Buffington said WIN has awarded $120,000 in grants and scholarships since its founding. The grant recipients included: • Peru Police Department, “Haven’s Heroes” therapy dog – $5,000 • Waltham Elementary School library

tractors during the Walnut 4th of July parade every year. Pat cherished his tractor collection. The collection consisted of 33 tractors that later were auctioned off.

The 2024-25 flu season was a high-severity season and saw 280 pediatric flu deaths, the highest number reported in a nonpandemic flu season since child deaths became notifiable in 2004.
By JUDY HARVEY jharvey@shawmedia.com Only 1 in 5 Illinois residents has received the flu vaccine, and only 5% have received the updated COVID-19 shot, according to the latest data from the Illinois Department of Public Health. Respiratory virus cases still are relatively low across the state, but they are slowly trending upward, according to the IDPH data. The number of residents who have received the flu shot through the end of November was at 21.9%, down 4% from this time a year ago and reflecting a consistent downward trend in people getting vaccinated over the past five years. The highest rate of people being immunized against the flu by the end of November was 30.2% in 2020, in the middle of the COVID-19 pandemic. The majority of those who have received the flu vaccine – 47.5% – are people age 65 and older. The next group with the highest rate is children ages 6 months to 4 years old, at 23.2%, followed by adults ages 50 to 64 at 21%. Nationally, 39% of adults to date have

SV donors raise 1.5 tons of food for the hungry By TOM COLLINS tcollins@shawmedia.com Sarah Kinkin heard there may be empty tables at Christmas in and around Spring Valley and issued an appeal for food. Donors and businesses in eastern Bureau County answered. In a big way. Under Kinkin’s direction, Grow Spring Valley mounted a drive to assist the Hall Township Food Pantry and the final tally astounded everyone. More than one and a half ton of
food arrived this week to meet the holiday demand. “I was hopeful, being that so many businesses agreed to participate so quickly,” said Kinkin, president of Grow Spring Valley. “I did not anticipate it being that much weight, though.” It didn’t hurt that Grow Spring Valley decided to make a contest of it and hand out points for collecting nonperishable items as well as for creatively decorating the donation bins. “Donations start pouring in,” said Nora Holbrook, a volunteer with
Grow Spring Valley. State Bank of Cherry won the award for the largest contribution with 598 pounds of donated food. The Judge’s Choice for Best Bin went to Casey’s General Store in Spring Valley. The overall winner, with the most votes, was the Village of Dalzell. Jan Martin, executive director of the food pantry, was astonished by the sheer volume of food that rolled in. She put on her thinking cap to recall a comparable food drive and the only one that came close was a “Fill
the Bus” contest between students of Hall High School and St. Bede Academy. Martin expressed her gratitude to the many people who donated, as the food will not only help meet holiday demand but also will ensure food assistance after Christmas donations taper off. “I wasn’t as worried about Christmas because we have a fantastic community that helps us sponsor food for the holidays,” Martin said.

Rising costs and upheaval
with federal aid have squeezed many families. Heading into Thanksgiving, Martin reported a personal record 487 households during the holidays – and she doesn’t see demand falling off. Kinkin said she’d like to see the holiday food drive become an annual event for Grow Spring Valley, a nonprofit founded five years ago to advance the city and help achieve objectives spelled out in its comprehensive plan.
The Board of Education is seeking everyone’s input in the search process. The Board requests that all community members complete an online survey provided by the IASB. The results will be tallied and used by the Board and Screening Team to develop a brochure to advertise the position. All survey responses and comments will remain anonymous. Colmone Championship postponed to Dec. 20 By KEVIN HIERONYMUS khieronymus@shawmedia.com Saturday’s final round of the Colmone Classic at Hall High School didn’t go as planned. The final three games of the day were not held, including the fifth- and third-place games and championship because Eureka and IVC were unable to make the trip north due to the weather. The championship showdown between rivals Hall and Mendota was postponed to Saturday, Dec. 20. However, the third- and fifth-place games will not be made up because of previously scheduled games for the teams. Hall athletic director Eric Bryant said the championship would be Dec. 20, perhaps with the Hall and Mendota JV teams also joining the hoopla. The final day also proved to be the end of a disappointing week for Princeton, St. Bede and Bureau Valley. Princeton, which has won two Colmone championships and played for another in the past four years, lost to Kewanee 67-48 in the seventh-place game, ending the week 1-3. “I think we let a couple [of games] slip away that we wish we had back, and I think today we didn’t give our best effort for whatever reason,” Tigers coach Jason Smith said. “Back to the drawing board on Monday.” He said if he could have put his finger on what went wrong Saturday, “we wouldn’t have got beat by 19.” St. Bede went into overtime, falling to Galva 64-63 in the ninth-place game. Like Smith, St. Bede coach Brian Hanson had takeaways from the week, even if they weren’t all positive. “The one thing we take away is, there’s only one way we can play. And we’ve got to be the first on the floor for loose balls,” he said. “We’ve got to be talking. We’ve got to have energy. We can’t walk out on the floor and expect good things to happen. Shaw Local News Network correspondent The Hall Red Devils wrapped up the Red Pool of the Colmone Classic with a 40-33 win over Putnam County on Tuesday, Dec. at Hall High School. Braden Curran hit a 3-pointer at the buzzer to give the Red Devils a 12-9 edge after a quarter of action. But that was as close as the Panthers would get the rest of the way as Noah Plym hit a long-range shot as did
Braden Bickerman did for Putnam County. Greyson Bickett scored on a steal and layup and then dished for an assist to Braden Curran, who also picked up a turnaround jumper as well as a putback for a 14-3 run to end the first half for a 23-12 halftime lead. “Braden was outstanding for us, especially early when we struggled a bit,” Hall coach Mike Filippini said. “Then we switched Luke Bryant and Greyson Bickett defensively, and they
did an outstanding job on the Putnam County guards all night.” Chace Sterling went coast to coast for the layup and then hit the hook shot to get Hall going in the third quarter. Plym hit another 3-pointer, and Braden Curran hit the pull-up jumper as the Red Devils’ lead grew to 32-12 on a 23-3 run. It wasn’t until the 1:26 mark when Jonathan Avila banked in a 3-pointer that the Panthers scored in the half. Brayden Zuniga also hit a shot
behind the arc for the Panthers. “We just didn’t play well tonight,” PC coach Jared Sale said. “We didn’t take care of the ball, kind of like against Henry, and when we make mistakes, the key is to learn from them, but I didn’t think we showed that tonight. Hall has a very good team over there and they showed it tonight.” Hall was led by Braden Curran with 19 points and Plym with nine points, while the Panthers were led by Traxton Mattingly with five points.
