HOLIDAY CHEER Sarah Ford for Shaw Media

Officer TJ Spencer of the Prophetstown Police Department is pictured at the station on Thursday, Dec. 23, with a handful of lottery tickets ready to be given out to drivers caught “doing the right thing.” This was the second year that each officer handed out 10 $5 tickets to unsuspecting drivers during their shifts. Spencer said the funds come from an anonymous donor, with the tickets purchased at Prophet Mini Mart. “It’s a nice way to spread holiday cheer,” he said, while adding that drivers pulled over are caught off guard but end up smiling when they find out why. So far, the officers are unsure if anyone has won big on their scratch ticket.
