LIFE LESSONS

Prophetstown author in the running for award

BY SARAH FORD For Shaw Media Mary Stegmiller is hoping her first book, “Life Lessons from King David and Grandma” will be among those chosen for an Author Academy Award, an annual contest through Author Academy Elite’s publishing platform.

After submitting her work for consideration, Stegmiller’s book was entered in the religious category for the annual contest.

Public voting was supposed to wrap up on Aug. 1 but was extended through Aug. 25. Once public voting ends, a panel of judges will interview the top vote-getting authors before announcing the winners.

Whether she takes the top prize - which includes media coverage and publicity, additional private training, and the Academy Boon of Merit Award- she will treasure the personal accomplishment in completing a goal that she’s always had.

“It’s my imagination that spurred me to write. I’m a storyteller,and I figured I can tell the stories to myself or share with others. So I get to share with others, finally,” she said of her inspiration for the book.

Some encouragement from family and friends also helped her in the process.

“What I do is create easy to understand Bible stories and poetry that people can relate to and avoid falling asleep with the Bible on their laps,”she said.

Last year, Stegmiller enlisted the services of Author Academy Elite in her quest to share her stories from the heart.

There was an upfront financial investment, but Stegmiller said she “couldn’t have gotten it done without them.”

Their free training and guidance were invaluable in her efforts to craft the stories she wanted to tell, she says. The company offers a premium support system for aspiring authors, while skipping the traditional and self-published models for publication.

She was offered guidance on how to make her book more relatable. Book coaches provided thoughtful questions to draw out her audience and what they’d get out of it, and other insight on what to write and what does her story mean to her. They encouraged attention to areas that needed work, and even suggested Bible study questions for the readers.

During the writing process, Stegmiller recalled reading the Bible as a new and young Christian, and where “it would put me to sleep as my mind would wander.” But as she got older and “more focused” in her journey, she found that the stories would appear in her mind and Mary Stegmiller holds her imagination a copy of her book. would takeoff.

Her vision was “trying to bring life to the Bible,” even though the stories are 3,000 years ago.

She was especially drawn to King David, and topics such as jealousy between him and his brothers, and why did God choose him?

After less than a year of writing, she was able to publish her 220-page book which debuted in November 2019.

She opens each chapter with one of her poems, even though her first inclination was to subtly weave the poetry in the stories. She decided that wasn’t good enough, and she had to be real in the process.

An RN for most of her working years, she was also a correspondent in the newspaper industry for four years in the 1990s. She covered village board and school district meetings, local interest stories, and provided occasional photography.

She developed photos in a dark room in the basement at the Prophetstown Echo office for a time. She has an archive of stories in the Sterling Gazette and the Quad City Times newspapers.

With a birthday on July 4, she refers to herself as a firecracker. She is a mother to four children, grandmother to ten, and great-grandma to five with two more on the way. She and husband Kenneth have been married for 34 years.

She’s a member of Rock River Christian Center in Rock Falls.

She lived in Lyndon until she was 9, then her family moved to Miami, Florida, which she called a big culture shock.

A couple years later they returned to Prophetstown. She graduated from high school in 1968 and attended Sauk Valley Community College, Northern Illinois University, and eventually Bradley University before practicing as a nurse and putting down roots in the community.

She hopes this book is the first of a series.

“It depends on popularity of book,” she laughs. She’s also pursuing more of her own poetry and may utilize the publishing platform to bring more to print.

“You’ve got to see the possibilities and see that you’re able, which I finally did,” she concludes with a smile.

Before the pandemic, she was starting to sell copies of her book at the Sterling Farmers Market, where she hopes to return as a vendor soon.

Warren and Brooklynn were born on Aug. 3, at Great River Hospital in West Burlington.

Warren weighed 5 pounds, 13 ounces and was 19 inches, while Brooklynn weighed 6 pounds, 1 ounce and was 18 inches.

Maternal grandparents are Tom and Jan Unruh of Avon and paternal grandparents are JR and Jamie Scherer of Fort Myers, Florida.

She was born in Fulton and attended Fulton schools.

Eloise was married to Ken Bush for 68 years; Ken passed away in 2009.

She is a member of Ebenezer Reformed Church, where she taught catechism and Bible study.

Eloise worked for many years at Volckman’s/Ethan Allen furniture factory in Morrison, did volunteer work at Morrison Community Hospital and Resthave, and now enjoys making cards and spending time with her many friends.

She has a daughter and son-inlaw, Bonnie Bush and John Peart, who live in Chicago.

In lieu of a party, Eloise will be greeting friends from her porch or front lawn on Saturday, Aug. 29 from 2 to 3 p.m. Please drive by to honk and wave.

Destructive storms sweep through Midwest

BY SARAH FORD For Shaw Media A rare and powerful derecho swept through the region on Monday, Aug. 10, bringing destructive winds of 70-115 mph. With just a few hours’ notice, the storm was a surprise to weather forecasters and those in its path, as the force

and longevity of the winds wreaked havoc in the Midwest.

The storm formed in South Dakota on Monday morning and traveled 770 miles in 14 hours, sparing few in its path from destructive winds likened to a hurricane. From flattened crops, uprooted trees, and mangled power lines, the damage inflicted was swift, massive and widespread.

The last recorded derecho in the area was on July 20, 2008.

Few in the area were spared from the effects of the storm, whether property or tree damage, or the after-effects of no electricity and running water for days. Without power, many businesses closed for the week, while citizens and neighbors worked together to make sure basic needs were taken care of. The shock of the storm reverberated all week, as the magnitude of the damage sunk in.

In Fulton, Wierenga’s Heritage Canyon was hit hard, with dozens of trees strewn about the grounds.

They asked for volunteers on Saturday to help clear up the mess. The canyon is closed until further notice due to the extensive clean-up needed, including many uprooted trees.

Morrison officials also asked for volunteers to help cleanup at the cemetery and Kelly Park. Power was still not completely restored as

of Friday, though much progress had been made. Yard waste pick-up procedures will be relaxed due to the severity of the storm, with city crews expected to begin that process over the next few days.

Wyatt Heyvaert, Albany Chief of Police, said many utility poles in town were snapped in half and extensive work was needed to get the village back online. He thanked citizens and good Samaritans for stepping up and helping remove trees and branches from the road after the storm hit. “We all worked together for the common good,” he said.

Erie, Lyndon, and Prophetstown had long-lasting outages, with the majority of services restored to businesses and households on Thursday afternoon or Friday morning. The roof of the Lyndon Fire Department blew off the building, landing in the

Erie Police Chief Rollie Elder commended the community for “great acts of kindness” such as citizens sharing generators, water and electricity, and making gas runs for those in need.

“This crisis has brought out some of the best I have seen in people,” he shared on a Facebook post.

ComEd had more than 700 crews of 1,900 employees and contractors working to restore power to more than 60% of their customers affected by the extreme weather.

With “pockets of devastation” throughout Whiteside County, the company had crews working around the clock to assist with restoration.

In Cordova, trees fell across Rt. 84, the railroad tracks, and on to village infrastructure near the Shamrock Villas.

Mayor Jim Boone and trustee Della Scott were out with Public Works crews after the storm, with power tools in hand.

Cordova residents were luckier than most, with limited outages in town. Rural households had to wait a bit longer to have services restored, with power coming back on Thursday for many outside of the

village.

As the outages dragged on, Rapids City officials offered sandwiches and chips to residents without power during a drive-by pick-up at Shuler’s Shady Grove park on Wednesday afternoon.

Village President Harold Mire Jr. said it was “all about taking care of your community.”

As of Friday, some areas of Rapids City were still without power though village officials were working with the power company.

“We want to thank all of the employees at MidAmerican Energy for their night and day efforts in restoring power to all residents in the area,” said Mire.

Most residents of Port Byron had their power restored within a day of the storm, though those outside of town had to wait up to 60 hours.

Members of the fire department were busy after the storm passed, responding to trees on the road and accidents on I-80 and I-88.

Hillsdale was spared from the brunt of widespread tree damage, but the power grid was knocked out and wasn’t restored until Wednesday afternoon.

Prime Steakhouse, which has been closed since the March lockdowns began, had to push back their reopening date another night.

WHITESIDE COUNTY Coroner: Whiteside County Jail inmate hanged himself

A 50-year-old Whiteside County jail inmate found unresponsive in his cell Aug. 10 hanged himself, Coroner Joe McDonald said on Friday.

Michael Kinison, of Sterling, was found during a routine check at 7 p.m. Monday. Whiteside County sheriff’s deputies and Morrison Fire Department provided medical assistance, to no avail.

An investigation into the events surrounding his death continues, Sgt. Charles Davidson of the Illinois State Michael Police Division of Kinison Criminal Investigation said in an email The ISP investigates other law enforcement agencies when the need arises.

Kinison was charged with arson and was being held on $25,000 bond; investigators say he set fire to a garage in Rock Falls on July 17.

$5,000 available for low-income households that owe back rent The Illinois Housing Development Authority’s Emergency Rental Assistance Program provides eligible renters affected by the coronavirus $5,000 for back rent or prepay.

Funds are available through December, or until they run out.

Applications are due by Dec. 21 and must be filled out online at era.ihda.org.

To be eligible, household income must be at or below 80% of the area median income.

The tenant must have an unpaid rent balance that began on or after March 1 because of a loss of income related to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Landlords also must submit documentation for the tenant application.

URICRA cancels fall season The Upper Rock Island County Recreation Association has canceled all sports for the fall season due to COVID-19 and health department and CDC restrictions.

Board members voted to cancel all fall sports last week, despite remaining hopeful that they could plan for at least one sports season in 2020. All spring and summer activities were already canceled.

“Dorrance Park will be unusually quiet.

2020 has been a challenging year for many and we want just as badly as you all to get back to some sort of normalcy,” URICRA president Bobbie Jenkins stated.

Registration money that was held from spring soccer for fall soccer will be refunded soon.

RAPIDS CITY

BY SARAH FORD For Shaw Media After nearly a year of planning, grant-writing, and preparation of the site, an outdoor wellness center is ready for users in Rapids City.

The new equipment was recently installed right off the Great River Trail, in the cool shade of a grove of trees. The wellness equipment includes a balance board, body curl station, cardio walker, and a lat pulldown.

Trustee Richard Robertson, chairman of the Parks and Recreation Committee, said the exercise equip-

ment is geared for adults. He hopes those enjoying the bike path, as well as residents of the village, will take advantage of the wellness center.

Total cost for the equipment was $9,900, with $6,300 paid for by an Illinois Department of Natural Resources OSLAD grant. The village provided the rest of the funds, plus labor, concrete, and mulch.

The yellow Fix-It bicycle station, situated nearby in the parking lot, is a service for bicyclists on the trail. It includes an air pump for tires, plus tools to perform basic bike repairs and maintenance such as adjusting brakes and derailleurs,

the mecahnism needed to shift gears.

The tools are attached securely to the standon tamper-proof fasteners.

The village paid for the station as a service to the many riders who bike through the community.

Shuler’s Shady Grove is located at 1st Avenue and11th Street in Rapids City. Park amenities also include a boat rampand parking lot, a gazebo and scenic overlook, and nearby restrooms.

Kenneth “Corky” Bierman, 82, of Fulton, died Tuesday, August 11, 2020, at Resthave Home in Morrison.

A graveside service was held at 10:30 a.m., Saturday, Aug. 15, at Grove Hill Cemetery in Morrison with Rev. Kevin VerHoeven, pastor of Bethel Christian Reformed Church in Fulton, officiating.

A visitation was held from 4 to 7 p.m.

Friday, Aug. 14, at the Morrison Chapel of the Bosma-Renkes Funeral Home.

Don was born Sept.

22, 1929 in Portland Township, Whiteside County, to Hollis and Ellen (Bensenberg) Brooks. He married Kathleen Thompson on Nov. 4, 1950. Don served honorably in the US Army.

He farmed, moving on the farm in 1974, and was a janitor at Riverdale Schools. He was a member of the Erie Rotary Club, Hillsdale American Legion Post 1144, and the Hillsdale Elevator Board. He enjoyed music, dancing, and traveling to Ft. Myers, Florida.

Don is survived by his sons, Danny “Bubba” (Theresa) Brooks, David (Pamela) Brooks; sister, Betty Lou Moeller; grandchildren, Brandon (Ranee Misfeldt) Brooks, Tony (Erin) Brooks, Kassandra (Samuel) Melton; great grandchildren, Chance Brooks, Kaleb Brooks, Ian Brooks, Ivy Brooks, Lillian and Henry Misfeldt; many other nieces, nephews, and cousins, including Jerry and Linda Schneider, Jim Schneider, Gene and Joy McCord, Mike and Cathy Moeller, Diane Bass; and special friend, Anna Wright.

WENDELL J. COOK

Wendell J. Cook, 86, formerly of the area, died July 2, 2020 in Poland, Indiana.

Visitation was on Tuesday Aug. 18, from 1 to 3 p.m. at the Jones Funeral Home in Dixon with a scripture service at 3 p.m. Burial of Wendell’s and his brother Harold Wayne’s cremains will follow at Sacred Heart Cemetery in Sterling. Face coverings required at services.

He was born Nov. 28, 1934 in Walnut, the son of Harold and Marie (Hermes) Cook. He had been a machinist at Micro Gear in Prophetstown prior to his retirement.

Wendell was also a musician and played with several local musicians and bands. He is a veteran of the US Army.

Wendell loved to hunt and fish and was a member of the gun club in Morrison.

He was preceded in death by a daughter Wendy Taylor, his parents Harold and Marie, step father Earl Harney, and brother Harold Wayne Cook.

Wendell is survived by his daughter Dawn Cook of Poland, Indiana, his son Darlow Cook of Sterling, four grandchildren, his sister Charlotte (Russ) Spratt, his brother Lauren (Susan) Cook, both of Dixon and several nieces and nephews.

FRANCES CROSSMAN

Frances M. (Johnson) Crossman, a beloved wife, mother, grandmother, and great grandmother, passed away peacefully in her sleep at 6 a.m. on May 12, 2020 due to complications of Covid-19.

She died at North Memorial Hospital in Robbinsdale, Minnesota. She resided in Rose Arbor Assisted

Living in Maple Grove, Minnesota where she was loved by the staff and shared a friendship with her roommate Roberta Burns who passed Saturday, May 9, 2020 in North Memorial Hospital just doors away from Frances.

The friendship they shared as roommates, and best friends was special and gave Fran great joy in her in the last five years.

They shared playing cards, gardening in raised flower beds, movies and enjoying their friendship.

Frances was born on Nov. 29, 1937, to Melvin and Vernetta Johnson who has preceded her in death and three sisters Velma Buhlman, Ruth Johnson, and Lois Pilgrim survives her.

She married Richard Crossman on Nov. 4, 1965 and had two girls Jan preceded her in death in 2011 and Renee and son-in-law Tim Thompson (married name Rey Thompson in 2017.)

Fran married her soulmate and they remained married until 1999 when Richard passed.

They enjoyed vacationing, gardening, cards, family, laughter, and a love they showed everyday to each other that gave joy to all who knew them.

Fran gave of herself always and always a smile on her face.

Frances was proud of her four grandchildren that survives her: Kendra Hull, Keshia and Shannon Smith, Keirra and Nick Crocker, and Jamie and Aaron Crossman. As well as blessed with seven great grandchildren: Isabelle, Isaac, Astrid, Avery, Kenley, Ella, and Owen that survives her.

Memorial Services were held Aug. 15, at Lyndon Cemetery, Lyndon. She will lay to rest with Richard Crossman to be reunited in earth as in heaven.

Rey has created a forever garden in memory of Frances Crossman. This can be found at Rey and Tim’s home 29995 Norelius Dr, Lindstrom, MN 55045, we will be accepting cards at this address as well.

The garden is filled with perennial flowers to create the forever garden.

You may donate perennials to be planted in her garden, cash donations will be split between Minnesota for Covid-19 Virus Researching vaccinations and towards the girls coming to Minnesota to visit their Grandma’s Forever Garden.

FLORENCE M. KUEBEL Florence M. “Toots” Kuebel, 93 passed away August 9, 2020 in her home surrounded by her loving family.

Private Mass of Christian burial was Wednesday, Aug. 12 at 11 a.m. in Our Lady of Perpetual Help Church, Sublette.

Rev. Randy Fronek officiated. Burial followed in St. Mary’s Cemetery, Sublette.

Visitation was Tuesday, Aug. 11 from 4-7 p.m. in Wasmer Funeral Home, Mendota.

Florence was born Sept. 30, 1926 in Mendota to Martin and Elizabeth (Kratz) Spitz. She married Charles G. Kuebel on May 27, 1947 at Holy Cross Church, Mendota.

During her work career Toots was a clerk and stocker for the National Tea Grocery Store.

After marriage, she was the consummate Farm Wife. She volunteered at Mendota Community Hospital as a “Pink Lady” for 25+ years was a member of Our Lady of Perpetual Church, and helped at the church for funeral dinners.

Florence is survived by her husband of 73 years Charles; two sons: Bernard (Kathy) Kuebel of Peru, and Tony (Kathy) Kuebel of Fulton; two daughters: Cheryl (Tom) Nauman of Amboy, and Patsy (John) Marks of Earlville; 16 grandchildren and 30 great-grandchildren; and three sisters: Catherine Taylor of Mendota, Carlene Schuhler of Sublette, and Rita Jones of Mendota.

She was preceded in death by her parents, four brothers: Leo Spitz, Al Spitz, Martin Spitz, and Delbert Spitz, and two sisters: Estelle Hines and Delores Brandt.

Pallbearers were grandchildren: Aaron Kuebel, Matt Kuebel, Ben Kuebel, Jared Kuebel, Jennifer Lewis, Johnny Marks, Cody Marks, Casey Marks and Jesse Nauman.

Memorials may be directed to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital.

Becky McLuckie, 52, of Fulton, died Wednesday, August 12, 2020 at her home.

A private family funeral service is planned, officiated by Rev. Laura Wessels, pastor at Rainbow Hospice Care in Waupun, Wisconsin.

There will be a visitation from 3 – 7 p.m. on Wednesday, Aug. 19, at the Fulton Chapel of the Bosma-Renkes Funeral Home.

There is also a public graveside service at 11 a.m. Thursday, Aug. 20 at the Fulton Township Cemetery.

Memorials have been established for a Scholarship Program for Fulton Track and to the Serenity Hospice.

“Beautiful Becky” as referred to by the special man in her life, was born February 1, 1968 in Clinton, Iowa, to Gene and Margaret (Smith) Pessman.

She was educated in the Garden Plain Grade School and Albany Jr. High School, and graduated from Fulton High School.

She went on to graduate from the American Institute of Commerce in

Davenport, Iowa, with a major in Merchandising.

She was employed at Medical Equipment Services in Clinton, Iowa.

During high school she was a member of the chorus and was a cheerleader.

She was also a member of the Garden Plain Ripsnorters 4-H Group.

She was very active in her boys’ lives, attending their sporting events, school activities and volunteering for numerous school functions. She enjoyed gardening and landscaping and was a big animal lover.

She was especially fond of horses, dogs and cattle, which she showed during 4-H. Becky, along with her fiancé Scott, enjoyed going to concerts, musicals and plays.

She was a very good friend to many, always available and willing to listen.

The best word to describe Becky would be “selfless”.

Survivors include two sons, Kyle (Payton Roling) McLuckie of Clinton, Iowa and Nathan McLuckie of Fulton; fiancé, Scott Price of Fulton; two step sons, Devon Ballard and Ethan Price; one step daughter, Jordan Price; her parents, Gene and Margaret Pessman of Fulton;

On Aug. 8, at approximately 11:28 p.m., an Illinois State Police (ISP) Trooper stopped a vehicle for speeding and improper lane usage on IL-78 southbound at Rock Road. During the traffic stop investigation, the Trooper learned the driver, Bransen J. Rosenow, 22-year old male of Port Byron, did not have valid insurance.

Rosenow was arrested and charged with driving under the influence of alcohol, driving under the influence of alcohol with an alcohol concentration of 0.08 or more, driving an uninsured motor vehicle, speeding, and improper lane usage. Rosenow was released on a recognizance bond. There is no further information is available.

Thomas O. Stoudt, 80, of Erie, died Friday, August 14, 2020 at his home.

Thomas Osborne Stoudt was born Oct. 10, 1939 in Bell, California, the son of Uhlan and Marjorie (Hendricks) Stoudt.

He was educated in the Erie Schools and graduated from Erie High School in the class of 1958. In 1959 Tom joined the U.S. Air Force where he served honorably until his retirement

in May of 1979. He then went to work at the Rock Island Arsenal as a Lathe Machinist where he retired in 1993.

Following his career with the government, he drove school bus for the Erie Schools for nearly 20 years until he reached the age of 75.

Tom married Sharon Border on April 25, 1969 in Erie, and shared 51 years with her.

Tom was one of four men who began the Erie RC Club in 1980 and served as the Secretary / Treasurer for several years. He was a member of the Denton-Schreiner American Legion Post 582.

He is survived by his wife, Sharon; three sons and several grandchildren; brothers and sisters-in-law, Beth and Clyde Kramer, Erie, Lynn and Donna Border, Morrison, Lauren and Cindy Border, Iowa, Wanda and Mike Keegan, Fenton; and many nieces and nephews.He was preceded in death by his parents; sister, Carole; brother and sister-in-law, Kent and Carol Border; and great nephew, Todd Givens.

Festival will showcase short films at area drive-in Midway Drive-In to show films by Illinois documentarians

BY ERIC INGLES Shaw Media STERLING – A film festival initially slated to take place over two days in Rockford, the Quad Cities and at Sauk Valley Community College will have a different and more streamlined look thanks to COVID19.

The Northwest Illinois Film Festival inaugural Shorts-A-Palooza will be held at Midway Drive-in, 91 Palmyra Road, and will feature Moline filmmakers Kelly and Tammy Rundle’s Fourth Wall Film documentaries “A Bridge Too Far From Hero Street” and “Riding the Rails to Hero Street.”

Justin Jackola, who filmed “Hunter’s Creed” in Savanna, also will show his trailer for the film, for which distribution is set to begin within a few months.

“A Bridge Too Far from Hero

Street” tells the story of World War II paratrooper William “Willie” Sandoval’s involvement in the largest air assault in history.

The film’s companion piece, “Riding the Rails to Hero Street” explores immigrants’ journeys from Mexico to the Quad Cities in segregated communities known as Cook’s Point in Davenport, Holy City in Bettendorf, and the Chicago, Rock Island and Pacific Railroad train yard in Silvis.

The families of Hero Street experienced both acceptance and discrimination in their new community, around the time of the Great Depression, the families were removed from the rail yards and some moved box cars or built new homes on Second Street in Silvis.

Only a block-and-a-half long, Second Street (renamed Hero Street, USA) in Silvis lost six young men in World War II and two in the Korean War, more than any other street in America.

Hero Street has also provided nearly 200 service members since Mexican-American immigrants settled there in 1929, and the Rundles’ multipart documentary project is

Methicillin-Resistant Staphylococcus Aureus

BY STEPHEN D. HARRISON, M.D. MRSA is a bacterial infection that is resistant staphylococcus.

It is part of a growing number of bacterial that have mutated over the years and cannot be killed by many different kinds of antibiotics.

This bacteria sometime takes over many parts of the body and is a major concern for caregivers in the hospital and otherwise.

It is hard to treat but very contagious.

Formerly it was confined to the hospital and now more people are getting MRSA outside of the hospital. Some people fee that the condition has grown because of inappropriate use of antibiotics leading to their resistance.

Many healthy people including caregivers have staph bacteria on their bodies and don’t even know it.

It is, in fact, commonly found on the skin and nose. MRSA itself, which is a type of staph infection,

may also be found on these places.

If you do not have any signs or symptoms of infection, this is called colonization. With this type of colonization you may pass the organism on to others who are more susceptible even though you may not have been ill.

Anyone can get MRSA even if they have not been sick or in the hospital, although it is an opportunistic organism.

As such, those at highest risk include those who have been significantly ill in the hospital with more intense conditions, been in contact with those who have MRSA, live in long-term care facilities such as nursing homes, are on dialysis or have severe diabetes or have tubes going into the body, especially a tube that drains urine.

Also hardware, metal implants are a risk for harboring MRSA organisms.

Antibiotics especially when inappropriately used may increase the risk for MRSA. MRSA can even

enter through a basic cut in the skin.

The only way to know if you have MRSA is if your caregiver does a culture. This is done by collecting drainage or tissue from the infected area.

Occasionally blood may be drawn to see if this is in the bloodstream.

Unfortunately, once the condition is acquired it may be quite difficult to get rid of as there are very few antibiotics that an attack this effectively.

In fact, most of the times that MRSA is present, your doctor will simply employ other supportive measures unless your infection is fairly extreme.

Meanwhile, like its hospital counterpart, VRE, contact precautions may be employed in which caregivers entering the room wear gloves, gown and mask and the patient remains isolated in a private room or with another patient who has MRSA. Visitors are generally allowed but must have the same precautions.

Careful hand is essential for 15 to

20 seconds with warm, soapy water with antibacterial soap such as germ-killing hand cleaner may also be employed.

For some MRSA infections, fluid may need to be drained out of a given area in the body or even surgery to remove hardware that has become infected.

As with most conditions, prevention remains the cornerstone. Careful hand washing is essential and this basic process cannot be emphasized enough.

Appropriate antibiotic use including use in the general community and not employing antibiotics when they are not essential and by taking them to their completion is also part of the way to keep down the overall resistance of organisms.

The public should not be misled to think that we can conquer these devastating illnesses like MRSA by developing new antibiotics.

Our researchers tell s that this is not a particularly effective way.
