendants to prepare for the big event away from guests and staff. The room can also function as an intimate reception space for 20 to 40 people. The Brick Room, so named for cobblestone pavers reclaimed from streets in Sterling, is a second main floor setting that can seat up to 80 guests. An antique corner fireplace adds charm and character to the space. The room can also function as a place for the groom and groomsmen to prepare for the wedding and relax. The first-floor ballroom has enjoyed the most impressive changes since the new owners took over. The spacious room with an impressive bar can host up to 200 people with plenty of room for a dance floor. It is also the main space for Sunday brunches. The second floor grand ballroom, graced with the Waldorf Astoria and Pump House chandeliers, can seat up to 450 guests. It also features a separate bar service room

with a center fireplace and cocktail seating. Again, the banquet space also accommodates a large dance floor. As for menu selections, just about anything goes. Clients have free range when it comes to options and won’t find just the typical buffet and plated dinner selections. “Every meal can be completely customized. We say ‘yes’ and then figure out how to get it done,” said coordinator Laura Hoyle with a laugh. “We basically can do anything they want.” Beyond buffet and sit-down dinners, Hoyle has seen a trend towards food stations that can offer everything from seafood and pasta stations to just about any ethnic cuisine requested. One bride even requested a gluten-free meal for 300 guests. The staff is also adept at assisting with wedding planning and can recommend everything from flowers to DJs through their preferred vendors. Reservations are needed well in advance. “We have already booked one reservation for 2020,” shared Ryan-Bergston. “A year is good, but based on availability, there are still some dates open.” Miller estimates that he has been involved in more than 1,000 events during his tenure. “To be a part of their life,” he said. “That’s really neat.”

Family key at Kegger’s Venue gives local business owners more space for weddings, events

K

BY JESSIE KERN For I Do

egger’s Tap House opened in Sterling recently and its owners want people to know it’s more than just

a bar. Heath and Beth Warner, who also own Warner’s MVP Lounge, 3 E. Third St., and The Boulevard Pub and Grill, 2501 Ave. E, wanted their newest business, at 13464 Galt Road, to offer an environment that all ages could enjoy. “We could do everything that we wanted to do here,” Heath said. “We could have weddings, we could have banquets, we could have graduation parties, we could have benefits for fundraisers, we could have school functions.” The name Kegger’s Tap House is a nod to the bar’s 36 taps and 24 different bottled beers, as well as the whiskey barrel theme. Dan Winstead, owner of the neighboring Winstead Pallet Salvage, helped the Warners with design ideas and renovations. “I can’t take all the credit,” Heath said. Winstead helped transform real whiskey barrels from Wisconsin into tables. “He’s really good with designing and making things like that, so we ordered the table tops and he built the bottoms,” Heath said. “He made the tables himself up at his shop and they turned out wonderful.” Heath said they considered naming the place “The Barrel House,” but ultimately decided against it because there are so many across the country. He said Kegger’s is simple, catchy, and easy for people to remember. Kegger’s Tap House has the Tap Room, Barrel Room, a banquet room, and a outdoor space called The Beer Garden. “The Barrel Room is what we consider our high-end restaurant,” Heath said. “We serve really, really good food.” He said there is a “really great atmosphere” and it’s “family friendly.” The space also features TVs so customers won’t miss a minute of the big game. Beth said they will also be building a tiki bar for the Beer Garden. “It’s a destination,” she said of the revamped bar that previously housed The Tin Roof Tavern and Cochran’s Pub before that. “You can be outside at the tiki bar, you could be at the bar, you can be in here golfing, you could have a benefit, and you can have the dining room. I mean there’s so many different things going and it’s for all ages.”

Keggers has two dining rooms, a patio and a banquet hall that can be rented for special occasions. Heath said he always felt the need for another restaurant to serve steaks and seafood, because the town didn’t really have that. “We want to be known for the best steaks in town, really good seafood, good wings, good burgers, great cold beer on tap,” he said. The tap system is the same one used at The Boulevard, and Heath said it’s the best tap system available. Beth said the size of the location is what drew them to open another bar. The Boulevard is not large enough to host bigger groups. “Sometimes people want to have private parties and stuff,” she said. “They love the food, but ... we just don’t have the space [at The Boulevard],” she said. She said they really wanted to change the atmosphere of the business and make it more family friendly. “That’s why we changed it,” Beth said. “We added a hood in the back so we could have a grill, so it’s a full-fledged kitchen now where it wasn’t before.” Along with the addition of more high-end food, Kegger’s Tap House also has slot machines and a golf and hunting simulator. There are multiple TVs in both the Tap and Barrel rooms for people to watch sports on and the Barrel Room also has a smaller version of the main bar built inside. “We could have just turned key and opened it when we got it in March but we’re like, ‘No,’ you know, we wanted to add the floor, we added the drywall, we built that whole new bar that wasn’t there, the bathrooms weren’t there,” Beth said. She said previously the Barrel Room had metal walls with a concrete floor so they wanted to make the atmosphere more comfortable and welcoming. General manager Serenia Law said people can reach out to

Kegger’s Tap House Address: 13464 Galt Road, Sterling Phone: 815-716-8915 Online: Facebook her about renting the space out. She said people can rent any of the rooms, or the entire building if they’d like. Law said it’s been amazing to see the overall transformation of the building. Heath said they really pushed for the space to be unique in what it offers and can do for customers – including providing space for weddings and other parties. “We want to be different; you don’t want everything the same,” Beth said.

Help from Holly Family, schedule keep graphic designer busy

Photos by Michael Krabbenhoeft for I Do

Holly Davis is the new venue coordinator and graphic designer at Deer Valley Country Club in Deer Valley.

F

BY PHILLIP HARTMAN For I Do

or Holly Davis, there aren’t many breaks between home and work. She’s constantly on the go as Deer Valley Country Club’s venue coordinator and graphic designer. Davis started in February, and helps schedule weddings, reunions, proms, and other events while working with future brides and grooms on getting their big day perfect with invitations and more. When Davis goes back home to Milledgeville, she’s got a new son, Koster, born June 19, and daughter, Breanna, 3, to keep her and husband, Clint, on the go. “I love time with family. My daughter loves the zoo,” Davis, 35, said.

Examples of some of the wedding invitations that Davis has created are shown.

29

www.saukvalley.com The Deer Valley Country Club offers a large space for weddings in Deer Grove.

Davis, a Milledgeville High School graduate, said she taught herself how to do graphic design. She also honed her celebration planning skills by starting wedding design at SBM in Sterling, where she worked from 2012 to 2017. “I designed more than 125 invitation sets my first year at SBM, both invitations and envelopes,” Davis said. Once she started at Deer Valley, Davis found the facility doesn’t have a slow season either. Davis also can create custom invitations for wedding parties, with no geographic limits. Most of the clients come from the Sauk Valley, with some from Princeton and Mendota. She also helps with decorations for receptions. Davis said many brides are going with rustic themes, using wood crates, burlap, lace and other materials. “I’ve got one in a couple of weeks

Deer Valley Banquets Address: 3298 Hoover Road, Deer Grove Phone: 815-438-4653, ext. 13 Email: deervalleybanquets@yahoo.com Online: deervalleybanquets.com and Facebook going all modern. One bride did a bookthemed wedding with library cards as save the date items,” Davis said. Often, engaged couples will bring their own materials or go to decorators, such as Selmi’s or Behrz Bloomz in Rock Falls. Davis’ work on invitations can be done with a quick turnaround. She has a number of printers and paper cutters in her office, and can create seating charts as easily as she can make signs. “They tell me what they like and don’t like, and I give them a sample. It can be

done in 1 to 3 business days,” Davis said. Wedding ceremonies also can be held at Deer Valley, as well as receptions. About 25 percent of weddings at the club involve ceremonies as well as receptions. The facility can seat up to 450 people, and isn’t just for weddings. “We also do reunions, fundraisers, proms, business meetings, birthday events, graduations, and anniversary parties,” Davis said. Planning ahead is key for wedding and other reservations. Davis showed copies of an invitation she’s already done for Christmas. “You want to book at least 6 months out, and get invites in the mail 8 weeks before the wedding,” Davis said. She can do invitations for people who aren’t having functions at Deer Valley. One bride who contacted Davis is from Haywood, Wisconsin.

Before the big date: A wedding checklist 9 months before

o Choose your wedding date. If you plan to be married in a church or temple, clear the date and time with the clergy. o Announce your engagement in local newspapers. o Set your budget. Take time for a heart-to-heart talk with your fiancé about the budget and style of your wedding, reception and wedding-related parties, and who pays for what. Consider hiring a bridal consultant. If your budget won’t allow that, enlist relatives and close friends to help – especially in areas where you feel you need support. o Compose your guest list. Let out-of-town guests know your wedding is in the works so they can make travel plans. o Reserve the reception site. o Choose wedding attendants. o Select your wedding gown, shoes and accessories. o Decide on bridesmaids’ dresses. o Determine the theme or mood you’d like to establish with the food, table settings, flowers and entertainment at your reception. o Interview caterers, musicians, florists, photographers, videographers and cake makers. Get written estimates of their costs. Keep track of your discussions and their bids in a notebook or with wedding-planning software.

6 months before

o Choose your caterer, musicians and florist. Remember to get written contracts. o Book your photographer and videographer. o Select your baker and order the cake. o Decide on your color scheme. o Shop for wedding rings with your fiancé. o Decide on your honeymoon destination. Work with a travel agent to book your travel and accommodations. o Select your wedding invitations. Don’t forget to purchase personal stationery for your thank-you notes.

4 months before

o Register for gifts at one or more bridal-gift registries. o Help both mothers to coordinate and shop for their weddingday attire. o Select music for the ceremony and reception.

o Choose readings for your wedding and write your wedding vows. o Plan a rehearsal dinner for members of your wedding party, your family and out-of-town guests. Reserve the location. o Arrange hotel accommodations for members of the wedding party who live out of town. Reserve a block of rooms for other out-of-town guests, and let them know the rooms are available. Remember to ask for any group discounts or special packages. o Reserve your wedding-day transportation and any other wedding-day rental needs. o Make appointments for gown fittings. o Check the requirements for a marriage license. o Make sure contracts and arrangements are complete with all of your service providers.

3 months before

o Prepare directions, including simply drawn maps, if necessary, to help guide guests to the wedding and reception, and to hotels. For guests who will travel a long distance, consider assembling an information package on fun things to do and see in your area. o Begin addressing invitations and announcements. Select a special stamp at the post office. Invitations should go in the mail 6 to 8 weeks before your big day. o Give the caterer or other food suppliers a close idea of the number of guests you expect. o Make sure all reservations are in place for honeymoon travel. o Check with bridesmaids to make sure they have their gowns and are getting them adjusted. o Shop for gifts for your bridesmaids. Offer to help your fiancé select gifts for his attendants. o Select your “going away” outfit and special items for your trousseau. o Make a date with your photographer for formal portraits. o Make an appointment to have your hair done just before your portrait session and again the day or so before your wedding. Consider including your bridesmaids in a “day of beauty” before your wedding, with manicures, hair styling, massages and makeup sessions.

2 months before

o Mail out your wedding invitations and announcements.

o Have wedding portraits taken. o Send bridal portrait and wedding announcement to newspapers for publication. o Finalize the music that will be played during your wedding ceremony. o Meet with musicians who will provide entertainment during your reception and orchestrate precisely what you want and when you want it played. o Don’t be shy to voice your preferences, down to the volume, favorite songs you’d like to hear, or even songs you don’t want played. o Plan your rehearsal dinner and a brunch or fun activity for out-of-town guests to enjoy on the day following your wedding. o Buy special accessories for your wedding-day attire. o Plan a luncheon for your bridesmaids. o Make appointments for a hairdresser, makeup artist and manicurist. o Finalize honeymoon plans. If you’re traveling overseas, check again that your passports are current and that you have any necessary visas. o Gather necessary birth or baptismal certificates you might need for your wedding license.

1 month before

o Get your wedding license. o Have a final fitting of your gown and make sure your attendants have theirs. o Check that your menu selections and service plans are locked in place with the caterer. o Purchase a special book to keep track of wedding gifts as they arrive. o Keep writing those thank-you notes on a daily basis! o If you plan a formal dinner for your reception, it’s time to draw up a seating plan and make up place cards. o Check with your florist to confirm dates and times of flower deliveries. o Review your wedding-day transportation plans and make sure drivers are clear about addresses, times and number of passengers. o Make name or address changes official on documents, including driver’s license, Social Security forms and financial accounts. Fill out change-ofaddress forms at the post office. o Meet with your photographer to specify the formal shots you

want taken of the bridal party, as well as specific, candid shots you’d like taken during the reception. o Review the video plans with your videographer.

2 weeks before

o Keep writing those thank-you notes for wedding gifts! o Pick up your wedding rings. Make sure any special engraving appears precisely as you wished. o Begin packing for your honeymoon. 1 week before your wedding o Make final checks with all your vendors: officiant, musicians, florist, photographer, videographer, limousine or other transportation provider, caterers and baker. o Ask a friend or family member to arrange for wedding gifts that may be brought to your reception to be delivered to your home or another safe spot. o Wrap gifts for bridal attendants and have them ready for the rehearsal dinner. o Purchase travelers’ checks and reconfirm honeymoon travel and hotel plans. o See that checks are written and ready to be handed out to vendors at the agreed-upon time. o Inform your caterer of the final number of guests. Confirm that out-of-town guests are set with hotel accommodations, transportation and wedding-day directions.

The day before

o Take time to relax and enjoy a massage, manicure and pedicure. o Traditionally, this is the day for your rehearsal ceremony and rehearsal dinner. Have fun! o Turn in early for a good night’s sleep.

Wedding day

o Allow plenty of time for dressing, makeup and hair styling. o If you plan on photography before the ceremony, allow ample time so you’re not rushed. o Relax, and remember: This is your special day, the result of all your careful planning. Now it’s time to enjoy. Take a deep breath. Refuse to let any glitch get to you. Savor every moment of this sacred day. Let your joy and happiness shine through.

Groom’s Checklist BY ROBERT MORTIZ The Knot

So, you finally got up the nerve to pop the big one. Now it’s time to start doing some heavy wedding lifting. Here’s a list of your most essential to-dos.

12 months before

3 months before

n Figure out where you’re going to have your ceremony and reception. The best spots fill up fast, especially for summer and fall, so decide your wedding size and start looking. n Organize your guys. After you ask your best man to do the honors, make up your groomsman list. For crowd control, you’ll want at least one usher per 50 guests. n Get what you want. Crazy as it seems, people start buying you gifts immediately, and registering may be the only way to keep your friends’ and relatives’ questionable tastes in check.

n Get ready for the freeloaders. Your out-of-town guests need a place to stay, so unless you’ve got a couple dozen spare bedrooms, decide on a hotel and reserve a block of rooms. Let them know this in your invitations. n By this time, the guest list should be finalized – i.e., it has the bride, groom and parents’ approval. Time to send out the invitations. n Get dressed. So what will it be? Tails and top hat or traditional Scottish kilt? Decide and buy (or rent), then pick out your groomsmen’s getups. n Give a jeweler your finger to be measured. Let your fiancée do the same, and then order your wedding rings. Decide on inscriptions. n If you’re going to tie the knot, you may have to get your blood tested. It’s the law in some states.

9 months before n Meet and greet suitable officiants. Priest, rabbi, justice of the peace, officially sanctioned Elvis impersonator – the choice is yours. n Book the talent. It’ll probably fall to you to choose the band or disc jockey. Be sure to get references and hear music beforehand – and run it by your bride before you sign on the dotted line. n Start drawing up your guest list. This is something you’ll probably want to get your parents in on, too.

6 months before n Plan your honeymoon. If you’re leaving the country, now would be a good time to check or find your passport – or get them if you and your girl don’t have ’em – and see what kind of shots or visas you might need. n Who’s driving? Arrange for transportation to the ceremony and reception. Think limousine or horse and buggy. While you’re at it, figure out where you’re going after the reception – airport? hotel? – and make plans for getting there. FYI, tradition dictates that your best man drives you.

6 to 8 weeks before

n Have a good time, but don’t do something stupid. It’s your bachelor party and last chance to go crazy without the ball and chain legally attached.
