IVCC tuition due July 30; payments, aid confirmation required

SHAW LOCAL NEWS NETWORK contact@shawmedia.com

Tuition for Illinois Valley Community College students is due Wednesday, July 30.

Students must pay in full, arrange a payment plan or notify the college they will be using financial aid to prevent being dropped from the roster and having to re-enroll, according to a news release.

A delay could cost students their preferred schedule if class seats are filled, forcing them to choose another class

section or wait longer to take the course. According to the release, most enrollees who miss the tuition deadline and are dropped are quickly reinstated when they respond to a notification. This year, students will be receiving a combination of mailings, emails, texts and phone calls before the deadline approaches.

IVCC Bursar Miguel Hermosillo urges students to take prompt action if they receive the notifications. Timing is also key in establishing payment plans, which, if done early, can result in smaller installments.

“Students appreciate that payment plans give them time to pay,” Hermosillo said in a news release.

Payment plans, payments, and class schedules can be arranged using the IVCC Self-Service portal.

Financial aid does not automatically kick in at enrollment, so students must verify with the College to ensure their financial aid is released for payments. The news release said, nearly half of the enrollees receive some sort of financial aid.

For information, call the IVCC cashier’s office at 815-224-0213.

IVCC nursing scholarship honors late alumna Kathy Dungan

SHAW LOCAL NEWS NETWORK contact@shawmedia.com

Prospective nursing students will have the opportunity to apply for a new scholarship after the friends and family of Kathy Dungan donated more than $20,000 to endow a scholarship in her memory.

Dungan of Mendota earned her associate degree in nursing in 1978 at Illinois Valley Community College before becoming a dedicated nurse at the University of Illinois at Chicago Hospital for more than 30 years, according to a news release.

Dungan lived in Elmhurst for 40 years but maintained a strong connection to her roots and to the college that helped launch her career in health care, the news release said. She died in December 2024.

According to the news release, the Kathy Dungan Memorial Nursing Scholarship is intended to honor Dungan, who made a

lasting impact in her field and in the lives of those she served, as well as to inspire and support future nursing students.

“When she was 15, Kathy rode her bike to a local nursing home and asked for a job because she wanted to be a nurse,” her husband, Otis, said in a news release.

“My wife was born to care for others and spent her life doing just that. She was an incredible nurse, friend, mother, wife and grandmother. We hope this scholarship will help a student currently working in the medical field who wants to attend IVCC to further their career. Kathy would have loved knowing that she would be helping so many students follow her path.”

For information about IVCC’s scholarship opportunities and creating new scholarships or contributing to existing ones, please visit the IVCC Foundation webpage at ivcc.edu/givetoivcc or call Tracy Beattie, executive director of the Foundation, at 815-224-0550.

TRACK & FIELD

Rodriguez has three top 5 finishes at USATF regional meet

Putnam County’s Alex Rodriguez had three topfive finishes at the USATF Region 7 Meet this weekend at Proviso East High School in Maywood. He placed third in the hammer throw with a toss of 47.13 meters, fourth in the shot put (15.33 meters) and used his sixth and final throw in the discus to snag a fifth-place medal at 46.41 meters.

Rodriguez qualified for the National Junior Olympics in all three events in Savannah, Georgia, the week of July 21, but will opt out as he did last year.

SENIOR LEAGUE BASEBALL

IVBL excited to represent District 20 in annual region tournament

Senior League event begins Friday in Peru

Growing up in Spring Valley, Mike Argubright never had the opportunity to play in the Senior League Baseball Central Region Tournament, but he fondly recalls attending.

“I’ve gone almost every year,” Argubright said. “I’ve always enjoyed watching it, especially when I was younger watching the bigger kids who seemed like giants back then.”

Now, Argubright is leading a team, including his son, Geno, into the Central Region Tournament as the coach of the Illinois Valley Baseball League team that will represent District 20 this week.

The championship game is at 10 a.m. Thursday, July 17.

“We’re extremely excited to represent the district,” Mike Argubright said. “I hope all the kids on my team and in our district understand how lucky we are to host such a prestigious event. We are very lucky. I wish all kids in the district would battle to make their respective teams with the goal of representing their district and community.”

Illinois Valley is comprised of players from La Salle, Peru, Oglesby, and Utica, consisting of seven sophomores and eight freshmen, with 14 players from La Salle-Peru and one from St. Bede.

“We’re young and ambitious,” Mike Argubright said.

The Illinois Valley team in the regional tournament is a combination of players from the two

Illinois Valley teams that played during the season.

Illinois Valley earned an automatic berth in the regional tournament since no other area league had a team for a district tournament.

“As an all-star team, we’ve played zero games,” Mike Argubright said. “We had two Senior League teams for Illinois Valley this year with 13 kids apiece. We pretty much played each other, and we each played Spring Valley one time, so it was a very condensed season for Senior League.”

Team members are pitchers Geno Argubright, Will Gende, Zach Pescetto and Kam Fransen along with Espen McFadden, Brock Pikul, Kaden Bertuli, Caleb Plut, Hunter Sale, Nicholas Campbell, Griffin Kellett, Emmitt Olsen, Aiden Dziarnowski, Adan Pantoja and Trenton Schinkey.

“The keys to success are minimizing free bases with walks,” Mike Argubright said. “That’s super important. We need our pitchers to throw strikes. We need to play good defense in the infield. I’m really happy with our outfield right now. We just need some good performances out of the infield to make the routine plays, and I think we should do OK.”

The Illinois Valley Senior League baseball team bounced back from an opening-round loss in the Central Region Tournament to defeat Missouri 13-5 on Sunday.

On Sunday, Illinois Valley, which outhit Missouri 15-4, scored a run in the top of the second inning on an RBI single by Aiden Dziarnowski and scored in every inning the rest of the way.

Pantoja was 2 for 5 with three RBIs and a run, Trent Schinkey

went 4 for 4 and scored a run, McFadden was 2 for 5 with a run and an RBI, Campbell doubled twice, scored three runs and drove in two, Pescetto was 1 for 5 with two RBI, Griffin Kellett went 1 for 4 with an RBI and three runs, Kaden Bertulli had a hit, two RBIs and Dziarnowski went 2 for 3 with an RBI.

Bertullli started on the mound, allowing four runs (two earned) on four hits with two strikeouts and three walks in five innings.

Pantoja tossed 12/3 innings, giving up an unearned run on two hits with a strikeout and two walks and Emmitt Olsen retired the only batter he faced to close out the game.

Also on Sunday, Indiana edged Missouri 5-4, Illinois routed Ohio 24-0 and Kentucky beat Nebraska 16-8.

IVBL dropped their first game, 9-3 to Iowa on Saturday. Iowa broke the game open in the top of the seventh, scoring six runs on six hits and two hit batters to take a 9-0 lead.

The District 20 representative scored all three of its runs in the bottom of the seventh. Pantoja hit an RBI single, Schinkey brought in a run with a fielder’s choice and Brock Pikul drew a bases-loaded walk before a pickoff ended the game.

Pantoja was 3 for 4 with an RBI, while Schinkey was 2 for 4 with an RBI and Kaden Bertulli was 1 for 1.

Also on Saturday, Indiana beat Kentucky 11-5 in the first game of the tournament, Ohio defeated Nebraska 15-8 and defending champion Illinois shut out Michigan 9-0.

Illinois Valley returned to action Tuesday morning against Ohio.
