“He ensures each student feels important and confident in their career path. He is not afraid to go into detail about what it takes to be in this field,” Illinois Valley Community College student Ashli Moore also said in the news release.

“He teaches us what to expect and how to handle that situation in a multitude of ways. He brings in ideas and people that relate to the profession.” Illinois Valley Community College student Aiden McLaughlin said in the news release.

Jaycie Frederick appreciated that “he never sugarcoats anything and is as honest and real as a teacher can get. He helps

the groundwork for internships and employment for several students.

Hubbell said he intends to connect concepts and practical experiences “so students can understand what they are learning applies beyond the textbook. It makes the material more engaging and relevant and lets me prepare students to think more critically about the field and their future roles in it.”

He traces his teaching philosophy to his own mentors, particularly an Illinois State University professor who “taught me that grace goes a long way in creating a positive connection with students.”

Hubbell received a higher education doctorate from Illinois State University.

He joined the college’s faculty in 2022.

Hubbell worked as a McLean County probation officer and advises the college’s student Criminal Justice Association.

The college’s award recipient also was submitted for the state Outstanding Faculty Award.

Loveland and nominees Danielle Bell, Doris Burke, Miguel Hermosillo, Luke Olivero, Kelli Shan and Erin Templeton were recognized at the college’s annual employee r e c o g n i t i o n e v e n t Aseret Loveland Thursday, April 16.

Illinois Valley Community College colleague Diane Scoma drew on Loveland’s co-workers and students she counsels to illustrate a compassionate and driven personality who energizes and uplifts students and colleagues in her nomination.

Loveland is an Illinois Valley Community College graduate and earned a master’s in college student counseling and personnel services. She joined the college’s admissions and records department staff in 2015 and a Project Success counselor in 2023.

“Both roles let me connect with students to help them feel excited about their futures. Those interactions energize me and remind me how meaningful it is to play even a small part in their college journey by supporting and empowering them. I did not always have that level of guidance in high school and I understand how impactful that support can be,” Loveland said in a news release.

Loveland briefly met Skerston while interning at the college and remembers her energetic spirit and can-do attitude.

“I like to think she left that energy behind for others to carry forward. I feel incredibly fortunate to have stepped in to a role shaped by her impact and it means a great deal to be recognized in a way that continues her legacy.” Loveland also said in the news release.

Scoma wrote that students are naturally drawn to Loveland, who “looks for ways to build connections and team spirit and to elevate others. She is equally comfortable stepping forward to lead when needed or stepping back to allow others to shine.”

A student said Loveland’s “down-toearth attitude and compassionate nature have made her an anchor for me.”

Quintin Overocker, Loveland’s former admissions department supervisor, said Loveland led the creation of enrollment, transfer and orientation activities and credited her with transforming student engagement.

Loveland is a member of the college’s Hispanic Leadership Team and Project Success Leadership Team. She also is part of the Illinois Valley Hispanic Partnership Council, NCI Artworks and the Birth to Five Council.

This is the 26th year of the Support Staff Distinguished Service Award, which was renamed in honor of the late Connie Dzierzynski Skerston, assistant director of admissions and records.

Nursing tutor M’Kenzee Smith will now be considered for state recognition

By BILL FRESKOS bfreskos@shawmedia.com Nursing tutor M’Kenzee Smith of Ottawa has been named Illinois Valley Community College’s 2026 Outstanding Part-Time Faculty Award recipient.

Smith, along with nominees Mary Greve, Brent Hanson and Morgan Myre were honored earlier this month during IVCC’s annual employee recognition event.

M’Kenzee Smith “To be recognized is both humbling and rewarding,” Smith wrote in a news release. “This award reflects the impact I hope to have on students and my goal of making learning relatable and realistic, so it has a lasting impact beyond the classroom.”

Smith, who previously served as a clinical and lab instructor, said tutoring allows her to provide more flexibility and individualized support to students.

“Students have different learning styles and not all content fits one

approach,” she wrote.

In addition to her work at IVCC, Smith is a hospice and palliative care nurse practitioner and holds a Master of Science in Nursing, an advanced practice certificate in palliative care and a Doctor of Nursing Practice. She is also certified as a nurse practitioner in both family practice and adult-gerontology acute care.

“Making the connection between theory and practice is important because students will someday be my colleagues,” Smith said. “Ultimately, I hope to help students become thoughtful, confident nurses prepared to care for patients, support families, and continue growing throughout their careers,” she said.

Student Delaney Sheehan credited Smith’s teaching style in her nomination.

“This professor is the main reason I am passing my nursing courses,” Sheehan wrote. “She is truly amazing and provides such a safe place for learning. She applies every lesson to the hospital setting and always reminds us how we can be safe and caring, more than just a nurse.”

Smith graduated from IVCC in 2012 and returned to teach in 2022. She and her husband, Collin, have two children, Kallum and Remy.

After earning the local award, she will now be considered for the state’s Outstanding Part-Time Faculty Award.

The Marshall-Putnam County Fair is taking applications for its annual beauty pageant on July 12.

There will three competitions between a trio of age groups. The Little Miss will be aged 5-10, Junior Miss will be 6-15 and the Miss Marshall-Putnam will be aged 16-21.

The winners of the Little Miss, Junior Miss and Miss Competition will reign over the county fair and promote agriculture during their year of service. Additionally, the winner of the Miss division will earn a

$1,500 scholarship and $250 cash.

They also will have an opportunity to compete for Miss Illinois County Fair Queen.

“This pageant is a great way for girls to volunteer in the community, learn communication skills such as interview and onstage questions, and to gain friendships within our two counties,” pageant director Brianna Legner wrote in a news release.

Take a bow if you answered May. In recent years, the TBM Avengers have provided a nice boost for Peru’s city coffers during the merry month of May. The 11th annual TBM Avenger Reunion & Salute to Veterans will be May 15 to 16 at the Illinois Valley Regional Airport. Weather will have considerable sway over attendance, but Alderman Jim Lukosus said that the city anticipates a 15% increase in attendance during the two-day event.

Last year’s Avenger show attracted an estimated 15,000 to 17,000 visitors during two days, and this year’s projection is about 20,000 visitors. Lukosus said that retailers, restaurateurs and hoteliers have expressed excitement about the flock coming in.

Somewhat less certain is how many TBM Avengers will fly in.

“We’ve gotten very good responses,” Lukosus said. “Between 12 and 14 own-

Peru Mayor Ken Kolowski said he’s hoping for a double-digit response and good weather because the event is mushrooming in popularity and because the city is always eager to honor the men and women who served.

Kolowski said the TBM show also

boosts the city’s retail revenue. May is a historically strong retail month because residents buy flowers, patio furniture and supplies for home improvement projects once the weather turns nice.

“But do the TBMs help? Absolutely,” Kolowski said, adding that tourists visit from across the nation. “There’s an uptick in hotels, restaurants and amenities. It’s great. Tourism is a big part of everything.”

That certainly was the case in 2025.

The city’s May retail share was a samemonth record $723,000, en route to a yearly record $8.4 million. That’s the city’s share only – the city’s total sales volume is much higher. Only at the holidays did the city have a bigger sales month in 2025.

That pattern largely has held since the pandemic ended. Retail sales in May jumped 38% once COVID-19 restrictions were lifted between 2020 and 2021. Lineitem revenue data isn’t available to show how much the TBM Avengers contribute, but Kolowski said that the event is a moneymaker and a big draw.

Peru Police Chief Sarah Raymond said parking will be free. Officers will be on hand to direct motorists into parking spaces on the grass. Handicapped-accessible parking will be at the far north entrance on Plank Road, which is the main entrance to the airport.

Smoking is strictly prohibited, as the presence of fumes and oil precludes any sort of open flame. Visitors are to stay in designated areas, not touch any aircraft and abide by all instructions issued by police and event volunteers.

The Illinois Department of Transportation has advanced the restoration of Princeton’s Red Covered Bridge to the design phase, moving the 163-yearold structure closer to reopening after a semitruck damaged it in November 2023, according to IDOT. The bridge has been closed since the collision damaged the structure’s façade and roof. IDOT has allocated approximately $1 million for repairs and upgrades as part of its multi-year program.

IDOT’s District 3 completed Phase I preliminary engineering in 2025, which defined the scope of work and preliminary cost estimates. The State Historic Preservation Office approved the repair plans in April, confirming they will not adversely affect the bridge’s historic character, IDOT said.

Phase II involves preparing detailed construction plans and specifications.

A second review is expected this summer, with Phase II anticipated to be completed by the end of 2026, accord-

Repairs include complete replacement of the roof and roof cross bracing, replacement of damaged roof cross bracing rods, floor beams and siding, replacement of all existing lighting and wiring, upgraded fire suppression piping and security cameras, and fire-resistant coating on the interior, exterior painting and pump house repairs.

Once Phase II is complete, the project will move to construction. IDOT will put the work out for bid to select a contractor. Construction is tentatively expected to take several months.

Built in 1863 to cross Big Bureau Creek, the Red Covered Bridge is listed on the National Register of Historic Places and is the only state-owned covered bridge still open to traffic. Before the 2023 strike, it accommodated an average of 275 vehicles a day.

According to IDOT, the bridge has survived arson, erosion, high winds and multiple truck strikes.

It serves as a landmark for the Princeton and Bureau County communities, drawing tourists and serving as a backdrop for weddings and proms.

The ceremony will award degrees and certificates to more than 200 graduating students. The commencement ceremony’s featured speaker is Bank of America assistant vice president Zulma Guzman.

News from Putnam County CUSD #535 Facilities Planning At the regular meeting on April 21st, 2026, the Board of Education formally approved moving forward with planning for additions and renovations at Putnam County Elementary School (PCES) in Hennepin and renovations at Putnam County Junior High (PCJH) in McNabb.

This work is intended to address needs identified in the comprehensive facilities assessment completed in Summer 2025.

Preliminary cost estimates for these conceptual designs range from $19.22 million to $24.12 million. These estimates do not include additional expenses such as architect and engineering fees, demolition, and contingencies.

The next step in this process is the selection of a construction manager to partner with the District in completing these projects. This selection process will take place over the next two months and position the District to begin work as soon as possible.

“AI can be used to brainstorm ideas, write email drafts, answer general questions, study for tests and more,” said Kylee Reeves, member of the 4-H Tech Changemakers team.

“It’s important to remember that, while it can be super helpful, it’s still just a tool. AI is not a replacement for your own creativity, thinking or expertise. It doesn’t always have up to date information, so it’s extremely important to fact-

check any information you get from an AI source.”

AI can be wrong, biased or pull ideas from other people’s work. Because of this, youth are encouraged to pause and ask: “Is this helping me learn – and is it respectful and safe?”

Tips for properly using AI: • Model transparency; encourage 4-H members to say when they used AI for ideas, drafting, editing and so on.

• Keep personal info private – no full names, addresses, schools, photos of others and so forth.

• Double-check facts with trusted sources, especially for health, science and safety.

• Make sure the work still is your learning; you should understand it and be able to explain it.

Bosnich didn’t think she was going to run, so she didn’t bring the bottom of her track uniform, but wouldn’t have had time to change anyway.

“I had my track bag with me with my tank top in it and spikes, so I at least had my spikes,” she said. “I was just happy to have made it on time to be announced, but I was even happier that I was able to run one last race on

the track where my hurdle career first started in grade school, even if it was in my softball uniform.”

Ruppert is never surprised by what Bosnich can do. ”Lily is just a special athlete. Probably could play D1 softball somewhere.

Just a typical day on the softball field – hitting a home run, stealing bases, making plays on defense,” he said.

“She’s just an all-around, five-tool player ... speed, power, average, great arm and could probably play any position on the field. It has been so fun coaching her. Best thing about her, she’s a great person. Very humble.”
