Self Help Enterprises honors clients, volunteers at annual banquet

cbielema@shawmedia.com ROCK FALLS – Self Help Enterprises in Sterling celebrated its Client Awards Banquet on Wednesday, honoring its volunteers, partners and clients at a luncheon at the McCormick Event Center in Rock Falls.

Self Help Executive Director Pam Fluck presented awards in several categories to clients and awarded pins marking years of service. The pins were given for milestones reached in 2021, 2022 and 2023, as the last banquet was held three years ago.

Awards and their recipients include: • Mary Judd Award: Kelli Poggnesee and Jim Svoboda. The award is given to an individual who has proved that a good attitude makes a big difference.

• Harry Dixon Award: Kenny Wright is the 2023 Production recipient. Tim Hurd is the 2023 Programming recipient.

The award recognizes an individual who has excelled in the production area and another who has excelled at programming.

• Wheelchair Award: Joe Long. This award is given in memory of Susie Hopper, who was Miss Wheelchair of Illinois in 1980 and 1981.

• Walter Gronner Best Worker Award: Patty Salmon and Marcus Sleck. This award is presented to someone with an inner drive to be the best they can be.

• Doris Hammett Award: Doris Clark and Ontario “Mooka” Allen. Hammett

was a member of the Self Help Board of Directors for many years. The award is given to someone who, despite the adversity they face, continues to exhibit a positive attitude day in and day out.

• John Stern Leadership Award: Jimmy Booth. This award is presented to the man that most displays leadership to all of Self Help’s clients and staff.

• Carla Haubrich Leadership Award: Sabrina Linton. The award is presented to the woman who displays leadership to all of Self Help’s clients and staff. Haubrich died in 2020. This was the first Leadership Award presented in Haubrich’s name.

• Frances Bragg Award: Whitney Cushing, Christin Smith and Jason O’Neil. The award is given to those who display perseverance, never give up and show concern and love for their fellow workers.

• Developmental Training Award: Ramona Coffin and Kenny Coy. • Happy Go Lucky Award: Kayla Baeza. The award is given to the person who brightens everyone’s day and has a smile for all.

• Volunteer of the Year Award: Roger Meiers. Meiers works daily with clients in the greenhouse, showing them what it takes to grow flowers and vegetables and how to care for them.

• 2023 Community Partner of the Year Award: The Sterling Park District, which has allowed Self Help to use their facilities for organized activities. The clients have used the basketball courts and

weight machines and played kickball among many activities there.

• The GOAT [Greatest of All Time] Award: Ontario “Mooka” Allen. This award goes to a client who went above and beyond in one way or another. Staff members nominate one client each month and it is from those nominations that an honoree is chosen. Those nominated alongside Allen were Marcus Sleck, Whitney Cushing, Jimmy Booth, Kenny Wright, Kelly Poggnesee, Virginia Wood and Ramona Coffin.

Self Help is a 58-year-old agency that serves individuals with disabilities by providing employment, residential services, community day services, early intervention programs, community-based events and home-based services, according to its website. It was incorporated on July 16, 1965, originating in the basement of the Rock Falls Presbyterian Church with five physically disabled individuals. They made birdhouses and sold them in the community.

The Rev. James Crangle, founder of the agency, gradually found other work and they were able to rent space in an old dairy on East Third Street, and from there, moved to 609 W. Third St., Sterling. In 1979, Self Help was awarded a federal grant to construct its existing building. This space has been added on to three times and a recycling building has been erected at the edge of the west parking lot. Throughout its history, Self Help has been driven to “Turn Challenges into Opportunities.”

Blood drive scheduled in Tampico Since announcing a national blood and platelet shortage a month ago, thousands of donors across the country have rolled up a sleeve to help rebuild the American Red Cross blood and platelet supply.

As that generosity continues, the Red Cross must collect 10,000 additional blood and platelet donations – over and above expectations – each week over the next month to sufficiently meet hospital needs. Donors of all blood types are urged to book a time to give now, especially those with type O blood or those giving platelets.

To encourage more blood and platelet donations, the Red Cross is offering new incentives to donors over the next month.

cbielema@shawmedia.com MORRISON – After three months of discussion, a motion to remove traffic signals at a Morrison intersection screeched to a halt in front of a full audience Oct. 10.

After Morrison Mayor Scott Vandermyde read a resolution to remove traffic signals at Genesee Street and U.S. Route 30, no one on the City Council seconded a motion to consider the item. The council’s silence in effect tabled the issue. It was the second meeting in a row in which the council did not move forward when formally presented an agenda item that could have led to a vote.

Earlier, residents spoke out during the public comment portion of the meeting, with some supporting the removal and others against it. Had the council approved the removal process, it would have directed Vandermyde and City Administrator Brian Melton to initiate the removal process with the Illinois Department of Transportation.

The council has been discussing the issue for the past few months. The age of the traffic lights, the city’s responsibility for them and poor timing are the reasons behind considering their removal. If removed, city officials said, IDOT would require traffic flow changes because of a poor line of site for vehicles turning from Genesee onto Route 30.

The 200 block of Genesee would become a southbound one-way street from Route 30 to Main Street, while the 300 block of Genesee would become a northbound one-way street from Route 30 to Knox Street. That would prevent motorists from turning east or west onto Route 30 or crossing the intersection.

Complicating the discussions have been talks about closing the 200 block of Genesee Street to traffic and possibly developing that stretch into a place for downtown events or a community gathering space.

“So everything that I’ve heard from people who have called me, not in regard to the light, but in regard to fixing that intersection, I’ve been against the removal of the light the whole time,” West said. “The whole time, I’ve said, ‘Yes, we do need to fix that intersection.’ I don’t disagree with that at all. I think we should move forward with fixing the intersection. It floods badly. It’s not handicap (accessible). It’s ugly. I get that.

Let’s, for now, move on from the lights. A lot of people have spoken about it.

“But let’s improve that intersection. There’s a lot of other ways to improve it.”

Council member Sidonna Mahaffey asked Vandermyde and Melton when the idea of removing the stop-

light was first mentioned.

“So here’s my question because this has never been made clear to me,” Mahaffey said. “Did an engineer recommend the removal of those stoplights? Or did someone at the city or whoever say, ‘Hey, we want to remove these stoplights?’ Like where did this idea even come from? How did this become a thing?

“Maybe I’m missing the boat and I’m still standing on the dock. But did the engineer recommend it for issues?

Or did the city say to the engineers ‘What would it be to remove these lights?’ I think that’s one of the disconnects that a lot of people are having – myself included.”

Melton said the City Council has been considering improving the intersection since at least 2015.

“This isn’t a new idea,” he said, adding that closing the street and

removing the stoplights are ideas that surfaced while discussing potential improvements to the intersection. “It just became one of those conversation pieces during a spitballing conversation.”

Vandermyde said the idea to close the 200 block of North Genesee Street and turning it into a public spot surfaced in 2018, when work was being planned to upgrade Main Street.

“We started relooking at that when we completed Main Street and I got into the mayor’s office,” he said.

Vandermyde said he contacted IDOT to see what would be required to remove the traffic lights, an engineering study was conducted and the idea was presented to council.

Melton said the council next will be presented with an intersection improvement plan for future consideration.

Marijuana cultivation center coming to Fulton

FULTON – Ground was broken last week on a marijuana grow operation in the Fulton Industrial Park.

Davenport, Iowa-based developer and Fulton Industrial LLC owner Dan Dolan, owner of The Dispensary and Rec Room, paid the city $814,750 for slightly less than 60 acres of vacant land at 31st Avenue and Fourth Street, according to Whiteside County property records.

Dolan did not return text or phone messages Friday seeking more information.

Illinois has 21 cultivation centers.

This would be the 22nd, the Department of Agriculture said.

The Dispensary, which sells medical marijuana, opened July 1, 2016, at 1801 16th Ave., in what was then the new Fulton Crossing Development on the southeast corner of Routes 136 and 84.

Dolan owns the building.

The Rec Room, which sells recreational marijuana, opened May 14, 2021, in the space next door.

Dolan, who owns and operates Dan Dolan Homes Inc., also owns The Dispensary in East Dubuque, another border town along the Mississippi, which opened May 15, 2021.

Ruth was born September 17, 1925, in Morrison, IL, to Henry and Cornelia (Dykema) Smith. She attended Morrison Grade Schools and was a graduate of Morrison High School.

She married Ralph H. Adolph on November 14, 1947, in Morrison, IL. Throughout Ruth’s

career, she dedicated herself to the service of others. She was a trusted professional in admissions and insurance for Morrison Hospital and later continued working in the field of insurance for Dr. Vandermyde’s office.

Ruth’s faith was an essential part of her life, as she was a lifelong member of Ebenezer Reformed Church in Morrison. She actively participated in the church choir, engaged in Bible studies, was a member of the Philathia Society and Hand Quilting Ladies of Ebenezer.

She enjoyed worldwide travel, playing bridge and reading.

Survivors include one son, Ryan Adolph of Saugatuck, MI; two grandchildren, Anne (Chris) Mills of Morrison, IL, and Wayne (Stacy) Temple of San Diego, CA; three great-grandchildren, Violet, Sam, and Amelia Mills.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Ralph; one daughter Laurie Adolph; two sisters, Lorraine Workman and Helen in infancy; three brothers, Robert and Arnold Smith and Edward Smith in infancy.

STERLING – Over the next 18 to 24 months, CGH Medical Center will undergo major construction involving the entrance, lobby, admitting department, Auxiliary gift shop and the CGH Cafe.

The 20,000-square-foot project will enhance and modernize the most dated parts of the hospital and will provide a number of changes that include: • Expanded, comfortable lobby seating.

• Improved patient flow and a more welcoming environment in the lobby area, as well as a more private and confidential admitting/discharge experience.

• A new reception area.

• Improved security surveillance.

• Family/patient consultation rooms.

• Upgrades and renovations to the CGH Cafe and the cafeteria seating area.

“This project is really about ensuring that our patients have the best experience we can possibly provide from the minute they walk in our doors,” said Cindy Zander, CGH vice president of Support Services. “We want them to feel welcome and relaxed in an environment that reflects the high quality of care and service we offer.”

Phase 1 was completed in June with a remodel of the Ryberg Auditorium and classrooms. In July, Phase 2 began with temporarily relocating the admitting department and CGH Auxiliary offices to the classrooms. Construction also started on the new Auxiliary gift shop housed in the former admitting space.

Phase 2 will continue through spring 2024. This will include the construction of a new addition at the hospital’s main entrance and will feature an atrium with expanded lobby space, as well as space to incorporate

increased security protection measures for staff and patients.

CGH’s Main Entrance is closed and all patient and visitor arrivals will be redirected through the west entrance.

Here are some important reminders: • The patient/visitor parking lot for the CGH main entrance will be blocked off.

• The main entrance lobby doors are closed. Patients and visitors should park in the lot near the west entrance, located between Locust Street and First Avenue. Visitors also can park in the east lot and use the east entrance, which faces Second Avenue.

“Other than the exterior addition, which will be built by outside general contractor Winter Construction, all in-house construction during this project is being completed by our internal CGH Plant Operations and Maintenance staff,” Zander said.

The POM staff are the 24/7 in-house professionals responsible for the construction, groundskeeping, painting, lighting, plumbing, electrical, HVAC systems and routine maintenance of CGH’s health-care facilities.

“As a not-for-profit community hospital, our administration and board are always mindful that we must be good stewards of our resources,” Zander said. “We are proud to say that by utilizing our amazing POM staff for a majority of this project, we save millions of dollars in construction costs.”

“We are continually looking for ways to enhance CGH and our patient experiences and many times this means adding new technology or providing new services,” said Dr. Paul Steinke, CGH president and CEO. “However, the last renovations in our cafeteria and lobby were completed in 1986 and 1988, so we are long overdue in revitalizing and investing in these areas of the facility for our patients and staff now and into the future.”

1963: Liquor license suspended briefly at cafe for diluting liquor 60 Years

Merlin Howe, a Whiteside County conservation officer, has been selected to receive one of four coveted Conservation Officers’ Awards to be given jointly by the Izaak Walton League and the Sears Roebuck Foundation. Howe has been invited to be a guest at the state convention Oct. 19-20 at the Izaak Walton League clubhouse in Elgin. The plaque will be presented at a banquet Saturday. During the selection of men to be honored, judges’ decisions were based on nominations submitted by individuals or clubs, supplemented by endorsements or other supporting evidence of achievement.

The liquor license of Bush’s Cafe, operated by George Bush, has been suspended for a seven-day period as a result of an investigation by Federal Alcohol Tax Unit agents, according to news reports from Chicago. The investigation into charges that Bush was diluting liquor resulted in the seven-day suspension. Liquor was confiscated by federal authorities and tested by government chemists, who reported contents of the liquor bottles were not the same as represented on the bottles’ labels.

Petitions are being circulated for seven Fulton residents seeking to be commissioners of the new Fulton Park District, which will be voted on in a

special election. The seven candidates are Stanley Borgman, Edwin Kolk, Harold Shear, Steven Stuart, George Busch, Miss Peggy Hand and Leon DeWeerdt. The park district plan has won the support of virtually all civic and service clubs in Fulton.

Members of the Mississippi Misses 4-H Club of Fulton and their leader, Mrs. Martin Salisbury, assembled a window display that won a blue ribbon in a countywide contest with 31 other clubs. After the blue ribbon win, which was judged by a points system, the club also received a fourth-place win countywide.

The River Bend School District is considering legal action in an effort to recover about $70,000, which Supt.

Martin Kinert believes is owed to the district by the Truck Equipment Co. of Peoria. In a letter to the Peoria firm, Kinert said the arrangement for the company to buy back buses at 83% of their original cost to the district has not been complied with by the company.

Two longtime teachers in the River Bend School District were recognized for their many years of service by the school board. Mrs. Gary Orman, a school board member, presented plaques to Mrs. Evelyn Dolan, who taught for many years at the Albany school, and Mrs. Marjorie Kisthard, who taught in Fulton.

30 Years

Oct. 13, 1993

Bill Brinkman, the president of the Fulton Chamber of Commerce, announced that Joe Woith, the city administrator for Fulton, has been appointed to fill a vacancy on the board of directors of the Chamber.

Woith will assume his position on the board immediately. He is filling the vacancy left by Michael Hand, who resigned from the board a few months ago.

Navy Petty Officer Second Class Thomas Warner, the son of Thelma and Thomas Warner Sr., recently received the Meritorious Unit Commendation along with his shipmates aboard the aircraft carrier USS Theodore Roosevelt. The ship’s home port is in Norfolk, Virginia.

20 Years

Oct. 15, 2003

David Olsen, a sixth grade student at River Bend Middle School, has been accepted to become a student ambassador with People to People, traveling to Australia next summer. He received a nominating letter, attended the informational meeting at Augustana College, submitted his application and participated in an interview in Milan.

He received word Sept. 30 that he was accepted into the program. Ian Anglese, a seventh grade student from Albany, also will be going to Australia but not with the same group.

Modern Woodmen of America pre-

sented the Community Service Recognition award to both Joe Kaecker and Tyson Fresh Meats of Joslin. Kaecker has worked with Tyson since 1987 and is a maintenance supervisor. Both Kaecker and Tyson were given plaques and certificates along with a gift basket. They have been a supporter of programs put on by the community such as National Night Out on Crime, D.A.R.E. and also the bike rodeos.

Tyson also has been instrumental in donations to the programs.

10 Years Oct. 16, 2013

The Illinois Retired Teachers Association Foundation awarded $15,000 in grant money to several public school educations (pre-K-12) in northern Illinois counties. IRTAF is affiliated with the Illinois Retired Teachers Association, a lobbying group for retired educators with a membership of more than 35,000.

Deanna Leonhardt of River Bend Middle School was awarded a $450 IRTAF grant.

In preparation for the Fall Festival, members of the Kiwanis Club and Key Club, led by their adviser Mike Ankrom, cleaned up Highway 84 between Highway 136 and Highway 30 and also picked up trash on the bike path. The group performs this cleanup twice a year. They are certified with the Whiteside County Highway Department as an “official” Keep Whiteside County Beautiful group.

Lupus is one of the many autoimmune conditions in which the body’s immune system creates too much inflammation, which may affect many organ tissues.

This includes the skin, along with joints and kidneys, the brain, heart, lungs and even blood cells.

The diagnosis often is delayed because of the overlap of other more common conditions. The classic presentation includes a rash that looks like a butterfly rash on both cheeks.

Some people have inherited a tendency to develop the condition. Sometimes medicines and even sunlight can be a trigger, but often the cause is unknown.

The condition is characterized by episodic flares that come and go.

Classic common findings include

fever with fatigue and joint pain and swelling, along with the butterfly rash and other skin lesions.

Shortness of breath, dry eyes and headache also may come into play. The condition is far more common in women between the ages of 15 and 45. It is especially common in African Americans, Hispanics and Asian Americans.

Kidney failure can be advanced to the point of causing death because of lupus. The impacted brain may lead to dizziness, headaches, behavior changes, strokes and seizures.

There may be difficulty expressing your thoughts. The lungs may be affected, making breathing difficult and pneumonia more likely. Heart disease increases as well. Women who are pregnant have an increased risk of miscarriage.

No single test will diagnose lupus. Common tests performed include a complete blood count and a sedimentation rate, along with kidney functions, a urine specimen and a special test known as anti-nuclear antibodies. Most people with lupus have a positive ANA test.

The treatment depends on the severity and location. Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatories may be involved. Like other rheumatology conditions, antimalarial drugs, such as hydroxychloroquine, may be used. Prednisone and other steroids may be employed. Immunosuppressants may be prescribed as well, which increase the risk of infection. Biologics are becoming more common for treatment.

This condition normally is followed by specialists.

The Medicare Open Enrollment period begins annually Oct. 15 and runs through Dec. 7. During this time, people with Medicare have the opportunity to review, renew and/or change their Medicare health or drug plan for the upcoming year.

To help beneficiaries compare available plans and make an informed decision about which option best meets their needs, Illinois’ Senior Health Insurance Program provides trusted, unbiased, Medicare counseling at no cost to people with Medicare, their family members and caregivers. Counseling services are offered at more than 300 locations statewide.

Morrison couple to share story of Morocco trip on Oct. 19

By ANNE FRAME The Odell Public Library is offering interesting programs on a variety of topics: literature, art, history, travel and more.

On Thursday, Oct. 19, Jim and Ann Camp of Morrison will present a fascinating travelogue program titled “A Land of Surprises,” which will feature Morocco and all its surprises.

The program will begin at 6:30 p.m. in the Program Room at Odell.

Ann Camp said as a kid she dreamed of going to Europe because “rich people” lived there. The “travel bug” has taken Jim and Ann to all seven continents, from Antarctica to the Sahara to the Alps and more.

They chose Morocco for its sights and intrigue.

Marrakesh, in western Morocco,

was one of their favorites. Founded in 1070, it was a former imperial city.

The walled-in square with its mazelike alleys is densely packed with people surveying the traditional pottery, textiles and jewelry sold in the souks (markets).

Leaving the city behind, the Sahara Dessert was another favored spot.

Their visit to a Bedouin family, who were part of the nomadic tribe that

lives in the Sahara, was fascinating, they said. Of course, they rode camels while in the Sahara.

Jim and Ann will share all this and much more with a Power Point presentation of their photos.

All are invited to join in this journey into this “land of surprises.”

There is no charge for the event.

Donations to the library are welcome.

Support the Clinton Area Showboat Theatre with a trivia night fundraiser Saturday, Oct. 21, at Triple Play, 1601 Ninth Ave. in Fulton.

Teams will consist of six to eight players. Cost is $10 a person. Players must register and pay at the door. Doors open at 7 p.m. and trivia begins at 7:30.

Erie Fire Protection District barbecue fundraiser is Oct. 21

A drive-thru barbecue fundraiser will take place at the Erie Fire Station on Saturday, Oct. 21. Cost is by donation.

Meals will begin at 5 p.m. and will be served until sold out.

The menu includes pulled pork sandwiches, baked potato, pickle spear, and macaroni and cheese or baked beans.

Wee Naturalists programs at Odell Library

The University of Illinois Extension Wee Naturalists, in partnership with the Odell Public Library, will have fun, interactive programs for youth ages 3-6. Come and explore environmental education topics through stories, activities, crafts and outdoor exploration.

Each program will be from 1 to 2:30 p.m. at the Odell Public Library, 307 S. Madison St. in Morrison.

Pumpkins will be the topic of the program on Saturday, Oct. 21.

WHOA is having a drive-thru only community appreciation chili supper from 5 to 6:30 p.m. or until the chili is gone. They will be serving chili and freshly baked cinnamon rolls from Harvest Bakery & More and providing hot apple cider, hot chocolate and bottled water. The event will be at the Whiteside County Fairgrounds Livestock Pavilion.

This is a community appreciation event but donation always are welcome.

Free genealogy workshop Oct. 28 in Sterling

A free genealogy workshop will take place at 10 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 28, at the Sterling Public Library, 103 W. Third St. in Sterling.

Jane Gregga will be the presenter. She is the 2023-24 Illinois state co-chairman for lineage research and past regent of the Eli Skinner Chapter, National Society of the Daughters of the American Revolution.

The Senior Health Insurance Program is a free statewide health insurance counseling service for Medicare beneficiaries and their caregivers.

Several new things are taking place in Medicare for 2024. Local SHIP counselor Kathy Schmidt can answer questions about Medicare, Medicaid, enrollment, drug plan information and more.

Open enrollment appointments will be from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Mondays and Tuesdays through Dec. 7 at Gateway Credit Union, 200 N. Base St., Morrison.

The Ancestor Project As one of the final projects of the previous school year, seventh graders at Erie Middle School were challenged to pick an ancestor or someone else they could research and learn more about and write a story telling about their life. Students conducted interviews with family members and some were able to gather additional resources and pictures to help tell their story. While there were many great stories written, not all will be published.

The project was a collaborative effort between students’ history classes with Mrs. Kruthoff and Mr. Armstrong, English class with Mrs. Wolf, and their families. It was inspired by the original project that longtime English teacher Mrs. Wiersema made a tradition in her eighth grade class.

Students enjoyed getting to know more about their families and many were surprised to learn how interesting their families were. We hope you enjoy their stories, too!

Bang! That’s the sound my paternal papa hears everyday working as a pipefitter. He is a brave grandpa and father. He is talented in every way. He is the glue that keeps the Russell family together. Marty is a strong individual because of his childhood, the events of his adult life and the many experiences of his life.

Marty is a strong individual because of the upbringing he had in his childhood. Marty is my paternal grandfather. He was born on Aug. 6, 1964, in Morrison. His parents are Sylvia (Sanders) Russell and David Russell. His siblings are Tony, Dave and his twin brother Matt. Marty moved to Erie at a very young age. At the time,

there was no preschool so he went right into kindergarten. Marty went to Erie schools his entire school career.

His favorite thing to do as a child was to build forts with his twin brother Matt in the woods by Heritage Park.

They lived nearby. At around the age of 15 in 1978, Marty was approached by serial killer John Wayne Gacy at a bus stop in Chicago. He was luckily not harmed by him. Marty was a B average student and is still very intelligent to this day. For sports, Marty played football, wrestled and participated in track. In track, he was a pole vaulter.

He was very good as a track athlete.

He was a fast runner and great at relays. As a junior in high school, Marty met his high school sweetheart, Julie (Mortenson) Russell. They were instantly inseparable. As you can see, Marty Russell is a strong individual because of the experiences of his childhood.

Not only did Marty’s childhood affect who he is, but so did his adult life. At the age of 17, he signed up for the military and took an early entrance exam. He went to Naval Station Great Lakes Training Center in Chicago.

Marty and Julie then moved to San Diego, California, where he was stationed in the Navy in May 1981 to May 1985. He was on two ships: USS Tarawa LHA-1CV63 and USS Kitty Hawk CV-63. At 18, Marty married Julie at the Erie Christian Church on April 8, 1983. The same year he left the Navy, his daughter Brooke Russell was born.

Marty was working in a meat production factory called Iowa Beef Processors as a repair mechanic. In his free time, Marty started a rock band called KwikTrik. Marty and Julie went on their first vacation together in 1986 to Georgia and in the same year they went to New York. In 1989, Marty and Julie had their son, Eric (my

father), who at 20 months old became hearing impaired. That year, Marty was a foremost packing employee at a pork processing facility. About five years later, in 1994 until present, he works at Williams & White Co. in the hydraulics field. In 2003, he started MC’ing the Great River Tug with his twin brother Matt after a few years of tugging himself. He is still the MC today.

His best friend was his twin brother Matt. They were very close in their adult lives. They always did everything together, including MC’ing Tug Fest, aka The Great River Tug, since the 2000s and hosting an event called Russellstock, where people would sing, cook out and gather. Fast-forward into the early 2000s. Marty had always loved going to Jimmy Buffet concerts and Chicago Bears games. In 2006, Marty and Julie went to Key West and met Captain Tony Tarracino. Until 2010, he played in the bands Mr. Bone and Evil Twin. That same year, Marty’s granddaughter, Kaycee Brooke, was born on March 23. She (I) was his first grandchild. Marty has had many experiences that have shaped the person he is today.

Marty’s life is strongly influenced by his childhood and adult life experiences. While working at Williams & White Co., he has made many friends.

His daughter Brooke played softball and he has always loved watching me play softball. When he can’t enjoy watching my games, he is upset. In 2012, he built an underground pool and loves taking care of it. Many memories have been made with Marty in the pool and patio. In 2018, he started having heart problems and a heart murmur. He had heart surgery that year, which fixed him up. That year, a little before that surgery, his second grandchild Madison Faye was born on

Feb. 20. A few years later, in 2021, his third grandchild named Cannon Reed was born on June 12.

Since 2022, he has played in a rock band whose name is still a work in progress. He loves singing. He does it all the time. It’s one of his favorite things to do. In July 2022, his twin brother Matt passed away. In 2023, his fourth grandchild named Devyn Quinn was born on March 3. Marty is still going strong today. The accomplishments and activities of Marty have helped to shape who he is today.

My papa is a very good person and I look up to him every day. I learned many good things he’s done in life that impacted himself and others. I see how good of a man he is and the many awesome things he’s done and survived through. I feel closer to my papa because I know so much more about him and how awesome he is and was before me. I learned from his experiences that I should always keep working hard and make a good influence on the people who will look up to me later in life or at any time. I feel a lot better about doing this project since I was a little bummed about having to do it, but now it’s teaching me a lot of things about my papa. Life lessons that I learned from doing this project is to be good, do good and take advantage of your opportunities. My grandpa, Marty Ray Russell, is a strong individual and I have loved getting to know him deeper.

Marty Russell, my paternal grandfather, is a strong individual. Marty’s childhood contributed to the strong individual he is. Additionally, his adult life also impacted the person he is. Marty’s life is going well and he is happy. Marty Ray Russell is the glue that is keeping the Russell family together and it will forever make him known to many.

“Since they were 1A last year, we would have let them in,” Eller said. “But I talked to their coach and he said they decided to concentrate on 2A competition instead.”

Losing other schools that have increased in enrollment have dampened the luster, such as former entrant Sandwich with the top female runner in 2A. For the girls, the top local finisher was Erie-Prophetstown in sixth place among 16 teams. E-P has never qualified for the state meet and coach Liz Green is hopeful that will change.

“We need to stay healthy, have a good mindset and work together,” Green said. “What helps is that they are really good friends and build each other up.”

It was two freshmen leading the way, with Sarah Link clocking a 20:20 to place 20th. Jessie DeNeve was 30th at 21:18 among 133 competitors.

“I was terrified,” Link said. “I wasn’t sure I would run this meet with my hip and shins bothering me, but glad I did.”

For Shaw Local News Network AMBOY – Although it doesn’t have the same prestige it once did, the Amboy Columbus Day Cross Country meet celebrated its 50th anniversary with Eureka claiming titles in both the boys and girls races.

“Outside of Peoria (site of the state meet), this was perhaps the premier Class A meet and had been for most of the years,” said Dale Eller, former coach at Amboy and longtime observer of the race.

The brainstorm of former Amboy math teacher and cross country coach Bruce Wall, the event began because school was out on Columbus Day and no meets were to be found anywhere.

“We used to have 60-70 schools, including one time I remember nine of the top 10 teams in the state,” Eller said.

“Schools from all over Illinois wanted to come here to see how they stacked up against the best in the state.”

On the boys side, Erie-Prophetstown continued its impressive season with fifth place out of 18 teams. Considering Lucas Dreisbach (hip), Wyatt Goossens (hamstring) and Zane Romero (knee) were out with minor aches, E-P demonstrated depth.

Top runner Charlie Link took sixth with a time of 15:55. The winner was Patrick Hilby (15:21) of Aurora Central Catholic, who took second last year.

“I was just going for time,” said Link, a senior who ran the Amboy meet for the first time in his career after injury and COVID-19 derailments. “I wanted to gain some dependence on running hills and get ready for Oregon (1A sectional). I’m 100% healthy.”

Close behind E-P in team scoring was Newman in sixth. Eureka nipped Elmwood/Brimfield 43-52 for the championship, with E-P tallying 134 points and Newman 183.

“I’m happy with the first two guys (Lucas Simpson and Lucas Schaab) and I think 3-4-5 were OK,” Newman coach Pat Warkins said. “We’re peaking at the right time.”

Simpson moved up from 17th last year to take 12th with a time of 16:26. There were 155 entrants.

“The weather cooling down helps,” Simpson said. “It also helps having everyone back and healthy.”

Schaab’s 16:36 time was good for 17th. That was an improvement of 10 spots from 2022.

Morrison’s Brady Anderson scored on runs of 44 and 25 yards and teammate Carson Strating scored on runs of 8 and 26 yards. Chase Newman added a 28-yard touchdown run and Reynolds Reavy and Zach Milder each scored on short touchdown runs for the Mustangs.
