By Susan Lawler October was a month of goodbyes, to an old friend and a young friend. A friend we will never see again and to a friend we look forward to returning to LCCOA. Lee County has so many wonderful people and among them are so many outstanding youths. I had an opportunity to meet just one of those outstanding individuals this past summer. As you all know, we have our annual Luau, which takes truly a village of people to turn out such a successful and fun-filled event. Since I am not tech savvy I was faced with several technical issues that day. Kristin Carlson, one of our Board members who’s also on the committee for the Luau, suggested asking her son, Connor for assistance.

What a wonderful young man! He spent several hours working on our DVD, mic and speaker system, with a smile on his face; “I am sure he was thinking why these women just didn’t get it; it’s not that difficult.”

Little did I know that he was giving up his last precious summer fun with his friends before he heads back to college. I know he did this for his mother, but he did touch my heart. Most young people do not want to spend their afternoon at a Senior Center. Connor has now left for college to pursue a degree in aviation. In a few short years we can look up in the sky and possibly see Connor flying by; make sure you give him a wave. Thank you, Connor for all your help and being a friend to the Center.

Where did this year go? This time of year is my absolute favorite! The girls and I generally put our tree up over Veteran’s Day weekend because we can’t wait to fill our home with the spirit of Christmas.

I know some probably think that’s way too early, so we won’t start putting our decorations up at the center until after Thanksgiving. For me, the holidays are about spending time with your loved ones but also giving back. We have numerous events planned where you’ll be able to join us in giving back as well.

Transportation will host the

Adopt-A-Rider program which is in its fifth year! By donating to Adopta-Rider, you’re helping little ones get to school, seniors get to needed doctors’ appointments, and parents get to employment. At times we have members of our community that are unable to pay their bus fare. By having the adopt-a-rider program we can provide the fare for them! Sometimes our help, means a parent can get their first paycheck and get back on their feet. I feel that is amazing and I’m extremely proud of this program and so very grateful for the support of our community throughout the years!

As I write this, it’s the beginning

Now on a sadder note: We have lost one of our old friends, Richard Watkins. Richard was a constant companion to our friends in the computer lab. You could see Richard there every day. He had his favorite spot. As I look over at the lab each day, I am saddened not to see that interesting, highly intelligent man with a cowboy hat on his head. All of us here at LCCOA will miss Richard. He always had a smile on his face, a story to share, a joke or two, and of course some interesting facts regarding the past and the present and how he connected the two. Richard always made a point to stop and see me and compliment me on what I was wearing or my work at the center.

As the doors open in the morning I keep looking to see him come in and share, sometimes a little avant-garde tidbit, but then again that was Richard. One day I was wearing a geometric blouse with very vibrant colors and Richard looked up and said, “Renata Bernal?” I looked at him and said “yes it is.” He was surprised that I knew

the artist; again, that was Richard.

Many of you knew Richard as the man with the miniature horses in his front yard. As I pass his house each morning I miss seeing those beautiful horses. They were Richard’s companions and friends; he spoke of them so lovingly; you knew he truly cared about them. He wanted them to roam free, as free as Richard. Richard was truly a free spirit; living in the past with a hint of the present. He loved technology and what the future would bring in new advances in the field of computers; but there was that part of Richard that longed for the past.

My heart saddens to know that Richard had no family and no one to claim his remains. If only the Center had funds set aside for just these times; when we can truly say goodbye to an old friend. LCCOA – a friend that Richard called his home and his family.

Goodbye! Auf Wiedersehen, old friend!

Monday it was 80 degrees and now it’s Friday and it’s snowing. Illinois weather is strange, and it can also be bitterly cold in the winter.

Due to that, we want to make sure community members stay warm.

On Wednesday, Nov. 28, riders can ride with us for free if they donate a new pair of gloves, hat, or coat.

Donations can be given directly to our drivers. Donations will be split, and half will be taken to Sterling Schools and the other half will be kept on our buses. We transport a lot of little ones and sometimes the drivers notice they may not have gloves or hat. This will be a great opportunity to ensure our littlest of riders stay warm!

If you enjoy holiday shopping, we would love if you would pick up an extra gift. We will once again this year have a Christmas tree for the Salvation Army here at the center.

Gift tags can be taken from the tree which will list a child’s age, clothing size, and what they like. Purchased

gifts can be brought back to the center and placed under the tree. I will then take all the donations to the Salvation Army, so they can be delivered before Christmas!

If you enjoy decorating, we hope you’ll donate your time! We are looking for volunteers to help us deck the halls of the center. We will begin decorating the week after Thanksgiving. We will put a tree up in our dinning room as well as our big room and then a few decorations throughout the building. If you’re interested in helping, please let myself or Beth know.

We will be focusing on giving back this month and then next month, we have a lot of fun things planned for you! Be sure to read next month’s Echo and check our bulletin board here at the center.

You may know our parents, Leo and Joan Eccles and Dave and Anne Lahey. It’s kind of funny that I am still referred to as “the little Lahey girl.” I haven’t been considered a “girl” in a while, but I’ll take it!

We are so blessed to have our mothers and my four siblings and their families in this area. We enjoy getting together often and have a lot of fun. If you have ever attended the St. Patrick’s Day parade in Dixon, you have seen me dressed in green parading through the streets.

I have been working in events for most of my adult life and am

so excited to join the Post House Ballroom team! There are big shoes to fill, as Cathy has devoted many years to the Ballroom and has done an excellent job. With her expert guidance, I will be up and running soon. The Ballroom has had many bookings this past year and will be even busier next year. It’s truly one of Sauk Valley’s gems! The Post House Ballroom is an amazing place to hold your special events, and I look forward to being a part of it all.

I want to thank everyone at LCCOA for welcoming me with open arms.

Three girls and a wonderful family who obviously have great taste in wedding venues! Decisions about Medicare coverage Fall Open Enrollment is a good time to review your options, make changes Dear Marci, With Fall Open Enrollment coming up, I am thinking about changing my Medicare coverage. I might keep Original Medicare and enroll in a new Part D prescription drug plan, or I might enroll in a Medicare Advantage Plan with prescription drug coverage. What factors should I consider when I am looking at different plans?

– Eva, Topeka, Kansas Dear Eva, Fall Open Enrollment, which runs from Oct. 15 through Dec. 7, is the right time to review your current coverage, compare it with other options, and possibly make changes. The last change you make during Fall Open Enrollment will take effect on January 1, 2019.

To avoid enrollment problems, it is best to call 1-800-MEDICARE when making changes to your health and drug coverage.

Here are some questions to ask about any Medicare Advantage Plan that you are considering enrolling in: How much are the premium, deductible, and coinsurance/ copay amounts?

What is the annual maximum out-of-pocket cost for the plan?

This amount might be high, but can help protect you if you have expensive health care costs.

What service area does this plan cover?

Are my doctors and hospitals in the plan’s network?

What are the rules I have to follow t access health care services and my drugs?

Does the plan cover additional health care benefits that are not covered by Original Medicare?

How will this plan affect any additional coverage I may have?

Ask yourself these questions before choosing a Part D prescription drug plan or a Medicare Advantage Plan with prescription drug coverage: Does the plan cover all the medications I take?

Does the plan have restrictions on my drugs (like prior authorization, step therapy or quantity limits)?

Prior authorization means that you must get approval from your Part D plan before the plan will pay for the drug Step therapy means that your

plan requires you to try a cheaper version of the drug before it will cover a more expensive one.

Quantity limits restrict the quantity of a drug you can get per prescription fill, such as 30 pills of Drug X per month.

How much will I pay for monthly premiums and the annual deductible?

How much will I pay at the pharmacy (copay/coinsurance) for each drug I take?

Is my pharmacy in the plan’s preferred network?

Can I fill my prescriptions by mail order?

If I have retiree coverage, will the Medicare drug plan work with this coverage?

For both Medicare Advantage Plans and Part D prescription drug plans, you may also want to consider a plan’s star rating. Star ratings are quality ratings that provide a measure of a plan’s performance. Medicare scores plans in several categories, including quality of care and customer service.

Ratings range from one to five stars, with five being the highest.

Keep in mind that a plan’s star rating is only one factor to review

when comparing plans in your area. Even though a plan has a high star rating, it may not be right for you. It is important to see whether the plan covers the health services and drugs you need and works with the pharmacies you use before considering its star rating. Also, note that the star ratings in the Medicare & You handbook are not necessarily the most recent. For the most up-to-date, comprehensive star ratings, you should call 1-800-MEDICARE or use the online Plan Finder tool at www.medicare.gov.

You may also find it helpful to use Medicare’s Plan Finder tool, which gives you a list of Medicare Advantage and Part D plans, the drugs they cover, and their estimated costs for the year. You can access Plan Finder by going online at www.medicare.gov or calling 1-800-MEDICARE. – Marci Marci’s Medicare Answers is a service of the Medicare Rights Center, the nation’s largest independent source of information and assistance for people with Medicare.

Greetings from The Emporium Thrift Center. All proceeds support the Whiteside County Senior Center.

As of Nov. 1, we will be featuring Thanksgiving and Christmas decorations.

If you have shopped with us before, you know that we have a store full of Christmas starting in November.

The list goes like this: wreaths, table decorations, lights, cards, tree ornaments, table linens, pillows, tree skirts and about anything you need to celebrate Christmas.

We are also a good place to do some Christmas shopping for your gift list. We have items that are collectible such as Willow Tree, Disney, Precious Moments, Snow Babies and more.

Along with all the winter clothing (coats, hats, scarfs, sweatshirts, gloves, etc.) we have the holiday clothing too. “Sparkly” tops, dresses, shoes and jewelry. And don’t forget the Mens Department, growing every week and all very reasonably priced to fit any budget.

Stop in often as merchandise is put out daily.

On Nov. 1, we will be auctioning off an all-white king-size quilt (90x112) which was hand quilted by Mennonite Ladies. Come in and place your bid. The auction will last for 2 weeks.

Trick or treat!

Hope your Halloween was safe, scary, and fun.

For a fun treat, come out to Plum Hollow Lanes in Dixon any Tuesday or Thursday morning and bowl with the seniors. We start at 9 a.m.

Get your two bits ready; it’s time for Quarter Madness The Post House Ballroom, 100 W. Second St., will host a Quarter Madness on Nov. 18.

Doors open at 12:30 p.m. and the auction beings at 1:30 p.m.

Quarter Madness is a hybrid of a raffle and an auction. People “bid” to win new products from local businesses and home business vendors. Items are “auctioned off” for one to four quarters. There will be 16 vendors at the event.

Bidding paddles are $5 each, two for $8, or three for $10.

There also will be a 50-50 raffle – $1 a ticket or six for $5 – Girl Scouts will sell snacks, and drinks will be sold at the bar.

The fundraiser benefits Lee County Council on Aging.

Take a bus trip to see ‘Scrooge The Comedy’ You can still reserve a seat for a bus trip to see “Scrooge the Comedy” on Dec. 7 at White Pines Playhouse in Mount Morris. The cost is $41 per person, which includes dinner, the play, and gratuities.

Outreach at LCCOA As we enter into November we are in the heat of the Open Enrollment period for your Medicare prescription drug plan. Please be patient with us as we are diligently working to get to each and every one of you who have already submitted your lists.

We will continue to take lists through the month so please be sure to submit all requested information, if you are wanting to check your plan this year. As a reminder, we do them first come first serve from the date that we receive all of your information.

Once we have completed your comparison we contact you with results and schedule an appointment, if needed, at that time. We do not schedule appointments any sooner than this. Please remember repeatedly calling us will not expedite your results so we ask that you please be courteous to others as we will get to everyone. Repeat calls will only slow us down.

It’s here! The Annual Enrollment Period for Medicare Part-D season ends Dec 7. If you are wanting to compare to see if there is a cheaper drug plan for you in 2019, make your call soon! Appointments are limited. In order to compare plans at your appointment, please bring your Medicare (red, white, and blue) card and a detailed list of the current medications that you are taking. If you need to reschedule your appointment, we appreciate a 24 hr. notice. Please note that if you receive a Low Income Subsidy (Extra Help) for help with your medication costs, you do not need to adhere to the Oct. 15-Dec. 7 dates for comparing drug plans. Benefits Access Application (License Plate Discount/Ride Free Transit Card) Do you need to complete your License Plate Discount/Ride Free Transit Card application? We can help with this application on walk-in Mondays from 9 a.m.- 1 p..m. Once you are approved for the application, your eligibility is good for two years. Please bring in proof of your 2017 yearly income (income taxes, 1099 forms, W-2’s, etc.), driver’s license or state ID, social security card (for yourself and your spouse if you are married), and proof of disability, if applicable.

Getting help in Whiteside County The Whiteside County Senior Center (WCSC) Aging and Disabled resource staff help with a variety of programs for older adults and persons with disabilities. Our walk-in day is on Mondays from 9 a.m.-1 p.m. For Medicare counseling or

more detailed assistance, please call us in advance to set up an appointment. Our phone number 815-622-9230 Ext. 194. For our clients in Erie, Fulton, Morrison, and Prophetstown, we will meet with you by appointment on our site days-just call us in advance. Help available for those having trouble hearing on the cell phone

Illinois Telecommunications Access Corp. (ITAC) has added a program to help those with cellular service that are having trouble hearing on the phone.

The program still provides free amplified telephones and captioning telephones to Illinois residents who are hard of hearing.

Applicants must be certified as hard of hearing by a doctor, nurse practitioner, or audiologist; live in Illinois; and have a service that remits to the program.

Lee County Council on Aging (LCCOA) and Whiteside County Senior Center (WCSC) are selection centers for ITAC. Walk-ins are welcomed on Mondays 9 a.m.-1 p.m. at the WCSC. Potential applicants can call the WCSC 815-622-9230 Ext. 194 or LCCOA 815-288-9236 in advance to set up an appointment to see about qualifying for this wonderful program.

Cell phones must be Bluetooth capable. Applicants who wish to apply for this program should bring in their cell phone. Please bring a phone bill with all the pages for landline service or cellular service (prepaid cell users that don’t receive a phone bill must bring the cell phone) and proof of address (driver’s license, state ID, or a bill with the applicant’s name and address on it).

Dixon Golden Kiwanis looking for new members The Dixon Golden Kiwanis meets every Tuesday at 9 a.m. at Lee County Council on Aging, 100 W. Second St., Dixon. All visitors are welcome at the meetings. There are guest speakers, fresh coffee and always friendly conversations.

At recent meetings, speakers

shared information about the Dixon Area Emergency Needs Fund, pictures of a trip to Acadia National Park in Maine and Mayor Li Arellano presented information about various happenings in Dixon. Every week there is a new presentation.

Meetings are also used to plan activities to help children in the area, which is the priority of the organization. Fund raising activities are used to support Tales for Tots, Shining Star, CASA, Buddy Bags and Al Morrison Baseball League to name a few.

The Golden Kiwanis would also like to take this time to thank Ace Hardware (Richard Kelly), County Market (Juli Duckworth), ShopKo (Lukas Hackman) and Walgreens (Brandon Rogers) for their support.

Greyhound Connect expands service offering in Illinois Lee-Ogle Transportation System to administer the new route along the I-39 Corridor DIXON – Greyhound Connect, currently an option for travelers looking at points of interest between Chicago and Davenport, Iowa, along the I-88 corridor, is adding another route of interest to local riders.

The plan is that as early as this summer Greyhound Connect will begin a new daily round trip route between Chicago and Danville, Illinois, with stops in Rockford, Rochelle, LaSalle-Peru, Bloomington-Normal and Champaign.

This new route, explains Greg Gates, Director of the Lee-Ogle Transportation System (LOTS), is supported through InterCity Bus Funding through the Illinois Department of Transportation.

LOTS will serve as the administrative agent for the route.

“We’re excited about this new Greyhound Connect service route which will make one round trip every day, all year long,” explains Gates. “It was proposed in the most recent round of request for InterCity Bus funding.”

According to Gates, there is no official start date for the new Greyhound route along I-90, I-39 and I-74.

“There is some planning time including the purchase of additional buses for the route along

with marketing efforts that will take place prior to the start date, which we hope will be this summer.”

One of the marketing pieces that is in motion currently is the re-design of the Illinois Bus Network (www.illinoisbusnetwork.

com) which will give people the ability to find resources when planning a trip.

People here in Lee and Ogle counties will be able to make a connection with the new route via the existing Greyhound service that is run along the I-88

corridor.

LOTS is a ticket agent for Greyhound Connect service at their transit facility – Reagan Transit Center – at 210 E. Progress Drive, south of I-88 and just off of state Route 26.
