enerations of Sheaffers have walked the green, rolling hills and deep hollows of Windsweep Farm. They’ve lived off the milkfat of the land with their cattle. Specialty meats have been their livestock in trade. They’ve turned produce into profit. And they’ve done it naturally. The family farm located between Dixon and Sterling produces and sells specialty meats and other products, including milk-fed pork and chicken, lamb, eggs, seasonal produce, and

unpasteurized milk. The farm’s animals are raised in a self-sustaining environment. Their diet is vegetarian and their feed is homegrown and harvested onsite, supplemented only by the vitamins, minerals, and protein they need for a balanced diet. You’d be hard-pressed to find a hormone on the farm, and the only time antibiotics are used is when one of the animals is recovering from illness or injury. The livestock is raised humanely in a pasture. Continued on page 9

Leonard Sheaffer, 67, and his daughter, Renee Sheaffer-Koster, 31, work together on marketing Windsweep Farm. The fourth-generation family farm started with dairy cattle. Leonard’s grandfather, John Sheaffer, moved from Pennsylvania to the Sauk Valley in the early 1900s. Leonard’s father, Harold, started milking in 1946, and Leonard joined him in 1972. Renee has also followed in her father’s footsteps. She started milking Holstein cattle when she was 14, and later moved into brown Swiss. Leonard sold his herd in the 1990s, and Renee moved into specialty products, partnering with her father. The family now has about 100 head of brown Swiss and other cattle, including calves. “I have more cows than I need,” Renee said as one of the cows ambled toward her and her children – Colin Koster, 3, Landon Koster, 2, and Evelyn Koster, 3 months. When Renee was in college, she saw a documentary on milk-fed chicken, which inspired her to try the same idea with Berkshire hogs; she started feeding them extra milk from the farm and started selling the meat about 15 years ago. Farming runs in the family at Windsweep Farm, just ask 3-year-old Colin Koster, who’s already lending a hand. With future generations already putting down roots on the family farm, it looks like Windsweep will keep on growing for years to come.

“We don’t do butchering. We have our meat done at the Carroll County Locker in Lanark. I do have some pork done at Lena because people want nitrate-free pork,” Renee said. Some of the extra milk is left unpasteurized for customers with dairy allergies who can drink unpasteurized milk, she said. Brown Swiss cattle are easy to keep, and produce milk high in butter fat and protein. Renee said the cream can be skimmed off of the milk. “My boys like to make butter with it,” she said. Windsweep products can be bought at the farm or online. Renee said she’s sold items to That Place on Palmyra, and has customers in the Quad Cities and Rockford. “We deliver twice a year to Grayslake. One person from California stopped and bought milk. I also sell at the Dixon Summer Farmers Market. People will buy quarters or halves. They can leave bottles of milk in the fridge and we’ll fill it up, or make appointments,” Renee said. Continued on page 13

Leonard’s wife, Anne, 68, and their other daughter, Emily Sheaffer, 36, also help with the business. “Renee was back out here a month after having Evelyn. It’s like it’s a passion,” Emily said. Leonard also has another passion, one that he’s turned into a side business. With money from selling cattle, he started buying compact tractors and parts from throughout the U.S. and overseas. “Some people in the South can buy a piece of ground for $1,000 and have a small tractor. I got into the parts end of it. I can find parts nobody else can,” Leonard said. Leonard’s traveled as far as New York and Norway to hunt down parts, and has built up business relationships with after-market dealers and salvage yards. The most he sold in one month was $18,000. “I’ve had parts made overseas. I had a guy in Hawaii who wanted to get a part, and I found it in Australia. There was one part missing from a tractor in Manchuria that I found in South Africa,” Leonard said. As for the farm’s future, it looks like it’s in good hands. Renee said Colin likes to pitch in with a pitchfork, and Landon even lends a little hand feeding the cattle. With future generations already putting down roots on the family farm, it looks like Windsweep Farm will keep on growing for years to come. s

Dixon Floral Co. has found a new home, and its new owner is excited about the opportunity to keep the 100-plus-year business growing STORY GAVIN T. JENSEN | PHOTOS ALEX PASCHAL FOR DIXON LIVING

New Dixon Floral Co. owner Melissa Gallentine (left) and designer Stacy Gallentine invite you to check out the new store 112 S. Peoria Ave.

F

or Melissa Gallentine, running a flower business isn’t a far cry from running a pizzeria. Both businesses specialize in custom orders – whether it’s picking buds for a bouquet or toppings on a pizza – and both peddle a product that can be picked up or delivered. And where would the former be without flour, or the latter without flowers? But whether it’s pizza or petals, one thing is exactly the same: Quality is what keeps people coming back. So when the owners of the century-plus-old flower shop asked Gallentine about taking over Dixon Floral Co., it didn’t take her long to make up her mind.

“Shelly Long, the previous owner, asked me one day in August if I would like to run the business,” Gallentine said. “I saw the opportunity ahead of me and said yes.” And it didn’t hurt that she had a spot to move the shop to, at 112 S. Peoria Ave., in a space she and her husband, Jim, owned next to the family business, Mama Cimono’s. She opened her new shop under the old name Oct. 1. The business had been located at 116 E. First St., but former owners Shelly and Dan Long, who owned the shop since 2016, wanted to sell the business in the brick building at the corner of East First Street and South Ottawa Avenue to make more room for another business in the building, Revive Boutique. Their hope was that Dixon MORE INFORMATION Floral wouldn’t close, and that Dixon Floral, 112 S. Remodeling is still underway, so decor is a work in progress. Gallentine, 41, and longtime Dixon Floral employee Stacy Blackbourn, 47, have been hard at work preparing the spot for the flower shop. “We really have the option to do whatever we want with this space,” Blackbourn said. The largest obstacle was installing the freezer to store the bulk of the

flowers. “Everything in here is new, from the counter to the display stands and the makeshift room for the freezer,” Gallentine said. “Although it’s smaller than the old place, it’s surprising and exciting to see how much we can fit.” Gallentine is prioritizing service over self. “The most important thing we can do is just give great service, and provide a high-quality product.” s

Come March 19, though, the two portals will merge into one log-in, and hospital services will be added to the app, providing all of a patient’s electronic records all in one spot. “It is a great way for patients to manage their health, their children’s health, or loved one’s health when needed,” Jessica Nance, KSB’s quality specialist, said in a news release. “Our goal is to increase patient access to their providers via this great communication tool and to allow patients to feel more in control of their health with 24/7 access to their health record.” Go to ksbhospital.com to sign up or learn more. Margaret Shaw is KSB’s patient portal specialist; she can troubleshoot or answer questions at 815 285-5424.

CGH Medical Center and KSB Hospital offer online portals that allow patients to access a host of health care services.

CGH app

Like its online My Access Clinics Portal service, CGH Medical Center’s new app allows the Sterling clinic’s patients to make appointments, check their lab results, get appointment reminders, view and refill prescriptions, and check out the backgrounds and ratings of staff physicians, nurse practitio-

It also comes with a CGH Main Clinic floor plan. Anyone can download the app and test some of its features, but unless they already have signed up for the clinic portals service, patients must take a photo ID to the nearest clinic location to get a verification code and instructions before they can make appointments and check test results. That’s to ensure sensitive medical information cannot be accessed by the wrong person. A CGH hospital portal also is available on the website, but for now, only clinic services can be accessed via the app. Those who already have a CGH My Access account simply need to download the CGH Clinics app from either the Apple App or Google Play store and log in their using existing log in and password. In the works for nearly a year, the app was used in-house by staff for months, to work out any bugs. It was launched for public use on Aug. 27. I

f there’s one thing the trio of stylists at Hydrate Salon and Spa agree on, it’s that they prefer to have a comb and clipper in hand rather than a keyboard under their fingertips. After years climbing the corporate ladder, owner Janice Swegle, 29, grew tired of living in Chicago, working 80 hours a week and missing her family back in Dixon. So she took a leap of faith, quit her job at in the Willis Tower and came home to pursue her dream of opening a spa. Continued on page 21

“I remember coming home from a business trip and calling my mom because I was exhausted from the built-up stress,” Swegle said. “I had no free time and I started to question what I was doing with my life.” For 6 months, she saved every last penny she could, then quit her job and moved back home. That was just over 2 years ago. Since then, she went back to school to learn the ins-and-outs of beauty, and opened Hydrate in July. “I almost missed my life’s calling. It was a scary jump, but I haven’t looked back since,” Swegle said. The salon’s clean lines and minimalist look – black accents, wood details, and plants, pulled together by crisp, white walls – are Swegle’s aesthetic, but her parents, Mark and Terri Swegle, 57 and 56, have helped with everything from the lawn care to installing the sign outside the front door. “Probably the biggest influence was my older sister, Jill (Swegle) Hayes. She wanted to open a spa and salon too, but life took her in another direction. “We tossed around names for weeks, and one day we were talking about the vision for the salon and said we wanted people to come here and feel rehydrated, and that was it,” Swegle said. With her desired look and vibe achieved, Swegle’s next step was to find stylists. She chose Bethany Wright, 29, and Kaila Langley 27, for their expertise, and for their shared stories. Wright is a certified Redken hair colorist who prides herself on continuing her education and understanding the science behind coloring and cutting techniques. The Dixon native didn’t start out as a stylist, though: Seven years ago, Wright was an EMT dispatcher in Naperville, but also wasn’t happy

Kaila Langley said she always dreamed of being a hair stylist and loves the positive impact she can have on people, “I have the power to make someone’s day, and make them feel and look beautiful.”

about the path she was on. “I was stuck in life so, I called my pastor. We prayed to see what the next step in life was for me, and God told me to school to study hair,” Wright said. “I’m much happier now, I have a better work-life balance and can spend time with my husband, Nathan Wright, and daughter, Gianna [who’s 3].”

hat does an antique chocolate mold, a vintage typewriter and a snakeshaped bracelet have in common? They can be found at Waterfront Gifts and Antiques – just so long as you don’t go looking at 212 W. First St. to find them. If you do, then you’ll need to turn around and look across the street, where the antique shop has grown into an antique mall. The shop is chock full of odds and ends looking for a new beginning in someone else’s home. From charming tchotchkes to eccentric eclectics – think brass umbrella holder shaped like a cowboy boot – the store lives up to its name; it’s full of gifts and antiques. But that’s not all that can be found there. People also can find a way to make some extra money. That’s where antique gurus Virginia Witzleb and Chris Morgan come in. The mother-and-daughter owners of Waterfront Gifts and Antiques started the business as a gift shop in 2005, but added antiques and eventually moved the shop to 212 W. First St. But an ever-increasing inventory and customers’ growing appetite for antiques sent the pair looking for bigger digs, and they didn’t have to go far to find them. They moved across the street, to the former Super Dollar Store. Their store used to be filled mostly with treasures from their own hunts – estate sales, antique picking, auctions, and private sales – but now they’ve made room for others looking for a place to peddle their antiques and attic finds. Witzleb and Morgan tried out the mall idea on a smaller scale at their previous location, renting extra space to dealers. It went over so well that they decided to move on to bigger and better things. “We only had a few dealers at our last location, but we were running out of space,” Morgan said. The move worked, and now they can fit 30 to
