How we’re serving communities in time of crisis To our valued readers: The spread of COVID-19 (coronavirus) has quickly developed into one of the most significant events in our nation’s history. People from all walks of life are struggling to adapt to the situation.

You have likely been inundated with updates from various CEOs and organizational leaders.

With apologies for the lack of originality, I would like to share what Shaw Media is doing to help cope with the crisis.

A few weeks ago, when it was becoming apparent that we were dealing with a burgeoning crisis, Shaw’s leadership team began working on a contingency plan.

The plan was developed with four goals in mind: 1) Protect the well-being of our employees 2) Do our part to limit the spread of the virus 3) Ensure the continuity of our business 4) Provide reliable information about the virus to our readers We shared CDC guidelines with our employees and informed them that they would be paid for time off caused by the virus, even if they had run out of paid sick leave. We put together a workfrom-home strategy, and required all employees who could work from home to do just that.

We have temporarily closed our offices to the public, with a reduced number of staff continuing to work in some of our locations. As you may have heard or read, newspapers have been designated as essential businesses by most local governments, meaning employees will be allowed

to travel to and from work even in a shelter-inplace situation.

In addition to heroes in health care, law enforcement and other services, our journalists and newspaper delivery crews also are unsung heroes during these times. They are working diligently to make sure the news is delivered to you in print and digital formats.

For the continuity of our business, we have implemented strategies to ensure we can maintain our ability to report on significant events, even though much of the reporting and processing of the news has to be done from remote locations.

Unfortunately, our company, like so many other small to mid-sized local businesses, is bracing for an economic impact. A significant portion of our revenue stems from advertising, and businesses generally don’t advertise when they

are closed. This temporary reduction in revenue will place great stress on our company. We will do everything possible to keep our service to you uninterrupted.

Our news teams are doing yeoman’s work providing accurate and valuable information. In times like these, Shaw Media is most valuable to the communities we serve. Unfortunately, crisis situations can breed misinformation – and misinformation can create confusion and anxiety.

Gov. Pritzker issues stay-at-home order Essential businesses stay open SHAW MEDIA ILLINOIS CHICAGO – Gov. J.B. Pritzker issued a stayat-home order for all Illinois residents beginning 5 p.m. Saturday, in order to slow the spread of COVID-19, he said in a joint news conference with Chicago Mayor Lori Lightfoot on Friday afternoon.

“The only strategy available to us to limit the increase in cases and ensure our healthcare system has capacity to treat those who become ill is to mitigate the spread of coronavirus in the most robust manner possible,” Pritzker said.

Pritzker said he wants to assure the public that essential businesses will remain open to the public.

Illinois residents will still be able to leave their homes to do things like going to the grocery store, visiting pharmacies, putting gas in their cars, going for walks and visiting medical offices, Pritzker said.

Pritzker said that, for residents who have already been engaging in self-quarantining measures, “your lives will not change very much.”

“I’ve asked every one of these experts, What action can I take to save the most lives?’” he said.

“Well, they’ve come back to me with one inescapable conclusion: To avoid the loss of potentially tens of thousands of lives, we must enact an immediate stay-at-home order for the state of Illinois.”

The stay-at-home order will remain in place until the end of the day on April 7, but Pritzker said his administration will continue to monitor the spread of the coronavirus to determine whether this period should be extended.

This means that all nonessential businesses must stop operating and anyone who is able to work from home must do so, Pritzker said.

“I have spoken with many of my colleagues across the city and the state and we all acknowledge that this is the only way forward,” lead epidemiologist for the University of Chicago Medicine, Emily Landon, said.

“We can’t take care of everyone at once and we can’t keep that low mortality promise if we can’t provide the support that our patients need,” Landon said. “...all we have to slow the spread is distance, social distance.”

“The governor, local leaders and I are in full agreement that we need to act swiftly and that this decision is necessary,” Lightfoot said.

Cook County, Director of the Illinois Department of Public Health Ngozi Ezike said.

Illinois has significantly ramped up it’s testing ability and is now doing around 1,000 tests per day, Ezike said. Confirmed cases are expected to rise with the increase in testing.

This is a number the state will work to increase through the use of mobile, “drive-thru” testing sites, she added.

“We want to strengthen the testing capacity in Illinois by helping hospitals and laboratories to develop their own testing abilities,” Ezike said.

“And we expect to have these tests available within the healthcare system in the next few weeks.”

Pritzker has ordered all municipalities to halt evictions during the crisis and will dedicate additional resources to organizations that address homelessness, he said.

“For our essential workers, we’re going to make sure you have safe daycare to take care of your children,” he added.

Law enforcement will monitor for violations of the stay-at-home order and will take actions when necessary, Pritzker said.

There may also be consequences at the local level for nonessential businesses that refuse to comply with the order, he said.

“We here in Illinois have overcome obstacles before and we’ll do so again,” he said. “And we will rise to this occasion.”

Illinois is now the second state to issue a shelter-in-place order after California put in a shelterin-place order last week.

Prtizkers said the stay-at-home order wasn’t an easy decision.

“I fully recognize, in some cases, I am choosing between saving people’s lives and saving people’s livelihoods. But ultimately you can’t have a livelihood if you don’t have your life,” he said. “Of all the obligations that weigh on me as governor, this is the greatest. If there are actions that I can take to save lives in the midst of this pandemic, no matter how difficult, then I have an obligation to take these actions.”

COPING WITH COVID-19

Resthave residents enjoy seeing family from a distance PRAIRIE ADVOCATE STAFF MORRISON— Several area residents have figured out a way to still visit with their loved ones at the Resthave Care and Rehabilitation center in Morrison despite visitor restrictions due to the coronoavirus.

Mark and Jean Zinnen have been coming to visit Jean’s mother, Leona Schmidt, almost daily since the no essential visitors regulations have been put in place due to the corona virus.

They are now conducting their visits through a window.

“This is how we visit now,” said Jean. “Surprisingly, we can actually hear pretty well!”

Leona had a huge smile on her face during a recent visit.

“It does the heart good to see people being so kind and resilient during such difficult times,” said Karla Burn, Resthave marketing director.

Mark and Jean are not the only ones visiting their loved ones at Resthave through the windows.

“We have had several families visiting,” Burn said. “Not only does it bring smiles to the residents to see families and friends doing this, but it also brings smiles to our staff as well.

“We are extremely blessed with the families, residents, staff and community we serve and who give us amazing support,” Burn said.

Request for more protective medical equipment, federal stimulus met with claim of ‘Fake News’

BY JERRY NOWICKI Capitol News Illinois SPRINGFIELD – Gov. JB Pritzker was critical of the federal government’s COVID-19 response in a cable news appearance on Sunday, prompting an angry Twitter reply from President Donald Trump as the number of confirmed cases in Illinois surpassed 1,000 and known virus-related deaths grew to nine.

On CNN’s “State of the Union” Sunday morning, the governor claimed that a lack of coordinated action from Washington has forced states into some of the drastic steps they have taken.

“There is no doubt that the economy is being significantly harmed by the delays that the federal government had during January and February getting going dealing with this,” Pritzker told host Jake Tapper.

“That’s why we’ve had to go on stayat-home orders or keeping kids at home or closing bars and restaurants and so on.”

Pritzker did not announce any new executive action Sunday at a daily COVID-19 briefing in Chicago, but he did call for more blood donations and encouraged volunteerism in response to the pandemic by visiting serve.illinois.gov to be connected with volunteer work. State officials also announced 296 new confirmed COVID-19 cases, bringing the total to 1,049, and three new confirmed deaths related to the virus.

But in his 14th straight daily briefing on the virus’ spread, tensions with the federal government couldn’t be ignored.

He addressed the morning’s TV appearance and ensuing Twitter spat at the end of his COVID-19 remarks, saying “I refuse to spend more time on this than it deserves” before rhetorically telling Trump to “get to work, or get out of the way.”

“One of the things that’s been most heartening here in Illinois is the degree to which Republicans from all over our state have reached out to me to ask how they can help,” Pritzker said. “Even people who have had profound political disagreements with me in the past have been among the first to call or text me asking what they could do to help Illinois in our hour of need.”

While Pritzker said “Illinoisans of all political stripes are doing their part” in addressing the virus, he added “I’m finding it hard to con-

tain my anger with Donald Trump’s response to this national crisis.”

“I have doctors and nurses and first responders begging for masks, equipment, and more tests, and I have a floor full of staff who are working day and night to hunt down the supplies that our health care workers, and our first responders need, and the supplies we know they are going to need,” Pritzker said.

“We’re doing that because Donald Trump promised to deliver for all the states weeks ago, and so far has done very little.”

He added, “So apparently the only way to get the president of the United States to pay attention is to go on national television and make noise about it, which I won’t stop doing until we get what we need.”

Pritzker told Tapper that dealing with the federal government has been easier since the Federal Emergency Management Agency took a more prominent role in the fight against COVID-19, but he said the feds fulfilled only “about a quarter” of the state’s original request for personal protective equipment, or PPE, such as masks and gloves. While another shipment is coming, he said, it still represents a fraction of the state’s need.

In turn, he said, states have to try to buy these products on the market, even from other countries, and all states are competing against each other and overpaying for PPE in an effort to keep up with demand.

“This should have been a coordinated effort by the federal government,” Pritzker said. “And the national defense authorization that the president has to essentially push this manufacturing really hasn’t gone into effect in any way, and so yes, we’re competing against each other, we’re competing against other countries. It’s a wild west, I would say, out there.”

The federal government passed an $8.3 billion supplemental coronavirus response funding bill and another measure expanding paid sick leave for workers.

But Trump, in a Tweet, took aim at Pritzker, other critical governors and the media. “(JB Pritzker), Governor of Illinois, and a very small group of

certain other Governors, together with Fake News @CNN & Concast (MSDNC), shouldn’t be blaming the Federal Government for their own shortcomings. We are there to back you up should you fail, and always will be!” the president posted to Twitter.

That prompted a Twitter response from Pritzker and his comments at the daily briefing later in the afternoon.

“You wasted precious months when you could’ve taken action to protect Americans & Illinoisans. You should be leading a national response instead of throwing tantrums from the back seat. Where were the tests when we needed them? Where’s the PPE? Get off Twitter & do your job,” the governor wrote.

Tapper also asked Pritzker if the response of states which are shutting things down would prove more damaging economically than the virus is damaging medically.

“I know this is very harmful to small businesses, to all businesses, really, what we’ve had to do across the country, but this is the right thing to do. We’ve got to save lives, now is the moment,” he said.

OBITUARIES DONNA L. SCHNEIDER CHADWICK – Donna L. Schneider, 85 of Mount Carroll, passed away Sunday, March 15, 2020 at Allure Nursing Center, Mount Carroll.

Donna was a loving and caring Wife, Mother, Grandmother, and Great-Grandmother, known to be a selfless person who would always look for ways to help others.

Her friends knew her as loyal and thoughtful.

Donna was born July 3, 1934 in Savanna, the daughter of Charles “Buck” and Mildred (Saltow) Buckwalter. She graduated from the Savanna High School, and soon met Kenneth Schneider, while hanging out at Clifton’s Ice Cream Shop.

Donna and Kenny were married on August 30, 1953 in Savanna. They raised three children and celebrated 66 years of marriage.

Family was everything to Donna.

She never missed an event her children or grandchildren participated in. She enjoyed talking with the kids and being a part of their life.

Donna came by her nickname “chicken lady” honestly, as she had a passion for collecting chickens, as long as they were not the real ones! Donna loved going to garage sales, working with ceramics, and visiting the casino with Kenny.

She will be dearly missed by her husband, Kenny of Mount Carroll, her daughter, Cindy (Bart) Ottens of Chadwick, her twin sons, Kenneth III and Kurt, both of Bradenton, Florida; two granddaughters, Kelly (Kurt) Francis of Milledgeville and Kari (Jason) Fisher of Chicago; and a sister, Betty (Rich) Madsen of Homosassa, Florida.

She is also survived by four special great-grandchildren, Kyson and Kamden

Francis, and Olivia and Grant Fisher.

A private family service will be held with burial in Oak Hill Cemetery, Mount Carroll.

NORMA J. MCCOLLEY LANARK – Norma Jean McColley was one person that a friend, or family could always count on to be there.

On March 14, 2020, at the age of 55, Norma passed away at the Lena Living Center after a courageous battle with breast cancer. Her loving family was there, by her side.

She will be missed.

Norma was born February 25, 1965 in Morrison, the daughter of Frank and Grace (Gums) Zahn, Sr. She attended grade school in Mount Carroll, then after the family moved, she graduated from the Lanark High School with the Class of 1984.

She married Richard McColley, Jr. Throughout life, Norma had a lot of adversity with health and marriage. Through it all she continued to love, even helping others who needed basic necessities.

Norma enjoyed being a Mom, and Grandma. She wasn’t only a Mom, but became a great friend to her son, Brandon and her daughter, Haley.

She often treated his friends just like she was their mom too. Most of all, she loved being a Grandma to Carter. Her grandson Carter was always at the top of her list.

Norma had a great work ethic. She followed in her parents’ footsteps as hard-working and compassionate. Right

out of high school she went to work at Quebecor Printing in Mt. Morris. She then worked at Elkay until its closure, then worked for Medallion.

She enjoyed working at Willowglen Academy in Freeport with the disabled for a few years, and finally worked with her son, Brandon, at Groeling Salvage of Freeport.

Norma will be dearly missed by her son, Brandon McColley of Pearl City; her daughter, Haley McColley of Dixon; three brothers, Frank Zahn, Jr of Lanark, David (Diane) Gums of Atwater, Minnesota and Samuel (Tao) Gums of Chadwick; three sisters, Brenda (Ron) Messenger of Lanark, Christine Zahn of Lanark and Ida (Steve) Merkel of Chadwick.

Norma is preceded in death by both of her parents.

WASHINGTON DC -- The tax deadlines for individuals have been moved from April 15 to July 15, per U.S. Treasury Secretary, Steven Mnuchin.

Individuals who owe the IRS money will be able to defer up to $1 million in payments for 90 days without interest or penalties.

Corporations who owe the IRS money will be able to defer up to

$10 million.

The delay also includes first quarter, 2020 estimated tax payments for individuals.

These payments are now due on or before July 15.

This estimated payment delay does not apply to corporations.

Public meeting is set for Tuesday, April 21

BY JEFF HELFRICH jhelfrich@oglecountynews.com OREGON - A public hearing will be held April 21 to seek input from the community to allow a cannabis craft grow and infusion business in Oregon.

The Tree Pharm would be located at 807 Pines Road in Oregon where the former Basler’s Ace Hardware was once located.

That location is currently in the commercial highway business district. The prospect of it was discussed at an Oregon Planning Commission Meeting on Feb. 18.

Tree Pharm was represented at the meeting by local residents Ed Messenger, David Murray, Cole Johnson, and Tyler Hagemann.

“I think the meeting was positive for us,” Ed Messenger said. “I think they’re open to having the cannabis business in the area. That’s the area they pushed it go to when we first started having conversations.”

A craft grow is a business licensed by the Department of Agriculture to cultivate, dry, cure, and package marijuana, to make it available to sell at a dispensary or use at a processing organization.

A cannabis infusion is the end result of the process of infusing another substance, usually an oil, with the flavor and aroma of cannabis. This process is growing in popularity throughout the cannabis edibles industry.

The city council would have to grant a special use permit to The Tree Pharm before it could conduct business. An ordinance allowing cannabis businesses within the city limits was approved by the council on Nov. 26 by a 3-2 vote.

Initially, Tree Pharm would bring 6-8 full-time jobs to the area. There could be as many as 20-25 full-time employees after a planned expansion.

The only sales that are planned for the potential business at this time are of the wholesale variety, which does not produce sales tax. Tree Pharm will submit its application to the state in March and will not know until July 1 whether or not it will have successfully received its license from the state.

The city has already signed off on the application that Tree Pharm is in the approval process with them.

“The plan is to be operational within 90 days,” Messenger said.

“We have a September time frame in mind.”

The product will be grown and housed indoors. It was noted at the meeting that the building has 5,000 square feet of canopy space. Messenger and his partners also said that they’d like to expand the building to 14,000 square feet.

There is no transportation license involved in the proposal. Vehicles will be loaded indoors.

Tree Pharm’s philosophy as a business focuses on wellness and education as well as assisting with projects for opioid abuse.

said. “We want to implement programs in the county here.”

Messenger and his partners feel good about the public hearing and obtaining the special use permit.

“They’ve already passed an ordinance,” Messenger said. “There could be moral issues, but we fall within the ordinance. It’s the right area. There aren’t other areas like that in Oregon. It’s not by any schools or parks.”

Messenger looked at other areas to bring a craft grow and infusion business before landing on the Pines

Road location. Locations in unincorporated Ogle County, Mt. Morris and Dixon were considered before being decided against due to local ordinances not allowing it, delays or issues with available locations.

Messenger is a lifelong area resident and is happy with the outcome.

“This is where we wanted to be and it was disappointing when we thought it wasn’t going to happen,” Messenger said. “The whole group is from here and we want to bring jobs here. It couldn’t have worked out any better.”

Group looks to open craft grow cannabis business

It’s hard to grasp what’s going on nowadays I

t is a crazy world we are living in right now.

I can’t even begin to grasp what is currently going on. I also can’t grasp how much worse it is going to get before we have any reprieve from what is going on.

As of right now our office is still opened, but it may get to the point where we do not allow walk in traffic not because we don’t want to but because we are not given a choice.

BLOOMINGTON - The Illinois Farm Bureau is equipping each of its county Farm Bureaus with technology to aid the public in completing the 2020 census.

Each county office has an iPad to be used in coordination with IFB’s efforts to help members and nonmembers in getting access to the Internet to complete the Census survey.

Reapportioning occurs after each U.S. Census, starting with the number of seats given to each state in the U.S. House of Representatives. From there, boundaries will be redrawn for those seats as well as for the General Assembly and county boards.

Federal funding heavily relies on Census results. U.S. Census data determines

how $675 billion dollars is distributed, impacting education, fire and emergency response services, transportation, employment, housing, health care and public policy.

April 1 is Census Day. In mid-March, the U.S. Census Bureau will send out invitations to respond to everyone in the U.S. Census’ can be filled out online or by calling the listed contact number to fill it out via phone or to request a hard copy by mail.

After Census Day, U.S. Census Bureau representatives will make home visits to help fill out surveys. Completing a survey is required for every U.S. citizen.

meetings for the next few weeks, which we didn’t have any set anyhow as spring is coming!

Farmers will be in the fields as they do what they do best and continue to feed our world the safe affordable food supply we do have.

Did anyone else enjoy those birds chirping last week? It was so nice to hear them when I walked outside.

Our Cubs game is on hold until the MLB announces what is going on there. We will keep everyone informed as we progress.

I am quite disappointed as I did invest in quite the trendsetting Cubs skort for the season. Let’s hope they are playing games this summer so I can showcase it then.

We are diligently working on many of the summer events we do which keeps us more than busy.

Some of the things we are working on include the library programs for June and July, our membership appreciation event, fair programs, and this year’s Night on the Farm.

So stay tuned as over the course of the next few weeks we will be releasing info on all of these!

The 2019 contest participation included 7,454 entries from 46 states.

Of the state winners, 27 growers – three from each of nine classes – were named national winners, representing 12 states.

The average yield among national winners was more than 383 bush-

els per acre – greater than the projected 2019 U.S. average of 168.0 bushels per acre. While there is no overall contest winner, yields from first, second and third place farmers overall production categories topped out at 616.1953 bushels per acre.

“The challenges U.S. corn farmers faced in 2019 were, in many ways, a perfect storm. From a slew of weather-related issues to trade disruptions and persistent low prices, farmers were tested in many ways, often many times, over the past year. With determination and whole lot of grit, the American farm families who grow corn persevered. Their harvest again produced an abundance of corn to meet the world’s growing demand for food, feed, and fiber,” said NCGA President Kevin Ross, a corn grower from Minden, Iowa.

Agronomic data gleaned from the contest reveal the following: • Average planting population for the national winners was 39,009 seeds per acre, compared to 33,785 for all entrants.

• National winners applied an average of 323.6666 pounds of nitrogen, 102.4814 pounds of phosphorus and 210.9259 pounds of potassium per acre.

• Average commercial nitrogen use per bushel of yield was 0.89 pounds for the national winners and

0.87 pounds for all entrants.

• 33 percent of the national winners applied trace minerals, compared to 8.8 percent of all entrants.

• 40 percent of national winners applied manure, compared to 7 percent of all entrants.

The National Corn Yield Contest began in 1965 with 20 entries from 3 states. At that time, the highest overall yield was 218.9 bushels per acre, while the national yield average was in the mid-60 bushel-per acre range.

The winners were recognized February 28th at the 2020 Commodity Classic, the premier convention and trade show of the U.S. corn, soybean, sorghum, wheat and equipment industries, held this year in San Antonio, Texas.

GALENA – Northwest Illinois Economic Development selected Rock Island Economic Growth Corporation d/b/a Economic Growth Corporation (GROWTH) as nonprofit of the year for its redevelopment work on Shimer Square (formerly Shimer College), in Mount Carroll.

The award recognizes GROWTH and its impact the Shimer Square redevelopment will have for the area communities with its added housing, business space, and placemaking.

GROWTH was honored on March 12 during the annual meeting for Northwest Illinois Economic Development at Eagle Ridge Resort in Galena.

GROWTH took title for the former Shimer College campus on Dec. 31, 2018. The campus contains 17 buildings on 14 acres and is centrally located within the rural community of Mount Carroll.

Since taking title, GROWTH has been working diligently on the comprehensive redevelopment of the former college campus into a mixture of housing, business, and community amenities.

Its first effort was bringing back a beloved community festival, Mayfest, back to the campus during Memorial Day. It followed up with the renaming the campus by asking the community to cast a vote on their favorite name, which resulted in a tie.

A coin toss by the Mayor determined the final name of Shimer Square, in which a website www.

ShimerSquare.com was developed as a way to keep the community informed of GROWTH’s redevelopment efforts.

Professional curators came to the site in July 2019 to help provide direction and to assist with taking inventory of all the historical items that have remained, and will remain, on the campus.

Shimer Square’s overall redevelopment effort will consist of artist/ live/work space, senior and family housing, as well as community quality of life amenities.

GROWTH is finalizing the pieces of financing to kick off its first phase of Shimer Square’s redevelopment efforts that will result in the creation of 37 rental housing units within two buildings on the campus.

The project costs for the first phase exceeds $9.2 million. The effort is expected to take up to 7 years with a total investment exceeding $60 million. “As a community based development organization, we look to fill the needs of a community. We are

And several wagging tails did their best last week to try and raise the spirits of Resthave Care & Rehabilitation residents in Morrison who can’t see “non-essential” visitors in an attempt to stop the spread of the coronavirus.

“We received an awesome pet therapy visit for our residents, from three wonderful women in our community,” said Karla Burn, Resthave marketing director in an email.

and Bruno; Charla Olson and her dog Snickers; and Theresa Farrell and her dog Callie were so thoughtful and kind to think of coming to our home to raise our resident’s spirits during this difficult time.

Burn said trio decided they were going to walk their dogs at Resthave.

“They knocked on residents windows to say “hi” holding signs so the residents could read their names and the name of the pets. They added so much cheer to our resident’s day

Senior seasons for RU softball players cut short

BY ERIC INGLES eingles@saukvalley.com The 2020 season got off to a pretty good start for the Rockford University softball team.

The Regents were 6-2 and riding a four-game winning streak. After a pair of losses at a tournament in Naples, Fla. on March 9, the Regents won their next four games by a combined score of 49-9.

It looked like everything was falling into place for Rockford to be better than its 16-win season from 2019, which opened with a four-game losing streak and closed with a seven-game losing skid.

And then the plug was pulled. As COVID-19 started its spread around the globe, the Regents, like so many other spring sports teams, called off the rest of the season.

“It’s still really frustrating to practice for 9 months and then only get to play eight games,” said Rockford senior outfielder Emily Cox, an Erie native. “We did the math, and we had 35 5 a.m. practices to play eight games. It doesn’t really seem fair.”

What proved to be the Regents’ final game of the year was part of the trip to Naples, a 10-2 win over Curry on March 12, the day after the NBA shut down its season and other sports began to shut down as well.

“Our coach, before we went out and competed on our last day, said ‘Go out and play your hardest because this could very well be our last

game,’” Cox said. “He knew how serious everything was getting. He knew that our school was having meetings about not holding classes. For the most part, if you’re not going to hold classes, you’re probably not going to compete in athletics.”

Michaela Spanbauer, a senior from Oregon and a catcher and infielder for the Regents, wondered if this might happen. Keeping up with the news, she saw how the virus was spreading and thought that this might affect the sports schedule.

“It was kind of a thought in my mind that it was going to end,” she said. “Through the last two games, we kind of had to focus on now instead of the future and the rest of our season.”

Oregon native Michaela Spanbauer saw her senior softball season at Rockford University cut short by the COVID-19 outbreak. While she will be granted another year of eligibility, she was disappointed that a hot start for the Regents was wiped out.

After the final game, students were told spring break was going to be extended. A few days later, things were shut down entirely.

“They always say to play every game as if it’s your last,” Spanbauer said. “At the time, we didn’t know eligibility would be granted back. I think our whole team wanted to play like it was our last game, because that’s what we initially thought it was going to be.”

Rockford University shut down its campus amid the outbreak, and is transitioning to online classes starting today. For the players, that means working from home, with no practices or workouts for the time being.

With spring sports shut down for the year, seniors at first feared that this would be the end, their careers stopped not by a loss on the field, but by events off of it. But an NCAA panel recommended that athletes in spring sports should get another year of eligibility after seeing their 2020 seasons cut drastically short.

“I think everyone on my team has decided that they want to come back,” Cox said. “We had seven seniors, and two of us were graduating in May. We’ll still graduate in May. So we’ll have to start our masters program if we want to compete next year, but I think it’s kind of a no-brainer for us, because we’re not ready for it to be over.”

still has credits to finish up before graduating, so she was going to be on campus regardless.

“It’s even better that I can play softball my senior season with academics and as a softball player,” she said.

For the Regents, that means they will have to try to pick up in 2021 where they left off in 2020, trying to recapture the magic of a team that had scored 74 runs in eight games.

“I don’t think there was a person on our team that wasn’t hitting well,” Cox said. “That’s really hard to see something come to an end like that.”

And few people were hitting better than Cox, who came out of the gate with a .455 batting average, .538 slugging percentage, three home runs and eight RBIs in 22 at-bats.

Spanbauer had a .300 average with 10 RBIs in 20 at-bats.

“I have full confidence that we will be better next year, because we will continue to grow as a team with the same team we had,” Spanbauer said.

Though the group expects to return intact next spring, they still have to get through this one, a spring with no softball and being away from their teammates.

“Our group chats have been full of ‘I miss you guys’ and ‘I don’t know what to do without you guys,’” Cox said.
