Alpaca ranch reopens to the public

After an extended closure due to the pandemic, Deitricks’ Alpaca Ranch in rural Prophetstown reopened for tours this past weekend, with more in the works for the summer.

Tracy Livesay, granddaughter of Dwight and Wanda Deitrick, owners of Deitricks’ Alpaca Ranch, welcomed guests back to the farm for the first in-person tours this season.

Though the farm team has been busy over the past year with their herd of 62 alpacas, vegetable gardening, corn and bean fields, knitting with alpaca fiber, and other farm chores, the ranch remained closed to the public for safety reasons.

Now that life is returning to normal, Livesay is back to scheduling one-hour tours that offer a glimpse into the daily care of the inquisitive and captivating camelids.

The focus is on alpaca education and the alpaca lifestyle, and young and old are invited to come and learn.

During Friday’s tour, guests got to meet and mingle with the sociable herbivores, which Livesay calls “gentle creatures.”

When temperatures are high like they were, a good portion of the day’s care is spent on cooling them down. Livesay fills up small pools for them to “cush” in, and hoses down their bellies and under their legs to keep them cool. The barn provides shade and a cool reprieve from the heat.

Livesay talks about the ins and outs of keeping a herd of the animals that originate from South America. She provides facts on the history of alpacas, discusses routine care, and talks about their crimpy and silky fleece. They can occasionally be heard “humming,” which they do when happy or nervous. The young are called cria, the females called cows, and the males are bulls. Their average life span is about 20 years.

Alpacas are bred exclusively for their fiber in the United States, with two breeds on the market – Huacaya and Suri. There are 22 colors of alpacas, ranging from white, beige, fawn, brown, black, and gray, plus color combinations.

The fiber is as soft as cashmere, water-repellent, and lighter weight and warmer than sheep’s wool. The Deitricks’ Alpaca Ranch gift shop is on site and is full of hand knit hats, scarves, and other creations, plus skeins of yarn and bags of roving. Everything made from their fiber lists the name of the alpaca that provided it.

The tour is a great excursion for kids, families, Ag enthusiasts, knitters, and anyone craving a country farm experience.

Livesay knows her herd members by name, such as Bright Eyes, Jewel, Crusader, Rocco, Winston, Milkweed, Pepper, and Samson. They eagerly surrounded her as she brought out a hose for the mid-morning

Vera Louis Stutzke, daughter of Henry and Freda Mennenga, was born July 30, 1922, on a farm east of Morrison. She attended McElrath Grade School in Mount Pleasant Township, two miles north of Round Grove. She was a member of th e Mor ris on High School band, where she played saxophone and E-flat alto clarinet. She graduated with the Class of 1940.

Vera was married to Edwin “Bud” Stutzke for 57 years, and they farmed between Sterling and Morrison. Her family

includes her two children, Cheryl Stutzke and Kurt (Elisa) Stutzke; grandchildren Jason Stutzke and Jennifer Stutzke (Jared Haenni); great-grandchildren Jaren, Haele and Kobe; and step-great-grandchildren Aubri, Brian and Donny.

After working 23 years at GE in Morrison, she has traveled extensively with her family throughout the U.S., Canada, France and England. Her favorite national parks include the Grand Canyon, Zion and Trona Pinnacles. Her favorite destinations have been Paris, Bury St.

Edmunds, London, Pie Town, San Francisco, Lake Tahoe and visiting her 97-year-old sister, Marian Swanson, in San Jose.

When she isn’t traveling, she enjoys gardening, watching “Days of Our Lives,” taking care of her cats, riding her golf cart around the farm, napping and spending time with her family and friends.

Dr. Abdul Foad selected for ASES membership

Dr. Abdul Foad, orthopaedic surgeon at Morrison Community Hospital, has been selected as a member of the American Shoulder and Elbow Surgeons.

The elite society, which has only 1,100 members, is made up of the top national and international orthopaedic surgeons who specialize in shoulder and elbow surgeries. Membership is by invitation only. Criteria for membership includes being considered a regional expert in the field of shoulder surgery and continuation of peer-reviewed publications and book chapters on shoulder/elbow topics based on

work in the clinical practice location.

Foad is a board-certified orthopedic surgeon and fellowship trained in sports medicine and arthroscopy. He received his medi- Dr. Abdul Foad cal degree from Penn State University and completed his residency in orthopedic surgery at the University of Texas Medical Branch. He completed his fellowship in sports medicine and

arthroscopy from one of the premier sports medicine fellowship programs in the world at Ulleval Hospital and the International Olympic Trauma and Research Center in Oslo, Norway, where he had the opportunity to work on Olympic and professional athletes.

Despite his busy schedule and practice, he continues to teach residents, medical students and physician-assistant students in a private practice setting. He sits on the Iowa Orthopaedic Research Foundation Board at the University of Iowa, where he mentors residents and medical students in Iowa who are interested in clinical research

in orthopaedic sports medicine. He was president of the Iowa Orthopaedic Society in 2015. He is an active member in good standing and fellow of the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgery, American Orthopaedic Society for Sports Medicine and the Arthroscopy Association of North America.

Foad practices at Morrison Community Hospital in Morrison and Terrace Ridge Medical in Davenport, Iowa. His policy is to see injured patients in a timely fashion, usually the next day, if possible. His motto is “Service with science.” Office appointments can be made by calling 815-772-5505.

First Presbyterian Church of Morrison is dedicating its next free community drive-up meal to benefit the Morrison Fire Department. All donations will go directly to the fire department.

Entertainment announced for 150th Whiteside County Fair MORRISON – The 150th Whiteside County Fair is less than a month away, and another impressive lineup of entertainment is in place that is sure to wow the crowds.

The fair opens Tuesday, Aug. 17, and completes a five-day run on Saturday, Aug. 21. You won’t want to miss it!

The 150th annual fair takes place at the fairgrounds in Morrison.

Tuesday, Aug. 17

Evening entertainment is Pro-Bull Riding starting at 7 p.m. Cheer on these brave cowboys as they prepare to hang on for 8 seconds while their four-legged nemeses try to spoil their plans. Other events to start off the fair are the Western Horse Show at 8 a.m., poultry judging at 10 a.m., Open Swine judging at noon, Kids Tractor Pedal Pull at 2 p.m. and Jr. Swine judging at 4:30 p.m.

Wednesday, Aug. 18

Home Free is on the stage at 7 p.m.

The all-vocal country entertainers have made their mark on the music scene, racking up almost 600,000 album equivalents globally, embarking on major international tours, amassing 399 million views and more than one million subscribers on YouTube, and being declared “country music fans’ favorite a cappella group” by Taste of Country. The Illini State Pullers Association brings in its “souped up” tractors and trucks that will pull sleds and show off the horsepower under the hoods in front of the grandstand at 6:30 p.m. The Antique Tractor Parade will be at 5:30 p.m. At 9 a.m., the Heavy Horse Hitch Classes will be shown in front of the grandstands. The Open Beef Show will be judged at 9 a.m. in the Beef Show Arena. At 1 p.m., the Heavy Horses

come back as they thunder in front of the grandstand with the Big 6 Horse and Unicorn Hitches.

Saturday, Aug. 21

At 6:30 p.m., the car-crushing, adrenaline-pumping, smoke-filled Demolition Derby will finish off the five days of crowd-pleasing entertainment. Horses are at the post as harness racing is on the track at 1 p.m. Other events are a Kids Tractor Pedal Pull at 11 a.m. and a wood carving auction at 4 p.m.

The Mega Band is back again this year, and the Wilson Family Show will

entertain fairgoers with its carnival and midway attractions. Patrons can ride unlimited rides every day of the fair for $50 (if purchased in advance the week before the fair at the secretary’s office) or $60 during the fair. The Grandpa Cratchet Stage Show will return again this year, along with the Bike Give Away each day of the fair and the Cake/Pie Walk. New to the fair this year is the All Star Barnyard Revue, which includes pig racing and a barnyard animal show.

July 16: Robert G. Seigler was arrested for criminal trespass to property, aggravated battery of a peace officer and obstructing and resisting arrest at Fulton Road west of Chase Road. He was taken to the Whiteside County Jail.

Brett D. Nielsen of Clinton, Iowa, was cited for speeding in the 100 block of 14th Avenue. He was released with a promise to comply.

July 17: Kaywyn J. Beswick of Morrison was cited for speeding in the 1300 block of 14th Avenue. She was released with a promise to comply.

July 21: Corien K. Hughes of Daven-

port, Iowa, was arrested for no valid driver’s license, driving an uninsured motor vehicle and no rear registration plate light. He was released with a notice to appear.

Arrests On Wednesday, July 14, about 8:54 a.m., Morrison police conducted a traffic stop on a vehicle driven by Vasilica F. Benner, 31, of Maple Park in the 400 block of East Lincolnway for moving and registration violations. As a result of the traffic stop, Benner was issued a written warning for expired registration and arrested pursuant to an arrest warrant

(controlled substance violation) issued

by Iowa. Benner was taken to the Whiteside County Jail.

On Tuesday, July 20, about 10:56 p.m., Morrison police conducted a traffic stop on a vehicle driven by George T. Pelka, 68, of Morrison on East Lincolnway at North Cherry Street for a moving violation. As a result of the traffic stop, Pelka was arrested and charged with failure to signal when required, illegal transportation of alcoholic liquor in a motor vehicle and driving under the influence (drugs). Pelka was taken to the Whiteside County Jail, processed and released with a notice to appear.

History of county fair presentation to take place Aug. 8 at Heritage Museum

Morrison’s Heritage Museum will open its doors at 1 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 8.

A program will begin at 1:30 p.m.

Mary Beth Dombroski will speak on the history of the county fair.

The program will be live-streamed through the Facebook page, Morrison IL Historical Society, for those not able to attend in person. This is the first attempt live so please be patient. Radio station donation a big hit

A dedicated listener of WQUD Vintage Radio 107.7 in Erie surprised staff members recently with the donation of a hand-carved display to be added to the station’s musically themed décor.

Mike Pulford of Davenport, a daily listener of the radio station, said he was inspired to make a token of his appreciation for the good music and entertaining DJs. He said the radio station “plays everything” and the music keeps him company while working in his shop or other jobs at a recycling company and night shift supervisor. He says he got hooked on WQUD after listening to the Uncle Tim Show.

Mike carved a guitar and satellite (a homage to the Uncle Tim Show) into a heavy chunk of walnut wood. He said the project took him about three and a half weeks, and it was his third major project since taking up woodcarving as a hobby about two years ago. He said he learns as he goes and he’s able to envision what he wants to carve when looking at a piece of wood.

The Morrison Chamber of Commerce will be hosting a pop-up farmers market in in conjunction with National Farmers Market Week. The event will be held at the Whiteside County Fairgrounds on Thursday, Aug. 5 from 3-7 p.m.

Farmers markets stimulate local economies and increase access to fresh, healthy foods and unique local designs.

He married Judith A. Lehmkuhl on September 28, 1957 in Clinton, IA. She died on January 25, 1997. He later married Barbara (Andersen) Thomas on February 7, 1999. She died on March 5, 2013. Jim was first employed as an auto mechanic and then was a tool and die maker at Lord Baltimore Press. He was then employed by Electric Service in Clinton as an electrician for many

years until retiring in 2002. He was a 50-year member of the IBEW Local No. 145 and was also a former member of the Albany Fire Department. Jim enjoyed fishing, hunting, golfing and traveling around the world in his motor home. Jim designed and built his home in Albany and was known for his love for “tinkering.”

High School in 1952, where he participated in a number of athletics and earned a BS degree from Western Illinois in 1977. He married his high school sweet heart, Sally Lee Petersen, in 1954. They celebrated 67 years of marriage. They had three children, Frankie Marie Beswick Hood of Morrison, Colorado, James Harlan Beswick Jr. of Conroe, Texas, and Jamie Lee Norman of Flower Mound, Texas.

Jim was drafted in the U.S. Navy and served from 1955 to 1957 as a battery specialist on the USS Hancock, that toured the Korean and Japanese waters shortly after the Korean War. Upon release from the military, he and his wife relocated to Boulder, Colorado, where he attended the University of Colorado. Jim and his wife Sally decided to make Colorado their home, having all three of their children in the Denver/Boulder area.

The family farm needed his assistance requiring Jim to move his family to Morrison in 1966, where he spent the next twelve years until it became necessary that he relocate his family out of the area. Moving back to Colorado, Jim worked for the USDA Soil Conservation Service in Salida, Colorado, as a field engineer, working with local ranchers.

He transferred to Denver in 1988 and worked as hydrologist for the Colorado Snow Survey District, maintaining snow survey sites in 5 western states. He retired in 2000.

Jim’s passion was working on his Alpine “diesel pusher” motor home and traveling extensively for the next 19 years with his wife throughout the country, visiting many NHRA tracks and RV spots in Arizona and Texas.

His highlight was attending the Indy 500 and meeting Roger Penske in his garage at the track. He was known for his “can do” attitude

and dancing skills as one of the last good dancers of his generation.

Seldom indoors, Jim maintained an active lifestyle moving from Colorado to Arizona and then ultimately to Flower Mound, Texas.

Jim was a member of the Elks Club, Veteran of Foreign Wars and the Alpine Motor Home Association.

Survivors include his wife, Sally Lee; three children, Frankie Hood, Jim Beswick Jr, and Jamie Norman; and his three grandchildren, Alexandra (Norman) Bumpass, Addison Lee Norman and Austin James Norman.

Memorial donations may be made to the Fisher Center for Alzheimer’s Research Foundation. His ashes will be laid to rest at Grove Hill Cemetery in Morrison.

Jim was the family rock and his magnetic smile will be missed by many.

Ken first farmed in the Morrison area and also worked as a carpenter. He then farmed in the Erie area from 1963 to 2017.

He was a member of 4-H and FFA while growing up and later became a 4-H leader, serving for 25 years. Ken loved running chains for his boys’ high school football games and ardently cheered at his daughters’ basketball and volleyball games. He was a member of the Morrison and Erie United Methodist Churches, the Whiteside County Livestock Feeders Association, Whiteside County Pork Producers, and served on the Board of Directors of Garden Plain Mutual Insurance and Black Hawk Mutual Insurance. He was also a longtime member of the ASCS Board, serving as president for many years. Ken also served as a Newton Township Trustee. In 1971, Ken was named “Outstanding Young Farmer” for Whiteside County and runner-up for the state of Illinois “Outstanding Young Farmer” honor.

Three years later he was named the county’s Conservation Farmer of the Year.

Ken was a skilled designer, carpenter, and woodworker. He enjoyed genealogy and traveling the United States and abroad; two of his favorite places to visit were Glacier National Park and France. He and Gayle also hosted and later visited two foreign exchange students. Both Ken and Gayle spent many happy days at their cabin on the Mississippi River and enjoyed their time wintering at Blue Parrot Resort in Lady Lake, FL, where he played shuffleboard, horseshoes, and drank coffee and ate donuts with many friends. He also enjoyed spending time in Morrison and Florida visiting with his dad and stepmother Betty (Dykema) Beswick and stepsiblings, Mary, Judy, Bill, and Doug. After moving from the farm, Ken and Gayle’s time at Saddlebrook in Grayslake, IL was spent meeting neighbors, riding their trikes around the community, playing cards, and watching wildlife on the lake from their back porch. His recent time at Cedar Lake Assisted Living was filled with new friends and prowess at Jeopardy! But he remained grateful for his lifelong connection

with his high school classmates.

A year to the day after opening their new veterinary facility in Port Byron, Drs. Terry and Sarah Foust were finally able to welcome the public indoors on Saturday, July 10 during an open house. Up until recently, River View Veterinary Services was only accepting drop-off appointments due to the pandemic, so the tours were the public’s first glimpse into the newly constructed building along IL Route 84 at 602 N. High St. With giveaways, food and drinks, face-painting, and staff-led tours of the facility, the Fousts and their team of 12 assistants could finally show the inner workings of the state-of-the art veterinary clinic that was built at the site of the former Port Byron Academy last year. The full-service clinic offers surgery, medical, wellness, and dental care for small and large animals.

Dr. Sarah is from Chadwick, while Dr. Terry is from Dixon, so Port Byron was an ideal place to be close to family, both with a home and a business. The husband-and-wife team both obtained their veterinary degrees from the University of Illinois College of Veteri-

nary Medicine.

During the open house, clients could explore the expansive building with a rustic feel, pet care inventory selection, and various rooms where teams provide care for cats, dogs, and other critters. The facility is equipped with digital x-rays, in-house bloodwork, and ultrasound capabilities. The Fousts also provide farm call service to the surrounding area.

Tech assistants Kyan Stuart, a Riverdale senior, and Nathalie Zabramba, a recent Riverdale graduate, were demonstrating the new dental area used for both routine cleanings and dental surgeries. They were excited about the facility’s growth and expansion of services to local clientele and said their employment at the vet clinic has further inspired their interest in biology and agrisciences.

The Fousts also wrapped up their second Vet Camp of the summer last week, which they offer to community youth every year. Kids can get handson learning in the various aspects of veterinary care, from suturing to surgery to parasites to animal anatomy, plus the importance of spaying and neutering pets.

The Fousts purchased the new site from the Village of Port Byron in January 2020 and spent months on construction of the building. The $2.7 million dollar project was completed by TWC, Inc., of Wilmar, MN. The Fousts will be rebated up to $405,000 for their investment, paid in yearly increments until 2028 from the Port Byron Tax-Increment Finance (TIF) funds.

Drs. Sarah and Terry say they love the Port Byron community, and look forward to providing veterinary care to clients for many years to come. The clinic is open 8 a.m. – 5 p.m. Monday through Friday and 8 a.m. – noon on Saturdays.

J. Walter Field, who has handled more than 50 million pieces of mail for Fidelity Life in his 54 1/2 years of service, will be retiring as Fidelity’s supervisor of mailing and supplies.

David de Souza Guedes, who came to the U.S. in December from Brazil, is working as a watchmaker at Larry’s Jewelry. He has been a watchmaker since the age of 12.

Carol Bosma was crowned Miss Flame for 1971. Runner-up was Sandra Wiersema. Bosma will compete in the Miss Blackhawk contest in October in Morrison.

At the meeting of the Fulton Public Library Board of Trustees, a letter of resignation from David Flikkema was read. A letter to Flikkema accepting his resignation with regret and thanking

him for his many years of service to the library was also read.

Robert Wiebenga has purchased the former Brez-Way Cafe on Fourth Street and plans to reopen the popular dining spot. The business will change its name to Bob’s Uptown Cafe when it opens in August.

BY STEPHEN D. HARRISON, M.D. We have known from the beginning that the original COVID-19 virus would mutate. This is what nature does in order to keep itself going. What was unknown was, would the mutants pose more problems or less? Would people who had the original infection with the virus be protected? What would our vaccines do for the virus?

To be clear, those answers are not completely known, but let’s explore what we do know.

The bad news is the Delta virus is more contagious than several of the vari-

ants. It’s more likely to land people in the hospital and kill as well.

The Delta virus was first uncovered in other countries and is becoming more common in the midwest and southwest.

In England, where the country had been opening up, the doubling rate is only 11 days. The Delta variant will continue to spread in the U.S. for some time.

The good news is there appears to be some protection for those who encountered the original virus. More notably, those who have had the vaccine appear to have additional protection. Clearly, those who have had the full vaccination have better protection than those with

partial vaccination. The protection appears to be over 90% for those fully vaccinated. This appears to be a situation in which vaccination exceeds that of the natural infection as far as protection from future virus.

We must keep in mind that the virus must seek a vulnerable host. Its current highest attack rate is countries with the lowest vaccination rates. In our country, the largest single population is going to be the youngest children for whom the vaccine has not been approved. The safety of our young children is one more factor of consideration as to whether to vaccinate.

As to concern for vaccination during or before pregnancy, there are two major considerations. First, there is no evidence that the vaccine will change fertility rates. Second, there is no evidence that the DNA or other genetics of the baby may be altered. There is a current registry for those who have had the vaccine during pregnancy. To date, there are no identified problems in this situation.

A recent study showed that the virus greatly improved the immunity for those who already have had the infection, even if they still had antibodies. In addition, up to 95% of recent infections have involved unvaccinated people.

Erie Middle School students take on ancestor project As one of the final projects of the school year, seventh graders at Erie Middle School were challenged to pick an ancestor or someone they could research and learn more about in order to write a story about that person’s life. Students conducted interviews with family members, and some students were able to gather additional resources and pictures to help tell their story.

The project was a collaborative effort between the students’ history classes with Mrs. Gretchen Kruthoff and Mr. Matt Armstrong, English class with Mrs. Samantha Wolf, and their families. It was inspired by the original project that longtime English teacher Mrs. Wiersema made a tradition in her eighth grade class, and the teachers were excited to bring back the project.

Students enjoyed getting to know more about their families, and many were surprised to learn how interesting their families were.

My grandfather was an amazing person because of his adulthood. Jeff graduated high school in 1975 and then attended two years at Southern Illinois University. Jeff was running out of time to figure out a job. A funeral director approached Jeff and told him he would pay for his schooling if he came back and worked for him. Jeff then studied mortuary science and funeral directing. On Sept.

30, 1978, Jeffrey married Karen Randecker at the age of 21. Jeff did not like his job as a funeral director and quit after a year and went to work at 3M. He worked as a chemical processor, inventory clerk and planner/scheduler. Jeffrey had three kids, Jason, Julie, and Kendal, and loved them so much. Jeff liked to do plays. He had done some in high school and enjoyed those. He acted in plays, and one time Julie joined him on stage! Overall, Jeff had a very good adulthood.

Another reason my grandfather is

an amazing person is because of his retirement. Jeff retired in 2017 but still speaks of his job every now and then.

Now that Jeff is retired, he likes to garden, bake, ride his bike, travel and do things with his grandchildren. Jeffrey has 11 grandchildren and makes sure to be with them all that he can.

Jeff likes to see his grandchildren compete in games and goes to as many as possible. Jeffrey likes to have the whole family over for fun and games.

Jeff McDearmon stills acts in plays from time to time, and over the years has done about 15 to 20! Jeff has a good-sized garden and grows things to bake and eat. All of his grandchildren live within two hours of him so he always makes it to birthday parties and Christmas.

Lester was born on April 5, 1945 in Rock Island to William and Inice (Long) Moyer.

He served his country and was honorably discharged from the U.S. Army in 1966. Lester worked for the State of Illinois at the National Guard in Milan. Lester enjoyed the outdoors, fishing, and very much loved his country and his service.

Survivors include his wife, Bonnie of Rock Island; daughters, Dorothy Abernathy and Mary Solberg; sons, Billy Moyer and Michael Moyer; four stepchildren; many grandchildren and great-grandchildren; and sisters, Inez Talbot, Judy Canady, Elsie Moyer, and Donna Sierra.

My grandfather, Jeffrey McDearmon, is an amazing person because of his childhood. Jeff was born on Jan. 3, 1957, in Savanna, Illinois. His parents were Lawrence and Dorthy McDearmon, and they had nine kids. Jeff grew up with eight siblings but the closest one in age was seven years from him.

As a child, Jeff liked to play the piano and sing, as well as use a tiny microscope to look at microorganisms and draw pictures of them. Jeff liked all things to do with chemistry and was always doing experiments. Jeff lived in Mount Carroll and lived his whole childhood there and went to school at Mount Carroll as well. My grandfa-

OBITUARIES LOIS MARIE MUSSELMAN Died: July 16, 2021

Lois Marie Musselman passed away on July 16th, 2021. She was 95.

Lois was the daughter of George and Emma Bongart of Sterling, IL. When she was 7, her father passed from appendicitis.

Their little family, mother Emma, and sister Lilla Jane moved to the Morrison farm with her grandparents Hulda and Henry Rosenow.

There, she helped on the farm and took the carriage to the one-room school.

Lois was a graduate of Morrison High School, where she was chosen to sing solos in the chorus and excelled in spelling. Lois became a certified beautician, and started working in her aunt Helen Rosenow’s salon for many years.

In 1947 she met and married the man she would spend the rest of her life with, Leroy Musselman. Together they built a home in Emerson and raised 5 children, Diane, Steven, David (deceased), Marsha and Mark. As time
