On behalf of myself, our City Council, the employees of the City of Princeton, and all of the residents, I say with sincerity….”Welcome!”
Your visit to Princeton is appreciated. We pride ourselves on being a small Midwestern community that still holds basic values at heart. We believe there is a commitment to each other, to our families, and to our guests, that Princeton is a special place, one that takes pride in the day-to-day quality of living. We know our community members by first name. We greet each other with a smile and a wave. Princeton has been my home, my parents’ home, and my grandparents’ home. Actually, my family’s roots in Princeton go back six generations, and go forward two more!
So, what makes Princeton stand out from other small communities? There are so many things, but if I had to name just one, it is our rich history directly tied to our roots in agriculture. Looking around, north, south, east and west of the city, you will see some of the most productive, dark, rich soil in Illinois. Farm land that, for decades, has been carefully tilled, planted, cultivated, and harvested, yielding abundant crops of corn and soybeans.
Yes, our roots do grow deep. And with it, a pride that we take in keeping our community prosperous and energized, respecting our past and embracing our future. You’ll feel it as you stroll our sidewalks, bicycle our streets, and explore our parks, historic sites, and two business districts.
We are glad you’re here! Join us as we grow, join us as we continue to prosper, join us as we enjoy a quality of life seldom equaled. As I often say, it’s the ‘little things’ that set us apart.
You are our guests, enjoy your time here. Feel free to reach out to me; I’d love to know what brought you to our wonderful city, and how your visit was. As Princeton’s mayor, I am always just a phone call away!
Sincerely,
Ray MabryMayor, City of Princeton (815) 878-1981

The early settlement of Princeton began in the 1830’s when families from New England and later the Mid-Atlantic states, traveled west seeking good farm land. Princeton proved to be an ideal location because the land was an undulating, mostly treeless, grass-covered plain. In addition, the soil was very fertile and well drained.
When settling new land, it became common for new arrivals to come in groups to ensure congenial neighbors, schools, and religious affiliations. The Hampshire Colony is believed to have been the first of these organizations to settle in Northern Illinois. The settlers arrived in Princeton in 1831, the same year the city was surveyed and a rough draft was laid out. They soon built the Hampshire Colony Congregational Church and employed as one of its earliest pastors, Owen Lovejoy, the well-known abolitionist. In addition, Reverend Lovejoy used his own home to hide runaway slaves and in 1854 he was elected to the Illinois House of Representatives. Prior and during the Civil War, Princeton became an important station on the Underground Railroad.
Shortly before the Civil War broke out, the citizens were able to convince the Burlington Railroad to lay its rails within a mile of the city. Within a few years the community had expanded its main street to meet the railroad and this action indeed benefited the community and insured its future growth.
The first high school in the state of Illinois was built in Princeton between 1866 and 1868 with the first commencement taking place in 1870. Unfortunately, this building was destroyed by fire in 1924 and was replaced by the present building in late 1925.
Those early settlers to Princeton thrived on the rich prairie and many became very wealthy. Thus, they were able to contribute in many ways to the growth and development of the community. As they retired and passed their farmland to the next generation, it became a tradition for retirees to move into town and build a grand home for their retirement years. Many of these large, beautiful homes remain and are lovingly cared for by today’s residents.
The Society is an outgrowth of the Old Settlers Meeting held in Princeton’s Converse Hall on January 12, 1865. The Early Settlers Society of Bureau County was proposed as a permanent organization in September 1867, and members were encouraged to save items for use in a future museum.
A resolution was adopted at the 46th Annual Meeting in 1911 to officially begin organizing a Bureau County Historical Society. The Early Settlers Society disbanded in 1920 and
united with the Bureau County Historical Society. The society was then given space in the new Courthouse for a museum where exhibits were on display from 1938 to 1948. In 1946, the Clark-Norris home was bequeathed to the Historical Society by Grace Clark Norris, daughter of the original owners,
and the BCHS moved there in 1948.
Because of storage and space constraints, we are not able to accept every item that is offered to us. But articles of significant historical value, particularly to Bureau County, continue to be gratefully received by the Historical Society.

Our quaint little town is the kind of place where everyone knows just about everyone else and visitors are made to feel like they are long-lost members of our community. So, whether you are visiting for a day, a week, or a lifetime, all of us in Princeton welcome you!
And Princeton is much more than just friendly: we’ve got a flair for the arts; an interest-
ing and quirky history dating back to 1831; year-round festivals and exciting events; nature trails, and parks; and a Main Street that offers endless and unique shopping, food, and a whole lot of fun!
Relax and enjoy! Spend some time in a cozy downtown café with a book or a newspaper and a cup of hot coffee. Find out why Bureau County was ranked the 5th best place to live in the Midwest and the 21st best rural county to live in the whole United States.
In fact, PureWow just ranked Princeton #3 most charming small town in the entire state of Illinois, trailing only Galena and Woodstock.
What’s more picturesque than a covered bridge? Two covered bridges, which sit just a smidgen outside of Princeton’s city limits. The historical preservation around Princeton doesn’t stop there: In addition to a classic,
old-timey main street, the town is also home to the Lovejoy Homestead, a stop on the Underground Railroad.
You might end up wanting to do more than visit! Get off Interstate 80 at Exit #56, where the four Flags of Freedom wave, and feel your life slow down just a notch and although the pace may be slow, don’t worry; we have high speed wireless hotspots for you to stay connected!
Located in the heart of Bureau County, Princeton is an easy drive from Peoria, Quad Cities, Rockford, and Chicago. Conveniently located in the center, we often hear our visitors say that Princeton is an easy place for friends and family to “meet in the middle”. Amtrak makes several stops at Princeton’s faithfully restored depot throughout the day and is a designated stop on the Carl Sandberg train.
Illinois’ longest operating lumberyard continues to thrive along Peru’s historic riverfront. Maze Lumber has been providing top quality building materials to Illinois Valley contractors and homeowners for 176 years, still owned by the founding fathers (Maze). Located in a 15,000-square foot showroom and office, we offer building materials for the modern home as well as a full line of the traditional lumber items used in home building, commercial construction, and industrial applications. Our experienced sales staff takes pride in their ability to provide knowledgeable assistance along with prompt delivery at reasonable prices.
Throughout the year, Princeton festivals and events will give you dozens of reasons to visit!
Each year, our Homestead Festival, a celebration of the Owen Lovejoy Homestead’s remarkable place in history, is held during the second weekend in September. The weekend’s activities include a window display contest; museum tours; a pulled pork barbecue dinner and ice cream social; horse-drawn wagon rides; car show; helicopter rides; an arts and crafts show and market; a BBQ rib cook-off; a 5K race; class reunions; and the Homestead Festival parade.
Through the summer, Festival 56 provides a wonderful range of theatrical events from comedies and musicals to dramas, as well as Shakespeare in the Park performances on Sunday afternoons and Wednesday evenings. The Main Street Summer Concert Series is excuse enough to look forward to warm, sunny days! A variety of bands, playing on various days during the summer on Main Street… a crowd pleaser for all ages. Admission is free and our local food and beverage vendors will have you coming back for more. Wrap up your summer late August with a trip to the Bureau County Fair, one of the longest-run-
ning county fairs in the state!
Bicyclists at all skill levels look forward to the annual June Z Tour Ride. See picturesque Princeton and surrounding beautiful Bureau County from a two-wheeled prospective. This popular biking event provides four routes ranging from ten to one hundred miles.
In October, Shadows of the Blue and Gray offers a chance for families to see how Civil War soldiers lived and fought. The campgrounds are open for tours on Friday and Saturday evening, and a Civil War battle re-creation is the focus of Sunday’s events.
Throughout the year, our Chamber of Commerce, in cooperation with local merchants, hosts several special seasonal events bringing shopping, entertainment and fun together along our two unique Main Street shopping districts. Whether it be strolling the street during Summer Solstice, embracing your inner witch during Witch’s Night Out, or participating in the magical transformation of our town during the holidays, you are sure to fall in love with what Princeton has to offer year round.

Festival 56 is a professional theater festival, run by the Princeton Theater Group, located at the Grace Theater in Princeton. Each season, we offer several productions in the summer, including FREE Shakespeare in the Park, Camp 56, with additional special events and productions in the fall and winter. Performances at Festival 56 feature a cast and crew of professional theater artists assembled from across the country who live and work in Princeton during the season.
One mission of Festival 56 is to present a wide selection of the most memorable plays and musicals throughout history, from the plays of William Shakespeare to the new generation of Broadway composers. Another mission of Festival 56 is promoting theater arts education and enrichment to children and adults through Learning Stage, the education committee of the PTG. We sponsor Camp 56, a two-week summer theater camp for children.

Shopping in Princeton is an experience you haven’t had anywhere else because Princeton is a wonderful one-of-a-kind shopping town! Spend the day…bring your girlfriends... and be sure to give yourself plenty of time to explore our Main Street, home to over a mile of great shopping! Princeton treasures two shopping districts both of which developed in the 1800’s as Princeton began to grow. Many of these shops still have the beautiful weathered hardwood floors and the unique decorative ceiling that were standard when these buildings were built.
Every little store in Princeton is unique, and, in most of them, the owners themselves will be right there serving you. Ask them about the history of their stores; one of our gift boutiques still has the original drawers, racks and rolling ladders that were part of the hardware store that originally occupied the space.
Many of our shop owners can boast that their stores are filled with items that are Made in America, and more specifi-
cally, right here in Bureau County. Local artisans, from potters, to woodworkers, to jewelry artists, sell their handmade products in local stores.
If you’re looking for the perfect gift that nobody else will be giving, you’re in the right place. Each shop is filled with remarkable treasures: unusual collection of kitchen items and linens, refrigerator magnets, pet accessories, scarves, unique clothing, jewelry, home decorating items, perfumes, garden accessories, candles, great wines and liqueurs, stationery, greeting cards, teas, coffees… well, you get the idea!
Antique shops? Trendy NEW fashion? China replacement on your list? We have a variety of choices for your shopping pleasure. And every year, more new shops open, so your Princeton shopping experience never gets old.
Next time you’re thinking about shopping, give yourself a break, hop in the car with some girlfriends, and head out to Princeton, Illinois. From master artisans to one-of-a-kind gift shops, you
will find plenty of treasures to fill your suitcase. We’re waiting for you!
Bring your appetite when visiting Princeton! Many restaurants are waiting for you to stop in and enjoy. We have a surprisingly eclectic array of choices, from good oldfashioned American comfort food to the most delicious pizza you have ever experienced, a steakhouse unlike any other, to Mexican and Asian options too! Start your day with a cup of coffee from one of our many coffee spots. Drop in for a beer at one of our local pubs or the brewery. Wherever you dine take your time and relax – and don’t forget to leave room for dessert! A stop at the famous Myrtle’s Pie is a must for anyone visiting Princeton!

By adoption of an ordinance on April 18, 1885, a donation of $11,862.67 made to the City of Princeton by the last will of Nehemiah Matson for the purpose of establishing a free public library was accepted by the city council in trust. On February 27, 1886, the first Board of Directors of Matson Public Library was confirmed by the city council and the library opened its doors.
The first meeting of the new Board of Directors took place on March 10, 1886 and for the next three years, the Nehemiah Matson fund was held as an investment until a location for the library was decided upon and secured. After a lengthy process, it was decided that the first library was to be located in

In 1890, we were already expanding. The Matson Public Library located on South Main Street in Princeton was first opened for use by the public. It remained in use for 22 years. In the summer of 1912, the Chicago architectural firm of Patton & Miller was contracted to begin work on the permanent library facility in the main square of Princeton. A year later, the new facility was opened to the public.
94 years later, a city-wide referendum was passed to allow construction to begin on a new, 28,000 square foot facility at 698 East Peru Street. A ribbon-cutting ceremony was held in August 2007 when the new facility was given to the people of Princeton.

The library has programs each month on the fourth Thursday at 7:00 pm. The final two months are combined into one program on the first Thursday following Thanksgiving. Zearing Park is also the home of a 3 acre fully stocked pond, 1.7 mile walking path, and outdoor soccer complex.
Our City County Park is a 65-acre park nestled throughout a natural woodland setting just north of town offering barbecue areas, log cabin shelter, playground, ball field, and restrooms. It is often the location of Boy and Girl Scout Day Camps and our annual Shadows of the Blue and Gray Civil War Reenactment each October.
Westside Ball Park is hustling and bustling with activity during the baseball and softball seasons. Princeton Youth Softball and Princeton Youth Baseball as well as Princeton Church League, the Bureau County Metro Center Leagues and many others play at Westside Park.
This 12-acre park hosts a 9-hole disc golf course, pickleball courts, tennis courts, barbecue & picnic areas, shelter, restrooms, playground, sand volleyball court, and the outdoor Alexander Pool.

A multi-purpose room with adjacent kitchen provides the perfect setting for conventions, expos, meetings, or wedding receptions. The Park District Staff and the Bureau County Metro Center strive to provide a continuous schedule of fun and exciting events, leagues and classes keeping our residents and visitors active & entertained all year long.
Located one mile west of Princeton. Built in 2006, the bridge derives its strength from its Burr arch design, an idea patented by Theodore Burr of New York in 1804. Made entirely of wood using 1800s concepts, the Captain Swift Covered Bridge is the only two-lane covered bridge in Illinois. It has a 16’-3” vertical clearance, a 28 foot minimum roadway width and a 128’ span over the Big Bureau Creek.
Arukah is compassionate behavioral health care that focuses on the whole person through wellness, prevention, treatment and recovery approaches, and journeys with people long-term during their healing.
The Red Covered Bridge is a wooden, covered bridge that runs over Big Bureau Creek north of Princeton in Dover Township, Bureau County, Illinois. It was originally built in 1863, at a cost of $3,148.57. The 149-foot (45 m) span is one of five remaining covered bridges in Illinois, and it is still open to traffic, though now covered with CCTV cameras. The bridge was added to the U.S. National Register of Historic Places on April 23, 1975.
