Erie School Board discusses energy bill

The Erie School District received its energy bill from Jo-Carroll Energy after the Texas deep freeze and it was four times higher than normal, Board of Education members learned March 22.

“It’s an extent we’ve never seen before,” said Superintendent Chuck Milem.

He said he had a lengthy conversation with Jo-Carroll reps where they discussed recourse, federal litigation which could take years, and what the district can do to pay the bill such as developing a budget, paying the lowest bills from the bus barn and elementary first, and

spreading the rest of the costs throughout the school year.

Milem applied for a $7,500 grant through Jo-Carroll which could help alleviate costs, if awarded.

The normal energy cost for February is around $10,000, with this past month’s bill totaling nearly $40,000.

Milem next thanked the efforts of a community-based team for five weeks of meetings, discussions, and spending time to create a student-centered approach for students they hope to launch in the fall.

The team consisted of students, teachers, and community members, with a goal to identify ways to maximize student strengths and talents.

“This could help them pursue their purpose, and help them find their strengths and maximize those,” said Milem, adding this effort could be a pillar of the school district. Curriculum, leadership teams and the Board of Education will be having more strategic conversations and evaluating the opportunities the school is providing and can further provide.

In IDHP and COVID-19 updates, Milem reported that school boards and superintendents now have more discretion in deciding what events can be scheduled, giving more control at local level in conjunction with local health departments.

Additionally, temperature checks at school are no longer required.

Easter fun was offered at Winning Wheels The Easter Bunny was joined by Winning Wheels staff and a few bundled up residents to hand out bags of treats on April 1.

In a matter of two hours, more than 150 goodie bags were gifted to smiling children cozied up in their cars during the drive-thru Easter hunt.

This was the first public event the care facility hosted since the pandemic began.

The residents were excited to pack up some treats to give to the kids, preparing about 200 bags full of candy and coloring booklets in the past week.

“We wished the weather was a little warmer, but a few braved the weather the whole two hours and were excited to wave to the kids and tell them Happy Easter. Many also watched from the windows inside,” said Sheila Huizenga, Director of Sarah Ford/For Shaw Media Admissions & Marketing.

COMMUNITY NEWS Prophetstown-Lyndon Food Pantry March activity The Prophetstown-Lyndon Food Pantry is open during the Coronavirus pandemic. The pantry is open every Tuesday morning from 9 to 11 a.m. It is also open the first Tuesday of the month from 5 to 6 p.m.

The pantry is located at the American Legion Hall, 215 Washington St, Prophetstown.

The food pantry provides support to those needing food in area communities. The food pantry has received many generous donations from individuals, companies, and organizations during the current pandemic.

Food pantry board members thank every-

one who donated to the program in January and February of 2021.

The pantry board thanks the following organizations for their donations in January and February: Farmers National Bank, Whiteside County Cattlemen’s Association, Allure, Plautz Farm, Franklin Grove Church of the Brethren, PHS National Honor Society, Rock Valley Physical Therapy, Phillips and Johnson, Inc., Russell Construction Company, Leon United Methodist Church, Stumble Inn, and First Lutheran Church of Prophetstown.

The Morrison Garden Club once again will sponsor a children’s coloring contest this year with the help of the Odell Public Library.

The contest runs through May 5.

There will be three age categories: 3 to 5, 6 to 8, and 9 and 10. An age-appropriate, garden-related prize will be given to the winner of each category.

Rules of the contest: 1. The contest is open to children between the ages of 3 and 10.

2. Entries must be the child’s own work and on the official coloring page provided.

The coloring page is available at the library.

3. Only one entry per child.

4. Any medium can be used – crayons, markers, colored pencils, paints, etc.

5. The child’s name, age, contact name and phone number must be entered on the back of the coloring page to be eligible for a prize.

6. Entries must be dropped off at the library by May 5 to be eligible for contest judging.

Prizes being given will be on display at the library. Each prize basket includes a gift certificate to K & R Greenhouse in Morrison.

Residents cautioned about COVID-19 surge Whiteside enters warning status; two variants found On April 2, Whiteside County was added to the Illinois Department of Public Health’s list of counties in warning status because of the high number of cases per 100,000 (259 per 100,000) and increasing percentage of adults visiting the emergency department with COVID-19-like illnesses (6.4%).

This comes as new COVID-19 cases are once again on the rise. Of the 424 cases announced in March, 306 (72%) have been identified between March 18 and 31, with 192 (45%) being announced in just the past seven days. This has led to an increase in Whiteside County’s positivity rate. Whiteside’s seven-day rolling average positivity rate is 7%, up from 3.1% at the beginning of March. This is the highest Whiteside’s positivity rate has been since the end of January.

In addition to the increasing number of positive cases, IDPH recently identified two COVID-19 variants among Whiteside County residents.

The variants have been identified are B.1.1.7, which was first identified in the United Kingdom, and B.1.429, which was first detected in California.

When a virus mutates, the new strain is sometimes referred to as a variant.

These mutations can cause changes that allow the virus to spread more easily, induce more serious illness, or reduce the effectiveness of the vaccine or other treatments.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention believes the UK variant, B.1.1.7, should have minimal impact on the effectiveness of the vaccine, but believe it to be more transmissible (about 50% higher) and cause more severe illness based on hospitalizations and fatality rates. The increased transmissibility is of significant concern as about 84% of Whiteside County residents remain unvaccinated.

The CDC has indicated the California varient, B.1.429, has increased transmissibility (about 20% more transmissible) and resistance to the protection offered by vaccination. This potentially

John Sandford actually is a pseudonym for John Camp, whose books have appeared on the New York Times best-seller lists. Camp won the Pulitzer Prize in 1986 and the Distinguished Writing Award of American Newspaper Editors in 1985.

Camp is a native of Cedar Rapids, Iowa. His maternal grandparents were immigrants from Lithuania, and he spent much of his younger life staying with them on the farm. He attended Washington Senior High School in Cedar Rapids, graduating in 1962. Camp earned a bachelor’s degree in American studies in 1966 and a master’s degree in journalism in 1971, both from

palpitations are limited. Those that are not associated with other symptoms usually do not need to be evaluated to any significant extent. Thus, those with only the forceful heartbeats may realize this is not an uncommon symptom that often passes without further incident.

On the other hand, if there is chest pain, shortness of breath, blackout sensation, lightheadedness or more than mild dizziness, further attention should be sought.

Symptoms, as well as past medical history, will determine what level of evaluation is performed. This may include an EKG or electrocardiogram, and on occasion, thyroid functions. In

some instances with persistent or recurrent problems, a Holter monitor may be worn.

Another point that should be made is virtually all of us who follow our pulse or heart rates over an extended period of time will notice some abnormalities.

The good news is most of these are benign.

Occasionally, when treatment is necessary, medicines may occasionally be employed that help lessen the sensation of palpitations. Certain blood pressure medications, such as beta blockers, may be prescribed if your symptoms are too prominent.

Morrison community blood drive for March exceeds goal

R.N., Morrison Blood Drive Team Leader It was a chilly Thursday on March 18, when the second community blood drive of 2021 took place at St. Mary’s Catholic Church on Garden Plain Road in Morrison.

The drive was sponsored by Bethesda Lutheran Church, which has loyally sponsored a drive annually for 18 years.

Those who purchased and prepared sandwiches and cookies for the canteen were Nancy Pannier, Dee Janssen, Nancy Usterbowski and Andrea Dalton.

Thank you to St. Mary’s Catholic Church for agreeing that blood drives are “essential” and for graciously allowing the American Red Cross to hold Morrison Community Blood Drives every other month in the church hall.

Thank you to the Knights of Columbus (Terry Hoehn, Jim Prombo and Jimmy Prombo) for helping to move everything out of the church hall the evening before the blood drive and returning at the end of the drive to put everything back in place. Thank you to the two certified ARC volunteers, Dan Ross from Coal Valley and Pat Pendgraft from Sterling.

I am grateful for your expertise. Much gratitude to my volunteers, Carole Patton, Jen Stoudt and Mary and Vern Latwesen, who helped man the stations throughout the day.

The goal the ARC set for us was 59 “good units” to head to Peoria at the end of the day. The goal was exceeded with 74 units from 61 generous donors. That proved to be 127% efficiency, saving about 222 lives!

There were 14 amazing double red cell/power red donors – Vaughn Maxfield, Larry Oudekerk, Cindy Hoogheem, John “Jack” Bland, James “Dave” Boyles, Tammy Pruis, Jim

There was one first-time donor, Philip Olt IV. Thank you for joining the ranks. There were nine no-show appointments, but three walk-ins helped balance that out. There was only one deferral. We usually expect a 7% to 10% deferral rate, but there were better blood pressures, pulses and hemoglobin levels at this drive.

The American Red Cross recently acquired state-of-the-art automatic facial temperature video screens. The screens eliminate close-contact temperature taking. ARC is continuing to test donor blood for COVID-19 antibodies for free.

Several donors have tested positive who were not aware they had been infected.

If you would like to know if you have antibodies, you can come and donate blood. The blood donation process is easy, relatively painless, usually takes less than an hour, and you can save up to three lives!

Riverdale school board reviews COVID-19 updates

Changes to COVID-19 guidelines were discussed at the Riverdale Board of Education meeting on March 22.

Superintendent Josh Temple relayed that “goal posts continue to move” with updated guidance now in place.

There will be no more daily screenings, though school officials encourage families to continue checking temperatures at home. Remote learning for the next school year will be limited to families with an increased risk for illness, with more board discussions needed.

“It will not be out of convenience,

but out of necessity,” Temple said.

Indoor guidelines have also been adjusted with 25% capacity for indoor facilities, allowing more family members and students to attend events.

Temple said the school is looking to offer free rapid testing for symptomatic cases, with more details yet to be worked out.

Temple also discussed the second round of Cares Relief funds to the school, with about $650,000 expected.

The funds will help support students and learning gaps, summer programming for up to three years, and updating high school textbooks while linking to online resources.

Another possible project is filtra-

tion systems to increase air quality while better controlling the indoor environment. A third round of funding is also possible.

The board discussed the hiring process for a high school principal, with 12 applicants so far. The board is hoping for a recommendation by the April meeting, with various groups to help in the interviewing process.

The board also approved hiring an additional Kindergarten teacher for the 2021-22 school year and creating a fourth section for a classroom to help maintain smaller classes, after 69 students signed up at Kindergarten round-up. It also approved hiring an Instructional Technology Coach.

• Exterior high pressure sodium lights at the high school will be replaced with more efficient lighting at a cost of $4,000, though rebated.

• The Scholastic Bowl team won a regional title and finished 2nd at sectionals; the NHS inducted 12 new members; and Riverdale Interact members recently completed a service project by wrapping trees for Living Lands & Waters.

Together they raised three children, Steven Kallenbach of Florida, David (Lynne) Kallenbach of Georgia, and Darcy (Jim) Phillips of Tennessee. Carol worked at the Morrison Farm Bureau, Morrison Community Hospital, and together with Roger, drove semi trucks for many years before retiring and moving to Texas.

Carol is preceded in death by her loving husband Roger, her parents, all of her siblings, and one great-grandchild.

In addition to her children, she is survived by seven grandchildren, Heather Mangelsen, Ben (Lauren) Kallenbach, Jonathan (Shelley) Kallenbach, Andrew (Emily) Phillips, Chelsea (Brian) Burgess, Alyssa (Jon) Hill, and Katelyn (Devin) Roth. Carol enjoyed being a great grandmother to ten great-grandchildren, Emily Halfacre, Ethan Mangelsen, Jackson, Harvey, and Mabel Kallenbach, Sonya Kallenbach, Annabel and Malcolm Phillips, Ellie Hill, and Quinn Burgess. She is also survived by many nieces and nephews.

Carol donated her body to science. A memorial service will be held at a later date with interment at the Rock Island National Cemetery.

Registration underway for 4-H Day Camp Registration for 4-H Day Camp 2021 is open. 4-H Day Camp is set for June 15, 16 and 17 at Rock River Christian Camp in Polo. Sign up today to get your child in on all the amazing fun. Youth may choose to participate in all three days of camp or attend the dates that work best in their schedule.

4-H Day Camp is a day-camping experience that is conducted cooperatively by University of Illinois Extension staff in Boone, Carroll, DeKalb, Jo Daviess, Lee, Ogle, Stephenson, Whiteside and Winnebago counties and the professional staff at RRCC. Parents have sent their children to

4-H camp for a variety of reasons: to have fun, to make new friends, to develop new skills, to be physically active and to appreciate nature. 4-H camp is way more than a few days of fun.

Sending your child to 4-H camp will allow them to create memories they will carry with them through adulthood.

4-H camp teaches youth to make good decisions, builds their self-confidence, and helps them to become independent and gain the ability to work well with others. These skills will help youth develop into strong adult leaders. 4-H camp counselors devote much of their personal time to ensure today’s camp-

Campers will check in daily at 9 a.m. Daily checkout begins at 8 p.m.

During camp week, youth will engage in a variety of activities designed to challenge, educate and entertain. Two or three free-choice periods will be offered daily and will include options such as hiking, shooting sports, arts and crafts, crate stacking, team building challenges, zip lining, swimming and more. Early evening activities will be provided by 4-H camp counselors and will include campfires, a games night and an adventure night.

4-H camp is open to all boys and girls ages 8 to 14 by June 15, 2021. 4-H membership is not required. All participants will be expected to comply with the same high behavior standards expected of 4-H’ers.

Cost for each day is $60. Camp fees must be paid in full by May 3. Two local fire departments will have their annual pancake breakfast fundraisers this spring, with a few changes to account for safety and COVID-19 protocol.

The Hillsdale Fire Protection District will be serving breakfast from 7 a.m. to 1 p.m. Sunday, May 2, at the Hillsdale Fire Station, 412 Main St. The menu includes pancakes, sausage,

eggs, coffee, juice and milk. Drive-thru and socially distanced dining inside will be offered.

The Erie Fire and Ambulance Department announced on social media that its breakfast date is Sunday, May 23, for pancakes and more. More details will be announced. The department wants the community to save the date for the annual tradition.

Both breakfasts are by donation, with all funds to support the departments’ equipment or training needs.

To participate: 1. Get a partner or small group and choose one of four launch

points: Rotary Park, 224 S. Main St., Port Byron; River’s Edge Park, 500 Third St. South, Cordova; Schuler’s Shady Grove boat ramp in Rapids City; or the Albany municipal ramp in Albany.

2. Decide if you would like to track the debris you find using the Marine Debris Tracker on your Android or Apple phone at https://debristrack-

er.org. Use this training guide to get familiar with the process: https:// debristracker.org/resources. Sign in using “Rotary” as the email and “Mississippi” as the password. Practice using the app before the event without uploading it.

Big plays spark Newman win over Morrison

BY BRIAN WEIDMAN A double dose of Newman proved to be just enough in this year’s annual grudge match against Morrison.

Senior linebacker Brett Newman spearheaded a stout defense for the Comets, and they were able to hang on for a 14-7 victory Thursday night at Roscoe Eades Stadium.

Newman (2-0) was coming off a running-clock win against Bureau Valley, but was pushed to the limit by Morrison (1-2).

“Coach [Brandon Kreczmer] always talks about being tougher than the other team and hitting them in the mouth,” Brett Newman said. “I feel that’s what we did tonight. We gave it our all, and that’s all you can ask for really.”

“Hats off to Morrison,” Kreczmer said. “[Morrison] Coach [Ryan] Oetting does a great job. That was an old-fashioned football game – a lot of hard hitting, a rivalry game. To get a game like this, early in this shortened season, could definitely springboard us forward.”

After a scoreless first quarter, Morrison pieced together a nine-play, 52-yard march capped by a 7-yard touchdown pass from Helms to Alex Anderson.

Helms’ extra point made it 7-0.

Newman responded with a six-play, 54-yard drive that ended with Andrew Velasquez rumbling in from 14 yards for the score. Jacob Donald tacked on the extra point.

The Comets’ go-ahead score came right after halftime, an 11-play, 67-yard drive finished off by Velasquez from 4 yards out.

“You’ve got to give Newman credit,” Oetting said. “They played hard and it was a physical game. It was a little bit of

a war of attrition for us. With 18 varsity-aged kids, our kids don’t come off the field much. Newman did what they had to do, so give them credit. They stopped us when they had to.”

Helms completed 10 passes for 130 yards. Ottens grabbed six of those for 39 yards. Anderson had three grabs for 39 yards. Helms was picked off three times, once by Brett Newman at the end of the game and twice by Owen McBride in the first half. The Comets had no turnovers.

“They’re explosive. They tried to spread us out, and Helms is a heck of a quarterback,” Kreczmer said. “We were having trouble keeping him in the pocket. They have a lot of big receivers that went up and got it. A lot of the plays TC had, we were right there. He’s 6-7 and went up to go get it. It was good team defense, and anytime we can win the takeaway battle, we’ll take it.”

Velasquez had 18 carries for 92 yards and two touchdowns, giving him six on the season. Brady Stevens added five carries for 45 yards.

Mom2Mom Market returns to Christ Lutheran School Christ Lutheran School Boosters announced the Mom2Mom Market is returning to Christ Lutheran School’s gym, 2000 18th Avenue, Sterling, on Saturday, April 10. Masks will be required and booths will be socially distanced.

The sale is an indoor garage sale for families who want to get rid of their gently used kids clothing, (newborn through teen size 18), maternity clothing, children’s books, games, toys, DVDs and/or children’s furniture.

Booth registration is still open until booths fill up. Cost is $30. Double booths are available for $60 unless sold out.

Each vendor will be provided two tables and two chairs. Vendors are allowed to bring large items (saucers, folded play yards, etc.) and one hanging rack as long as it does not obstruct the pathway for the shoppers. Items must fit into your booth space. Family clothing and household items also may be sold. Items not to be sold are furniture, cribs or lawn equipment.

Single booths will be “L” shaped and

double booths with be “U” or square shaped.

The sale is targeted to moms or families who are shopping for kids or family items. Doors open at 8 a.m., with a $1 suggested donation. Doors close at noon. Limited concessions will be available.

“We are excited to bring back this event,” said Megan Shannon, Sterling Mom2Mom Market chair. “It’s a winwin for the community ... giving families an opportunity to sell their items, as well as purchase some fabulous finds, all while supporting the school.”
