Shaw Media The area’s pool of substitute teachers already was getting pretty shallow.

Now comes COVID-19, which could result in more teachers using sick days and more subs needed in the classrooms.

“We had trouble last year, before this even started,” said Bob Sondgeroth, superintendent of the Lee-Ogle-Whiteside Regional Office of Education.

“It’s a statewide issue. There is a shortage of substitute teachers.”

What was a shortage to begin with will be exacerbated by the likelihood of teachers falling ill. Districts are doing symptom screenings and temperature checks at the door at the start of a school day; staff members who test positive or show symptoms will find themselves in quarantine for up to 2 weeks or more, which means someone else will have to step into the classroom.

Sondgeroth is asking anyone interested in being a sub who has a bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution to sign up through the regional office.

things could change, especially if teachers and staff fall ill.

“If we get enough teachers that are ill that we can’t replace them in the in-school learning environment, we may be forced to go remotely,” Everett said.

“Those are all things we’re going to have to be flexible and fluid with.”

From district to district, there are different COVID-19 procedures in place, and Sondgeroth is instructing subs to ask each district what those procedures are.

“If I’m a substitute, that’s the first thing I ask when I walk in to a building: Where are the wipes, what should I be doing, how do I wipe things down, what are your rules for the masks?” he said.

“Our health departments have been amazing. Lee, Ogle and Whiteside County health departments have worked with our administrators. They’ve been on many Zoom meetings with our administrators.”

There is another Zoom meeting next week to go over Illinois Department of Public Health school guidelines issued a week ago that left a lot of the details up to local health departments. Sondgeroth and school district and health department administrators will go over their plans.

COVID-19

The Whiteside County Health Department on Sunday announced five new cases of COVID-19: two people in their 40s, one younger than 20, and people in their 30s and 50s.

Whiteside County has had 454 cases and 18 COVID-related deaths.

Lee, Ogle and Carroll counties did not release updated data on Sunday.

Lee County has had 209 cases, 175 recoveries and one death. Ogle County has had 464 cases, 439 recoveries and five deaths. Carroll County has had 117 cases, 76 recoveries and four deaths.

Illinois announced 1,893 new cases and six deaths. The state has had 220,178 cases and 7,880 deaths.

Sterling has had 1,966 people tested and 166 cases. Rock Falls has had 1,138 tested and 81 cases. Dixon has had 3,681 tested and 173 cases.

The ROE pool was stretched even thinner by districts that have hired full-time subs just to be in Bob Sondgeroth the building, on call, Sondgeroth said.

“I understand. I think that’s a really good idea for them, because you never know when a teacher has to leave,” he said. “To have a sub in the building is fantastic.”

The Chadwick-Milledgeville School District is hoping to head off some potential problems. Monday, its board voted to raise sub pay to $110 per day, in an effort to attract them at a time when they might be hard to find.

Other districts are planning ahead, too.

“I think we’ve called about every sub on the list to try to add to that pool as best we can,” Rock Falls High School Superintendent Ron McCord said. “We have a couple ... who sub all the time who will not be in due to this situation and their own health risks. It’s going to be a challenge from day one.”

The Illinois Department of Public Health (IDPH) launched its new coronavirus disease (COVID-19) travel map to help inform residents of potential risks associated with traveling during the pandemic. The map indicates countries and U.S. states with increased risk of COVID-19 based on case rates.

“Travel may increase the chance of becoming infected and spreading COVID-19,” said IDPH Director Dr. Ngozi Ezike. “To help inform residents where they might be at greater risk of being exposed to COVID-19 when they travel, IDPH has launched a map that clearly shows states and other countries where case rates are elevated.”

Locations that have an average daily case rate of 15 cases per 100,000 or greater are designated as “higher risk” on the map, which can be found at www. dph.illinois.gov/covid19/travel.

Airports, bus stations, train stations, and rest stops are all places travelers

can be exposed to the virus in the air and on surfaces. The more people you come into contact with, for longer periods of time, the greater your risk of infection if you are exposed to someone with COVID-19.

Do not travel when you are sick or with someone who is sick. When traveling, it is especially important to wear your mask, to keep 6 feet of distance between you and others you are not traveling with, and wash your hands frequently or use hand sanitizer if soap and water are not available.

Mike and Connie Cocking, formerly of Erie, will be celebrating their 65th wedding anniversary on Sept. 16.

Mike was a plasterer/contractor in the Erie area and Connie was a registered nurse, working for Dr. Larue in Erie, as well as Illini Hospital. The couple also owned and operated The Other Place on the Erie Triangle.

Mike and Connie retired to Lake Teleco in Maryville, Tennessee, and later moved to Englewood, Florida where they enjoy family, friends

and golf.

They have four daughters, Beth and Roger Jenkins of Overland Park, KS, Gayle and Russ Raab of Clinton, Iowa, Sondra and George Braden of Bettendorf, Iowa, and Shelly Hoefling of Owasso, Oklahoma.

They have 10 grand children and 14 great-grandchildren.

ALBANY

Two trustees resign from Village of Albany board

BY SARAH FORD For Shaw Media The Village of Albany has two new trustees after the recent resignations of Mark Uhde and David Smither.

The board accepted the resignation of Uhde at the Aug. 3 meeting, with Mark Totty appointed to replace him.

At the continuation meeting on Aug. 19, the board accepted the resignation of Smither, with Wiley Blasdell approved by the board to serve the remainder of the term.

The reasons for the resignations were not disclosed, though Uhde and Smither submitted letters to the board that were accepted.

In his report, Chief of Police Wyatt Heyvaert updated the board about Whiteside County’s ongoing discussions to consolidate dispatching fees, after he attended a Public Safety meeting on July 16.

Currently the village pays the

county $360 per year, but that could change to $35,000 a year based on call volume.

All 911 calls in the village are logged, even non-emergencies, and the county wants to charge $25.48 per call.

The village had 1,381 calls last year, Heyvaert said.

He added that Sterling/Rock Falls currently pays $500,000 per year, Fulton $200,000, Morrison $1,200, and Erie $900.

The county is looking into the changing the fee structure after reviewing the current agreements.

The consolidated dispatching system was launched in 2017.

Heyvaert said the focus is on a Public Safety Tax, with the County Board wanting to put it on the November ballot. He cited the success of the tax passed in Henry County in 2014 that helped pay for increased public safety measures, at a rate of ½ of 1%.

Morrison Legion Post 328 celebrates 100 Years

On Aug. 17, Morrison Legion Post 328 held their monthly meeting.

This was no normal meeting as they celebrated their 100 year anniversary. The celebration took place a week later than originally planned as Mother Nature had intervened.

Post 328 was originally chartered on Aug. 10, 1920. Those in attendance started the evening with a cookout and, of course, a cake. State Representative Tony McCombie was also in attendance showing her support to the Post and our Veterans. On

behalf of the 101st General Assembly of the Illinois House of Representatives, Rep. McCombie presented a Certificate of Recognition to the American Legion Post 328. Larry Zuidema, Post Commander, accepted the award on behalf of its members with great pride.

The Post would like to extend its gratitude to Rep. McCombie for taking the time to personally join in the celebration and to the public for its continued support of both Post 328 and its Veterans.

Heritage Canyon recovers from wind damage

It’s been over two weeks since a powerful derecho hit the area, with pockets of damage visible throughout harder hit communities.

Uprooted trees and broken limbs are still a common sight in Fulton, though recovery is underway. Just last week, riverfront neighborhoods were a tangled mess of downed power lines and trees, especially near Heritage Canyon.

“It looks good pretty right now, compared to what it was,” said caretaker Brian Tomman, who was driving home from work and into the neighborhood during the height of the storm. He watched as trees toppled throughout the pioneer village, adding a new struggle to the cityowned park already affected by the pandemic.

According to a map released by the National Weather Service, a large swath of the region endured winds of up to 80 mph. However, Clinton and Fulton were in a smaller bullseye of higher wind speeds, even up to 100 mph or more.

Tomman and a group of neighbors went out with chainsaws the night of the storm to help remove trees blocking driveways and roads. The neighborhood was closed for nearly a week since they didn’t want traffic jams on the narrow street during the extensive cleanup process. They were also hoping to get the power back on quicker if most of the work was done.

Tomman said the mayor, city

crews, and linemen told him 4th St. was one of the hardest hit parts of Fulton that day. Crews got to the electric lines on Saturday, Aug. 15 with power finally restored after nearly a week in the dark.

Still, the canyon remains closed until further notice due to ongoing cleanup, which has been a slow and steady process. Trees are still hanging on other trees that could fall over, and debris still covers the paths. A large tree just missed falling on the chapel, which was thankfully spared of any damage.

When looking at the buildings, Tomman is grateful since it could’ve been a lot worse. With piles of debris and uprooted trees scattered throughout the canyon, the minimal damage to the buildings will see the canyon recover quicker. There are split rails to repair and some trees yet to come down, but overall, the buildings are in good shape.

The Town Hall had a tree dropped on it causing minor damage and the blacksmith shop also fell victim to a tree, with damage estimates to be determined. The covered bridge had minimal damage, with the top part of a tree dropping onto the overhang.

The caretaker’s home sustained some damage, with the wind blowing out the east side of a screened-in porch, which was found about 30 feet away. The chimney cap also blew away. The parking lot across the road has been inaccessible due to an uprooted massive cottonwood tree blocking the drive.

Despite the damage, Tomman says they were “pretty fortunate” overall, especially with the community ready to step in and help.

“We’re thankful for the volunteers that came to help that weekend.

They worked hard and did a lot and changed how this was looking,” Tomman said He expects another volunteer cleanup to be scheduled within a couple weeks, with details to be announced once figured out.

The Jammin’ in the Canyon event that was scheduled for Aug. 20 was canceled due to the damage, in addition to having no place to park. The next Jammin’ event is scheduled for Thursday, Sept. 17.

Tomman said the Fall Festival has

been canceled due to state mandates limiting gatherings of 50 people or more. The event typically draws in 1,200 people during the weekend. The Christmas Walk is still to be determined, depending on state mandates.

Looking at the bright side, Tomman says he now has a better view of the river. “The park will bounce back from this,” he said. He encourages the community to come out and support the Heritage Canyon in the future.

BY KATHLEEN A. SCHULTZ kschultz@saukvalley.com 815-632-2531 The family of a motorcyclist killed when he collided with a Whiteside County sheriff’s squad car that was making an illegal left turn has won a $3.6 million settlement from Whiteside County and an official apology from the department.

William G. Damhoff, 58, of Morrison, died July 25, 2016, when his motorcycle struck Deputy Jeffrey Wunderlich’s squad car as the deputy was turning off U.S. Route 30 on to Emerson Road shortly before 10:30 p.m., using the turn lane for traffic going in the other direction and despite a do not enter sign.

He was not using his emergency lights or siren.

Wunderlich, 37, of Fenton, who was off-duty, but responding to a call for officers to help search for a man missing in a field in Sterling, was charged with making an improper left turn, turning the wrong way on a one-way, and

improper lane usage, all minor traffic charges.

Rock Island-based 14th Judicial Circuit Court Judge Ted Kutsunis ruled on May 23, 2018, and an appellate court agreed, that under state law, because Wunderlich was responding to an emergency, he was immune from criminal prosecution.

Damhoff’s wife, Lynette, also filed a wrongful death suit in Whiteside County Court; the out-of-court settlement was authorized and the case dismissed on Aug. 4.

In a statement released by her attorney, Trent Bush of Ward, Murray, Pace & Johnson in Sterling, Damhoff expressed her grief and frustration.

“When Deputy Wunderlich decided to turn left in front to Bill, hitting him, Bill suffered multiple bone fractures. The ribs that were broken punctured Bill’s lungs and caused his lungs to fill up with blood. Bill lay on the road and suf-

focated to death.

“No one from the Sheriff’s Department ever contacted me that night, or in the four years since. The cruelty of this still makes me very angry. I wouldn’t wish this horror on anyone. Bill did not deserve this, and neither did I.” As part of the settlement requirements, Sheriff John Booker, who was not sheriff at the time of the crash, issued a written, signed apology to Damhoff in which he admits Wunderlich was at fault.

It reads in part: “Deputy Wunderlich … should have been utilizing his emergency lights at the time of the accident.

At the time, due to light traffic on a rural road, he thought it was safer to proceed but he now realizes, with the benefit of hindsight, that it was a wrong decision and that his emergency lights should have been used.

“I have issued a statement to all deputies in my office to empha-

size that they should always utilize their emergency lights (and/or siren where appropriate) … except in such circumstances (such as a surreptitious approach to a suspected crime scene) where the use of emergency lights and/or a siren is not in the interests of safe law enforcement.”

He also states that “Deputy Wunderlich also should have exercised more care in executing his left hand turn at the subject intersection. Although Deputy Wunderlich thought that Bill’s motorcycle was a safe distance away when he made his left turn, he should have taken more time to assess the situation in order to adequately assess the distance of Bill’s approaching motorcycle.”

According to the State Police crash reconstruction report, Wunderlich’s decision to turn the wrong way into the one-way lane was “the contributing factor” in Damhoff’s death.

OBITUARIES ARLYN C. ANDERSON

Arlyn C. Anderson, 85, of Erie passed away on Monday, August 17, 2020, peacefully at his home.

A funeral service was held at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, Aug. 22, at Loraine United Methodist Church, Prophetstown. Reverends Keith Bradley and Rod Dye officiated. Burial followed at Loraine Cemetery, Prophetstown. Visitation was held from 4-7 p.m. on Friday, Aug. 21, at Vandemore Funeral Homes and Crematory – Geneseo Chapel.

Memorials may be directed to Loraine United Methodist Church, American Cancer Society, or Honor Flight.

Arlyn was born on July 23, 1935, to Ivor and Amelia Anderson, in rural Erie.

He graduated from Geneseo High School in 1953. He married Mildred “Susie” Gainey on Nov. 24, 1957, in Geneseo, and together they had four children.

Arlyn was a passionate lifetime farmer in Loraine Township, retiring at age 80.

He was active in the community as a board member of the former Farmer’s Mutual Electric Company and a dedicated member of Loraine United Methodist Church.

He loved to compete in antique tractor pulls with his Oliver tractor. He was always willing to offer a helping hand to anyone who needed it. He loved spending time with his family and took great pleasure in watching his kids, grandkids, and great-grandkids grow up.

Those left to cherish his memory include his wife, Mildred “Susie” Anderson; children, Jim (Kathy) Anderson, Erie, Carmen Jensen, Roscoe, Cheryl (Jim) Burton, Geneseo, and Pam (Craig) Taylor, Nolensville, Tennessee; nine grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren and twins on the way; sister, Sharon (Elmer) Schweninger, Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.

He was preceded in death by his parents Ivor and Amelia and son-in-law Philip Jensen.

JERRY CONNER, SR.

Jerry David Conner, Sr, 79, of Port Byron, died Monday, August 10, 2020 at Unity Point - Trinity, Rock Island.

There will be no public services at this time. Private burial will be in Fairfield Cemetery, Port Byron.

DOROTHY MAE STONE

Dorothy Mae Stone, 101, of Fulton, died Monday, August 17, 2020, at Harbor Crest Home in Fulton.

At her request, her body has been donated to the Anatomical Gift Association of Illinois for Medical Science Study.

A Celebration of Life will be announced at a later date.

The Fulton Chapel of the Bosma-Renkes Funeral Home is assisting the family. Interment of cremains will take place at Garden Plain Cemetery in rural Fulton.

Dorothy was born Aug. 6, 1919, in Newton Township, to Everett and Velma (Reynolds) Ege. She was educated in the rural Whiteside Country grade schools and was a graduate of Erie High School in Erie.

She graduated also from Blackburn College in Carlinville and Marycrest College in Davenport, Iowa.

Dorothy married Robert D. Stone on March 22, 1942, in Garden Plain. He died Sept. 11, 2012.

Dorothy was first employed as a teacher in the Crouch and Byers schools of rural Whiteside County.

Later she continued her teaching career in the Albany and Garden Plain Grade Schools and most recently she was an elementary school teacher for the Riverbend School District for 14 years retiring in 1979.

Dorothy was a member of the Garden Plain Presbyterian Church in rural Fulton, the Retired Teachers Association, and the Natural Area Guardians “N.A.G.” of Whiteside County.

She enjoyed antiquing, camping, and was an avid reader.

Survivors include one son, Dr. Bob (Pamela Nelson) Stone of Plano; two grandchildren, Meghan (Kyle) Dean of St. Charles, and Brady (Joni) Stone of Hamden, Connecticut; three step grandchildren, four great-grandchildren, Vivienne Dean; Jaden, Tyler, and Leila Mae Stone; one sister in law Barbara Ege; one brother in law, Carl Romano; and many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Robert; a daughter-in-law, Marjorie Stone; three sisters, Mervyn Romano, Marian Finnicum and Bernice Scharfenberg; two brothers, Bill Ege and Robert Ege in infancy.

Keith C. Jones, 78, of Morrison, passed away on Tuesday, April 14, 2020 at Genesis East Medical Center, Davenport Iowa.

A Celebration of Life will be held at the Masonic Lodge, 227 E. Main Street, Morrison, on Saturday, Aug. 29, from 2-4 p.m. A Masonic service will follow.

Cake and refreshments will be provided.

A memorial has been established to the Shriner’s Hospital for Crippled Children.

Donna Jean Lewis, 87, of Morrison, died Sunday, August 16, 2020 surrounded by her family at home near Morrison.

There will be no visitation. Graveside services were held at 4:30 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 18 at the Erie Cemetery.

John L. Melton, of Prophetstown, died Friday, August 21, 2020, at his home.

A private family service will be held at the Prophetstown United Methodist Church with Larry Richmond, a family friend, officiating.

A public graveside service will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 29, at Riverside Cemetery in Prophetstown.

The family requests that all who attend wear a mask and social distance.

Cremation rites have been accorded.

The Bosma-Gibson Funeral Home in Prophetstown is in charge of arrangements.

Memorials have been established to Prophetstown American Legion and Multiple Sclerosis Association of America.

John was born Jan. 28, 1932, in Prophetstown, to James B. and Edith Pearl (Burgess) Melton.

He was educated in the Portland Country School and Tampico Grade School and was a graduate of Prophetstown High School.

He served as military police in the United States Air Force during the Korean Conflict. John married Mary Lou

Blumhoff on May 21, 1952, in Prophetstown.

He farmed in the rural Prophetstown and Tampico area.

John was a member of the Prophetstown United Methodist Church and a member of the Prophetstown American Legion Post #522.

He was a former member of the Tampico Lions Club. John enjoyed his biweekly Pinochle card games in Tampico with his friends and enjoyed fishing when he had the time.

He was a selfless man, helping his neighbors and friends whenever needed.

John was an avid Chicago Cubs fan and University of Illinois football and basketball fan.

He loved spending time with his family especially his grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

First Majestic Pines Car & Bike Show was a hit

Tons of sunshine and hot rod temperatures made for a perfect Majestic Pines Car & Bike Show in Thomson on Aug. 23.

A total of 134 cars and bikes entered the inaugural show with $15 entry fees put into a 50/50 drawing, with half the cash prize donated to Northwest Medical in Chicago for cancer research through Hot Rods for a Cure.

The event drew a colorful mix of car and bikes from across the region, both old and new.

Despite the heat, organizers were pleased with the turnout. Music and food and pockets of shade provided relief from the mid-day sun.

Spectators cast their votes for the best cars, made difficult by the number of entries, quality and variety.

Steve Tegeler of Clinton, Iowa and his Scooby Doo inspired Mystery Machine was hard to miss. The 2004 movie provided inspiration for his “clone” project, a 1996 Chevy van he spruced up and has been bringing to local car shows for the past five years.

Tegeler said he did the inside work and interior panels, and a crew at J&S Autobody in Savanna provided the painting, graphics, and pinstriping. The license plate is even the same as in the movie.

“It’s a hobby, but I let the kids play with it,” he said smiling, adding that it’s his personal collection of Scooby Doo memorabilia displayed in the car.

Kevin Blackburn of Polo drove out in his 1933 Nash, also known as the Road Rat. With only 1,000 models made, the vehicle is a rarity. He said he usually does pretty well with it at car shows.

Jim Leverington of Freeport showcased a 1966 Studebaker Hawk “Gran Turismo,” a project car he and his late father worked on after rescuing it from 20 years in a dirt floor barn in South Bend, Indiana many years ago.

After they completed the project, the car sat in his dad’s garage until Jim encouraged him to show it at car shows. After a few shows, the car was given to him.

“It’s a low mileage car (30K), it goes really fast, and it’s a lot of fun to drive,” Leverington said.

A former track champion at the Maquoketa Speedway, he now likes to spend his time showing instead of racing.

Local celebrities Tom Lackiewicz and Punky the parrot, a 27-year-old bird native to Brazil, were also spotted roaming the grounds. The pair

attend as many car shows as possible, with Punky riding comfortably atop Tom’s hat.

“He’s been around a long time.

He likes these kinds of things,” he chuckled.

In a typical year, Angus juniors from across the nation would have attended the annual Leaders Engaged in Angus Development (LEAD) conference this summer.

But due to COVID-19 restrictions, the National Junior Angus Board (NJAB) and the Events and Education department at the American Angus Association® had to adapt this well-attended event from its initial venue in Orlando, Florida.

Camp Angus, hosted Aug. 4-6 in Nebraska City, Nebraska, served as an alternative to the usually highly anticipated LEAD conference.

Madeline Bauer, events coordinator for the association said the objective of Camp Angus is to provide juniors with opportunities to meet fellow Angus youth, engage with industry leaders and take part in activities, promoting growth and personal development. She spoke about unlocking the potential each junior has within them to succeed.

“Camp Angus was a success as we could see the passion and fire that are in these juniors’ eyes,” said Bauer. “The goal was to ignite that fire, and we hope the juniors keep the flame going as they navigate through their junior years.”

Earl Lawton has purchased the Standard Oil Service Station which had been operated by Marvin Bultema for some time. The station will now be known as Earl’s Standard.

He plans to improve the business by adding many of the Standard Oil and other auto accessories not now handled by the station.

Mr. and Mrs. Charles Wilcox returned from a trip out west, where they had witnessed a ceremony that honored earthquake victims from the quake that occurred on August 17, 1959. On a plaque are names of the 28 victims that perished in that earthquake.

50 Years Sept. 2, 1970

Two veteran teachers have retired from the Fulton school. Miss Hazel Schaad, who taught home economics for 18 years, has retired. James Nesti, who taught social studies at the junior high level for 23 years, also retired from the teaching profession.

Specialist Four Terry Ottens recently received the Bronze Star Medal while serving with the Army near Pleiku, Vietnam. He was presented the medal for distinguishing himself through meritorious service in connection with military operations against hostile, forces in Vietnam.

40 Years Aug. 27, 1970

Work will start on a $2,701,256 segment of Fulton’s Flood Control system. The new contract covers two 9,200 foot long sections of levee located in and near south Fulton.

Robers Dredge, Inc., of LaCrosse, Wisconsin, will be doing the work.

At a meeting with the Fulton Dike Beautification Commission and the U.S.Corps of Engineers, plans were unveiled for a large 25 acre park in the southwest part of Fulton. Unless construction plans change, the park will extend from the Mark Morris bridge south to the area near the

Fulton Boat Harbor.

BY STEPHEN D. HARRISON, M.D Neurofibromatosis is a term that includes several related types of diseases. Often there is a genetic component which may affect about one in 3,0004,000 individuals.

However, some estimate that up to half of new cases are not inherited but come from a genetic mutation.

The condition is sometimes not detected until later in life, particularly if there are not any prominent manifestations.

The most common type of neurofibromatosis is now known as NF1. To diagnose, the doctor will typically look for six or more light brown spots on the skin known as cafe’-au-lait.

Perhaps the best way to interpret this French phrase is to a type of coffee stain appearance. These may be just half a centimeter on the small range and several centimeters in their larger presentation.

Another skin manifestation may be freckling in unusual areas such as the armpit or groin. Eye involvement of the iris or the optic nerve is another feature consistent with NF1.

Abnormal development of the spine or temple of the skull or the tibia may be part of the presentation.

One’s risks are increased if there is a parent or sibling or child with NF1.

Headaches and epilepsy or seizures are a little more common in NF1 than in the general population.

Neurofibromas are bumps below the skin that may increase with age and are often the characteristics associated with the condition.

There are actually tumors involving several nerves. Rarely there are problems with circulation or heart defects.

On occasion there are learning disabilities and challenges with visual spatial skills and other areas that may affect reading, spelling and math.

Sometimes the tumors associated with these conditions may become cancerous and require aggressive treatment. Many people with the condition will lead normal lives.

Treatment may be challenging because scientists don’t know how to prevent the neurofibromas from growing.

Surgery may be performed on larger tumors or tumors that cause symptoms or the small number that become cancerous, or those that cause cosmetic challenges.

Sometimes radiation or chemotherapy is employed. Other treatments are

aimed at controlling or relieving symptoms such as headaches or the occasional seizures.

NF2 is a more rare condition that occurs in 1 of 25,000 individuals.

About half the time it is inherited with the other half caused by genetic mutation. The main characteristic of this type is the presence of a slow growing tumor on the 8th cranial nerve of the brain.

In one form hearing may be affected and in the other, balance. Therefore these can lead to serious disabilities.

Other nerve tumors known as a schwannomas may occur in other nerves in the body including spinal nerves or nerves in the extremities.

Sometimes these tumors are seen at bumps below the skin. These individuals though usually do not have the care’au-lait spots referenced above. Because these tumors may cause more damage, a surgical intervention may be offered sooner than other situations.

A third type that is somewhat related involves a similar type of tumor in nerves throughout the body but spares the 8th nerve. Both of these types may be difficult to pick up until advanced symptoms are present.

Voters to decide on sales tax increase for 911 operations

BY ERIC INGLES Shaw Media MORRISON – Whiteside County voters will be asked to OK a proposed sales tax to help fund 911 operations on Nov. 3, the board decided at its monthly meeting last week.

The 0.5% sales tax increase would help pay salaries of 911 dispatchers, now paid by the cities of Sterling and Rock Falls, the ambulance district on the eastern side of the county and police departments on the western side. It would amount to an additional $5 for every $1,000 of retail goods sold in the county.

side paid anywhere from $180 in Lyndon to $1,200 in Morrison last year.

Towns and villages are billed per radio unit, portable units at $10 each and mobile units at $5 each.

State taxes on landline phones and cellphones go to pay for equipment and software for 911 services.

The county employs 22 dispatchers, 14 in Sterling and eight in Morrison.

“I think there’s a hope that eventually we could accumulate enough money in the fund that we could build a dedicated dispatch center, which would make like a whole lot easier for the sheriff,” board Chair-

man James Duffy said.

The county board also approved a mask ordinance empowering the sheriff to remove anyone from a county building or property, or a county meeting, for not wearing a mask, and an ordinance to encourage people to wear a mask and practice social distancing during the duration of the COVID-19 pandemic.

The county is buying 60 sneeze guards to use at polling places in November – one for each precinct, offices committee Chairman James Arduini said. The $5,757 cost will be reimbursed through the federal CARES Act. The board also approved a motion

from the Landfill Committee to increase the fees for pickup loads from $15 to $20, and oversized loads from $30 to $40.

Those fees have not changed since 1996; the new ones take effect Jan. 1.

The board also voted to approve a $200,000 road resurfacing project in the Woodland Hills subdivision in Sterling Township, and to increase the sanitary sewer fee for the Walmart Distribution Center.

The fees are split between the city of Sterling and the county, and Sterling recently raised its fee, so the county is raising its fee to continue to receive the same amount.

the contemporary worship set. Ministry Coordinator Rich Criss will also be the organist, providing the prelude, interlude and postlude for the service.

Reservations are needed to attend the service where social distancing is practiced and wearing of face masks is strongly recommended. Please call to leave a message or text your name, which service, how many attending and contact number beginning Tuesday morning through 4 p.m. Saturday afternoons. The Emmanuel Church reservation line is 815-213-8715. Reservations are received on a first-come, first served basis with a maximum of 100 in the sanctuary at one time.
