SVCC offers students CARES Act funds College receives coronavirus aid for degree seeking students Sauk Valley Community College is proud to announce that the college applied for, and received, funding through the Coronavirus Aid, Relief, and Economic Security (CARES) Act to aid current degree or certificate seeking students during the COVID-19 pandemic.

The CARES Act provides support to postsecondary education students and institutions. SVCC is pleased to distribute these funds to our students, as they are our first priority. This funding allows for emergency cash grants to SVCC students whose lives and educa-

tions have been disrupted by the coronavirus outbreak. This funding will not count against a student’s current finan-

cial aid, is not required to be paid back, and will not impact their future educational funding. Students will be notified via their SVCC email with directions to

apply for an emergency cash grant and will be directed to fill out this form.

Additionally, SVCC is offering additional aid to students in the form of scholarships. During this unprecedented time, the college is offering Summer semester scholarships through money raised by the Sauk Valley College Foundation (SVCF). Scholarships have been increased from $10,000 in Summer 2019 to $50,000 for Summer 2020. Summer scholarship applications open on April 20. The SVCF is also increasing Fall 2020 scholarships, which will be available to students beginning July 1, 2020. These scholarships are available to students regardless of GPA. It takes 30 minutes to apply at svcc.edu/scholarships, and in those 30 minutes students could earn $500-$5,000.

As Gov. J.B. Pritzker’s revised Stay at Home order goes into effect, retailers are highlighting new safety requirements designed to protect the health and safety of customers, workers and their communities.

Many retailers, including grocery stores, hardware stores and pharmacies were deemed essential and have remained open since the governor first put in place the Stay at Home order in March.

These retailers continue to provide critical goods and services and have quickly adjusted their operations to adhere to social distancing guidelines.

Under the revised order, additional retailers such as clothing stores, sporting goods stores and others can re-open for curbside and delivery fulfillment of telephone and online orders.

The updated Stay at Home order also requires retailers to implement the following safety guidelines: • Shoppers and employees will be required to wear facial coverings while in stores. This rule applies to anyone over the age of two who can medically tolerate a mask, and requires both the mouth and nose to be covered; • Stores must impose occupancy limits, restricting the number of people allowed into a store at one time to either 50% of store capacity or limiting customers to five people per 1,000 square feet;

Burton Seaman and Rita Kelly were united in Holy Matrimony on May 14, 1960 at St. Mary Catholic Church, Morrison officiated by Fr. Francis Kennedy. They have lived in Morrison their entire married life except for two and one-half years in Italy. Since they retired in 1998, they spend their winters at their home in Florida.

They are the parents of two children, Michael and Lisa Seaman and Michelle and Steven Belha. They have four grandchildren: Ben and

Dorothy Siefken celebrates 100th birthday with family Dorothy Siefken, Resthave Care and Rehabilitation resident, had a visit from her family on April 28, to celebrate her 100th birthday.

COVID-19 didn’t dim Dorothy’s smile that can light up an entire room.

Dorothy exclaimed “Well look at that bunch!” with a huge smile on her face when she saw her family.

Dorothy’s family brought cupcakes, balloons and root beer floats to celebrate the special occasion.

Over 45 Resthave residents were treated to root beer floats to celebrate Dorothy’s special day.

Allison Seaman, Tony and Ashley Belha, Emalee and Brett Carrigan, and Stacy and Ryan Wille. They also have five great-grandchildren: Kenadee and Jake Carrigan, Bobby and Tommy Belha, and Easton Wille.

There will be no formal celebration planned at this time due to the current coronavirus regulations but cards and notes can be sent to 206 E. South St., Morrison, IL 61270. They will have a celebration with their family as soon as it can be safely arranged.

Dan Hovey, an ordained minister and friend of the family, married the couple on Saturday, April 25. Halie summed it up nicely after the ceremony: “Mom, this was the best day ever.”

Car parade being planned at Resthave Home

Resthave Care and Rehabilitation, 408 Maple Ave., Morrison, will have a car parade at 1 p.m. Friday, May 8 for the

residents. Participants may decorate the car and make signs for residents to read.

SWCD scholarship is awarded to Erin Stichter The Scholarship Committee of the Whiteside County Natural Area Guardians is proud to announce that Erin Stichter, the daughter of Brandon and Casey Stichter of Erie, is the recipient of the Natural Area Guardians scholarship for the 20202021 school year.

Erin is a 2018 graduate of Erie High School and will be a senior at Iowa State University in Ames, Iowa, where she will pursue a degree in Agronomy.

She has been involved in a wide

variety of experiences in soils and conservation. She has been part of the Iowa State University Judging Team, is president of the Agronomy Club, and has studied abroad in Costa Rica.

Erin has received hands-on work experiences while interning at Sargent’s, Golden Harvest Seeds, and Wyffels Hybrids.

At Iowa State, Erin has been involved in soybean research and is a teaching assistant in a soil science class.

These are just some of her many accomplishments.

Every year, the Whiteside County Natural Area Guardians, a committee of the Whiteside County Soil and Water Conservation District, offers scholarships to college students in their junior or senior year who are pursuing a degree in the area of conservation, agriculture, and/or environment.

UPSTART PROGRAM Fulton Elementary have recently been told about a grant program in Illinois available to 4 year old children, the year prior to Kindergarten.

UPSTART is a free in-home Kindergarten readiness program. UPSTART is done 15-20 minutes, 5 days at home with a parent/guardian and promotes a high level of parent/child engagement.

UPSTART is in its 12th year and is in 15 states across the country. This can be used as a supplement to Fulton Blended Preschool and would be a great option for those 4 year olds who are put on our waitlist.

Phil Cain, 57, of Cayuga, IN, died Friday, May 1, 2020, at Union Hospital ICU in Terra Haute, IN. Private family services will be held.

The Morrison Chapel of the Bosma-Renkes Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Interment will be at Grove Hill Cemetery in Morrison, IL. A memorial has been established by the family.

Phil was born July 2, 1962, in Morrison, IL, to William and Jean (Engelkins) Cain.

He was educated in the Morrison grade schools and was a 1980 graduate of Morrison High School. He served in the U.S. Army. Phil married Lori Wise on November 30, 1996, in Sterling, IL. He worked in the billing department of Genpact in Danville, IL, for 16 years and also worked at CGH Medical Center in Sterling, IL, for several years. He was an avid Cubs fan and Illini basketball fan but most especially loved to spend time with his wife and daughter traveling and making family memories.

Survivors include his wife, Lori; one daughter, Megan Cain of Cayuga, IN; his mother, Jean (Dalb) Temple of Fulton, IL; one sister, Beth (Kevin) Short of Camanche, IA; one brother, Tom (Eileen) Cain of Oregon, IL; nieces and nephews, Candace Marques, Emily Cook, Melissa Bowers, Brian Cain, and Jonathon Cain; Ryan Wise, Craig Wise, Jimmy Wise, Jamie Wise, and Kassidy Wise.

He was preceded in death by his father.

CHARLES E. COOK

CHARLES E. COOK, 88, of Morrison, IL, died Thursday, April 30, 2020 at his

home.

Cremation rites have been accorded.

A celebration of life will be held at a later date. The Morrison Chapel of the Bosma-Renkes Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements. A memorial has been established.

Charles was born July 22, 1931 in Lostant, IL to E. Frank and Helen A. (Bruch) Cook.

He was educated in the rural Lostant grade schools, and was a graduate of Somonauk High School in Somonauk, IL. Charles served in the U. S. Army during the Korean Conflict. On May 31, 1952 he married Alyce L. Ebbesen in DeKalb, IL. He farmed his entire life in the Somonauk, DeKalb, Rock Falls and Morrison, IL areas.

He was also employed at RB&W in Rock Falls, IL. Charles raised rabbits for most of his life, and he was a director and past president of the IL Rabbit Breeders Association. He held offices in the Flemish Giant, Standard Chinchilla Rabbit Breeders Associations and he was a member of the Silver Marten and Havana Breeders Associations. He showed rabbits locally at the Whiteside County Fair, where he served as Superintendent of the rabbit show for several years, and also at the Carroll County Fair. He was known nationally for his rabbits and had won many championship trophies with them.

Charles played sports in high school and he was an avid sports fan all his life.

He instilled the love of sport in all his children and grandchildren. He enjoyed hunting with his sons and grandsons, and attending activities of all his grandchildren. Charles’s greatest joy in life was spending time with his family.

Survivors include his wife, Alyce; nine children, David (Carol) Cook of Morrison, Clifford Cook of Morrison, Louise (Steve)

Donald E. Jones, 77, of Hillsdale, IL, died April 30, 2020 at his home.Due to restrictions on public gatherings, graveside services will be private.Burial will be in Bethesda Cemetery, Hillsdale.Gibson-Bode Funeral Home, Erie, is assisting with arrangements.

Donald was born December 26, 1942 in Reynoldsville, Pennsylvania, the son of Orland and Dorathy (Martin) Jones.

He married Shirley M. Dhooge on June 1, 1968.He served honorably in the United States Marine Corps from 1961-1965.

Donald was a Radiation Technician at Exelon Nuclear. He loved fishing, and playing slow pitch softball where he was the pitcher.He was a good cook, enjoyed working puzzles, and playing bingo.

Donald is survived by his wife, Shirley; daughter, Carey Feller, Hillsdale; sons, Andy Jones, Hillsdale, Tony Jones, Prophetstown; sisters, Nancy Jones, DuBois, PA, Sally Coder, DuBois, PA, Barb (Joe) Gula, Butler, PA; brother, Bill Jones, PA; sisters-in-law, Janet Jones, Anderson, IN, Jane Jones, Erie, Judy Jones, FL; and

ARLYN DALE THOMSON

Arlyn Dale Thomson, 82, Morrison, IL, passed away on Thursday, April 30, 2020.

Arlyn was born on January 1, 1938 in Morrison, IL, the son of Donald and Emily (Janssen) Thomson.

He married C. Claudia (Mons) Thomson on October 10, 1958, and together they had two sons. He married Jonni (Gallentine) Thomson on July 7, 2007 in Morrison.

Arlyn retired from General Electric in Morrison after working there many years. He enjoyed fishing with his sons, playing golf and cards, and telling stories. He loved spending the winters in Mesa, AZ where he would hike, play bocce ball and spent many days laughing with friends. Arlyn was very active in his faith at United Methodist Church in Morrison, IL. Survivors include his wife, Jonni; sons, Kenneth (Mari) Thomson, Rockton, IL and Kevin (Emily) Thomson, Verona, WI; stepchildren, Bill Gallentine, Detroit, MI and Amy (Jonathan) Kuhlman; grandchildren, Abby, Luke and Henry Thomson and Benjamin Kuhlman.

Arlyn was preceded in death by his parents; wife and mother of their sons, Claudia.

A celebration of life will be held at a later date. Cremation rites have been accorded with the McDonald Funeral Home and Crematory in Rock Falls.

LAWRENCE W. SCANLAN

Lawrence W. “Larry” Scanlan, 80 of rural Lyndon died Saturday May 2, 2020 at CGH Medical Center in Sterling.

He was born on September 4, 1939 in Rock Falls, the son of William P. and Cecelia (Martenson) Scanlan. Larry always had a love for music having played from an early age with his brothers in the “Musical Scanlan Brothers” group. He married Peggy Jo Knox on July 28, 1957 in Rock Falls. Larry began his working career at the former

Emerald Hill Country Club, and also was a meat cutter for approximately 17 years at the former Rock River Provision. Later he owned and operated L.W. Scanlan Construction and also Larry’s Ponderosa Camp Ground. For several years he and his wife Peggy enjoyed traveling and were snow birds to Florida during the winter months. Larry was a Lionel Train collector and enjoyed antique cars. As a family man, he loved to attend his children’s and grandchildren’s school and sporting events.

Survivors include his wife, Peggy; their children’s: Rhonda (Bill) Schauff of Harmon, Kelly (Craig) Hagel of Prophetstown, Lisa Church of Tampico and Marty Scanlan of Lyndon; his brother Norden (Mary Jane) Scanlan of Tampico; his sister, April (Michael) Ransom of Lyndon; 18 grandchildren; 15 great grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his brother Ronnie; his sisters Amaryllis “Mick” McNinch and Avalon Clayton.; his son in law Tim Church.

A family visitation followed by private funeral will be held Wednesday at the McDonald Funeral Home, 1002 12th Avenue in Rock Falls. Burial will conclude at

James Curtis Nye, 72, of Big Meadows Nursing Home in Savanna, formerly of Chadwick, IL, died Tuesday, April 21, 2020 at Big Meadows.

Cremation rites have been accorded. There will be no visitation or funeral service; a Celebration of Life will be held at a later date. The Morrison Chapel of the Bosma-Renkes Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Jim was born May 8, 1947 in Sterling, to Kenneth and Mary Josephine (Bailey) Nye. He was educated in the Chadwick grade schools and was a 1965 graduate of Chadwick High School. He married Bonnie Zink in 1966.

On December 16, 1972 he then married Donna Schrader in Fairhaven. Jim farmed in the Chadwick area for many years. He then worked at National Manufacturing in Rock Falls, retiring after 22 years. He loved camping, fishing and riding in his buddy’s pontoon boat.

Survivors include his wife, Donna; two daughters, Tina (Robert Breitbach) Updike of Mt. Carroll, IL and Brenda Nye

of Morrison, IL; one son, Tim (Marion Wilkins) Nye of Fulton, IL; four grandchildren, Crystal Updike, Joshua (Jennifer) Updike, James Gregory Nye and Chelsea Nye; six great-grandchildren; one brother, Ron (Adele) Nye of Morrison; a half-brother, Doug (Joanne) Seelye of Morrison, and many nieces and nephews.

OBITUARIES STEVEN JOHN VEGTER

Steven John Vegter, 52, of Morrison, died Thursday, April 23, 2020, at Morrison Community Hospital in Morrison.

A Celebration of Life will be held at a later date. Cremation rites have been accorded and interment will be at Grove Hill Cemetery in Morrison. A memorial has been established by the family.

Steve was born August 1, 1967, in Morrison, to Harlan and Marilyn (Stuart) Vegter. Steve attended Morrison grade schools and was a graduate of Morrison High School. He married Rebecca Sue Eichelberger on August 1, 2004, at the Rock River Christian Center in Rock Falls.

Steve was employed by P&P Industries in Morrison and most recently with Tyson’s Fresh Meats in Joslin.

He loved football, especially the Buffalo Bills, and wrestling. He shared a passion for cars and watching Motor Trend with his children. He was very adamant about his girls having a good education.

Survivors include his wife, Rebecca; three daughters, Clara, Geneva, and Arlana Vegter; one step daughter, Natisha Partridge; his parents, Harlan and Marilyn Vegter of Morrison; one sister, Barb (Scott) Reynolds of Fulton; two brothers, Arnold (Twyla) Vegter of Morrison and Mark Vegter of Bloomington.

He was preceded in death by his maternal and paternal grandparents.

HARVEY I. UHLER

Harvey I. Uhler Jr, 83 died Thursday April 30, 2020 at Alure of Prophetstown.

He was born on April 26, 1937 the son of Harvey I. and Agnes (Turner)

Uhler Sr and was a 1955 graduate of Prophetstown High School. After graduation he worked at Blair’s Conoco Gas Station. He married Patricia Hurless on December 2, 1961 in Sterling. Harvey retired from Illinois Forge in Rock Falls in 1999 after 38 years of service. He was a member of IAM and a life member of the Prophetstown United Methodist Church.

After him and his wife both retired, they enjoyed many trips with Wiersema’s Bus Service. He was an animal lover and enjoyed volunteering at Happy Tails Animal Shelter.

Survivors include his wife, Pat; his daughter Deborah (Rusty) Roselieb of Prophetstown; grandson, Joseph (Ketra) Roselieb of Macomb; granddaughter Jessica (Scott) Wirsing of Prophetstown; great granddaughters: Annabelle, Amelia and Norah Wirsing and a great grandson expected in July, baby Roselieb; granddaughters by choice: Katie Kuehl and Ashlee Rice; his sisters Betty Dennis of Prophetstown and Mary Garland of Morrison.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his sister Josephine Radamacher; two brothers in infancy; his son Daniel in infancy and his grandson Jeremy Kuehl.

Per his request there will be no visitation or services. Cremation rites will be accorded. Arrangements by McDonald Funeral Home, Prophetstown.

Memorials may be made to Allure Nursing Home; Prophetstown Ambulance and Fire Department. He also loved animals and any animal shelter would be his choice.

Ron was born June 7, 1943 in Morrison, IL, to Roy S. and Helen M. (Rogers) Dykstra. He was educated in the Robertson Grade School and was a graduate of Morrison High School. On October 25, 1963 he married Nancy L. Deelsnyder in Fulton. She died April 22, 2014. Ron was first employed by the Chicago and Northwestern Railroad car shops. He then farmed in the Morrison, Prophetstown and Thomson, IL areas.

Following that, he worked as a farm hand in the Morrison and Walnut, IL areas, and also at IPSCO in Camanche, IA. Most recently he worked winters for the IL Department of Transportation and summers for Determann Asphalt, before retiring. Ron was a member of First Reformed Church in Fulton. He had memberships with the Carroll County Farm Bureau, the Illinois Beef Association, the Whiteside Cattlemen’s Association and the National Cattlemen’s Association. Ron enjoyed hunting, camping and fishing.

IN BRIEF MPD Helmet Incentive Program announced

Morrison Police Chief Brian Melton is proud to announce the Helmet Incentive Program again this year.

The program, which started in 2009, is to promote bicycle safety among our youth and is only possible through the continued partnership and support of the Dairy Queen Grill & Chill owners, Ellen and Bart Smith.

The Morrison Police Department’s Helmet Incentive Program offers an incentive to those children (ages 3-16) that wear their helmet when bicycling.

“Starting today and through the summer months, anytime a Morrison Police Officer observes a child between the ages of 3 and 16 safely riding their bicycle with their helmet on, the Officer will reward that child with a coupon for free ice cream at the Dairy Queen Grill & Chill in Morrison,” Melton said. “We hope this program continues to encourage parents and our youth to wear their helmets and practice bicycle safety when riding.”

Even with the COVID-19 restrictions, children are encouraged to get outside and ride their bicycles but with their immediate family members only.

If a Morrison Police Officer stops to meet a child riding their bicycle with their helmet on, they will do so utilizing additional safety precautions as to maintain social distancing and to avoid personal contact.

“We are very grateful to the Dairy Queen Grill & Chill, Ellen and Bart Smith and their staff for their continued support. Most importantly, we are excited about having the opportunity again this year! We hope to reward even more children this year … so wear your helmets and encourage others to do so as well,” Melton said.

Schuler to deliver 100 Dodge Darts 60 Years - May 12, 1960 Eddie Schuler of Morrison will be delivering approximately 100 Dodge Darts to the State of Illinois. All cars will be used for various state activities. Drivers from Fulton, Morrison and surrounding communities are driving the autos from Detroit to the Schuler Garage for servicing before delivery to the state.

Dale Hall won the privilege of driving a Thunderbird for 24 hours.

He was one of group of 29 employees at the Morrison General Electric Plant in Morrison who won the privilege.

Three other Fulton residents Mike Mile, Gertrude Blink and Don Finch also were winners of the “T-bird” for 24 hours. The car is sent to one of the Company’s plants as a reward for efficient and outstanding work done.

50 Years - May 13, 1970

40 Years - May 7, 1980

At the council meeting members discussed, but did not pay, an $8,000 bill from R.L.M. Johson and Associates, Clinton architects, for designing the $40,000 28 ft. by 24 ft. addition to the City Hall. Members feel the amount is excessive.

Mayor Wiersema has asked Johnson to come to council meeting to provide an explaintion.

Donna Kay led the Fulton girls into a win at the Three Rivers Conference Track meet. Donna received three firsts and one second.

Conference champions included Kay in both the 100 meter and 200 meter low hurdles, setting a new school record. Members on the record setting 1,600 meter relay team were: Linda Wherry, Sandy Housenga, Amy Giesler and Donna Kay.

30 Years - May 9, 1990

An open house will be held in the Fulton High School Library in honor of James Zimmerman who is retiring from the faculty of the River Bend School system after 39 years of dedicated and distinguished service to the students of this area.

A crowd of people witnessed the first official turning of the sails of Fulton’s new windmill at the Dedication Ceremony held May 6, 2000. The mill was opened to the public after a variety of officials cut the ribbon to the Welcome Center. Rachael Ottens was the winner for naming the windmill. She pulled a shroud from the top of the mill revealing its name as “de Immigrant”.

10 Years - May 12, 2010

All city and rural Fulton mail carriers conducted a food drive for the local food pantry.

Approximately 2000 pounds of goods were collected and delivered to the Fulton Food Pantry.

The K-12 students at Unity Christian School blended together in classrooms to pair up in writing prayers of adoration, confession, thanksgiving and supplication to the God of the Universe. COVID-19 & HEALTH

Health departments expect increase in COVID-19 cases Over the last few days, expanded testing has become available for COVID-19 in the Northern Illinois Rockford Region.

This means that more people in our community will have access to and be tested for COVID-19.

With this increase in testing, there is expected to be more positive cases reported in our communities.

This increase in testing is important at a time when our communities are experiencing increased infection.

In the Northern Illinois Rockford region, the cases of COVID-19 have not peaked nor plateaued.

Local health departments (LHDs) are aware that more individuals in our community have COVID-19 than were being tested for the disease.

Individuals can spread the disease even before they have symptoms.

Increased testing helps public health officials to better understand the prevalence (number of cases at a given time) of COVID-19 in our communities.

Testing also allows us to identify individuals who have the disease or can spread the disease to help prevent more transmission throughout the community.

The important thing to remember is that COVID-19 continues to spread in our communities. There is no vaccine to prevent or medicine to treat COVID-19.

The best way the public can protect themselves, their family, and their community is by preventing exposure.

Reopening of state parks welcomed by visitors

BY JERRY LINDSEY & EARLEEN HINTON Shaw Media It’s official. You can now hike and fish at some area state parks, as long as you continue to practice social distancing.

Morrison-Rockwood State Park, Lowden State Park, north of Oregon, and White Pines State Park, between Oregon and Polo, reopened to the general public on Friday.

Illinois Governor JB Pritzker announced last week that Lowden and Morrison would reopen May 1.

White Pines and a handful of other area parks, joined that list via the IDNR website on Friday.

“Parks will be open from sun-up to sundown. Guests will be allowed to engage in activities such as wildlife observation, hiking, biking, equestrian use and fishing (both from the bank and boats with a limit of two persons per boat regardless of the relationship of the people in the boat) and mushroom hunting,” the IDNR website said.

“All visitor centers, campgrounds, playgrounds, shelter reservations, interpretive educational programs, beaches, special events and concessions will remain closed; turkey hunting will remain suspended at state parks.”

Tom Buskohl, of Polo, didn’t waste any time Friday morning in grabbing his fishing pole and heading to Morrison-Rockwood State Park.

“It was really busy early,” Buskohl said. “I love Rockwood, I have always taken my sons and grandsons here. I always attend the fishing derby sponsored by Whiteside County Sheriff Department.”

Kyle and Hayden Vinnedge, of Forreston, also tried their luck at Rockwood.

I’m glad the weather is good enough to get out. It is a huge change from homeschooling,” Kyle said.

Tricia Clark, of Sterling, her twoyear-old son, Declan, and Summer Trenholm of Dixon, made sure they visited White Pines State Park on Friday.

“We haven’t had anything to do about two months,” said Tricia as the trio walked across the bridge over Pine Creek at White Pines State Park on Friday. “We are just going to walk around today and look at the water.”

Declan stopped long enough to find a rock and toss it into the creek.

Further down the creek, Mary McConnaghay and Kyle Akins of Sycamore, were fly fishing.

“We actually caught a few,” said Akins. “A trout and some smallmouth bass.”

“It’s such a nice day,” added McConnaghay.

Area parks now open in Northwestern Illinois are: Black Hawk State Historic Site, Franklin Creek State Natural Area, Hennepin Canal State Trail, Lowden State Park, Mississippi Palisades State Park, Morrison-Rockwood State Park, Prophetstown State Park, Rock Cut State Park, Shabbona Lake State Recreation Area, and White Pines Forest State Park. IDNR’s website said visitors must follow these guidelines: • Practice social distancing by keeping at least six feet of distance between yourself and others • Stay home if you are sick or feeling any symptoms, such as fever, coughing, troubled breathing, and/ or other flu-like symptoms • Visit alone or with members of your household • Stay local and visit parks that are closest to where you live • If you arrive at a park and crowds are forming, please move to another

area or return another time/day to visit • Cover your cough or sneeze with a tissue, then throw the tissue in the trash. If you don’t have a tissue, cough or sneeze into your upper arm/elbow.

At the direction of the Illinois Department of Public Health, restrooms, shower buildings (for restroom and handwashing use only) and flush toilet buildings with hand washing facilities are currently open.

“This is a trying time for all of us.

The parks were closed by Pritzker in March as part of an executive order to prevent the spread of the coronavirus.

IN BRIEF Tampico Alumni Banquet has been canceled Due to the many problems encountered with the coronavirus sweeping the country, it has been decided to cancel the annual Tampico High School Alumni Banquet which was to have been held on June 26.

This will be the first time since the early 1900s that the annual traditional

get-together will not be held.

The Tampico High School was in existence from 1886 thru 1996 and all graduates have enjoyed the annual reunion.

Arrangements are being made for next year’s banquet and graduates will be notified of the date.

Founded in 1957, the center provides comprehensive rehabilitative services to young adults who have neurological impairments, and specializes in treating individuals living with brain and/or spinal cord injury. The facility is also VA certified.

Deep breathing plays a big part in staying healthy

BY STEPHEN HARRISON, M.D. Something that the COVID-19 crisis has taught us is the importance of breathing and in particular of deep breathing.

Indeed not only the oxygen but also the nitrous oxide is turning out to be a more critical component for our immune system and we have realized previously.

Anecdotal reports exist of people making substantial improvements by practicing the deep breathing techniques. These of course are not meant to replace additional important measures but only to supplement them.

All essential deep breathing begins with the muscles in the abdomen known as the diaphragm.

To initiate a deep breath feel the abdomen or stomach muscles go outward and then upward into the chest.

Allow the air to continue up through the chest cavity and all the way up to the shoulders .

The completion of the breath on the inhalation includes raising the shoulders in order to allow a little more air in to the lungs.

Exhalation mostly involves the reverse of the process with an additional factor at the end. Once again the end of this phase involves raising the shoulders in order to completely remove all of the oxygen out of the lungs.

Yoga masters have used different ratios of the

three phases of breathing in order to achieve some remarkable results.

Phase one is breathing in.

Phase two is breathing out.

Phase three is the pause between the next breath.

One pattern involves exhaling or breathing out for twice as long as you breathe in.

The third phase of reading though involves a pause before initiating the next inhalation or breathing in. This third phase should be as long as the first phase of breathing in .

Ideally a person will breathe through the nose because this does several positive features.

It actually allows for about a 10 to 15% increase in the oxygenation.

In addition breathing through the nose actually allows nitrous oxide to be released or it makes its way down into the alveoli of the lungs.

This allows them to take in more air through expansion. In addition the nitrous oxide has an anti-bacterial effect and also an anti-virus affect.

In addition it reduces the oxygen consumption of cells without compromising energy production.

Another aspect of breathing we need to reassess is carbon dioxide known as CO2.

Traditionally this has been looked at as a waste product that is of little use to humans although plants utilize it. In reality we are beginning to understand how important it is in humans.

It turns out that this product helps to dilate blood vessels. Oxygen on the other hand actually constricts blood vessels which can make it damaging in certain circumstances. Experiments are being done with combinations of oxygen and CO2.

One way that CO2 can be increased is by breath holding. This turns out to be a potentially very helpful technique that can be developed over time with practice.

This breath holding can actually increase the capacity of the lungs as well.

Another element of breath holding is that it may activate the vagus nerve. This nerve is essential for many of the body’s core functions.

This nerve may be better activated by humming during exhalation.

Many patients have been encouraged to do deep breathing exercises after they have had a surgery. There are devices known as incentive spirometers to assist.

Most have a number on them and a patient is typically assigned a target to achieve.

These breathing exercises cannot be overdone.

The best time to begin these breathing techniques is before one has a condition that requires such.

The first step is to become more conscious of your breathing and replace the traditional shallow ineffective breathing that sets us up for infection.
