BY SARAH FORD For Shaw Media TAMPICO - For the Mitchell family, August is the month of melons. For 50 years, they’ve been raising and selling the sweet and juicy crops, making Mitchell Melons a rural destination during the brief but bounteous harvest.

With fresh from the field watermelon, cantaloupe, and sensations (a variety of cantaloupe), the Mitchells have created a niche market that draws in daily visitors to the farm. The hope is for a 40-day selling season, or at least through Labor Day. “We always set goals, even if we’re not sure we can make it,”says farmer Doug Mitchell. The Mitchells also grow corn and soybeans on their rural acreage, but “melons are our livestock,” he adds.

He credits his dedicated workforce for the season’s success. This year, he’s had a small crew of college students to help out in the fields. “They are phenomenal. My job is a whole lot easier if I have good people working hard,” he states, noting that labor is always a limiting factor for farm work.

From start to finish, growing melons is “labor intensive” and always dependent on the weather. Midwestern summers and marketing are the biggest challenges during the brief season, says Mitchell. But no matter the challenges,the Tampico farm is a bustling destination when the melons are ripe, withtractors hauling crates of the fruits, and customers circling the driveway to pullup and make their purchases.

He also credits the season’s success to

the five generations of family members that devote many hours of their August to the various tasks.

The youngest is his granddaughter Laken, who at 1 years old makes her presence known on the farm with smiles and laughter.

Donna Crowe, a longtime friend of his mother’s, is also at the farm “from daylight to dark” during the season to greet and talk to customers. The family members each devote their time and energy to making the days go by smoothly.

There’s something special about getting melons straight from the farm, though there are other ways to enjoy the fruits of the Mitchells’ labors. They

offer both wholesale and retail sales, booths at country markets,as well as deliveries within an 80-mile radius.

Shaw’s Marketplace in Prophetstown, Sullivan’s Foods, and Fareway in Geneseo carry the melon varieties.

Mitchell Melons will be mixing it up this weekend and trying something new for the first time. Cows (Coffee on Wheels) will be set up at the melon farm from 9 a.m. – 1 p.m., selling a variety of summer drinks while supplies last.

Mitchell Melons is located at 5549 Luther Rd. Tampico. Seasonal hours are 8 a.m. – 7 p.m. seven days a week.

The watermelon and sensations cost$5 at the farm, and the cantaloupe is $4.

Fulton High School students to attend remotely STAFF REPORT news@saukvalley.com Citing a rise in Whiteside County COVID-19 cases, about a quarter of which are in the Fulton ZIP code, the River Bend School District is requiring its high school students attend remotely when school starts, with optional building times for those who want one-on-one teaching support.

According to the district website, preschoolers through eighth-graders will start school Aug. 19 by attending 2 in-person days, based on their last names, and 2 days remotely.

Masks and social distancing will be employed, and temperatures will be taken.

The district will provide a mask for all students and staff, but they also will be allowed to wear their own masks as long as they meet the standards of personal protective equipment.

Anyone who refuses to wear a mask will not be permitted to enter school buildings, the board said.

Students and staff who can’t tolerate masks for health reasons — claustrophobia, post-traumatic stress disorder, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease — may be allowed to use face shields.

Children who ride the bus will have their temperatures taken before they are allowed to ride, and

The district has 10% of the county’s population but 25% of its COVID cases, and two teachers who were exposed to positive cases were quarantined.

If cases continue to rise, all students may return to learning remotely, Superintendent Darryl Hogue told the school board, the Clinton Herald reported.

Case studies suggest that children younger than 9 don’t spread the disease, Whiteside County Health Department Administrator Cheryl Lee told the board.

Lee suggests that teachers stay at the front of the room and stay with the same group of students each day.

She also suggested giving students additional time for bathroom breaks and periodic breaks from wearing masks, requiring social distancing during those times.

Most of the rise in cases are in 20- to 29-year-olds, who tend to have mild or no symptoms, don’t stay home, and to go out while sick, spreading the virus, Lee said.

If everyone else is wearing a mask, and if students are social distancing, a few with other kinds of face coverings will still be safe.

“It’s not just one thing. ... It’s a combination,” said Lee. “Most kids, if they get it, are going to be OK.”

Morrison Cub Scout Pack to hold a recruitment event Morrison Cub Scout Pack 328 will hold a community recruitment event on Thursday, Aug. 13, from 6 to 7:30 p.m., at French Creek Park in

Morrison.

All boys and girls entering kindergarten through fifth grade are encouraged to bring a parent to the

event to learn more about joining the program.

Pack leadership will be available to answer questions about the program and assist with registration.

The event will include a bike rodeo and rank advancement ceremony, honoring returning Scouts for their achievements during the spring and summer.

Youth should bring a bicycle and helmet; all attendees must wear a mask and practice social distancing.

BY SARAH FORD For Shaw Media Port Byron trustees approved a TIF agreement for Happy Pawz Playground, a dog daycare and grooming business, on Aug. 3.

Groundbreaking for the building started July 22.

The development agreement gives owners Amy and Guy Newberry an initial upfront payment of $12,500 after the building is completed and inspected.

Since the TIF district expires in 7 years, the board approved the payment in order to meet the timeline for distributing the TIF funds.

Based on the tax assessment, the Newberrys could receive up to $46,650 in TIF funds for the business.

The village reimburses 90% of tax bills paid by businesses with TIF agreements for 10 years.

The building, currently under construction at 308 S. Main Street, will be 4,000 square feet and is expected to be open in late summer or early fall.

The board also discussed the recent Sheriff’s sale of the house at 305 N. High Street.

Mayor Bruce Peterson said the bank bought the building, but he encouraged the board to consider purchasing the two and a half lots

for future development.

Trustees weren’t sold on the idea, with Dustin Sloan estimating $40,000 or more in expenses to tear the building down and prepare the lot for market.

Patti Lindley said the village shouldn’t be in the business of buying and selling property.

Peterson said he would like to look into it more so the board could be “informed of the options.”

The board also approved a 2% raise for licensed water operator Kevin Farrall, effective April 1, per his contract with the village.

They gave approval to joining the Mississippi River Towns Initiative.

Peterson notified the board that IDOT will provide an additional $211,000 in funding for the Rte. 84 sidewalk project, bringing the total amount awarded to $1,614,500.

The project is expected to begin next year.

The board also discussed the plumbing issue which flooded the village hall earlier that day, with Werner Construction called in to help with the clean-up.

The damage claims will be submitted to the insurance company.

The Village Hall is currently closed due to the ongoing repairs from the water damage.

Duey’s Corner Tap in Port Byron brought a little TugFest atmosphere to Port Byron on Saturday. Visitors were greeted with great food and great weather.

Compared to years’ past, it was a quiet weekend in Port Byron, with diners, bikers, and boaters enjoying the downtown.

Typically TugFest weekend, the annual festival draws thousands to the riverfront every summer with fair food, a carnival, fireworks, and a tug-of-war across the Mississippi River with rival LeClaire.

The laid-back downtown scene was a reminder of the impact of COVID19, as the festival was canceled this year due to safety concerns.

But that didn’t stop Duey’s Corner Tap at 102 Main Street from trying to bring a little festival atmosphere to the town on Saturday.

Owner Kevin Kernan and his staff set aside Saturday afternoon to sell fair food such as corn dogs, grilled pork chops, hamburgers and cheeseburgers, smoked brisket, funnel cake fries, fried Oreos, and lemon

shake-ups.

He also set up his BBQ smoker outside the business, just for the aromatic smoke effect.

“It simulates the fun,” he said, as the scents wafted through the air.

Though Tug Fest is the busiest weekend for the downtown food and drink establishments, it was understandable, though disappointing, that the event was canceled.

“It would’ve been rough, with all the safety regulations. It’s a blessing it’s not happening,” Kernan said.

Customers kept his business busy on Saturday, with the lemonade shake-ups and much of the fair food selling out.

The weather was perfect for the outdoor dining experience under the tent and umbrellas set up outside the business. “It gives the locals a little bit of business and keeps it rolling,” Kevin added.

Tug Fest 2021 is scheduled for Aug. 12 – 14.

River Cities Rotary adopts Port Byron garden

The River Cities Rotary Club has adopted the garden and walkway along the Mississippi River in Port Byron as one of their community service projects.

The garden, which was installed nearly a decade ago with a grant from River Action, is along the bike trail and across from Sandstrom’s Products on Main Street.

On Monday, Aug. 3, a dozen members of the club spent nearly two hours at the garden tackling the weeds, with eight large piles by the time they finished.

Rotarian Sue Hebel said the club will also be adding literature to the display cases and will work with the Quad City Botanical Center to bring in more native plants.

Rotarian Steve Dickhut made the proposal to sponsor the garden, with Port Byron Mayor Bruce Peterson, also a Rotarian, encouraging the project. “I sincerely thank them for taking the village garden as one of their service projects,” he said.

The club has been meeting virtually every Tuesday at 7:15 a.m. until it’s safe to resume in-person meetings at the Brothers Family Restaurant in Rapids City again.

CAREER AND TECHNICAL EDUCATION

Sauk Valley Community College, has been awarded $66,468 in grant funding to support its continued improvement and innovation of Career and Technical Education (CTE) programming.

The college will develop a 3-tiered mentorship program for faculty that progresses from initial employment through retirement. The mentorship program aims to improve faculty retention and engagement.

“Sauk receiving this grant is a testament to the quality of our career and technical programs and our

“This funding will support student success in high need industries, including information technology and education,” said Dr. Brian Durham, executive director of the ICCB. “The grants allow colleges to make a significant investment in advising, coaching, and mentoring CTE faculty and students, at a

time when the need for a connection between teachers and students is paramount.”

Statewide, 21 community colleges received nearly $1.7 million in CTE Improvement Grant funds in 2020.

Grant recipients can use the funds one of three ways: enhance student transitions, provide student-centered support services, or strengthen the CTE educator pipeline.

CTE grants are funded through the federal Strengthening Career and Technical Education for the 21st Century Act.

Starting Monday, Aug. 10, SVCC students will have the opportunity to receive grants that will assist in paying for internet access and service. Students are encouraged to check their SVCC email for details on how to apply for these grants. Over $160,000 is available to help students pay for internet costs related to their SVCC education.

OBITUARIES JAMES V. BRITT, SR. James V. Britt, Sr., 92, passed away Saturday, August 1, 2020 at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics in Iowa City, Iowa.

Cremation rites have been accorded. There will be no visitation or funeral service at this time. A Celebration of Life will be held at a later date.

The Morrison Chapel of the Bosma-Renkes Funeral Home assisted with arrangements.

A memorial has been established for the Morrison American Legion Post #328.

Jim was born Feb. 12, 1928 in Clinton, Iowa, to E. Gwendolyn (Ransom) and Vincent J. Britt.

He attended Fulton schools, graduating in 1946. Jim joined the U.S. Navy in 1946 during WWII, and proudly served his country.

He was especially proud of his service aboard the Battleship Iowa BB61, and was a member of the USS Iowa Veteran’s Association.

He retired from Northwestern Steel & Wire Co. on Jan. 1, 1989, after 36 ½ years as a crane operator. He also farmed 17 years in the Garden Plain, Sterling and Morrison areas.

Jim and Susan J. Black were married on February 28, 1957. Together they owned several businesses in Morrison, including Suz Video.

He was a life member of the American Legion and VFW, and also a former commander of the Morrison VFW Post. Jim

was a NASCAR fan, and loved old John Wayne movies.

Jim is survived by his wife, Sue; seven children, Mary Jo Hunter of Sterling, James Jr. (Jan) of Markesan, Wisconsin, Michael (Ann) of Morrison, John of Morrison, Sheri (Jerry) Kuiper of Oshkosh, Wisconsin, Ann (Mike) Mattera of Hillsboro, Oregon, and Terry (Judy) of West Chicago.

There are 15 grandchildren, many great-grandchildren, several great-great-grandchildren, and also nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; a sister; one grandson, Chris Hunter; a son-in-law, Don Hunter; a great-grandson, Nathan Britt.

Linda Lee Harrington, 72, of Port Byron, died unexpectedly Saturday evening, August 8, 2020 at Genesis Health Center, Illini, Silvis.

Visitation will be from 4 – 7 p.m. on Wednesday, Aug. 12, at Gibson – Bode Funeral Home, Erie.

For the safety of Linda’s family and those in attendance, please wear a face covering and observe social distancing.

Linda married Charles D. Harrington on Oct. 19, 1968 in Virginia. Linda worked as receptionist for the Blood Center. Linda enjoyed crafts, rubber stamping and working with her Cricut machine.

Linda was a pet lover of dogs and cats.Linda took an interest in genealogy and enjoyed using Facebook to keep in touch with her family and friends.

Linda is survived by her husband, Charles; children, Chuck Jr. (Teresa) Harrington, Davenport, Iowa; Missi (Jeff) Lambert, Erie; four grandchildren, Kristopher Lambert, Taylor (Chris) Persell, Cannon (Chloe) Lambert, Lane Harrington; great grandchildren, Jayden and Kennedy Persell; and brother, Craig (Cheryl) Meckling, Maryland.

DANIEL L. JOHNSON Daniel L. “Chief” Johnson, (USAF Ret.) 84, of Port Byron, died Saturday, August 8, 2020 at his home.

Mass of Christian Burial was held at 10:30 a.m. on Wednesday, Aug. 12, at St. John’s Catholic Church, Rapids City. Visitation was held 5–7 p.m. with a Christian Prayer Service at 4 p.m. on Tuesday at Gibson– Bode Funeral Home, Port Byron.

Burial will be in the Rock Island National Cemetery.

He graduated from Visitation Catholic School and Wethersfield High School.

He married Colette Wilson in 1956. She died in 1978.

Daniel married Linda J. Coe on June 22, 1985 in Colona. He served honorably in the US Air Force as an Aircraft Loadmaster from 1952 until he retired in 1995

as a Chief Master Sergeant (E-9).

During this period, he attended the University of Maryland and the University of Oklahoma.

Following service, Dan was employed with the US Army Armament, Munitions & Chemical Command (AMCCOM) as a Maintenance Management Supervisor at the Arsenal.

He later became an owner/operator trucker, and finally did popcorn farming with Linda.

He was a Coe Township Trustee and later supervisor, served as President of the St. John’s Parish Council, was a Eucharistic Minister and Lector at St. Johns, trustee and President of Our Lady of Grace Education Commission, and three-time member of Alleman High School Board.

Dan was a life member of the CoeLamb American Legion, Vietnam Veterans Association, Professional Loadmaster Association, Air Force Sergeant’s Association, and the Air Force Association.

He enjoyed the company of military veterans and his wife, Linda, and was very appreciative of Linda’s loving care during his periods of severe illness.

USDA positions new team to better serve beginning farmers and ranchers

The U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) is starting up a new team that will lead a department-wide effort focused on serving beginning farmers and ranchers.

To institutionalize support for beginning farmers and ranchers and to build upon prior agency work, the 2018 Farm Bill directed USDA to create a national coordinator position in the agency and state-level coordinators for four of its agencies – Farm Service Agency (FSA), Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS), Risk Management Agency (RMA), and Rural Development (RD).

Crystal Zwilling was selected as the USDA Beginning Farmer Rancher state coordinator in Illinois.

For the past 10 years Zwilling has worked at FSA, assisting Illinois farmers and ranchers as a Program Technician, a Farm Loan Officer and now as a Farm Loan Specialist in the Illinois FSA state office.

She looks forward to this great opportunity of assisting farmers and ranchers in her new position as the USDA Beginning Farmer and Rancher state coordinator.

Each state coordinator will receive training and develop tailored beginning farmer outreach plans for their

state. Coordinators will help field employees better reach and serve beginning farmers and ranchers and will also be available to assist beginning farmers who need help navigating the variety of resources USDA has to offer.

More on Beginning Farmers Twenty-seven percent of farmers were categorized as new and beginning producers, with 10 years or less of experience in agriculture, according to the 2017 Census of Agriculture. USDA offers a variety of farm loan, risk management, disaster assistance, and conserva-

tion programs to support farmers, including beginning farmers and ranchers. Additionally, a number of these programs have provisions specifically for beginning farmers, including targeted funding for loans and conservation programs as well as waivers and exemptions.

IN BRIEF USDA extends crop insurance premium deadlines USDA has extended crop insurance payment deadlines and deferred interest accrual for farmers through Approved Insurance Providers (AIPs) due to COVID-19 impact.

Specifically, USDA has authorized AIPs to provide policyholders additional time to pay premium and administrative fees.

Accrual of interest will be waived to the earlier of 60 days after their scheduled payment due date or the termination date on policies with premium billing dates between Aug. 1 and Sept. 30.

“USDA recognizes farmers and ranchers have been severely affected by the COVID-19 Pandemic this year and to help ease the burden on these folks, we

are continuing to extend flexibility for producers,” said U.S. Secretary of Agriculture Sonny Perdue. “The flexibilities announced today support health and safety while also ensuring the Federal crop insurance program continues to serve as a vital risk management tool.”

USDA has further authorized AIPs to provide up to an additional 60 days for policyholders to make payment and waive additional interest for Written Payment Agreements due between Aug. 1 and Sept. 30.

Higher-than-normal rainfall levels continued recently in Illinois, and it appears the corn and soybean crops aren’t complaining.

Statewide, USDA’s weekly crop progress report released recently showed more than double the normal amount of moisture fell — 1.89 inches, compared with the average of 0.75 inches. Locally, some fields got even bigger drinks.

FarmWeek CropWatcher Doug Uphoff said 8.3 inches fell on his farm in Shelby County in the past 30 days.

“Four of those inches were in the last week,” Uphoff told the RFD Radio Network® on Aug. 3. “Actually, things look pretty well. I know farmers probably don’t want me to say that because markets are low enough the way they are, but things

look pretty well.”

The moisture has translated into positive crop conditions, with 76% of both corn and soybeans rated in the good or excellent categories.

Nearly all of the state’s corn (96%) is silking, ahead of the fiveyear average of 92%.

Crops are tracking just behind normal in other growth stage milestones, including: Corn in the dough stage: 43% compared with 47% average pace.

Soybeans blooming: 78%, compared with 84% average pace.

Soybeans setting pods: 52%, compared with 55% average pace.

Meanwhile, alfalfa farmers are 90% finished with their second cutting and 26% finished with their third.

Uphoff noted that farmers will need all the bushels they can get to compensate for low demand.

COVID-19 testing at Mount Carroll middle school The Carroll County Health Department, Carroll County Emergency Management Agency and the Illinois Department of Health have partnered to offer additional testing for COVID-19.

Tests will be offered Tuesday,

Aug. 11 and Thursday, Aug. 13 from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. at West Carroll Middle School, 633 East St. Those times may be rescheduled due to inclement weather.

No appointment is needed, but participants must remain in their vehicles, wear a mask and present a valid photo ID. Those 18 and younger must be accompanied by a parent

or legal guardian present.

Results will be received within 4-7 days via phone communication from the state.

Please note, this test will tell you only if you have the coronavirus as of the date of testing, not if you have had it previously.

New Hours and New Way to Stay Safe and Play The Discovery Center is open adjusted hours and is following a procedure for “a new way to stay safe and play.” Hours are Fridays and Saturdays with a morning play period from 10 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., and an afternoon play period from 2:30 to 5 p.m. The mid-day closure is a time for museum staff to sanitize and disinfect surfaces and to replace toys and costumes. On Sundays, the Discovery Center will be open for an afternoon play period from 1:30 to 4:30 p.m.

Face masks are required for everyone ages two and older. Guests may wear their own masks or they may get one at the Discovery Center. Disposable masks are available for purchase for $1. If cloth masks are preferred, they are available to rent for $1.

Other reopening differences at the Discovery Center include the turning off of drinking fountains for hygiene reasons. Guests are encouraged to bring their own drinking water if desired.

Bottled water will also be available to purchase for $1.

Guests are asked not to bring in food or snacks to be eaten during general playtimes. The only food allowed is for scheduled private parties held inside the closed party rooms.

Also, as a precaution, members of the public who are experiencing fever, cough, shortness of breath, or who have been in close contact with someone who is ill with COVID-19, are asked to not enter the Discovery Center at this time.

The mission of the Felix Adler Children’s Discovery Center is to provide

a safe and positive environment for families to discover the world by exploring arts, culture, literacy and science through educational programs and interactive exhibits. They turn no one away based on inability to pay.

Shopping during the COVID-19 pandemic

BY STEPHEN D. HARRISON, M.D. By now we have been aware of COVID for some time. While the literally mad dash for toilet paper craze has partially abated, we are just now locally starting to experience some of its ravishing impact.

Stores have set up better boundaries for the appropriate social distance aspect.

I had put out a report in the local paper about the strong connection with COVID and the immune system as mediated by our nutrition.

Many people do not realize that our gut is the biggest reservoir in the vast immune network. It is argu-

ably also the first line of defense, although it might get some challenge from the respiratory system or even the skin.

Our senses would also try to get in on this little contest. The problem with COVID is that you can’t see it, taste it, smell it, feel it or hear it. But you can feed it and provide an environment for it to breed.

So, what if I told you that you could use your vision and touch sensations to reduce the likelihood of this virus spreading rampantly.

Imagine this shopping experience, which might have happened in some fashion to which I was either witness or participant.

Early in the experience I commented on how absurd it was to limit people in the store while they congregated in close lines and waited endlessly in a happy breeding ground.

But finally, your moment has come and while you don’t wish to linger, for your own sake as well those still waiting, you still want to scrutinize labels on your food.

After all, this is going to have the single biggest impact to your immune system. So you pick up a box to read the ingredients and find it has some of the toxins in it that you are trying to avoid.

So you naturally wish to put it back. But your partner raises the

reasonable question of how this would all work if everyone read the label and put the box back on the shelf.

Then you realize that generally the only people putting the box back are people who have chosen to eat wisely and not feed the virus with a sugar source or a bunch of unnatural chemicals that weaken the immune system and allow for rampant proliferation.

They are much more likely to be clean and practice safe habits in public and therefore pose minimal risk to those touching the box.

So, I will take my chances with the healthy and read the labels.
