HONORING VETERANS Sarah Ford for Shaw Media

U.S. Navy veteran Lou Hummel of Prophetstown American Legion Post 522 places flags on the graves of veterans at Lyndon Township Cemetery on Friday, May 20, in preparation for Memorial Day ceremonies. Hummel and other Legion members placed 347 flags at the Lyndon Cemetery and over 700 flags for veterans of all wars at Riverside, Leon, and Washington Road cemeteries in Prophetstown. The Legion will conduct ceremonies at 9 a.m. at the Lyndon Township Cemetery and 10 a.m. at Eclipse Square Park on Monday, May 30. Area Memorial Day events listed on page 4.

Cows Coffee of Wyanet was set up at Prophetstown Elementary School on Friday, May 20, which was also Ag Day at the school. PES students learned about taking care of farm animals, how corn grows, types of seeds used in farming, soil types, melon planting and even making ice cream, with many teachers and community volunteers helping with the activities.

PES Parents for Students also gifted teachers and staff some cookies and a coupon for a free drink from the “coffee on wheels” trailer, which was parked by the school all morning. Prophetstown library announces spring events The Henry C. Adams Memorial Library in Prophetstown will hold a Craft and Story Hour ever second Saturday of each month from 10 to 11 a.m. in the library basement. The June 11 event will be about NASA and astronauts and is open to all kids in pre-K through age 10.

The Summer Reading Program for kids in pre-K through fifth grade will be held every Tuesday in June. Stop by the library or Shaw’s MarketPlace

The library is also holding a monthly Book Club, with “The Lincoln Highway” by Amor Towles as the June book. Lyndon is offering community garden plots The village of Lyndon is offering four 12-foot-by-20-foot community garden plots to any Lyndon resident wishing to grow their own food. The plots are located on village-owned property behind the Village Hall and just a short walk from the parking lot.

The cost per plot is $25, and they’ve already been prepared and are ready to be planted.

Police Chief Mike Fisk said this is the first year for the project and village staff are working to supply a reli-

Morrison Music Theater Association to perform ‘Steel Magnolias’ on June 3-5 Morrison Music Theater Association will present “Steel Magnolias” the weekend of June 3-5 at the Morrison Institute of Technology, 701 Portland Ave. Performances are set for 7 p.m. Friday, June 3, and Saturday, June 4, and 2 p.m. Sunday, June 5.

“Steel Magnolias” began as a successful off-Broadway play, which was then adapted into a blockbuster

motion picture starring Dolly Parton, Sally Field, Shirley McClain, Julia Roberts, Daryl Hannah and Olympia Dukakis. It takes place at a beauty parlor in a small Louisiana town where these ladies share the town news and their joys and sorrows.

Cast members include MMTA veterans Angie Lobdell as M’Lynne Eatenton, Nicole Pfieffer-Oberg as Truvy

Jones, Bonnie Phend as Clariee Belcher and Sunny Porter as Ouiser Boudreaux.

Joining them are two women making their MMTA debuts, Eliot Lobdell as Shelby and Emma Watts as AnnelleDupuy-DeSoto. Lobdell attends Morehead State University in Kentucky and Watts is a student at Augustana College in Rock Island, both majoring

in theater performance.

The production is under the direction of Joplin James Sell.

River Valley District Library, Cordova District Library, River Cities Rotary and Riverdale Interact partnered to bring Tales on the Trail to Dorrance Park in Port Byron on Sunday, May 22.

The event featured three stories along three trails, plus seed planting, collaborative painting, a flower bookmark project, snacks, drinks and time outdoors on a beautiful day.

Area towns announce Memorial Day activities

Albany – A Memorial Day ceremony will be at 11 a.m. at Lusk Cemetery on Monday, May 30. The public is invited to attend.

Cordova – C o r d o v a A m e r i c a n Legion Post 1033 members will be placing flags at veterans’ gravesites at the Cordova Cemetery on Saturday, May 28, at 9 a.m. A Memorial Day service will be held at the town bridge/ Legion Landing at 12:30 p.m. Monday, May 30, to honor sailors lost at sea.

Another ceremony will be at 1 p.m. at the Cordova Cemetery on 157th Avenue N., with Rev. Stacie Fidlar of St. John’s Lutheran Church, Rock Island as the keynote speaker.

Erie – Erie will be celebrating Memorial Day on Monday, May 30, starting with the American Legion Post 582 annual Memorial Day Parade at 10 a.m. The parade route will go

from Eighth Avenue to Albany Road and end at the Erie Cemetery, where a Memorial Day service will be held at 11 a.m. Revitalize Erie will then host a community Memorial Day Picnic from noon to 2 p.m. at Heritage Park, 421 Highland Ave. Fenton – Fenton United Methodist Church will hold a Community Church and Memorial Day service on Sunday, May 29, at 10 a.m. at the Fenton Cemetery. Pastor Kicheon Peter Ahn will lead the memorial service honoring all veterans interned at Fenton. The church invites all family and friends of those who are buried there, as well as all community members and past and present military personnel, to come and join in their tribute, followed by coffee and refreshments at the church.

The cemetery is located at the corner of Wilmot and Black roads.

Fulton – Fulton American Legion Post 402 will be posting flags on gravesites on Wednesday, May 25 starting at 1 p.m. at the South Cemetery circle. A Memorial Day ceremony will begin on Monday, May 30, at noon at the Veterans Memorial Park, located next to Fulton Dental.

Lyndon/Prophetstown – Prophetstown American Legion Post 522 will conduct Memorial Day ceremonies on Monday, May 30, at 9 a.m. at the Lyndon Township Cemetery and 10 a.m. at Eclipse Square Memorial Park on Washington St. in Prophetstown.

Morrison – American Legion Post 328 in Morrison invites the public to remember and honor veterans of the country during their annual Memorial Day commemorations on Monday, May 30. Events will kick off at 10:30 a.m. with the Memorial Day

parade heading west on Main Street and north on Genesee Street to Grove Hill Cemetery. Ceremonies at the Legion/VFW Pavilion at the cemetery include a keynote speaker, military music, placing of the wreath, three volleys and playing of taps.

After the ceremony, the public is invited to Morrison American Legion’s Open House at noon, with a Chamber of Commerce ribbon-cutting, military display table, Lions Club table and pork chop sandwiches, sides, beverages and dessert. The open house will celebrate the completed renovations at the Post, 306 Main St. Port Byron – American Legion 421 Coe-Lamb Post and first responders will hold a Memorial Day ceremony on Monday, May 30, at 10 a.m. at the War Memorial on North Main and Oak streets.

Registration open for Prophetstown Firecracker Classic Registration is open for the 3 on 3 basketball holiday tournament at Prophetstown High School on Sunday, July 3, sponsored by the PHS Class of 2025.

The registration deadline is Monday, June 20, by 5 p.m. The entry fee is $100 on or before June 20, and $140 if registering June 21-28.

The registration fee includes three guaranteed games, trophies for first, second and third place, medals for toilet bowl winners and a T-shirt (note: late entries are not guaranteed a

T-shirt).

Proposed brackets are girls and boys grades 3-4, 5-6, 7-8, 9-10, 11-12, women’s, men’s and open men’s.

Brackets will be dependent upon the number of teams entered and will be adjusted or combined according to the number of teams entered, with a 100 team cap. Teams will be assigned to a bracket according to the grade entering or the oldest player on the roster. Once registration is submitted, no substitutions or changes to the roster will be allowed.

Registration begins on tournament day at 7:15 a.m. and games start promptly at 8 a.m. Players must register before their first game. All games will be played in the parking lot at Prophetstown High School. Every effort will be made to play the games but in the event of inclement weather, organizers reserve the right to shorten, cancel or change the format of the tournament. No rain dates or refunds are planned.

Erie student Paige Dykstra earns Impact Award

Paige Dykstra, a student at Erie High School, will receive the ImpactLife Student Impact Award, given annually to students who have shown exemplary support of the region’s blood supply.

The Student Impact Award program recognizes the ways students can support the blood supply: as donors, advocates, volunteers and blood drive coordinators.

CAROLYN VANDERMYDE, 78, of Morrison, IL, died on May 15, 2022 at her home.

Cremation rites have been accorded. A memorial service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Friday May 20, 2022 at the Morrison Chapel of the Bosma-Renkes Funeral Home with Mr. Ken Renkes officiating. There will be no visitation. A memorial to MercyOne Hospice has been established.

Carolyn was born January 17, 1944 in Erie, IL, to Donald and Clara (Medema) Hamstra. She was a 1962 graduate of Erie High School and then earned a nursing degree from Moline Lutheran School of Nursing in Moline, IL. She married Robert Vandermyde on December 10, 1965 in Morrison. Carolyn was a nurse for

40 years, beginning her career at Jane Lamb Hospital in Clinton, IA, and eventually moving over to Morrison Community Hospital, where she retired. She was a member of Ebenezer Reformed Church in Morrison all of her life and was on the Philathea and Ladies Aid committees. Carolyn enjoyed NASCAR, the Chicago Cubs, reading, puzzles and taking care of people- from family members to friends. She was a devout Christian and her love for Jesus Christ drove her to volunteer and help others whenever she could.

Survivors include her husband, Robert; two daughters, Kimberly (Brent) Nistler of Wauwatosa, WI and Kelly (Doug) Kuehl of Morrison; one son, Lain Vandermyde of Morrison; one granddaughter, Claire Nistler of Wauwatosa, WI; two sisters, Donna Thompson-Borchardt of Leesburg, FL and Beth (Louis) Zavala of South Elgin, IL. She was preceded in death by her parents and a brother-in-law, Robert Borchardt.

Interment will be at Oak Knoll Memorial Park Cemetery in Sterling, IL. A memorial has been established.

Bob was born July 11, 1971 in Clinton, IA to Robert and Joan (Fredricks) Renner Sr. He

was educated in the Morrison grade schools and was a 1989 graduate of Morrison High School. Bob worked hard all of his life. He enjoyed making his house a home, cooking new recipes and spending time with his buddy, Jaxson.

Survivors include two sisters, Carman (Jim) Funderburgh of Thomson, IL and Cindy (Steve) Whiting of Thomson, IL; two nieces, Brandy (Chad) Stephenson and Stacey (Joe) Stephenson; two nephews, Steve (Samantha) Whiting Jr. and Brian (Victoria) Whiting; god-daughters, Jenna and Marissa Tichler of Morrison; many aunts and uncles, and many special friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his maternal and paternal grandparents; one sister, Joy Fredricks; an uncle, Gerald Fredricks; one niece, Angela McGinty.

Norma was born November 1, 1957 to Richard and Rosa V. Ruiz. She was educated in Albany Grade School and graduated from Fulton High School. She married Jeff Brimley on May 16, 1987 at the Little Brown Church in Nashua, IA. Norma worked as an insurance adjustor for several insurance companies. One of her hobbies was floral design, which she studied and taught at Blackhawk College.

She worked at several flower shops. She and her husband owned and operated “Scoops”, a homemade ice cream truck.

Her last big accomplishment that she was very proud of was getting a college degree

Louis was born December 11, 1937 in Morrison, IL, to Louis Sr. and Inez (Lyon) Betts.

He went to Independence Country School for two years before moving to Morrison to attend high school. He was first married to Shirley Jean Zuidema. Then on August 24, 1974 he married Beverly Irene Morehead in Clinton, IA. Louis worked for Shirley’s father at Morrison Auto Body Shop for two years, and then worked in the body shop at Eddie Schuler Motors for four years. After that he became a self-employed trucker. Louis was an accomplished bowler, starting in 1954 and retiring in 1999. He participated in Morrison’s Monday and Friday night bowling

leagues at the Hilltop Lanes and served as the league’s secretary. He was in the 700 club, Travel League and was also inducted into the Mississippi Rock River Bowling Association Hall of Fame in 1994. He had served as Past President and Director of the Association. Louis also enjoyed woodworking and completed the projects for his wife’s craft fairs. He umpired little league for many years – even enjoyed calling his own son “out!”. He was a whiz with crossword puzzles, enjoyed watching westerns, old TV shows, and when time allowed, he like to fish and hunt.

Survivors include his wife, Bev; one daughter, Dawn (Tom) Beswick of Morrison, IL; two sons, Randy (Sue Boelkins) Betts of Sterling, IL and Scott (Stacey) Betts of Liberty Township, OH; a step daughter, Doreen Manning of Galax, VA; one step son, Arthur Morehead

She was a homemaker, mom, grandma and great grandma. Judy was

to support his family which was a God send at the time, as even a book of matches was unaffordable. Kenny and his good friend Warren (Lank) Murphy joined the Army immediately after the attack on Pearl Harbor in 1941.

Kenny was most proud of his union involvement, being Vice President of the FEUE at International Harvester Co. in East Moline, IL. The Union battled to secure the benefits that are enjoyed by retirees today.

Kenny moved to St. Louis, MO and became the number one medium duty truck salesman for Chevrolet. He sold trucks to most of America’s railroads. After retiring in St. Louis, Kenny opened Portland Truck Sales in rural Prophetstown. He sold hundreds of used railroad vehicles every year.

Kenny loved to gamble on anything, drink and fish. He treated his friends and relatives

to trips that most could only dream of. He loved to see people have fun.

Kenny is survived by his son, Kent (Diana) Verkruysse of Prophetstown, IL; daughters, Yvonne Mayer, Tulsa, OK, Kathy (Ken) Bott, Clinton, IA, Michelle (Len) Watkins, Iowa City, IA, along with many grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and one great-great grandchild. Thursday, May 19, 2022 saw the passing of a true Son of Fulton when Warren Wiersema, 95, passed away. Born 2/1/1927 to Burnie and Jeanette Wiersema, Warren was the oldest of three siblings, sister Gloria and brother Bruce, both of whom preceded him in death.

Warren grew up on 15th Avenue, then part of the old Lincoln Highway, where he sat curbside admiring the trucks rolling by. Some of his childhood sketches foretold his lifelong passion for “big rigs,” as well as his artistic ability. As he grew, he would work for free all day just to receive a ride in one.

Mr. Wiersema lettered his first truck when he was 12. He said the work was fine, but he misspelled the owner’s name. That began a career that put food on the table for a family of five who worshipped him.

After graduating from Fulton High School in 1945, Warren joined the Army, where he played baritone in a regimental band. Fortu-

nately, the war ended before he had to trade his horn for a rifle, and he returned to Fulton to marry his high school sweetheart, Pauline Dornbush. They built a house on 9th Avenue where they raised their 3 children, Doug, Laurel and Karen.

Along with operating a successful sign business, Warren had time to indulge his love for music through participation with the Clinton Area Band and Clinton Symphony. As for serving his home town, he served first as an alderman, then as mayor of Fulton for 20 years. He also represented Fulton in their Flood District after guiding the city through the flood of ‘65.

His later years were occupied by work, his dear friend Betty Voss, and his grandchildren, Christopher, Kevin, Shana, Brian and Andrew. He loved to reminisce over a good cigar, and will be fondly remembered by his family and friends.

Warren was preceded in death by his loving wife, Pauline, and a grandson, Brian Barry.

Visitation was held on Sunday, May 22, 2022, from 3 to 7 PM at McDonald Funeral Home in Fulton. The funeral followed on Monday at 10:00 AM at Fulton Presbyterian Church, with Pastor Catherine Martin officiating. Burial with military honors concluded at Fulton Township Cemetery.

BRIAN G. HOUZENGA, 48, of Morrison, IL, died Friday, May 13, 2022 at his home of an apparent heart attack.

Funeral services will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Friday, May 20, 2022 at the Fulton Chapel of the Bosma-Renkes Funeral Home, with Rev. Joseph Crum of Spring Valley Reformed Church officiating. A visitation will be held from 4:00 to 7:00 p.m.

The Riverdale Middle School track and field teams have had a successful season, with many team members advancing to the state meet in East Peoria.

The last two weeks of the Riverdale Middle School track season have been filled with excitement.

The teams traveled to Erie on May 2 to compete in the conference meet.

They came away with multiple champions.

For the eighth grade girls, Kenadie Willemkins took first in both the 100 and 200 meters.

For the eighth grade boys, Braeden Bode took the top spot in the 1,600 meters.

The seventh grade girls had multiple

champions. Preslie Willemkens won the 100 and 200, Ava Gaulrapp won the 400, Jillian Murray won the 1,600 and Amarah Coleman was first in the discus. The 4x200 relay of Cayleigh Hungate, Isla Baldwin, Channing DeLaRosa and Willemkens and the 4x400 of Hungate, Emme DeBlaey, Gualrapp and Jillian Murray also celebrated victories.

The seventh grade girls team won the conference meet, with the next closest team finishing 40 points behind.

The seventh grade boys team also won numerous titles and came away with the conference crown.

BHC scholarship application deadline extended to May 30

The Black Hawk College Foundation Scholarship Application deadline has been extended to Monday, May 30.

2002: Heritage Canyon founders offer complex to Fulton as gift 60 Years

May 23, 1962

The second phase of plans for a new bridge between Fulton and Clinton are completed and the Clinton Bridge Commission has filed a request for a permit to build the bridge with the U.S. Engineers at Rock Island. Construction is still more than two years away, with bridge officials hoping that construction will be started around July 1, 1964.

Cost of the new bridge is expected to be about $5.8 million.

A grand opening event for Wayne’s Mileage Mart, located just east of the Fulton-Lyons bridge, was announced.

The station, which handles Deep Rock gasoline and gives S&H Green Stamps, has been completely redecorated and is now operating under the ownership of Wayne Lancaster.

50 Years

May 24, 1972

The final formality in moving the principal office of Fidelity Life Association from Fulton to Long Grove was effected at the annual meeting of F.L.A. policyholders. The vote for moving was about 18,000 for the move and 2,000 against it.

40 Years

May 26, 1982

Damage caused by a fire at the Garden Plain Feed Service may cost as much as $3 million, according to owner Howard VanZuiden. He will continue to do business as usual using facilities in Fulton. The fire destroyed most of the facilities. Firemen found the main portion of the mill was engulfed in flames when they arrived. The main portion of the mill and office were destroyed.

Dennis Boeck of Fulton was voted Outstanding Ag Teacher of the Year at the FFA banquet in Pearl City. Boeck teaches vocational agriculture at the school in Pearl City. He previously taught in the River Bend school system.

30 Years

May 20, 1992

Wayne Huizenga, of Huizenga-Wierenga Insurance Agency, presented scholarship checks to two Fulton students. Jason Smith, a senior at Fulton

High School, and Korene Morris, a senior at Unity Christian High School, each received a check in the amount of $250 from Mt. Pleasant Mutual Insurance Company of Morrison.

Jane Orman, president of the River Bend Board of Education, presented two Golden Eagle awards to Dale and Lorna Thayer and Marva Hinds. The Thayers received an award that states, “Being staunch supporters of the district music program, volunteering their time and materials consistently.”

Lorna Thayer is a teacher at the high school. Hinds’ award states, “Always going above and beyond the required elements of any job, program or project.” Hinds was a teacher’s aide at Albany and was employed at the Sinnissippi Mental Health Center.

20 Years

May 22, 2002

At the Fulton City Council meeting, the public learned the founders of Heritage Canyon and members of the Harold and Thelma Wierenga family have offered the Heritage Canyon complex to the city of Fulton as a gift. It is the entire complex, including a large parking lot but excluding the homesite. The council studied the proposal and accepted the

recommendation of administrator Randy Balk to work with Heather Bennett to present a recommendation to the council at the June meeting.

Bob Black was honored at the 26th annual Fulton High School Lady Steamer Invitational track meet. Black was the first girls track coach at FHS beginning in 1976 when girls track and field was first recognized by the IHSA. Black established the Lady Steamer Invitational track meet in 1977.

The Fulton Fire and Ambulance Department received a donation of $1,000 from the Illowa Thrift Store. The money will go toward the ongoing gear locker project that members took on last fall. Marge Bielema presented the check to Fire Chief Boyd Van Dellen.

Work on restoring monuments in Fulton Township Cemetery was completed. The work was funded by a grant from the D.S. Flikkema Foundation and a donation from the American Legion for veteran stone restoration.

Eighteen monuments were leveled and repaired. Three of the stones in the southern cemetery were monuments of Civil War veterans.

Working to remedy the opioid crisis is discussed

By STEPHEN D. HARRISON, M.D. The opioid crisis is producing more than 70,000 deaths a year and rising.

The reasons are many, but the most obvious answer is people have pain and desire to have relief from that pain.

The problem accelerated when the pharmaceutical or drug companies convinced the government to have a pain scale that would address this need. By calling pain a vital sign, they are attempting to reduce this artificial number through pain medicine.

There was no shortage of medicine from the pharmaceutical industry to solve the so-called pain problem. In fact, doctors were penalized for not addressing pain thoroughly. This has been compounded by patient satisfaction scores in which people can rate their doctor with a lower number if they do not receive the desired response for pain. Then to place the doctor in a

further bind, the government decided to assign penalties to doctors who were prescribing too much pain medicine.

Now that we have addressed some of the history behind the problem, let’s take a look at the situation from a perspective that does not involve blame or stigma to any one party. Indeed, the opioid crisis impacts people from all walks of life and economic divisions.

There are very few families that have not been affected by a problem from opioids. When we remove the stereotype of a junkie who is unemployed as the typical opioid dependent person and recognize it is often respectable people from all backgrounds, we can then work toward meaningful solutions.

The opioid crisis absolutely affects every community in the country regardless of the impact to a family.

Therefore, the solution begins with awareness in the community. When we

educate ourselves and remove the judgment and stigma, we recognize that it is individuals who are suffering and also their families and, of course, the community. Communities taking positive steps include churches of all faiths coming together to address this crisis along with other volunteer community organizations.

We must keep in mind that most opioid overdose is not intentional, but that death may be around the corner for many people unaware of the problem.

Government sources are advocating that people who are around or consuming opioid narcotics would do well to have the prescription naloxone, known as Narcan, available for the unintentional overdoses. This medicine is available by IV and nasal spray, but also may be carried easily without undue attention in the oral form by anyone.

As parents, we naturally ask our

teens if there will be alcohol at the parties they attend. Unfortunately, this question does not solve the real problems. A realistic question to ask your teenager is will there be Narcan or naloxone available at the party for anyone with an unintentional overdose. Keep in mind that the opioid problem may be enhanced by sleeping pills, alcohol and some medicines used for anxiety such as Ativan, Xanax and others.

Side effects to giving Narcan or naloxone to someone who had no opioid on board are minimal. Those with any such substance may experience withdrawal, sweating, nausea, restlessness and headache. Rare side effects include heart rhythm disturbances, seizures and fluid overload. All of these are collectively pale alongside real opioid deaths. Many advocate naloxone or Narcan be widespread and available for individuals, bars and other community gatherings.

Local teams send qualifiers to state from 1A Erie Sectional

ERIE – Out of the eight Sauk Valley-area boys track and field teams that competed at the Class 1A Erie Sectional at Wayne Hein Field on May 19, seven will have a representative at the IHSA Boys State Track and Field championships in Charleston this week.

Fulton will send two qualifiers to Charleston after a pair of personal records at sectionals.

Braiden Damhoff took second in the shot put to secure his spot at state, recording a throw of 13.35 meters.

“I felt really great today about my

performance in the shot put,” Damhoff said. “It feels awesome to qualify for state. I have not been to state before.

This is my first year actually doing shot put.”

Daken Pessman was the other state qualifier for the Steamers, posting a sectional title winning triple jump of 12.55 meters.

Erie-Prophetstown, the second-place finisher as a team, qualified for state in six events and secured four individual sectional titles.

Braxton Froeliger was a triple qualifier for the Panthers, picking up a sectional title individually in the long jump with a leap of 6.68 meters. He also

garnered a runner-up finish in the 4x100 relay, logging a time of 44.23 with teammates Michael Carlson, Trevor Cobo and Ben Lantz.

The same relay team went on to win a sectional title in the 4x200 later in the evening, recording a time of 1:33.72.

Lantz also was a triple qualifier for E-P, winning a sectional title individually in the 300-meter hurdles with a time of 43.65 seconds and qualifying in the two aforementioned relays.

Cobo qualified individually as well with a runner-up high jump finish of 1.85 meters.

Parker Holdorf was a sectional champion and state qualifier for the

Panthers in the pole vault, clearing the bar at 3.70 meters.

Brady Wolf, Justice Brainerd, Thomas Dauphin and Alex Anderson won sectional titles for Morrison in the 4x100 and 4x400 relays, blazing to times of 44.11 seconds and 3:33.82, respectively.

Riverdale placed first as a team with 97 points.

E-P was the runner-up with 81. Newman took sixth (43 points) in the 16-team meet, Morrison was seventh (32) and Fulton and Milledgeville-Eastland tied for eighth (31). The Amboy co-op was 10th (27). Bureau Valley was 13th (11).

EARLY VOTING SCHEDULE Early Voting for the June 28, 2022 General Primary Election for all Whiteside County Precincts will be conducted at the Office of the Whiteside County Clerk at the Courthouse at 200 E. Knox Street in Morrison, beginning Thursday, May 19th through Monday, June 27th from 8:30 am to 4:30 pm, Monday through Friday and Saturday June 25th from 9 am until noon.

There will also be early voting on a limited basis available in Sterling for all Whiteside County Precincts at the Eastern Branch Court Facility at 101 E. Third Street in Sterling. The dates and times for voting in Sterling are: Wednesday, June 15, Thursday, June 16 and Friday, June 17 from 9:00 am to 4:00 pm.

Any valid registered voter in Whiteside County may vote during the early voting period, however, any vote cast is final, and may not be revoked, and the voter is not eligible to cast a vote on election day.

VILLAGE OF ERIE, WHITESIDE COUNTY, ILLINOIS PROPOSED APPROVAL OF REDEVELOPMENT PLAN AND REDEVELOPMENT PROJECTS, ESTABLISHMENT OF REDEVELOPMENT PROJECT AREA AND ADOPTION OF TAX INCREMENT ALLOCATION FINANCING THEREFOR NOTICE IS HEREBY GIVEN that the Village President and Village Board (the “Corporate Authorities”) of the Village of Erie, Whiteside County, Illinois (the “Municipality”) will hold a public hearing for the purpose of hearing all protests and objections in connection with the proposed approval of a redevelopment plan entitled “Erie TIF District Redevelopment Plan and Project” (the “Redevelopment Plan”), establishment of a redevelopment project area to be known as the “Erie TIF District Redevelopment Project Area” (the “Redevelopment Project Area”) and the proposed adoption of tax increment allocation financing therefor (“TIF”) under and pursuant to the Tax Increment Allocation Redevelopment Act (65 ILCS 5/11-74.4.1 et seq.), as supplemented and amended (the “Act”), including notice as follows: 1. 3. The Corporate Authorities of the Municipality will give all interested persons and all affected taxing districts an opportunity to be heard at the public hearing. Locals fare well in state finals

treynolds@shawmedia.com CHARLESTON – Fulton’s 4x200 relay team of Abbi Thyne, Annaka Hackett, Mikayla Gazo and Lauren Mahoney finished fifth in Class 1A in a time of 1:45.96 in Saturday’s finals at the IHSA Girls State Track and Field Meet at O’Brien Field on the campus of Eastern Illinois University.

That time missed the quartet’s record of 1:43.6, but they were able to medal on their final run together.

Thyne, Gazo and Mahoney are all seniors.

The Steamers started in Lane 9, meaning they got the furthest stagger and were out in front when the gun sounded. Thyne tried her best to keep that margin in the leadoff leg.

“I was the first runner, and my thought process was since I started farther down in Lane 9, I knew I was going to have to run farther, and I just wanted to be really quick out of the blocks,” Thyne said. “The entire time my thought process was telling myself ‘I know you can move your legs faster than this, so do it, do it, do it.’ It was a pretty good start, and I’m proud of the race we ran.”

Hackett said her only thought was to keep anyone from passing her during the second leg.

“When Abbi handed off to me, it was a really good handoff, and I just started running. I could hear someone behind me, but I could not let them beat me, so I just kept running and pushed myself to push the ground away with every step,” Hackett said. “I just could not let her beat me, that was my mindset. And then when I handed off, it was really good and I knew it was going to be a good race.”

Hackett gave the baton to Gazo, who had made a minor adjustment to her start of the third leg, and it paid dividends.

“I changed my steps to 6 to 10 – it was 7 to 13 – and I was really nervous with that,” Gazo said. “So when I saw Annaka coming in, I knew the steps were right because she got it to me per-

fectly. My thought process was just to get the good steps and we can get it.”

Mahoney got the baton and Fulton was still in the hunt, and they ended up improving on their No. 8 seed by three spots.

“Going into it, it was a lot of pressure with the school record as our goal, but we got it,” Mahoney said. “Being in the ninth lane is kind of nerve-wracking, because obviously we have the lead right away and you’re out in front. But coming around the curve, I was really confident, and it looked like I was getting there fast. The last 100 went really well for me.

“Overall, I think Mikayla really stepped up today, and Abbi started strong, and Annaka is who usually gets us the lead. I was just watching her, trying not to focus on what place we were in when I was running, but I was really confident, for sure.”

Mahoney already had a strong run under her belt, as she placed seventh in the 100 just a few races earlier. She ran it in 13.09 seconds, improving on her finals seed by two spots.

Erie-Prophetstown’s Riley Packer finished 10th in the 1A 800, just missing out on a medal by one place and 0.33 seconds. Her time of 2:22.14 was a PR, and moved her up two spots from her 12th seed after prelims. She ran a 2:25.93 in that race.

She led for most of the first lap, only to see a large group pass her right as she got back to the line to start her second lap. Still, the senior was pleased with her performance to close out her Panthers career.

“I usually try in other times I’ve run this race to get out in front because it’s easier to have people try to catch you when you’re in front than staying back and then try to get around them later.

So that’s what I tried to keep in mind,” Packer said. “I think I just realized that pace wasn’t fast enough when more people were catching up to me, but I felt really good, so I didn’t really expect it.

“I think this is probably the best state experience I’ve had in my high school career, so the whole experience has been really good.”

The Panthers scored three runs in the bottom of the sixth to pull away from the Storm in a regional semifinal.

Jaiden Oleson was 2 for 4 with a double, two RBIs and a run scored for Erie-Prophetstown. Mya Jones had two singles, an RBI and three runs.

Jaden Johnson added two singles, two runs and an RBI. Jenna Gibson also drove in a run for the Panthers. Aylah Jones struck out 15 in a complete game, allowing three earned runs, six hits and two walks.

2A Kewanee Regional final Erie-Prophetstown 6, Sherrard 4: The

Panthers scored six runs in the second inning and hung on to win the regional title in Kewanee.

Jaden Johnson doubled and drove in two runs, and Jaylynn Hamilton and Jaiden Oleson both had two hits and a run. Aylah Jones, Emma Davis, Jenna Gibson and Hannah Ryan had RBIs, and Jones went the distance in the circle, allowing four runs (two earned) and 11 hits, striking out four without a walk.

ers avenged a pair of regular-season losses to the Warriors with a regional semifinal win in Pearl City.

Madyson Luskey was 3 for 3 with a run and an RBI, and Brooklyn Brennan singled, doubled and drove in two runs for Fulton. Kylie Smither had a pair of singles, an RBI and a run, Ariana Nielsen doubled, drove in a run and scored another, and Resse Germann, Amy Hughes and Addison Hartman all added RBIs for the Steamers.

Hartman gave up three runs (one earned) and four hits in five innings, striking out 10 and walking one. Teegan Germann pitched two innings of shutout relief, allowing two hits and four walks while adding a strikeout.

Steamers fell behind 4-0 in the first inning and never recovered in a loss to the host Wolves.

The Steamers will play the winner of Saturday’s East Dubuque Regional final between Warren-Stockton and East Dubuque at the 1A Lena-Winslow Sectional at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday.

Prophetstown State Park to host 16th annual Dick Brown Youth Fishing Derby The 16th annual Dick Brown Youth Fishing Derby will be held beginning at 8 a.m. on Saturday, June 18, at the Prophetstown State Park on Park Avenue, Prophetstown. The fishing derby will be open to youth up to 14 years old.

Participants will be divided up into age groups that will have different fishing times throughout the day. Participants ages 6 and under will fish from 8 to 9 a.m., ages 7 to 10 will begin fishing at 9 a.m. and ages 11 to 14 will begin fishing at 10 a.m.

Prizes will be awarded.

Parents must sign a registration form for children to participate in the fishing derby. Registration forms are available at the Prophetstown Police Station or at the derby.
