A wish come true for Trae VanZuiden

Saturday night was special for the VanZuiden family of Fulton, as 19-yearold Trae was the recipient of a MakeA-Wish gift from the foundation that supports kids with critical illness.

Though a trip to the Super Bowl was at the top of his list, ongoing COVID-19 restrictions nixed that plan. So Trae had another idea for his Official Wish Day – a Gibson guitar. He got that plus an amplifier, music lessons, and a dinner with his parents, sister, and four grandparents at the Candlelight Inn in Rock Falls on Saturday, March 6.

It was also a special night for Teri Crawford, his Wish Granting volunteer.

The family met her about a year ago and started the Make-A-Wish process, including paperwork, brainstorming, and coordinating the wish. This was the first wish she was able to grant.

“From that very first interview for the Wish Discovery, I was hooked. I was captivated by this young man and his family who had endured so much, yet in talking to him and getting to know him and his family, all I could think of was how brave and strong he was, they all were,” she said of meeting the family.

“The bond they formed through Trae’s illness and their faith in God made them so strong and humble and I was amazed and inspired by this family.”

Trae always wanted to play guitar, saying it will be cool to learn and have a new hobby. The past two years have seen many ups and downs, so the gift of music will be like medicine.

After his diagnosis of Anaplastic Large Cell Lymphoma (ALCL) in January 2019, Trae initially spent eight weeks in-patient at Stead Family Children’s Hospital at the University of Iowa in Iowa City. He joked that he was the oldest, biggest, and “most mellow” patient while undergoing treatment there, something the family got a kick out of, he said.

Trae’s family remained by his side throughout his treatment and recovery.

His sister Taylor, currently a psychology student at the University of Iowa, would bring him Popeye’s or deliver homecooked meals, whatever he requested.

The family also became lifelong friends with others on “Floor 11,” the childhood cancer treatment floor where they spent many days and nights.

After being discharged, treatment continued with six more rounds of chemo, each three weeks long. Trae was able to push back a round of chemo treatment so he could attend prom in the spring. By the end of his junior year, and after 5 ½ months of treatments, Trae was declared cancer free and in remission.

In late July, he started practicing with Coach Patrick Lower and the football team and preparing for his senior year.

He graduated in the year of a pandemic

The ongoing support of the Fulton community and school officials will always be cherished. “Living in a small town, everybody knows everybody.

But Fulton did things for our family, beyond imagination,” said Trae’s dad Mike. One fundraiser sold 1,100 “Trae’s Team” t-shirts with proceeds to help the family. Christy, a 6th grade teacher at River Bend Middle School, had teachers stepping up to help in her duties so she could be with her son. Principal Kathleen Schipper even substituted for her class when the need arose.

“There’s amazing things about living in a small town. Fulton was there for us,” Mike said of the support they received.

Trae also received gifts in the mail, such as autographed Packers apparel and sports memorabilia. He got a signed red Solo cup from Toby Keith. Joe Giradi of the Yankees and Phillies face-timed him, and Rob Gronkowski of the Super Bowl Champions Tampa Bay Buccaneers texted him a video message. Their positive words and inspiration meant a lot, said Trae.

He continues to have check ups to ensure the cancer hasn’t returned. He initially went every three months but now he goes every six, on top of a yearly scan. After five years of clean reports, he will be considered cured. He’s currently attending Clinton Community College, with plans to transfer to Illinois State with a goal to be a P.E. teacher. He works as a meat clerk at Fareway in Clinton.

Trae was able to overcome his fear of needles during treatment, saying now that he’s “thankful for the experience.”

He now has two tattoos – one of his dog, and one cancer ribbon with #LibbyStrong, in support of his friend Libby

Thulen of Thomson, who he befriended at the hospital and who’s still fighting strong.

Trae played saxophone in middle school, so he has some knowledge to help him as he learns his new guitar. He likes 80’s rock metal bands such as Motley Crue and Metallica, and modern rockers Avenged Sevenfold. His dad offered to get a drum set to play along with him, and Taylor joked about playing the clarinet, since the siblings briefly played in band together while in middle school.

After seeing the impact of Make-AWish on their son, the family wants to be more involved in the work. “We see the value in the help. You don’t see clearly the need until you find yourselves in the position,” said Mike. He said the family was the recipient of so much support from family, friends, and strangers during the ordeal. They didn’t have to pay for hotel rooms or food during the treatments thanks to the unending generosity.

Taylor was inspired by all the love shown to her family during the ordeal that she got involved with the Dance Marathon, even serving as a leader and captain in this year’s virtual fundraiser that supports the Stead Family Children’s Hospital. They brought in $1.4 million this year, which goes towards endowments for specialists, as well as motel vouchers, restaurant gift cards, medical supplies, and other items that lessen the costs for families.

The VanZuidens say they will continue to pay it forward, since so much was done for them in their time of need. “Seeing your son go through something like that, it brings a range of emotions. But it makes you stronger. It’s made our family closer. We can relate to what other families go through. What’s important to us has changed,” Mike concluded.

A safer intersection is in the works on the north edge of Sterling

STERLING – Twenty-nine crashes in the past six years alone. That’s the reality of the intersection just past the northern edge of the city limits, where Locust Street becomes state Route 40 and intersects with the more rural Science Ridge Road.

One of those crashes – not even the last one, mind you – happened a little more than four months ago, on Oct. 26. It took the life of 15-year-old Natalie Williams, a Morrison High sophomore Natalie Williams nicknamed Bug who liked art, and games, and true-crime TV. The driver of the eastbound car, only a year older than Natalie and likely inexperienced and unfamiliar with the area, failed to stop at the stop sign.

His car was struck on the passenger side by a northbound semi. The driver was injured. Natalie died at the scene.

It seems the universe, drawing a grieving breath, decided that was the last straw.

Last week, after a confluence of conversations by people who at first didn’t even know they were working together, rumble strips were cut into either side of Science Ridge as it approaches Route 40.

That was the work of Sterling Township, which oversees Science Ridge and is paying the Lee County highway department for its time and the use of its equipment.

On back order are flashing lights that will be attached to the signs that warn motorists of the stop signs ahead, township Road Supervisor Dana Stutzke said.

The stop signs are now larger and outlined with flashing red lights.

That’s the work of the Illinois Department of Transportation, which is responsible for Route 40 and the signs on its approach.

For now, those are temporary, inexpensive fixes.

In the works is a larger IDOT engineering study. Why is that intersection so dangerous, and what can be done to change that?

Engineers will study the lay of the area, the crash history and related crash data – What were the drivers doing? What were the weather conditions? What was the traffic like? – and come up with recommendations.

The intersection at Science Ridge and state Route 40 in Sterling has seen 29 crashes in the past six years, Sheriff John Booker said. As of this week, the stop signs on either side of Route 40 now are equipped with flashing lights.

In a couple of months, when some possible solutions have been identified, IDOT plans a public hearing to get community input on the potential fixes: realigning roads leading to the intersection, installing a four-way stop or maybe a roundabout, maybe just the flashing signs, maybe none of the above, maybe something completely different.

One path will be chosen, and funding will be sought, Becky Marruffo, engineer of program development in the IDOT district office in Dixon, said in an interview last week.

Marruffo lives in Sterling and said she is familiar with that intersection.

Most of her colleagues at the Dixon office are from the area, and the day after Natalie’s death, they were texting one another about yet another crash and what it would take to get an unfunded project off the ground, she said.

When Stutzke was checking out the intersection in December in preparation for the new signage, he noticed IDOT people across the street and learned they were doing essentially the same thing, he said March 1.

Both agencies are being spurred

on by Ruth Eberle of Wyoming, Natalie’s grandmother, who on behalf of her son Alex has been calling Stutzke, Marruffo, the Whiteside County sheriff’s department, and anyone she could think of after her granddaughter’s death, wanting to know what they were going to do about that intersection.

“People have continuously said, ‘Boy, something needs to be done about that intersection’,” Eberle said.

Nothing had been done before because work at that intersection hadn’t been budgeted, Marruffo said. There is a fund, though, that pays for projects deemed necessary, and she is confident it will pay for work done here.

Eberle hasn’t seen the intersection herself, is not sure she wants to, or is able to, yet.

Last week, she created a Facebook page – Science Ridge Road/Route 40 concerns – to let the community know what’s going on, and to ask that people add their voices to her calls for change, and to help hold officials to their promises.

All she wants is for no other family to go through what hers has, the pain and the anger, she said.

“I have asked that these entities all work diligently in making this intersection a safe intersection so that no one will receive a call like our family did,” Eberle said.

50th anniversary celebration for Ron and Sue Vroman Ron and Sue Vroman, formerly of Erie, will celebrate their 50th wedding anniversary on March 13, 2021.

A family vacation in honor of the occasion is being planned for a later date.

Sue Rosenow and Ron Vroman were married March 13, 1971, at Church of the Cross in rural Port Byron. The Rev. Francis Guither officiated.

They continue to farm with their sons in the Erie, Hilldale, Geneseo and Atkinson areas. Sue is a retired

registered nurse, last working at Morrison Community Hospital. The couple are members of Grace United Methodist Church in Geneseo.

Their family includes Craig (Karen) Vroman of Erie and Chad (Jesi) Vroman of Geneseo. They have six grandchildren, Jacob (Maria) of Fulton, Samuel and Rebekah of Erie, the late Joshua Vroman and Jenson and Wyatt Vroman of Geneseo.

An adaptogen is a natural product that deals with stress

BY STEPHEN D. HARRISON, M.D. Adaptogen is the term used for natural products such as certain herbs and mushrooms that help the body adapt its function in times of stress.

The stress is maybe physical, biological, chemical or psychological.

Some adaptogens in common use include holy basil, ginseng, astralagus, ashwaganda, tree of life, goth kola, schizandra, shatavari, licorice, maca, relishing mushroom, rosemary, milk thistle, rhodiola, aloe vera and condonopsis.

Many claims are made for these natural products including helping the immune system, energy levels, physical stamina, fighting infections, handling stress and many other measures. On the one hand, they are incredibly safe. Reportedly, the Russians were using these as far back as the 1950s and achieved great success in the Olympics because of them. On the other hand, these agents do not usually undergo the scrutiny of medicine by the Food and Drug Administration and accordingly do not have

the full scientific benefit that people would like to see.

Keeping in mind the lack of full scientific studies, many individuals will try adaptogens in hopes of avoiding medicines. Some people will take them to support adrenal tissues. There is suggestions that they may help people with low adrenal function, as well as higher adrenal function. Some use them for anxiety and some for sleep. Some feel by helping to control the cortisol, they help blood pressure and other factors that may contribute to heart disease and stroke.

Naturalist medical doctor Andrew Weil has written extensively about adaptogen in a positive fashion.

Even so, we must keep in mind that these agents are often expensive even though they are natural and do not always have the level of product that they claim. They also may have, at times, undesirable side effects.

Nonetheless, an informed individual may check them out for themselves and monitor the side effects and positive impact.

OBITUARIES MARY JANE MCCORKLE CORDOVA – Mary Jane (Zimmerman) McCorkle, 89, of Cordova, died Tuesday, March 2, 2021 at Serenity of Moline in East Moline.

Private graveside services will be held in the Cordova Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, memorials can be made to: Transitions Mental Health Services, Moline www. transmhs.org, or Alzheimers.org.

Gibson-Bode Funeral Home, Port Byron, is assisting with arrangements.

Mary Jane was born October 16, 1931 in Cordova, the daughter of Wesley and Margaret Zimmerman.

She married William McCorkle of Port Byron on Nov. 1, 1957 in Rapids City. He passed away prematurely at the age of 38.

Mary Jane left behind her career in Sales at American Air Filter Co. and enrolled in Black Hawk College. She began her career in mental health, mainly in administration.

She started as the executive director of the Bi-County Association for Mentally Ill. In 1977 she became the director of the Great River Bend Advisory Council for Senior Citizens and in 1993 she retired from the Robert Young Center where she was director of the Community Support Program.

Mary Jane was an advocate for all suffering from mental health disorders.

She was an avid reader and kept the Cordova Library busy with her requests.

She loved to entertain and was an excellent baker and cook.

For any crisis you could count on a delivery of her signature cinnamon rolls and a taco salad. Saturday morning coffee group in the sunroom was a decades long tradition.

A devoted grandmother, she never missed an event or milestone and was their greatest cheerleader.

Mary Jane is survived by her two children, Pamela (Sanjay) Muralidhar of Plano, Texas, and Bill (Kate) McCorkle of Cordova; grandchildren, Jessica (Mariano) Almonte of Rock Island, Maggie McCorkle (Brett Downey) of Flagstaff, Arizona, Rebecca (Cody) Chinery of Rockford, and Maya Muralidhar of Plano, Texas; great-grandchild, Elliott Chinery of Rockford; and many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her

husband, William in 1971; brother and sister-in-law, Charles and Helen Zimmerman, brother, Harold Zimmerman; her half sister, Lois McLaughlin; and her half brother Robert Zimmerman.

NATHANIEL ‘NAT’ VOSS MORRISON – Nathaniel “Nat” Voss, 48, died Monday, March 1, 2021 at his home.

He was born on April 15, 1972 in Australia, the son of Larry and Judy (Hoak) Voss. He was a graduate of Prophetstown High School, where he ran cross country and track.

Nat worked for many years as a carpenter, where he helped many with their building projects. He had played in a dart league and was a true Green Bay fan – “Go Pack Go.” He liked the music of Avenged Sevenfold and Green Day bands.

Survivors include his children, Calista K. Voss, Brett Voss of Camanche, Iowa and Alexis Voss; his parents, Larry and Judy Voss of Prophetstown; his sister, Laura (Paul) Rodriguez of Morrison and his brother Chris (Amy) Voss; his granddaughter, Freya; and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his grandparents.

Cremation will take place and a celebration of his life may take place at a later date. Arrangements by McDonald Funeral Home, Prophetstown.

SHARON ‘PETE’ K. BORDER ERIE – Sharon “Pete” K. Border, 80, of Erie, died Wednesday, March 3, 2021 at Genesis Medical Center, Silvis.

A private family graveside service was held in the Erie Cemetery.

Memorials may be made to the Erie Fire and Ambulance or the Erie Christian Church. Gibson-Bode Funeral Home, Erie, is handling arrangements.

Sharon was born Nov. 14, 1940 in Moline, a daughter of Melvin and Frances (Griede) Meyer.

She graduated from Erie High School in 1959. Sharon married Wilson F. Border in Erie on Nov. 3, 1961. She worked many years in the dietary department at the Pleasant View Rehab and Healthcare Center in Morrison, retiring in 2001.

Sharon was active member of the Erie Christian Church as well as the Erie Community.

She loved to play cards and spend time with her friends.

She is survived by her daughter, Wendy Border, Silvis; and several nieces, nephews and great nieces and nephews.

THERESA G. (MOHR) SHELANGOUSKI RAPIDS CITY – Theresa G. Shelangouski, 94, of Rapids City, passed away quietly Saturday, February 27, 2021.

Mass of Christian Burial was held Saturday, March 6 at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church, Rapids City. Burial will be in the St. John the Baptist Catholic Cemetery, Rapids City.

Theresa Mohr was born March 29, 1926 in Moline, Illinois to Jacob L. Mohr and Katherine M. Koch and lived her entire life in the greater Hampton/Rapids City area while enjoying being active in many family activities and always with church and worshiping God. 94 Blessed Years To have grown up with her nine sib-

lings and been part of a close-knit, loving family. Happy to have been number eight yet, sad to be the last surviving sibling.

To have raised eight children, Beverly (Dean Arnold) Marcia (Charles Driscoll), Debbie (Richard Winston), Anita (James Brown), Mary Beth (James Maxwell), David (Janice), Diane (Brian Sharp), and Carol. She watched, nurtured and supported them as they became adults.

She always said, her happiest moments were raising her family.

To delight at watching her grandchildren and great grandchildren grow.

To have such a loving and caring partner in Louie that were friends and great dance partners. He preceded her in death in January 2012.

To have had so many relatives and friends as part of the gang or others that would visit from time to time, enjoying her homemade meals and desserts.

To have travelled to so many domestic and international places and enjoyed the different cultures and people.

To have been able to live in the “The House Louie Built” for 61 years to this very day and find such peace.

To have had such good health and quality of life that you can not only survive, but thrive in these troubled times.

SPORTS ROUNDUP EP BEATS NEWMAN Erie-Prophetstown got the best of Newman on Friday for the second time in a week, and didn’t need double overtime this time.

The Panthers beat the Comets 60-48 in Erie on Friday, three days after a 74-71 double overtime win in Newman’s gym.

On Friday, Kolby Franks led Erie-Prophetstown with 19 points. Bryce Rosenow added 18, hitting four 3-pointers along the way. Dawson Haggard added 12.

EP led 13-10 after one, 25-24 at halftime, and 46-34 after three, with 10 points from Rosenow fueling the third-quarter surge. The Panthers hit 8 of 12 free throws in the fourth quarter to help put the game away.

Fulton 52, Orion 44: Connor Barnett scored his 1,000th career point in a Steamers’ TRAC win to improve to 11-1 on the season.

Tug Fest and Baby Blues Fest, Port Byron’s two summer events, will be returning this year despite COVID19, the Port Byron Village Board learned March 1.

Tug Fest planning chair Tammy Knapp said the committee is planning for Tug Fest 2021 and “hoping everything is good to go,” by the first weekend in August.

They’re bringing back bands and activities scheduled last year, with the hopes that people come out to support the event and local businesses.

She said with last year’s event getting cancelled, the non-profits groups that provide volunteer help at the gates weren’t able to earn funds, so the Tug committee gave up to $500 in donations to the groups with an overall total of $3,900 donated.

The Economic Development committee had a meeting March 3 to plan for Baby Blues Fest, which features regional and nationally known blues musicians, as well as food, vendors, and dancing on Main Street. More updates will be provided at the next

In other action, Trustee Wayne Oney presented information on getting an additional 36 or 54 solar panels for the wastewater treatment facility, with Tri-City Electric to split half the cost.

The board opted for 54 panels and installation at a cost of $16,369 to the village. The panels will help the village meet their net zero output goal, while providing an additional week’s

worth of electricity to account for weather fluctuations.

Oney expects the surplus energy to cover summer, fall, and most of the winter months. The project will be paid for out of TIF funds.

Jared Fluhr with MSA Professional Services said the IDOT bid opening for the Rte. 84 sidewalk project opened on March 5, with the results given to village officials by the next meeting.

During the final items of the meeting, things got heated when the board tried to appoint Deputy Clerk Kristie Guardia to TIF Administrator, a paid position that Mayor Bruce Peterson took on after he was elected nearly four years ago, though he didn’t take the monthly salary of $850 allotted by ordinance.

Village Clerk Jamie Engels argued that she’d already been helping out with the TIF administrator and Liquor Commissioner duties for the past two years she’s been clerk. She questioned where her past pay was, why she had to remain on hourly pay, and that she’d be done if the board proceeded with the vote.

“I’ve put the hours every week, and now you’re giving her $10,000 a year? You won’t have a clerk tomorrow,” she said.

With a motion on the floor, Mayor Pro Tem Gerry Meade called her out of order and tried to get the vote. Engels continued to argue and disrupt the vote, so on legal advice Meade used his authority to adjourn the meeting.

A special meeting was set for March 8 to continue the unfinished business.

60 Years March 8, 1961

The Fulton City Council called a special election to be held at the same time as the regular city election to vote on a bond issue of $75,000 to help finance a sewage disposal plant for Fulton.

Two 20-year-olds from Clinton and a 22-year-old from Camanche were killed in an accident near Albany. An 18-year-old and a 22-year-old, both of Clinton, were seriously injured in the crash. Apparently both cars crashed into a concrete abutment on Highway 80 about 1 mile north of Albany.

50 Years March 10, 1971

Stan Borgman’s Steamers won the regional title in a game against the Morrison Mustangs that lasted three overtime periods. The final score was Fulton 62, Morrison 58.

Mayor Warren Wiersema signed a proclamation endorsing Girl Scout Week. With Wiersema during the signing were Barb Bennett, Jane Huizenga, Kathy Menz, Theresa Moore, Valerie Kiger, Pam Sikkema, Sandy Hook, Kathy Housenga, Marcia VanZuiden, Mrs. Roger Rathburn, a Cadette leader, Mrs. Marvin Legel, the senior adviser, and Mrs. Stanley Ten Boer, a Cadette leader.

Dave Wierenga and Jane Orman, Dutch Days parade chairpersons, reported on invitations extended to President Ronald “Dutch” Reagan to be grand marshal and the Marching Dukes band from Dixon to be part of the Dutch Days Festival parade.

Three Fulton wrestlers were selected to the all-conference team. Mark Dannels was named to the all-conference first team. Pete Kraft, a heavyweight, and Bob Whitney were chosen to the all-conference second team.

30 Years March 6, 1991

The River Bend Ambulance Association and the Fulton Fire Protection District moved one step closer to merging. Thirteen Fulton residents

graduated from the Samaritan Health System Emergency Medical Technician class. They include Deanna Flagel, Judy Martin, Linda Venema, Sheila Van Kampen, Wayne Hook, Terry Bielema, Harry Bitler, Kevin Heun, Forrest Erickson, Don Damhoff, Steve Norem, Jim Carswell and Richard Gossard.

The Fulton Chamber of Commerce and the Clinton Downtown Business and Professional Association came together to sponsor the Great Duck Race on the Sunday of Dutch Days.

Ten thousand tickets are being sold for the race on the Mississippi River, and the grand prize is a $15,000 deluxe pontoon boat. The plastic ducks will be put in the river in Fulton. The finish line is at the Northwestern railroad bridge.

20 Years March 7, 2001

Community State Bank recently added a new “teller” to its staff. This teller, though, is available 24 hours a day, seven days a week, Gary Hayenga, president of the bank, said of the new ATM machine.

The City Council has approved the hiring of two new police officers and the purchase of a new police car. The officers are Wyatt Heyvaert of Albany and Jeremy Leitzen of Savanna.

With the hiring of the two officers, the department will have seven officers on staff.

10 Years March 9, 2011

Five candidates are on the ballot for the River Bend School Board election. Four seats are available. Those running are Nick Crosthwaite, Mark Wade, Mike Ottens, Chris Barnett and write-in candidate Benji Grant.

After the record snowfall last month, Gov. Pat Quinn has declared all counties in the state to be major disaster areas. Over a three-day period from Jan. 31 to Feb. 2, 2011, snowfall totaled 21.2 inches officially at Chicago’s O’Hare Airport, making it the third largest snowstorm on record for the city of Chicago at that time. The official total at Rockford Airport was 15.1 inches, which was third on the all-time list for Rockford.

Fulton remains unbeaten

In a battle of unbeatens, and future conference rivals, Fulton beat East Dubuque 50-42 on March 1.

Fulton (9-0) got 22 points from Connor Barnett, including nine in the first quarter as the Steamers jumped out to an 18-11 lead. Kyler Pessman added 10 points and Ian Wiebenga scored eight.

Erie-Prophetstown trailed by nine at one point in the second quarter, was behind by eight early in the fourth and trailed by five with a minute to go in regulation before rallying to send the game into overtime. Erie-Prophetstown fell behind early in the first overtime, but was still able to come away with a 74-71 win over Newman in double overtime March 2.

Despite trailing for much of regulation time, the Panthers led for most of the second overtime after Connor Sibley knocked down a 3-pointer on the first possession of the sixth period.

E-P led by as many as six, 72-66, before Jake Ackman hit a 3-pointer with 10 seconds to go. Dawson Haggard made a free throw at the other end before Nolan Britt fed Marcus Williams in the

paint for a quick basket to cut the Panthers’ lead to two. Newman then quickly fouled Haggard again with 1.7 seconds left. He missed the first of two free throws but made the second. Newman had one last chance to tie with a desperation heave, but Sibley intercepted the pass to secure the win.

Heyvaert’s three-point play in the final minute was the key play in the Panthers’ 49-43 win against the Comets.

Comets avenge loss to Panthers

Newman avenged its season-opening loss to Erie-Prophetstown with a 42-37 win March 4 in Prophetstown.

The Comets (2-1) led 13-7 after the first quarter, 25-18 at halftime and 3323 after three quarters before the Panthers outscored them 14-9 in the fourth.

February snow boosts topsoil moisture in Illinois

The active weather pattern, which dominated the second half of February, was brutal from a temperature standpoint, but beneficial in terms of precipitation.

Illinois received an average of 2.01 inches of precipitation last month, the exact same total as February 2020, and just a 10th of an inch below average.

“Overall, drought conditions have improved,” said Trent Ford, a state climatologist with the Illinois State Water Survey. “We’re much better on soil moisture than we were coming into February.”

“It was quite an extreme month for temperature and snow-wise,” Ford said of the February weather. “In terms of snowfall, we did have one of the top 10 snowiest on record at many stations. We had some pretty impressive snowpacks.

“But on the flipside of drought (relief), we have some areas along the Wabash and Ohio rivers at minor to moderate flood stage,” he noted on the first day of climatological spring. “With an

The potential for wet conditions in the weeks ahead could delay the start of fieldwork.

“It may impede spring fieldwork a

little bit, but as the water gets into deeper layers of the soil, it means we’ll have more in reserve going into summer,” Ford said.

Both the short-term and monthly outlook for March show strongly elevated odds of above-average temperatures after a bitter stretch in February.

Many locations across the state endured 20 days or more of below-average temperatures in February, which was more than December and January combined. The Monmouth weather station reported 12 straight days with an average temperature at least 25 to 30 degrees below normal.

The preliminary statewide temperature averaged just 20 degrees last month, 11 degrees below the 1991-2020 average.

“As it sits now, it was the 10th coldest (February) on record going back to 1895,” Ford said. “It’s pretty amazing given the long-term warming trend in winter.

“We’ve definitely transitioned to warmer conditions,” he added. “We may still get a few shots of cold air in March, but we’re definitely not looking at anything like we saw in February.”

Morrison High School to offer summer driver education course Morrison High School is planning to offer both the classroom and behind-thewheel phases of driver education during the 2021 summer school session.

Provided that at least 12 students register and pay for the course by the April 30 registration deadline, the program will run from Tuesday, June 1, through Thursday, June 24. The program is $295.

The course is open to students outside District 6, as well as those who live within District 6’s boundaries.

The classroom course will run from

10 a.m. to noon Monday through Thursday.

The BTW sessions will take place both before the course (7:30 to 9:30 a.m.) and after the course (12:30 to 2:30 p.m. and 3 to 5 p.m.). Students will be able to select BTW time slots that fit their schedules during a time-slot selection process on the first day of the course.

No classroom or behind-the-wheel driving sessions will be on Fridays.

During the program, students will complete the 30-hour classroom require-

ment, the six-hour BTW driving requirement and the six-hour in-car observation requirement. As long as the Illinois State Board of Education continues to allow online instruction for driver education, students will have the option to take the 30-hour course in an online format via Google Meet or in an in-classroom format.

Students also will need to pay a $20 instruction permit fee to the Illinois Secretary of State when they apply for their instruction permit.

Students must be 15 or older by Tuesday, June 1, 2021, to enroll in the course.

Thursday was Wear Your Favorite Shirt and Be Proud of Yourself. Friday was Black and Gold Day to represent we are one big Riverdale family.

Morrison Police Report Arrests

On Friday, Feb. 19, about 7:31 p.m., Morrison police responded to a possible fight in the 200 block of East Knox Street, Morrison. As a result of the investigation, Morrison police arrested and charged Jeremy S. Wagner, 41, of Morrison with criminal damage to property. Wagner was released with a notice to appear.

On Friday, Feb. 19, about 11:10 p.m., Morrison police conducted a traffic stop on a vehicle driven by Brody M. Ivey, 19, of Rock Falls, on East Lincolnway at Bishop Road for a registration violation. As a result of the investigation during the traffic stop, Ivey was issued a warning citation for improper display of registration and a city ordinance citation for unlawful possession of cannabis/paraphernalia. A passenger, Detrich V. Johnson, 20, of Rock Falls was issued a city ordinance citation for unlawful possession of cannabis/paraphernalia.

Another passenger, Noah A. Bellini, 19, of Rock Falls, was issued a city ordinance citation for unlawful possession of cannabis/paraphernalia and charged with unlawful possession of cannabis (30 to 100 grams). Bellini was taken to the Whiteside County Jail where he was processed and then released with a notice to appear.

On Saturday, Feb. 20, about 10:40 p.m., Morrison police conducted a traffic stop on a vehicle at Lincoln Road (U.S. Route 30) and Carroll Road (Illinois Route 78 North) for multiple equipment and moving viola-

15 tions. As a result of the investigation during the traffic stop, Morrison police arrested a passenger, Paula K. Holder, 32, of Sterling, pursuant to an arrest warrant issued by Whiteside County charging Holder with failure to appear – driving while license suspended. Holder was taken to the Whiteside County Jail. The driver, Jade L. Green, 26, of Camanche Iowa, was issued warning citations for speeding, failure to secure load and no splash guards.

On Thursday, Feb. 25, about 2:57 a.m., Morrison police conducted a traffic stop on a vehicle driven by Dustin J. Funderberg, 38, of Morrison, in the 700 block of East Lincolnway for expired registration. As a result of the traffic stop, Funderberg was issued a warning citation for the expired registration and taken into custody pursuant to an order of commitment issued by Whiteside County. Funderberg was taken to the Whiteside County Jail, processed and released after posting bond.

On Friday, Feb. 26, about 12:12 a.m., Morrison police conducted a traffic stop on a vehicle driven by Kenneth W. Farthing, 58, of Morrison, in the 600 block of East Lincolnway for a moving violation. As a result of the traffic stop, Farthing was arrested and charged with failure to signal, failure to yield, operation of motor vehicle while registration revoked and driving under the influence (alcohol). Farthing was taken to the Whiteside County Jail, processed and released on a notice to appear.

• POLICE REPORTS

On Saturday, Feb. 27, about 2:02 a.m., Morrison police conducted a traffic stop on a vehicle driven by Zackary M. Vilmont, 29, of Erie, at East Lincolnway and North Jackson Street for moving and equipment violations. As a result of the traffic stop, Vilmont was arrested and charged with improper lane use and driving under the influence (alcohol). Vilmont was taken to the Whiteside County Jail, processed and released on a notice to appear.

On Monday, March 1, about 11:41 p.m., Morrison police conducted a traffic stop on a vehicle driven by Damian A. Rieck, 28, of Morrison, at North Jackson Street and East Lincolnway for an equipment violation. As a result of the traffic stop, Morrison police arrested and charged Rieck with operating uninsured vehicle, driving while license revoked and unlawful possession of cannabis (30 to 100 grams – Class A misdemeanor). Rieck was taken to the Whiteside County Jail, processed and released with a notice to appear. Rieck also was issued a warning citation for no rear registration plate lamp.

On Tuesday, March 2, about 9:50 p.m., Morrison police responded to a motor vehicle crash at 402 W. Main St. As a result of the investigation, Morrison

Whiteside County Sheriff February activity Whiteside County Sheriff John Booker announced the department’s activity for the month of February.

Deputies made five DUI arrests, handled 36 traffic crashes, served 16 civil papers and arrested two subjects on out-

Illinois State Police District 1 troopers issued 324 citations and 362 written warnings, and made 15 criminal arrests during the month of February. Speeding accounted for 136 citations, 17 citations were issued for occupant restraint violations, and 13 citations were issued for distracted driving violations.

Troopers investigated 38 traffic crashes, assisted 217 motorists, and conducted 148 commercial vehicle inspections, 20 of which were placed out-of-service for safety reasons.

There were nine arrests for driving under the influence.

District 1, which encompasses Carroll, Lee, Ogle and Whiteside counties, investigated no fatal traffic crashes in February.

The public is reminded that these are merely charges and all people are presumed innocent until proved guilty in a court of law.

Participants will meet at the river overlook across from the FWS Ingersoll Wetlands Learning Center, 7071 Riverview Rd., Thomson.

SVCC partners for SHIELD Illinois testing for COVID-19 Sauk Valley Community College is scheduled to begin operating a SHIELD Illinois collection site partner the week of March 8. SHIELD Illinois is a screening testing program and infrastructure that deploys the University of Illinois’ innovative saliva test across the state. SVCC is among the first community colleges to partner with University of Illinois as a partner site for testing.

SHIELD Illinois COVID-19 testing is a lower cost test option that provides quicker results than traditional testing. The saliva-based testing is non-intrusive and does not require medically trained personnel to collect samples. The test is highly accurate and received emergency use authorization from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration

(FDA) on Feb. 24.

The test will initially be used for SVCC employees on campus, athletes, and health professions students. Later in March, the College plans to offer the service to area employers and possibly the public at large on a cost-only basis.

The College will be assuming (via HEERF stimulus funding, aka CARES dollars) the cost of transporting samples to the lab and personnel expenses. Samples will be transported to a lab in Rockford daily after the collection. Results will typically be available via a secure website within 24 hours.

Emmanuel Reformed free community meals

The free community Wednesday night drive-thru meals continue this Wednesday from 5:30 to 6 p.m.

This week’s menu will be smothered Swiss steak, mashed potatoes and carrot cake with homemade cream cheese frosting. Enter the church parking lot from the north alley and remain in your cars. A runner will inquire as to how many meals you need, and those meals will be brought directly to you.

This Sunday’s 8:30 a.m. (masks MANDATORY) and 10 a.m. (masks recommended) worship services will have Pastor Luke Schouten continuing his Lenten message series “Journey of the Stones” with his message “Heart of Stones” drawn from Luke 11: 37-52.

The sacrament of Holy Communion will be celebrated at both services. At the 10 a.m. service, Profession of Faith and the sacrament of Baptism will be celebrated. Rich Criss will lead the worship set, using “At the Cross” and “In Christ Alone.” Criss will be the organist for the service, providing the prelude, interlude and postlude.
