Landscape project completed at Riverside Cemetery

The parking area around the Riverside Cemetery Building at 113 High St. will soon be in bloom with a plethora of flowers after a major landscaping project was recently completed.

Prophetstown Township Supervisor Myron Hofmeister said the landscaping, which includes 60 new plants and trees around the building, cost about $10,000, with cemetery ground crews doing the labor.

Incorporated into the landscaping design are numerous white limestone slabs salvaged from the old Doc Robinson house on Lafayette Street that recently was demolished. The foundation and basement walls were constructed with limestone blocks from the nearby quarry, and new property owner Carolyn Hohenboken agreed to donate a portion of the blocks to the cemetery to bring a historical connection to the landscape project.

“We continue to make it nice for the community. It’s a community building, and we want everyone to be proud of it,” said Hofmeister, who also recognized the grounds crew for planting flowers in the cast iron urns before moving on to the new landscape project.

The Riverside building is the result of a gift from the Cleora J. Roth estate. Cleo, as she was known to family and friends, was born April 28, 1930, and died Oct. 26, 2016, at her family home at 312 W. Third St. in Prophetstown. Riverside Cemetery shared Cleo’s estate with the Henry C. Adams Memorial Library on Third Street in Prophetstown.

Cleo’s grandfather Henry C. Adams and his brother, Fred, started the Eclipse Lawn Mower Co. on Locust Street in 1904, which was in operation until 1950. Cleo’s mother Florence, her grandmother Minnie Adams and uncles John and Robert Adams presented Prophetstown with the Henry C. Adams Memorial Library in 1929. It was built at a cost of $40,000.

For 40 years, Cleo and her mother Florence Roth raised and trained show horses on Star Genius Farm, the family farm located southeast of Prophetstown on Lyndon Road. Her show trunk is on display in the Riverside Cemetery Building.

NEWS BRIEFS Tampico Days Home Run Derby sign up

Swing for the fences and sign up for Tampico’s very own home run competition or come on out to watch the action on Saturday, July 16, starting at 9 a.m. during Tampico Days.

Organizers will have a youth division battling for prizes, with kids ages 13 and under hitting from second base and youth ages

14-17 hitting from home plate.

No entry fee is required for youth.

The cost for adults 18+ is $10 per person, paid on event day.

First place will receive a 100% pay out. Adults will hit from home plate.

The annual Farmer’s Rock Throwing Classic featured “gerplunking,” targeting and skipping competitions on the Rock River on Sunday, July 3. The classic is one of the traditions at Prophetstown’s annual Fourth of July festivities, which concluded with live music and fireworks on Sunday night.

The Prophetstown Park District hosted a One Mile Fun Run, Run Around 5K, a 3 on 3 basketball tournament, and the annual Streetscape painting over the weekend.

“May the Fourth be with you” was one of the works of street art, with 120 separate squares creatively painted on West Riverside Drive.

WCHD is pleased it will be able to continue offering SHIELD IL Saliva COVID-19 tests to Whiteside and surrounding communities free of charge.

SHIELD IL tests are highly accurate PCR tests with results currently expected within 24 hours in patients’ online account. WCHD hopes continued easy access to testing will allow individuals to test as soon as symptoms develop and help decrease trans-

Save the date for Fulton’s National Night Out The Fulton Police Department and Fulton Kiwanis Club “Totally Tuesday” planners will be teaming up for this year’s National Night Out from 5 to 9 p.m. on Tuesday, Aug. 2, at Drives Park, 1300 Park Drive in Fulton.

Larry Wiersema, owner and operator of Wiersema Charter Service in Morrison, and employees were recipients of a plaque on Friday, July 1, thanking them for their many years of free service to Whiteside County veterans during Honor Flights dedicated to Whiteside County. The Whiteside County Honor Flight Committee, an affiliate of Honor Flight of the Quad Cities, was the donor of the plaque. Chairman Gary Farral made the presentation to Wiersema, with the aid of his wife Jan. Wiersema passed away on Friday, July 1, at MercyOne Medical Center in Clinton, Iowa. His funeral service will be at 10 a.m. on Friday, July 8, at Ebenezer Reformed Church. Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Thursday, July 7.

Born: January 6, 1929 in Rock Falls, IL Died: June 26, 2022 in Sterling, IL Donna M. Brooks, age 93, of Morrison, died Sunday, June 26, 2022 at Rock River Hospice and Home in Sterling.

Donna was born on January 6, 1929 in Rock Falls, the daughter of Ralph and Beulah (Higley) Barkdoll. She married Marshall Brooks on July 17, 1948 in Peoria. He preceded her in death on March 13, 2008. Donna was the manager of the Wheel Inn Ranch for six years retiring in 1991.

She is survived by her daughter, Marsha (Steve) Geerts of Morrison; two grandchildren; four great grandchildren; and two great great grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband; parents; one son, Duane Brooks; two sisters, Joyce Schrader and Janet Waters; and one brother, Keith Barkdoll.

A private graveside service will be held at a later date.

A memorial has been established to Rock River Hospice and Home in Sterling.

Art was united in marriage to his high school sweetheart, Donna Griffin on March 14, 1953, at Peace Lutheran Church in Port Byron. To this union, four wonderful children were born.

KIM M. SCHROTH, 63, of Morrison, IL, died Thursday, June 30, 2022, at her home.

Her funeral services will be held at 12:00 PM on Saturday, July 9, 2022 at the Morrison Chapel of the Bosma-Renkes Funeral Home with Rev. Luke Schouten, Pastor of Emmanuel Reformed Church officiating. A

mother in many Illinois communities and her grandparents, James Wesley and Mary (Lyons) Concidine in DeKalb, IL, and was a graduate of DeKalb High School. Alyce earned her teaching certificate from Northern Illinois State Teachers College. She was the first lay teacher at DeKalb St. Mary’s school in 195051, and taught the first kindergarten class in Earlville in 1951-52.

On May 31, 1952, she married Charles E. Cook of Somonauk in DeKalb, IL. Together they raised their family of nine children and farmed in DeKalb, Rock Falls, and Morrison, IL. In 1980, she returned to her career in early childhood education, earning her Associate’s Degree in 1987 from Sauk Valley Community College. She served as a nursery school and Head Start teacher in Morrison, Sterling, Rock Falls, and Lyndon, IL, from 1980 to 1993.

Alyce overcame many hardships in her childhood, which fueled her devotion to her 68 years of marriage with her beloved Charles, to raising her nine children, and to educating and caring for young children. Alyce was known by all as a model of compassion and faith. There was always room in her heart and at her table for one more person.

She cheered on her children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren at more ball games, concerts, recitals, 4-H shows, graduations, and other life events than could be counted.

Even at 92, she kept up with her family and friends on Facebook, sharing kindness, encouragement, and good humor. She had a gift for making people feel loved and cared for in small, everyday ways.

Survivors include nine children, David (Carol) Cook, Clifford Cook, Louise (Steve)

Poulter, John (Joyce) Cook, all of Morrison; Tom (Mary Pat) Cook of Fort Atkinson, WI, Kent (Clair) Cook of East Peoria, IL, Laura (Scott) Miller of Sterling, IL, Joel (Shawn) Cook of Como, IL, and Margaret (Mary Shelden) Cook of Lake in the Hills, IL; twenty-one grandchildren; 26 great grandchildren, and her half-sister Faith Cook of DeKalb, IL. She was preceded in death by her husband, her parents, and two brothers, James and Joe Ebbesen.

Art was preceded in death by his parents, James and Mabel, a daughter and son-inlaw, Pam (Brad) Smith, and siblings, Junior Goodwin, James (Barbara) Goodwin and Doris (Bill) West.

Art’s family request that visitors dress casual, and a luncheon will be held at Goodwin’s Pond following the burial.

Donna and family wish to thank the nurses and staff at Hospice of Dubuque and the Galena Stauss Senior Care Community, especially Kayla for the wonderful care provided to their husband and father.

MATT RUSSELL

Matt Stanley Russell, 58, of Erie, Illinois passed away unexpectedly on Saturday, June 25, 2022 at home. Visitation will be Thursday, June 30, 2022 from 3:00 to 7:00 PM at the Erie Christian Church, Erie, Illinois. Services will be Friday July 1, 2022 at 10 A.M. at the Church. Memorials may be made to Rock River Christian Camp, Polo, IL. Gibson- Bode Funeral Home, Erie, is helping with arrangements.

Matt was born August 6, 1963 in Morrison, IL, the son of David and Sylvia (Sanders) Russell. He graduated from Erie High School in 1981. He was a life member of the Erie Christian Church. He worked 19 years for Chuck’s Outboard Motors and Marine as a Marine Mechanic and 22 years for Vermeer Midwest as an Industrial Machine Mechanic.

Matt volunteered his time in many different ways but among his favorite was being an MC along his twin brother Marty for many

charity benefits and the Illinois Great River Tug. Matt spent much of his younger years on the Mississippi River boating and camping at Princeton Beach. He was an avid Chicago Bears and Chicago Cubs fan and could always be found on game day with his old school headset listening to the games so that he didn’t have to listen to Joe Buck on the TV. Matt was a “Parrothead” and loved attending Jimmy Buffett concerts with his friends and family. For several years Matt hosted a music festival in his pasture called Russellstock.

He will be remembered for his outgoing personality and loved to make people laugh.

Most importantly, Matt was a kind and caring family member and friend. You could always count on him to reach out in a time of need or just to tell you he loved you. In recent years, Matt found his way back to the Lord and we find peace knowing he is in the arms of Jesus.

She enjoyed sewing, quilting, and crafts. She also enjoyed baking and taught her daughters to bake so they could take over the baking duties. She always baked Christmas cookies to give to the mailman and anyone who came to visit. She loved to travel, especially to South Dakota, where she could sit and watch buffalo for hours. Above all, Kim enjoyed spending time with her family.

Survivors include her husband, Harold; three daughters, Michelle (Robert) Castaneda of

His funeral service will be held at 10:00 AM on Friday, July 8, 2022, at Ebenezer Reformed Church in Morrison with Ken Renkes officiating. A visitation will be held from 4:00 to 8:00 PM Thursday, July 7, 2022, at the Morrison Chapel of the Bosma-Renkes Funeral Home. Interment will be at Grove Hill Cemetery in Morrison. A memorial has been established to the American Cancer Society.

Larry was born August 6, 1950, in Morrison, IL, to Marvin and Florence (Boelkens) Wiersema. He was educated in the Nelson,

she married Arnold J. Damhoff in Fulton, IL. Following high school, Linda was first employed by Dr. Gronner’s Dentist office in Morrison. She then worked alongside her husband at A & D Electric, as a bookkeeper.

She had also worked as Northside Grade School as a lunchroom assistant. She was a previous member of Spring Valley Reformed Church in Fulton, and is a current member of Emmanuel Reformed Church, where she sang in the church choirs and was a member of Emmanuel’s Church Cantata. Linda enjoyed flower gardening, bird watching and furniture refinishing.

Survivors include her husband, Arnie; one son, Ryan (Theresa) Damhoff of Sycamore, IL; three sisters, Norma (Dean) Boehde of Clinton, IA, Debra (Larry) Tervelt of Loves Park, IL and Bonnie (John) Bauscher of Morrison, IL; three brothers, Ronald (Cheryl) Bielema of Canton, IL, Joe (Cindy) Bielema of Morrison, IL and John (Charlene) Bielema of Morrison, IL; one sister-in-law, Kathy Bielema of Fulton, IL. She was preceded in death by her parents and one brother, Terry Bielema.

IL grade schools and was a 1968 graduate of Rock Falls High School. Larry served in the United States Army during the Vietnam War. He married Janice Louise Forth on October 26, 1974, in Morrison. He drove a feed truck for Wayne Feeds in Rock Falls while in high school and worked at the L and M Service Station in Morrison. He then owned and operated Wiersema Charter Service in Morrison.

He was a member of Ebenezer Reformed Church in Morrison and the Morrison American Legion Post #328. Larry’s greatest joy in life was driving bus and spending time with his family, especially his grandchildren.

Survivors include his wife, Jan; two sons, Eric (Lisa) Wiersema of Morrison and Gregg (Jackie) Wiersema of Chadwick, IL; four grandchildren, Hailey and Matthew Wiersema, Alicen and Cooper Wiersema; three sisters.

He was preceded in death by his parents; one nephew, Nolan Richmond.

Esther Joy King handily wins GOP primary for 17th District, will face Democrat Eric Sorensen on Nov. 8

Republican Esther Joy King and Democrat Eric Sorensen will face off in November in what will be a closely watched race for Illinois’ 17th Congressional District.

In a statement released on Twitter, King, an East Moline attorney, thanked her supporters and called it “the honor of my lifetime to run to represent the people of this district.

“We have a major fight ahead of us – a fight to ensure that people can fill their gas tanks and grocery carts without dipping into their rent money or retirement savings,” she wrote.

King defeated fellow East Moline resident and insurance broker Charles Helmick Jr. Sorensen bested five other candidates to win the berth. He, too, thanked supporters.

“From the first day, this campaign has been built on three pillars: trust, science and communication,” he said on his Facebook page. “Talking with voters across the district, they agree, we need more science and less politics in their next representative.”

Should he win on Nov. 8, Sorensen, a longtime TV meteorologist before

retiring to run for this office, would be the state’s first openly gay Congressional member.

It will be one of the most hotly contested races nationwide as the GOP Esther Joy King pushes to regain a majority in the U.S. House.

The winner will take the seat of outgoing Democratic U.S. Rep. Cheri Bustos of East Moline, who announced in April 2021 that she would not seek reelection after her fifth term in office, prompting a small avalanche of nine hopefuls to step up. (One, Democrat Linda McNeely of Rockford, did not survive a challenge to the legitimacy of her petitions.)

Bustos issued this statement: “Congratulations to Eric Sorensen on his victory tonight. Illinoisans deserve a representative who will fight for working families, help build our local economy and continue to lift up Midwestern voices. Eric will do that.

“This November will be a historic election. Simply put, our freedoms and democracy are on the line. While we

were lucky to have a great crop of candidates vying for the Democratic nomination, now is the time to come together and work to help keep this seat blue in November.”

The GOP winner never appeared to

be in question.

King had roundly outpaced Helmick and by noon Wednesday, June 29, with 95% of the votes counted, the tally was 30,749 for King and 14,017 for Helmick, The Associated Press reported. That’s 68.7% to 31.3%.

This will be King’s second run for the Congressional seat. She was the Republican nominee in 2020, coming in a close second to Bustos with 48% to 52% of the vote. King announced her intention to run again only an hour after Bustos said she was bowing out.

Helmick also had been a primary candidate in 2020, but withdrew.

With 95% of the Democratic votes counted, Sorensen garnered 14,450 votes, or 37.9%.

Former state representative Letisa Wallace of Rockford had 8,889 votes, or

23.1%; Rockford Alderman Jonathan Logemann had 5,530, or 14.5%; Rock Island County board member Angie Normoyle had 4,724 votes, or 12.4%; community activist Marsha Williams of Channahon had 2,633, or 5.9%, and cannabis lobbyist Jacqueline McGowan of Palos Hills had 1,985 votes, or 5.2%, the AP reported.

In Whiteside County, where all 60 precincts were counted by 9:20 p.m.

Tuesday, the unofficial numbers were 3,031 for King and 1,001 for Helmick in the GOP race, or 75.2% to 24.8%.

They were 1,247, or 57% for Sorensen, a clear local favorite, 377 for Logemann, or 17.2%; 206 for Normoyle, or 9.4%; 154 for Wallace, or 7.3%, and 104 each, or 4.7%, for Williams and McGowan, the clerk reported.

The newly redrawn 17th District, with a population of more than 700,000, encompasses all or parts of Carroll, Whiteside, Winnebago, Stephenson, Rock Island, Knox, Mercer, Henry, Peoria, Fulton, Tazewell, McDonough and McNeal counties, running from Galena in the north to Astoria in the south.

It is heavily rural, encompassing around 10,000 family farms, but also includes the cities of Rockford, Peoria, Moline and Rock Island.

All 35 candidates advance to Nov. 8 Whiteside County Board race

MORRISON – As is required after every U.S. Census, all 27 Whiteside County Board seats – nine in each district – were up for election Tuesday, June 28.

In all, 24 incumbents faced off against 11 newcomers. Because neither the Democratic nor the Republican races had more than nine contestants each, all candidates advanced to the Nov. 8 general election, where only the top nine vote-getters in each district will be elected, regardless of party affiliation.

Democrat William McGinn, 84, of Sterling, did not file in District 1 after serving 40 years on the board.

In District 3, Republican Howard “Bud” Thompson, 92, of Prophetstown, did not seek reelection after 12 years, and Charles Brown Jr., 60, of Fenton, is not running after serving two years.

Former County Board member

Terry Woodard, who served three and a half years, from May 2005 through November 2008, and Douglas E. Crandall, who served a little less than five and a half years, from July 2015 through November 2020, are running in Districts 1 and 3, respectively.

With nine candidates total, the District 3 race is uncontested, so Crandall will be elected.

Both District 1 appointees also are seeking voter approval.

Republican Thomas Witmer was appointed in August to replace longtime member Ruth Stanley, who died June 15. Democrat Joan Padilla was appointed in February to replace Will Lee, who resigned from the board that month.

They are among nine Democrats and five Republicans seeking election in District 1; in District 2, those numbers are seven and five.

There will be no contested race in District 3 because only two Democrats and seven Republicans filed. Six of the seven are incumbents; the sev-

enth is Republican Brian Melton, Morrison’s chief of police.

For outstanding achievement in performing his managerial duties, Fritz Koenes, parts sales manager for Frank Baker Ford Sales in Fulton, has been presented the inaugural Golden Circle Award by the Ford Division of Ford Motor Co. The award is based on outstanding accomplishments in carrying out managerial responsibilities such as parts sales, parts purchase control, sales promotion and advertising and customer satisfaction.

The Fulton Community Christian School Board announced that Weldon Luckey of Hull, Iowa, is the new principal and teacher of the seventh and eighth grades.

50 Years

July 5, 1972

Miss Sandra Wiersema was crowned Miss Flame of 1972 at the finale of the Miss Flame Festival. Miss Barbara Vruno was named runner-up.

An era in the history of Fulton High School came to a close when the school bus operated by Mike Schipper made its final run. Schipper began driving

the bus in 1946 and during the past 26 years has covered every route in the River Bend District.

While many companies suffer from today’s economic conditions, AgriKing’s 14-year record of growth continues. During May, sales volume went over $900,000, the highest for a single month. The growth they are seeing is a reflection of customer confidence in the unique approach to working with livestock producers.

The city of Fulton faces the requirement of buying the permanent equipment of the Fulton Marina at an undetermined price. There also is no definite plan as yet for providing funds needed for payment. This new problem for city officials resulted from formal notice by Elmer Engelhorn that he is terminating his lease on the marina property which is owned by the city.

renamed Dutch Oven Family Restaurant. Paula Haight and Shefki Mehedi, the new owners, have spent a considerable amount of time remodeling the interior. They are offering a complete menu with hours from 6 a.m. to 10 p.m.

Eric Den Besten, formerly of Fulton, was part of the gold medal winning junior men’s quad team at the U.S. Rowing National Championships in Indianapolis. Den Besten and his team earned the win in 6 minutes, 20.5 seconds. The team will travel to New Jersey to compete in qualifying for the World Champions. The World Championship will be in Montreal in August.

July 3, 2002

A fire at the Jim Chamberlain farm that could be seen for miles around demolished the farmer’s machine shed and workshop. Departments from Cordova, Hillsdale, Erie, Fulton and Albany prevented the fire from spreading to the house and another machine shed. The cause was electrical. A corn/ bean planter, a forklift, a new Grasshopper mower, hand tools, work-

benches and many machinery parts were lost.

The paperwork is done and now the fun of building Drives Park can begin.

The hope is to have the roadwork cut in and rocked in July and then let it settle over the winter and overlay it in the spring or early summer. When this is completed, bids will go out for fencing, lighting, the concession stand and playground equipment. City crews will do the infrastructure work.

Signs and risk factors of a tubal pregnancy are discussed

By STEPHEN D. HARRISON, M.D. A tubal pregnancy refers to a fertilized egg that has not attached to the lining of the uterus but is planted in the fallopian tube. A related term is ectopic pregnancy, which includes the tubal pregnancy and other areas where the fertilized egg is not in the proper place or uterine cavity. These types of pregnancies are not viable

and may lead to substantial problems. Early on, women may have the usual symptoms of pregnancy – having missed a period, breast tenderness or nausea.

Abnormal bleeding may be an early sign of tubal pregnancy although most abnormal bleeding or mild bleeding is not a sign. Because of nerve involvement, leakage from a tubal pregnancy may lead to shoul-

der pain. Heavy bleeding inside the abdomen may happen as well over time. This may lead to life-threatening shock from low blood pressure and blood volume loss.

Risk fac tors for the condi tion include prior infections, previous tubal pregnancy, prior tubal surgery and even fertility treatments. While any pregnancy is uncommon with an intrauterine device (IUD), if a person

does get pregnant with the device in place it is a little more likely to be a tubal pregnancy. Smoking also increases the risk.

A pregnancy test and other blood tests may help with the diagnosis along with an ultrasound. A medicine call Methotrexate stops cell growth and helps to dissolve existing cells.

Sometimes surgery is required, including emergency surgery.

ERIE MIDDLE SCHOOL

The Ancestor Project As one of the final projects of the year, seventh graders at Erie Middle School were challenged to pick an ancestor or someone else that they could research and learn more about in order to write a story telling about their life. Students conducted interviews with family members and some were able to gather additional resources and pictures to help tell their story. While there were many great stories written, not all will be published.

This project was a collaborative effort between students’ history classes with Mrs. Kruthoff and Mr. Armstrong, English class with Mrs. Wolf, and the students’ families.

Students enjoyed getting to know more about their families, and many were surprised to learn how interesting their families were. We hope you will enjoy their stories, too!

My grandpa is a jeweler by day and grandpa for life. My grandpa is a great example setter for my cousins and me.

Someone always calls me the watch lady due to my grandpa being a jeweler and that makes me feel close to my grandpa because I know who they are talking about when they say that. Dave is a wonderful grandpa and a remarkable person because of how his childhood shaped him, how his adulthood influenced him and the things he still does today.

My Grandpa Dave is a wonderful man, partly due to how his childhood shaped him. My grandpa’s name is David Lee Habben. He was born on Sept.

7, 1943, in Rapid City, South Dakota. His

biological father was not known, but the dad who raised him is Henry Habben and his mom’s name is Ione Shannon Habben. He has one sister named Deanna, two brothers, one named Paul – he served in the military – and his other brother is sadly not with us today.

His name was Donald. Donald died when he was 40.

My grandpa grew up in Newcastle, Wyoming. It is about 13 hours away from Erie. He also went to school in Newcastle, Wyoming. In middle school, he did track and in high school, he wrestled. A unique and scary fact about my grandpa is that he missed the first four days of high school because he was in a coma because of an injury he suffered in a county fair rodeo. He graduated in 1962 at the age of 18. He then went to college at Gem City in Quincy. He didn’t have many hobbies, but he golfed, did stuff for 4-H, woodworked and did farm work. He was quite talented as a woodworker and there are some things he made that they still have in their home today. I learned that my grandpa Dave’s childhood shaped him into the adult he is today.

My grandpa’s adulthood influenced him to be the great man he is today. My grandpa married my grandma, Betty Habben. Her maiden name was Betty Munster. He married her at age 24. They met working at Eaton’s Jewelry in Normal. They had three kids, two girls – Danae Habben (my mom), who married Jeff Wunderlich (my dad), Danelle Habben (my aunt), who married Gary Nall (my uncle) – and one boy, Darren Habben (also my uncle), who married Katie Mates (also my aunt), and they all have at least two kids.

My grandpa held many jobs over the

years, doing farm work, working at a grocery store, a drugstore and a movie theater. He also was a house parent at Illini Children’s Home in Erie, as well as working at multiple jewelry stores: Eaton’s Jewelry, Chadband’s in Bloomington, part owner at Klingler’s Jewelry and now at Dave’s Goldsmith Shop out of his house. Plus, he does work for Don’s Jewelry in Clinton, Iowa, and Expressions in Davenport, Iowa. Work has not consumed his life, though. He has made sure to take time to relax and be with his family. He has been on a handful of vacations with his family. My Grandpa Dave has been to Yellowstone, the Black Hills, North Carolina, Germany, England and Colorado. While enjoying life, he also enjoys some of his favorite foods. He loves pancakes and ice cream. His favorite kind of ice cream is strawberry with chocolate sauce on top, but really he doesn’t discriminate against ice cream – basically any kind will do – and he loves thrive bread.

Thrive bread is bread that Native Americans make.

In addition to his career and his favorites, my grandpa is a very giving man. He was in the National Guard for six years. He gave time to his country and he volunteers for community events and at his church. Additionally, my grandpa has had some struggles in his life. He had colon cancer. They took eight inches out of his large intestine. He had colon cancer in 2012, when he was 69. I learned how my grandpa’s adulthood influenced him to be the respectful man he is today.

My grandpa’s life continues to be an inspiring and great one. My grandpa lives in Erie now. My grandpa runs his own jewelry shop at his house. He is 78

years old with seven grandchildren. As he has gotten older, he has found new hobbies he enjoys. He started running when he was 63 and still runs the Bix to this day. Overall, he has lived a very full life but it is not nearly the end. He is an active man who is always running around helping others, donating his time and talents and making sure his family has everything they need. Despite the fact that he is “retired,” he is just as busy as he has ever been. I learned that my grandpa’s life is really good and he is very busy helping and visiting with many people.

I learned so many things about my grandpa that I did not know before. I see my grandpa as a person who is hardworking and a responsible adult that I can look up to. I feel closer to him knowing how his life was and what he went through when he was younger. One lesson I learned from him was to take care of people, no matter what your situation is. Another lesson I learned from him was even if you are full from a meal there is always room for ice cream. I feel that the project made me know more about my grandpa than I ever thought I ever could. The project also made me realize that I can always learn more about people. My grandpa is a great man and an even better grandpa.

My grandpa is a wonderful grandpa and a remarkable person. His childhood helped shape the man he is today. Additionally, his adult life significantly influenced the man he is. And, even in retirement, he is not really retired, but living a full and rewarding life. My Grandpa Habben is a remarkable man and grandpa. I love him so much; he is the foundation of our family and the glue that holds us all together.

MOUNT CARROLL – “Annie,” a Broadway musical based on the popular Harold Gray comic strip Little Orphan Annie and loosely based on the 1885 poem “Little Orphant Annie” written by James Whitcomb Riley, has arrived at the Timber Lake Playhouse.

The show continues through July 10.

The musical includes music

by Charles Strouse, lyrics by Martin Charnin and a book by Thomas Meehan.

The original Broadway production opened in 1977 and ran for nearly six years, setting a record for the Alvin Theatre. The musical’s songs “Tomorrow” and “It’s the Hard Knock Life” are among its most popular musical numbers.

With equal measures of pluck and positivity, little orphan Annie charms everyone’s hearts despite a next-tonothing start in 1930s New York City.

She is determined to find the parents who abandoned her years ago on the doorstep of a New York City orphanage that is run by the cruel, embittered Miss Hannigan. Annie’s dog, Sandy, will be portrayed by a golden-doodle named Copper. Copper is a community comfort/ therapy dog for the Whiteside County Sheriff’s Department.

Copper auditioned for the role and bested seven other dogs for the part.

On Friday, July 8, audience members can stick around after the show for the Page to Stage talk back series.

“You can meet the cast of ‘Annie’ and ask questions about the show and get a glimpse of behind the scenes,” TLP Executive Director Dan Danielowski said. “On the weekends before each show, The Deck Bar opens two hours before curtain with a variety of food options and beer and wine for purchase. One hour before showtime, members of the Resident Company come down to The Lake Stage to entertain as you enjoy food and a drink before the show. No reservations are necessary for this free show.”

Dykstra is studying aviation administration in the College of Aviation Science Technology at Lewis University.

To be eligible for this honor, students must have completed a minimum of 12 credit hours during the semester with a grade-point average of at least 3.5.
