The Prophetstown Lions Club’s annual Toys for Kids community project is currently underway, and the group is seeking donations and volunteers to help struggling families have a happy Christmas.

With help from the staff at the local school districts, the Lions have identified families in need of help, with the club coordinating donations of clothes and gifts for area children.

“We anticipate the need to be high again and have made the decision to

expand our efforts to include all children in our area all the way through high school,” said Lions’ President Teresa Bielema. “With this in mind, we have a greater need of support, and hope we can continue to count on the community’s generosity.”

The process starts when a group of volunteer elves sign up to shop for a family, taking with them the wish and need list turned in. The cost is sometimes donated by the elves themselves, but most of the money is raised from generous businesses and individuals in the community, said Bielema.

Once the elves complete the shopping, they wrap the gifts and get the presents coordinated for delivery. The gifts are brought to the family when the children aren’t home, so they can be hidden for the Christmas morning reveal.

The Lions are thankful for all the generous donors, elves, and Santa’s helpers.

Donations can be mailed to P.O. Box 6 in Prophetstown or by dropping them off to Lion Don Vogel at Farmers National Bank. Gifts can be dropped off at Prophetstown Post Office, Hometown Hardware, FNB, 1st Gateway Credit Union, and the Country Financial office.

NEWS BRIEFS Hooppole Legion Fish Fry returns on Friday

Hooppole American Legion Post 1191 will be serving up fried fish and sides on Friday, Dec. 10. Meals will be served starting at 6 p.m., with carryout available. There will also be a 54 card draw and raffles. The Legion is located one mile north of Hooppole.

Lyndon to hold mapping meeting on Dec. 10

Lyndon’s LEAP Committee will hold a public meeting on Friday, Dec. 10 at 6 p.m. at the Lyndon Fire Station to discuss MAPPINGManagement and Planning Involving Nonmetropolitan Groups. The MAPPING program is

coordinated by Western Illinois University Macomb and the Illinois Institute for Rural Affairs and is designed to involve members of the community in creating a long-range vision for economic development, as well as a plan of action for achieving it. All area residents are invited to attend.

Odell Public Library Friends donates $5,000 to update floors

Odell Library board member After careful planning and enthusiastic discussion, the Odell Public Library Friends has launched Fund Our Floor campaign to raise money for new flooring in the 26-year-old building. The cost of the project, estimated at $80,000, will include materials, removal of old flooring, floor preparation, installation of new carpet tiles and vinyl, and a service to move our many books and shelving. The Friends initiated this undertaking with a donation of $5,000. To our surprise, a generous anonymous donor has added a matching grant of $10,000.

In the spirit of giving, we hope that many supporters will join us to

improve the functionality, space and appearance of this vital community resource. In the words of the esteemed Albert Einstein, “The only thing you have to know is the location of the library.” Libraries preserve not only our history, but help build our futures.

Veterans, active service members, families and friends are invited to two local events to remember and honor local veterans.

Wreaths Across America ceremonies will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Dec. 18, at Lusk Cemetery, 202 Second Ave. N., Albany, and at noon at the Port Byron Veterans Memorial at the corner of Oak and Main Streets.

Lusk Cemetery, an official Wreaths Across America (WAA) location, will host a wreath-laying ceremony, joining more than 2,500 other locations across the country for National Wreaths Across America Day. Coordinated and led by local volunteers, fundraising groups have raised funds throughout the year to sponsor the placement of more than 200 veterans’ wreaths on the headstones of fallen service members laid to rest there. This is the fourth year for the wreath laying at Lusk Cemetery, and the first for Port Byron, which will host a wreath-laying ceremony only.

501(c)(3) nonprofit organization founded to continue and expand the annual wreath-laying ceremony at Arlington National Cemetery begun

by Maine businessman Morrill Worcester in 1992. The organization’s mission – Remember, Honor, Teach – is carried out in part each year by coordinating wreath-laying ceremonies in December at Arlington, as well as at thousands of veterans’ cemeteries and other locations in all 50 states and beyond.

Fundraiser to offset funeral costs for Rock Falls man Jayce Wyatt Standard was killed in Dec. 1 car crash

A fundraiser is being held to help pay the funeral expenses of a Rock Falls man killed Wednesday, Dec. 1, in a two-car collision on Sterling’s west end.

Jayce Wyatt Standard, 27, of Rock Falls, formerly known as Jennifer Standard, died of injuries suffered in the crash.

His brother, Jeremy Standard, has established a GoFundMe account at https://tinyurl. com/dr33r288.

“Jayce was a wonderful son, brother, uncle, cousin and friend to Jayce Wyatt s o m a n y p e o p l e Standard throughout his hometown and the transgender community,” Jeremy wrote. “He touched the lives of everyone around him.

“Jayce dedicated his life to helping others in any way that he could. He accomplished so many goals, including earning his GED and continuing on to Sauk Valley Community College, where he was enrolled to start his dream of becoming a counselor.”

Among others, Jayce is survived by his partner, Summer Startt; his father, Larry Standard, his mother, Nancy Standard, his brothers Jeremy, Justin and Anthony Standard and Patrick Whitmore, and his sister, Destiny Dugger.

Holidays with the Symphony concert Dec. 11 in Clinton The Clinton Symphony Orchestra’s annual Holidays with the Symphony concert is back this year. It is set for 7:30 p.m., Saturday, Dec. 11, in Vernon Cook Theater at Clinton High School.

Conductor Brian Dollinger has chosen the festive Polonaise from Russian composer Rimsky-Korsakov’s “Christmas Eve Suite” to open the program. Other music includes selections from Tchaikovsky’s “Nutcracker Suite,” Corelli’s “Christmas Concerto,” the overture to the opera “Hansel and Gretel” and several seasonal pieces by Leroy Anderson, including his popular “Sleigh Ride.”

Muscatine native Bruce Chase has compiled a group of carols from seven coun-

tries that will be featured in the concert, and the audience will be invited to join in carol singing to close the concert.

“It’s great to be back after having to cancel last year’s events,” said Robert Whipple, the executive director.

“It’s our third concert of this season and our audiences have been enthusiastic in welcoming us back.”

The orchestra is in its 68th concert season.

Tickets are available at the door. Adult admission is $20. All students are admitted free. A student may bring an accompanying adult for half-price. Cash, check and credit cards are accepted at the door.

The Clinton Symphony Orchestra is a nonprofit arts organization and operates on

ticket revenue, individual and commercial contributions, grants from foundations and civic organizations and bequests. The orchestra includes about 50 area musicians.

Other events will include a concert of chamber music on Jan. 16, a family concert on Feb. 19 and the indoor finale of the season on April 30. A free outdoor pops concert will be offered June 5.

Wild Winter Wednesday at Windmill Cultural Center program features Wide River Winery The Volunteer Educators at the Windmill Cultural Center in Fulton invite the public to attend the Wild Winter Wednesday program at 9 a.m. Wednesday, Dec. 15. There will be coffee, tea, mill treats and a program featuring Wide River Winery of Clinton.

Dorothy O’Brien began growing grapes and making wine for her family in 1997.

Her family helped the winery grow, with her daughter Liz Quinn and sisters Mar-

tha and Ceil O’Brien focusing on sales, marketing and the business side of the winery. Inspiration for many of the wine names comes from the family’s law heritage.

Dorothy is an employment law attorney and her husband, Charlie Pelton, is a retired Clinton County judge. Other lawyers in the family have contributed to the never-ending quest for top quality wine.

Thanks to many visitors and loyal wine drinkers,

sales and production have reached 85,000 bottles a year. The winery has tasting rooms in Clinton, LeClaire and Davenport, Iowa.

Christopher D. Link, 19, of Lyndon was eastbound when his car crossed the centerline and struck the westbound car driven by Standard.

Link was cited for improper lane use; the investigation continues, Booker said.

Nov. 22 Jeanne L. Dettner of Fulton was arrested for driving while license is revoked and operating a motor vehicle with a suspended registration in the 800 block of Ninth Street. She was released with a notice to appear.

Lane R. Brewster of Fulton was arrested on a Whiteside County warrant and driving while license is suspended. He was taken to the Whiteside County Jail.

After losing the 2020-21 season to COVID-19 restrictions, the 85-member Voices of Praise of the Emmanuel Reformed Church in Morrison is thrilled to be back and cordially invites the community to experience its Christmas presentation, “The Carols of Christmas - The Sequel!” It will be presented at 7 p.m. Friday, Dec. 17, and Sunday, Dec. 19, and 3 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 18, in the beautifully decorated sanctuary of Emmanuel Reformed Church, 202 E Morris, Morrison.

Under the direction of ministry coordinator Rich Criss, “Voices of Praise” is comprised of the Sanctuary Choir of Emmanuel Reformed Church as well as members of other churches. Members travel from Monticello, Iowa; Sterling; Clinton, Iowa; Chadwick; Hanover; Rock Falls; Milledgeville; Fulton;and Mt. Carroll for rehearsals. Members have come together unified under one Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, to share the story of Christmas through powerful music, the news release stated.

The concert includes medleys of beloved Christmas carols sung in a variety of musical styles. Some of the carols included are “Hark the Herald”; “O Come, O Come Emmanuel”; “Joy to the

No tickets are needed for the concert, which will be just over an hour.

There will be a freewill offering. All ages are welcome. The church is handicapped accessible. A fellowship hour, hosted by the women of Emmanuel Reformed Church, will follow all performances. A free shuttle bus will be provided one hour before and after all three performances. The shuttle bus will pick up attendees from Ebenezer Reformed Church’s parking lot just two blocks south of Emmanuel Reformed Church’s campus and drop off at the curb in front of Emmanuel.

Born: July 27, 1930 in Morrison, IL Died: November 29, 2021 in Clinton, IA RHEA BECHTEL, 91, of Fulton, IL, died Monday, November 29, 2021 at MercyOne Medical Center in Clinton, IA. Her funeral service will be held at 10:00 AM on Friday, December 3, 2021 at Spring Valley Reformed Church in Fulton, with Rev. Ralph Beidler, Pastor of Holland Heights Christian Reformed Church in Holland, MI, officiating. Visitation will be held from 4:00 PM to 6:00 PM on Thursday, December 2, 2021 at the Fulton Chapel of the Bosma-Renkes Funeral Home. Interment will be at Grove Hill Cemetery in Morrison, IL. A memorial has been established to Spring Valley Reformed Church.

Rhea was born July 27, 1930 in Morrison, IL, to Lawrence L. and Dena (Bielema) Green. She was educated in a one room rural school and graduated from Morrison High School with the class of 1948. She married Glenn Bechtel on January 26, 1949 at Spring Valley Reformed Church in Fulton. He died

in October of 2013. Rhea was employed as a bookkeeper for many years working for Fidelity Life Association, Dr. Van Riet, Garden Plain Feed Service, and did farm record keeping from home. She enjoyed spending time with her family, reading, flower gardening, bird watching, and living in a scenic rural area.

She was a life long member of the Spring Valley Reformed Church where in her younger years she taught primary Sunday School and catechism.

Survivors include three daughters, Glenda Nicke of Rock Island, IL, Ellen (Gregg) Pessman of Fulton, and Rev. Dr. Carol (Thomas Mullens) Bechtel of Holland, MI; one son, Scott (Sandi) Bechtel of Fulton; seven grandchildren, Nathan Nicke, Brian (Shawna) Nicke, Dan (Amy) Bechtel, Steve Bechtel, Jennifer (Shawn) Anton, Andrew (Melanie) Reynolds and Ellen (AJ) Tedeschi; two step grandchildren, Elyssa (Wes) Chubb and Ian (Dayna) Mullens; ten great-grandchildren; four step great-grandchildren; one sister, Connie (Burton) Wiersema of Brandon, WI; and many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, Glenn; one son, Brad Lee Bechtel in infancy; one sister, Janet C. Kooi; one brother, Dr. Lawrence J. Green.

OBITUARIES BERNITA L. BUSH

Bernita Lena Schumacher Bush was born to George and Louisa (Kahler) Schumacher on August 12, 1924. She grew up on their farm north of Morrison. Bernita attended West Clyde School for 8 years then continued on to graduate from Morrison High School in 1942.

Bernita married Robert William Bush on September 25, 1942, and were married for 50 years. Most of their lives together were spent farming north of Morrison where they raised 3 children. Bernita remained on the farm after Bob’s death in 1993. She later had a loving farm companion, Ed Dittmar, for 15 years.

Bernita was a life-long member of Bethesda Lutheran Church, being baptized there May

1926. Until recent years she was especially active with the church quilters, whose quilts were donated worldwide. Besides being a farm wife, she also worked locally at the National Tea grocery store for 19 years. At the farm, Bernita enjoyed her flowers, daylilies and hostas; she also liked to ride the lawn mower and wouldn’t let anyone help her with this task until her 90’s. When sweet corn was ready, Bernita was the first one to gather all the pans to organize the day’s work.

Bernita loved playing cards with her friends, especially pinochle and euchre. Bernita also enjoyed fishing, bird watching and traveling whenever given the opportunity.

She is the mother of three children, Larry Bush of Morrison, Carol Stadler-Brandt (H. Gary Snipes) of Manning, SC and Rodney Bush of Morrison.

Bernita has five grandchildren, Dawn Bush, Jonathon (Rhonda) Bush, Lori (Tim) Matlack, Bradley Bush, and Amy (Kevin) Kerley; four great-grandchildren; three step-great-grandchildren; four step-great-great-grandchildren.

Of her Schumacher family, she is survived by one brother, Allen (Elaine) Schumacher of Peoria; one brother-in-law, Marvin Geerts.

Bernita was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Robert; one brother, Wilmer Schumacher; one sister, Ila Jean Geerts; one grandchild, Robin Bush; two sons-in-law, George Stadler and David Brandt; two daughters-in-law, Ruth Bush and Pam Bush.

A heartfelt thank you goes to her granddaughter, Dawn, who was her special caretaker for the past several years.

DOUGLAS “DOUGIE” MONROE SMITH

(Douglass) Smith, on November 17, 1946, at his grandparents’ home in Arcadia Kansas. He lived in Bronaugh, Missouri until moving to Born: November 17, 1946 in Vernon Co., Illinois in 1954.

Missouri Doug graduated from Riverdale High School Died: December 1, 2021 in East Moline, Illinois in 1965. He proudly served as an Aviation Structural Mechanic in the United States Douglas (Dougie) Navy from 1965 to 1969. Doug was a founding Monroe Smith, member of the Hillsdale American Legion and Husband, Dad, Bonus current member of the Coe-Lamb American Dad, Grandpa and Legion Post 421.

Brother passed away Doug was a devoted Dad & the BEST BONUS at his home in East Dad. Patricia became a member of the First Baptist Church when she married Lendell.

She gave of her talents as choir director, Sunday School teacher and was the Church Secretary for twenty-five years. She was an active member of the Mary and Martha Mission Circle.

Patricia kept her family close and cherished every moment. She loved playing with her grandson and watching him grow. They were always playing tricks on one another.

Patricia enjoyed playing bridge, music of all genres, traveling with her family and attending the theater.

1981: River Bend School District copes with financial crisis 60 Years

The East Clinton school building and land were auctioned to the highest bidder, Henry Jahn, with a bid of $4,600. The Spring Valley school also was auctioned to the highest bidder, John Bielema, with a bid of $900. The two schools have merged into the Fulton Junior High and Grade School District No. 111.

“Young America Speaks,” a national essay anthology published in Los Angles, has accepted for publication the essays written by 11 Fulton High School students and submitted by English instructor Mrs. Albert Lay. Students whose essays were included are Raymond Borgman, Ronald Den Besten, Paul Dykstra, Marla Hartman, Nancy Johnson, Michael Jones, Kay Lange, Linda Mason, John Sheff, Marcia Van Vuren and David Van Heest.

C. Robert Leininger, superintendent of the River Bend Unit School District, has been chosen as a member of the board of directors of the Illinois Association of School Administrators and also has been appointed state chair-

man of the Legislative Committee of the association.

Jill Mensch has been awarded a Letter of Commendation honoring her performance on the 1971 National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test. She is a senior at Fulton Community High School and among 35,000 students in the U.S. who scored in the upper 2 percent of those who are expected to graduate from high school in 1972.

Mr. and Mrs. Robert Schneble have returned to their Fulton home after spending three months in South Korea. Mr. Schneble consulted and advised a Korean industry while Mrs. Schneble taught conversational English to some of the Korean business executives.

About 225 citizens gathered in the Fulton High School cafeteria to discuss what programs should and should not be eliminated as the River Bend School District tries to cope with a major financial crisis. While most of the speakers spoke in defense of the programs they felt should be retained, others offered suggestions for increasing revenue or reducing expenses.

Nov. 27, 1991

The Fulton Steamers advanced to the state finals by beating Monticello 14-13. The Monticello Sages were outsmarted by the Steamers, who used special plays on offense and defense to win the game. Steamers fans swarmed the field immediately after the final buzzer amid clouds of Steamers confetti.

Tara Damhoff was the recipient of the Morrison Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution Good Citizen Award. She was chosen by the faculty of the senior class as the Fulton High School senior who best exemplified outstanding qualities of leadership, dependability, service and patriotism in the home, school and community.

Gary Stockton of the Illinois State Historical Library presented Deb Duhr, librarian at the Fulton library, and Neal Luker, a member of the Fulton Historical Society, with microfilm and old issues of the Fulton Journal.

The microfilm was made possible by a grant, the Dreamweaving Grant Series,

through the River Bend Library system.

Neal and Jane Orman-Luker have been chosen as hosts for this year’s 2001 Fulton Christmas Walk. Each year someone is chosen for his/her involvement and service to the community.

The Fulton Fire/EMS Department held its annual Christmas party and awards banquet. Members who have gone above and beyond the call of duty were honored for their service with special awards – Firefighter of the Year, Steve Woods; First Responder of the Year, Tammy Becker; and EMT of the Year, Shelly Giannetto. Fire Chief Joe Michaelsen and EMS Coordinator Dave Rogis handed out the awards.

Domestic violence: What to do to ensure your safety

BY STEPHEN D. HARRISON, M.D. Domestic violence is a growing concern in our society. It is abuse by a spouse or intimate partner. There are many forms such as physical, sexual and emotional abuse, which may include threats, constant criticisms and putdowns. Other controlling activities such as access to money and privileges also may be abuse behavior.

Three basic questions should be answered by all partners. First, have you been hit, kicked, punched or otherwise hurt by someone in the past year?

Two, do you feel safe in your relationship? Three, is there a partner from a previous relationship who is making you feel unsafe? If it is not clear after answering these questions that you have a safe relationship, seek help and counseling.

Violence against a partner or child is a crime in all 50 states. Each year at least 2 million women are abused in this country. Abuse may happen to people of all races, ages, religions and those rich or poor. People who are hurt or victims do not cause the violence or abuse.

Abuse may sometimes begin and

increase during pregnancy. Alcohol and drugs may aggravate the process.

First, you need to ensure the safety of your children as well as yourself. Go to a safe place, such as the home of a friend or relative or an emergency shelter, and take the children with you.

Call the police if you think you cannot leave home safely. You may need to press charges against your partner. In fact, if you have ever thought about reporting your partner but have not, you are living in a dangerous situation.

While many people fear reporting domestic violence, not reporting may

be the biggest danger. Emergency shelters can help you file a court order of protection.

Emergency shelters can provide counseling with support groups for you and your children. Emergency rooms also can direct you, as may your doctor. It is very important for you to be direct with medical personnel, nurses, physicians, emergency room personnel, etc., as many measures may look like abuse and not be unless you are being specific.

Erie High School announces Illinois State Scholars Erie High School Principal Tim McConnell announced that nine students from the Erie High School graduating class of 2022 have been designated as Illinois State Scholars.

The Illinois Student Assistance Commission, the state’s college access and financial aid agency, presents this recognition of academic achievement annually to exceptional Illinois high school students. This year, more than 17,340 honorees join the other outstanding students who have been honored since the designation was first introduced in 1958.

“I am so very proud of this group of students and their teachers,” McConnell said. “They had their in-person schooling end during their sophomore year on March 13, 2020, and returned as juniors in a hybrid model.

They showed an incredible commitment to their education and continued to strive for excellence during a very difficult time in their high school career. Congratulations to all!”

Prophetstown Cub Scouts exceed food drive goal

Cub Scouts Pack 332 of Prophetstown collected a whopping 2,312 pounds of food in November, with a delivery made to the Prophetstown Food Pantry on Nov. 22. The Scouts had collection boxes set up at Ann’s Hair Salon, Farmers National Bank, 1st Gateway Credit Union, Prophetstown Post Office, Envy Boutique, Prophetstown Elementary School and Tampico Elementary School.

The Scouts also held a “Food Drive Battle” between Prophetstown and Tampico Elementary Schools, with Tampico getting the win and a popcorn party for the most pounds collected. Between the two schools, kids and staff members donated more than 2,000 pounds of food, shattering previous records.

The Scouts had a goal of collecting 500 pounds and the generosity of the community exceeded their expectations. The Scouts are grateful for all the support to help provide delicious holiday meals to those in need in the community.

IDOT has improved online winter road condition map SAUK VALLEY MEDIA

SPRINGFIELD – The Illinois Department of Transportation has an improved winter road condition map at gettingaroundillinois.com.

Instead of showing conditions by county, the map will reflect road conditions for each of the 120 snow-and-ice removal team jurisdictions. Snowplow drivers report road conditions through a cloud-based system that updates the

map.

Conditions on interstates and U.S. routes will have a priority status and appear more prominently on the map.

“Illinois winters are notorious for changing quickly and drastically, sometimes over just a few miles. These improvements to Getting Around Illinois will give travelers information that’s more reliable and more local,” Illinois Transportation Secretary Omer Osman said in a news release. “I

urge you to bookmark and regularly check this valuable resource to help you stay safe and prepared throughout the winter.”

IDOT has posted a video on youtube. com showing how users can make good use of the interactive map. Users who enter “IDOT Winter Road Conditions Map Tutorial” into a browser search will be directed to the youtube link.

The winter road conditions map is available for both desktop computers

and smartphones.

As an indication of its popularity, the website gets more than 2.5 million page views each year. The website includes the ability to identify and zoom into a location, travel route or destination, as well as look up information on construction projects and others identified for improvement in IDOT’s multiyear program.

Church of the Cross to host cookie walk and craft bazaar

Church of the Cross United Methodist Church is planning and prepping for its annual Holiday Cookie Walk and Craft Bazaar on from 9 a.m. to noon (or until gone) Saturday, Dec. 11, at 22621 Routes 2 and 92, Port Byron.

Parishioners will have their usual large assortment of cookies and candies for sale at $7 per pound. Everything will be prepackaged in small and large quantities of the same item or assorted for a variety of selection.
