Letter from the Mayor THE WELCOME MAT IS ALWAYS OUT WHEN VISITING PRINCETON! Located on Interstate 80, in the middle of north central Illinois, Princeton is easy to find; a quintessential small midwestern town that has something for everyone. Our Main Street is unique. We have an uptown business district to the north that is separated by a half mile from a downtown business district to the south, where it meets a courthouse square that is home to an historic winged monument that serves as a memorial to those from Princeton and Bureau County who served in the civil war. It all begins where Main Street meets I-80 to the north, or if you prefer to see the countryside on your way to town, US Routes 6 and 34 make their way through town and Amtrak serves Princeton with eight stops a day. Our unique uptown and downtown business districts are on the National List of Historic Places, and it is where you will find a full complement of exceptional boutiques, wonderful restaurants, coffee shops and friendly residents and tourists alike. During the summer months, on the weekends, an old fashion trolley transports shoppers, residents and tourists from downtown to uptown and back again, with multiple stopping points along the way. If it’s culture you’re looking for, you need to look no further than Princeton. We are home to Festival 56, the State’s largest summer theatre festival (they also add special theatrical events during the fall and winter). Professional actors from around the country migrate to Princeton to live and perform during their summer season. Festival 56 presents a wide selection of memorable plays and musicals. And every Sunday the festival presents a fully staged, free production of a William Shakespeare play, on the court house square… it’s Shakespeare in the Park! Speaking of the arts, Princeton has its own Walk of Fame where we recognize, with a star and plaque, those from Princeton who have made a name for themselves nationally and internationally, such as Academy Award nominated actor, Richard Widmark, Soup Opera star Kathryn Hayes, who portrayed Kim, on As the World Turns, for 38 years, Nick Young, retired CBS News correspondent who anchored CBS’ World News Roundup, and Keith Knudsen, former drummer for the Doobie Brothers during the 1970’s and early 80’s and again in the 90’s. During the summer months Princeton Tourism presents our popular Down on Main Street Concert Series. We close down a section of our downtown Main Street business district five times a year beginning in June and ending in early September. Bands from throughout the region play in front of crowds exceeding 2500. If you make it to town for the September concert, you’ll find yourself in the midst of our annual Homestead Festival, a three-day event that draws thousands to town year in and year out. If you’re a history buff, we have you covered there as well. We are home to Owen Lovejoy, a famous abolitionist during the early to mid-1800s. He served as a representative in the U.S. Congress and did so until he passed away. Shortly after Owen Lovejoy died, Lincoln said that, “Lovejoy was the best friend I had in Congress”. Lovejoy’s home, which is open for tours, is located on the east edge of town. It is listed as a National Historic Landmark; one of only 2600 National Landmarks throughout the country. In October, Princeton is home to one of the largest Civil War re-enactments anywhere. It is held at our beautiful CityCounty park, which provides a truly unique setting for such a popular event. We are also home to two covered bridges; the youngest and oldest in the state. The oldest is the Red Covered Bridge, built in 1863, and it is still in use today. The Bureau County Historical Museum and Research Library, located on the court house square, is a treasure trove of artifact collections from around Bureau County and the state. It is home to the famous H.W Immke Photography Collection, some 20,000 glass plate negatives and photographs taken between the years 1866 and 1923. Also preserved is photographic equipment owned and used by Mr. Immke. We invite you to visit and explore Princeton. History T
he early settlement of Princeton began in the 1830’s when families from New England and later the Mid-Atlantic states, traveled west seeking good farm land. Princeton proved to be an ideal location because the land was an undulating, mostly treeless, grass-covered plain. In addition, the soil was very fertile and well drained. When settling new land, it became common for new arrivals to come in groups to ensure congenial neighbors, schools, and religious affiliations. The Hampshire Colony is believed to have been the first of these organizations to settle in Northern Illinois. The settlers arrived in Princeton in 1831, the same year the city was surveyed and a rough draft was laid out. They soon built the Hampshire Colony Congregational Church and employed as one of its earliest pastors, Owen Lovejoy, the well-known abolitionist. In addition, Reverend Lovejoy used his own home to hide runaway slaves and in 1854 he was elected to the Illinois House of Representatives. Prior and during the Civil War, Princeton became an important station on the Underground Railroad.

Shortly before the Civil War broke out, the citizens were able to convince the Burlington Railroad to lay its rails within a mile of the city. Within a few years the community had expanded its main street to meet the railroad and this action indeed benefited the community and insured its future growth. The first high school in the state of Illinois was built in Princeton between 1866 and 1868 with the first commencement taking place in 1870. Unfortunately, this building was destroyed by fire in 1924 and was replaced by the present building in late 1925.
HISTORY OF BUREAU COUNTY HISTORICAL SOCIETY The Society is an outgrowth of the Old Settlers Meeting held in Princeton’s Converse Hall on January 12, 1865. The Early Settlers Society of Bureau County was proposed as a permanent organization in September 1867, and members were encouraged to save items for use in a future museum. A resolution was adopted at the 46th Annual Meeting in 1911 to officially begin organizing a Bureau County Historical Society. The Early Settlers Society disbanded in 1920 and
Those early settlers to Princeton thrived on the rich prairie and many became very wealthy. Thus, they were able to contribute in many ways to the growth and development of the community. As they retired and passed their farmland to the next generation, it became a tradition for retirees to move into town and build a grand home for their retirement years. Many of these large, beautiful homes remain and are lovingly cared for by today’s residents.

LLibraries ibraries first library was to be located in the building at what is now 529 South Main Street in Princeton, IL. In 1890, we were already expanding. The Matson Public Library located on South Main Street in Princeton was first opened for use by the public. It remained in use for 22 years. In the summer of 1912, the Chicago architectural firm of Patton & Miller was contracted to begin work on the permanent library facility in the main square of Princeton. A year later, the new facility was opened to the public.

By adoption of an ordinance on April 18, 1885, a donation of $11,862.67 made to the City of Princeton by the last will of Nehemiah Matson for the purpose of establishing a free public library was accepted by the city council in trust. On February 27, 1886, the first Board of Directors of Matson Public Library was confirmed by the city council and the library opened its doors. The first meeting of the new Board of Directors took place on March 10, 1886 and for the next three years, the Nehemiah Matson fund was held as an investment until a location for the library was decided upon and secured. After a lengthy process, it was decided that the
94 years later, a city-wide referendum was passed to allow construction to begin on a new, 28,000 square foot facility at 698 East Peru Street. A ribbon-cutting ceremony was held in August 2007 when the new facility was given to the people of Princeton.

Our community is blessed with the wonderful Princeton Park District, which, year in and year out, tirelessly maintains over 192 acres of parks, the Bureau County Metro Center, and the public outdoor Alexander Swimming Pool. The Bureau County Metro Center is a 50,000 square-foot recreation center featuring a full-size gymnasium; 25-yard indoor swimming pool with wading pool and observation balcony; racquetball courts; weight room; cardiovascular room, elevated running/walking track above the gym; and locker rooms. A 40’ x 80’ multi-purpose room with adjacent kitchen provides the perfect setting for conventions, expositions, meetings, or

wedding receptions. The Park District Staff at the Metro Center strive to provide a continuous schedule of fun and exciting events, leagues and classes keeping our residents and visitors active & entertained all year long. Our green areas include the twelve-acre Alexander Park which hosts a 9-hole disc golf course, six tennis courts, outdoor Alexander pool, horseshoe pits, barbecue & picnic areas, shelter, restrooms, playground and sand volleyball. West Side Ball Park provides 2 baseball diamonds, restrooms, and concession stand and is host to a ball game nearly every evening between May and August.
Our City County Park is a 65-acre park nestled throughout a natural woodland setting just north of town offering hiking trails, barbecue areas, log cabin shelter, playground, ball field, and restrooms. It is often the location of Boy and Girl Scout Day Camps and our annual Shadows of the Blue and Gray Civil War Reenactment each October. Golf Courses CAPTAIN SWIFT BRIDGE 1600 North Epperson Rd.
Located one mile west of Princeton. Built in 2006, the bridge derives its strength from its Burr arch design, an idea patented by Theodore Burr of New York in 1804. Made entirely of wood using 1800s concepts, the Captain Swift Covered Bridge is the only two-lane covered bridge in Illinois. It has a 16’-3” vertical clearance, a 28 foot minimum roadway width and a 128’ span over the Big Bureau Creek.

Chapel Hill Golf Course and Event Center is a public 18 hole golf course and event venue located southeast of Princeton, in north-central Illinois. Tracing its roots to the original Bureau Valley Country Club (BVCC), this once private course is steeped in tradition and history dating back to 1909, where it began as a simple stop along the Inter-Urban rail line between Princeton and Bureau Junction.

Driving range, Pro-shop, cart rental, full bar and snack bar are available. Designed by Carl Gustason, the Wyaton Hills golf course opened in 1968. Max Halberg manages the course as the Owner/Manager.
RED COVERED BRIDGE
2 mi. North of Princeton, IL off IL 26 on Old Dad Joe Trail The Red Covered Bridge is a wooden, covered bridge that runs over Big Bureau Creek north of Princeton in Dover Township, Bureau County, Illinois. It was originally built in 1863, at a cost of $3,148.57. The 149-foot (45 m) span is one of five remaining covered bridges in Illinois, and it is still open to traffic, though now covered with CCTV cameras. The bridge was added to the U.S. National Register of Historic Places on April 23, 1975.

ACCESSIBLE & RELATIONAL BEHAVIORAL HEALTHCARE FOR RURAL COMMUNITIES CLINICAL COUNSELING SERVICES
Clinical counseling is a patient-centered service available for both youth and adults, but also offered in family and group formats. We use integrated, contemporary approaches to help to bring about positive changes in one’s life. Modalities include EMDR, trauma-informed, Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, grief counseling, marriage therapy, structural family therapy, and individual counseling. Both in-person and tele-counseling services on Smart devices available.
MIND-BODY-YOGA THERAPIES
The purpose of the Mind-Body Therapy Program at Arukah is to improve the social-emotional-physical health of individuals. We provide a safe space where people can take a break from busyness and find renewal. We offer a variety of class types to meet diverse needs of the Illinois Valley. Classes typically include the components of meditation, breathwork and physical poses. Meditation focuses on concepts such as grace, love, creativity, and self-esteem and has been shown to reduce stress and improve concentration. Breathwork includes conscious breathing methods that reduce anxiety, lower blood pressure and increase energy. Physical poses enhance strength, flexibility, balance, cardiovascular fitness and tissue oxygenation, while reducing joint and back pain.

A Drug Free Communities Coalition is recognized as a community-based formal arrangement for cooperation and collaboration among community groups or sectors to promote substance use prevention among youth.
