EHS 2021 graduates look to the future

Fifty-four Erie High School seniors celebrated the end of one chapter and the beginning of a new one at the 126th commencement at the school on Sunday, May 16.

Tim McConnell, high school principal, and Charles Milem, Superintendent, both commended the graduating class for their efforts, dedication to their education, and finishing their last year of high school during a pandemic Also addressing the audience were Salutatorian Ella Heyvaert, Co-Valedictorians Kaylee Stichter and Grace Johnson, and Senior Class President Chloe Wiseley.

Also recognized was D.A.R. recipient Grace Johnson and S.A.R. recipient Nathan Johnson, for the Sons and Daughters of the American Revolution award.

BRIEFS Lyndon to hold E-waste drop-off The Village of Lyndon will have an e-waste drop-off for residents on Saturday, May 22 from 8 a.m. – noon at the Public Works garage.

Prophetstown Lions launches high school Leo Club The Prophetstown Lions Club has started up a Leo Club at Prophetstown High School. Leo Club is a student-led high school service program sponsored by PLC. From highway pick-up to food and clothing drives to the Recycle for Sight Project, the members care for their community and work to support its needs.

An informational meeting was held May 11, and Leo Club members chose their first service project: collecting supplies for Happy Tails Humane Society of Rock Falls. The shelter is in need of paper towels, dish soap, laundry soap, printer paper, trash bags, and canned kitten food, as well as any monetary donations. Items will be collected at the high school and Park District through Friday, May 21.

Summer reading program at library Henry C. Adams Memorial Library in Prophetstown has announced it’s Summer Reading Program 2021.

Preschool-Kindergarten classes will meet on Tuesdays from 9 to 10 a.m. and grades 1 and 2 will meet from 11 a.m. to 12 noon on Tuesdays, June 1, June 8, June 15, and June 22.

Grades 3 through 5 will meet on Wednesday mornings from 9 to 10 a.m. on June 2, June 9, June 16, and June 23.

Pick up and drop off sign-up sheets at the library before June 1. Cost is $3 per child. Children entering pre-school through children entering 5th grade are eligible to attend.

All groups will have stories, games, crafts and all of the fun we can dig up. Children in kindergarten and older must have their own library card.

Preschool age children may use a parent’s card.

Anytime a Morrison police officer sees a child safely riding their bicycle with their helmet on, the officer will reward the child with a coupon for free ice cream at the Dairy Queen Grill & Chill in Morrison.

Morrison police announce helmet incentive program Morrison Police Chief Brian Melton announced the helmet incentive program again will take place this year.

The program, which started in 2009, promotes bicycle safety among youth, and is made possible through the continued partnership and support of the Dairy Queen Grill & Chill.

The Morrison Police Department’s program offers an incentive to children 3 to 16 who wear

their helmets when bicycling.

“Starting today and through the summer months, anytime a Morrison police officer observes a child between the ages of 3 and 16 safely riding their bicycle with their helmet on, the officer will reward that child with a coupon for free ice cream at the Dairy Queen Grill & Chill in Morrison.”

Melton said. “We hope this program continues to encourage parents and our youth to wear

their helmets and practice bicycle safety when riding.

“We are very grateful to the Dairy Queen Grill & Chill, Ellen and Bart Smith and their staff for their continued support,” Melton continued. “Most importantly, we are excited about having the opportunity again this year. We hope to reward even more children this year. So wear your helmets and encourage others to do so as well.”

Registration is open for “Reading Colors Your World!”, Odell Public Library’s 2021 summer reading program.

The free program, which is sponsored by the United Way of Whiteside County, is open to any child preschool age through eighth grade. The goal is to keep kids reading over the summer months and provide opportunities to create and explore along the way. This year’s programming includes art-centric activities that will transform the library into an art gallery.

From stained glass to sculptures, the library will help kids tap into their creative sides this summer.

While guidance regarding COVID-19 restrictions is shifting, the library is proceeding with caution. Participants will be offered weekly make-and-take ARTivities, online readalongs and other fun challenges that can be completed at home. Each child will receive reading log bookmarks to keep track of the days they read, as well as a BINGO board with fun fam-

ily activities. While library staff misses in-person meetings, the hope is that offering a flexible schedule will allow more families to enjoy this program.

Children do not need a library card to participate in the summer reading club, but a card makes library visits much more fun. Readers residing within the city limits are entitled to a library card at no cost. Readers in rural areas may purchase a card for $50 a year. New this year, Morrison students are eligible to receive a free student card. Ask a staff member for more details or email Director Meridith Layne at odell.library@ gmail.com.

NEWS BRIEFS Morrison Legion to place flags on veterans graves

American Legion Post 328 in Morrison will install flags on the graves of veterans buried in Grove Hill Cemetery at 7 a.m. Saturday, May 22.

Volunteers are sought. Meet at the maintenance shed in the cemetery. With enough help, it usually takes a little over an hour to install the flags.

Vacation Bible School set for June 14-18

Morrison’s Community Vacation Bible School is set for June 14-18 from 6 to 8 p.m. at Morrison Junior High.

The registration deadline of May 28 will guarantee your child a T-shirt in their class color. You still may register anytime after May 28 and also at the door from 5:30 to 6 p.m. June 14.

Cost is $5 a child, $10 a family if registered by May 28. After May 28, the cost is $10 a child. Forms can be picked up at local churches and the Odell Public Library or go online at www.myvbs.org/ morrisonvbs.

John Crady 5K Memorial Run to take place June 19 The first John Crady 5K Memorial Run will be Saturday, June 19, at Eclipse Square Park in Prophetstown.

A 1 Mile Fun Run for youth is scheduled to begin at 8 a.m., with the 5K following at 9 a.m..

Each race will begin and end at Eclipse Square. There will be water stations at every mile.

Entry fees are $10 for the Fun Run and $20 for the 5K. Awards will be given in age groups and to the overall winner.

The commemorative T-shirts were designed by Crady’s grandson, Shane Crady of Colorado, and will feature a race logo designed by Crady’s nephew, Colby Richmond of Morrison.

Race proceeds will be donated to the Erie-Prophetstown Panthers golf and cross country teams.

Dalton Carls and Kaydince Dillin take breakfast orders at the drive-thru during the Hillsdale Fire Protection District’s annual pancake breakfast May 2. Hillsdale Fire Chief Tony DeCap thanked the community for the great turnout and support, with many choosing to enjoy their meal in the station’s truck bay during the department’s first public event in more than a year. Last year’s fundraiser was canceled because of the COVID-19 pandemic. Donations from the meal and 50/50 raffle support the department’s training and equipment needs. Dalton and Kaydince’s fathers are members of the Hillsdale Fire Protection District.

The Erie Fire Department, 807 9th Ave., will have their pancake breakfast on Sunday, May 23 from 7 a.m. – 1 p.m.

For a donation, fill up on pancakes (M&M’s available), scrambled eggs, sausage patties, and milk, water, or coffee. Spacious seating or carry-out will be offered. All funds will go towards needed equipment and supplies.

The Lyndon Fire Department will have their pancake breakfast on Sunday, June 6 from 7 a.m. – 1 p.m. at the station at 401 1st Ave., offering both dine-in and carry out.

POLICE REPORTS Fulton police May 7

Courtney C. McKenrick of Clinton, Iowa, was cited for speeding in the 1200 block of 14th Avenue. She was released with a promise to comply.

Shayne M. Englund of Platteville, Wisconsin, was arrested for possession of methamphetamine, possession of drug paraphernalia and on a Jo Davies County warrant. He was taken to the Whiteside County Jail.

May 13

Carly P. Kaufman of Fulton was cited for disobeying a stop sign in the 1100 block of 12th Avenue. She was released with a promise to comply.

Heather M. Bacon of Fulton was cited for operating an uninsured vehicle in the 1100 block of 12th Avenue. She was released with a notice to appear.

Morrison police Arrests

On Sunday, May 9, about 5:30 p.m., Morrison police responded to a trespassing complaint at Dollar General, 633 East Lincolnway, Morrison. As a result of the investigation into this complaint, Morrison police arrested Kenneth W. Farthing, 58, of Morrison, charging him with crimi-

nal trespass to real property (Class B misdemeanor). Farthing was released on a notice to appear.

On Sunday, May 9, about 1:26 a.m., Morrison police responded to a single motor vehicle crash in the 500 block of Ash Avenue. A vehicle driven by Riley A. Wilkens, 19, of Morrison, struck a utility pole and came to rest in the yard at 507 Ash Avenue. As a result of the crash investigation, Morrison police arrested and charged Wilkens with driving too fast for conditions and driving under the influence (alcohol). Wilkens was taken to the Whiteside County Jail, processed and released with a notice to appear.

On Thursday, May 13, about 4:30 p.m., Morrison police arrested Tony J. Smith Sr., 62, of Morrison, pursuant to an arrest warrant issued by Carroll County charging Smith with contempt of court/failure to appear – driving while license revoked. The warrant was issued in January 1996. Smith posted the required cash bond and was released.

Two injured, one seriously, in two-vehicle collision

Two people were injured, one seriously, about noon May 12 in a two-vehicle collision at the intersection of Moline Road and Route 78, the Whiteside County Sheriff’s Department said in a news release.

Bobbie Joe Merrill, 20, of Erie, was westbound on Moline Road when Samantha Luett, 26, of Clinton, Iowa, who was southbound and stopped at the intersection, failed to yield, headed east, and was struck by Merrill’s vehicle.

Luett’s vehicle rolled onto its roof in a ditch. She was taken by helicopter to a Rockford hospital with life-threatening injures, Sheriff John Booker said.

Center in Sterling. Booker said.

The investigation continues and citations are pending, the release stated.

‘Click It or Ticket’ this Memorial Day

Through Memorial Day weekend, the Whiteside County Sheriff’s Office is stepping up enforcement to remind motorists to “Click It or Ticket.”

“We want the act of buckling up to become automatic to all drivers and passengers,” Sheriff John Booker said. “Click It or Ticket isn’t about citations – it’s about saving lives. Wearing a seat belt can reduce the risk of fatal injury by 45%. Seat belts save lives every day, but they’re only effective if they’re used.”

Memorial Day weekend marks the unofficial start of summer, a popular time for traveling to visit family and friends. Whether you are traveling down the block or across the country, make sure you buckle every time.

While Illinois has a 94.6% seat belt use compliance rate, unbelted occupants account for more than half of those killed in motor vehicle crashes.

The simple click of a seat belt could save thousands of lives each year.

The “Click It or Ticket” campaign is administered by the Illinois Department of Transportation with federal highway safety funds.

The Port Byron Farmers’ Market kicked off the season on Sunday, May 16 with good weather, good vibes, and plenty of seasonal offerings ina relaxed and open atmosphere. Featuring locally grown produce, microgreens, fresh-baked goods, honeys, veggie plants, soaps, handcrafted items, wood products, books and more, shoppers will have a varied selection from local vendors each week.

The market is essentially returning to normal after last year’s pre-order and cashless format, put into place during the pandemic. A winter market at the library was also halted due to ongoing Covid-19 regulations. For this year’s market season, masks and social distancing are not required, though not discouraged.

Basic tips for treatment of dog and cat bites

BY STEPHEN D. HARRISON, M.D. With the number of pets in our society, bites from dogs and cats are not uncommon. Here are some basic tips for treatment.

With a cat or dog bite, the wound should be washed gently with soap and water. Pressure should be applied with a lean towel to the injured area to stop the bleeding followed by a sterile bandage to the wound. Keeping the injury elevated above the level of the heart will help slow the swelling and lessen the chance of infection. The incident should be reported to the proper authority, police or animal control officer. This helps to ensure that tracking

is done to certify that the animal had sufficient shots to protect against rabies, etc.

In general, dog bites are cleaner than cat bites. Cat bites may be prone to infection, and one should seek medical attention. On the other hand, most cat scratches are not significant unless the wound becomes infected. Cat scratch disease, which gets a lot of hype, actually is not common.

Dog bites on the hand, feet, head or that cross a joint can be particularly significant. Obviously, deep and gaping wounds should be seen immediately by a physician. Those with debilitating conditions such as diabetes, emphysema, liver disease, AIDS, etc., and

those who have weakened ability to fight infections should be seen by a physician.

Classic signs of infection include redness, swelling, warmth, increased tenderness, oozing of pus from the wound and fever. Also, bleeding that does not stop after 15 minutes of pressure should receive attention by a physician. One should make sure that their tetanus shot is up to date. Generally, 10 years is sufficient, though with deep wounds, five-year updates are sometimes performed.

Spider bites also get a lot of hype and attention. Most spider bites are harmless. Unless there is strong suspicion of a brown recluse spider or some other

threatening type, the harm of treatment, while rare, might exceed the benefit.

One caveat to keep in mind on spider bites is that a fair number of people present to the physician an infection that was presumed to be a spider bite, but not witnessed. Such infections may be a serious staph infection known as MRSA. While most bats do not bite, they will on occasion. While most bats do not have rabies, some may. While it is sometimes hard to catch bats that have rabies, it is wise to get the rabies vaccination to prevent what possibly could occur if it turns out the bat did indeed have rabies.

1971: John Eissens breaks school record in 2-mile run 60 Years

May 17, 1961 Work started on the drilling of a new well for the city near the intersection of 16th Avenue and 11th Street. Contracts also have been let by the city for construction of a water treatment plant at the site. The city will apply for a federal grant, which may be as much as $90,000, to help finance the project.

Fulton has been given permission to make emergency extensions of sewer mains to serve about five residences and business houses badly in need of sewer service. City officials explained hardships caused in Fulton by an order of the state sanitary water board prohibiting any sewer extensions until definite progress had been made toward installation of a sewage disposal plant.

50 Years

May 19, 1971 Salary increases for teachers averaging 5.5% and amounting to a total

payroll increase of about $50,000 for the next school year were approved by the board of education of the River Bend Unity District.

The Natural Area Guardians, a committee of the Whiteside County Soil and Water Conservation District, strives to protect and promote native species and natural areas in Whiteside County.

The scholarship offers support to junior and senior college students who are studying in the areas of agriculture, the environment and/or conservation.

Hannah Rose Schmidt of Tampico was among 3,512 graduates who received degrees from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln during commencement exercises May 7 and 8.

Schmidt earned a bachelor’s of arts degree from the College of Arts and Sciences. She also earned a bachelor’s of

journalism degree from the College of Journalism and Mass Communications.

The Riverdale Middle School 8th grade boys track team captured the Tri-County Conference title on May 4 at Morrison High School. The team is made up of thirteen boys who are diverse athletes. They were able to fill a majority of the events and overcame adversity when two of their peers were unable to run due to

illness. The team had a great meet, totaling 107 points, with the next closest team coming in at 85 points.

That following Saturday, all teams traveled to Bureau Valley High School and competed in a 3A Sectional. Even though there is no State meet this year, our athletes came to compete. This year’s state qualifier in 7th grade is Braeden Body in the 800 and 1600. In 8th grade, the state qualifiers are Nick Goodson in the

100- and 200-meter dash, Brody Clark in the 400-meter dash, Brody Clark, Nick Goodson, MerikRozek, and Gabe Robinson in the 4x100 relay, and Tyler Hasenour, Brody Clark, Andy Murray, and MerikRozek in the 4x400 relay.

In the team races, the 7th grade girls came in 3rd, the 8th grade girls placed 8th, 7th grade boys landed in 4th place, and the 8th grade boys came in 2nd place by three points.

The Village of Erie Police Department will host “Coffee with a Cop” on Wednesday, May 26 from 8 – 10 a.m. at Harvest Bakery & More, 916 Albany St. Erie.

Come and enjoy coffee and conversations and get to know members of the local police department.

The Erie Police Department has a goal to provide the best service possible to the public, and it starts with the input of the citizens. They want to keep the lines of communication open and encourage anyone to attend.

Four newly elected trustees took their seats on the Erie Village Board, one was appointed for a vacancy, and three outgoing trustees were thanked for their service to the community at the meeting on Tuesday, May 11.

Recognized for their service as trustees were Ella Bright, Mark Armstrong, and Kathy Kuhnen, all who didn’t seek re-election this year.

New to the board are Quincy Pool, Tara Kapple, and Woody Besse, with incumbent Jeff Wirth also being sworn in for another term. Pool was elected for a two-year term, with Kapple, Besse, and Wirth to serve four years. Mayor Marcia Smith and Village Clerk Gail Possley were also sworn in for another four-year term.

The board approved Mayor Smith’s appointment of Joe Froeliger to complete the term of Keith Morgan, who resigned in April after being elected to the Erie Board of Education. They approved hiring Trevor Cobo as a part-time temporary Pub-

put back into the community for current and future projects, said Sharon Moore of MGC. One of the club’s projects this year is a memorial planting at Morrison Community Hospital in July.

By the end of the sale, all leftover plants were picked up by volunteers with The Amos Fund for their Spring Plant Sale on Saturday, May 22 from 9 a.m. – noon at Grandon Civic Center Gazebo in Sterling. That organization helps those with limited income pay for veterinarian care for their seriously ill pets.

The Morrison Garden Club meets at Odell Library community room at 2 p.m. on the first Thursday of every month. The public is invited, and new members are welcome. Follow “Morrison Garden Club” on Facebook for updates and more.

The second annual Byron Hills Fore Heroes golf outing and fundraiser, set for Saturday, July 10, is open for registration, with a limit of 35 teams per shift.

The shotgun start for the morning shift will start at 7:30 a.m., and the afternoon shift will start at 1:30 p.m. Cost is $75 or $300 per team. There will be various prizes and raffles, plus food and beverages. The event is a dedicated golf outing that honors those who have paid the ultimate price while safeguarding the American way of life. All money raised will be donated to the organization Remember the Fallen this year. All reservations must be made by calling the club house at 309-523-2664. Byron Hills is located at 23316 94th Ave. N. A rain date is saved for Saturday, July 17.

Low-flying helicopters to check transmission lines in Carroll, Whiteside counties

ITC Midwest electricity transmission company will be conducting aerial patrols of high-voltage transmission structures and lines throughout its service territory, which includes Whiteside and Carroll counties, from approximately May 24 to June 3, weather permitting.

Helicopter patrols, often done at low altitudes, provide an overall status of the overhead transmission system, the company said in a news release. Crews will be inspecting steel structures, wood poles, conductors (wires), insulators and other equipment, checking for damaged or worn equipment and vegetation hazards.

Most of the territory is in Iowa, including Clinton County.

Other Illinois counties include Jo Daviess and Rock Island.

Those spotting the low-flying helicopters near transmission lines should not be alarmed, the release said.

Memorial Day concert to take place at Spring Valley Church Spring Valley Reformed Church, 10960 Spring Valley Road in Fulton, welcomes Spoken 4 to its outdoor stage at 6 p.m. Memorial Day, May 31. Join us in the valley for an evening of music and ministry. A free-will offering will be taken.

A light sack meal will be offered to eat in your car. The meal includes a hot dog, chips, dessert and beverage. The meal will be served starting at 5 p.m.
